Parking -1 Service -1 Food - Meh Beer - Not bad All in all this place seems like a cool spot to come and hang out with your friends and grab a beer. Cool atmosphere and you can get a drink quickly by going to the bar. Once the server started waiting on us things were OK but that took nearly 20 min. A little bummed because I had high hopes for this place!

Love this place! We've been here a few times- their outdoor seating is the perfect setting for a cold German beer! Not to mention their food is pretty good

I love German food and seek out authentic German restaurants so please don't lecture me about being a pretentious American with American tastes that don't understand ethnic German cuisine. This is a great place to hang out with friends but if you want quality authentic German food you need to look elsewhere. The beer is served chilled but not cold, warmer than American style but colder than expected for 'authentic' German beer, it is in the middle as far as temperature goes and should be one or the other. Service was slow and that is being gracious, the male bartender has a great warm welcome which was followed by the cold shoulder and ignoring us. My suggestion...ok for a beer if you are willing to wait and put up with a bartender with attitude. good for watching soccer but if you want German food go elsewhere.

I was a bit apprehensive about our visit here based on the somewhat negative reviews. Both my parents are German and I lived there for 3 years so I'm familiar with authentic German cuisine. I was not disappointed with Hans and Franz. You must keep in mind this is a German Biergarten - a casual place to gather with friends to relax and enjoy hearty food with cold beer. We stopped in with a group of about 15 for a business function. I will say that getting into the parking lot was a bit confusing as you must pass the restaurant and the parking lot exit to get to the entrance. The area is not well lighted so spotting the entrance is tough if it's dark and you are not familiar with the area. Judging by the number of cars entering the lot through the exit, I will say I was not the only one confused. We entered the restaurant through a lovely covered patio. This would be a great place to celebrate an Oktoberfest or just enjoy a meal and a beer on a warm night or afternoon. The restaurant itself reminded me of the German gasthauses I frequented when I lived there. Traditional German decorations, brick walls, and lots of closely spaced wooden tables promoting gumutlichkeit amongst the guests. Very comfortable atmosphere. Nicely decorated for Christmas as well. We started with the pretzels - soft, salty, hot, buttery pretzels served with German mustard. They tasted great, especially paired with my Belgian beer. For an entrée, I chose the pork shank, which our server explained was one of their specialties. For sides, I chose bratkartoffeln and cucumber salad. The pork shank was huge - delicious, tender, moist pork served on the bone with a hearty gravy. The bratkartoffeln were crispy and well seasoned and the cucumber salad tasted just like mom's. I was very pleased with my meal and others in our party were equally pleased. Sauerbraten was another big hit that night. The beer list, while not huge, had a nice selection of international offerings. All in all, I enjoyed my visit here very much. I would stop in again and I just may have the chance since my business seems to send me to Greenville fairly frequently.

Iama Critic Rating - Hans & Franz Biergarten - 4 Stars 3124 South Highway 14, Greenville, SC Overall: As some have mentioned Hans and Franz offers unusually interesting ambiance. And the parking is pretty sad, especially when they tried to charge me $5 during their Oktoberfest event. But such features and issues are meaningless to us and do not affect our ratings. We critique food and service, not buildings and parking lots. When you look at the ratings for Hans & Franz Biergarten you wonder if the restaurant is really that inconsistent or if half the reviews are just wrong? Thankfully Chef Iama Critic and his Five Star Restaurant Review crew judge food differently. We are comparative critics, judging value, portion and quality as it measures up to a restaurant's competition. It is irrelevant to us if we even like what we are served. And to be honest I actually hate kraut, I hate ruebens, and I do not drink, so you would think I would rip this place apart, but actually Hans and Franz PUMPED ME UP! Sure the parking lot stinks, sure we had a chump waiter who did not dress up like all the others, but the food was as good as any German we have had in the Upstate, and that is all that matters to us. The Service - 2 Stars (we gave an underserved 15% tip) Our service was about average. Our waiter was not attentive, helpful or sociable. He added nothing to our experience nor followed our special instructions. Other customers enjoyed the company of costumed waitresses, whereas our waiter looked like he had just walked off the street in his old jeans and a t-shirt. He certainly did not represent the German theme of the restaurant, nor the Oktoberfest event. Very disappointing. For his lack of effort and pointless service we left him an undeserved $7.67 15% tip. We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: $5.00 German Beer - 3 Stars The price of draft beer is simply ridiculous. No wonder I never order alcohol. However, my Brauerei Gebrüder Maisel Weisse was not particularly cold, but it was very tasty. $2.95 Pretzel - 3 Stars This pretzel was soft, salty and good. The mustard sauce needed horseradish. My guest critic was not impressed, I thought it was about average. $2.95 Side Rotkraut w/ Apples - 4 Stars I can't express how much I hate cabbage, but this purple kraut is spicy, sweet and tangy. It is quite complex in your mouth and goes through several flavor phases. Some will call it complex, I just call it awesome! $6.95 Kraut Balls - 3 Stars More kraut... gag me! But these fried kraut balls and German potatoes are different. The flavor is really quite nice, but at this price it loses a star for poor value. Just too much per ounce. I would have preferred more balls and less potatoes, which by the way, is not even mentioned in the menu. $7.45 Reuben Sliders - 5 Stars Ruebens, I hate ruebens! But these little slider ruebens were simply phenomenal. Perfect appetizer. The best ruebens I ever hated! $8.50 Burgermeister - 4 Stars This burger is fabulous. My guest critic gave it four and a half stars. The fries were also great. But I don't give half stars, and I always round down. $15.95 Wursteller - 3 Stars This entree included three sausage links and two sides. The entree came with Bauernwurst, Weisswurst and Bratwurst. I selected Spaetzle and Bratkartoffeln as my sides. Both sides were very good and well seasoned. The flavor is great but the price per ounce is overly expensive! Total Bill: $62.00 for two adults including tax, an overly generous tip and two soda fountain drinks. This is more than you are likely to spend per person. Final Thought: I am not sure what to say about the poor food ratings at Hans & Franz. All the entrees we ordered were top notch compared to what you get elsewhere, and this is coming from a critic who truly dislikes German food.

I've never had German food before so I can't comment on the authenticity, but the food was OK. My potatoes were burnt but other than that not bad. I don't think the price is good for how little food they give you. The parking was terrible, the lot is very cramped and there's almost no room to maneuver when backing out or even when driving around looking for a spot. The service was terrible. We were seated at a dirty table and then someone came out with a rag and wiped crumbs all over us. The waitress took our drink orders and took forever to get our drinks to us, then took our order and I didn't see her again for the rest of the time I was there. Someone else dropped off our food and didn't leave any silverware. I had to ask two different people and wait about 10 minutes for silverware. No one ever refilled our drinks and I had to ask a random passing waitress for our bill. I definitely wouldn't come here again just based on the awful service.

So, very small place. take extra high blood pressure pills because the sodium content in all the food is ridiculous, However they do have a good choice of German beer if that's what your looking for a bar to hang out in then this is the place to be if you're looking for a good dinner forget it. Also very high price for what you get very small portions. There were four of us and we ordered an appetizer of sauerkraut balls which sounded delicious but it came with only three pieces you would've thought may be the waiter would've said something but he did not. Needless to say we will not be returning.

Really disgusted, sent chicken back and chef comes out and yells at our table. Very unprofessional, water was leaking from ceiling on my head Chef told us we will not get our money back, he even are some off our plates and said there is nothing wrong with it. Omg really

As a huge fan of Addy's, I expected to also become a quick fan of Hans and Franz. But to my surprise, that didn't happen. I love the atmosphere...brick walls, low lights, a bit of kitsch...as well as a lovely patio area. Unfortunately, that was balanced by oddly small portions of food, some of which were ok tasting, others less so. Nothing was great (and the Jaeger Schnitzel, although supposedly the same as Addy's, was not nearly as good). And our waitress was so grumpy and unenthusiastic that she actually made us feel uncomfortable asking her for anything. If you live or work near here, Hans and Franz is a comfortable and unique place for an after work beer (or weekend game-day, as they have sports on large screen tv's). As a restaurant, it's not worth the trip.

This is a European Beer Garden. This is a GREAT place to go and relax and enjoy conversation and beer. If you are a pretentious type go somewhere else. The recipes are authentic and well made but they ARE NOT AMERICAN food so expect the flavor profiles to be different but good. It will be crowed so expect service issues like anywhere else. I really like this place for a great change of pace.

They have the "German" look down but the food isn't anything to write home about. Beer list is nice but that's it.

Delicious pork chops. Nice selection of beer and wine. Service is consistently good. Atmosphere is unique with the exposed brick wall inside. Nice and cozy. Very nice outdoor patio as well.

Beer seletion is very good. Menu is 'very German'. If you don't like German food, there is nothing else really on the menu. Atmosphere and service are very good. Had diner there a couple of weeks ago, and the AC was either broke or not working properly. It was miserably hot. I haven't been back since.

surprisingly bad. Looks nice outside, old brick with character. Inside has decent atmosphere also. Hence was surprised that the food was bad. Certainly not worth what they were charging. Beer on tap is very limited and lacking. Overall, don't understand why there was a crowd.

This used to be a bakery, but now they are doing more interesting things with grain in there--namely, serving beer. The building houses an interesting German restaurant and bar. I'm still assimilating this experience. It's part sports bar with its 3 plasma television screens, part restaurant, part fully stocked bar, and part curio museum with anachronistic relics on display on the walls. There are life-sized mannequins on the walls: two of them are an anthropomorphic fox and a hare in 18th-century aristocratic garb, complete with monocle. There are large wooden barrels mounted on the walls. There is an odd 2-level structure to the building, which is a little mystifying. I can't help feeling I have gone into one of those Mystery Spot houses tourists go to. Outside is a small patio for summer revelry--the Berlin-style "Biergarten." Out there one hears American pop song artists like Paul McCartney while inside the restaurant they pipe in live German pop music stations. When I was a child I had recurring nightmares of clowns trying to kill me. Now while I'm eating, I can't help but fixate on those stupid mannequins. Am I safe? At first I couldn't figure out if this place is real German-German, American-German, or the dreaded pseudo-German. I decided on German-German for now. They stock over 20 varieties of German and Belgian beer. The menu looks like it offers a mixture pretty authentic German dishes and American dishes with a European flare. They sell a BLT sandwich, but it's served on focaccia bread. They have a hamburger, but it's the German version called a Burgermeister (Frikadellen) made of ground pork, fresh herbs, and curry sauce. The goulash soup is good with roast beef and herbs and potatoes, though it was a wee-bit salty. I've heard so much about Curry Wurst stands in Berlin, so when I saw the Curry Wurst and fries on the menu, I went for that. It was fun. That thing reminds me so much of Bagel Dogs I used to get when I lived in LA. (Can't find those anywhere now) It has a bun with a similar texture. The curry is not strong when you're eating it, but boy does it stay on your hands and haunt you like the Ghost of Christmas Past after you're done. The fries are homemade. Do you remember that scene in Pulp Fiction where Vincent Vega is telling Jules about " the little things" about Europe, like how they drown their French Fries in mayo? It's true. Here they use a mayo-curry-ketchup sauce. For purists they offer various wurst platters (the Wurst Teller sampler plate is pretty good), roulade, and schnitzels. (Their schnitzel sandwich is good, too.) The waitresses are sweet natured. They wear black and stare at you with brown eyes, sometimes joking. The sandwiches run about $6-7 each, and the dinner plates run about $12-20. Their desserts are Southern American like pecan pie. How about something a little more German like a Schwarzwald tort, huh? Yep, definitely going back. Hours (approximate--double check on these): Monday-Wednesday 5 pm--10 pm. Thursday-Saturday 11:00 am--12 pm. Sunday closed. Their Facebook page: facebook.com/pages/HansF…

It needs to be said that I'm married to a German so I'm pretty familiar with standard German food and beer. On the upside the biergarden outside looked nice and the inside is great. It has probably the nicest ambiance of the German restaurants I've been to in the US. On the down side both the food and beer were disappointing and the food prices are way too high. The beer selection wasn't horrible but it wasn't anything I would go back for. There isn't anything i could easily get elsewhere. Unlike my favorite german place in Charlotte which has a great selection of hard to find beers. The food I would say is American-German to follow the same lines of the first review. While the essence of the meals are German they are prepared in a very American way. The frikadelle are NOT German Hamburgers. They are supposed to be more like a meatball. And this was served as a hamburger on a bun. Not traditional and was really missing the flavor that I've become accustomed to in germany. The currywurst was served in a bun (not German) and had a little bit of curry ketchup on it. It's usually served sliced with a whole lot of curry sauce. The rouladen was so disappointing. It's usually a great dish and while this wasn't horrible I wouldn't order it again. It was too small both in portion size and the size or each piece. When it was placed before by first thought was steak-ums with a pickle in it. The service here was ok. Our waitress missed a beer order then brought the wrong one. I might be picky here but she should really understand what the food really is and understand how it's actually pronounced, even if she can't or doesn't pronounce it correctly. But this isn't the kind of thing that would prevent me from going back. Prices are. Food was WAY too expensive and I will not go back again because the food is not worth it. As an example we ordered a side order of the Bratkartoffeln which i thought was great, but for the $3 we got such a small amount it still makes me angry. Which leads me to overall portion sizes. Maybe they spent too much on the decorations and now have to serve half size portions to make up for the cost. Whatever the reason, the portions were tiny for how big the cost was. Would I go back? Not until I hear that the food has improved. I can stand higher prices but not at a place advertising German food and selling that. Also they need to fix the portion sizes. (or cost) Would I recommend Hanz & Franz to someone looking for good German food? No. The food taste was decent For most of it (although not authentic in the least) and the beer was good. That and the decor rated this Two stars for me.

Very good! Visiting the area from Charlotte, decided to give this place a try. The atmosphere is very nice, staff was very attentive and prompt. Food came out very fast. Our food was great and everything was delicious. Very pleased.
