Iama Critic Rating - Green Tomato Buffet - 2 Stars 1511 Woodruff Road, Greenville, SC Our Experience: It has been quite a while since our first Green Tomato Buffet experience. We originally visited because their ratings were quite high for a $9 buffet. However we discovered that except for the chili and the desserts, the ratings were not deserved. And now their ratings have fallen to a more realistic, but slightly generous level. But we always like to give a restaurant a chance to redeem itself so we returned to the Green Tomato only to find that their chili is now horrible, their desserts were not nearly as plentiful, and the cheesecake was missing altogether. The Service - 3 Stars (15% tip) The service we received was average. Our waitress did little more than fill our glasses. She was not attentive, helpful or social. For her lack of effort and social ability we left her a 15% $4.25 tip. We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Buffet $8.99 Fri-Sat Buffet - 2 Stars Overall the buffet at Green Tomato Buffet still reminds me of the food that was served in my high school cafeteria. Especially items like the salisbury steak, the chipped beef over rice and the fried shrimp and fish. Nothing we had was decent. The chefs at the Green Tomato Buffet still simply overcook everything to death. The fried and especially the grilled chicken are so dry you can barely choke it down. The pork chop was so thin it could be cooked in minutes, but instead this pork chop was cooked into a "pork chip". And the shrimp and fish are simply gross. Even the hush-puppies are cooked beyond overdone. THEY COOKED THE SOUL OUT OF THIS SOUL FOOD! Various Buffet Items: Fried Shrimp - 2 Stars Is there a shrimp in that coating somewhere? Fried Fish - 2 Stars How can fish be dry on the inside and soggy outside? Grilled Fish - 2 Stars Whoa, funky, something is wrong with this piece. Hush-puppies - 2 Stars How can a southern chef ruin hush-puppies? Mac & Cheese - 3 Stars Acceptable and average. Grilled Chicken - 2 Stars Burnt, overcooked and bone dry! Fried Green Tomatoes - 4 Stars Really good. Pork Chop - 2 Stars How do they cut pork chops this thin? Grilled Veggies - 3 Stars Not bad. Mashed Potatoes - 2 Stars Right out of the box. Salisbury Steak - 2 Stars Just like you had in high school. White Rice - 3 Stars It is just plain white rice. Chipped Beef - 3 Stars Not bad for S.O.S. (Military Reference). Chili - 2 Stars A sad excuse for chili, but it used to be awesome. Salad Bar - 3 Stars The salad bar was decent. But has lots of mayo and sugar. Dessert Bar - 3 Stars The desserts used to be awesome. Total Bill: $30.95 for three adults including tax, a tip and one $1.95 soda fountain drink. Final Thoughts: I had really hoped the Green Tomato Buffet would have upped its game, but I see they are cutting back on quality like so many other restaurants. What a shame, because I really missed the awesome chili and cheesecake they used to serve.

It was a buffet. That's the best I can say. There wasn't much of a variety. We all only had one plate. The desserts were mislabeled and mixed together. Their options change daily. I don't know if we just went on the wrong day. The server was very nice and attentive. It was priced OK. But usually at a buffet we get more than one plate except this time.

My wife and I were thrilled to eat there. The food was absolutely terrific. A great selection of meats and vegetables. Service was very good and all in all a good experience . I will go back.

Been there half a dozen times now and the food is pretty consistent. For a buffet the selection is pretty varied and changes enough that a return visit will allow you to try something you may have missed before. Take the kids ... even the picky ones will find something they like.

Husband, mother-in-law, and myself loved this place. The selection of food was pretty impressive. We didn't have a bad thing to eat. The only negative thing was there was so much food our stomachs didn't have the room to try it all. Everything from salad, fried green tomatoes (which were great! My first ever!), stroganoff, and oh my at the selection of desserts. As we left, my husband looked at me and asked "Did you rate them on yelp yet?!" because he wanted to make sure our experience got recorded. Is it gourmet? No, but it's classic southern buffet cooking. And a LOT of it. We really enjoyed it, we hope our future meals there can live up to the first one.

Horrible food and service. My fiancé wanted to try some new places around us in Greenville so we decided to try Green Tomato Buffet off woodruff rd. Upon walking in you can tell the place is small and the staff not professional at all. We sat and were greeted promptly by a courteous fellow and told to go up to the buffet when ready. Looking around we knew this place was trouble. Shady clientele and not much of a selection either. Let me say that I don't expect high class from a buffet but I do expect a selection. Their was none! No meat, just fried matter everywhere. I got the fried chicken (which was fried to a crisp) mashed potatoes (that tasted like it was from a box) and some fruit (which I found out was from a can). We tried to eat our food but it was so bad we left. Complained to the "manager" (lady wearing a hooded sweatshirt) and she said in three years no one has complained about the food...wait what?! Seriously?! Obviously a blatant lie. Long story short absolutely avoid at all costs unless eating food from a North Korean cafeteria is your thing.

Ladies do not support this business the owner tried to intimidate me by threatening physical harm when he rushed me and stood within an 1" of My face after I said "stop" when he was talking over me... I feel sure he wouldn't have reacted that way if a MAN had told him to stop when he was taking over him.

Think Chinese buffet for southern food. Price is great at less than $10 and the choices are plentiful. The desserts alone give you 6-8 choices of cakes, pies and more. The food is okay. Some better than others such as the chili was loved by my wife, while the mac and cheese while homemade was just okay to me. Other things were not good, such as the Fried Green Tomatoes which is kind of ironic. If you are looking for a lot of food for very little cost, check it out. They have a different menu each night, so call ahead to find out what is on it.
