Only go here is you like microwaved food. DETAILS: I came for lunch with a friend and had an enchilada and chile relleno lunch specioal. Service was good, but the food was awful. Tasted like frozen food that had been popped into the microwave. Certainly NOT freshly made. The cheese on the chile relleno was clearly "zapped". It was hard and crusty when delivered to the table. I had an upset stomach that afternoon. I will never, ever return. There are many better options nearby.

Very, very average. Service was okay, food was typical strip mall Mexican fare. I had a lunch combo- beans were good and covered in cheese, rice was dry and burrito was okay. It was quick and cheap. If you're looking for a $6 lunch and want something other than a drive thru burger, give it a try.

This place used to be my favorite place to eat. lately has been going down the hill who knows why! service its kind of slow food its different somewhat too salted.. defenetly not as good as it used to be!

This has been a favorite place for me to eat the past year, but last night I went there, the food was good as it used to be, but the service has become not very good. But the thing that made my experience most displeasurable was, as me and my date were eating, a ROACH crawled up onto and across the table!!! When we left I noticed that their sanitation grade is now a C, but October of last year it was an A. When one cockroach is ballsy enough to crawl across a table in light... There are many hiding elsewhere! It really is sad, I used to love the place, but they will no longer be receiving my business.

I lived near this place for years and it was my favorite place when i first moved here. They are under new management now and it shows because the food, and service is severly lacking. I want the old molcajete back!!

The service was good and the company was good. But this place has few redeeming qualities in the food or presentation. The pre-meal chips and salsa were bottom rung quality.

They are very, very fast. Like, in the time it takes me to write this review the server will have taken my drink order, brought out the drink with chips+salsa, and have busted out his pen & pad out to take my order. Yes, the food is like any other American-Mex restaurant. But sometimes you gotta have hard-shell ground beef taco. Go here if you want it super-fast.

Good food...fast service....we love this place!

Let me keep this short and sweet. El Molcajete is the real deal (obviously only if you're looking for quick, cheap, delicious American-Mexican food). Super fast, incredibly delicious and filling. Oh, have I mentioned the price? You can sit down for a lunch for two that will result in a much needed loosening of the belt...for $16. Enough said.

Best burrito of my life and I'm a 41 year old fat bastard. It was the California burrito. Chicken, shrimp, beef, beans, covered in a river of cheese, the size of my forearm and not a vegetable in sight. Healthy choice? Uh, no. Delicious? Si senior! Would absolutely eat here again.

Ate there twice in the last month and the food and service are both really good. I had the paralladas for one ($11) both times and it could Easily feed 2 adults. They also made me a cherry coke with real cherry juice from a jar rather than grenadine...DELICIOUS! The paralladas was one of the most expensive things on the menu and it comes with chicken, steak, chorizzo (spelling), and shrimp (usually an upcharge) for only $11. There were 7 in our party so it took a while (15-20 min) to get our food but it was worth the wait. There was also another party of 6 ahead of us. Just saying, it might not be the fastest place for a large party on a short business lunch but was great nonetheless. Great place in a strip-mall most people would normally overlook.

After reading several great reviews here in Yelpland I drove the fam down in the family truckster after my son's Little League game. We were hungry and I had a crazy hankerin' for some GOOD Mexican food. Sorry to say, this wuddn't it. Right off the bat the chips were greasy, unsalted, and chewy. The salsa wasn't completely awful but not very spicy at all. More like canned diced tomatoes run through a few turns of the blender. Would have been much better with some cilantro or something in it to give it a little more flavor. The meals. Look I never have sky-high expectations for Mexican food at this price point but I do expect it to have just a little zing at least. Everything on my plate was bland. The poblano pepper was covered with a layer of thick, white cheese that was cold and heavy. My beef enchilada wasn't all that bad but nothing to write home about. The tostada was soggy and tasteless. There were a couple dollops of guac on it but it, too, was bland and unappealing. What the...? Very disappointing. My wife said her vegetarian meal was "okay" but she couldn't make it through the cheese quesadilla that suffered the same issues as the cheese layered over my poblano pepper. Neither of my kids were impressed with their meals. Actually, the best thing about tonight happened by mistake. The waiter had brought my 7-year old tyke the wrong meal which was a taco. He said to just go ahead and keep it at no charge if we wanted to so I gave it a shot. By far the best thing I ate all night. They did that right and it even had a hint of spice to it. Yay! I'm giving it two stars because of the taco and the service. The waiter made an honest mistake with my son's order and was quick to correct it. Nice guy. But will we be back anytime son? Doubtful. Maybe the kitchen staff was just having an off night but I think I'll probably keep shopping. We just moved to Greenville about 3 months ago and look forward to finding our favorites of everything. The hunt will have to continue for quality Mexican at a reasonable price but I think we're up for the challenge!

I ordered the Filete Des Pescado ala Mexicano or as the server called it, "the what?". It is supposed to come smothered in jalapeños, onions and tomatoes. It came smothered in nothing. I poured salsa on it for a little flavor. The rice is good, much better than the fish. I ordered fries with it and they are just what you would expect. My wife ordered the Super Fajitas. They are so supper that, apparently, they don't need any tortillas cause we didn't get any. The flavor of them is ok. I guess the name "Just OK Fajitas with fatty cuts of beef" doesn't translate well. So, all of this is my opinion and clearly is quite the opposite of everyone else. Try Fonda Rosalinda's.

Greenville you do have a Mexican restaurant and El Molcajete is it. Although they do not have empanadas (most places in this part of the country do not - only in Orangeburg) they do have an excellent Mole (the flavors were complex with just the right amount of heat) and the shaved beef soft tacos are to die for! I am tired of so called Mexican restaurants that do not have shaved beef and pass off ground beef as the only way to have beef in mexican food. I just wish I could have finished my feast - boy was it GOOD. It really reminded me of Southern California when I lived there. I will be back.

The salsa is watery but the chips were good. No ambiance. Too stark and bright. Horrible music playing overhead. The only thing that was relatively good on my combination plate was the taco, stuffed full but the beef was not seasoned. This is the first mexican restaurant at which I've ever had to salt my food. The food was served quickly but that's because they put so little effort into preparing it. The tortilla on my enchilada was raw and inedible. So sad that we haven't found a mexican restaurant here that we love and would frequent regularly. Would have tried Fonda Rosalinda or El Matador but both were closed New Years Eve!

My fave Mexican restaurant for awhile now. The salsa is more than pureed tomatoes. I like that they use squash in several of their dishes. Thumbs up on the beans too. I know beans are a standard at any Mexican restaurat - that's why I judge them by their tacos & beans. If you can do the basics well I have faith in the rest to be good too.

The best thing about this restaurant was the politeness of our server. After that, I didn't think it was that special. The food was ok, even though not what I actually ordered... and my friend had to wait a long time before he received the two flour tortillas for his fajitas. For a cheap college hangout, I guess it is fine, except for the guacamole. It was the worst I have ever tasted.

One of the best in Greenville. Still has some taco-bell-syndrome (ground beef) but solid food overall. If you have five more minutes, go to Papa's and Beer for a five star mexican food.

The margarita was very good and the food was definitely decent. This place has some very stiff competition for this style of Mexican food so I gotta just give it three stars. Just nothing that special.

Besides Monterray's in Clemson, SC, this is my favorite Mexican restaurant. The food is good and the service is as well. Also, it's good food for the dollar. I'm a big fan of their enchiladas, so that's what I would go for if i was a first time visitor. Great establishment.

I love Mexican food, when I'm in the mood for it, nothing is quite as filling or satisfying. This is tops for Mexican restaurants in Greenville. The service is wonderful, servers have always been pleasant and attentive, and I have yet to be dissatisfied with anything, including beverages like their Margueritas. Good stuff.

My FAVORITE MEXICAN restaurant! I've lived in L.A. and the food here is better than there! :) Cheap, fast, good!

Very good food here. Service was excellent and kind. Chips and salsa were on the table in a matter of seconds. The entrees ordered were enjoyed all around. I don't think there was a single complaint at our table (a rarity). Have been numerous of times. Food quality is consistent.

Today, I ordered the cancun seafood entree. The sautéed vegetables were unevenly cook, some being burnt while others quite crunchy. The seafood including shrimps and scallops were low-quality. The crab meat turned out to be obviously cheap imitation crab meat. In addition, the side of steamed vegetables were way too over cooked. I would not recommend this dish; instead, try the burritos or fajitas. I would, however, recommend Papas and Beer near the Haywood Mall.

I don't know if it's different when you dine in but we ordered to go and were very unhappy with our meal. My husband ordered the salmon salad with ranch dressing. The salmon was extremely over cooked to the point of needing a knife then they put blue cheese instead of ranch. I had the carne asada plate. My steak was dry and like flavorless rubber. We will not be going again. One and done.

Love to eat here since it is a great deal for a college student. I cannot say enough about the Meat Rice soup. They use the beef filling from the enchiladas and their standard rice in a moderately sized bowl. They then cover all of that in some variant of the enchilada sauce so that it's more like a chunky stew. Its fabulous. And it's (wait for it...) less than $3!! Delicious and hearty for so cheap? Sign me up! The Burrito California was mentioned in another post.. He was right!! It's delicious! Chicken beef and shrimp doused in cheese. It's excellent especially with the Diablo Sauce (or whatever they call it). Be warned: it is crazy freaking hot and they ask if you've ever had it before. If you say no, they will advise you to get it on the side - do this at first. It will make you sweat bullets and look like a fool in front of your friends, but it is oh so good. The service is very fast as well! Enjoy!

Iama Critic Rating - El Molcajete 2 - 3 Stars 2435 East North Street, Greenville, SC Our Experience: Apparently this is the second El Molcajete restaurant, the sister restaurant perhaps to the El Molcajete Mexican Restaurant in Duncan. In any case we were drawn to El Molcajete because of the high number of Yelp reviews it has received. And these reviews are all over the map! How can a restaurant have numerous one, two and five star reviews? Either El Molcajete is extremely inconsistent or dozens of people got it wrong. After our visit I highly doubt those five star reviews because anyone that thinks that El Molcajete 2 is five stars has obviously not been to El Matador Restaurant. Both restaurants cannot be five stars when El Matador is easily twice as good but only marginally more expensive. However I will return to El Molcajete because they served the best chicken soup I have ever had in my life. Well at least it was when I sampled this five star perfection in a bowl. I just hope all the one star reviews are wrong and El Molcajete doesn't screw up their own recipe before I get back. The Service - 3 Stars (14% tip) The service we received was average at best. Our waitress did little more than fill our glasses. She was not attentive, helpful or social. All the entrees we received were delivered messy and required a lot of time and effort to prepare for photos. For her average performance we provided a 14% $6.73 tip. We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: Table Chips and Salsa - 4 Stars The table chips are the same you have had a thousand times so they are average. And the regular salsa is about average as well and lacks and chunky appeal. But the hot salsas are extraordinary and elevate the table chips up a star! Make sure you ask for some. $11.00 A Little Bit of Everything - 3 Stars This entrée is like most "Special Dinners" and comes with "A Little Bit of Everything". Namely it comes with a chalupa with a guacamole salad, a chile relleno, beef taco, enchilada, tamale, rice and beans. Portion wise this entrée is a value, but we found the flavor to be only a slight tick up from average. $12.00 Parrillada for 1 - 4 Stars Is there any form of meat this entrée does not have? It comes with Mexican sausage, shrimp, chicken and beef, all cooked wonderfully. However the presentation looked nothing like the menu as was more of less a mixed mess. But the flavor is awesome and it comes with your typical sides of really boring beans. However the rice, pico de gallo and the tiny side salad were a step above average. They don't call this entrée "fajitas" but they are as good as any you have had at this price. $11.00 Filete Plancha - 3 Stars The presentation of this entrée was just terrible. This discombobulated mess looked nothing like the menu photo. However the aroma and flavor quickly make up for the display. But the menu clearly indicates that this tilapia dish comes with grilled onions and French fries, neither of which I received. I was immensely impressed with the perfect half lime I received, which is extremely rare now days. $7.50 Sopa De Pollo - 5 Stars When perusing the menu I saw this ridiculously gorgeous photo of a bowl of chicken soup, so I asked my waitress if that is what I could actually expect to receive and she said "Absolutely"! It was quite a bold statement considering the beautiful photo. But when my bowl of soup arrived it was magnificent! The aroma coming off the soup is heavenly! The cilantro and lime was incredible. And on the side of my soup I received a perfect half lime. In all my years of doing restaurant reviews only three soups stand out in my mind, and this is one of them. Perfection in a bowl, and if you do not order it, then you have missed out on one of the best items you can find in Greenville. Total Bill: $58.00 for three adults including tax, a tip and three $1.99 soda fountain drinks. Final Thoughts: We could find no reason for El Molcajete's five star reviews, but we have a hard time believing the one star reviews also. Perhaps the answer is that sometimes El Molcajete serves the best chicken soup on the planet and the next week they serve a bowl of something far less heavenly.

El Molcajete is authentic and it is cheap, but the flavors are a little lacking. I'm not sure if I would go back or not. Right off the bat, the salsa was a little too sweet for me to enjoy it. The chips were thick and crispy, though. I ordered the chimichanga, which quite unmemorable. The beans and rice were both pretty average. I will say that you can enjoy lunch here for $6 and be quite full. Our service was good and friendly, so I wish the food was a little better.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
