A beer joint with classic bar food and lots of TVs. What are people expecting from this place? No, it's not haute cuisine but it is a great casual sports bar. Conveniently located across the street from the Poinsett Hotel on bustling Main Street, it easily accommodates large groups. It has two spacious floors and stays open late. In good weather, get upstairs where the ceiling peels back for optimal outdoor seating.

Large selection of craft beer. Lots of televisions with a number of games on. Friendly staff. Came here on a Thursday as part of a friend's bachelor party. The drinks were flowing and we had a great time. Te dry rub wings are tasty, and if you're into IPAs, I highly recommend the local Thomas Creek Trifecta. Not sure why this place has the lower average it does-if you're looking for a sports bar with good wings and craft beer, this place is for you!

Came here on a Sunday night at about 7:30. There was 3 or 4 parties waiting at the host stand because there was no host or hostess seating people. Probably waited close to 5-7 minutes to even be seated. After being seated we ordered and waited and waited for our food. Without exaggeration the food (chicken sandwich, buffalo chicken sandwich and a hamburger) took at least 30 minutes. We won't be returning anytime soon.

Slowest service. Roast beef on my sandwich was burnt and the fries were lukewarm. My friend got the "pick two" special, which came to the table all wrong. The waitress took it back and it took 30 min to get the right food. We came for a good, quick lunch but we have been here forever!

I am not a fan... it smells bad majority of the time. There is a rude bartender and it is severely overcrowded. Food taste awful. Have lots of alcoholic beverages before eating anything. Otherwise it will be disgusting.

My friends and I spent a few hours at Carolina Ale House at the end of a wedding weekend, getting food and killing time before shuttling off to the airport. It was a Sunday afternoon and there was a basketball game on, so this ended up being a good place to hang out. It was vibrant for a casual bar in the middle of a Sunday, but with plenty of seating and a moderate level of noise. We got a table for six upstairs, and a server came and helped us. Service was friendly and reasonably quick, both at the table and, later, at the bar. I had a post-wedding hangover, so didn't get a drink, but I did have a sip of my husband's Sweetwater IPA, which I remembered loving on a previous trip to Atlanta. A pretty great go-to beer. We ordered a bunch of food, and it was all good, definitely solid bar food. I got the Caribbean Club shrimp tacos, and these were much better than expected. The flour tortillas were nice, and they came loaded with Cajun grilled shrimp, crispy bacon bits, guacamole, pico de gallo, lettuce, and spicy mayo. They were really satisfying, with nice spice and a decent snap to the shrimp. I also enjoyed the Carolina spiced wings, which seemed to be a house specialty. We shared an order of twelve and demolished them. The chicken was tender and moist, well seasoned and baked, then tossed in a tangy Carolina-style BBQ sauce, with blue cheese dressing, celery, and carrots on the side. They were tasty and pleasantly spicy. The CAH Nachos also hit the spot in that gross way only loaded nachos can. These nachos came piled with grilled chicken, cheese sauce, pico de gallo, black bean corn relish, jalapeños, scallions, lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. Didn't take long for them to get soggy, but they still tasted right. There were also some seasoned fries on the table, which were crispy and very potatoey at the same time. I don't know that anyone needs to go out of their way for Carolina Ale House, but it's a neat spot with fair food and a relaxed bar atmosphere. I had a good time hanging out here, and I'd recommend it if you want an easy place to eat and drink.

Fun atmosphere while watching Clemson vs Louisville. Waitress is fantastic; super friendly and checks on us often. Food, by the way, great as well!

Uppity Update! Hey what's up? Anthony is the kewlest server at Alehouse! He's friendly without being fake, maintains a sense of humor when things get busy, and is always good at keepin' it rill. A beer from Anthony is a happy treat like killing a vole under the porch. Makes CAH a good experience downtown again. He could feed me ahi tuna any time! Thank you I know.

Wings came out microwaved. Not impressed. Just go there for drinks. Nice view on rooftop

Food is bland! My server seemed a bit off the tipsy side. Probably a stash of mini bottles in her apron. Bathroom was trashed with no toilet paper. By far an AWFUL experience. Should have walked a block further down Main Street. Somewhere that my money would have been better spent on

We stopped in the other afternoon and went upstairs to sit because we grabbed a seat downstairs at the bar (which was empty) and bartenders kept walking by us and no one SAID A WORD! However, the girls upstairs made up for their lack of communication. The bar upstairs was packed and we grabbed the last two seats. Within 2 min someone greeted us and got our drink order. The 2 girls up there deserve a raise! there had to have been 20-30 people at the bar and between that and making drinks they were on top of it!! We each ordered a beer and the nachos. The beers were good and the nachos were as well!! They were a pile of goodness!! A little on the spicy side but they were a good combination to our beers. We plan on coming back to try it again but I imagine we will go upstairs again :)

I have been to this location several times before and always had a great time. Beer is usually cheap and cold. There are a number of TV's so you can always watch you favorite game. The location is great as well. Next time we are in Greenville, I am sure we will make our way to the Ale House!

Nice atmosphere, food is mediocre at best. They were out of several IPAs at 4:00 on a Sunday. Fortunately they managed to find a Dogfish 90. I had the fish tacos, which were mostly bland. Someone else at my table had the Greek chicken pizza which was really tasty.

I have never eaten here, so I can't speak to the quality of the food and/or the service. However, their recent lawsuit against Ale Yeah Craft Beer in Atlanta certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Any business that engages in frivolous lawsuits such as this one is not one which I wish to patronize.

We were in Greenville for 3 nights. First day we walked downtown and decided where we wanted to eat. We wanted a dog friendly place. However, right before we left it began to pour so Aspen had to stay in the RV. We ended up here. We were disappointed from the moment we walked in the door. The hostess was having some indigestion issues. She could not even speak to us till she finished burping?? After that uncomfortable few seconds she sent us upstairs. There the hostess began to seat is. We asked if we could sit by the front window where there were two empty tables. Her response. Was "I don't know" and kept walking. So we asked again thinking maybe she did not understand us. We got the same response. Disappointed again. The menu was typical sports bar food. I ordered a blueberry martini. Ready for disappointment number three?? It was not authentic. It was made from sweet blueberry syrup. The color was beautiful, but the taste was horrible. I reordered sticking to something never disappointing BEER. Ok hold onto your buts here comes disappointment number four. When the description of a Greek pita has feta cheese and olives in it, one can only imagine my face when my entree had two crumbles of feta and absolutely no olives!!!!! Don't go here unless you it's football season because the only positives were there are plenty of tvs, plenty of room, and good beer.

Never been here, but filing a trade mark infringement action against a Georgia-based craft beer retailer is aggressive and has all the markings of a bully. Not the kind of business I would ever support.

We didn't eat here, so this is just a review for the bar and service. We visited the Ale House twice during our time here -- the first at the request of another group we were meeting with (just a quick stop for a beer or two), and the second was largely because everything else was closing up for the night and we weren't ready to go to bed. The first visit, we had a reasonably competent waitress, although she didn't really know anything about the bar (I guess the part of the menu that says, "Ask your server about our seasonal beer selection!" wasn't talking about her, because I just got a blank look when I did exactly that). The first two beers I asked for were out, calling into question the claims of "Look How Many Beers We Offer!" printed in various wordings around the menu. Maybe it's just a bad day and they haven't had time to restock or whatever. Third time's a charm, I got my beer. The second visit, we sat at the upstairs bar rather than a table. I ordered a beer. They didn't have it. I ordered another. Nope. Another. Nope. The bartender said, you should probably pick four or five, and I might have one of them. So I mentally selected a few more and asked for them one by one. He didn't have ANY of them. Come on! Finally I found an acceptable one, even though it wasn't what I wanted. There seems to be a pretty massive disconnect between the beer menu and the beer selection, so if you're stopping in for a drink, make sure you have a few backups selected.

Hits the mark for a sports bar. Ice cold craft beers and plenty of lickies, chewies and fatty cakes to munch on. They serve beer flights here but this doesn't have the characteristics of a beer snob ale house. Try the Thomas Creek Trifecta if you like IPAs

    (4)
  • Barbara W.

Why did the waitress just bring me the check when my beer is only 1/4 gone? That seems shortsighted. I guess we will be going somewhere else for a beer now...

    (2)
  • Tom B.

Had the bbq wings really good! The onion straws were great. My wife had the boca burger not good at all.

    (4)
  • Eric I.

You know, for what they are, they are as expected and maybe a touch above. I don't disagree with most of the reviews except the ones on the two extremes. Considering the location, if I want a steak or a good fish or a chef prepared meal, seriously now, what are you doing here? But beer selection, excellent and personally, I like their Taps, and gives me a chance to explore options. Dinner prices are fair, portions usually pretty big, and above average sports bar type food. Lots of tables, huge bar(s), lots of TVs and room for a rowdy crowd of my customers. Staff is the typical mid 20's crew and are hit or miss, more miss as the crowd gets bigger. Keep reasonable (or even low) expectations on staff and you'll either be pleasantly surprised or proven correct. For me, I've had fun with the staff and will always return.

Just awful. AWFUL. Have unfortunately ben there a few times. First two times with friends, couldn't even get a waitress to take an order. Finally walked out, both times. Second time (after I begrudgingly returned) we mentioned this to the manager, who could not have cared less. Went an additional time to the bar to kill an hour downtown, but waiting 30 min to get a drink, to no avail. Did eat there once - had the pizza. It might have been the worst pizza I've ever eaten in my life. No surprise. SO many loud backwards-baseball-cap types. Awful place. Awful atmosphere. Awful service. Awful food.

After seeing the outdoor seating area, my kids (teens) and I decided to try this place out. Service was great, but that's it. The outdoor corner we sat in had no airflow and it was stifling. Most of the balcony was open and airy, therefore much cooler. We ordered the cheese fries- meh. Not bad but nothing to write home about. Then the food came. My son had a hair on his food. We told the waitress and he got a new order and we were not charged. My fish taco had virtually no fish but TONS of slaw and salsa. It was so liquidy that the tortilla was soft and mushy. My daughter got the chicken Caesar salad. Just ok, like any other salad anyplace else. Our waitress was great. This would be a great place for beer, but beyond that, nope!

I was visiting downtown Greenville and had planned to eat at Wild Wings Café. But the smells coming from Carolina Ale House were fantastic so we decided to eat there. That was a mistake. The service was horrible (a server who apparently believed we were there for her benefit) and the food was at best mediocre. And that might be too generous a word. Avoid.

  • Jay P.

Stopped in here for a quick supper since I was staying close by and some of the other restaurants were full. The service was only mediocre, my server kept sitting down in the booth while taking order...didn't really act like he wanted to be there. Food was ok, facility was a bit grungy, it is a bar primarily so understood but think they could wipe down things better. If you mostly want to eat would try somewhere else - too many other choices downtown.

One of the best bar/ restaurants ANYWHERE!!! Cheap. Friendly. Awesome space. Great food. Friendly servers. On Main Street. I live here where I visit Greenville every June.

Iama Critic Rating - Carolina Ale House - 3 stars 113 South Main Street, Greenville, SC Overall: Beautiful and tasty food at reasonable prices. But a few items were less stellar. Our salad was pre-made and the salmon was too small or too expensive. Good service could have made a difference but sadly the service was all too normal, meaning that, like most restaurants now days, it was terrible! Our server made no effort whatsoever to do anything beyond fill our glasses. A monkey could do that, and monkeys only get 10% or less. $4.99 Bowl of Chili - 4 Stars It was an unusual and very good chili, perhaps in the top 20% of all restaurant chilis. It was meaty and thick, but I wish the bowl was a little bigger. $14.49 Grilled Teriyaki Salmon - 3 Stars I ordered the salmon minus the Teriyaki. It came with a rather plain and ordinary three star side salad. The rice was also plain and boring, the grilled vegetables were good but needed a little more grilling. The salmon was perfectly cooked and I really liked the condiment mix. However it is about time that restaurants start telling customers exactly how many ounces their salmon entrees are, because this is the fourth restaurant in a row that vastly over-rated the actual portion size. Which in this case is simply too small for $15, no matter how well it is cooked. We automatically deduct one star for any false advertising, whether it comes from the website, menu or the server. $8.29 Reuben - 3 Stars This reuben came with cole-slaw. Restaurant Reviews has had a seriously good run of great reubens lately and this reuben could fit right in with them. However, for $8.28 this reuben is simply too thin on the meat and the toasted bread could use a little butter. It is good, but it is not great. $9.39 Baja Chicken Salad - 3 Stars This gorgeous, but somewhat small, salad was hampered by the fact that CAH is trying to save a little money and partially pre-make them. The chicken strips and the guacamole were "freezer" cold. The meager portion of chicken was also not grilled! And those tortilla strips were utterly terrible. Wow, such a shame for a salad that looked so wonderful! This could easily have been a four star salad, but it wasn't. $8.99 Pub Burger - 3 Stars This burger has the potential to be great, but was served cold with horrid cheese. And the onion strings were cold and greasy. How long does a burger sit under a heat lamp for cheese to crust over like that? Mind you that this is Carolina Ale House's "Signature Burger" and we even told our worthless waiter that we were there to review the restaurant. Our guest critic is a "Master Burger Taster", so would you serve him this old and cold burger? If you do, you get 3 stars! Side Salad - 3 Stars This side salad came with most of the major entrees. It was rather plain and ordinary, although the cleverly sliced cucumber was a nice touch. However, ordinary salads get ordinary ratings.

Go here for the drinks and not the food. Excellent selection of all different kinds of beer. I have had a problem with selecting beer off their menu on several occasions they did not have. They do offer an extensive enough selection that I can always find something I like. Ordered hot wings and they were not very good (and I was given 11 instead of 12... How hard is it to count to 12). Wings are breaded which is definitely a negative... Why not also offer them naked; no more trouble. Very limited number of flavors... would've liked to have had a slightly hotter buffalo as an option.

Awesome beer choices. Great place to watch sports. Huge chicken nachos!

  • Carolyn B.

Stopped in because our previous two choices had too long of a wait line and we both needed to eat. The onion string appetizer was great. It came out hot and not overly greasy. It was what I hope for when I order this dish. We waited a bit for our entrees but the server told us they were finishing up my partners order. I had the pub burger. It was cooked the way I ordered and they left off the pickles and lettuce as requested. It was a good burger but the onion straws on the burger itself left an oil slick in my mouth. The fries are batter dipped...in what I think is the same batter for the onions. I personally love batter dipped fries so for me this was my highlight. My partners pizza was another story. She ordered the meatlovers one and when we got it...it was barely luke warm. Remember this is what caused us to wait so we expected it to be hot. The crust was good...light and crispy. There was way too much sauce and very little cheese and those along with the meat were the absolute wrong temp. It tasted like after the crust was baked, they tossed the toppings on and put it back in the oven for 1 min. Probably won't go back. Server was great. But with so many choices downtown with much better food...why would I eat at a place that mostly serves food I can either make at home or get better at Chilis?

We stopped in with friends for a Sunday afternoon bite. The good- I love the fried pickles. They were awesome. My buffalo chicken sandwich was great. Spicy and crunchy. My husband's Philly was overflowing with meat, cheese, peppers and onions. The bathrooms are sparkling. The bad- Took a long time to get our food. The fries are different. I didn't love them. I can't really place the flavor, but they are battered. The ugly- Nothing. Everything was pretty okay.

We made the mistake of coming here for dinner. Maybe if you're looking for subpar food and poor service, at least that's what we got, then this is your place. The spinach and artichoke dip seemed to be melted mozzarella cheese with a shred or two of spinach. The ribs were okay but the baked beans were awful. The kids pizzas looked horrible and that explains why neither of my kids touched theirs. I asked if the side of fruit was mostly melon and was told "no" but of course when it arrived it was cantaloupe with 2 grapes. Our server was extremely slow and we had to track her down several times. Not a good experience.

The retractable roof upstairs is pretty nice when it's 72 and sunny out. My first time visiting here and the customer service is a 2 out of 5. We ordered the meat head pizza and asked for ranch ahead of time. The pizza was delivered without ranch, no big deal but when we asked if we could have ranch Brittneigh said yes but after waiting about 15 mins we realized she didn't care to do her job. She made eye contact with us a few times and rolled her eyes. Finally, I walked all the way downstairs to the kitchen myself and asked for a ranch. Luckily I knew the girl working down there from high school and she was able to help me without any problem. Needless to say, it's said to have an employee pick and choose what she feels like doing while on the clock.

What I have concluded.... Why you go to ale house. 1). Only place open late downtown that serves food 2). Only place downtown that has sports on with the volume on for big games 3). Good selection of cold draft beer 4). Nice outdoor patio on good days Reasons to avoid ale house... 1). Food is sub-par. Never been impressed 2). Service is sub-par. 3). Have to run through a tunnel of smokers to get in the front door 4). Music upstairs is always too loud and with no direction - think random 80s & 90s I typically find myself there when looking for 1&2 above, otherwise not in my rotation

    (3)
  • Robert J.

Of all the places downtown, this has to be the worst. The only reason I could think to go is during happy hour, but try to stick to something bottled or straight-up. Everything that comes out of their taps(beer & soda) tastes dirty and flat. There's some decent staff, but mostly unfriendly and more interested in eating, texting or hanging out with their coworkers than actually serving.

  • Odie M.

Food is great bartenders and hostesses are smoking hot beer is affordable and there are like 900 TVs.... Best place in town to watch a football game.

  • Brett K.

I will start by saying that this place has an awesome atmosphere and a good beer selection. That's literally the only reason I continue to return. The service at the bar is hands down the worst service I've ever received. The bartenders are all clearly miserable and hate their jobs and they have no problem communicating that to the customers, with or without using words. Too bad Greenville doesn't have another bar with a similar atmosphere and bartenders that don't hate their lives.

The downtown Ale House location is one of my favorite places to go for a sporting event. There are TV's everywhere, even on the roof when you can sit outside in the sun. The frickles are great! As is all of the food. I have been here on multiple occasions and definitely plan to return.

  • Austin G.

Has a retractable roof....they use it to throw customer service right out the window. I literally avoid this place unless I have friends I can't talk out of wanting to go here. Beer selection is great but the staff are incompetent and rude. It's not that hard guys.

  • Adam B.

Sat upstairs where they had a retracting roof. Great night for outside dining. Food was good as well. Had the buffalo chicken sandwich. Burgers looked good though.

Loud and crowded. Reminds me of one of those places you try to get into with a fake ID when you're under 21 in college. And I might have liked it more if I was still underage myself, but I'm a grownup now. Came here with a party of over 10 people and half of us got sick later that night after gulping down the greasy food here. If you're used to beer and bad food at sports bars, you might be OK. BOTTOM LINE: Wouldn't come back here even if someone paid me to.

Each time I come into town, Ale House seems to be our first stop when we go downtown. I was part of a group of 7 females on a Friday night. We always head up stairs because downstairs seems to be where most of the families and younger kids hang out. They couldn't quote us a wait time because most of the bar goers were there to watch the basketball games. We headed for the bar. As most people have stated in other reviews, the beer selection is impressive for Greenville. It was a nice night so the retractable roof was open which gave us a great view of downtown. We managed to find a couple of small tables side by side. We noticed that it had been about 30 minutes since we put our name on the wait list but we all had beers to keep us occupied. A male waiter approached us and let us know that he would get us at one of his tables soon and he did just that. He was actually a perfect fit for our table of sassy sarcastic females. I wish I could remember his name but he was tatted and mentioned he was a former Marine. He immediately got us all refills and took our app order. Once our drinks arrived, he took our food order so that everything was timed perfectly. Since most of us had been servers or bartenders in our past, we put a little extra pressure on him and he delivered. Our drinks never got less than half full before he was checking to see if we needed more. He made us laugh, checked on us regularly and put on a little charm which didn't hurt his tip. The food is pretty standard for a sports bar but they have exceptional items. The pizzas are actually very good and big enough to share with a couple of people. I managed to sneak a couple bites of a salad and french dip (carolina dipper is menu name) which both were really tasty. The bar is actually quite big with several large tvs all the way around. Actually tvs are all over the place upstairs. Crowds can vary, especially upstairs. Most people start the night out at the Ale House before venturing to smaller bars downtown. The weekends are going to be the most crowded but it's also the most fun. There is actually a valet for the Ale House which is a HUGE BONUS!! The lot is small but the guys have secret places (as they called it) throughout downtown to park. The only reason I gave them 4 out of 5 stars was that when we went to get our keys at the valet, they couldn't find them. The guy told us that he had just came out there and the original attendant was gone. He tried to call him on his cell but obviously the guy didn't want to be bothered. We decided to walk to my car in case the original guy left the keys in it, which was at the end of the (small) lot. And to my horror, there was my keys in the ignition will all 4 windows rolled down. The poor kid apologized several times about that happening even though it wasn't his fault. Luckily my car wasn't stolen and all was good.

In Greenville on business, I decided to swing by their rooftop bar for a drink since it was a nice Tuesday night. I sat at the bar for 5-10 minutes before successfully flagging down a bartender for a beer menu. She found one for me then I never saw her again. At least 2 other bartenders walked past me as I tried my hardest to make eye contact. After another 5 minutes, I flagged down a different bartender (the manager?) to place my order. He got my beer but took a curiously long time getting my change since the register was literally right behind him. Bottom line: you should never have to work so hard to get a beer at a bar, at least at a bar like this in the middle of the week. So much for Southern hospitality!

    (1)
  • Cedar B.

The 2 stars are for the atmosphere of the rooftop bar and the beer selection. Having worked in the service industry for 10 years, the service at this place is an embarrassment and shame. Inattentive, no eye contact and you have to go out of your way to get the bartender to recognize you no matter how slow or busy. We used to live downtown and would stop in at times to catch parts of a game. Always hoped the service would be better but seems to get worse each time. Most of the bartenders appear as they have the worst job ever. There is one descent bartender. Unfortunately I'll probably go back. Hopefully this place gets there shit together but not likely as they are playing the numbers game.

The ale house is excellent for both food, atmosphere, and ball games. During football season, if you are a hulu/netflix person; if you are a non-cable person, you will live here. The prices are excellent, the service is amazing, and the the quality of the food is pretty good. You can do better in town for any one of the three, but if you want to watch march madness or a bowl game, there are very few options that rival the Ale House.

I was in Greenville for the weekend during April 2013 and ended up at this place. We had lunch on a Sunday afternoon on the second floor of the restaurant. I really enjoyed this place as there is nothing remotely like it in Metro Atlanta where I live. The second floor was built to where there was an open patio out in the weather as well as some covered, indoor portions. They have an elongated bar area with several flat screen TV's and each one is showing a different sport. On a Sunday afternoon I had my choice of watching football, baseball, basketball, soccer, Nascar and either Rugby or Australian rules football (did not study it enough to determine which one it was). That is the ultimate sports collection right there my friends. I was with my wife and our 7 year old son and the place was playing music pretty loud. Ordinarily it would have bothered me but they were playing classic tunes from the 70's, 80's and 90's and had all those earliere mentioned sports on the TV. I loved it! Now on to the food. We had an appetizer platter that had cheese sticks (very good), chicken fingers (mediocre) and hot wings (pretty good but they were breaded which I did not know until they came out). I ordered their Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. They are one of the restaurants that do not understand that a Good Philly has American Cheese on it as opposed to Provolone so I almost did not order it. However, I asked the waitress if she could substitute and put American on it and she said yes. When the sandwich came out they had put yellow American cheese on it. When the food runner brought it out and I saw it was yellow, I almost sent it back. Phillly's are supposed to have White American cheese folks.....not yellow. But I decided to give it a try and it was surprisingly good. So overall, I would give my food experience a 3.5 stars rating. But the atmosphere and the huge selection of different sports that were available to watch makes it a 4 star rating. I will definitely try to make it back here next time I am in town.

The pulled pork apples and the BBQ pizza were delicious. We sat outside and it was really loud because they were moving furniture around upstairs. The service was good, the food and drink refills were a little slow. Overall it was ok.

I am consistently getting dragged here by people who want to watch sports. Listen, I want to watch sports too, but there are a dozen places I'd rather do it than Carolina Ale House, including but not limited to my own home. The food is hit or miss. I've had dishes that are okay, but generally they're not good and I've never had anything that stood out to me. It's loud. And always, always crowded. I've never had outright bad or rude service, but it's definitely always slow. The patrons, however, ARE rude. Seriously, every time I've ever been here, it's just awful. The last time I was forced to stop in, the entire second floor smelled like vomit. I don't even want to know why. There's a decent beer selection, but you can get as good of one - or better - at plenty of places in downtown Greenville, without having to deal with the douchey college kids that patronize Carolina Ale House.

Why do I continue to go here! I am always disappointed. The service is terrible, the food is mediocre, and the glasses need a good scrubbing (you can feel the dirty film on the pint glasses or see some weird things floating in the bottom when you haven't even taken a sip yet). The rooftop bar and awesome tvs are the only upsides so I keep trying to give it a chance. Hire a good staff that treats customers nicely and they could make a killing. I often will sit and wait 10 minutes for the first beer due to in attentiveness (aka...they are talking or just walking by like you are invisible). Then when you want the check they seem annoyed.

They let my dog in to eat with us the first time. We sat at the indoor patio out front. The second time we came they didnt let my dog in and said no dogs allowed. If they dont want my money then I wont be coming back.

The only thing this place has going for it are a lot of TVs. The food is bad. Not sure how a sports bar can have bad bar food. I have also always found the bartenders upstairs inattentive and slow. So many better options in Downtown Greenville.

I went with my co-workers after work and there was something for everyone, pizza, wings, veggie burgers, and steak. Great service, good food, great beer, what more could you ask for in trying to make everyone happy? Will definitely be going back!

Carolina Ale House in a word: crowd pleaser. Last time we went here for dinner, the vibe was laid-back and comfortable. If you're looking for a gooey, high-cholesterol treat, get the cheese fries with ranch dressing. You may not be able to eat this appetizer with too much regularity, but let me tell you, it's pure deliciousness on a plate. The turkey avocado wrap was dry and had too much turkey, but I was pleasantly surprised by the fish tacos. Dinner at Ale House is especially a treat when the retractable roof is... Well, retracted. It lends to an ambience of big city living while still being cozy. At night, Ale House can be ridiculously crowded but you're (almost) always guaranteed a good time. Their giant beer on tap selection lets everyone find something suitable. I've always enjoyed the scene here because different groups come to Ale House, which means you can do a whole night of socializing with different folks without ever stepping back out onto Main St.

FAT TUESDAY!!! Chad was amazing and so was Gary!! The entire staff was awesome I love this place!!!! Probably the best time me and my friends have had here!!! Defiantly recommend everyone to come here!!! Everyone had a positive attitude and it was an amazing environment!!!

Terrible food. Rude service. Typical low rate, low class restaurant that scams first time guest. Pass if you can. Even the beer is terrible. Hoping they go out of business and we get a good restaurant.

Carolina Ale House is the poorest excuse for a "beer bar" that I've ever experienced. If you're looking for a place to watch a football game with cheap beer and mediocre food, then Ale House would be a good decision. They do have a long beer list, but I have NEVER come across a server who knew anything about their beers and the majority of the time they're out of what I ask for. The servers are so unfamiliar with the bottled beer list, I find myself having to point to beers just so that they'll know what to look for in the cooler. Last night I asked our server (at Ale House on Woodruff Rd) to tell me what kind of beer something was that they had on tap (I just wanted to know the style of beer because it wasn't listed, didn't even ask what it tasted like), he shrugged his shoulders and laughed. I said "Come on, man. You call yourselves an Ale House? You don't even know what this local beer is that you have on tap?" His reply to that was "It's a really long beer list! Have you seen it?! I can't know everything!" I have seen it. And I could tell you about 90% of that menu just from personal experience....and you better dam* believe I'd be able to tell you about those beers if it was my job. Really awesome training you have going on over there Ale House. Really awesome. In short - The most exotic food you'll get is an "Asian Chicken Salad" topped with minced chicken and doused in bottled wing sauce. The most exotic beer that the server will recommend is Blue Moon. If you think this sounds exciting, then go check it out. You'll probably have an awesome time. And while you're out on the town, there's a TGIFriday across the street. Go have a big time.

Convenient and Practical. I love a good sports bar with endless choices of beer. Unfortunately that's about the only appeal to this place. Food is under par and service was bad. You can get a nice buzz, full stomach, and a ball game for a reasonable price. Not a bad choice if your looking for somewhere practical and convenient.

  • Rick S.

It's a sports bar with mediocre food. Good selection of beer. Pretty good for groups. Seems to be popular as there's a line to get in. The only real plus for me was that it's reasonably priced. Got out for $13 for a hamburger and draft beer at happy hour.

  • Robert B.

Poor service. Rude employees. We were shouted at by one particularly sour-mooded bald gentleman. He repeatedly screamed at and threatened multiple patrons. The entire place lacked professionalism or even the common courtesy you'd expect from a McDonalds. Will not be returning and would not recommend to anyone.

I really have mixed feelings about this place. The service is great and the beer list is the the best I have found in Greenville. They have every kind of brew you might want and most of it on draft. I ordered the chicken wings, and they were undercooked. To be fair, they were huge. Just make sure to tell the staff to make sure they are cooked all the way. My main problems with the place is that it is loud and crowded. That being said, I enjoy the atmosphere, just not so much with my children.

    (3)
  • Amanda P.

So crowded and sweaty but I'd say its a win on a weekday night or if you wanna catch a game with a round of beers and a buffalo chicken pizza. Also, I will say I prefer ale house in the summer--open rooftop adds like 30+ points in my opinion.

Arrived in town late this was the only place open. Service was so-so. I know a lot about beers and was looking for something specific. They have a huge beer menu and I was excited about that. I love trying different beers. The waitress knew nothing about the beers on the menu when I asked. You'd think an "ale house" would educate their wait staff on beer? Although quiet there the service was slow. Several times we had to get her attention to get another drink and we had to ask someone who our waitress was when we sat waiting when we arrived. Burgers we had were top notch though. If you want 1000 TVs for sports watching and a vast beer selection and good burgers this is the place. Service the night we were there. Painfully slow.

NOT RECOMMENDED! Horrible service! Arrived w/ 3 friends & sat at the bar. Immediately served, but it took 20 minutes to get our order taken. No one made eye contact w/ us, had to flag down someone to get our orders taken. For it being a Saturday night the bar was somewhat busy, but nothing crazy so there was no excuse why it took so long for this to happen while sitting at the bar. We looked to order more drinks & that too took about 20 minutes because no one would make contact w/ us or check on us. One of the bartender's dressed up as Ricky Bobby from Talledega Nights & wouldn't respond to Ricky Bobby. We ordered fish & chips, Carolina dippers, & a turkey gucamole wrap. The dippers came out first then the wrap. We had to flag down the manager to get the fish & chips that had been sitting in the window apparently. The food was nothing special. I had an empty glass in front of me & had a bartender pour a drink right in front of me & not ask if I needed another one. About 10 minutes later finally another bartender poured me a drink. Watched a bartender grab a wet glass & not dry it off before pouring wine into it & passing it on to a customer. A group of patrons came in & sat next to us & they apparently knew one of the bartenders who immediately smiled & asked' whatcha drinking tonight?'. Meanwhile 2 empty glasses, 2 half empty drinks, & finished plates sat in front of us for about 15 minutes. No eye contact from either bartender. At that point we decided we weren't drinking anymore. I raised my hand for about 5 minutes to get their attention so we could pay the bill. No response. We decided to leave since they already had our cards on file to charge the bill so we didn't have to wait any longer. No one left a tip due to the horrible service. *Spoke w/ 4 different people that have worked there & tried the place out & all had horrible reviews as well **Checked today to see if I was charged extra than the original bill on my credit card, apparently the bartender decided to tack on his own tip of $5 on my $21 tab!!

This is my first Yelp review being as I work in the service industry and I realize how detrimental they can be to an establishment. I felt obligated to write a review about my experience at Carolina Ale House. I went to Carolina Ale House at about 5pm with my boyfriend and his father. We ordered a beer each and 2 appetizers. We finished our appetizers and all ordered entrees (however, the server continued to pressure us for our entree order). After our 4th beer each, a manager approached the table saying we were cut off because we had sat at the table for 2.5 hours. We were confused and insulted. Not only had we come to the bar to relax and watch the ncaa basketball games, but we were there to discover new local places. When we asked the manager what we had done to be cut off she responded saying we had 4 beers in 2.5 hours meaning we must be drunk. However, she did not take into consideration that we had 2 large appetizers and each had our own entree. On the way out, we noticed a long waiting list for a table and figured that was the reason they would no longer serve us. All in all, a very crappy experience. Not only do the servers not know ANY of the beers on the list (trust me I asked only to be told she only has tried ciders) but the managers do not know how to run a successful bar business. They have tvs and act like they are a sports bar but they have a diner mentality- turn tables as quick as possible. Take my advice and avoid this "sports bar".

I was visiting good friends and we wanted to watch a few college football games before our mighty Alma Mater played that evening. We headed to the Ale House and it was the perfect spot. We went upstairs to the open air bar. There are a few tables in the sun (too hot for this September afternoon) and plenty of tables and bar stools in the shade. The large oval bar has TVs side by side and around the curves. There were some where north of 10 screens and being able to see the sun and get some fresh air was a wonderful change from the usual dark and damp sports bar I have frequented in the past. You know the kind, you walk out after your 12:00 game ends and have a vampire like reaction to the sun as soon as you walk outside. It is bar food, nothing special per se, but nothing awful either. We had some nachos, numerous beers and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. To Recap: The Good: Watching football outside in beautiful weather. I love the South. The Bad: If you can't grab a spot upstairs and it fills up pretty fast, you are out of luck. The Band This Restaurant Most Resembles: Imagine Dragons. I didn't think outdoor football games at bars existed.

This place is pretty good. Fairly standard pub grub, but it's a good place to come hang out on gameday or on a Saturday night. The upstairs bar has a retractable roof, which is pretty near. The service is generally pretty good, considering it's pretty packed all the time. The kitchen is open late as well, so if you get the muchies, you can have a fish taco/cheese fries snack. The location is pretty convenient as well, since it's pretty much right in the middle of downtown.

Love the food here! Their wraps are my favorite! The other food is good as well. I like that the layout of this one is Clemson on one side, Carolina on the other (Go Cocks). There are plenty of TV's to watch sports on and the staff is super friendly. This Ale House has an upstairs section as well, which tends to get crowded fast on the weekend nights, but does have a nice view. I am usually downstairs, as I tend to grab a bite to eat and then stay for some drinks. The bartenders are friendly and quick, and often a riot!

We visited the Carolina Ale House while spending the Night in Greenville on the way to a Clemson Football Game. Our Friday Night visit could not have gone better. Some in our party found the larger selection of beers confusing but our waiter was more than capable of explain the different selections and we enjoyed our choice. The food was very good and served hot direct from the kitchen. I had the wings which were quite tasty, and more than enough to satisfy me. There are televisions everywhere so you can enjoy a wide variety of sports from just about any angle. We found that the entire staff of the Carolina Ale House were outstanding, they were professional, friendly and knowledgeable. I look forward to returning the next time I am in the Greenville area.

I have to admit, arriving dead last and at 130 AM might've effected the way our service was given, but, this is an Ale House with flat screens blasting ESPN and Sports everywhere! That is simply not an excuse. As a group of five, we had to grab our own menus and things went downhill from there. I was not impressed with the service and the meal came way too late. I would try this place again, but, for the experience, I was not impressed one bit.

Went here with my wife and enjoyed it quite a bit. We got the Buffalo Honey wings to start with and while they are breaded, which we are not normally for, these were quite good. The sauce was so good we asked for a side of it for the rest of our food. I got the Triple B burger and it was delicious. Ordered it medium and it came out medium. Blue cheese was fresh, wing sauce was good on it and the portion was plenty. Wife got the buffalo chicken pizza. Delicious and for the money, a great portion. Service was good as well. Always there with a refill and extra napkins when needed and the cost was right in line with what we expected to pay.

I just returned from my lunch break at the Carolina Ale House, and was very happy with my experience. I sat at the bar with Sabrina and she was very friendly and prompt. Normally I get the blackened chicken sandwich, but today I decided to try something new and ordered a Southwest Chicken Philly and was shocked at the size of this thing when it came out. I immediately cut it in half, but ended up overeating and finishing the whole thing as it was so tasty. Even though I was sitting alone at the bar, a manager made sure to come by and ensure everything was good, the first time this has happened to me there. One thing I'm also happy about is they've started turning closed captions on for some of the TVs since the last time I visited. I like to watch the sports shows, but since the volume is down you don't know what they say unless CC are on. The bar was kept exceptionally clean from my perspective, and though I didn't drink, their selection of beers looked quite good. For all the good, though, I have to be honest. There's is nothing exceptional about this place. I'll be back for lunch on occasion as I have before, but I won't go out of my way for it.

My friend and I had an awesome experience here. Super fun and very casual atmosphere. Staff was courteous and very helpful with food and drink selections. Huge amount of beers on tap offerings and we loved the local Thomas Creek Red Ale. Standard bar food so don't expect anything more than that. Would definitely go back if I'm in the area.

This joint is pretty happening. I went on a Friday, and it was the perfect college scene. They have a pretty solid beer selection, and there is ample seating. The menu is extremely standard, so do not expect anything spectacular. But I will say that good beer makes food taste a whole lot better! The layout is a bit confusing and tight, so make sure you act like a seasoned vet when you find a seat. CAH is a good bar to have a drink or a bite at. Nothing out of the ordinary, just good ol' watering hole for college drunkards.

This is your typical uninspired, huge-ass menu restaurant. The menu is huge - 8 or 10 pages, and I always feel like everything on the menu comes straight from the freezer or from Cisco. That said, it doesn't taste too bad, but it's not local or ingenious or anything. It's just food. The cheesy fries are tasty, but how could they not be. I had a salad after that, and the portion was HUGE. I could not finish it all, and I sure tried. This place is good for large groups, although our group was three minutes late and they gave away our 12-person table. There's something for everyone, but it's the classic 'please everyone but makes no one blissfully happy.'

I had been here before last year, it was crowded and average. Attempted to give it another try this past Saturday around 2pm. We were a party of four plus one small child. When we were greeted by the hostes, she told us there were no tables available on the ground floor, although i could see at least two booths open. She advised that we could try upstairs. Like she didnt know if there were any open tables up there. Obviously she wasnt interested in serving us, so we went accross the street to the Gastro place and had a fantastic meal with great service. Skip the ale house. Its not worth it. The food is average and the service sucks. With so many other options within a two minute walk, you would think they would step up their game. Im not going back. Apparently the place makes so much money that they dont need mine.

Ninety nine plasma TVs on the wall, ninety nine plasma TVs,,,,,take one down, pass it around... You get the idea. Odds are this big, flashy sports bar will be jam packed with crowds this spring. Prepare to wait a while for one of the prime tables on the edge of the upper deck. Main Street never looked so good from up there, and with all of those TVs and countless brew options, this place is destined for success. Regardless of how the food tastes.

The fish tacos are surprisingly good! There is a nice vibe when sitting outside. Will definitely go again. The food isn't amazing, but definitely worth a trip. The onion straws are a large appetizer, easy to share with a bunch of people!

If you are looking to enjoy a beer on a rooftop patio on a gorgeous day this place is the best in Greenville. Selection of draft beer is rivaled only by Barleys in Greenville. Food leaves something to be desired, above average bar food. Great place to watch a game but get there early.

service was great. Pab (I assume short for Pablo) was awesome serving our table of 15. Got all of our drinks right, food arrived promptly, and we never really needed to wave him down for more drinks/food. AMAZING service. Though I can't say the same for the group of hostess hanging at the front not doing much. The food was mediocre at best, but with so many tv's, I am tempted to come back soon to catch the games. I know that upstairs is much better, but it was so crowded that we ended up downstairs which was fine.

So my experience here was not so great even though I had heard many good things about the place. A nice new modern sports bar with a decent beer selection. Not good enough to compete with Barleys mind you, but better than most average sports bars and I like that. We ( my aunt and a girlfriend ) decided to take a seat at the bar and have some beers and dinner. Bar stools were comfy enough and the bartenders were pleasant. Taps had a nice craft selection along with your usual choices and I optdd for a 1554 which was ice cold ( too cold for me personally but good for most ) The place doesnt really cater to a beer snob crowd, which isnt surprising but none the less i was surprised to see all beers from strong ales to belgians served in your run of the mill bud light embossed shaker pint. We started with some apps, chili cheese fries and fried pickles, you know, bar food. Both of which were good for what they were. The main problem of the night was experienced by mu aunt who ordered the pub burger medium and recieved it well well wellll done so she decided to send it back and waited for a new one. Once she got the second attempt the burger was cooked perfect BUT the bun was about as hard as the table top and so she decided to tell the manager since it was getting a little ridiculous. Ending up with the brisket sandwich which was tender but tasted as if it were dunked in a tub of liquid smoke. Not very pleasant. Me and my girls burgers were prepared well but nothing memerable in the least. One other thing that i always dislike is when a place has a " super fire inferno habanero spicy hellfire whatever burger " that touts it as really spicy and I end up with what tastes like bbq sauce with some cayenne in it, always dissapointing for me. Check the place out if you want some nice cold beers and want to watch sports on one of the 47 big screens slapped all over the place. If I go back I'm gonna be there for some $2 yuenglings and to veg out for a bit. Cheers.

We have come here many times always hoping it will be better than it is. The food and service are both quite lacking. We find ourselves coming here for the atmosphere aka the retractable roof and the beer selections aka Dopplebock by Thomas Creek and other good choices. The best thing on the menu was the ice cream sandwich cookie that they took off. Every time we come the server is not knowledgeable about what they're serving, how it's supposed to be served and inevitably that leads to a bad meal. For example one of the burgers gets fried onions. The burgers were brought out without them, took forever to get them, now have cold burgers awaiting proper garnish. Had to ask multiple times to get ranch dressing which is what was ordered for the salad. The location, the roof top and the number of TV's to watch sports on brought us back a few times more than we would have usually come. Now I tell people to eat somewhere else and go there for the game and beer and to order 2 rounds when they sit down so as not to go dry in between drinks. What does it take to make downtown Greenville understand how imperative good service is. And without good food to take up any slack it just isn't worth it. If it were not for all the sport watching options I think they would be out of business by now.

Caveat...I did not eat here. However I decided while on a biz trip I would get my drink on with a few friends. This can be summed up in three points.... The Good: rooftop bar...this is a pretty unique feature that is quite remarkable. The weather was nice so the roof was open. The beer selection is large, and there were TONS of TVs everywhere so watching the NBA Finals was of no issue. The Bad: way way way too crowded and loud. I have been to other pubs around Greenville and this just bordered on ridiculous...for a Tuesday night no less. Given the crowd, the bartenders were pretty busy and inattentive. The Ugly: while did not eat anything, my friend tried to order a salad. She was given what appeared to be toppings for a burger (lettuce, tomato, onion). To compensate for the shortcomings of the salad, a basket of fries was presented...ugh gee thanks! Cool concept, but as is typical with Greenville (read Barley's 10 years ago)...the new kid on the block gets jammed and suffers from growing pains. I wish there were more microbreweries downtown that would provide an alternative of local handcrafted beer selections and food/service execution, as they would be unique and well received.

Wow they had a lot of beers on tap. Lots of TVs to to watch sports games. Even though my friend got a bit too drunk (after the 49ers lost...) and was escorted out by security, everyone was friendly about it and they called a cab for us

Disappointing. Steak with no taste, watered down drink, lackluster wait staff. Only thing that saved this place from a 1 star was my wife's meal was good...not great. May go back, may not. There are just too many other good places to eat downtown to make me want to risk it again.

Arrived at 11:50 on Saturday( game day) was told it would be a 15 minute wait for a table. There were 5 in our party. After 1/2 hour i asked the hostess what was up (as a few larger parties were seated before us that came in after us. I was told" we are setting up your table now" Well my table was a 4 top and they were looking for another chair to put at the end of it. I waited another 20 minutes, A different hostess asked if we would mind being seated in the bar. Ummmm, i never said i would .By the time we ordered people who walked in after us where already leaving. I order a cajun steak sandwich. It was spicey. My daughter ordered honey bbq wings, they were hot/ spicey. Everyone else ordered bar food and thats what they got. We ordered a plate of dessert nachos. It took about 25 minutes for them to come out. They comped them. By that time i was over this place. Needless to say the total dining experience took about 2 1/2 hours - for lunch! Manager came over and talked to us, made excuses about game day and you just dont know what to expect. Comped our desserts. Just not sure that was enough for the lack of communication from the hostess stand. not sure i would return, we live in the triangle and have never tried any of the other ale houses and not sure i would!

For a sports bar, the place is definitely a winner. Two floors, large plasma TV's everywhere, a second floor roof that will slide open on warm days and front floor to ceilng windows that will slide open to the street on warm days. Great beer selection with over 100 beers. As for the food, I was worried there would be no healthy options, but there is. I had the Boom Boom Shrimp Wrap. A low cal wrap of spicy shrimp and fresh vegetables. Excellent! Definitely not a highend dinner place, but for a kick backed Saturday afternoon, the place is recommended.

Great place to watch any sports, as you can't sit anywhere and not see multiple TV's. Food is good, not great, but good...hey, it's a bar at heart, but is still a great place to bring the kids and watch some football. I definitely recommend trying it, especially on a nice day when you can sit upstairs in the open air seating area. Really cool.

Great atmosphere, good music. Nice restaurant, but my burger was so greasy that the kaiser bun was soaked. My son did not like his grilled cheese which is unusual, and the sweet tea was the worse that I have had at a restaurant. If your out with friends on a weekend, then I would suggest heading straight to the bar. BTW the dessert nachos are huge!

If you like good food (especially burgers) and good beer (how about 30 or so beers on tap?) then you'll love this place. I've been to Greenville twice on business and have been to the Ale House about 12 times during those trips. Usaully we wound up going just for drinks since downtown Greenville has a suprising amount of good restaurants. But the food there is still really good. I really enjoyed their burgers and, shockingly, their fish tacos as well. If you're looking for a good place to hang out and have some cheap (and good) beer on a Monday or Tuesday night, this is by far the place. I would avoid it on Fridays and Saturdays, though. Unless you like being nubs-to-bu**s with a bunch of people, then you might find it too crowded on the weekends.

    (5)
  • M C.

The menu has a large selection, but food is very average; plus, I was overcharged on my visit. Place is extremely noisy along with a backdrop of added noise from the television and music and drunk patrons. Will not return since I don't like to 'yell' to be heard during a lunch or dinner conversation and the food is far from special. A good watering hole for a young crowd, but wouldn't recommend for a meal.

Enjoy the ambiance and energy of this new resturant. Can't believe they assinged one bartender to serve an area this size including the waiter service area. We waited 10 minutes to order a beverage then 15 minutes to order a meal. Unreal.
