Giving this place two stars is being nice. The service is slow and the food is about as bland and boring as I've experienced. I have only eaten here twice, but twice was more than enough considering the food was about as void of flavor as possible The only redeeming quality this place has is that it has a great porch atmosphere to go hang out with your friends on a nice day. This also has a great bar to go to at night.

I've wanted to try lunch at the Salty Nut Cafe since seeing their lunch specials show up as an ad in the Free Times a couple weeks/months back, but some of the reviews here had me a little hesitant. I wanted to go on a Thursday for JD's Chicken Gravy Melt (I think that's what it was called...), so today I decided to pull the trigger and got a few of the fellas from work to join me. Maybe it was my hesitation that had me going in with low expectations, or maybe it was the food on its own merit, but we all had a pleasant experience. Yes, there was a small bit of a wait, but there were 5 of us, 3 of which had the special and 1 who had a burger to order. It really wasn't *that* bad, as we were in and out in an hour, which is about average for a group of us. And, man, I was surprised at how big my entree was! That was one big chicken breast (No wonder there was a wait!) and it was sandwiched between *two* slices of Texas toast, not one as the description implied. There was plenty of gravy to go around, too, which made me a happy feller... ;c) For this, a side *and* a drink, we thought it was a pretty good deal for $6.99. Actually, all 3 of us got the beer battered onion rings as our side, so it was an extra dollar (same if you choose mozzarella sticks). But still, a fair price. The entree was great, maybe needing just a bit more salt & pepper during the preparation of the gravy. It may not look like much in the picture, but I was happy with it. The onion rings were ok, and small in portion (especially considering they came with an additional cost). They were also cool when we got them, which was the only complaint about the meal I heard from anyone, but they were probably pulled before our meals were completely ready. Not an issue big enough to dock them any points. The angle of approach in getting in and out might be tricky for some. I didn't have any problems, but we watched the Budweiser truck drop their driveshaft trying to get out... What made getting out tricky was the proximity to a traffic light.

We just stopped in here for a pitcher of beer to check it out, and it seemed OK. We didn't have any entrees, so I don't know about the food, but we did have the nachos, which were so-so, nothing really special, but good for munching on while you are having some beers. They have all you can eat peanuts and you can throw the shells on the ground, which I think is satisfying in a caveman kind of way.

Biggest deck in 5 Points. Peanuts everywhere. Cheap happy hour specials. Excellent burgers and raw fries. Clientele range from frat kids to grad students to professionals getting off work. Service is friendly, but sandwiches and burgers take some time - so drink up while you wait. If you need quick drink service, head to the bar. If you're looking for a leisurely pace, get a waitress. The deck is perfect in warmer months. Couple things to keep in mind: if you park under the deck, your car will be covered in peanut shells. The train tracks run past it, which brings a bit of noise.

Hope you like nuts... The Salty Nut is the epitome of casual. The floor is covered in peanut shells, and the majority of the clientele is college-aged. Despite the lack of class, the place is relatively clean, and offers a decent vegetarian selection, including a veggie burger and wrap. I recommend a side of spicy raw fries (somewhere in between fries and chips) with vinegar. This would be a great place for a group, though the beer is not quite as cold as it should be. Free parking!

I am a regular customer at salty nut but my experience last night may have been my last. One of the servers (red shirt, black and gold hoop earrings, and short curly hair pulled back in bun) cut me in the line for the bathroom after I had been waiting patiently for a VERY long time. I am the nice,quiet type but a friend pointed out that I had been next in line. The server then started talking trash to me, and I have never been talked to so rudely in my life! Especially by a server!! Everyone around me who heard her was completely shocked. I was very upset because this was a bar I went to all the time and my night was ruined. I informed the manager (I think Roger) and hopefully something will be done. If she continues to act that way they will lose all their normal customers.

You can sit outside with a drink on a warm night. That's enough for me. I wouldn't sit inside when the Tavern on the Green is just down the road.

A great place to sit outside in the sunshine with a pitcher of beer, a bucket of peanuts & a big greasy bacon cheeseburger. The food isn't really all that great, & it isn't as cheap as it should be, but this is the edge of a bar district in a college town. This is what you're gonna get.

My hopes were higher, but the salty nut is solidly three star material. All you can eat peanuts didn't make up for the meager portion of fries that came with my burger. The hand formed burger itself was served well done and dried out... easily the most disappointing part, especially since I wasn't asked for my temperature preference. It was nice to sit out on the deck but the waitresses took it a little too far with their "I'd rater be somewhere else" attitude.

Let's be honest: who doesn't love Salty Nut? Not only does the Nut have the best outdoor seating in the Five Points area, they also have a great bar menu, cheap drinks, and you're always guaranteed a great time. This is a perfect college bar with a lot more to offer than most dives. Sometimes service can be slow but that's okay because the pitchers are cheap and plentiful. A great local spot that is timeless and delicious.

Went last Saturday for lunch and was really disappointed with everything but the service. The chicken was just in an inch of grease and the fries were the grossest things I've ever eaten. They were so soggy and tasted like they were half cooked. I don't see how you can mess up French fries. The rest of the afternoon my girlfriend and I both dealt with food poisoning. Will never return. This place should just stay as a drinks only bar.

A five points institution. You can burn this place but not kill it! The food has always been good and cheap. The beer is cold and cheap. It's a college place. Not a bad thing, and having said cheap that makes since. Service is generally good. Love the roasted peanuts! They revamped the menu when the rebuilt. My favs was changed (veggie burger is different) and no more open faced chicken salad sandwich which was awesome, but they added new great menu items.

Went back today for lunch again. I ordered the nachos sans chili and the mozzarella sticks. The mozz sticks came out piping hot and great, I couldn't eat them fast enough and after 15 minutes the cheese was hard and cold. The marinara dipping sauce is really good. The nachos were a waste of my money. They used shredded, processed cheese that wasn't even melted! I also only had a few scraggly pieces of it. So basically I just had chips with lettuce, tomatoes and jalapenos. I asked for some salsa but I didn't enjoy that either. It was like a chip salad or something. No bueno!!

This is one of my absolute favorite warm weather hangout spots in Columbia. I have spent many a beautiful spring day out on the deck. Everything is well priced. The Dr. Woo is my favorite sandwich, and always with a side of cheese tots. The cheese tots are amazing. Also, they make the best long island ice tea in town.

This is a great place to go and hang out with your friends. Great porch for drinking beer and listening to music. The peanuts are awesome. Cheese tots as an appetizer are huge. More than enough for your table!

I ordered the nachos and my friend ordered a club sandwich. We were both very disappointed by the sloppy presentation and awful quality. Truly awful food, and we witnessed the owner making racially charged remarks towards an employee. Despicable, we will never return. It's a shame, because the patio is very nice and it's a great location.

Had to ask for the menus twice. Eventually ended up having to get the menus myself, the pitchers of water myself, and had to go ask for a waitress since the waitress at our section kept ignoring us.

Fantastic food. Some of the best fried okra I've ever had. If you go, ask for Hannah. She's honestly the best waitress me and my wife have ever had. She made a great suggestion on the chicken wrap and my wife loved it. She even went out of her way to care for my wife's allergies and made sure our food was okay to eat. Only complaint is that they charge for cheese on a burger. Which I find silly. 50 extra cents for a slice of cheese? Ridiculous. But other than that, it was one of the best experiences we have had in Columbia
