I'd eaten Ethiopian food in larger cities a couple times. I love the dining experience. Sharing your food and eating with your hands makes it more than just a meal. Though the other Ethiopian places I've been have a little more culturally inspired venues, Salina's is the real deal. The food is awesome, which is why you are going. We got the vegetarian sampler and the sampler with meat. All dishes were great. I thought only southerners could cook greens that were to die for, but Ethiopians can bring out flavors I'd never imagined. Please go to Salina's so it is successful Columbia!!!

What a fun food experience. Anyone who considers themselves a foodie should visit Salina. The owner, Sophi, was very nice and offered menu suggestions to us newbies. The coffee is amazing and worth the trip alone. The owner actually roasts the coffee beans in the restaurant in plain view. The flavor is so delicious unique, similar to Turkish coffee, if I had to describe it. The atmosphere is simple but the service more than makes up for it. Highly recommend.

Just tried this place last night! It was a fun place to eat, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food was delicious and unique. We got the vegetable platter and the beef cooked spicy. Both were delicious, and someone came by our table offering more veggies whenever she saw we were running low. The only complaint I had was that we had to ask for napkins, which is something quite necessary when you are eating everything with your hands! Other than that it was a great experience and I definitely plan on going back.

Lovely eating experience. The hot, spiced tea in glass cups reminded me of the novel, The Alchemist, where the exotic tea was served in crystal cups. The food was also spicey and delicious, and fun to share. Only one suggestion. Small bowls of water to wash the fingers after eating could have been a way to leave the hands feeling refreshed and clean. A lovely gracious hostess served us.

Welcome to the only Ethiopian restaurant in Columbia. I've been to several in Charlotte and California and while the aesthetics of this cafe aren't much to write home about, the flavor and service are superb! Tried the spicy red sauce (dero wot) with chicken and hard boiled egg along with the green alicha sauce which ended up being my favorite. Eating with the injera bread is messy but oh so delicious! The owner and her husband are very sweet and inviting. They will recommend good dishes to share if you are stumped. Also try the complimentary hot tea at the end of your meal. Cinnamon and cloves make for a perfect infusion of flavors to end your meal. Make sure you ask them for the Ethio menu since the one on the table only lists the gyros and sandwiches.

We drove 60 miles to go to the closest Ethiopian restaurant, Salina Cafe, and were not disappointed. The atmosphere is informal and a bit spare (they had no diet drinks, one of the dishes on the menu was not available, and some of the fluorescent lights were fading or had cracked fixtures), but this just reinforced the authentic African feeling and everything was still clean and comfortable. The food was quite good, though a bit less spicy than some other Ethiopian restaurants we've been to, doubtless out of deference to American taste. This was fine, as the subtle flavors of Ethiopian foods don't need to be spicy hot to be enjoyable. We ordered four dishes and they were served family style on a large platter covered with injera bread. The server thoughtfully placed dabs of each dish in several locations around the platter so that everything was in easy reach of each person. We did have to ask for extra injera since none was served on the side and it was hard to eat the ones in the serving platter until the food was partly consumed. I was surprised that the hostess prepared our coffee right on the spot, from roasting the beans right in the dining room to grinding them and making the coffee Ethiopian style. It takes some extra time but was worth the wait. We had a teen and two small children with us. While they were noisy at times, the atmosphere was casual enough to be kid-friendly so we wouldn't mind taking them again--but we would probably do what we did today and take the kids to MacDonald's first! This restaurant is definitely worth a try if you live in the Columbia or CSRA area and like Ethiopian food or are looking for something delicious and out of the ordinary. Skip the Chinese or steak for once and try a new treat! Note: The restaurant IS open on Saturday (at least it was today), despite the hours posted here on Yelp.

This place is awesome! Good Ethiopian food is practically non existent in Columbia. This place is the exception! I have drove to Charlotte to eat Ethiopian food and this place is way better. They have a more American type menu but I can't stop ordering off their authentic menu. Please go and try for yourself to help keep them open so I can continue to go.

The first time I ever had Ethiopian food, I thought it was a cuisine tailor-made for me. Piles of seasoned and sauced meat that you backhoe into your mouth with bread? Yes, please. It was a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, that was in DC. While I appreciate the effort-- Columbia needs food diversity!-- I can't recommend this place in good conscience based on what I was served (and could not finish despite being still very hungry). But for the sake of the kind people working there, I hope their effort leads to improvement, and maybe you'll try it and find out I'm completely wrong.

Sophie, the part owner, the lovely hostess/waitress at Salina, has left Salina café with her delicious Ethiopian food, smile and great customer service. If you come to enjoy the service and friendship of Sophie, and her special Ethiopian cuisine, visit facebook.com/SophieEthio… or email at misrakthomas.13@gmail.com . She is starting Ethiopian food service at 2431 Main street on Sundays after church for Lunch and dinner in July 2015. She misses and can't wait to hear from all her lovely customers that she couldn't reach.

My husband and I frequented this cafe for several months, enjoying the lovely Ethiopian cuisine. We had had nothing but wonderful experiences until our last visit, which was about 4 weeks ago. The service was terrible - it took 30 mn just to get some water, the orders were not brought out correctly, there were no lentils and little variety for the veggie dishes, and the "Ethiopian" tea was just regular tea -- nothing like what we had experienced before. I had heard that the staff had changed. Unfortunately we will not go back.

I've had lunch here a few times. The food is delicious (try the lamb gyro if you're not adventurous enough for Ethiopian specialties) and the service is wonderful. I usually carry out, but the few times I've stayed inside to eat I really felt catered to. All of the staff I've encountered have been really friendly and were helpful with explaining menu items the time I brought a friend. Atmosphere definitely needs some work though - hopefully they'll make enough money on Main Street to afford some updates.

Food was decent, ambiance was awful, service was awful awful. If you have the patience go to Charlotte, North Carolina or order to go. check out Meskerem in Charlotte.

Dining with my large family, four generations, is always an adventure and, as expected, does not always go smoothly. Surprisingly.. though this is a small restaurant, they accommodated us very well. The staff was friendly, the food arrived in a timely manner and was quite good. We will be visiting again.

The menu and service was great. The veggie platter was delightful and plenty for two. The hot chai tea was also very tasty. I'm looking forward to going back and trying another dish. Entrees are very reasonably priced and we felt like we had a great date night!

Place is nothing special but the food is good. They serve American food as well and I had a Gyro with Fries. The other patrons near me seemed to enjoy their ethiopian food as well. Good stop right on Main

Just had lunch here today. The atmosphere is no-frills and I didn't know what to expect. Turns out it was great! I could eat the Key Wot all day every day. The service was friendly and attentive. Next time I'll definitely try some coffee.

Columbia's first Ethiopian restaurant, as far as I know. Been twice now. The food is quite tasty, the service is friendly but spotty. They would benefit from people bugging them to add some sort of combo platter to the menu. But if you bring a group of four, you can order everything on the menu for under 50 bucks and everyone should leave happy. Bear with them, and let's all hope they last long enough to get professional.

I had a take out meal from their booth at the Columbia International Festival. It was delicious. I Love the Crepe sponge like bread that has so much flavor. From some investigating I found that the flavor is sourdough. Yum! I can not wait to go to their restaurant.
