The service SUCKS, to put it bluntly. It's slow and the servers are incompetent. It's usually quick... Which is a perk.... I guess. But I do enjoy their chicken and cheese quesadillas

Haven't eaten here 100 times but after tonight never again!!!! Have seen slack before but we literally waited 3 hours to get a to go order!! They didn't know a single thing about drinks, when I got it it was terrible, & even the beer was bad. Took that long for just the food, & these ppl had no clue what they were doing. Asked for an enchiladas, got a quesadilla instead. I mean, basic shit. Got charged twice what shoulda been. You let me down, monterreys.

Absolutely horrendous service! My husband and I waited for ever to even see a waiter, who was rude when he came. The food was tasteless, and the beer was very warm and extremely flat. We won't be back.

A couple of friends traveling to Columbia, SC (different airlines) arrived here for the night and met up with another friend, who was local to the area and we decIded to go to dinner at Monterey Mexican restaurant. Navigating the roads after winter storm PAX was a challenge, but we made it here decently, especially when there was ice still on the side of the roads, but still drivable. Downtown Columbia was a ghost town, even on a Thursday night before 7pm, but I'm assuming that it was due to the winter blast that came through earlier in the week. And so, we arrived here around 6:45pm and the place was busy. Monterrey's Mexican restaurant is located in West Columbia, SC on Leopard Street. We were lucky that we found parking, just as someone was leaving, so that was perfect timing! There was a couple people ahead of us, but there was an empty corner table near the left side of the restaurant, so we just sat ourselves and not wait for the hostess to sit us. Kind of bold, but the local friend of ours knew what she was doing, I think. The ambiance of the restaurant was fast paced and somewhat loud, since the waiters were so busy. I was famished from a day of travel, so I ordered the carne asada plate, along with a corona and water. I mooched off a friend's chip and salsa, so that was cool. The prices here are typical. $12 for the carne asada plate and $6 for a beer. I ended up paying for myself and my local SC friend, just because it was nice to finally meet her in person. She took us around town that night and the next morning, before we all had to drive to our final destination for the weekend in Myrtle Beach, SC. The restaurant was reasonably clean and the service was decent to okay. Nothing really to say otherwise, since they were busy trying to get everyone's orders right and fast as they could. The carne asada was decently good, although I expected more meat. The meat that I did have was tender and went pretty well with the alcohol I drank. Overall, the experience was typical and probably won't be here again, if if was my choice to pick. While it wasn't a bad choice, I wouldn't have picked Mexican, but my friends seem to enjoy it. It was great company and that part I did enjoy. They accept credit cards, so that is great, as well as cash. Support local! B-

Food was ok but I have had better. Had the lengua tacos and the tongue tastes like it was freezer burnt. Also had guacamole salad and the guacamole was runny. Just not a good experience. Pancho's on Forest Dr. is much better!

My least favorite Mexican restaurant. Period. If it weren't for friends liking the location next to Flying Saucer and other bars in the area, I would never eat here at all. Yes, they make "fresh" chips every morning, but they don't keep them warm at all, so you get cold chips. Tostitos makes better chips than this place. The salsa is very bland unless you get a side of cilantro to add to it. Chicken is consistently dry and fajitas leave a lot to be desired. The only plus for this place is the cheap beer. So we've gotten into the habit of eating before we meet up with our friends here, and then just ordering drinks.

I was in Columbia at a client site the other day and my co-worker and I decided to stop into Monterrey for a quick bite to eat. When we arrived, we waited and waited for a host to seat us. Finally, we got a table and placed our orders. The food came out fairly quickly, but unfortunately they brought the wrong order to me. Thankfully it did not take them long to get my correct order out to me. The food was ok, but nothing to write home about. I would not go out of my way to eat here, but if you are in the neighborhood, its an ok place to go.

Terrible from the service to the dinner. I don't know where to begin. When we got inside no one greeted us, we sat on a booth for 4 minutes before they recognized us then said "two" and started walking to a booth and completely left us. Waited 5 minutes to get chips and another 5 for drinks. Food came out quick but the grilled chicken taco salad wasn't anywhere near good. Finished what we wanted and waited 25 minutes and then the table behind us said to a man who I'm guessing is a manager "we've been waiting for like 30 minutes finished with our food and he hasn't even came back over". Our drinks were empty for the duration of the meal and we paid 34.10 for a terrible experience and will NOT be returning.

Traveling through back to Asheville and stopped to eat at mojitos cafe but they were closed for remodeling. So we walked around the corner to Monterey for standard Mexican fare. Had the Monterey chix and the Monterey burrito. Both were better than expected since the chicken was still juicy and well cooked. Salsa with chip was kinda boring. Overall we weren't disappointed. Btw the waiter is extra chatty

This place is YUMDOGGIES. We stayed at the Hilton across the street and ate at Monterrey twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. The lunch fare, quesadillas, guacamole, and nachos, was delicious; I especially recommend the spinach quesadilla, which had real fresh spinach. The salsa's pretty zesty/ spicy, too. What really stands out, though, is the soup: we both picked up head colds from traveling, and Monterrey's chicken tortilla soup and regular chicken soup, both of which we sampled, were, as my partner said, "medicinal." Also really tasty.

Super fast service. This is certainly a place you can get in and out of in your lunch hour with no problems. I have had better Mexican food elsewhere, but it is honestly pretty much the same as everywhere else. 4 Stars.

I've been many times, including yesterday for lunch, and it's always fine. Not the best, definitely not the worst. The chips and salsa are fine, the chimichanga was fine, the service was fine. It's close to my office so we'll definitely be back.

Sometimes you just want mediocre Mexican food. I was in Columbia for work and took to Yelp as to where I could find a margarita close to my hotel and thus I wound up at Monterrey Mexican Restaurant. It's downtown Columbia, which is surprisingly fun to walk around. I was literally the only patron at 6:00 and at at the bar a good 5 minutes before an employee appeared. It gave me time to look around and notice that this place was pretty dirty. I would have left except for the fact I saw $5 jumbo margaritas on their happy hour menu. An employee emerged and I ordered my jumbo frozen margarita of bliss. You can't mess those up! The chips and salsa were standard. My make your own combo meal of a chile relleno, enchilada, and beans arrived no joke within 3 minutes of ordering. That's speedy service, but it also wasn't that fresh obviously. On a positive note, the bartender was actually a joy to talk to about the Gamecocks' football schedule (Go Dawgs!). Lucky for him, by the time I left a few other patrons had arrived. Monterrey wasn't the worst Mexican food I've had by any means, but it was definitely mediocre food at best. The one saving grace was my el cheapo margarita. Would I go back? Probably not. Did it hit the spot for the evening? Ole!

Meh...If you want Mexican-flavored cardboard, this is the place for you! The prices were pretty good, the service was not (although to be fair, they were slammed with a very big group. They have a no-guns allowed sign but I didn't see any armed guards so you are taking a risk there. Only the water was authentic. The Carne Asada was airplane-quality and their tacos were what one would expect-from a fast food restaurant. Columbia is not good city for Mexican food and I was still disappointed.

Great service and the caso dip is crazy tasty! Get the beef and chicken fajitas! The house Margarita and 24oz Dos equis are delicious and great deal on happy hour

Where to start. My husband and I were in Columbia for a concert at Music Farm. When we arrived to the restaurant, we were met by a dumbfounded hostess. She looked at us like we'd just barged into her living room. I offered up "table for two, please" since she didn't seem to know what we wanted. Once we were seated, we sat and sat. There was a constant steam of wait staff who walked by, but no one stopped. We actually pulled out our phones and said "ok, we'll give them five more minutes, then we're out." Finally, someone came over and took our drink order. A different server brought our drinks out and apologized for the wait. They were busy, so we were forgiving. My husband ordered the tacos de carbone and I ordered steak fajitas. The food came out relatively quickly, and it was fresh and delicious. We were singing their praises at this point. Then things started to fall apart. We ordered more drinks, and the server took literally 20 minutes to get them out. I'm talking about one beer and one margarita. She didn't apologize, she just brought them and left. Once we saw her again - I requested our check. She took at least another 20 minutes to bring us a printed piece of paper. Unfortunately, we had to pay with our card. We reluctantly handed it over to her - at this point, our dirty plates had been sitting in front of us for over a half hour, and our drinks were empty. She took YET ANOTHER 20 minutes to bring us our card back. We saw her walking back and forth from the bar to the back, but she wasn't taking or bringing anything out each time she'd go back and forth. No clue what she was doing. My husband was really upset at this point. Mainly because he felt like he could have had another beer in the time we sat waiting on her to do something that could have taken five minutes. By the time she brought our card, he was so angry he marked through the tip line and stormed out. He never does that. All in all, we spent more time waiting on someone to take our order, bring our drinks, bring our check, then bring back our card than we did actually eating and drinking.

This place has wonderful food, although their salsa could use a bit more tang. However, when I come to your restaurant and you only interact with me to take my order and then bring my food drinks, you are going to leave a nasty taste in my mouth. I don't like being ignored in a restaurant. If you can't be bothered to give proper customer service in an eating establishment, why bother running one, period? Highly disappointed.

Probably the worst Mexican I have ever had. Tasted like everything was prepared from either a can or a box. I ordered huevos rancheros and my girlfriend has the lunch chicken fajitas. The fajitas were okay at best. Salsa had no flavor. My enchiladas were drenched in sauce and the beef tips had absolutely no flavor like they were out of a can! Severely disappointed because it smelled so good on the outside. Told the waiter my food was making me sick he didn't say anything just walked away. Will not return do not eat here!

The staff is slow, the food is sub par and there is a 100% chance your stomach will hurt within an hour of eating.

Supposed to open at 11:00. It's ten after, lights are on but doors are locked and they aren't answering.

To whom it may concern: A friend and I visited the restaurant today around 1:00pm, after receiving several recommendations from locals. When we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly greeter and immediately given seating. After reviewing the menu, we finally decided what we were going to order, my friend, who is vegan, ordered rice & beans and a bowl of guacamole, as it is a favorite. I ordered the Camaron a la Diabla, as I was in the mood for seafood. The guacamole came out first, my friend tasted it, said it did not taste fresh, asked me to taste it, and I confirmed. We then informed our server that we did not care for the guacamole, and was told that we would still be charged for it even if we do not want it because a manager was unavailable to void the order. My friend and I found that to be strange, as we are frequent restaurant patrons, and have never heard this before. We let that pass and our orders finally arrived. I am a big fan of vegetables, so I tasted those first and was extremely disappointed in the lack of flavor, the stale/old taste of the vegetables, and the fact that they were very dry. At this point, we were regretting that we decided to patronage this restaurant. We knew that we would not be compensated for our dislike of the quality of food, as we were previously told so by the server, so we paid our $22.80, plus a mediocre tip (due to experience) and left. I am not sure if there is anything that can be done to gain our service again, but if there is something you would like to say, please respond to me as soon as possible. Regards, Corey (Extremely dissatisfied customer)

The service was horrible and the food was just as bad as the service. Avoid at all cost. Over priced Mexican food, that was so bad we all stopped eating it. Don't go. You'll spend less at taco bell and the food tastes 100 times better and you won't wait 45 mins for your food.

Great food. I had the lunch special chimichanga. Was nice and cheap, but delicious. The beef tips were tender, and not dry and leathery like they can be if not cooked well. All the vegetables were very fresh...I love some good Mexican food, and this lived up to my standards.

I ate here a handful of times out of convenience but I'll never eat here again. The food was never particularly great, the chips always nearing stale (and probably recycled) and the salsa is kind of decent. The last time I was here I got a plate with a few items. One of the items was a tamale. I've never seen anything like it served to someone. It looked like it had sat on the sidewalk in the sun for a few days. It looked like it was from the surface of Mars. Maybe it was freeze dried? It was the hardest and most dry food item I've ever seen. I managed to puncture the surface and it split in half and crumbled. I pushed it aside and ate my pile of runny, melted cheese and enchilada sauce from a can. My friend however had the courage to send his back. The bartender argued and was offended that anything was being sent back, and refused to take it back at first. I'm not sure if it was just a language barrier, but he seemed rather angry that something was sent back. My friend received another goopy enchilada that I'm betting had some "special" treatment. I'll never go back and I'd not recommend anyone to eat here.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
