One of the things I look forward to in the summer-- Garden Grill at McCutchen house on campus is so great! For $7 you have a choice of a burger, sandwich, wrap or salad with a side and a drink. It is a lot of food for price and it tastes amazing. Highly recommend anything with the portobello mushroom. When not too hot (temps in 100s), the grill is set-up in the courtyard overlooking the horseshoe. If moved inside, guests are still invited to eat outside if the desire. They even provide mats for those wanting to have a picnic on the historic horseshoe grounds. This is a "must do" in Columbia during the summer!

If you are looking for a fancy pants lunch on the historic Horseshoe then this is your spot. The Garden Grill is open during the summer and the buffet is open in the fall and spring. The buffet includes a drink, soup, salad, bread, hot line and desserts. I haven't experienced the Garden Grill (a fixed menu that you can order from) but the buffet is pretty legit. There is a wide variety of menu items which makes the meal seem a bit disjointed at times (you could have tacos and spaghetti on the same day) but you are never lacking for options. They are famous for their tomato pie and it's well deserved. It's delicious! The only downfall for me are the desserts. Again, there are several to choose from but none seemed especially fresh or homemade. Don't let this deter you though... you may eat so much on the buffet that you don't even have room for dessert!

Two stars?! Hold your horses, please. Let me explain. This was my first time having lunch here, so I can only comment on a singular, subpar experience. The décor was elegant and the dining company was distinguished, but I found the service and food lacking. I am a big water drinker, so I'm always attuned to water service. It was negligible here; I had to ask our waiter multiple times for a refill. I'd heard great things about their buffet before I came. I was disappointed. It wasn't cohesive in the least (spaghetti/sauce, fish rolls, chicken marsala, etc), and the tomato pies, which are supposedly their specialty, were barely filled with any filling. Dessert was tasty, however. All of this being said, I would definitely come back. Perhaps they were having an off day, and I understand these are still students. I applaud their efforts and hope to have a better experience the next time. Keep on working on it, students!

This is the best place I have ever eaten in Columbia. The culinary students work their hearts out to make and serve the best food possible. You should have reservations and prepare to spend an hour or so for lunch. Parking is almost non-existant, so plan on parking a few blocks away and walking. It will be worth it. Soup and salad is served and entrees and desert are buffet style with many choices that change daily. Dress can be casual, but most people are well dressed. They have table cloths and 7 piece silverware settings, so brush up on table manners before you go. It is an excellent place to eat a non-rushed lunch in a fine historic house.

For $10, this lunch is hard to beat. Bread, salad, hot buffet, and dessert all included and the lovely Horseshoe for the backdrop. I don't think this is too well-known to those not attending or employed by USC, but spread the word, because it's definitely a great lunch spot!

This restaurant is run by management students in the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Department of the college. The tables are set for formal dining, with china for your meal and goblets for drinks. As soon as we were seated, our waiter came with drinks. We were first served bread with olive oil. Then that was followed by soup and/or salad. We were then shown where the buffet is and were greeted by 6 different stations with food at each. I had beef bourginon and brown rice, shrimp and grits, pork chop, chicken, ravioli and carrots. I passed on the collard greens and the tomato pie. Everything was very good! The dessert bar was offered next. I had a chocolate brownie with chocolate mousse, key lime pie and carrot cake. The portions were purposely small so you could try different things. There were several items that I did not try. The service was great and everyone was friendly and professional. If you're in the mood for something special during the week, check them out. It was nice, relaxed atmosphere and was a special treat! They are open for lunch Tuesday thru Friday from 11:30 to 1:30.....menu differs everyday, so you may want to check out the website to see what they have before you go. Definitely worth a trip!
