Hero Korean Steak House & Sushi is a korean bbq restaurant (and sushi place, but I would recommend NOT going here for the sushi) that I think is the best in the Columbia area. (A quick note: if you aren't familiar with korean bbq, there is more info on it at my blog). Hero is definitely better than the other two Korean restaurants that I know of in Columbia: a bit better than DJ House, and much better than O-Bok. It is one of the more personally satisfying restaurant finds for me in Columbia because it is pretty difficult in general to find a korean bbq restaurant that offers charcoal to grill with - back in my hometown of Los Angeles, even with the highest concentration of korean restaurants in the United States, it is incredibly difficult to find (only one place, the best korean bbq restaurant I've ever been to, Soot Bull Jip, offers it), and in Orange County, they have outlawed its use completely. To be honest, I really was not expecting to find a place like this over here in the South, especially in a smaller town like Columbia, but in general, I've been continually (and happily) surprised by the breadth and range of foods you can find around here =). Hero offers a lot of other Korean foods (including bibimbap and their seafood pajean, which is one of the better pajeans I've had anywhere, actually), but the standout food, which I think all meat eaters in this world should try at least once, is their charcoal korean bbq. At Hero, you can order their korean bbq two ways: where they cook it for you, and where you cook it over a charcoal grill yourself (more on this below). To order the charcoal grill option at Hero, you have to order two plates of korean bbq meats (which comes out to about $45 and provides more than enough cooked meat to feed at least 4-5 hungry people). The charcoal grill option is so much better than the option where they cook it for you (when they cook the meats for you, I think it turns out kind of greasy, less juicy, and not even close to tasting as good as the option where you cook it over a charcoal grill yourself) that I would recommend against ordering the option where they cook it for you. Just a warning if you go to the restaurant - the service here is kind of slow, so plan accordingly! For more details about the food, as well as photos of both the restaurant and some of the dishes offered here, you can visit my food blog, epicurious-eats.blogspot…

This restaurant is very authentic and the best Korean place in town. I was the only non-Korean person in there. They use charcoal bbq which makes a big difference. They only had one person serving and the place was packed. He was helpful but overworked. The meal was really great though.

One of the better Korean restaurants in Columbia,SC. The service was good and the food was good. However, they had no room for menu modifications. We wanted squid bibimbap but they only had beef so we got the spicy squid as an entree. We wanted to add kimchee to seafood patty but they didn't have any sour kimchee for it. Even with ordering straight from the menu, we enjoyed our meal. Galbi, bul gogi on the open grill, spicy squid and all the sides. Yummy.

One of my favorite places to go in Columbia. My favorite dishes are the seafood pancake, the spicy pan-fried squid, and the kimchi fried rice. The portions are always plentiful and the extra sides are always a plus.

Definitely one of the best Korean restaurants in Columbia! Try lunch box on week days for less than $10.00 I am a native Korean, food here is second to none. unlimited side dishes refills, & new menu, also I usually call in 15 mins ahead so my foods can be prepared when I arrived there. If you are new to Korean food try Bibimbob, or Bulgogi (Korean BBQ) as you can see more detailed description on their website above. FYI: They open everyday except Wednesday. Enjoy~

It was very expensive but hey, your paying for an experience! Getting to grill your own meat in a Korean restaurant isn't found in MN so when we got the chance in SC we jumped on it! The kids loved it! If only they had Soju... sigh. We ordered half the grilling menu it seemed between 2 tables of 9 people of 3 were starving teens. First I must say my in-laws kids are very picky eaters! So it's tough taking them somewhere new. They ate everything and started stealing the meat off our table! Kalbi and bulgogi and the spicy pork were the biggest hits! oh and the Seafood pancake was fantastic! We ordered one less meat plate per person at the table since you eat family style and they had such good ban chans. Everyone enjoyed it and my Brother-in-law thought it was funny we took them to a new experience in their city. :)

Called last night at 850 to see what time Hero closed. They closed at 9 but owner said as long as we got there by 9, it was fine. We got there at 858. The people were sooooo nice. We weren't rushed. Server answered all of our questions and offered recommendations. We ended up getting the short ribs and the spicy pork. Man, it was good! I'm not well versed in Korean food (this was my 2nd time trying it) but I do know what's good. The food was delicious!! The banchan was good--the cucumbers awesome!! If you looking for something different, definitely consider Hero. They offer lunch, also.

Really good Korean food! But dreadfully slow service, never go here if you have a short lunch break.

Pretty good! The food is great, but a little bit on the greasier. We did notice a little bit of MSG in our visits. A little bit more expensive than the other local Korean restaurants. Our favorites are the stir-fry squid, haemul pajeon (seafood pancake), and the BBQ. The decor is a little older, and the service is pretty slow.

It's was scrumptious! I had the pork which is marinated and you cook it at your table. I would definitely order it again and go back a million times. My friends and I went for a girls night out and we had a blast! The service was good but the food is what is the most important part and it was great!

You have to be kidding me on the portions. Two strips of LA kalbi for $20 and two rows of still-frozen pork belly for $18. I THINK NOT. You'd be run out of LA, NY, or even DC with those ridiculous overcharges. Save your money, buy some korean bbq from a nearby Korean market, and make it yourself. There's a pretty good selection of banchan, but you can buy those at the local Korean market for less too.

first time to a korean BBQ place! so fun! I loved being able to cook my food and there were lots of sides that came with the meat. nonetheless, I thought it was a little bit overpriced. but you don't leave hungry. fun place, but wouldn't go there often because of the $. recommend for those that want a different night out

So yum! Pick a meat option or two, get a wonderful spread of radish, salads, sauces, soup, kimchi, and other sides. Definitely appeals to my experimental nature. My child loves this place for its teriyaki chicken and says it is the best ever. Even in my lack of korean BBQ experience, the meat turned out heavenly everytime.

Kind of a mixed review really. If I were just to talk about their lunch boxes, this would be a 5 star... If it was about the Korean BBQ, I would place it at 3 stars. This place says it is a Japanese place and its trying to convince you of that fact with a Japanese facade... But its as Japanese as Taco Bell. The Korean food there is excellent! The lunch menu is the main winner at this place. They have ample portions with well prepared and presented food. The Korean BBQ is another story. There is a 3 item minimum at the BBQ, which you must request. Each plate is about 15$. I first experienced this style of BBQ in Japan, and I know it as Yakiniku... I have been craving it for some time and was overjoyed to find it in Columbia. The quality of the meat was rather low grade however, and does not have the variety of dipping sauces that its Japanese counterpart had. Perhaps that is just a difference on how different countries serve Korean BBQ. It was a decent meal, dont get me wrong.... But it just wasnt worth the price tag of about 100$ for 4 people. Overall this place shines as a lunch place with a ton of food for under 10$

I have lived in Korea for a few years so I know what this is supposed to taste like. I was not impressed with the way certain things tasted, such as the bean paste other things. But this is the only traditional Korean BBQ in the area so you have no choice!! Good staff but it is a bit pricey for two people. They do have Soju

I went here with some friends and while I waited for them to show up, I had the pork gyoza and a california roll. The prices were pretty high, but the gyoza were excellent and filled with clear noodles. When my friends showed up, they wanted to eat the charcoal grilled meat course (yakiniku in Japanese) and so we switched tables. There is a minimum of three orders on a grill table, so that was $45 right there. You get one plate of meat per order and Korean side dishes, plus egg soup, miso stew and salad per table. You cook the meat yourself and get a bowl of rice to go with it. The food was pretty good, and I was pretty full after the appetizers and the meat, but it set me back $30 just for me...I lived in Japan and am used to a $20 all-you-can-eat yakiniku experience. This was OK, but I won't go back for supper....I'd be happier with just the gyoza and some kimchee. The service was good and they have cold barley tea (great in the summer heat!). Overall, a good experience, but I prefer Obok to Hero.

Really good Korean food. I haven't been to the other places in town yet, but have been here a few times. If you aren't cooking on the charcoal grill, it is a little expensive, but not too bad considering the banchan. I like the Galbi, dinner portion gets banchan, lettuce to wrap, and bean paste, which really makes it a complete meal. Overall, solid food and the people are nice, albeit, like any Korean restaurant, short staffed which may take a little longer to get things. This is typical for any Korean joint though, a few people working hard to accommodate a large crowd.

Best BBQ short ribs ever!! The meat just melts in your mouth! They have just the right flavor when they grill it for you or when you grill it your self! The short ribs are good really good quality! The best value here is the lunch special galbi box (Korean BBQ short ribs) , they also have good Columbia roll, and good Korean soups! Oh and when you order drinks ask for the barley tea , it's free!

First off, I have been to dozens of Korean barbecue restaurants and this one by far has been the most overpriced, lackluster attempts at providing quality Korean BBQ! Upon arriving at the restaurant we will automatically seated in the rear of the restaurant. It was extremely cold and the only saving grace was the barbecue grill that we ordered our food to cook with. The outrageous price that was pay for an order of Korean short ribs was astronomical! $22.00 for 2 pieces of flanken rib I mean come on! The fried rice was very very bland and with the shrimp that came on my order there were a whole bunch of veins in the shrimp which was an automatic turnoff for me! The only saving grace was the vegetables that come standard with the meal! If I had to rank the best Korean or Japanese restaurants I would have to start at the top in Okinawa Japan followed by is Izziban Japanese Steakhouse in Orlando Florida this pathetic attempt at serving Korean food would not ranked nowhere near my list although it was a great sentiment dine here I would not return the only thing that carried the expense was the time with my wife. Fair warning before you get here the food is over price and not high quality!!

The ONLY place (as of writing this) in Columbia where you can grill your own meat just like in Korea. Other places will bring out an electric skillet and cook it for you but Hero does it true-to-life flaming charcoal style. Its a bit pricey (a party has to order a certain number of portions...maybe $15-20 a person?) and the meat is only of decent quality but its still pretty tasty. There's a choice of three different cuts, galbi (sweet short rib meat), bulgogi (sweet marinated beef), and samgyupsal (pork belly). I suggest getting one of each for the first timer. After cooking your meat, there are pieces of bibb lettuce and lots of add-ons so that you can make your own ssam (lettuce wraps) with the meat. Again, here you must cook your own meat but thats pretty much what makes it such an enjoyable meal. Overall, Korean bbq is a fun experience for those who have never done it and a comforting time for those missing this style of dining as they found it in Korea. I even recommend it as a date activity due to the interactive nature of the meal and the relative privacy of the tables. Other than the bbq, the menu items I've tried have been stellar. Even though this place offers sushi and Japanese fare, make no mistake, its run by Koreans and its the Korean food that really excels. Their tteok manduk guk (dumpling & rice cake stew) is out of the park good, the kimchi jjigae requisitely spicy with rich pork belly, and their jjolmyeon (spicy, vinegary, cold noodles with veggies) fairly decent as well. The service is very professional and quick, just like you'd expect from a Korean joint. My only real complaint is that there is no soju to accompany your grilled meats :)

I enjoy this place for lunch. They have large portions for a decent price, and the food is pretty good. Their galbi was a bit thinner than what I am used to, but it had great flavor. I absolutely love their seafood pancake!

Ok first off... This place looks like a total dive when you drive up and it is situated in a kind of sketchy part of town but you people should give it a chance! I ordered the marinated ribeye charcoal grill meal. The meat itself was very well seasoned and delicious . Then they bring you out a bunch of little Korean side dishes which I loved because I love a little bit of everything!! Overall a fun time, kind of like a Korean melting pot!

i've eaten at many of the best korean restaurants in new york and los angeles. charcoal grills are used at this restaurant unlike the other korean restaurants in town in which the meat is served to you already cooked and sometimes on the lukewarm side. in order to have the chargrilled bbq, you will need to order a minimum of two orders (averaging about $40). Gal bi (short rib) and pa jeon (seafood pancake) are particularly good. this is the most authentic korean bbq restaurant _in columbia_ by far. service however while friendly is terribly slow, so be prepared for a tasty albeit long meal!

We decided to try Hero out because we heard that we would be able to grill our own meats. The interior was nicely decorated but the seats were wide and too close together so it was hard to pull the interior chairs out to get seated. We ordered the Bulgolgi, Galbi, and Pork Belly. The Bulgolgi and Galbi were so delicious and wonderfully marinated/seasoned. Loved the fact that we got to cook them to our liking because the Galbi came out perfectly tender. The Pork Belly was a little bland but they have sauces that you can add to customize the flavor. Our meal also came with miso soup, egg soup, salad, and other various side dishes. The service was friendly but the waitress forgot to give us utensils so we had to go to the front to ask for them ourselves. She also did not refill our empty drinks. They did, however, change out our grill mid-way through the meal so that we could cook the remaining meat on a fresh grill since the first one was getting very charred. The food was great and only cost us about $65 +tip.

The food is excellent. I've had the bibimbap, dolsot bibimbap, kalbi, and bulgogi. They are pretty tasty ... the latter two cooked on charcoal. I've had the tempura udon, on a prior visit, it was okay. The paper on the windows could stand to be replaced. It made the out of town guests nervous about the place until the food came out. One thing I didn't like was the hotdog/egg that came out with the little appetizer plates. That reminded me of breakfast in the PI...not a Korean restaurant.

If you believe that Korean food is all about the Bulgogi and cooking meat at your table then this is your spot. They are the only game in town with table grills. I'm not one of those people. This place is a dirty mess. The chairs are cloth and have never been cleaned. Every one is stained to the point of being rather disgusting. The tables have all seen better days. The painted-white wood screens used to create partitions in the room are arranged haphazardly giving the place an unorganized feel. The patrons tend to be non-Koreans. The Korean population in town seems to be going to the shops on Decker around the corner. I tend to order soon-do-boo, a spicy tofu stew with some seafood and an egg. It's served in a super heated bowl that keeps the soup boiling and cooks the raw egg dropped in at your table. This is consistent with the Korean value placed on freshness. Here at Hero the bowl as hot, but nowhere near hot enough to keep the soup boiling - I was a little put off by the egg not cooking as well as I am used to. Not getting a refill on my hot tea did not help the experience. The side dishes served were alright, serving six for two people. When I want Korean food, I'll be choosing somewhere on Decker instead but I wouldn't blame you for going here if you want the Bulgogi.

Generous portions with tasty side dishes. The meat was very good quality and tasted superb. I also had bi-bim-bap and it was very good with plenty of korean vegetables. Awesome place!

This was recommended highly by a friend and to be honest, otherwise I would have never stopped in. From the outside it's hard to tell it's even open. Wouldn't say the place has curb appeal. The food however is fantastic. This is going to be on regular rotation for sure. Ordered standard Korean menu items as well as two different beef dishes for the barbecue. All of it excellent. Seafood pancakes to start, excellent. Side dishes, excellent. Udon noodles, excellent. Everything else has been covered in other reviews but overall so pleasantly surprised.

We decided to stop by here after a day at the Riverbanks Zoo & I'm glad we did. When we first arrived there around 4:30pm, there was literally 1 other car and ours. It was pretty dead, but that didn't stop us from going in and try it out. In fact, I like it when there's less people on a Saturday. We decided to BBQ on our own. Meat were kinda pricey for the amount of meat we got, but it was delicious so it's okay. The owner came out as well and greeted us. The cool thing is this is a charcoal BBQ. This elderly guy will come out with a small pot of HOT charcoal and put it in the grill. Pretty awesome and our food tastes awesome! Would definitely come back. 4 stars only because the amount of meat we got for $20 each was too little.

I went here last night with my husband and had an excellent experience. They were a little busy and they warned me that they were a little behind in the kitchen but we didn't end up waiting very long for our food. I ordered the regular bibim bap (not in a dolsot) and it was delicious. My husband ordered the dae ge bul go ki and that was also delicious. We weren't seated at one of the tables with the grills so we didn't cook our own meats but they have that option available if you want to do it. They bring out a pot of hot charcoal and you can cook your meat at your table while you chat with whomever you're with. They're also very generous with portions and their selection of banchan was very tasty.

I agree with the helper, the location of Hero's is a tad bit sketchy, especially if you are coming here after dark (not bad, but not in one of the better areas of town, either). I was not totally sure what to expect, as this was my first time coming here for a friend's birthday. Once I did get inside, it looked like they had the restaurant sectioned off, and since we had about 10 people in or party, we were able to have one of the larger sections to ourselves. I never have had Korean food before, but have had Japanese so thought I would be ok getting something Japanese-wise. I do admit, the Korean dishes were on the pricey side, and believe some of the dishes could be cooked at your table (but no one in our party had cooked their dishes at our table). Was kinda disappointed in the amount of Japanese selections available, but settled on Beef Terakayi. The dish came in the traditional boxed plate (where everything had their own little section), but would have been OK with just the beef and rice (as I am not a spring roll kind of person and did not touch the salad). Even though the chopsticks give the added feel that you are eating at a true Korean / Japanese Restaurant, I wish forks were readily at the table as I am not much of a chopstick kind of person and needed to ask for a fork. Serice was good considering amount of people in our party last night.

Traveled from the Fort Gordon area to eat here and it was worth the drive. Everything we tried was great. You can BBQ your meat at the table and for a family of 5, we had to order an extra order of meat because it was so good. For those that have been to Korea and are looking for a place like those Korean Buffet places in Korea where you can BBQ at the table then this is the place for you.

It's a little costly but our experience was fair. The customer service was lacking a bit - but it was quite busy there and I can understand. Despite the cost we decided on 4 meat dishes (for the 2 of us). Short ribs, pork belly, bulgogi, spicy pork. All of which were amazing and I'm still eating the left overs 2 days later Lol the place seems sketchy but above par. Most Korean Bbq places I've been to seem sketchy though honestly. But give it a shot. The food was great and I like cooking at my own table.
