My boyfriend and I were driving through from Charleston to Charlotte and ended up at Big T's. What a treat! This was a no frill's kind of BBQ joint, but the food was outstanding, the staff was friendly, we didn't spend too much, and left very full. We got a 2 plates of chopped pork bbq, with the mild mustard sauce on top, green beans, mac & cheese, rolls, and sweet tea. All for about $12. We had nothing bad to say, in fact we didn't talk much because we were enjoying the food so much. Well done, Big T's. We will find an excuse to stop there next time we are passing through : )

Worst ribs, collards -C, pulled pork average and over sauced, not much smoke. Burgers and chicken are ok but you can that any where in cola. The Mac and cheese is flavorless. They could be much better but I think they don't care if they serve quality food to every customer. Taste for yourself and you will see.

I got the BBQ sandwich basket with collard greens and coleslaw and let me tell you... I inhaled my whole meal like there was no tomorrow! Partially because I was rushed, but also because it was delicious! They give you option to get regular, spicy or a combo of the sauces and you have to get a little bit of both. The coleslaw and collard greens complimented the sandwich well by adding in a little bit of tangy, sweet, and crunchy flavors and textures. The girl at the counter was very friendly and helpful as well. Highly recommended!

Yeah, not too bad. I was a little weary of it, because there was only 2 reviews and this place has been around for a while. Stopped in on the way to the SC high school state track meet, had to do some last minute recruiting. Doesn't look like much on the outside or the inside, kind of a dried up looking strip mall. Decor was very bland, but that's promising in my opinion. Rather they spend more time on the food than what the place looks like. Plus, they had a loooooong line, which is also another good sign. People were friendly and very patient. Got the Big T dinner, which was a heapin' helpin' of their hash, with bbq, collards, and big piece of cornbread. I expected more out of the collards, kind of bland, but everything else was great. Their que was lightly smokey, but had their great mustard sauce on it. It tasted like Sweatman's, but wasn't as thick. Same goes for their hash, but also had a nice onion hint to it. Cornbread wasn't too bad, worked well to sop up the collard "liquor" as my grandfather calls it. Banana pudding was thick and very good, but only got a small taste of it. The only problem, was that I was so full after eating the main meal, I couldn't eat the pudding. It's waiting for me in the fridge. Anyway, the meal filled me up so much, I was still full when I woke up the next morning and was fine until dinner that night. Definitely go if you have a big appetite. If not, be for warned. Oh yeah, I got all that food for around $9.50! Can't beat that!

Very disappointed. We were looking forward to good southern rib dinner but the ribs were dry. They served the ribs from a warmer. The collard greens did not right, very sweet. NO BEER! I will not eat here again. Sorry Big T.

If you're looking for authentic South Carolina BBQ, come to this place. It has a rich history and lots of family pride. Everyone is friendly, and they offer helpful suggestions on what to order. My guy ordered the pulled pork, hash and rice (the first time either of us had it, and we liked it), and mac & cheese. On the side, I couldn't resist the chicharron (fried pork rind), which was the best I've had -- so flavorful, rich, and down home. Their sweet tea was fantastic, probably the best I've had to date. Our server was extremely gracious and pleasant, and she treated us like regulars even though we clearly were out of our element (we were visiting Columbia).

Great "mustard" BBQ. Loved the hash and rice. Slaw was good, but not much of it. Cornbread tasted great. Sweet tea was just right. Lemon pound cake for dessert.....Mmmm..good!

Home cooking. Great collard and mustard greens. I just wish the sandwich bun was whole grain. Good value in a simple style. Never would have come here without Yelp location and reviews!

No frills, no fancy stuff but they have EXCELLENT BBQ and cornbread! The sides are good, too. This is a hidden gem in Columbia and is worth a visit. The sauces can be a little heavy, but they are delicious.

Used yelp to find this place and what a find! Driving through Columbia? This place is worth a stop. Fast, good quality food, friendly service, and inexpensive. Barbecue (pulled pork sandwich) was excellent -- recommend!

Was in the mood for BBQ sandwich and was not disappointed. Quick to go service and great staff. Was greeted by both the cook and the counter staff which is always appreciated! As my first time just ordered sandwich and one side of Mac and cheese. The server actually made me aware of special that would save me money by getting two sides which was certainly appreciated. Sandwich was great. Good SC BBQ with mustard sauce (though they offer an original sweet as well). Mac was good southern style. Overall no frills but good southern BBQ. For some reason the big sign was missing though and I about missed it thinking it had closed! Def recommend for good quick BBQ in SE Cola.

Big T, what? No reviews? For $5 a hungry man can leave this place fuller than a decaf decanter on a Saturday morning after a heavy night of drinking. And that, my friends, is why the Big T gets 5 stars from me. In "Times Like These", one cannot underestimate the important relationship between frugality and gourmet sensibilities. In my reviews, I hope to remind people that just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's good and, conversely, just because something is cheap doesn't mean that it's bad. But no reviews? This place has its own BBQ sauce sold in Walmarts all over the Southeast (or at least here in Soda City I see them everywhere). I find it surprising how little love the local internetters give our city's cheap family eateries. This place has been run for decades and not one review from the iGen? But we have reviews for other places here that have been open only a few months or a year if that. Maybe they feel a little uneasy about sneezeguard establishments. If so, well try the sauce for 3 bucks and see what you been missing. Big T is an iconic Columbia eatery. This is another place where I really only get one thing and that's the BBQ sandwich plate with a double helping of mac n' cheese (you get 2 sides with a sandwich order). Oh goodness, the mac n' cheese here puh=leaze. I'd order a 5 gallon drum if i could and probably the stuff would be half-eaten by the time I got home.

So, this is actually a review for the Big T down in Gadsden. The place is a real hole-in-the-wall, in fact we kinda questioned whether to go in when we got there after a day in the swamp. However, the people were super friendly that the BBQ is really great. One of those hidden finds that will stick in your memory for a long time.

Tried Big T BBQ on a recent visit to The Columbia area, specifically Fort Jackson. Was dying to try South Carolina BBQ which is much different from our Kansas City style BBQ back home. SC bbq is nothing more than chopped pork with a mustard based sauce. The atmosphere was lacking and seemed more like a truck stop cafeteria. The portions were generous, staff was friendly and the food edible. I ordered the BBQ with Rib dinner. The chopped pork was lacking flavor other than then the generous amounts of mustard sauce the staff poured on it. I would also argue the chopped pork was too finely chopped, more like it was put in a food processor and blended down to a fine mush of meat. I prefer my chopped pork chunkier with bites of meat where it can be eaten with a fork, not chopped so fine that you need a spoon. The ribs were what saves this review. They were meaty, juicy and fell off the bone. Not sure how they were cooked as there wasn't a smokey flavor or a bark on them, but they were still good. The hash and rice was good. I would give Big T another try. Would also give 3.5 stars.

I ordered takeout from here. I placed in order for fried pork chops with 2 sides. When i placed the order the cashier asked me my two sides.. i sit and wait.. five minutes later i get asked the same question from an older female working there, i reply. 5 minutes later i get asked the same question. What the hell. They should've wrote it down when I initially ordered it. I get called that the food is ready 5 minutes after that. I grab the food and noticed that no plasticware was issued so i ask for it. Then the cashier tells me that she forgot my dinner roll and pass me one along with the plastic fork and spoon to throw in my bag. Now to the food.. it was good. Real good. I enjoyed the fried pork chops and the rice with whatever they mixed it with was good as well. The sides were meh though. I don't think I'll be back.

Lived in cola for 5 years and found Big T's the last year or so that I lived there. I get the same thing, pulled pork sandwich basket with fries and slaw (sometimes Mac and cheese or banana pudding). I've found this to be the best South Carolina style pulled pork I've tried while living down there. I love it When we drive down south we make it a point to drive down I77 so we can stop in for lunch. I've had meals there at least 10 times since moving away in 2004

Awesome!!! Hash, pulled pork, collard greens, pork ribs, and corn bread. The server kept scooping mounds of juicy pork and hash (over rice). A wonderful sample of the many Southern soulful foods they offer. One star less for yesterday's ribs weren't that fresh.

I got the BBQ sandwich combo with Mac n cheese and collards. It was deee-lish! The spicy sauce isn't too hot and the sides are like homemade! The only concern I have is that there is no hand soap in the restroom, just a gigantic container of hand sanitizer at the cash register. Isn't that a DHEC violation? There's a sink with soap next to the server and I observed her washing her hands.

Good BBQ, good sides. The place was empty when I visited, but it was mid-afternoon. Staff was friendly and I enjoyed chatting with them. I'll be back when I'm on this side of town!

Best pulled pork BBQ in South Carolina that I tried. When visiting the area we were trying to find somewhere fast, but good and wanted to see what South Carolina BBQ was all about. This is an old fashioned mom and pop shop style of cooking, it looked sketchy at first but once we got in and ordered some food it turned out to be a good experience. You walk in, grab a tray and tell the employee what you want, pork, tenderloin, bbq, ribs, collards, carrots, cornbread, and different sides depending on the day. Then you pay and sit down with your tray. It was some of the best pulled pork I've ever had, was nothing like Texas pork, this was very sweet tasting and had a light brown mustard sauce which was amazing and had a zing to it. We were the only ones dining in but they had about 30 people come in and pick up to-go orders while we sat and the shop owner knew everyone who walked in the door by their first names so it's definitely a locals spot and a hidden gem. Go check it out.

It's never a good sign when someone asks you what you think of your food and you respond with "Eh... it's OK." Big T is near the end of the strip mall across the street from Wal-Mart on Garners Ferry Road. It's a basic diner place with not a lot of ambiance. They did have some local memorabilia on the wall but it was minimal. They have a main dining area with booths and a few tables and chairs and another larger room off to the right that has more tables and chairs. When my friend and I arrived there were only 2 people in front of us at the counter. You tell them what you want and they put it on a styrofoam plate (eat in) or in a styrofoam box (to go) and then you pay at the end. There is a menu on the wall above the counter but there is also a menu taped to the counter where you order. It was confusing. It was my first time there so I was looking at the menu on the wall but when the guy in front of me stepped away I see this new menu that appeared to have more "combos" or plates on it. So then I had to decide quickly what to order. I don't even know exactly what it was called... I think it was a "Small T BBQ Plate". I asked the lady behind the counter the difference between the Big T and the Small T and was told it was the price. So yeah.... thanks. I ended up with BBQ over rice with 2 sides (green beans and mac and cheese). My friend got something similar but had hash over rice. We both said we were eating in but were given a to go container anyway. When I went to pay the person at the register wasn't any more friendly. The BBQ and BBQ sauce was good. I thought it was a bit dry and there were large chunks in mine that were tough but on the whole it was OK. The dreaded OK. The green beans were just green beans and the mac and cheese was gummy. It wasn't exactly hot so that may have had something to do with it. I did taste my friends hash and it was tasty and well flavored. While we ate so many people showed up that the line was literally out the door. They must be doing something right but I don't know what it is. I don't think I'll be going back to find out either.

I'm probably not the best to judge BBQ since I'm not quite sure what good BBQ is. Some of us tried this place a few nights ago for dinner. Not 100% hard to find, but you need to know where you are looking as this place sits in a strip mall that sits back from the street - it's in the strip mall next to Kimbrall's (even though Kimbrall's is not connected to the strip mall) and across from Wal-Mart in Garner's Ferry (about 1.5 miles from I77 going towards Sumter). What really floored me when I first walked in was the collards (I believe). when you first walk in, you wouldn't think there's much seating, as there is a handful of booths in the restaurant, but they have a room off to the side with more tables, and in our case this was the better option as we had just over 10 people in our group. Food wise, the sandwich I got was just OK. My usual BBQ fare us pulled pork with the mustard base BBQ sauce.

We had a group of 30 folks and they were kind enough to give us our own room. That is the highlight.

If I'm ready to pick up BBQ and willing to drive to another county, I'm probably going the vinegar-based route, but if I'm sticking around here in the Metro, Big T's is the spot for tasty pig. It's in a strip mall across from the Walmart, but don't let that deter you. For under $7, you'll get a BBQ sandwich with spicy mustard sauce that will make you think about licking that styrofoam plate. On top of that, two sides! Macaroni and mustard greens are my favorites. I love a good deal, but I love a good deal that's 100% tasty even more. For years, I'd only had Big T's when they catered parties - the rice + hash, fried fish, banana pudding and red velvet cake are no joke - I'm really happy I tried out their restaurant. The place can be busy at lunch, so be ready to order when you get up to the counter, but definitely dine in. You don't want to miss chatting with your neighbors and enjoying checking out the wall full of pictures of lower Richland/Hopkins area sports all-stars who enjoy good eats as much as you do.

How can anyone say that "this is a good Bar-B-Que place?" and know anything about BBQ is a mystery to me. It is dried out, over cooked and lacking in flavor, but that's just the best part of this place. I've never had a hot meal here because the line is so slow, (that's why the lines appear to be long). Every time I get to the register, my meal has been sitting on my tray for a minimum of ten minutes. That's when the cashier has no change and you'll wait another five or ten minutes while they find some singles or a roll of quarters, all the while they allow people to cut in line in front of you to order a side, get ice, change their order or sell subscriptions to the "Saturday Evening Post." The staff, in general, seems annoyed that you dared to come into their place and bother them. The last thing they want is having to put up with anyone who just wants a nice BBQ dinner, served hot in a timely manner with friendly customer service.

I'm a Yankee but I've had my share of barbeque. Dry, pork ribs tough and was like jerky. My greens must have had sugar added and were horrible. My wife got the pulled pork which apparently is all they do well here. Consider yourself warned.

This place is wonderful. The sauce is delicious. My dad got a double cheeseburger that he could barely finish and it was only $4.50. Unreal prices for the large portions and it was all really good.
