We had such a great time grabbing drinks with our dogs on the patio. Live music was fabulous!!! Fried mushrooms were super good!!! Drinks and beer selection amazing. Will be back when visiting Charleston :)

I don't spend a ton of time on East Bay now that Upper King has so many fun places vying for my attention. On the rare occasion that I do find myself down that way, I almost always end up at Molly Darcy's. It's got a great authentic Irish Pub vibe and some great food. I definitely don't think this place gets enough credit. Their outdoor patio is fantastic. Molly Darcy's gets a lot of great musical talent (shout out to Catch and Release) and who doesn't like to sit on a patio, have a drink, and enjoy some fantastic tunes. I don't always go out on East Bay, but when I do.. it's to Molly Darcy's... Stay thirsty my friends.

We stopped in here because we had our dog and needed somewhere we could sit outside. We also happened to have a restaurant.com certificate, so we figured why not. The service was good, attentive but not annoying, and helpful. We asked drink opinions and tried a few Irish beverages. I got an Irish cider, Magners, which was a little less sweet than Angry Orchard. I would order that again. We shared an appetizer of the Kerry Nachos. They are generous in their toppings, but the flavor wasn't my thing. Maybe that's the way Irish nachos are, but they seemed a little bland, no kick of anything, despite having jalepenos on them. I asked the hubs his opinion, he said they were okay, and that he'd be more apt to order them again if they used good chips. Couldn't agree more, a bit of spice and a great warm crunchy chip would make this dish. We split the fish and chips as a meal. Again, not bad, I'd go here before ever trying to make them myself. The fish batter was crispy and hot, the fish itself flaky and soft. Nothing wrong with this dish, but also nothing about it that will draw me back either... It's a Irish themed environment (in case that wasn't obvious) with outdoor seating (but be warned, the space is really mostly for smokers). Overall, good service, and okay food. I almost feel a little bad for them, in a lot of places they could be great, but with all the options in Charleston, it wouldn't be my first choice (at least for food). There were some Irish people hanging out (assumption based on accents) outside though, and I could see how it would be especially appealing to them in the same way Mac's brings a little bit of home to this Chicago gal. Maybe I need to hop the pond and visit Ireland to really appreciate this place.

Love this place. Always good service and good food. Decent beer selection too! Only gripe was no HVAC in the restroom. It is too hot for that nonsense. Check it out!

Ended my first night here on my mini vaca this weekend on thursday night. The colleges definitely define the crowds you will find at the bars in the lower part of the city, I really don't mind that however because the girls are bangin(lets hope my girlfriend never sees this). However I did enjoy myself, had a slew of irish beers, which is a plus for an irish pub. Elevated dance floor area for the ladies to show what they got, and an outdoor patio to enjoy the wonderful 70's weather of spring in downtown Charleston. As far as drinking establishments go, this place is right in the middle of the pack in terms of the amount of fun and debauchery I took part in while on a wonderful weekend visit.

It was an Irish pub without boxty. I wound up getting a cheeseburger (that the waitress had to ask what toppings I wanted three times...she didn't bother to write anything down). It was okay, nothing special. I'm not a drinker, but I ordered a Coke and got Pepsi without the usual "Pepsi okay?" question. The waitress kept glaring at me for some reason...not sure what I did to annoy her. :P My boyfriend got the blacked tilapia sandwich that was seasoned well (I sampled it), and his folks got fish-n-chips and chicken pot pie, which they claimed to enjoy. Their IPA selection left something to be desired (from the boyfriend's point of view), but at least it was cool inside on one of the hottest days of the summer.

Came to Charleston for the weekend with 3 kids. This was the best restaurant we went to hands down. (Including fine dining service 3 nights in a row while we had a sitter). Our server was fabulous, the food was great, (we sat inside the bar area on a Monday night) there's a foosball table that the kids enjoyed, and the music was loud enough that I didn't feel like the kids were bothering anyone. If we lived in Charleston, I'm sure this is the restaurant we would frequent most often!

10 people on a friday night? A DJ with no one dancing. OK beer selection. No Cover. No change in decor since mertiage was there.

great location and patio was busy, i didnt eat their but the food looked good and like i said the patio was PACKED on the weekend with hungry customers. The staff was friendly and we had a great time chatting with the bartenders. good pub and worth checking out, especially if your a pub guy like myself. cheers!

Went on a Friday night but the bar wasn't very crowded. The outside patio had a lot of people listening to a singer. The patio is dog friendly which is rare for downtown. The inside bar was nicely decorated. The food was great! We had fried mushrooms and the chocolate chip Baileys sundae brownie. The dessert was one of the best I've ever had. It was definitely heavy on the Baileys (not complaining). Atmosphere didn't feel very "Irish" to me though so that's the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

  • Andie C.

Pretty decent happy hour deals. Monday through Friday from 4pm - 7pm is $1 off house liquor and domestics and $5 appetizers. The atmosphere is definitely a pub. I will go back when it cools down outside so that we can enjoy the patio (although, there were tons of smokers out there, so not sure it would be my thing). The spinach artichoke dip was so tasty, and you get quite a bit for only $5.

This place is fantastic!!!! Went here and got food one day after walking on Market St. My boyfriend got the shepherds pie and i got the Celtic burger. Both where insanely good. The shepherds pie was traditional and reminded me of my grandmother's recipe, it also came with rye bread. The Celtic burger had some Irish bacon on it and it was cooked perfectly. We now go here weekly if not every other week to get dinner. They also have a awesome special during football games, if you buy a pitcher of harp you get free Irish nachos. YES FREE NACHOS!!!

This would ordinarily be a 3-star review but exceptional service by Jordan (and the fact that she knows how to pour a proper pint of Guinness) bumped it up a star. Think typical American-Irish pub with live music outside and inexpensive drinks inside. It seemed to have a mix of tourists and locals. When we let Jordan know we were visiting and had just gotten married, she wrote out a list of must-go places for us. And then when the couple next to us asked to see the list, she wrote it out again for them too!

Great Irish pub. Sunday nights with Finbar McCarthy..,. Futbol matches on the television... Or rugby....Cold Magners cider on a hot day....friendly laid back staff. The food is standard pub fare...but does a very serviceable job when you're hungry.

Out of the way place. Food is ok. This is really a sports bar. Not family friendly. People are nice. The bar is large and well stocked. It just is not a place that makes an impression. FrankG

Nice place, has an outdoor patio with roof covering which was nice because we had our dog and it was going to rain. They had live irish music which created a nice atmosphere. I had the Guinness & onion burger with a salad and both tasted great.

This place had things I liked, things I was meh about. Should I do a compliment sandwich? Nah...I think I'll start with the bad and finish positively. I hate when I walk in some place, and am no greeted. No hostess in sight, bar tender doesn't look up...I think it's just poor form. Do you want me here? Little did I know, there was ONE SERVER for the ENTIRE RESTAURANT. I felt bad for being annoyed because I did not discover this until much later in my meal. I'm told to sit where ever we like and we're greeted by the same person to told me to do whatever the hell I wanted. I think his name was Joe, and he was super friendly. We order our drinks, and a fiscal year goes by. Joe returns carrying, oh, 500 drinks, and apologetically says, "I also have five tables inside - I am so sorry." Whoa dude, you shouldn't be sorry, your management should be ashamed of themselves! There was us, plus a table of eight plus two other tables outside, a stacked inside, no hostess for crowd control. That's just not a nice thing to do to Joe. Other major yuck: a flight is $8.50. Maybe 12oz total of beer, and it was :::Peter Griffin voice::: EIGHT FREAKIN' DAWLERS. That was so dumb. Moving on. $4 sangria was TITS! So good. We both got the steak sandwich and I'm pretty sure they gave us sirloin - it was perfectly rare, well seasoned, tender, right amount of cheese and onions, the fries were awesome, too. I am a VERY big fan of the food. So, I will most certainly be back, but will make sure poor Joe has some help so I can soak up the rays and knock back a few more than I was able to.

My review is solely for drinking. We ended up here 2 or 3 times during my wedding weekend. Great space, mostly friendly bartenders, many tv's, well made and fairly priced drinks, and PHOTOHUNT. If I lived in Charleston I would be here all the time.

I've been a number of times over the last several years and always had a good experience. Yesterday we just stopped in for a bit late afternoon for a couple of beers and an appetizer. They had about 8 - 10 good beers on tap. The menu was wide enough for something for everyone. WE just split the Irish Quesadilla which was very good. Service was very good - I saw early reviews about bad service but they seemed to have fixed that. Prices were pretty good for downtown Charleston. As we were leaving there was some live music getting going in the outside seating area in front. Only downside of the outdoor seating is you are right on East bay and cars moving along right next to you - not a huge deal. Lots of TVs around with folks watching college football and enjoying it.

We stopped here yesterday, after finding out that our first foray to the Tattooed Moose was to be thwarted by a long wait (and empty stomachs). I didn't head inside, as we ate on the front patio, but my wife said that it was very nice. The patio itself was nice - decently spaced tables, a couple palms, and a little fountain/fish pond (that looks like it needs some work). The beer list trends towards the macroswill, with few local or craft beers. Regardless, I ordered a flight of 4 oz pours, which included Guinness, Harp, Smithwick's, and Magner's cider. Unfortunately, they only had one guy serving the entire restaurant, including the outside patio, so service was fairly slow. I'd say we waited a good fifteen minutes for our first round of drinks, but once our food actually got there, the server was on top of us, checking in. Kinda weird. Anyway, we both ordered the steak sandwich, rare, and in my opinion, this sandwich is the sandwich by which all others should be judged. Huge chunks of sirloin that were super tender and well seasoned, with a good amount of cheddar cheese, on a kaiser roll, and everything was cooked perfectly rare. I can't say enough about how good this sandwich is. Seriously. My mouth is watering, wanting another. My wife had fries with her sandwich, while I tried the cole slaw. The fries were decent, but not great, and the slaw was standard pre-made food service slaw. I wouldn't order it again. But jeez, that sandwich. I'll go back here, just for the sandwich. Oh, last thing - Any restaurant/bar that plays Flogging Molly gets an extra star from me. The music was great, and I'd love to go back when they have live music outside!

Charleston has so many great bars/restaurants.....this is not one of them. We ordered a couple of beers and some nachos when we visited on a Saturday night. The beer was fine, and the nachos were average. The real killer was the lack of service. Our server (aka Ramathorne), was a ghost. Our food/drink took a very long time to get to us after we ordered (food was also not how we ordered it). We constantly saw our server walking into the back room and never coming out with anything, as well as just standing around. The place was not even that crowded. Eventually we just wanted to pay the check and get back to enjoying the city, but that took even longer to get and pay than the food took to order and eat. I am guessing everyone's server experience won't be as bad as ours was, but this place was average at best. A bad server was just the nail in the coffin.

Calamari was chewy with a funny aftertaste. Fish and chips were so Thickly battered that I had to break the fish fillet in half to break away the greasy exoskeleton. Chips were cold, onion rings were blah and greasy. Server was nice enough, but getting the check took forever and I think we were his only table for a Monday lunch. Would not have chosen this restaurant out of all the choices in charleston, but a friend picked it. Also, no baby changing table in the bathroom!!!

My husband and I were looking for a quick bite to eat while we were waiting for our carriage tour to start nearby. We didn't have much time, so we ordered some potato skins and split a club sandwich. The waitress was understanding of our rush and got everything out quickly. We appreciated the prompt service. The food was very good and just what we needed to have a quick lunch.

I love sitting on the deck and people watching. That is honestly why I give it 3 stars because of the location. Chill, catch a buzz, eat some pricey food, then head next door to big johns. When I walk in the only Molly Darcy employee I spoke to was the door guy. The next time was after I stood at a non busy bar for 15 20 minutes. A simple order of fries when they weren't busy (emphasizing again) took FOREVER. Expensive too. Great music. Great conversation with people around us. Two pluses!

A Irish bar with a bluegrass band playing out side made me stop to see what the heck was going on here. Since I make the banjo sound funny from time to time, I had to listen to the bluegrass. They were good, the lady singer sounded like Allison Krause and the banjo picker was terrific. I had a Guinness and enjoyed the atmosphere. Worth stopping.

On our recent trip to Charleston, we stopped into Molly Darcy's after finding the restaurant we intended to go to had a wait over an hour. We were promptly greeted at the door by a smiling hostess. We were immediately seated even though we had a group of seven. I opted for the fish n' chips. While it wasn't the best I've every had it was really good. The fish was crispy and fried just right. The fries were delicious My wife had the Irish breakfast. She loved it (even the black and white pudding!). They also have some great beers on tap. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about all of the beers and recommended a couple based upon my taste. He did a great job. We will definitely come back here if we are in the area.

We stopped in for a quick lunch. Service was quick and friendly. Food was served hot and our server checked frequently to see if we were in need of anything. My guess, this is the place to be on March 17th. And don't forget your green.

A great place for a pint, less than a block away from the historic City Market- it's a great place to get off your feet and take a breather. The staff was friendly and attentive. The outdoor patio was perfect for people watching and roomy enough that you don't feel like you're on top of the people next to you.

We stumbled upon this place walking back from the marina. Great place for lunch! I had the corned beef reuben and it was delicious. My wife had the bangers and mash, which are not listed on the website menu. We both thoroughly enjoyed the food here and would definitely recommend it.

I was really really impressed with this place. It has a nice, private courtyard area in the front, and a two-man band was playing outside in this area when we visited at 7pm on Sunday evening. No one was out in the courtyard at that time, though, because it was just too darn hot. I felt bad for the guys; they sounded pretty decent, especially considering you're getting free live entertainment. I wish there was a way they could pipe in the exterior sound system (the live music) into the restaurant, but alas. At least the music inside was a good mix, too. The interior is spacious, with plenty of tables and seating at the bar. I spotted a small game alcove with some arcade games and a pinball machine. The decor seemed appropriate for their Irish vibe (dark woods and a classic pub look), and yes, the bathrooms are VERY impressive. They were definitely something you'd expect to see at an upscale restaurant, not just your run-of-the-mill Irish pub. It was happy hour, so I ordered some specials-- an Irish Punch and later, a Sangria. Both were a great deal ($4, and $3, respectively) and a good size. The husband ordered an IPA and fish and chips. The fish and chips were perfect. Two large breaded and fried white fish fillets, with a tasty tarter sauce and thick-cut fries. I ordered a house salad and a bowl of the potato leek soup. They were both a good value for the price, and the soup came with two thick pieces of Irish soda bread, to boot. The soup and salad were both delicious. I make my own potato leek soup and Irish soda bread at home, and I must say, theirs was even better (I'm part Irish/Scottish; I know how they are supposed to taste). The soup was rich and creamy. I only wish the salad had come with some fresh button mushroom slices to really round it out. John was our server, and he did a superb job. He was there when we needed him, and yet didn't bug us when he was not needed. This is the first restaurant I've been to in my nearly two weeks here in Charleston where the server brought out water upon our arrival. At no point were we waiting impatiently for food, drinks, a to-go box, or the check. We didn't feel rushed, yet we didn't feel neglected at any point. John was obviously keeping his eye on us from a safe distance and anticipating our needs. The place wasn't busy when we went, but we had walked by it on Saturday night, and it looked pretty popular and fun. I hope they stick around for a long time; they seem like a great addition to the Charleston bar and restaurant scene.

If you're ever near Market Street and want to just move one block away (maybe not even that far) for some good food and a little quieter atmosphere than Molly Darcy's is a great option. The biggest issue we had by far on our last visit was the service behind the bar...for a bar that's not nearly as busy as other places in town to make you stand there for over 10 minutes every time you want to order a beer is ridiculous. That's really my only dislike about this place but it was almost bad enough for our entire group that we were considering moving on. The outside decks both front and back are great areas to sit outside and enjoy people watching. We happened to meet the General Manager during our last visit and she was extremely friendly and cordial...even bought us a round of shots. I hope that they can speed up their service process, otherwise we may not be making too many trips here again.

Great live music and refreshing white sangrias on a hot evening. We didn't see many places with live music while in Charleston so it was great to find an outdoor patio with live music.

Can't give a very honest review of this place- I came here first at night, for college night (25 cent beers--Holy Shnikes!). As many places in Charleston, there was no short supply of beautiful women, although I would consider this a freshman bar. When I went back a couple of days later during the daylight, the scene was much different; it was actually a Irish Pub as advertised. Didn't eat, just had to pick up my forgotten debit card (that in itself should let you know how much fun I had while there).

I was impressed with this place. The decor is pretty awesome, the bar is unique. They have a kind of private pool room in the back, a couple foosball tables, cornhole on the patio which also has another bar. My boyfriend and I had excellent service here, the bartender was actually Irish, from county kerry, which was awesome. we had irish coffees, some jameson and a couple beers. they had a good selection of irish beers on tap. We came back later in the evenings and they had a band, which kicked ass as well. definitely recomment this place.

When we were visiting Charleston in July 2 - 4, we stopped in many bars, Molly Darcy's being one of them. It is a fun bar with good drinks and if I remember correctly they had music too, which is always a great thing.

Went for brunch on Saturday around lunch time. Although the food was good - I would say average I cannot give more than 1 star. The bartender was the most unfriendly, incompetent server I have ever encountered. With only 3 others at the bar, our Mimosas took about 10 min, when ordered brunch he asked "what kind of bacon, Irish or American", we replied, "what is the different" - him: "I have no idea, no differences I guess" Us and the couple beside us both were left with all our dirty plates, etc while he walked around aimlessly. He never once asked how we were or anything. TERRIBLE SERVICE/BARTENDER - my comment leaving was I actually couldn't believe a manager/owner would allow someone as unfriendly/incompetent/rude to be behind their bar.

A fun place to enjoy a few drinks after dark and sit outside in nice weather. The staff hospitality and service was top notch. And the prices were very reasonable. The live music was a nice touch, enjoyable and not intrusive.

This is my favorite Irish restaurant/pub in Charleston, South Carolina. There is a great outdoor patio seating area, more formal inside dining, and awesome bar room. It just opened earlier this month, and I have never been happier!! Best Fish & Chips in Charleston, at a reasonable price. Plus, ladies, check out the bathrooms. FINALLY an Irish restaurant that has nice bathrooms. Great decor inside, friendly restaurant and bar staff, as well as an amazing menu and beer list. Seriously Charleston, trust me on this one.. you will not be sorry you decided to dine/drink here!

Stopped in last night for the first time, attracted by the location, the patio, the music. Wanted to get some good food and drink while watching football and the baseball playoffs, then finish off on the patio with a cigar while enjoying good music. Well...it didn't happen. Waitress was friendly and we were seated quickly but the place was understaffed and service was slow to non-existent. Without going into the blow-by-blow, suffice it to say that drinks are overpriced ("house" Jameson is $6.50 per one ounce shot glass), the kitchen was incredibly slow (45 minute wait) and food quality was equivalent to the old "TV Dinner", right down to the institutional brown gravy and imitation mashed potatoes. Sampled four different dishes, all of which tasted pre-prepared/frozen, nothing actually "cooked". Why did it take so long? On this particular night, we had to ask that the TV be switched from local news to the football game (SC vs. LSU), which one of the regulars helped us with. Server was great and apologetic but manager never stopped by to do the same. Apparently he offered (through our server) to buy us a round of drinks; at that point we had been there so long that we were done drinking and just wanted to leave...we suggested that he could comp our last round if he wanted? Didn't happen. If we weren't going to order another round, we weren't going to get a free drink, we left. Too bad, really. The place has potential. Even if this was an off night for service, the reheated food and drink prices (for straight up cheap booze...no fancy mixing involved) will keep us away. Don't mind paying for good food, drink and service and this place has the potential to deliver on all three but we won't be returning.

  • Hyler B.

Ate there about 7 PM on a Friday in September-low tourist season. Service was okay but the kitchen has a problem. Food was unbelievable slow. It was just average and the fish was delivered on cold chips. Irish nachos had potatoes that we're not fully cooked. If you sit outside bring bug spray - they had none to offer.

Bring your dog to the porch because Molly Darcy's is a pooch friendly place. Sitting outside on a summers eve with your best buddy and a black and blue beer is about as good as downtown charleston gets. Atleast tot his girl.

My wife and I decided to try out this new Irish pub that apparently none of the locals had been to yet. The food was great, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. I loved to take my Guinness outside and enjoy a cigarette with the Irish music in the background. I had to remind myself I was in Charleston. There was live music, but that was less than great... they were okay at best. It might have been better if my meds had allowed me to drink more. (I would have been at the bar.) But the later it got, the more partiers arrived, and that was a little too much for us... but it is a pub after all! Highly recommended!

Great bar; horrible customer experience!! Friends and I were looking for a laid back bar to have a few drinks with friends that were in town. The 10 min. Closing warning was sounded, so my friends and I were finishing the last quarters of our drinks when the floor manager comes running by yelling for us to get out. I said no problem, I would like to finish my drink, the floor manager proceeds to run over and literally pulled the drink out of my hand. We are not college students and were not being belligerent. I recommend avoiding this establishment for a night out.
