Gene's reminded me a bar that was probably pretty awesome in the 80s, but now is just sorta old and dark and smells like a place that used to allow smoking and has way too much crap on the walls. It's just kinda dark and feels dirty. The fella wanted to come here after seeing some Beer Advocate reviews. Their selection was good, not great, and the day we went around lunch, the bartender seemed to be the only person waiting on people. That was fine when it was just us and another group, but after about 30 minutes and 6 more groups, service got pretty crummy. If you're looking for unique craft beer, there are way better places in Charleston.

Went here on an overnight stay in Charleston with my cousin. Humongous beer selection and it appears that burgers are what they do best. My cousin and his girlfriend both got burgers and raved about them. I had the bratwurst with sauerkraut and it was very good. Nicely cooked, plump, and full of flavor. The waitress we had was very good at directing us towards beers that fit our palate and I'd trust her judgement in the future.

Beer selection is solid. The place doesn't smell like urinal cakes (a sign of unclean beer lines) like it used to. The staff is different but still crappy (I stood at the bar one night waiting to be served while one of the bartenders shot the shit with a patron while the other cleaned up glasses in a sparsely populated bar). Love the shuffleboard table & foosball table. Prices are pretty good.

What sets Gene's apart is the great beer selection. I LOVE the Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout. Plus you can play connect four while you're there, which gets more difficult as the night goes on. The service is always attentive. The food is another story. It's pretty much your standard bar fare, so not anything special. If you're looking for a good place to grab a beer, this is a good place though. Look out for parking though, sometimes it fills up quickly.

Gene's is Charleston's 2nd oldest bar in town. Love the wooden atmosphere, board games are free for the bored, beer selection is off the chain! Burgers are great with steak fries and plenty of bar food options. Bartenders will probably not be your friend, but sit at a table and hopefully your waitress will take good care of you. There is a pool table and darts for shits and giggles. I do love this area and a great stop for a beer.

I haven't been to Gene's in years and after a recent visit, I'm ashamed by that. My folks live in Mt. Pleasant and when my brother wanted to get some beers, neither one of use wanted to go to the other side of town. I thought surely there's a place in Mt. Pleasant where we could get some Belgians, etc. Wrong. First we went to Village Tavern. Besides being dead, the music was too loud and the beer list too short. And, let's face it, years of smoking made that place smell like an ashtray. So then we went to Mike Caulder's behind Target. I thought it was a decent enough neighborhood pub. But there were no Belgians or anything else remotely exotic. After an hour of driving around, I finally decided to cross both rivers and go to Gene's. Surprisingly, at 9:30 on a Saturday night, we were able to slide into a booth without a wait. I started off with a special draft (Kona coffee porter) and my brother had a Belgian he'd never tried (Malheur), then we ordered the heart attack-licious loaded fries. To wash those down, I had the Highland Porter and he got the Highland Stout. Good times. Looking around while we were there, I forgot how much I like this place. The helpful staff, the awesome beer selection (100+) and the no-frills, Einsenhower-era vibe of the place. We could have stayed longer than we did, but it was a long drive back to Mt. Pleasant and there was a DUI Crackdown in force. Better safe than sorry, right? But the next time I come to visit family, I'm bringing a DD so I can settle in.

Great selection of beer and huge, delicious portions of food. My date and I both had the Wienerschnitzel which was amazing! Very casual atmosphere to hang out and play some pool or just relax. Would definitely return.

Environment was perfect for catching up and just taking it all in. A mix of both locals and passers thru. Highly recommend the burger. Great taste and value for the $$. Know you're getting a good burger when they ask" how'd you like that cooked". Medium was mine. Awesome beer selection. Reunion with Mickey Big Mouth was nice and cold.

I Ate at gene Tuesday night with my boyfriend and his parents. We had a great time. The server was great very friendly and personable. We ordered 3 types of wings. The buffayaki which I am a fan of. This flavor is buffao mixed with teriyaki. Not spicy but in the flavor category it is great. The honey mustard wings taste just like a good homemade honey mustard taste. Not my thing for wings but they were what they promised. The teriyaki and sriracha wings I wasn't able to taste but they smelled and looked delicious. They had board games around so we picked connect 4 for a while it was fun!. Large beer selection and trivia is on Tuesday nights. We did not play but enjoyed listening in. I give it a solid 4 for a bar on a Tuesday night.

This is a local hole-in-the-wall, dive bar with GREAT burgers. The food is always surprisingly delicious. There's a lesson here, don't judge a book by its cover. If you're looking for new sleek fancy fixtures, this is the wrong place. If you are looking for a great burger at a bar, this place does it right! I tried the Avondale burger last night which paired perfectly with a draft beer. The Avondale has an amazing fried green tomato, pimento cheese, crispy bacon served on burger cooked the way you want....I would've leaned towards medium rare if I had a do over. Their fries were yummy, a bit salty with ample seasoning. This place also has some loaded fries that are truly addicting, careful, you've been warned!

I've spent many a night at Gene's. The beer selection is awesome, the bartenders are delightfully sassy, and the prices are very reasonable. I love to come hang out, play a game of pool, darts, or trivial pursuit on the table. The wings, burgers, and fries are all delicious and typical bar food. The bathrooms are the only thing that I'm not a huge fan of. But when it's just a ten minute walk from my house, I really can't complain too much!

We ran the gamut of bars in Avondale one night. After spending the whole day in Camden at the Carolina Cup, my group was not done partying. We started off at Pearlz. Being outside all day and feeling a bit mucky, it was a little bit more than what we were looking for. Next we powered up at the Mellow Mushroom with some grub. The night bartender was such a nice guy. He made my SoCo and lime perfectly with a decent sized shot of SoCo and a squeeze of lime. Then we headed across the street to The Roost. This was totally my style 10 years ago (loud, packed, and a Meat Market), NOT in my 30's. After a couple of drinks, we headed next door to Gene Haufbrau. Upon walking in, I felt like Goldilocks. "This bed (bar) was juuuuust right!" It fit the bill for the wide range of people in our group--large selection of brews for the beer connoisseurs, unpretentious for the rednecky folks, pool tables, board games, and a small outdoor patio for our smokers.

Gene's does have the best craft beer selection in Avondale with plenty of drafts and even more in bottles to choose from. I enjoy coming here on my nights out bar hopping around in Avondale to escape some of the insanity of some of the smaller places. Not that Gene's doesn't get crowded, just that they have more space compared to The Roost & Voodoo which makes it easier to relax with some friends while having a beer and maybe hear each-other talk. I only ate here once and it was for a very hungover brunch many moons ago so I won't comment except for the fact that it did the job as far as I recall. Board games all over contribute to its divey-ness but I'm sure that's what they're going for.

If you love micro brews, board games, and an old school tavern type of feel then this is where you go. This place would be a blast to go with a huge group. I didn't get anything to eat because everything kind of looked dirty and unsanitary. I'm pretty sure it just because of the old school theme they are trying to portray, but I couldn't think to eat. The pool tables and house sticks need some major updating. Dart boards and shuffle board are all good though. I'd go back but only with a large group that wants to really slam some back.

The beer selection is over the too and great selection and price. I ordered a burger and a beer for a late lunch. The burger was cooked just as I asked along with a hefty portion of fries to go with it. The quality of both where good and was a very enjoyable with a pint to German lager to go along with them. I do feel like the price was a little high for what your getting during the day. Maybe once a few beers are consumed the prices would be more acceptable I would recommend it, but maybe the schnitzel is the way to go.

Ok, I go here for drinks and Trish is one of my favorite bartenders. I love this place and they still have real Coke products and not that knock-off soda crap. I love them for that. So, the other day I'm starving and haven't eaten at Gene's in over a decade. Last time I had the spinach dip, which was pretty good. This time, I ordered chicken fingers - protein and breading to soak up some drinks ya know. Ok, these aren't frozen chicken already breaded from a bag, it's actual chicken, hand breaded and then fried. I had mine tossed in a blue cheese hot sauce mix. I still can't believe how good they were. Who expects that kind of detail from a bar kitchen? I know I didn't and was very pleasantly surprised. I'm almost a regular there and never thought to give a review for a bar, but that kitchen deserves some props for making fresh food and not some pre breaded chicken from a freezer bag. So the next time you're hungry at Gene's get something from the kitchen, you'll be glad you did.

My mouth waters every time thing king about genes food!! So good. I always get the mexi sandwich which has chicken, cheese, bacon, avocado and some sauce on it that makes it absolutely delicious! Yeah it's not very healthy but next time I'm hungover I need to remember to go to genes!

Gene's is a pretty good bar where the crowd falls somewhere in between hipster and frat bro. Excellent selection of beers, OK prices. The food is pretty good as well. I noticed the last time I was there that they expanded a little bit and put what looks to be a smoking room on the side to the right just as you come in the main front door. It is a nice addition. They also have foozball, board games scattered about, Golden Tee/Silver Strike, and two dart boards & pool tables in the back. Darts are free and the pool tables cost $1 in quarters which is pretty standard. My only beef with the place is that service tends to be a little bit impersonal and very very slow. The most people I've seen working behind the bar are 2-3 on a really busy night which is not adequate for a bar that can have 150+ packed in. Still, this is a good place to stop by if you are ever in the Avondale area. Protip: I recommend that you should make it a point to look a little disheveled when you go to Gene's. Every time I have walked in wearing a polo shirt or have my hair combed, I tend to get strange looks and even slower service. Not sure why, but if you have a neck beard and a plaid shirt they consider you a priority.

This place is cool. Its just comfortable and laid back. Its a great drinking atmosphere, it's like 10 minutes walking distance which gives it a star in my book and they got a great beer selection, I like IPA's and tried quite a few. Haven't tried the food yet.

I have loved Genes for a very long time. My husband and I used to come here when we were 21 and still dating. That's 8 years of Genes under our belt. Whenever we had friends visiting we HAD to take them to Genes. "They have the BEST loaded fries you'll ever experience!" We would rave. And every single person who tried them agreed. The. Best. When we lived in California we craved the loaded fries. When we moved back to the area, the first hometown meal we had was loaded fries! This just goes to show you how delicious and UNIQUE they were. Unique because they were WEDGE fries. Not the same ol generic boring skinny Minnie's. And they were jammed full of cheese, bacon, and green onions. They burned the crap out of your mouth because you couldn't wait to shove a thick potato wedge covered with cheese and drenched in ranch in there. So good. Husband and I were also obsessed with their Mahi Club, super light and refreshing to pair with the pile of loaded fries and beers we'd fill our bellies with on every visit. Same also goes for my other personal favorite, portobello sandwich that I would get as a wrap. Imagine my dismay when husband told me upon his last visit with friends "There's no reason to live in Charleston any more. Genes took the Mahi off the menu." Nooooo! Very sad news. Last night after a beer-filled bowling fest, we decided to go with other Genes-loving friends to get piles of loaded fries. I also knew I was craving that Portobello since Mahi is no longer an option. Our longtime faithful server for our 8-year stint, Sean, relayed the bad news. They took Portobello off the menu. Oh, and the fries are different. They aren't wedges anymore. This is too much to handle!!! What am I going to eat??? I need to find out why, let's ask the GM. GM was very nice and listened to our table bemoan the wedge fry changes, etc. He explained the cost of goods was high for wedges and popularity of our two favorite items was low. This is a place you get burgers and wings after all. I've been in restaurant work my whole life, I get it. He even told me I could bring my own portobello and they'd make it for me. I might be tempted to do that if withdrawal gets too nasty! Ok I understand the reasoning behind the menu item changes, but I strongly discourage messing with the loaded fries guys! The new loaded fries were not anywhere near as good as the wedges used to be. I'd definitely suggest keeping those wedges and just raise the price. Everyone at our table even said they'd pay $13 for a pile of loaded wedges. It's worth it. Now there's nothing left for me at Genes. Nothing. End dramatic rant.

Gene's is back to where it used to be. I returned once again and found it under new management. The menu has changed a little bit. The beer list had been updated, the service was awesome and the food was gone! I tried very hard not to lick the plate. I don't think anyone was watching...

Good wings, but ask for them to be cooked well done. The Honey Siracha and Lemon Pepper are very good. Good bar with Angry Orchard on tap. I'm not really a beer drinker, so it's nice to have something other than beer and soda to drink.

Gene's is the quintessential neighborhood beer bar. They've been around for like 50 years in the same spot and they've gotten pretty damn good at slinging delicious beers and really great bar food! They have about 15 beers on tap, all of which are really interesting and delicious, and dozens and dozens in bottles of equal intrigue. If you like beer, you'll be in heaven! Try the food while you're here too! It's actually really good! Mostly it's traditional bar food, sandwiches, wings and such. I definitely recommend the Wienerschnitzel!! It's delicious! They have a large game area also with a shuffle board! You can easily kill an evening playing shuffle board and having some drinks here! Stop in for a drink or food anytime and you'll be really glad you did...and probably leave with a buzz!!!

Being of German decent, I have not found a location that serves any single entree nor app that has a German influence. I dont expect to see kartoffle-glassen on the menu at Pete's Pig Paradise (no such place), but the lack of ethnic cuisine in CHS is really disappointing. Well, at Gene's I can score sour-bratten and chase it with a Francis Kaner Weisse Bier, ON TAP!! That still blows me away, its just so unique to see that. The burgers are fantastic, I have had all of the apps, everyone is a one way ticket to Deliciousland. Back to the beer: If the yeasted German brews do not tickle your fancy, there are about another thousand to two to choose from, from all stretches of the globe, but bring a few extra bucks if its going to be a long night of drinking the good stuff. Pool, skeet-ball, games (board games are available) darts all are there, if you have your beer sports in mind.

What makes Gene's so unique is that it is just outside the city limits of Charleston in the Avondale area but caters to a local and city crowd. It is a nice escape with a warm staff, amazing beer selection and most of all games.. Not just pool but Yahtzee, Connect 4 and Chess. Yes board games. You heard me... What can be more fun. And...You cannot smoke inside. Another big bonus.

What a great Haufbrau. It's got the same friendly vibe you'd find in Munich. These guys love tending bar, love talking beer, and are plain good at what they do. The motherlode burger is served up with a fried egg and bacon on top. Order it extra rare with a dash of hot sauce and enjoy.

(Note: this review is graphic in the extreme. If you don't care to be traumatized by horrific bathroom and food poisoning descriptions, don't read the following. More importantly, if you don't care to experience said horrors for yourself, don't eat at Gene's) Having drunk my way around Charleston's bar scene for over a decade, I had hit Gene's a few times for nightlife, which --along with their staggering beer selection-- is definitely a sight to behold. Obviously, since it's what 90% of the reviews talk about. I decided to go sober for lunch one Friday, and it scared me off ever darkening their doorway again. I'd like to point out that I do NOT have a weak stomach or nose; in my time overseas with the military, I have seen and smelled some pretty gross stuff. However, for a restroom in a first-world country that wasn't currently in the midst of some sort of disaster, the bathroom at Gene's was an atrocity. I could smell the bathroom 15 feet away, right near the bar. The funk assaulted my nose in a way I can't fully describe. But the smell was not nearly the worst of it: If you told me that bathroom had been cleaned any time in the last 6 years, I'd slap you for lying. Crusted urine stains on the urinal, all over the toilet bowl AND seat, and EVEN on the counter top around the sink. Dried vomit across three walls of the single stall. It was beyond atrocious. I walked in, and walked right back out. Having told the (otherwise unoccupied) bartender about the situation, I returned to the table. How he couldn't smell it from his position is utterly beyond me. Perhaps a childhood injury that left him without a sense of smell? When my chili cheese dogs hit the table, it was apparent that whatever cataclysm had struck the bathroom had also felled the kitchen staff. My dogs look like they had been made hours ago and then left under a broiler turned on high. The cheese was scorched, the beef in the chili crunchy, and the bun was visibly charred black in a way that did not suggest intentional toasting, or grilling at all. Picking up a dog made it very clear these weren't intentionally toasted, but had simply sat too long in their own juices. The bottom of the bun disintegrated on contact. A cursory look at the actual hot dog made me wonder if it had been in any way cooked before being slapped into the bun. The VIOLENT stomach reaction I had 3/4ths of the way through the first dog assured me they hadn't. I rushed to the same bathroom I had turned my nose up at 30 minutes before and added to the vomit there. I didn't stay to complain, I didn't stay to pay. I asked my table companions if they would explain my predicament as I fled the scene, attempting to get to my house and a clean bathroom before more of my stomach contents came to light. Apparently my leaving due to food poisoning their kitchen caused was not reason to remove my (mostly uneaten, mostly inedible) entree from our bill. Needless to say, I won't be returning.

Lots of beer and board games (although WARNING to anybody who is into Scrabble, it seems that all the boards are rigged!), but the food is not very good. I had their portobello sandwich and still don't know how to put into words how much I didn't like it. Service was ok, but nothing out of the norm.

First, If your expecting a German Restaurant.. STOP. They only serve one German meal. Upon entering the restaurant we were not greeted, and we got an unwelcome look from the bartender. Long story short, great food, poor service. Bartender looked perturbed when others sat down at his bar.

The best bar food in town and they have more than 100 beers to choose from, lots on tap. Gene's is the left corner of the "Barmuda Triangle" (see Voodoo Lounge and Triangle Grill to complete the triumvirate) and probably the last of the three you'll hit while hopping. That's because of the boardgames and the cool late-night vibe. Getting back to how awesome the food is, I usually get the grilled portabella sandwich or the crayfish salad. My friends love the burgers. They have a cool "mega booth" that's enclosed and is great for larger parties. You can actually carry on a conversation in there when the bar gets packed.

They've got a real good beer selection and the bartenders are pretty friendly. Pool tables, board games, tube tv's and a cigarrette machine tell you that this is a laid back bar. They're german food is definitely not bad for a bar. Check it out.

This started out as a pretty fun night. My friends and I were looking for a place in the area in which to play darts and we stumbled upon Gene's. Their beer selection is very good with many foreign beers as well as many locally (Southeast region) brewed beers, in addition to the traditional staples of any bar. The atmosphere is nothing out of the ordinary and the patrons seem for the most part to be a fun loving crowd, which is always a plus. Things were going great until it came time to leave. As my friends and I were finishing up our game of connect four at our table and waiting for our friend to come back from the bathroom, we heard someone shout "what the hell?". We turn around and see our friend getting searched in a way that I can only be described as similar to airport searches of middle-eastern males on September 12, 2001. Upon finding out that our friend had attempted to smuggle a beer out, not knowing the local container laws, we were all told never to come back to the bar. Things deteriorated into a shouting match and I am sure resulted in a generally awkward moment for anyone who had to witness it. Note to Gene's: the same message can be sent by telling someone that they cannot take a beer out as is sent by violently frisking them and then forcibly removing them. We did go back for lunch the next day, so their threats are apparently empty, which is why they get one star.

I have lived behind this once popular, old Charleston hangout for over six years and for many years would come here 3 or more times a week for food or beers with friends. This place still has the best beer selection in Charleston and it's always changing, with lots of seasonal beers you can't find at other dives around town. The food was never really the reason to go here, but their burgers and wings were always decent bar food. The reason we always went here was for the neighborhood feel where all the bartenders and servers knew our name and the place was almost like an adult community center for our neighborhood. All that seems to have changed in the last six months or so as the bar seems to have lost almost all the staff we loved there in a short amount of time, with all of the new people treating us locals as strangers or with indifference at best.. The place is already kinda smelly and old but without the personalities of the 9 or so folks who worked there, it's downright dim. Stopped in last night after tennis for some wings to go, got the wrong sauce and the wings were way undercooked. While I stopped my regular visits here when the staff all left, now I am stopping my visits all together. The Roost next door seems to be picking up where the Old Gene's left off and their food is better, so try that if you are in the Avondale area. Also, note that in the last year several bars have opened in the area and it is really hard to park around here anymore.

This is a cool place to hang out. They have lots of beers and decent food. More importantly they have games. Jenga, Connect Four, Checkers, Scrabble (drunk Scrabble?), and so on. I hear they have shuffle board too but I didn't go look for it. Next time, next time.

Was extremely disappointed to hear/see the changes going on at my former favorite bar. One of the best bartenders they had fired, two more quit... I've been going here for over 10 years, had a lot of good times, but I may not go back. If the rumor is true that the bartender above was let go to "bring in new faces", I hope Genes closes it's doors for good. There may be more to this story and maybe the firing had justification, but if not, I will not return. Shameful to see an iconic bar go down the tubes.

This place is outside of downtown, but worth the ride. It looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70s, but that makes it feel welcoming, like Grandma. Beer selection is HUGE, best in the city we could find. Local craft brews to quality Belgian beers....and the mass produced domestic crap too if you're into that. Menu was perfect for a low-key night. Corndogs, burgers, salads, weinerschnitzel, fried Snickers, you name it, it was good. They have pool tables, a sweet jukebox, and piles of chess, checkers and Yahtzee to keep you busy. And if you like Trivial Pursuit from the 80s, they have a glass full of cards on every table. How can you not have fun with that??

Stopped in at the recommendation of a friend who used to live in the area after playing golf to grab a beer and a bite. We were not disappointed! Extensive beer selection and better than expected food quality. We had the crawdads as an appetizer and the mexican club and fried green tomato BLT. The potato salad is also outstanding. I recommend it if you're in the area!

Nice place to visit stopped to have a beer and the selection of beers was amazing, bottled ,canned and draft. Everything you could imagine. The atmosphere is casual and inviting lots of friendly people, pool tables, foosball and boardgames. It is someplace I will visit again.

The good, lots of choices of beer, they offer a lot of board/card games if you happen to be with a group of friends, and serves food pretty late. The bad, parking is awful, service good be better, as could the food. Out of the bars in the Avondale are, Gene's is on the lower end of choices.

A note to those reviewers who had a problem with the cleanliness of Gene's: It's a dive bar (more or less). It's supposed to be a bit scummy. That being said, this bar has a good selection of beers (the biggest in town so far), especially local stuff. The food is solid bar food, especially since they changed the menu. Gene's is a big place and it does get loud when it's busy, but this is a minor quibble. The staff is generally amiable and attentive (I'm surprised at some of the complaints in this area). On the whole, a laid back place to enjoy a drink.

Greasy and delicious bar food brunch. They have board games on the tables (Connect Four, anyone?) and mimosa pitchers that will leave you wondering if you can drive home. But don't drink and drive! Just find yourself a Mormon friend and head over to Gene's to indulge (or sober up while you shop at the thrift store next door). Right across the street from Triangle Char & Bar, Gene's is a good option if you're looking for a quieter atmosphere (it's a bar with less of a brunch crowd than Triangle) or for food that'll stick to your insides. Eat up and head home or to the beach for a nap--you'll need one after this meal!
