I finally made it there with 2 fish loving friends. Let me disappoint a little here. Its only 4.5 stars cause when you get here and the 2 little tables and bar are occupied, confusion about what to do initially sets in. Now for the food. Fresh perfectly fried sea food, a soda and a friendly staff. I just had a real Happy Meal.

I've been back -- many, many times. It is always exactly what I wanted, always delicious, always cheap, always filling. Excuse me while I go post a photo of this in the Wikipedia entry for "fried fish sandwich."

I walked in the insane heat and arrived at Dave's at 2:16pm. It was closed. I re-read the hours on their door and it clearly said that they close at 3pm and reopen at 5pm. Are you serious?! I was sweating, hot, hungry and disgusted with such unprofessional behaviour. Fine, I get it. You are the best. Amazing. Incredible. So much so that you do not have the decency to at least put a note on the door saying, "Sorry, we closed early, we apologize for the inconvenience." Just because people rave about your food it does not make it okay to be so rude and close early without even a note!

Dave's used to be one of our best kept secrets until Yelp came along. I love this place. You will find no shrimp fresher and no lima beans better than you'll find at Dave's. The batter isn't too much and isn't too little. If someone wanted to pay someone for lessons on how to fry the perfect shrimp, Terry would be the guy to teach you. This is local flavor at its best. If you're thinking about standing in line waiting for seafood at a certain other downtown restaurant, as a local, I'll smile at you knowingly as I pass you by to head to Dave's.

Was visiting some family in from Cincinnnti, OH. Some of the best fried seafood I have ever had. Fresh salt water fish, shrimp and scallops. Fried in some of the best batter I had in my life. I was born in Virginia and have been through the gamut of fried seafood. And this guy is doing it right and doing it FAST. Damn this place is ridiculously good. Great food, great prices. Dave is doing it the way it should be done. Wish we had some thing like this back in Cincinnati. Nothing here comes this close

Kind of pissed off about this place. Pissed off, because I am just now finding out about it and ever since the Anchor Line closed, I've been searching for good local seafood that's cheap. Paradise found! Yeah, it's not in the best part of town, but if you don't act like an idiot and draw attention to yourself, you'll be fine. We did get a couple of looks when we walked in, but being that I don't care and I was hungry, it didn't bother me much. I thought it was kind of funny. Anyway, after a minute or two, the people were nice and even talked to us. One guy working the stove and fryer. Yeah, I said "stove and fryer", and I said "one guy". Sure nice guy too. I got a side of collards, which I'm guessing has ham hocks in it, Charleston red rice, and fried skrumps (shrimp for all y'all comeyahs). If you don't know what a comeyah is, google it. Possibly THE BEST fried skrumps I've ever had, dare I say better than Anchor Line. If you've had Charleston red rice before, you know it can get a bit dry if not cooked right. This was super moist and lots of it. I found myself scraping the container. Collards were spiced just right and cooked in a big pot for a long time, so you know the "green" was cooked out of 'em. Just the way I like it! If you like lightly fried seafood that tastes really good and is under $10, then this is your place to go. I'll def be back during lent.

What a great atmosphere (well, different kind of atmosphere). Old school soul food. Cheap. Fun. Friendly. Quite an experience, miles away from the crowds of Market st and upscale restaurants.

Delicious. Probably some of the best fried seafood I've ever had. We got the mixed seafood platter which included shrimp, fish, scallops, deviled crab , and french fries...all for $13! My girlfriend and I shared one platter, and it was plenty to fill us both up for lunch. The service was mediocre, but it's evident people come here for the food. The restaurant is definitely located in a seedy part of Charleston, but even business people were coming in to grab some lunch. Once you get past the fact that the woman deep frying your food is also the one who hands back your change, you'll love the experience. You should make this a must-visit on your trip to Charleston.

Great little eatery! On a one night stay in Charleston, we looked on yelp for the best place to eat and get a feel for the city. We found Dave's, went there for the food, and stayed for a conversation with the owner and executive chef. The fish sandwich was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The okra soup over rice was a perfect southern side. Even more, we learned about the history and heritage of Charleston. We will definitely be back for more.

My friend who's gone to school in Charleston suggested I go to any "hole-in-the-wall" type places for amazing food during my visit. With the help of Yelp, I stumbled upon Dave's Carryout. It appears to be located in a pretty shady area of Charleston, but as a tourist, what do I know? Once my travelling buddy and I entered, we were greeted with a very warm welcome by the owners. Note that this place literally is a hole in the wall: there's two tables, a bar to order the food, and the bathroom. We ordered the seafood platter and a fried shrimp/scallops platter, both around the $10-15 range. The food came in a styrofoam box and hot sauce was available. Simply put, this restaurant is one of the best fried seafood places I have ever eaten. We had some conversation with the owners (after all, we're two Asians in the South, so it clearly screams tourists), and mentioned how we found this place (Yelp). I don't think they knew what Yelp was, but they were very pleased. Highly recommend!

I am in town on business and I wanted to eat here, but they never opened. After waiting around with 4 other people until 530, I left.

We got here in the dead of night. I almost missed this place. There is a reason that carry-out is in the name. Yeah, I was trying to rhyme but it didn't work it. This place is small and not big on looks. There are two small tables in here and a small bench. This place was meant for carry-out orders. I think 90 percent of what this place does is fried food. The food is very good and very cheap. I probably would visit this a lot if I lived in this city. It is right down the street from King's Street. The food is not healthy but it is cheap and delicious.

Solid and cheap seafood spot in the downtown area if you're looking for takeout. The seafood platter includes shrimp, fish, scallops, deviled crab and fries for $13...great deal no doubt but the fish left alot to be desired, perhaps because it was the end of the night...other than that it was pretty good. I may give them another try on my next visit.

  • Matt C.

You go here for the food. This is just plain and simple delicious fried sea food. You don't good here for the crowd or the service, you go here for when you want good fried seafood. I had the fish sandwich which was 2 large fried fish filets on white bread with tarter sauce. Was simple and delicious. My buddy had the friend shrimp and scallops which I tried and will go back for. My red rice side was the best I've ever had. Go for the food and don't expect anything else

You cannot beat Dave's on location. It is a stand alone hole in the wall grill with a 10 inch TV, a down home family feel and a great selection of quick fried food for all the residents of the area. It is not the best but it is convenient and always hot and ready for you. The hours can be a little unpredictable sometimes but it is part of their mystery.

I seriously don't know why this place gets such great reviews!!! IT WAS TERRIBLE!!! My sister and I were in town and read such great things about this restaurant. We stopped by for lunch and it was closed. The sign on the door even said their lunch hours that day were from 11a-3p. Later that night my sister and I stopped back in just to see if they would be open and they were, so we decided to see what all the hype was about. We ordered the fried seafood combo. It literally was seafood tossed in flour and fried and was served with very generic factory french fries like you get from a high school cafeteria. The food literally had no seasoning and no taste! Long John Silvers is 100 times better than this place...in fact, I would have had been more satisfied with a fish filet sandwich combo at McDonalds, and that says a LOT coming from me!!! Do yourself a favor and save the money and stop by Kroger buy a box of fish sticks...at least Kroger is open when they say they are going to be!

Great food, great place, great value. Doesn't get anymore authentically low-country than Dave's. Fresh shrimp, scallops and fish lightly breaded, spiced just enough and fried just to perfection. Different side dishes (hoppin' john, collards, cabbage, Lima beans and more) are offered on different nights, so check in advance if you want a specific side. Take time to chat with the very loyal regulars - you'll enjoy yourself and learn a thing or two or three.

Wow. SO-good! First let me say I was extremely leery of this place. The neighborhood gets sketch at night ( at least by the looks of it) and a fish sandwich just wasn't sounding super appetizing in ninety degree heat. I was even more discouraged by the fact that it was a carry-out place and I was starving/exhausted from walking so I just wanted to sit and eat my dinner. My boyfriend was persistent so I gave in and I am happy to say all of my apprehension was misguided- this place was fabulous! We ordered our meals and within about 10-15 min we had our take out containers ready to find a place to eat. We walked to the park and both opened our containers shocked at the sheer amount of food! I know sometimes when I am super hungry I eat so fast and therefore fill up leaving half the food on the plate- this was not the case. I ate everything! It all tasted fresh and delicious. The accompanying sauces were so good and overall this was definitely one of the best dishes Ive eaten in Charleston (and the cheapest = score!) Definitely will be going on my next visit!

Went to this lil neighborhood gem last night for the first time. We called our order in, the staff person was very helpful when I told him we were first timers and didn't have a menu. Got two shrimp platters - generous, perfectly fried. Cant wait to go back for the seafood platter.

Perrrrfectly fried food! Got the seafood platter complete with fried fish, fried shrimp, fried scallops, deviled crabs, & fries. Nice staff (just 1 guy behind the counter, the other doing the frying.) GO HERE!

Dave's Carry Out is one of Charleston's best hole-in-the-wall secrets. It's carry out so don't expect a sit down experience, but it's some of the best seafood on the peninsula with prices that just can't be beat. They've got fried platters, fish sandwiches and other delectables in the southern seafood range. Place your order, sit, watch tv for a minute and Dave's notably clean kitchen will cook up your meal right in front of you. Three cheers for Dave's!

Took my boys here this weekend. We saw the line out the door at Hyman's and the prices on the menu and it was cheaper to take a rickshaw to this place. This is a working man's place, plus the enlightened "College" of Charleston students who want be hip and cool. Fresh reasonable priced seafood prepared/FRIED while you wait. You can eat it at one of the tables inside, but most people carry out.

  • Aaron A.

Three of us split just one of their seafood platters. Of course we each were hungry for more. Maybe two might be able to split it. It was tasty and very fresh. I don't usually like scallops but I really liked these ones. They weren't rubbery or extra chewy like most others I've had in the past. I enjoyed the other items too; the fish, shrimp and fries. The crab cake was a bit dry for me (then again I've never met one that wasn't). Service was quick. This place is definitely a dive-kind of place but we ate here anyways and it did the trick.

fantastic!! generous portions of great fried seafood for very reasonable price. Paid probably a third of what I would have paid at one of the many touristy seafood restaurants in the more upscale areas. and very nice proprietor. looking forward to returning.

My first time in Charleston, read the review, decided to give it a try. I ordered seafood platter, scallop platter, shrimp and wing platter. Thought I try everything since this just might be my first and last order there ( we are leaving the next day). My husband and I were so impressed with the food, we decided to get lunch from there again the next day before we head back to Chicago. I was never a scallop fan, simply because scallop is very hard to work with. Terry (the owner) did an excellent job with his scallops. The batter was just enough to keep them moist. Perfectly seasoned and fried. Dave's carry-out is a MUST to try when you are in Charleston.

What can I say other than don't judge a book by it's cover! Outstanding!!! It doesn't matter what you order, just pick something, it's ALL GOOD! And if you like, you actually can sit inside as he has a few tables now. Gotta do it! You won't be disappointed.

Great food at a great price. The fries are a little underwhelming, but the fried shimp were golden nuggets of seafood perfection. Nightly specials are excellent, but get there early because they may just run out. Highly reccomended if you're looking for authentic soul food.

As a somewhat recent convert to the veg, I crave two things: Chic Fil A chicken sandwiches and Dave's fried shrimp. Period. This place is unbelievable. So good that I almost don't want to share it. They are open until 3am, I believe, so for a long while they were our greasy food pit stop on the way home from a solid night out. Dave's is always packed on the weekends. Full of drunk frat boys, neighborhood characters, and plain old folks that know a damn good plate of shrimp and fries when they taste one. An old man or two runs the register, and if you happen to engage the fry cook in a conversation, you'll find out he's one smart guy.The neighborhood is not so savory, but it's not that bad either. The line is usually long, so when you get to the front be ready. Shrimp and fries are the way to go. With honey mustard and ketchup, please. You can either eat them in Dave's and people watch, or carry them out (they come in styrofoam either way). They're open for lunch as well, and my fiancee says it's pretty stinkin good soul food. Not much on the menu for a vegetarian, but if I do fall off the wagon...look for me at the corner of Morris and Coming St.

It may be a hole-in-the-wall seafood fry place surrounded by some fancy pubs and popular hang-out spots, yet that's an awesome 4.5-star joint when I want food that can fill my stomach with one (1) single $20-bill in my pocket. Dave's Carry-Out is probably the most affordable, unpretentious, and down-to-earth in downtown Charleston. As a street-savvy Chicagoan, I have no problems with walking into a cage-filled building or a run-down shack on a regular basis. In addition, their Yelp rating should help cast all your anxiety away because the fried seafood at Dave's was as legit as it could be. Hubby and I walked in and felt right immediately. The two (2) young men who worked there (assuming one of them was that famous Dave) were very chill and friendly. We ordered the shrimps & scallops and seafood platter for $26. These two (2) combos also came with fries. Everything, like most similar-style joints, was made-to-order with their southern charm. The stuffed crab from the seafood platter was delicious. That certainly stood out in the crowd. Nevertheless, all other goodness had the right amount of breading and flavoring. The only minor complaint was that the temperature of the freshly-fried seafood melted the styrofoam as we were transporting it by foot back to our hotel a couple blocks away. Mama J. has a styrofoam-phobia, so she ensured that I would bring this up in my review. Now you all know there's a way to tour downtown Charleston frugally without spending a fortune.

Save $6 for after getting your king st. drunk on, and make your way to Dave's. Otherwise, feel free to get non-consensually buggered for atmosphere and a hot server. If value is what you are looking for, Dave's fish sandwich is only $5! Do tip that spare buck because you're a drunk asshole, and this is a very generous serving of bread & fish that will feed the multitude.

After almost two years of living in Charleston, I finally made it to this Charleston Institution and only wish I discovered it sooner. Dave's son Terry is one passionate dude, slinging food like crazy from morning until night with his mother. A kind of dedication that he said only allows him 3 hours of sleep a night- all out of a desire to keep his families tradition alive. Although extremely busy, he gives every customer personalized attention, a task not easy to do. I went on a weekday night and ordered the $3 Deviled Crab, $5 Fried Pork and $3 Limas & Rice. The Crab is combined with bread crumbs, sautéed vegetables and seasonings and fried, served in the shell. Although delicious, I couldn't help but wish their was more crab meat to filing ratio. The Limas & Rice were particularly amazing- huge in portion and served with bits of meaty goodness. If you are looking for a quick and inexpensive place to grab greasy & satisfying Seafood or Soul Food in Charleston, this is your spot. I recommend getting your order to-go, as their name suggests, with only a few small tables located inside. I can't wait to go back again for their Fried Fish or weekly lunch specials like BBQ Ribs, Turkey Wings or Cornish Hen.

not much to look at, but you get bang for your buck with quality and quantity. I sent a friend visiting from Ohio for some good old Southern food and a little taste of the local culture. it was hilarious... to me anyway. He said he walked up and told the lady he just wanted some fish on a bun (no condiments) and she whipped her head around and told him "son, does this look like burger King to you? We aint' got no buns. You get fish on 2 pieces of white bread... the way I serve it" lol. It's good food.

Found this hole-in-the-wall thanks to Yelp!! My husband and I are dying to get back here!! The shrimp was made to order and the deviled crab was amazing. And for both of us it was under $20! That's about 10-12 shrimp and a HUGE order of fries. The cocktail sauce has a slight kick and it is amazing.

There were a few things we had in mind for lunch today: cheap and greasy, preferably local, and Southern! We found Dave's Carry Out on Yelp and figured we would give it a try. It was what we were looking for and definitely was satisfying. My friend got fried salmon with some yellow rice and cole slaw while I got the ribs with green beans and cole slaw - both very good and quite nice for the $6.75 we paid for it. I wouldn't suggest eating in since it is a small hole in the wall and you'll probably feel like grease afterwards. It definitely was a filling $6.75; I only wish that the ribs were a bit more flavorful and even the fried salmon had a bit more body but I'm happy with what I paid for and felt the real southern living in the meal :]

  • Helen D.

Based on these yelp reviews telling me this is a hole in the wall, I expected a tiny space with a counter and 2 stools. This, people, is not a hole in the wall. Sure it's small and it's not quite a restaurant, but holes do not have the space for TV and a bathroom! Come to NYC to see what I'm talking about. Now for the food, we got the fried seafood platter with fish, scallops, shrimp, a deviled crab with red rice, and a fried fish sandwich. Everything was fresh and fried nicely, but as with most of our meals in Charleston, it was too salty. They have different lunch specials every day and it was BBQ ribs during my visit. If I wasn't set on fried seafood I would have gotten it because it looked and smelled amazing. This is a great no-frills, local place that's definitely worth checking out. It may be a little too out of the way if you're visiting without a car though. Good food, generous portions, fair prices.

I swear I wrote a review for Dave's before. Is Yelp deleting some of my reviews? Do I dream of writing reviews and remember them as fact now? What is going on!? At any rate, Dave's is a great place for cheap fried seafood. Dave (I assume that was Dave) is one of the nicest people to both new and old customers. A shrimp dinner ($8) will get you 12 large fried shrimp that are excellently seasoned and a heaping of your choice of fries or white or yellow rice. We split the entire dish and opted for the yellow rice. It definitely satisfied us without that overstuffed feeling. You have your choice of three different sauces too. Personally, the cocktail and hot sauce go really well with the shrimp. Now, if only I could get Dave to move to where I am.

I can't believe I forgot to review this place because I've been talking about it constantly since going with my father in August. My father is a big time fisherman and super picky about getting fresh fish, so he heard of this place and talked me into trying it. It's our favorite type of place, divey, but clean, inexpensive and very fresh fish. There's a very limited menu, mostly fried seafood, but all of it was very tasty. Even the side dishes were very tasty. Unfortunately, it's out of the way for me, so I haven't been back, but I think and talk about it often. If I lived downtown, I'd be there quite a bit. Even though it's called Dave' Carry-out, there are a few small tables to enjoy your meal there.

This was all I hoped for when I came to Charleston. Some good ole unhealthy fried food that would leave me feeling like I needed a nap. Well Dave's gave me exactly that... It's a hole in the wall take out joint with a few chairs and a small tv if you wanna eat there. It's a bit off the beaten path a few blocks off King street. As soon as I walked in, I knew it was gonna be good. I got an order of fried fish and shrimp that comes with fries. Took about 15 minutes to prepare it and it was worth every second. Lights out delicious.. Exactly what southern soul food is supposed to taste like. Flavorful, crispy and plentiful. Adding hot sauce only enhanced what was a perfect meal. I grabbed a seat on one of the couches and ate my food there while watching some baseball. Even hung out there for a few after I finished eating. This is THE soul food spot in Charleston. If you're looking for some good old fashioned southern fried food, look no further and bring your appetite!

Good seafood .. take out .. but has a few tables ....not expensive. Good customer service. Fast in and out ..complements this area of SC .. by the way down SC is amazingly beautiful. I have been to Bermuda and this town looks a lot like it . Enjoy!

  • Lily H.

Yes, it's salty and yes, it's bad for you but it's so delicious and I don't care. I ordered the fried scallop platter and a deviled crab for take-out. The scallops were fresh and tender. The deviled crab had good flavor but I think I got way more stuffing than crab. I've never had deviled crab before so I have nothing to compare it to but I would try it again! Apparently, Friday is collard day. I plan on going back on a Friday sometime to try them out! I also want to try the fish sandwich others have written good things about. The fries that came with the dish were standard but I'd like to try their "cup of Lima" and hopping John, too.

After a long day cold dealing with a bunch of kids I needed some down time and was looking to have a nice meal with no distractions. I was downtown and was not wanting anything fancy. I realized I was near Dave's and thought that was the perfect comfort food on this cold day. Got a parking spot right outside the door and went in and ordered the shrimp and fries dinner and a diet coke. Sat at the bar and decided I would just stay there and eat. Had a great conversation with the chef/cook/owner. What a good guy. Really made me feel welcome. And the clientele who came in were also characters and just happy to be coming by for their weekly fix at Dave's. People driving from 30 miles to get this very casual seafood plate to go. I watched as he served his loyal clients and thought I really need to come here more often. And when I got my dinner I asked whether sitting at the bar was ok and he was very gracious and welcoming. We talked throughout the meal. And the shrimp were just out of this world with their tasty tartar sauce. Sweet but not too sweet. The shrimp were fried perfectly and of real nice size. Dipping the fries in the tarter made them even better. I cannot say when I have had a better meal where I felt more at home. I do know that it made my evening and it is a few days later and I am still thinking of it and my mouth is watering just a little bit and it is just after breakfast time. I am betting it won't be that long before I go back. Will probably sit at the bar again. What a great experience!

We are not fried food fans, but Dave blew us away! We were in Charleston for a week and were looking for something that would be solid local fare. Dave's is a divey hole in the wall little place and Dave does it all. He takes the orders on the phone , and from the counter and then cooks the food and hands it out. He only has 2 tables and 2 stools at the counter. So most people carry out. I guess that why its called Dave's Carry out. We ate in. We had white fish, shrimp and scallops. All lightly breaded and fried to perfection. Not greasy and super tasty. Dave is an outgoing pleasant guy with photos of his parents and grandparents in the place, because they taught him how to work hard, according to Dave. We highly recommend Dave's for an authentic taste of Charleston. The price is right too. We rave about Dave.

Dave's is a small hometown seafood and soul food restaurant that has the right stuff. I always get the seafood platter, but the chicken wings, hooping john and red rice taste just as good. I love this place!!!

Hole in the wall location with fantastic home cookin. Had fried salmon, hopping john and cabbage. The fried crust on the salmon is amazing and the cabbage is salty and supple. The hopping john was tasty with bacon, beans and seasoned rice. If I go back, I will order a different kind of fish as I felt the flavor of the salmon wasn't that good, but was saved with the fried coating being epic. Two plates of food was $14.50 Two tables, a bar, and some no non-sense people is what you can expect in the most unexpected place.

  • Janet L.

3-1/2 Stars. A local chef recommended Dave's and it didn't disappoint. Local, friendly, corner-market vibe, Dave's was filled with neighborhood peeps grabbing lunch, mostly to go since they only have 2 tables and a couch to sit on. Crispy fried seafood is the ticket at Dave's. We had fresh fish, scallops and shrimp all lightly battered and fried to perfection. The fish sandwich was 2 generous pieces of fish, 2 slices of white bread, 2 pieces of crispy lettuce and tomato slices. Classic and delish! The fish platter was huge - 2 large pieces of fish, 6 fried shrimp and 6 fired scallops plus one deviled crab in the shell - all were lightly battered and perfectly fried.

I was skeptical of the reviews. Then I bit into the food. Absolutely amazing! That magic batter. Best fried anything. Yes, you'll be eating salads he rest of the week after eating here, but well worth the goodness of replacing every molecule of moisture in your food with fryer oil!

Will be forever thankful to Yelp for helping us find this little hidden gem. As others have stated it is not much to look at from the outside. However, as soon as you walk in you are greeted by the most delightful smell! Yes the menu is fairly small, but I believe that's what makes it so wonderful. They've chosen a few delicious items and perfected them. Plus everything is fresh and made to order. The staff was just lovely very helpful and engaging. Here's what we had: Fried Pork Sandwich- ($4.50-$6.00) A very decent sized pork chop fried in the most wonderful crust then served with white bread and fries; simple but tasty. (My mom was pretty much licking the bone and she hates pork chops!) Shrimp Platter- ($7.50) I received about 13 nice sized Shrimp fried to perfection that came with a sauce on the side. I however did not see any need for said sauce. It was just Yum! Fish Sandwich- ($4.50-$6.50) Came with 2 huge pieces of fried fish! Served with white bread a tartar sauce and fries. Overall a wonderful dining experience.

Daves is a hole in the wall spot that has really good seafood. Small menu but everything is equally as good. Whether you're looking for some home cooking or just a quick seafood fix, Dave's is the spot to go. You won't be disappointed.

It doesn't look like much from the outside or even the inside but that's what adds to the atmosphere. This is mainly for take out as there is only 2 fold out tables to sit at. The food is made fresh to order and is very good. We got the shrimp platter and the shrimp/fish platter. The shrimp are well breaded and good size. The cocktail sauce has a little spice to it. The fish is a huge piece and will fill you up. Highly recommended!

A great find thanks to other Yelpers. Thank you! I walked over after a long day at a conference at the College of Charleston to grab dinner to take back to my hotel and I am so glad I did. The fried fish & shrimp were good and the freshest I had during my visit to Charleston (that's what you get for visiting tourist dens for meals of convenience like most of my other Charleston meals turned out to be). There are a couple stools at the counter for ordering, they'll pass you a copy of the menu, and then you just wait for your order and watch people come and go. Alll tasty food from a local business, so give it your support.

Absolutley love this place! When your looking for some good seafood this is the place to go to. Lived in charelston my whole life and this is still my favorite Seafood Resturant around the area. You cant beat the Seafood Platter. If your in charleston and are cravin Seafood I would highly recommend this place. Been going for 8 years and wont stop anytime soon.

I went to Dave's for the first time today for lunch, and met Ms. Sandra. She cooked up a fresh fried Shrimp and Fish platter for me that certainly hit the spot. The red rice is plentiful and pleasant. The seafood was tasty and fresh. I also enjoyed chatting with Ms. Sandra while she prepared our food. I will be back for sure!

I like to stop at Dave's to remind me what southern food is all about. It's about some dudes standing around a fryer cooking up some amazingness. Dave's Carry-Out awesome down home fried goodness with all the favorites: Fried Shrimp, Fish Sandwiches, Chicken Wings, OMG! Definitely call your order in ahead of time if you don't like the idea of waiting in a very small, very dingy establishment. Or get over yourself and embrace the soul food experience, chat it up with the staff and watch the 13-in rabbit ears tube in the corner. Parking is not super accessible, so be ready to pop in and pop out, or walk a few blocks. They are closing for lunch these days, so check to make sure they are open.

After trying to get to 2 other places that had killer wait times we opted for carry out! Great decision! The fish & shrimp were great! Not many reviews for this place it doesn't need them because the business it does is by locals word of mouth! The menu may be limited at times but don't let that stop you if you want good fish and shrimp. We have since learned it's been written up by various media. I also did a write up wp.me/p43oJF-5y Its well worth the visit!

I love finding places like this. It's a complete hole in the wall. Don't take that the wrong way though, it's very clean but the ambiance is a walk up counter to put in your order and a small table with a couple chairs. The shrimp and scallops were super seafood satisfaction. The staff is the perfect picture of old school southern hospitality and they combine that with no frills seafood to go. The breading on the shrimp and scallops was light and browned to perfections. Fast, fresh, and quality seafood isbeing done right at Dave's.

Since everyone is always raving about how awesome the seafood is here, I felt the need to give props to my man--the pork chop. I've been eating at Dave's for about 2 years now, and it never disappoints. Whether it's 10 at night or for lunch, the food is awesome. I'm not a fan of seafood so my go-to menu item is the fried pork chop sandwich. It's that perfect combination of crunchy, greasy, and super tasty. Served with a side of fries and on two slices of white bread- it's simple but delicious. Just make sure you watch where you bite because this ain't no boneless chop.

Oh my goodness. Fresh. Fried. Freaking awesome. The batter is perfectly seasoned so you don't even really need tartar sauce. But make sure to ask for some hot sauce to add to your shrimp. The fish was great, had a couple of bones, but no big deal. The shrimp was fresh and perfectly cooked. I'm definitely coming back here.

We were frequent fliers on a Friday night. Order the shrimp and fish and red rice. You will not be disappointed. 2 full dinners made to order for around $18! Terrance gives everyone personal attention-he knew the sound of my voice and my order when I called. We surely miss Dave's Carryout since we moved! Their chicken wings are amazing as well.

My fiancé are from out of town and we were looking for a place to pick up some tasty seafood without breaking the bank. This was a great find! The fried shrimp was by far my favorite, however the deviled crab was a close second! For a large quantity of tasty shrimp that is cooked to order I am not sure you could find a better option in the area for the price, for two shrimp and fish platters with one side each and a deviled crab the gran total was $22.00.

This place is a hole in the wall dive with some great seafood. We got a combo platter with fish and shrimp and it was pretty awesome. Be aware the fish has some bones in it which was no problem for us but you might be thrown off if you're not expecting it. Open late so a great place to hit after the bars!

Great food. Good and filling and no frills. We called ahead and it was ready when we got there. Warning, the wings are huge!

This place is top-notch for fried seafood and pork chops. We had the seafood sampler platter and a pork chop sandwich with tartar sauce and cocktail sauces on the side. Omg it was all SO good. And it didn't feel too heavy. I know it was ;) but it was cooked so perfectly and wasn't very greasy even after taking it back to our hotel. The guy cooking (maybe Dave?) was also very nice. Everyone we met while traveling in South Carolina was so nice. We are from San Diego and feel like the people are so much sweeter in general in the deep south. What a great change. Thanks for the yummmmyyyy meal :)

    - Here you go, fish sandwich. Extra tarter sauce is in the box. - I like that 'extra tarter sauce' is the standard. - Well some people love their sauce. Some people just like to savor the fish with no sauce at all. It doesn't matter to me either way. I do

One of if not THE best meal I had in Charleston. One review I read said simple but righteous and they had it on the money. There's only two small tables and some stools at the counter and a TV in the corner constantly on but you don't come here for the ambiance. I had the seafood platter which came with lightly fried scallops, whole whiting fillet and shrimp and stuffed soft shell crab that is the best I've ever tasted. Well worth the $13, one is enough for two. Next time I am in Charleston Dave's will be my first stop.

How is there only one review for Dave's. Dave's is by far the BEST FRIED SEAFOOD I HAVE EVER EATEN!!! I am not kidding. i love this place. not just because you can get it when you are drunk after a night out, but because the food is so fresh. and the tartar sauce is so good. and the people are so nice, and the place has such character. its just the best thing since sliced bread. i crave dave's. i am in london right now and i just had fish and chips (isn't this what they are known for) and all it made me think was how much i miss Dave's! This was where i took my family after my graduations (yeah we don't do that whole fancy dinner thing). and $13 for a massive box of seafood is pretty good. ahh the crab cake. and scallops. and shrimp. sooo good.

This is definitely an eat it and beat it type place. Really a to-go place. There is never anywhere to park around there so just park illegally and get it to go so you don't have to stay long. I got the shrimp basket and it was pretty standard. I can't say it was the best I've ever had for the price. The price did seems fair but I didn't care for the yellow rice at all. It was boring and flavorless. This is a place I just wanted to get my food and leave.

The best place to get late night food and hell the fried fish is better than anyplace the tourists go. And you can get it at like 1am. Awesome. I've been going for over 10 years (and a location change) now and never has Dave's disapointed!

Great fried seafood, but way overpriced for the small portions you receive. The two old men at the counter only act as cashiers. They make the poor cook, T., do all the work, even when they are swamped with CofC students and the locals at their peak early morning hours.

This place was a lot less shady than I was expecting. Lots of windows, 2 tables, and 1 bench. The fried seafood platter came with a few scallops, ~5 shrimp, 1 soft-shell crab, and a huge filet, all crammed into a styro box. Fried goodness and decent for $13. The side of hoppin john was huge. They also have non-seafood specials that looked tasty. It's a hit with the locals, so you know it's good.

Great drunk food - it's fried, fast, and cheap. It's funny because Dave doesn't eat seafood at all. At least he knows how to make it right for tired souls after a night of drinking.

Saw the reviews on Yelp. All seemed good, so I decided to follow up and see for my self. OMG! This is a little hole in the wall place that has some of the best fried seafood I have had in a long time. If you like fried seafood, shrimp, fish, scallops, you won't go wrong here. And it is what is say's it is a "carry out" place. But a must if you visit Charleston, SC

We were visiting Charleston and looking for good fried seafood. Thanks to Yelp, I found Dave's. And I am so glad we did! The best fried fish and shrimp I have ever had! It is a little hole in the wall - not much on atmosphere. But the food is worth it! I wish Dave's was closer to home!
