Came here for desert ! Had the carrot cake and the red velvet , both were on point. Ordered some vanilla ice cream on the side. Was $5 for one small scoop of ice cream . Other than that everything was great. We will be back when craving something sweet .

Stopped in this place after dinner. I was too full to try a dessert or one of the drunken milkshakes, but definitely want to come back for one. Everything looked delicious. Appreciated that they offer almond milk for the cappuccino. You could tell some customers were coming into start their night out with a quick drink, while others this was their last stop. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

When your deserts are winning awards life is good. Gorgeous building. Great air conditioning. And stellar deserts. Food served as well.

Carmella's is a quiet, elegant little cafe on East Bay street. They feature a wide range of coffee options and some fun cocktails, and hit a home run with the "drunken shakes" that are exactly what they sound like. I loved the old exposed brick and industrial lighting that create the quiet, elegant, pseudo-industrial look of the interior here. (I know, sounds like a contradiction in terms) Seems like the perfect date spot, where you can downshift from a cocktail to coffee if your date is getting saucy or if you need to reign it in, a bit. Lots of comfortable seating and high top bars, and the staff is friendly. (One even offered advice about the cobblestones outside, and where its a trip hazard) Great spot.

Went in on a busy Friday night during Memorial Day weekend for a sweet treat after an amazing meal at Cypress. My first impression of the little place is that I love the open concept with the doors opened to the road with seating outside. The bar area is lovely as well as the rest of the dining area. It is slightly tight maneuvering around the tables in the center to reach the dessert case to view their options but their desserts do look great once you get there. After peeking at their case we decided to take a seat to enjoy our dessert there. A server came to greet us and we placed our order for their Rum Cake right away to share. All their desserts looked tempting, from carrot cake, coconut cake, chocolate cake, several flavored mouses, brownies, etc. but we were in the mood for something new. The cake was moist, light and had a subtle taste of rum but the frosting was my favorite. It wasn't your typical buttercream but rather a whipped frosting, not dense or overly sweet, just perfect for the cake. The dusting chopped walnuts on the side added a great textural eliminate as well! And it's the perfect size for sharing, if you choose! Very happy that we ended the night their on such a sweet note.

BEAUTIFUL atmosphere. Appreciated the layout and variety. They had GF treat options too! According to friends, the cupcakes were subpar but the panna cotta was amazing. And the boozy coffee & shakes were fantastic.

Super cool place - the desserts were yummy and the ambience can't be beat. They serve desserts and alcoholic drinks - super cool!

Had a chocolate puff and chocolate martini-enjoyed them both. Loved the ambiance. Took a double stuffed cookie to go-it wasn't very moist but flavor was good

For a long time, Kaminsky's was the only true dessert/cocktail after dinner place to relax and enjoy a sweet or two. Now we have a much needed additional right on the heart of Market and East Bay area. Carmella's is designed to fit the high end traditional French Quarter look and feel of Charleston. With a deep menu of wine, ice wine, sparkling wine, cocktails, coffee drinks, ice cream, gelato and wonderful homemade pastries, this establishment offers a romantic and casual setting. With a unisex bathroom decorated with color manipulation photography, a French decor, spacious seating and a blend of bar and dessert, this is the perfect place for a small group, first date or end of the evening relaxation. Whether you want pistachio mouse, red velvet cake or a chocolate covered strawberry, you can meet all your sweet tooth needs. We had a hot chocolate, coffee, strawberry and two scoops of ice cream and it was perfect. Pastries are between $7.00 - $9.00. Wine and cocktails or $10.00 - $15.00 and Ice cream / gelato is between $5.00 - $7.00. A true Charleston experience.

What neat concept! Dessert bar with booze. My boyfriend was craving something sweet and I wanted a strong drink so this literally was the perfect compromise. He ordered an adult milkshake with pancake bacon gelato and Kahula and Chocolate Vodka. We came back again and I tried the regular chocolate milkshake and it was perfect. Friendly service and clean decor.

This review is just for the bar service and friendly bar staff as we haven't had the pleasure of eating there...YET. We arrived at about 4:30 on a Thursday afternoon, parched after a day of hoofing it around Charleston. We sat at the bar which was the only available seats to be had at the moment. We were greeted immediately by our super friendly bartender, Heather, who served us our Peronis with a smile and chatted us up about the joys of having moved to Charleston. My husband made a comment about the "bacon and pancake gelato" on the menu and she immediately got him a taste spoon so he could try a sample. The people watching and fresh breeze in this open air spot were wonderful and as the tour groups left and people headed out and back to their respective hotels to freshen up for dinner we found that we were still sitting there at the bar just enjoying being in the moment. For those that don't know me, this is a feat worthy of grand applause and several "oohs"and "aahs". The menu looked wonderful--paninis and sandwiches and a la carte charcuterie platters. We asked and learned that they do have take out service. We will be back tomorrow to pick up some prosciutto sandwiches to take on a picnic on the pier.

We stopped here for dessert on our vacation to Charleston. It is a great place for wine and cheese or desserts. We had the salted caramel gelato and white chocolate mousse. It was delicious!

My friends and I stumbled across this place and it has such a beautiful ambience - great music which really made my day. Good brunch place, the paninis are AMAZING. I got the Turkey panini and it came with a touch of Fig sauce which made it very unique! We ended our brunch with dessert - the Hazelnut mousse with a special touch of brownie at the bottom which was so satisfying.

Great idea for that little extra after dinner nosh. Skip the dessert at the restaurant , and drop in here for fresh pastries and baked goods made daily. We had the creme puff and peanut butter delight and they were outstanding.

Excellent location people watching service and gelato. We had the peppermint pattie and the sea salt caramel gelato. Heavenly. Worth the expensive price tag. Peanut butter inspired deserts looked heavenly. We will be back!

I would give it 5 stars but this place ain't cheap so the price knocked it down a star. We had coffee drinks spiked with delish liquors and my friends and I got 1 dessert each and split it. I can't say I was a fan of the chocolate eclairs but I am a bit of a eclair snob since they are my favorite dessert. The peanut butter explosion was sinful and amazing. As was the red velvet. A must try desert bar. Great for a date too!

On February 8, 2015 at approximately 1625 hours I, Dante G., responded to Carmella's located at 198 East Bay Street, which is in the city of Charleston, in reference to an investigative follow up. Recently, I experienced Kaminsky's with Jordan C., also located in Charleston. In speaking with others, I learned of Carmella's. It was described to me as a lower key Kaminsky's for locals. I entered through the A side of the building, which had multiple entry points. I moved to the center of the business, along the counter, and made my order. I then sat near the register. I ordered a Charleston Organic Blend Coffee and chocolate cake. I had chocolate cake from Kaminsky's, so I was hoping to compare the two. The coffee was tasty. I am no coffee connoisseur, but it did not make me wince when I drank it. I did add one raw sugar. The chocolate cake was a little cake, not a slice. i liked that. It was also a smaller portion. Which I also liked. As much as I eat, I need to watch those calories. The cake was super moist and the icing was sweet, but not too sweet. It was actually perfect for me. The atmosphere was awesome as well. There was only one other person in there, a female cougar. I do not mean a Puma Concolor, either. The other patron was very occupied on her phone until the young man behind the counter came out of the back. She perked up and I suddenly felt like I had a front seat to Wild Kingdom. The small talk, the "where are you from" discussion. I almost laughed out loud when she was talking and made a slip about "talking to her kids" and immediately changed it to "talking to a friend about her kids". Too funny. I finished my order and departed. End of Report.

I'm not really sure how to feel. The spot is absolutely adorable, but it wasn't lively. Like it didn't feel like it was open. It's a gorgeous, hopping day and there are no lights on and only one employee in sight who is partly frosting cakes / playing cashier / bartender. I just am surprised there is no one else here. The dessert wasn't bad, but not fabulous either. I will give it another try in the evening and will give an updated review, maybe it becomes alive at night?

  • Kristen B.

Stopped here for dessert and it was pretty good. I had the tiramisu which was good but extremely rich. It was almost like cream cheese frosting on the top. My friend had the death by chocolate spiked milkshake. I thought it was a little pricey for the small glass it comes in. It also wasn't as good as I thought it would be. When we got there around 10:30 pm there were only a few people there but by 11 it started getting uncomfortably packed. It was something to try but I probably wouldn't go back.

Best place in downtown Charleston to chill with something cold & sweet and get out of the heat for awhile. We tried the Italian ices - strawberry lemonade and Margarita - cold and flavorful, nice balance of sweet and tart, and not expensive. Atmosphere was rustic urban meets french country and the staff was great.

This is a nice place, cozy and laid back. Good vegetarian food, kids food is great as well. Not a big fan of their drinks, but overall a nice place.

  • Frank G.

The key here is "in time". Wife and I stopped in, the 2 ladies are very nice, but... I asked it they had Jose Curevo, she looked in the beer section! Wife asked for one of their advertised ice creams, said not ready yet, but was listed on the board. The desserts look good but way over priced. For the prices they want, the desserts should be bigger and top notch. Like I said, in time, they will get it together, and I will go back. It seems that it could be a great Cafe. Frank G

Carmella's is just getting up and going. During my visit, they were still figuring a few things out. However, I had a good drink here and excellent service. The ladies behind the bar were both gracious and attentive. This is a great spot for an afternoon drink or a snack. In time, this may be a go-to kind of place for the area. The location is prime as well.

Ordered pistachio tart and mini coconut cake from display. Very good! Pistachio was unique and I liked it best. Coconut was good but I've had better...didn't have the sweetened condensed milk outside like I'm used to and prefer.

  • Amber G.

We stopped in here after dinner somewhere else. I ordered the chocolate martini, which was truly a chocolate martini and not an espresso martini with creme de cocoa tossed in. I was very happy. It was so yummy! My 2 friends each got the chocolate side car and were not impressed. The bartender was happy to replace them though and agreed that it was a very particular taste. Great service. We also had the almond cake...omg! It was light and fluffy and oh so good! We will definitely be back.

Ok first for the positive: cute atmosphere, Open air great location. The gelato and specialty drinks were a little pricy but good $5/$9. Staff was friendly. Negatives: watched 5 different groups of individuals come in wait to be acknowledged and leave. They are missing out on so much business due to being understaffed and not efficient. It took forever 20 minutes to get our orders taken and an additional 15 To receive our 3 coffee drinks. It took and additional 20 to get our checks which weren't correct. Operationally this place needs better systems so that they can keep customers.

It was quiet when my husband and I came in. Adorable place! We were promptly served and had the pleasure of watching desserts being made, which I found enjoyable. They even gave us a sample of the brownies - YUM!

This is where the people that work food and bev go. Amazing bar with great people working. Everything on the menu is amazing. Hands down my favorite place to grab drinks and some quick food in Charleston. The desserts here are top notch and everything is very affordable. One of the most underrated places on East Bay.

Cute, apothecary style dessert bar. The playlist was Fun, and surprisingly heavy on 90s hip-hop album cuts. Drinks were decent. I tried the Penicillin: Glen livet12yr, domain De canton, honey, lemon juice. Great choice for people not looking for a sundae in a glass. Also tried the hanky lanky, with gin, vermouth and internet branch. Much more herb-y, but not as flavor-forward or tasty.

My husband and I enjoyed some late night dessert. The dessert was good but not to die for. The ambiance is great but the customer service was next to none. We could have ordered drinks but the waitress was no where to be found. We still enjoyed ourselves because of the ambiance.

Cute little cafe with desserts, ice cream, gelato, speciality coffee, teas, and adult beverages. Very cozy atmosphere and attentive staff. The clean and modern design is very appealing. Great for a date or laid back moment with friends.

Great idea and location, horrible execution and experience. The food was amazing as was the decor. My girlfriend had a white chocolate mouse cup that was out of the world. That's about where it stopped however. We had to stop a server to ask if we needed to seat ourselves (normally no biggie) but after about 10 minutes we got up and ordered at the bar. When we placed our order they even asked what that was. We told them it was on their menu. I ordered a cherry coke float with chocolate ice cream. The 1st one they brought was a chocolate milkshake. The 2nd one didn't have chocolate ice cream. At this point the other 2 people in my group were halfway done and I didn't want to even bother with it. I give the 3 based off the decor and the mouse cup alone. We will give it a second chance I'm sure at some point.

Found this place last week when my friends came into town. So glad we stopped in. We all got different cocktails and I had the tiramisu shake!! It was to die for!! Also had there desserts. We had a chocolate chip cookie however was not your ordinary cookie it had a Oreo and peanut butter cup in the middle of it! The quality of this establishment is like no other! Please support this wonderful establishment!! I will definitely be back!

I was not too impressed by this place. Love the design, and the wine case on the wall. I have visited this establishment three times now, I have ordered the same alcoholic chocolate shake, and have gotten a different taste every time. Seems to be an inconsistent recipe, or bartenders. The desserts in the case look old. I ordered a sugar cookie one evening, and it was stale. My last visit, the bartender did not seem too interested in helping us, was more interested in the other girl working with him. Might return, might not.

Peanut Butter explosion and White Chocolate Mousse Cake were awesome! I highly recommend it to one and all. Service was great too.

  • Kevin S.

The wife and I tried a lemon cake and the peanut butter explosion (I think was the name) and the wife had some kind of coffee thing. I don't like coffee and don't pay attention and couldn't tell you anything about it. As for the desserts, they're served beautifully and raise your expectations. "Wow, this is going to be amazing," you think to yourself. Maybe it is for some people. We were unable to finish the two desserts and it didn't really make us sad. I left with a feeling of being overloaded with sugar but not overloaded with flavor. They're not necessarily heavy (the lemon cake is very light, actually, but then loaded down with way too much frosting that has no flavor) but they're not satisfying. We won't return.

A taste of great Philadelphia desserts just blocks from Philadelphia Alley. He has the mocha cheesecake, rich and creamy, and I had a delicious cocktail milkshake. After a chat about iconic Philly cannoli, the owner presented one of his. Ricotta-based and divine! A dessert bar is a brilliant idea too.

My husband and I stumbled upon this place while killing time before our massages down the street. While the sandwich was a basic turkey sandwich with jam it was one of the best turkey sandwiches we've ever had. We each had a drink and my pina colada tini was absolutely delicious. My husband had a Johnny Walker Black on the rocks and they did not cheat him on the drink. When they found out we were on our honeymoon they gave us a little treat as well. We loved this spot so much we came back the next night for an after dinner drink and it was just as great.

Great location and deserts but ask for the cost before you order specialty drinks. After a great dinner and walking through the city we were pulled into this open air street bar. The selection of pastries were very excellent and it made you very glad you did not order desert at dinner. When the bill arrived we had the shock of the night, $45 bucks for two coffee drinks and one desert. We complained to the manager and he realized right away that this was right and fixed the bill. Thanks in part to this guy and his professionalism this place is surely going to do well. So we definitely think you need to pay this place a late night visit as you traverse the city.

The amount of sadness that I feel towards the fact I live four hours away and cant visit every day to dive face deep in what they call a Chocolate Bomb, can only equate to what a whale would feel like not being in water.

Sadly my review will not be good. I stopped in for a quick lunch. I ordered a panini. I was skeptical when the cook pulled a premade panini from the cooler. What I was served was not hot but barely warm. To say it was dry and unflavorful is being kind. The deserts looked good and that is what I probably should have had.

This review is ONLY about the cakes and service. We stopped by this store just want to get some cake as the reviews are not bad. First of all, all cakes here are over priced but we totally understand. We ordered tiramisu - 8 bucks for a very small slice of it. Apparently it is not authentic tiramisu at all (usually the base is made of lady fingers soaked in liquor). Most important, it is not freshly made. The cheese layer is half dry and it seems to be made the day before. The owner (a lady in her 50s) is very unfriendly to us. Probably because we just ordered one slice of cake to go.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
