    We gave it another try after our previous disappointing visit and it really wasn't that much better. I ordered the brisket hash which had excellent flavors and would have been five stars had it not been for me setting aside half the brisket because they were cubes of 100% fat. What a waste. Our guests enjoyed their tacos but commented on the small portions for the price. That's never really bothered me because I don't eat much at one sitting (partially true!). The drinks were top notch and the service was friendly. I just can't get past the quality control issues coming out of the kitchen.

    This area is up and coming, but it still has a way to go. Stopped in for lunch, so so. Staff did not seem eager to serve you. Food is OK. Places is nice and up to to date. Prices a slightly higher then most, but that is due to the trendy customers. They will get tired soon of the prices. There is so much more out there. They really have to step up their game, since now it's the only one there. The area pool is nice and the housing is also very nice. Frank G

    This place falls right in with the rest of Mixon. On the hip(ster) side, but just get over it because the food is really good. The ambiance is neat. Very bright and light. Waiters in shorts and metal chairs and simple cups and plates. You feel relaxed just walking in. Chill out and ignore the high prices, this is Mixon, you shouldn't expect anything less. Don't worry, the food is worth it. Mexican street corn here is amazing (it is only on the lunch menu). Period. I've had them all and the is is the best in Charleston as far as I'm concerned. The rest of the sides are thoughtfully prepared and presented. The small menu is just enough to satisfy anyone. The chicken soup is a great option that isn't always on the menu, so make sure to ask if they have it. Overall I go 4 starts because it's a tad pricy and a little slow for a lunch stop. A neat spot to go have a cool experience with friends or a date.

    Paying purely for the "hip" atmosphere. Food used to be good, but they keep changing up their menu, the Trio salsa used to be the bomb now they charge $6.00 for a handful of burnt chips and two small cup of salsa.

    Stay away! My wife and I tried Basico about a year ago. We were highly disappointed. We decided to go back this evening with friends to give it a second chance. Unless you are a twenty-something neophyte, stay away. They have nothing to appeal to the foodie, the wine enthusiast, or the liquor enthusiast (however I did see a fair selection of tequilas, hence the twenty-something remark). Our service was mediocre. The server nor the bartender could tell us what bourbons they offered (a cardinal sin in my book). Drinks were ordered and, I have to admit, the two ladies in our party enjoyed their two different specialty margaritas. For the bourbon aficionado, stay away. They only had Jim Beam and Bullitt. However, the bartender did try to pass off Jack Daniels as a bourbon! As for apps, we ordered the Queso Fundito and the Pico de Gallo. The chips served with both were fresh and appeared to be house made. However, they were SALTY!!! The Queso was good. The pico was very good, however, we were given approximately 2-3 ounces in a SMALL stainless steel ramekin. The amount we were served was about half the size of a normal salsa dish at a Mexican restaurant (which is given free of charge and we had to pay for the pico). The portion size was ridiculous. Only two of the four of us ordered entrees. We both ordered tacos. We tried all three offered: fish, chicken, and al pastor. They were served ala carte, no sides. The chicken was ok. The fish was fried, way over done, with no flavor in the fish, the crema, or the bland green cabbage served on top. As far as the al pastor, I was disappointed most of all. My wife and I fell in love with tacos al pastor while in Merida, Mexico. We have been trying to find tacos as good here locally. I can honestly say, these are not the ones we were looking for. This taco was SO bad, I didn't even finish it. We live close to Basico and have been hoping that it would be a place we could frequent, however, our recommendation is to stay away. There is much better folks, drinks, and service only a short distance away over on East Montague.

    This was a difficult place to find. We get here for lunch and was seated immediately and ask what we wanted to drink. We order Salsa Trio. (We are not fans when restaurants charge for chips and salsa unless it's worth it or the price is reasonable.) Within minutes a nice lady came to take our order and thankfully ahead of a couple of bigger tables that came in right after we were seated. We ordered the taco plates and a Pacifico on Draught. We got some chips and salsa but it wasn't the Salsa Trio we ordered. Intrigued since so other table had a Salsa Trio we wanted to ask our server but she had disappeared for what seemed like a long time but it wasn't. Our entrees came out and we asked our server about the Pacifico and if what we got was in place of the Salsa Trio we ordered. No that's just the start. Let me say the food is really good and it's tacos so food came out quickly. We were only in there for an hour but all the waiting for the Pacifico and it took and yes I timed it 11 minutes for us to pay the tab. She was nice enough not to charge us for the chips and salsa and the Pacifico without any provocation from us. This is a really nice place and the food is top notch. One hour was a reasonable time to have lunch but our lunch could have possibly been only 35 mins from entrance to exit versus waiting for a beer and to pay our tab.

    There are some places worth the drive from downtown to Park Circle and some that just aren't. After experiencing both brunch and dinner at Basico, I found the food to be among the best North Charleston has to offer. The cuisine is much more authentic than Americanized like I was expecting, with options like fresh chips, unique tacos, killer quesadillas and great craft cocktails, many of which are made with coconut water. I love that fresh chips and salsa come complimentary to your table to start, but think ordering a unique kind of salsa off the menu for $3 each is worth it to share with the table- the mango and smoked walnut are my two favorites! For dinner, two tacos for $8 or three for $11 is a great option. The tacos are simplistic but filled with unique condiments that elevate them from good to awesome- like the habenero crema on the baja fish taco and yellow mole on the brisket taco. The street corn is also not to be missed, topped with tons of cilantro and salty cotija cheese. For brunch, I love to split salsa with the table and order one of the hash plates- like the brisket with pimento gravy that cures a case of whatever fun you had the night before. Basico isn't your typical Mexican restaurant. The food is much more refined than your typical taco platter with rice and beans.     I think this is a great little find in N. Charleston... Kinda right off the HWY, so we always swing by on the way back to Columbia! Love, love, love Mixson Market, the concept is awesome (farmers market, apartments, pool, modern homes, market etc). We've been on Saturday both times, around 4pm/5pm and we've always had the outside seating area to ourselves... it's quiet and low-key despite the pool being around the corner. The menu is different which appealed to us... not the standard boring Mexican fare you'd normally find at chain "local" restaurants in the south (don't want to name drop). I've had tacos (all non-meat) and the enchiladas for entrees and the guac, cheese dip, and chorizo queso for apps... The star for me is the GUACAMOLE... so fresh with a little kick. If you're in Charleston (or on your way out), you should swing by!

    Basico is what I refer to as "fancy Mexican". Their prices are above your standard basic Mexican/Tex-Mex food, although the tacos are decently priced. That being said, happy hour prices are good and they make a great margarita. I got the chicken nachos, as they were $6 instead of the usual $11 during happy hour. They are pretty big and more than enough for one person. The chips tasted excellent as did most of the toppings. The chicken was kind of flavorless on its own. You can get chorizo as well, which I would try if I got them again in hopes of a little more flavor. Also, the dining room isn't huge so it's probably not ideal for larger groups, but they have nice outdoor space.

    Staff here is incredibly friendly. All of their corn tortillas are house made and the food is delicious. A little off the beaten path of Park Circle, Basico is a nice little place in the Mixson Market. After only going a few times the staff remembers our names and treats us like family. The salsas are all very good and their tacos are awesome. My favorite is the Hot Chicken tacos and the Al Pastor tacos. The venue is a descent size and they have room for large groups. They're draft beer selection is a little small, but they have all the local 'usual suspects' in the cooler. My favorite being Westbrook IPA and Holy City Uncomfortably Friendly IPA. I highly recommend checking out Basico. Lunch time is never too busy and the service is always great.

    My first and only experience with Básico thus far has been during brunch. I heard these guys were doing some unique stuff for brunch and I was not disappointed. They have a pretty delicious bowl of eggs and chorizo hash that will cure any hangover after an exciting Saturday night. They also have a great beer selection(which also helps). I really loved the chicken and churros though; definitely recommend!

    There is nothing BASICo about it! The food is great, the space is unique, there's a nacho cheese waterfall, and their drinks are delicious. Fine, one of those isn't true but dreams are what keep us young. I'll see my waterfall someday. I've tried almost everything on the menu and I have yet to be disappointed. It is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the North Charleston area.

    Only two stars because of the Service. Food was great but the service was lacking. I am new to the area from the west coast so I was craving some yummy street tacos. The tacos and salsa were the best part of the experience. The restaurant is located in Mixon Racquet Club so the atmosphere is quaint. I will post up some pictures for you to view. If you are not a resident then you get to sit on a different side of there restaurant giving you the full "back of the bus ambiance". My waitress ripped the menu out of my hands after I ordered my tacos I had to ask for the menu again so I could look at the salsa list. There were two ladies and a gentlemen up front working they all had their noses up so far in the air it almost pained them to have a conversation with me. The cooking staff were the friendliest of all as they greeted me with smiles as they passed. The food was expensive but I am sure you can tell from my picture displaying the carafe of water (million dollar idea ) I just knew that little soda bottle was going to make my experience so much more valuable. Alas when I thought the whole experience was lost a local came in she was immediately greeted by the gentleman with a hug and the waitress I was trying to engage in conversation to tell me more about the racquet club was diluted to um... Umm... Ummm as she watched the lady in the corner of her eye wanting to get over to her as soon as she could. Is this place for real? Is my patronage to this establishment really that invaluable?

    When I went here the first thing I noticed was that it was a really well designed spot and had a very nice, clean atmosphere. It's all white inside and very spacious and bright. We did have a hard time finding it, it's a little bit hidden and in a random area. We went for Brunch on a Sunday, and so I got the chilaquiles. They were very good, but overpriced. I kind of assumed with the atmosphere that the food would be, but chilaquiles are something your momma makes you for breakfast with the leftover, stale tortillas. But -- obviously, this Mexican food isn't "homestyle". The portions are kind of small, as other have mentioned, but overall I think the taste and atmosphere made up for it. Really good sides as well!

    I love the concept of this place. Bath and racquet club restaurant in an up and coming neighborhood doing Mexican food differently. The drink are great, atmosphere is easy going and food is good. Overall I think this is a great little spot.

    We went for Cinco de Mayo dinner, they were busy and the service was non-existent until the Rock Star server Jordan rescued the experience for us. She was efficient, helpful, cheerful despite the stress and made it all better. The food was wonderful but the whole evening would have tanked but for Jordan. Thank you!

    Good: 1) modern and contemporary ambience. 2) clean and hygienic restroom 3) ample parking Bad: 1) Poor vegetarian choices 2) under seasoned and insipid tasting food 3) Average service FYI: I'm ovo-lacto-vegetarian. I did not try their drink menu but on the whole it was a very underwhelming experience. If this place is going to make it in the competitive charleston restaurant-scape by claiming to offer modern interpretations of traditional Mexican offerings - the taste of the food needs a lot of work!

    This little place luckily served up some good food! My husband and I decided to try them out one night for Charleston Restaurant Week and upon entering we seated ourselves right away. The decor is nice although suffering from an identity crisis in my opinion. The feel inside is very beachy and airy but the menu offers Mexican fair. It is still very nice, just wasn't the decor I expected from a Mexican restaurant. The service however was very slow, both in front of the house and the kitchen. We ordered the queso blanco dip which for a cheese dip or fondue took far to long to get to our table, 20+ minutes! I will say that it was very good. The server even offered to bring additional chips so that we could try to finish. My husband and I both had enchiladas as our entrees. He had the brisket while I had the enchilada suiza. Both dishes again were worth the wait. The corn salsa alone was satisfying. The side of rice however lacked a lot of flavor and seasoning. Our entire experience there was about 1.5 hours. A bit too long for our liking but thankfully the food made it worth enough for us to consider going back again.

    Paying purely for the "hip" atmosphere. Food used to be good, but they keep changing up their menu, the Trio salsa used to be the bomb now they charge $6.00 for a handful of burnt chips and two small cup of salsa.

    First time we went was a taste tester in their back room. That was a few months ago and I've been craving their soup ever since. We were finally able to get back about 2 weeks ago and the soup did not disappoint. I could eat that chicken tortilla soup every day and never get tired - the portions were also very nice sized. I also loved my margarita's. We then split the steak and enchiladas. The steak was on the small size but cooked medium rare to perfection and very tasty. The enchiladas were very tasty when we added their homemade spicy taco sauce and there was plenty to take home for a nice lunch the next day. The atmosphere is fantastic, although the staff seemed quite scattered. Don't get me wrong, they were all wonderful but seemed to be rushing around and interrupting each other even when one of them was talking to a customer. The place was full, but it's so small and there was a bunch of staff, we couldn't figure out why they seemed scattered. That being said, it truly is a great place, great food, fun atmosphere and pleasant staff.

    We have lived in the circle for about 2 years now and have been here a few times. Usually pretty empty but the cocktails are great and the food is always pretty good. This was the first time we did the brunch and it was awesome. I had the green chili chorizo hash and my wife did the tacos. Both were great. And they know how to make a mimosa right. We usually do the madra brunch but we just decided that we are now going to rotate the 2. It was that good. Totally worth doing. Definitely worth trying if you haven't been. And if you shied away before like we did after just being OK with it after it opened. Try it again. At least do the brunch.

    Service sucks. Our server took too long to get our drinks and food because she was busy talking to her friend behind the bar. She forgot to get my grilled corn and had to be reminded. The food was okay. I had 3 tacos and grilled corn. The chorizo meat was dry and the pork was too salty. However, the chicken was good. The grilled corn was also good. With all the hype I thought this experience would be wonderful, but it was a let down! Won't go back again.

    Stay away! My wife and I tried Basico about a year ago. We were highly disappointed. We decided to go back this evening with friends to give it a second chance. Unless you are a twenty-something neophyte, stay away. They have nothing to appeal to the foodie, the wine enthusiast, or the liquor enthusiast (however I did see a fair selection of tequilas, hence the twenty-something remark). Our service was mediocre. The server nor the bartender could tell us what bourbons they offered (a cardinal sin in my book). Drinks were ordered and, I have to admit, the two ladies in our party enjoyed their two different specialty margaritas. For the bourbon aficionado, stay away. They only had Jim Beam and Bullitt. However, the bartender did try to pass off Jack Daniels as a bourbon! As for apps, we ordered the Queso Fundito and the Pico de Gallo. The chips served with both were fresh and appeared to be house made. However, they were SALTY!!! The Queso was good. The pico was very good, however, we were given approximately 2-3 ounces in a SMALL stainless steel ramekin. The amount we were served was about half the size of a normal salsa dish at a Mexican restaurant (which is given free of charge and we had to pay for the pico). The portion size was ridiculous. Only two of the four of us ordered entrees. We both ordered tacos. We tried all three offered: fish, chicken, and al pastor. They were served ala carte, no sides. The chicken was ok. The fish was fried, way over done, with no flavor in the fish, the crema, or the bland green cabbage served on top. As far as the al pastor, I was disappointed most of all. My wife and I fell in love with tacos al pastor while in Merida, Mexico. We have been trying to find tacos as good here locally. I can honestly say, these are not the ones we were looking for. This taco was SO bad, I didn't even finish it. We live close to Basico and have been hoping that it would be a place we could frequent, however, our recommendation is to stay away. There is much better folks, drinks, and service only a short distance away over on East Montague.

    Wow! Amazing food. Everything was so fresh and cooked perfectly. There were 7 of us and it's really hard to say which was my favorite. The space is small so get there early or expect a small wait. Service was great. Basically we will be back as this is going to be one of our favorite places.

    $15 for 3 tacos.. but well worth it. Comes with a side and you can mix and match. Specials of the day are interesting. Cool location, healthy servings and home made hot sauces to boot. Sides are imaginative. One of our favorite tacorita. Mixson is a very cool and upcoming hip place. More and more are offered at this clutch N. Charleston area.     Went in the other day for our 5th time. The menu has changed and the prices have all increased. Before an entree would come with a side and now it doesn't it cost $3.50 extra. I can see my self spending $16 on a small dish plus $3.50 extra for a side. I was so disappointed I let my wife and in-laws eat I refused...just as I will no longer partake in that restaurant. Lost a good customer over greed.

    Only two stars because of the Service. Food was great but the service was lacking. I am new to the area from the west coast so I was craving some yummy street tacos. The tacos and salsa were the best part of the experience. The restaurant is located in Mixon Racquet Club so the atmosphere is quaint. I will post up some pictures for you to view. If you are not a resident then you get to sit on a different side of there restaurant giving you the full "back of the bus ambiance". My waitress ripped the menu out of my hands after I ordered my tacos I had to ask for the menu again so I could look at the salsa list. There were two ladies and a gentlemen up front working they all had their noses up so far in the air it almost pained them to have a conversation with me. The cooking staff were the friendliest of all as they greeted me with smiles as they passed. The food was expensive but I am sure you can tell from my picture displaying the carafe of water (million dollar idea ) I just knew that little soda bottle was going to make my experience so much more valuable. Alas when I thought the whole experience was lost a local came in she was immediately greeted by the gentleman with a hug and the waitress I was trying to engage in conversation to tell me more about the racquet club was diluted to um... Umm... Ummm as she watched the lady in the corner of her eye wanting to get over to her as soon as she could. Is this place for real? Is my patronage to this establishment really that invaluable?

    There is nothing BASICo about it! The food is great, the space is unique, there's a nacho cheese waterfall, and their drinks are delicious. Fine, one of those isn't true but dreams are what keep us young. I'll see my waterfall someday. I've tried almost everything on the menu and I have yet to be disappointed. It is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the North Charleston area.

    I never even knew about this place- we stumbled upon it by accident. There were 4 of us. It was big, spacious and clean! It even had a cute outdoor dining area- we actually started eating inside and then decided to move outside because it was so nice out. They were so gracious to help us move. Everything was really good from the mixed cocktails to the service to the food. Prices were not bad either! ;-) My favorite was the fresh catch & the shrimp tacos along with the Mexican Street Korn :)

    I'd give this place a 4.5 (there we go with the half ratings again) stars. What a great hidden little spot in the middle of North Charleston! This place has an upscale/trendy crowd that is well suited for it's new, nautical, cantina decor. At first I thought this place was going to be a all hype because the server that first sat us didn't know what was on draft (there are only 4 or 5...and he was working behind the bar later, so it's not like he wasn't in the area to not know that). But it was all up from there! The actual server that helped us knew his stuff, was back multiple times before refills were even needed to ask, and was extremely helpful and attentive. The type that makes you want to leave a good tip. For the food. The food here is fantastic. We had the chip and salsa trip app that had a pick de gallo, a tomatillo, and a red, restaurant looking salsa. All fantastic. I'm a salsa nut, and the typical looking one here is up there with some of my favs. For an entree I got the trio of tacos (which can with a side). I opted for the catch of the day (swordfish), the fried chicken, and the carne asada. The swordfish and fried chicken were fantastic. The chicken had an orange sauce (think Asian white sauce) on it, and was cooked perfectly. Great job guys! The carne was good overall, but the meat was on the overdone side for my liking (not really marking against for this-I could have requested lesser done). And the coconut rice...the side I went with...wow. Great stuff. As far as drinks, I scoped the bar out. They have a pretty decent selection of liquor, and a pretty solid beer selection as well. And, they have one of my favs, the Southern Star Bombshell Blonde (not that it's anything special, I just had a good experience with them for a dollar at a tavern downtown in the past), so it struck the right chord! They also have several (either local, or small batch) bottled sodas too. One of which was on draft there. Nice! I will be back!

    Great place around park circle. The time to go is Sunday brunch. I have been for both dinner and brunch and I was most impressed by the brunch menu. The staff is always super helpful and nice. I can't say enough good things about the hash options. Delish!

    I've been to Basico several times in the past and now I'm not sure if I'll be back. We came in for brunch this last weekend and was disappointed. Although our service was still really good the food has really gone down. The menu was also different, it seemed more limited then the other times I've been for brunch. We ordered the chips and guac. The chips were almost pita like vs. corn tortilla. They were really thick and were boarding on burned they were so dark. The tacos I ordered were just not as good as in the past. I'd heard there was a new chef and am not a fan of the changes we were presented with. The frozen mojito and pork belly taco are no longer on the menu which were two of the things I loved about Basico. :(

    I've been wanting to check out Básico for awhile now and tonight we finally ventured out. Here's the Great: The food we had, all of it, was fantastic. Everything was fresh, extremely flavorful, and well portioned (although some might say the tacos are on the small side). They make the corn tortillas in house and are the best tortillas I've ever had at a restaurant. Service was very nice as well. We had the guacamole, the tacos platos (get the fried chicken was uh-amazing) and the Básico burger which was good, descent, but not great. The grilled veggie salad I got as a side to my tacos was really, really good. I loved the presentation too. I also appreciated that for the tacos platos, you can get three different tacos rather than all the same so you can try out different flavors/proteins. The Good: The decor is clean, and modern but it feels a little cold in there and in no way shape or form resembles anything like a latin/hispanic restaurant. It is also not a particularly large space. The restroom was very spartan, but clean with high end hand wash AND lotion. They have only one unisex bathroom and the time I visited, the toilet appeared to be broken. I notified our server and he directed me through another door to what appeared to be a party space which also mirrored the restaurant in the front. I guess this might where the MBRC members eat? Not sure but that is what it looked like. Any who, there was another restroom located on the members side as well which I was allowed to use. The prices are a little high, but not totally unreasonable. Básico is now definitely near the top of my list of favorite Mexican restaurants in Charleston. I can't wait to go back.

    Definitely a solid 3 stars. I went again with two friends. Tacos still delicious! Had the brisket again (what can I say, I can't resist the avocado) and tried the fish taco. I did not expect the fish to be fried, but it is. The fish itself had zero flavor so make sure to eat with sauce on every bite! Eaten all together, it's delicious. The brisket again was top notch. I ordered the braised greens. Very disappointed. They could have been AMAZING, nice heat, but waaaaay too salty... and I love salt! I couldn't finish it, that's how salty it was. My friend ordered the coleslaw as a side and hated it. Said all she tasted was vinegar and immediately asked it be swapped for a different side. My other friend ordered the braised beans. She thought it was okay, would have liked more cheese, but I had a taste and would order that next time. No real complaints on any of the tacos but the sides continue to be many misses, few hits.

    the food was good and fresh. I wish I could say the same for my friends. The kitchen staff screwed up orders and even screwed one up twice. they had great happy hour specials. We might try it one more time see if they get things right. I do have to add they comp'd all the food that they messed up.

    Very nice addition to the Mixon/Park Circle scene in North Charleston. Beautiful interior decorating greets you. High ceilings and a unique ceiling fan which looks like a giant floor fan laid on its side. Fun touch. The food is mexican based and much more genuine than Americanized, but everyone will fine something they like from fresh chips and tacos to grilled corn and gin with coconut water drinks (Wife Precious really liked that!). I was intrigued by the grilled butter beans. Never heard of it and just had to order it. Man, what a treat. The beans are still in the shell when charred on a grilled, then tossed with a pumpkin seed pesto with a shot of lime juice. Put the shell in between your teeth, close mouth and pull through. You get the char flavor off the outside of the shell, the pesto and the tender beans. That pesto is crazy good. I've never had that combo of flavors before, and I could have eaten those all days. Not being a gin drinker, I had them me one of the aforementioned drinks with vodka. A little hint of ginger and fresh lime in coconut water. This may be my new summer drink. Served in a chilled metal cup, it's a wonderful summer drink, and goes great with the grilled butter beans. Tacos had fresh soft corn shells and several choices. $3 each so you can sample a lot. The potatoes with roasted garlic aioli was also a nice combo of flavors. Be sure to get the grilled corn. Nice aioli and cheese toppings. All said, this place is off to a solid start. Glad to see the area attracting places of this caliber. It's to Mexican what EVO is to pizza - outstanding food in North Chuck.

    Food was excellent! I had the chicken chimichunga with house made mole. I love mole. It's usually a high end Mexican joint or the hole in thev wall that has good or any mole. This pace is in a weird spot, well honestly the whole development is... between Rivers and South Rhett isn't exactly the safest/best neighborhood to go to or live in. But it's changing and this is the nicest restaurat for at least two miles in all directions. And the decor is also more fancy than one would expect.

    Went here for dinner with friends last evening. It wasn't crowded at all but the waiter was very helpful and informative. I ordered the basico margarita and the flavor was awesome! It tasted like a homemade mix. It was happy hour as well, which made it even better. For food, I ordered the 3 tacos and a side. I tried the shrimp, fried chicken and fish tacos. All were good, but I think the fried chicken was the best. For my side I got these fried potato type things, and I cannot remember the name of them, but they were delicious. All in all, I would go back and I would recommend especially if you are in the North Charleston area.

    Not quite sure how I feel about Basico yet. I like the design of the whole building but at the same time, it feels like I should be shopping rather than eating mexican type food. The free corn nuts were some of the most nastiest nuts I have ever put in my mouth. The chips and salsa were good but not a lot were given but the price was not bad. I had 3 tacos that all had a solid taste. Even though I am a bigger gal that likes my food, the tacos were more like a taco shot. If you are hungry, make sure you order more than you think you can eat. A bum walked in and went to the bar. The pretty white girl waitresses were freaking out. It comes with the territory ... if you build in their area, its going to happen. The manger had to escort him out. I like that North Charleston is trying to get better places but this one is lacking something, maybe with time?

    Would give it zero stars if I could. Food is ok, but service is horrendous. We waited 15 minutes and the manager walked right past us while doing his best to ignore eye contact. We finally left and don't plan on going back. Neither should anyone else. This is the third time we have tried to eat here and the service has never improved. Do yourself a favor and don't ever go to this place.

    I really love this place! From Arizona and I'm a big fan of Mexican food. My husband and I ordered tacos which we were able to mix and match. I got the fresh catch, fried chicken, and pork belly. Pork belly was my favorite! Chips and salsa were really good but could have been spicier. I had an Arnold Palmer to drink and was amazed at how good their lemonade is, FRESH SQUEEZED!!:) in love! Definitely my new spot.

    Modern, urban, industrial decor. The steel drinking cups look cool, but the outside of the cup sweats like a mutha! Nice outdoor seating, but I can see the mosquitos being an issue in the Summertime. The servers were nice, helpful, etc... The ingredients were high quality and presentation nice. Downside is the portions are minute for the price. The entrees look like tapas actually. Overall, good place, but I may not make the drive to mixson for Mexican.

    Quaint little place in North Charleston. Nice atmosphere. The chicken enchiladas with verde sauce were fantastic. Best I've had since moving to this Mexican food wasteland from Texas. My lovely wife had three tacos and fried corn. Loved the corn. Loved the pastor. The Chelada was too spicy to drink. However, they gave me another beer on the side to tone it down. Great service from Sara. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

    A strange city on a work trip is always a challenge. I was sitting on base, no idea where to eat - when this place popped up as a recommendation. Having no idea where this was, I hopped in that rental Nissan Versa and achieved nearly skateboard-like speeds as I drove over. The adjoining neighborhood is undergoing significant construction. The laborers appear to be learning challenging new problem skills, like what happens if you load unsecured scaffolding on a fork lift and hit the curb FUNNY STUFF HAPPENS. So, turning the corner into a charming market I saw this beautiful restaurant. I was quickly and cheerfully seated. I spoke with the server about my gluten issues, and he made several immediate recommendations. Then he said "mole". I was a lost,lost soul. I went careful - just a cheese enchilada with mole. He recommended the house version of sław made with jicama. Oh sure, the house tortilla chips and guacamole please. I love bright, clean restaurants. I love Mexican restaurants that don't play tourist tacky. I love real interior Mexican cuisine. I don't love Tex Mex. The enchilada was light, crispy and the mole was surprising. Somehow, it vanished from my plate in about three minutes. My attention turned to the slaw. When its home made and well done, it's one of the happiest memories of my childhood. The remarkable spark jicama gives it is unreal. If your idea of Mexican cuisine was formed by talking Chuihahas or restaurants with clapping waiters screeching Felíz Cumpleaños a tí and dishing up deep fried everything - well, no. This is much more honest, interior and healthy.

    Go for the cocktails (maybe) but don't stay for the food. Chips were burnt and tough. The guac was good but the portion was skimpy for the price. "Hot" chicken taco was not spicy at all and the Al Pastor taco had some weird and very unpleasant mayonnaise sauce on it, which made the whole taco soggy and taste only of hot mayo. The service was friendly but very slow, even in a nearly empty restaurant. They allow dogs on their patio, so we were treated to uninterrupted barking and even got to watch a dog poo a few feet from our table. No bueno!!!

    I can see exactly how someone could end up giving this place a bad review. We went on Sunday morning, beautiful day, awesome atmosphere, live music from outside, so far so good. The cocojito is not to be missed, small but strong for $7. The Cobb salad I ordered was bad news. The dressing was just off and I didn't expect a sunny side egg. If this had been my only meal eaten here, I wouldn't be giving this place 4 stars. But I know better. My boyfriend got awesome tender fried chicken with churros. The churros were so so but the chicken knocked it out. I definitely want this chicken for myself next time. The spicy corn was good just like last time. Feeling like I'm abroad while drinking my cocktail is definitely worth the trip up to North Charleston. I'll be back, maybe just not for brunch.

    First experience here was the other night and it was excellent. I think this place is a solid 4-star but feel the need to bump it up to 5 considering my personal experience and to try and even out some other less than fair reviews. So Basico is the new restaurant in the Mixson community attached to the Bath & Racquet Club. Because we feel that the B&R Club is trying a little bit too hard to be exclusive, my wife and I were initially apprehensive about checking out this restaurant. One evening after a hard day of work and chores, we decided to give it a shot. Upon arriving and walking in the front door, I was a little put off by the interior decor. It really does kind of feel like a frozen yogurt shop or something along those lines. Luckily, it was a very nice evening and the temperature was perfect for sitting outside. They had a lot of tables available out on the patio and we were surprised that Basico wasn't more busy considering it was around 8pm on a Saturday. All of these things I considered bad omens, probably because I didn't really have high hopes for the place. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with our meal! We started with the shrimp and scallop ceviche which was really delicious and well prepared. Then I moved on to the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce & mexican rice and my wife got the carnitas tacos with street corn. I feel like I am rushing through this part of the review because I am so excited to type about dessert but believe me the food was excellent. Perfect portion size and the prices were not excessive at all (unlike the Bath & Racquet Club). I forgot to mention that we both got some kind of spicy margarita that was really good and flavorful but had a decent amount of heat to it. On to dessert...GET THE CHURROS. They aren't your typical foot long processed churros you are used to. These are handmade 2-3 bite sized amazing delicious treats. There were four pieces per order and they came with two different dipping sauces. One was melted dark chocolate and the other I can't place but I thought it was awesome. Seriously, get the churros. Altogether we had a really nice experience here and we will be back soon. The service was excellent and all of the staff members we interacted with were very professional and had great knowledge of the menu. For some reason on the particular night we were there, they had a late rush and 5-6 tables filled up between 8:15 and 8:45. I was happy to see them get busier. The Mixson area has really developed a lot in the past 6-8 months so that is another great excuse to come out to the Park Circle area. East Montague's night life has gotten a lot more consistent as well so after dinner drinks are a perfect option for date night.

    We are members at Mixson Bath & Racquet Club...so we eat at Basico once every couple of weeks at least. I have to say the food has only gotten better as time goes on. When they switched chefs (BRILLIANT move) everything took a huge LEAP forward. The flavors, the menu, the sides, and well just everything!!! The new menu is incredible. If you ate here pre new menu you need to return and try it out again. Tonight we went to the Wine Tasting after yoga and ended up staying for dinner. We had the 'Fork and Knife Duck Tacos' Honestly they were more like enchilidas - but who cares....they were incredible. The coconut rice was 'outstanding' After dinner the chef brought out a pumpking bread dessert with homemade ice cream on top....with a goats milk caramel sauce. SWEET MOSES. INCREDIBLE. Give it a try. It's really incredible, and quite reasonable.

    My first time with the new menu... definitely moving in the right direction but a few things stuck out for me that I think need fixing. I live close so I soooo want to love it. Guac/Salsa happy hour app was great, the fresh chips divine. The containers for each however are very tiny, hard to dip the wonderful chips into the little cups. Happy hour margaritas, also divine, especially at $5. Was a little surprised to see that wonderful 'Cocojito' now costs $9. Moving on... The Hanger steak at $17 was delicious and cooked perfectly according to the hubs, but the teeny tiny plate it came on and the teeny tiny serving of steak, make this a confusing dish. A heady helping of the potatoes and two slivers of what is typically a pretty cheap cut of beef. The side of chilled butterbean salad had great potential but was screaming for some salt. None to be had on the table, nor was any hot sauce available or offered by the server. We noticed when we left little there were holders with all of these things near the bar, oh well. I had the Mushroom enchiladas, as a veggie and serious shroom lover, I was pumped. The mushrooms were great, the pecan mole even better. But the overpowering mountain of Lime Crema doused the entire plate. I like Crema, but this was a whole lot. Some actual cheese in the enchilada would have helped, it was literally, a pile of mushrooms wrapped in the tortilla, nothing else. So bites fell apart immediately. As much as I love the mole, the earthy mushrooms coupled with the earthy sauce- its quite a brown plate, smothered in cream. At $12 it is a hearty dish, three times the size of the steak plate. I felt strange with this monstrous plate next to my husband's order... Anyway, I think you're on the right track Basico, definitely an improvement over my previous visits when it first opened. 4 happy hour margs, the guac, the steak, the side of beans, the enchiladas came to $63, so with tip we were at a $75 meal. Will be back soon for that happy hour, great deals there, surprised you don't promote that more.

    We tried this place and were pleasantly surprised in several ways. The first immediate, being such a nice and tucked away little community housing and pool center complete with market and this eatery. The establishment is simple and offers a beach bum ambiance. They have a straightforward menu that teases traditionality of Latin flavors but boasts Top Chef fusion flavors and playful creations. Basico has a food and drink happy menu every evening and we happened upon this place during the appropriate time frame to participate. The only problem we really faced was that the menu is apparently in the middle of a revamp of sorts so you can not mix and match tacos as the menu suggests because the chef is now plating the dish as a build your own taco plate. Extremely frustrating and the group of tacos we chose from the regular menu were the ones we hated. Everything else we tried was delicious even with a few flaws. The 3 taco platter my husband chose were the Lamb Barbacoa...the flavor and texture were hideous and my husband LOVES lamb. The sauce was also very salty and sweet and had far too much sauce to meat ratio. It also came with a pickled melon find which just made it worse. I would love to give points for attempted creativity but the taste was just atrocious. The rest of our meal and friend's meal were items ordered from the happy hour menu. We had the nachos, quesadilla, and daily fish taco. The daily fish taco was Baja styled grouper with pickled red cabbage on top and a pleasant house sauce. The taco tasted great but had FAR too much pickled cabbage, so we took enough off. The nachos and quesadilla were comprised of the same core ingredients and while neither were anything special, they tasted great and as expected which made is happy because apparently other eateries in the Charleston area do not know how to make either of these simple dishes. We would suggest this place to friends but without a hype. We would also return to enjoy this place again :)

    Bizarre. On A Sunday early evening there is one table occupied with a kid in there. Place is manned by 3 young people, bathroom was dirty, unflushed, and the ambience in general was downright stark and sterile. Water comes in an aluminum "sippy cup" with a baby little straw! The color scheme is this bright lime green with these cheapo white chairs. The food was marginally good... the descriptors read great but what I ordered, 3 different tacos and chips and salsa, failed to really impress whatsoever. Also, again, with the service aspect -- my server didn't bring me the typical basic sauces that they normally would...So I got up to get them and she still didn't even offer to bring them over. One of her colleagues, however, came to her rescue. The guy that appeared to be the manager kept stopping by my table to see if I was "doing okay"...really, unnecessary because he wasn't adding anything. Ugh. Total mismatch for what I'd read. I'd like to post pictures of the place and the food but not seeing the opportunity to do so. Not up to Charleston standards!

    We have lived in the circle for about 2 years now and have been here a few times. Usually pretty empty but the cocktails are great and the food is always pretty good. This was the first time we did the brunch and it was awesome. I had the green chili chorizo hash and my wife did the tacos. Both were great. And they know how to make a mimosa right. We usually do the madra brunch but we just decided that we are now going to rotate the 2. It was that good. Totally worth doing. Definitely worth trying if you haven't been. And if you shied away before like we did after just being OK with it after it opened. Try it again. At least do the brunch.

    First time we went was a taste tester in their back room. That was a few months ago and I've been craving their soup ever since. We were finally able to get back about 2 weeks ago and the soup did not disappoint. I could eat that chicken tortilla soup every day and never get tired - the portions were also very nice sized. I also loved my margarita's. We then split the steak and enchiladas. The steak was on the small size but cooked medium rare to perfection and very tasty. The enchiladas were very tasty when we added their homemade spicy taco sauce and there was plenty to take home for a nice lunch the next day. The atmosphere is fantastic, although the staff seemed quite scattered. Don't get me wrong, they were all wonderful but seemed to be rushing around and interrupting each other even when one of them was talking to a customer. The place was full, but it's so small and there was a bunch of staff, we couldn't figure out why they seemed scattered. That being said, it truly is a great place, great food, fun atmosphere and pleasant staff.

    Wow! Amazing food. Everything was so fresh and cooked perfectly. There were 7 of us and it's really hard to say which was my favorite. The space is small so get there early or expect a small wait. Service was great. Basically we will be back as this is going to be one of our favorite places.

    Great place around park circle. The time to go is Sunday brunch. I have been for both dinner and brunch and I was most impressed by the brunch menu. The staff is always super helpful and nice. I can't say enough good things about the hash options. Delish!

    I've been wanting to check out Básico for awhile now and tonight we finally ventured out. Here's the Great: The food we had, all of it, was fantastic. Everything was fresh, extremely flavorful, and well portioned (although some might say the tacos are on the small side). They make the corn tortillas in house and are the best tortillas I've ever had at a restaurant. Service was very nice as well. We had the guacamole, the tacos platos (get the fried chicken was uh-amazing) and the Básico burger which was good, descent, but not great. The grilled veggie salad I got as a side to my tacos was really, really good. I loved the presentation too. I also appreciated that for the tacos platos, you can get three different tacos rather than all the same so you can try out different flavors/proteins. The Good: The decor is clean, and modern but it feels a little cold in there and in no way shape or form resembles anything like a latin/hispanic restaurant. It is also not a particularly large space. The restroom was very spartan, but clean with high end hand wash AND lotion. They have only one unisex bathroom and the time I visited, the toilet appeared to be broken. I notified our server and he directed me through another door to what appeared to be a party space which also mirrored the restaurant in the front. I guess this might where the MBRC members eat? Not sure but that is what it looked like. Any who, there was another restroom located on the members side as well which I was allowed to use. The prices are a little high, but not totally unreasonable. Básico is now definitely near the top of my list of favorite Mexican restaurants in Charleston. I can't wait to go back.

    Definitely a solid 3 stars. I went again with two friends. Tacos still delicious! Had the brisket again (what can I say, I can't resist the avocado) and tried the fish taco. I did not expect the fish to be fried, but it is. The fish itself had zero flavor so make sure to eat with sauce on every bite! Eaten all together, it's delicious. The brisket again was top notch. I ordered the braised greens. Very disappointed. They could have been AMAZING, nice heat, but waaaaay too salty... and I love salt! I couldn't finish it, that's how salty it was. My friend ordered the coleslaw as a side and hated it. Said all she tasted was vinegar and immediately asked it be swapped for a different side. My other friend ordered the braised beans. She thought it was okay, would have liked more cheese, but I had a taste and would order that next time. No real complaints on any of the tacos but the sides continue to be many misses, few hits.

    the food was good and fresh. I wish I could say the same for my friends. The kitchen staff screwed up orders and even screwed one up twice. they had great happy hour specials. We might try it one more time see if they get things right. I do have to add they comp'd all the food that they messed up.

    Service sucks. Our server took too long to get our drinks and food because she was busy talking to her friend behind the bar. She forgot to get my grilled corn and had to be reminded. The food was okay. I had 3 tacos and grilled corn. The chorizo meat was dry and the pork was too salty. However, the chicken was good. The grilled corn was also good. With all the hype I thought this experience would be wonderful, but it was a let down! Won't go back again.

    Went in the other day for our 5th time. The menu has changed and the prices have all increased. Before an entree would come with a side and now it doesn't it cost $3.50 extra. I can see my self spending $16 on a small dish plus $3.50 extra for a side. I was so disappointed I let my wife and in-laws eat I refused...just as I will no longer partake in that restaurant. Lost a good customer over greed.

    I'd give this place a 4.5 (there we go with the half ratings again) stars. What a great hidden little spot in the middle of North Charleston! This place has an upscale/trendy crowd that is well suited for it's new, nautical, cantina decor. At first I thought this place was going to be a all hype because the server that first sat us didn't know what was on draft (there are only 4 or 5...and he was working behind the bar later, so it's not like he wasn't in the area to not know that). But it was all up from there! The actual server that helped us knew his stuff, was back multiple times before refills were even needed to ask, and was extremely helpful and attentive. The type that makes you want to leave a good tip. For the food. The food here is fantastic. We had the chip and salsa trip app that had a pick de gallo, a tomatillo, and a red, restaurant looking salsa. All fantastic. I'm a salsa nut, and the typical looking one here is up there with some of my favs. For an entree I got the trio of tacos (which can with a side). I opted for the catch of the day (swordfish), the fried chicken, and the carne asada. The swordfish and fried chicken were fantastic. The chicken had an orange sauce (think Asian white sauce) on it, and was cooked perfectly. Great job guys! The carne was good overall, but the meat was on the overdone side for my liking (not really marking against for this-I could have requested lesser done). And the coconut rice...the side I went with...wow. Great stuff. As far as drinks, I scoped the bar out. They have a pretty decent selection of liquor, and a pretty solid beer selection as well. And, they have one of my favs, the Southern Star Bombshell Blonde (not that it's anything special, I just had a good experience with them for a dollar at a tavern downtown in the past), so it struck the right chord! They also have several (either local, or small batch) bottled sodas too. One of which was on draft there. Nice! I will be back!

    I've been to Basico several times in the past and now I'm not sure if I'll be back. We came in for brunch this last weekend and was disappointed. Although our service was still really good the food has really gone down. The menu was also different, it seemed more limited then the other times I've been for brunch. We ordered the chips and guac. The chips were almost pita like vs. corn tortilla. They were really thick and were boarding on burned they were so dark. The tacos I ordered were just not as good as in the past. I'd heard there was a new chef and am not a fan of the changes we were presented with. The frozen mojito and pork belly taco are no longer on the menu which were two of the things I loved about Basico. :(

    $15 for 3 tacos.. but well worth it. Comes with a side and you can mix and match. Specials of the day are interesting. Cool location, healthy servings and home made hot sauces to boot. Sides are imaginative. One of our favorite tacorita. Mixson is a very cool and upcoming hip place. More and more are offered at this clutch N. Charleston area.     I never even knew about this place- we stumbled upon it by accident. There were 4 of us. It was big, spacious and clean! It even had a cute outdoor dining area- we actually started eating inside and then decided to move outside because it was so nice out. They were so gracious to help us move. Everything was really good from the mixed cocktails to the service to the food. Prices were not bad either! ;-) My favorite was the fresh catch & the shrimp tacos along with the Mexican Street Korn :)

    Very nice addition to the Mixon/Park Circle scene in North Charleston. Beautiful interior decorating greets you. High ceilings and a unique ceiling fan which looks like a giant floor fan laid on its side. Fun touch. The food is mexican based and much more genuine than Americanized, but everyone will fine something they like from fresh chips and tacos to grilled corn and gin with coconut water drinks (Wife Precious really liked that!). I was intrigued by the grilled butter beans. Never heard of it and just had to order it. Man, what a treat. The beans are still in the shell when charred on a grilled, then tossed with a pumpkin seed pesto with a shot of lime juice. Put the shell in between your teeth, close mouth and pull through. You get the char flavor off the outside of the shell, the pesto and the tender beans. That pesto is crazy good. I've never had that combo of flavors before, and I could have eaten those all days. Not being a gin drinker, I had them me one of the aforementioned drinks with vodka. A little hint of ginger and fresh lime in coconut water. This may be my new summer drink. Served in a chilled metal cup, it's a wonderful summer drink, and goes great with the grilled butter beans. Tacos had fresh soft corn shells and several choices. $3 each so you can sample a lot. The potatoes with roasted garlic aioli was also a nice combo of flavors. Be sure to get the grilled corn. Nice aioli and cheese toppings. All said, this place is off to a solid start. Glad to see the area attracting places of this caliber. It's to Mexican what EVO is to pizza - outstanding food in North Chuck.

    Food was excellent! I had the chicken chimichunga with house made mole. I love mole. It's usually a high end Mexican joint or the hole in thev wall that has good or any mole. This pace is in a weird spot, well honestly the whole development is... between Rivers and South Rhett isn't exactly the safest/best neighborhood to go to or live in. But it's changing and this is the nicest restaurat for at least two miles in all directions. And the decor is also more fancy than one would expect.

    Went here for dinner with friends last evening. It wasn't crowded at all but the waiter was very helpful and informative. I ordered the basico margarita and the flavor was awesome! It tasted like a homemade mix. It was happy hour as well, which made it even better. For food, I ordered the 3 tacos and a side. I tried the shrimp, fried chicken and fish tacos. All were good, but I think the fried chicken was the best. For my side I got these fried potato type things, and I cannot remember the name of them, but they were delicious. All in all, I would go back and I would recommend especially if you are in the North Charleston area.

    Not quite sure how I feel about Basico yet. I like the design of the whole building but at the same time, it feels like I should be shopping rather than eating mexican type food. The free corn nuts were some of the most nastiest nuts I have ever put in my mouth. The chips and salsa were good but not a lot were given but the price was not bad. I had 3 tacos that all had a solid taste. Even though I am a bigger gal that likes my food, the tacos were more like a taco shot. If you are hungry, make sure you order more than you think you can eat. A bum walked in and went to the bar. The pretty white girl waitresses were freaking out. It comes with the territory ... if you build in their area, its going to happen. The manger had to escort him out. I like that North Charleston is trying to get better places but this one is lacking something, maybe with time?

    Would give it zero stars if I could. Food is ok, but service is horrendous. We waited 15 minutes and the manager walked right past us while doing his best to ignore eye contact. We finally left and don't plan on going back. Neither should anyone else. This is the third time we have tried to eat here and the service has never improved. Do yourself a favor and don't ever go to this place.

    I really love this place! From Arizona and I'm a big fan of Mexican food. My husband and I ordered tacos which we were able to mix and match. I got the fresh catch, fried chicken, and pork belly. Pork belly was my favorite! Chips and salsa were really good but could have been spicier. I had an Arnold Palmer to drink and was amazed at how good their lemonade is, FRESH SQUEEZED!!:) in love! Definitely my new spot.

    First experience here was the other night and it was excellent. I think this place is a solid 4-star but feel the need to bump it up to 5 considering my personal experience and to try and even out some other less than fair reviews. So Basico is the new restaurant in the Mixson community attached to the Bath & Racquet Club. Because we feel that the B&R Club is trying a little bit too hard to be exclusive, my wife and I were initially apprehensive about checking out this restaurant. One evening after a hard day of work and chores, we decided to give it a shot. Upon arriving and walking in the front door, I was a little put off by the interior decor. It really does kind of feel like a frozen yogurt shop or something along those lines. Luckily, it was a very nice evening and the temperature was perfect for sitting outside. They had a lot of tables available out on the patio and we were surprised that Basico wasn't more busy considering it was around 8pm on a Saturday. All of these things I considered bad omens, probably because I didn't really have high hopes for the place. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with our meal! We started with the shrimp and scallop ceviche which was really delicious and well prepared. Then I moved on to the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce & mexican rice and my wife got the carnitas tacos with street corn. I feel like I am rushing through this part of the review because I am so excited to type about dessert but believe me the food was excellent. Perfect portion size and the prices were not excessive at all (unlike the Bath & Racquet Club). I forgot to mention that we both got some kind of spicy margarita that was really good and flavorful but had a decent amount of heat to it. On to dessert...GET THE CHURROS. They aren't your typical foot long processed churros you are used to. These are handmade 2-3 bite sized amazing delicious treats. There were four pieces per order and they came with two different dipping sauces. One was melted dark chocolate and the other I can't place but I thought it was awesome. Seriously, get the churros. Altogether we had a really nice experience here and we will be back soon. The service was excellent and all of the staff members we interacted with were very professional and had great knowledge of the menu. For some reason on the particular night we were there, they had a late rush and 5-6 tables filled up between 8:15 and 8:45. I was happy to see them get busier. The Mixson area has really developed a lot in the past 6-8 months so that is another great excuse to come out to the Park Circle area. East Montague's night life has gotten a lot more consistent as well so after dinner drinks are a perfect option for date night.

    When I went here the first thing I noticed was that it was a really well designed spot and had a very nice, clean atmosphere. It's all white inside and very spacious and bright. We did have a hard time finding it, it's a little bit hidden and in a random area. We went for Brunch on a Sunday, and so I got the chilaquiles. They were very good, but overpriced. I kind of assumed with the atmosphere that the food would be, but chilaquiles are something your momma makes you for breakfast with the leftover, stale tortillas. But -- obviously, this Mexican food isn't "homestyle". The portions are kind of small, as other have mentioned, but overall I think the taste and atmosphere made up for it. Really good sides as well!

    We went for Cinco de Mayo dinner, they were busy and the service was non-existent until the Rock Star server Jordan rescued the experience for us.     Good: 1) modern and contemporary ambience. 2) clean and hygienic restroom 3) ample parking Bad: 1) Poor vegetarian choices 2) under seasoned and insipid tasting food 3) Average service FYI: I'm ovo-lacto-vegetarian. I did not try their drink menu but on the whole it was a very underwhelming experience. If this place is going to make it in the competitive charleston restaurant-scape by claiming to offer modern interpretations of traditional Mexican offerings - the taste of the food needs a lot of work!

    This little place luckily served up some good food! My husband and I decided to try them out one night for Charleston Restaurant Week and upon entering we seated ourselves right away. The decor is nice although suffering from an identity crisis in my opinion. The feel inside is very beachy and airy but the menu offers Mexican fair. It is still very nice, just wasn't the decor I expected from a Mexican restaurant. The service however was very slow, both in front of the house and the kitchen. We ordered the queso blanco dip which for a cheese dip or fondue took far to long to get to our table, 20+ minutes! I will say that it was very good. The server even offered to bring additional chips so that we could try to finish. My husband and I both had enchiladas as our entrees. He had the brisket while I had the enchilada suiza. Both dishes again were worth the wait. The corn salsa alone was satisfying. The side of rice however lacked a lot of flavor and seasoning. Our entire experience there was about 1.5 hours. A bit too long for our liking but thankfully the food made it worth enough for us to consider going back again.

    A strange city on a work trip is always a challenge. I was sitting on base, no idea where to eat - when this place popped up as a recommendation. Having no idea where this was, I hopped in that rental Nissan Versa and achieved nearly skateboard-like speeds as I drove over. The adjoining neighborhood is undergoing significant construction. The laborers appear to be learning challenging new problem skills, like what happens if you load unsecured scaffolding on a fork lift and hit the curb FUNNY STUFF HAPPENS. So, turning the corner into a charming market I saw this beautiful restaurant. I was quickly and cheerfully seated. I spoke with the server about my gluten issues, and he made several immediate recommendations. Then he said "mole". I was a lost,lost soul. I went careful - just a cheese enchilada with mole. He recommended the house version of sław made with jicama. Oh sure, the house tortilla chips and guacamole please. I love bright, clean restaurants. I love Mexican restaurants that don't play tourist tacky. I love real interior Mexican cuisine. I don't love Tex Mex. The enchilada was light, crispy and the mole was surprising. Somehow, it vanished from my plate in about three minutes. My attention turned to the slaw. When its home made and well done, it's one of the happiest memories of my childhood. The remarkable spark jicama gives it is unreal. If your idea of Mexican cuisine was formed by talking Chuihahas or restaurants with clapping waiters screeching Felíz Cumpleaños a tí and dishing up deep fried everything - well, no. This is much more honest, interior and healthy.

    Go for the cocktails (maybe) but don't stay for the food. Chips were burnt and tough. The guac was good but the portion was skimpy for the price. "Hot" chicken taco was not spicy at all and the Al Pastor taco had some weird and very unpleasant mayonnaise sauce on it, which made the whole taco soggy and taste only of hot mayo. The service was friendly but very slow, even in a nearly empty restaurant. They allow dogs on their patio, so we were treated to uninterrupted barking and even got to watch a dog poo a few feet from our table. No bueno!!!

    I can see exactly how someone could end up giving this place a bad review. We went on Sunday morning, beautiful day, awesome atmosphere, live music from outside, so far so good. The cocojito is not to be missed, small but strong for $7. The Cobb salad I ordered was bad news. The dressing was just off and I didn't expect a sunny side egg. If this had been my only meal eaten here, I wouldn't be giving this place 4 stars. But I know better. My boyfriend got awesome tender fried chicken with churros. The churros were so so but the chicken knocked it out. I definitely want this chicken for myself next time. The spicy corn was good just like last time. Feeling like I'm abroad while drinking my cocktail is definitely worth the trip up to North Charleston. I'll be back, maybe just not for brunch.

    Modern, urban, industrial decor. The steel drinking cups look cool, but the outside of the cup sweats like a mutha! Nice outdoor seating, but I can see the mosquitos being an issue in the Summertime. The servers were nice, helpful, etc... The ingredients were high quality and presentation nice. Downside is the portions are minute for the price. The entrees look like tapas actually. Overall, good place, but I may not make the drive to mixson for Mexican.

    Quaint little place in North Charleston. Nice atmosphere. The chicken enchiladas with verde sauce were fantastic. Best I've had since moving to this Mexican food wasteland from Texas. My lovely wife had three tacos and fried corn. Loved the corn. Loved the pastor. The Chelada was too spicy to drink. However, they gave me another beer on the side to tone it down. Great service from Sara. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

    We are members at Mixson Bath & Racquet Club...so we eat at Basico once every couple of weeks at least. I have to say the food has only gotten better as time goes on. When they switched chefs (BRILLIANT move) everything took a huge LEAP forward. The flavors, the menu, the sides, and well just everything!!! The new menu is incredible. If you ate here pre new menu you need to return and try it out again. Tonight we went to the Wine Tasting after yoga and ended up staying for dinner. We had the 'Fork and Knife Duck Tacos' Honestly they were more like enchilidas - but who cares....they were incredible. The coconut rice was 'outstanding' After dinner the chef brought out a pumpking bread dessert with homemade ice cream on top....with a goats milk caramel sauce. SWEET MOSES. INCREDIBLE. Give it a try. It's really incredible, and quite reasonable.

    My first time with the new menu... definitely moving in the right direction but a few things stuck out for me that I think need fixing. I live close so I soooo want to love it. Guac/Salsa happy hour app was great, the fresh chips divine. The containers for each however are very tiny, hard to dip the wonderful chips into the little cups. Happy hour margaritas, also divine, especially at $5. Was a little surprised to see that wonderful 'Cocojito' now costs $9. Moving on... The Hanger steak at $17 was delicious and cooked perfectly according to the hubs, but the teeny tiny plate it came on and the teeny tiny serving of steak, make this a confusing dish. A heady helping of the potatoes and two slivers of what is typically a pretty cheap cut of beef. The side of chilled butterbean salad had great potential but was screaming for some salt. None to be had on the table, nor was any hot sauce available or offered by the server. We noticed when we left little there were holders with all of these things near the bar, oh well. I had the Mushroom enchiladas, as a veggie and serious shroom lover, I was pumped. The mushrooms were great, the pecan mole even better. But the overpowering mountain of Lime Crema doused the entire plate. I like Crema, but this was a whole lot. Some actual cheese in the enchilada would have helped, it was literally, a pile of mushrooms wrapped in the tortilla, nothing else. So bites fell apart immediately. As much as I love the mole, the earthy mushrooms coupled with the earthy sauce- its quite a brown plate, smothered in cream. At $12 it is a hearty dish, three times the size of the steak plate. I felt strange with this monstrous plate next to my husband's order... Anyway, I think you're on the right track Basico, definitely an improvement over my previous visits when it first opened. 4 happy hour margs, the guac, the steak, the side of beans, the enchiladas came to $63, so with tip we were at a $75 meal. Will be back soon for that happy hour, great deals there, surprised you don't promote that more.

    We tried this place and were pleasantly surprised in several ways. The first immediate, being such a nice and tucked away little community housing and pool center complete with market and this eatery. The establishment is simple and offers a beach bum ambiance. They have a straightforward menu that teases traditionality of Latin flavors but boasts Top Chef fusion flavors and playful creations. Basico has a food and drink happy menu every evening and we happened upon this place during the appropriate time frame to participate. The only problem we really faced was that the menu is apparently in the middle of a revamp of sorts so you can not mix and match tacos as the menu suggests because the chef is now plating the dish as a build your own taco plate. Extremely frustrating and the group of tacos we chose from the regular menu were the ones we hated. Everything else we tried was delicious even with a few flaws. The 3 taco platter my husband chose were the Lamb Barbacoa...the flavor and texture were hideous and my husband LOVES lamb. The sauce was also very salty and sweet and had far too much sauce to meat ratio. It also came with a pickled melon find which just made it worse. I would love to give points for attempted creativity but the taste was just atrocious. The rest of our meal and friend's meal were items ordered from the happy hour menu. We had the nachos, quesadilla, and daily fish taco. The daily fish taco was Baja styled grouper with pickled red cabbage on top and a pleasant house sauce. The taco tasted great but had FAR too much pickled cabbage, so we took enough off. The nachos and quesadilla were comprised of the same core ingredients and while neither were anything special, they tasted great and as expected which made is happy because apparently other eateries in the Charleston area do not know how to make either of these simple dishes. We would suggest this place to friends but without a hype. We would also return to enjoy this place again :)

    Bizarre. On A Sunday early evening there is one table occupied with a kid in there. Place is manned by 3 young people, bathroom was dirty, unflushed, and the ambience in general was downright stark and sterile. Water comes in an aluminum "sippy cup" with a baby little straw! The color scheme is this bright lime green with these cheapo white chairs. The food was marginally good... the descriptors read great but what I ordered, 3 different tacos and chips and salsa, failed to really impress whatsoever. Also, again, with the service aspect -- my server didn't bring me the typical basic sauces that they normally would...So I got up to get them and she still didn't even offer to bring them over. One of her colleagues, however, came to her rescue. The guy that appeared to be the manager kept stopping by my table to see if I was "doing okay"...really, unnecessary because he wasn't adding anything. Ugh. Total mismatch for what I'd read. I'd like to post pictures of the place and the food but not seeing the opportunity to do so. Not up to Charleston standards!

    We ordered the pork belly and bbq pork tacos as well as the trio of salsas. Very good and will definitely be back. Zach the bartender was great and service was awesome.

    Huge fan. Went today for lunch with my best friend. We split an order of chorizo tacos, fried chicken tacos, coconut rice, braised beans, and a trio of salsa. The salsas are better than any house made salsas I've had in charleston. Seriously they blew taco boys out of the water. The coconut rice literally had coconut shavings on top and was delicious. The beans were very flavorful as well. The fried chicken tacos were literally to die for. When I go back I will be sure to order 2 of them just for me because they are too good to share. The mint margarita was delicious, very fresh and not syrupy. More people need to try this place. It was delicious and very well priced! After dinner head to mixon market and grab a King of Pops seasalt chocolate pop or an ice cream sandwich.

    Another gem in North Charleston. Tacos are first rate and come three to an order, and you can mix and match from a variety of selections - my favorites are the chorizo, brisket, and fried chicken. All tortillas are made in house and exceeded my expectations. Salsas are fresh and very tasty. Good selection of beverages. Churros are great! This is another spot on my "must eat here" list when I'm in Charleston.

    Margaritas were unique and tasty! Had the Spicy grapefruit and the Pina margarita. Went to have more of what we sampled at the Yelp event, and were slightly disappointed. Being a cold evening, the hot tortilla soup sounded like a perfect finish, and it was great at the event. Unfortunately, it was cold when it arrived at our table and had a lot more rice in it than at the event. It also didn't have a significant amount of chicken. The crispy accents and the avocado were a good addition. Will definitely be back when we head that way in the future. The service was GREAT!!!

    If this were an established restaurant, I probably would rate lower, but I understand it takes time to iron out the kinks. The service left a lot to be desired. Lunch time with light traffic and ample staffing shouldn't take 90 mins. It did. Even our waters took 10 minutes to come out at the beginning of our stay. If some small logistical things could be solved, this would be an A-OK spot to grab lunch. The food was average. No complaints on taste, but it was nothing to write home about. Standard caucasian inspired Mexican food, or Mexican inspired caucasian food. Something like that. The big positive for everything at Mixson is the thought given towards clean, bright, airy design. Just fix the fundamentals on service and product to match the nod towards quality, and this place might ACTUALLY be quality.

    I just bought a house in the Park Circle area and heard great things from friends so I finally decided to try this place. I ordered the margarita and it was just okay, nothing crazy special about it. Next time I plan to try one of the more creative cocktails. We ordered the guacamole for starters and it was perfecto. I had the brisket and fried chicken tacos. Holy Moly, the chicken taco was my absolute favorite. Chicken was perfect texture and I loved the crunchy pickled watermelon rind paired with it. I know some people complained about the portions but it filled me up! I couldn't finish my side of Mexican Rice. (Which was also yummy) I'll definitely be going back here very soon!

    we were really excited that there was a restaurant in our neighborhood and that we've heard really good reviews about. we went for brunch last weekend and had a decent experience. Food was really good. The queso Blanco was really delicious. However, the service was sub-par. Nobody greeted us when we walked in even though, 4 servers were staring at us. We decided to go back this weekend for the queso again. We had the same experience when entering the restaurant; no greeting. Very disappointed to see the menu had changed as much as it did in a week. We were unable to order the queso Blanco we just had a week ago. But we ordered the queso fundido per the servers suggestion. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't even close to before and the house made chips they changed to didn't help the flavor. The avocado caesar salad didn't seem to have a relation at all to a caeser. The chicken and churros were good, but the chicken was a little over cooked both times. Overall, the food just wasn't as good as the first time and it seems they are making changes to really good menu items.

    I sell real estate n Charleston and love the new up and coming areas. So when I heard a cool, clean crisp, modern taqueria opened in Mixson a while back named Basico, I ran towards it quickly! Back in the summertime we came for a drink and bite at the bar. The service was great at the bar, the beer was freezing cold and delicious in the stainless cup, frosty and yummmmmmmy!! Better yet was the queso with the tortilla flats, what a treat and excellent flavor, nice to not have a bunch of crispy fried chips. I've been back several times with friends, coworkers and clients and it keeps getting better. Some of the servers are slower than others, some are nicer than others too, whatever that happens everywhere. This is a very progressive, urban killer area, much like parts of Atlanta like Howell Mill road and East Atlanta. Do not expect a La Hacienda, that's not what they are trying to achieve. This is a cool, hip, modern version worth the visit. But if you're going to be critical about not getting your typical anchilada then then you were warned and should go to senor tequila or la hacienda! We cannot wait to go back for more cocojitos!!

    This dinner was so awful and disappointing, it was nearly offensive. Now, mind you, I am a well-traveled and adventurous eater, so when I read the pedigree of the staff here (multiple CIA graduates and experience at Daniel, among others), I was there the very next day with giddy anticipation. From the second I walked in, I couldn't wait to leave. Parking in the mud was just the beginning. First off, the place looks and feels like a FroYo shop. It was cold and uncomfortable in every way - it did not invite us in. We stepped in kind of confused with the staff, in t-shirts and shorts, staring at us, unsure if they were going to seat us or if we should seat ourselves. The place was empty at 6pm on a Saturday, save 2 guys at the small bar - which in itself causes one to feel like an intruder. There is a barrier separating the main restaurant from the Mixon Bath and Racquet Club where there was some action of other customers. We asked if we could sit outside on the other side of the barrier when we were swiftly told that that side was for "their members only." We la dee, freakin' da. Therefore, we were relegated to the cold, hard benches and modern, but uncomfortable chairs. It felt like TCBY - except their furniture actually has cushioning, inviting one to stay a while. There is a large industrial fan in the center of the place that blows frigid, air conditioned air non-stop. Although it looks cool, I noticed several patrons walk in, sit in the middle of the restaurant, then move because of the wind tunnel. Like everything else at Basico, the focus is more on appearance than experience. The menu was limited to bites of tacos that tried their best to smash a bunch of "hip" ingredients together and call it "street food." I sure wish this trend would end. There were also some variations of quesadilla and some snacks, but those were equally as random, and ultimately, unappetizing. "Lamb bacon?" Bacon is not a lamb. Lamb is not bacon. WTH? Just call it "smoked, cured lamb" instead of trying to capitalize on the bacon bandwagon. A "cabeza" taco? Just call it "head cheese" and then realize that you're in North Charleston and take that nonsense downtown. I then noticed, with relief, that we were given the "Lunch" menu. Phew! There was hope yet! But wait.... "that's just the menu we're working with now. We're still trying to figure things out." Rats. Corn nuts with bleu cheese powder and a carbonated kool aid-sweet strawberry sangria with a lemon and lime slice floating in it should have tipped us to just cut our losses and go. It was like gas station corn nuts with a coating of dried paste that, even after spitting them into my napkin, wouldn't allow the horrid flavor to dissipate. And sangria does not do well with bubbles. It just tasted like cheap, expired wine. My thought to this point was, you spend $100k on a degree from CIA and you're making corn nuts?!? Nachos with mexican pimento cheese. I pictured dipping some delicate salty chips in a warm mixture of interesting, dancing flavors that cling to the chip. What I got was akin to a cheese ball that I would spread on triscuits and bland, starchy chips that I'm pretty sure were from a bag. And let me tell you what happens when you have to spread what amounts to a lump of cream cheese on a tortilla chip.... it crumbles in your hand. Did nobody test this? Then, we hedged our bets on the green salsa, which allegedly was supposed to be spicy. It was the most unappetizing, frigid blob of whirled pea baby food, ever.... and tasted about as much, as well. ZERO spice - or flavor. That's the first time I've ever left a basket of chips and salsa undevoured. Let's just say it just got worse. Much worse. So bad that, in fact, my boyfriend nearly vomited barbacoa taco on our way downtown to get a real dinner. The cherry on top of this crap sundae was when the server, without our prompting, apologized for the format of the check. It was designed for "their members," so just ignore that part of it. I almost said, "It's ok. We're white and make well over 6-figures, but feel bad about it, so we belong here. We're your demographic. We understand." And that's what happens when hipsters play "restaurant."

    The tacos are great and good brew deals. Good service. I just can't get with the vibe though. The design is well done but the whole complex feels so wrong and out of place for PC. The clientele was so preppy it felt like falling into a Mt P wormhole. I guess thats Mixsons future.....the chilled out out funky atmosphere was nice while it lasted. SIGH Don't forget your Polo before yogoyo.

    Went for restaurant week because the menu sounded so good. When we arrived we waited for our table about 20 minutes. Once seated we placed our order and then waited about an hour and a 30 minutes for our food. When the food arrived it was cold. The tacos were overly spicy, so much so that you couldn't taste the other ingredients or the seasonings that may have been used. I may be wrong, but the fish for the fish tacos seemed to be a pre-coated frozen product that was just put in the fryer, nothing fresh. I probably would have been more forgiving of some of this, but by the time we walked out my wallet was about $48 lighter (only a single beer order, no soda. 2 people). Ouch. If your looking for trendy tacos try Taco Boy on Huger St. If you want the traditional American tacos and free chips try Santis', you'll do much better at either place.

    Basico is a 3 1/2 stars in my book. Other reviewers mentioned not liking the decor but I loved it. They've got a great outdoor eating area and the indoor space is decorated to look clean & contemporary without looking too modern. No, they weren't going for the most comfortable seating but who cares. My husband and I went for happy hour and while they didn't appear to have a HH menu (or a drink menu) we ordered their pineapple margaritas which were great. We shared the fried chicken tacos and they were delicious. A nice unique take on a taco for sure. The side was even better than the taco however. We got the butterbean tomato salad (which costs a bit extra) and it was unreal good. Their green goddess dressing was yummy. I'll be ordering it again real soon. The only disappointment was the queso. It was actually pretty gross and tasted like heavy cream. For a mexican joint they really need to step up their queso game. Overall, I love the look of Basico and the majority of the food was on point. We'll definitely be back again.

    Excellent addition to the Park Circle restaurant scene. Adventurous and on-point Mexican food done well. Price point is perfect and the atmosphere is like nothing I have seen in this area or the South in general. My highlights from the menu: baby octopus salad, grilled peach and lamb bacon torta, ceviche, and the fish taco. If you want to try something extremely unique and outstanding, go for the Cabeza taco. Drinks were very affordable and seemed to all be made from scratch. I really liked the Chelada and margaritas. All in all, I will definitely be going back very soon and really liked how the chefs are doing things up there.

    While the food is pricy, the service, taste, and quality make it worth it. The Mexican rice is absolutely sinful, so rich, and so delicious. My favorite dishes are the grilled shrimp tacos and the poblana rajas quesadilla. The vegetables they use are so tasty, and the shrimp tastes very fresh. Everything about their food is just so wonderful. I would highly recommend trying this place!!!

    Easily some of the worst service in Charleston. I understand it takes a little more attention to deal with parties of 7 but then why let us make a reservation if you can't handle the volume? Drink orders took too long with the waitress not providing a happy hour drink menu until AFTER we ordered our drinks. Appetizers came out reasonably quick, (but it was chips and salsa-what do you expect?) but the entrees took FOREVER. A couple who joined us 30 minutes into the meal got their happy hour taco orders 20 minutes BEFORE we even got our food. When the food did begin to arrive, our friend's "basico bowl" contained wilted greens, signifying it had been under a heat lamp for at least 10-15 minutes. In addition, another friend's coleslaw contained a shrimp! Glad he didn't have a food allergy!? The manager was incompetent, not offering to comp appetizers for the table nor clearing out the dirty plates and glasses. He did comp our friend's basico bowl, but a friend also got charged $5 for a tiny, extra side of guacamole. Are you freaking kidding me? They also wouldn't split the checks per couple, they just repeated that they could only split "up to 5 ways." Maybe this should have been brought up before the meal? I normally don't write reviews like this, but it was that bad and I would be embarrassed to take friends or family there ever again. Stick to Charleston, not North Charleston!

    Average food at above average prices. We arrive there on a weekend. 2 of us were there, and were waiting on 4 other friends, who were 20 minutes behind us. It took a long time for the waiter to tend to us. We had to signal for service. We finally put our drink order in, which was placed about 20 minutes after our arrival. Our friends had just pulled into the parking lot when we finally placed a drink order. After they arrived, we spent another 15 minutes before they could place their drink order. The worst thing about the slow service was that the place was dead! Only 2 other tables were occupied. We ordered chips and salsa, which was pretty good. For entrees, most of us ordered tacos. My brisket taco was tender, moist, and flavorful. It was full of meat. My fish taco was decent but average, and my al pastor was bland and lacking meat. I got 3 tacos and a choice of a side dish for $13. You can get the same tacos for about $2-2.50 a piece in authentic mexican places. Overall the food was underwhelming, especially given the high price you pay. Service was slow. When we left, around 8:30 pm, there were no customers in the restaurant. And this was a Saturday evening. We will not return.

    The tacos are very unique. Many flavor profiles with fresh ingredients. Really loved the shrimp taco. I ordered the grilled corn...ate it & ordered more. It has a lime kick and very good. One comment I have is that, if you are really hungry, I would order extra food. This is a place you really savor the different & unique flavors. I do think the atmosphere is sterile and not as inviting as it should be.

    mixon has stirred a lot of mixed sentiments here in the circle. one yelper discribed it as a "mount plesant worm hole." I find that hilarious and completely true. that being said, basico really does have a good staff... at least the ones that stick around. they should work on that high turnover though. as far as the food, their regular menu is a bit pricy for the portions, but its really good. creative, flavorful and keeps me coming back for more.

    Went last night for a quick dinner, it was awesome! Such a great little restaurant in North Charleston...Really happy this place is here, hopefully it will start a trend of new hip restaurants in an otherwise barren North Charleston area. We had the nachos to start, which were tasty and huge, topped with some superbly seasoned chicken and other standard nacho accoutrement. We tried some of their homemade hot sauces and were very impressed! They went very well with my house margarita, which was perfectly balance, clean and not too sweet. Very good marg! We probably could have stopped eating at that point, but we continued our Basico journey with some tacos. I got a pork taco and one steak taco, which were awesome! The pork was a tad dry, but nonetheless very well-seasoned, the flank steak was perfect...I love a good flank! (Also on my taco was pickled radish and red onion...very good combination) Their tortilla chips/ tortillas are made in-house and are super authentic and delicious. I got the corn tortillas, being gluten free it is very exciting to know you can enjoy an awesome GF menu without missing out on awesome food! The service was great, it was pretty empty when we came in, but the small dining room quickly filled up. The decor is very cool and modern, and makes me feel like I'm in Miami. Very cool spot off the beaten path, I will be back!

    We had lunch here today and honestly I am a mexican food addict. I am from California and pretty much had mexican food almost everyday growing up. This place is good, not its not authentic and it is a fancy, gourmet version of mexican but the flavors are spot on! The mexican rice is a must, I liken it to a Mexican version of Mac & Cheese. It's very tasty and the Enchiladas with Lemon Cream Sauce and Verde sauce are incredibly good. The ambience is cool and the kitchen is rooted in a mexican flavor palette but respects the quality of its ingredients to shine through, don't go expecting Santi's type mexican this is not the place. PS didn't see a corn nut...

We stepped in kind of confused with the staff, in t-shirts and shorts, staring at us, unsure if they were going to seat us or if we should seat ourselves. The place was empty at 6pm on a Saturday, save 2 guys at the small bar - which in itself causes one to feel like an intruder. There is a barrier separating the main restaurant from the Mixon Bath and Racquet Club where there was some action of other customers. We asked if we could sit outside on the other side of the barrier when we were swiftly told that that side was for "their members only." We la dee, freakin' da. Therefore, we were relegated to the cold, hard benches and modern, but uncomfortable chairs. It felt like TCBY - except their furniture actually has cushioning, inviting one to stay a while. There is a large industrial fan in the center of the place that blows frigid, air conditioned air non-stop. Although it looks cool, I noticed several patrons walk in, sit in the middle of the restaurant, then move because of the wind tunnel. Like everything else at Basico, the focus is more on appearance than experience. The menu was limited to bites of tacos that tried their best to smash a bunch of "hip" ingredients together and call it "street food." I sure wish this trend would end. There were also some variations of quesadilla and some snacks, but those were equally as random, and ultimately, unappetizing. "Lamb bacon?" Bacon is not a lamb. Lamb is not bacon. WTH? Just call it "smoked, cured lamb" instead of trying to capitalize on the bacon bandwagon. A "cabeza" taco? Just call it "head cheese" and then realize that you're in North Charleston and take that nonsense downtown. I then noticed, with relief, that we were given the "Lunch" menu. Phew! There was hope yet! But wait.... "that's just the menu we're working with now. We're still trying to figure things out." Rats. Corn nuts with bleu cheese powder and a carbonated kool aid-sweet strawberry sangria with a lemon and lime slice floating in it should have tipped us to just cut our losses and go. It was like gas station corn nuts with a coating of dried paste that, even after spitting them into my napkin, wouldn't allow the horrid flavor to dissipate. And sangria does not do well with bubbles. It just tasted like cheap, expired wine. My thought to this point was, you spend $100k on a degree from CIA and you're making corn nuts?!? Nachos with mexican pimento cheese. I pictured dipping some delicate salty chips in a warm mixture of interesting, dancing flavors that cling to the chip. What I got was akin to a cheese ball that I would spread on triscuits and bland, starchy chips that I'm pretty sure were from a bag. And let me tell you what happens when you have to spread what amounts to a lump of cream cheese on a tortilla chip.... it crumbles in your hand. Did nobody test this? Then, we hedged our bets on the green salsa, which allegedly was supposed to be spicy. It was the most unappetizing, frigid blob of whirled pea baby food, ever.... and tasted about as much, as well. ZERO spice - or flavor. That's the first time I've ever left a basket of chips and salsa undevoured. Let's just say it just got worse. Much worse. So bad that, in fact, my boyfriend nearly vomited barbacoa taco on our way downtown to get a real dinner. The cherry on top of this crap sundae was when the server, without our prompting, apologized for the format of the check. It was designed for "their members," so just ignore that part of it. I almost said, "It's ok. We're white and make well over 6-figures, but feel bad about it, so we belong here. We're your demographic. We understand." And that's what happens when hipsters play "restaurant."

    The tacos are great and good brew deals. Good service. I just can't get with the vibe though. The design is well done but the whole complex feels so wrong and out of place for PC. The clientele was so preppy it felt like falling into a Mt P wormhole. I guess thats Mixsons future.....the chilled out out funky atmosphere was nice while it lasted. SIGH Don't forget your Polo before yogoyo.

    Went for restaurant week because the menu sounded so good. When we arrived we waited for our table about 20 minutes. Once seated we placed our order and then waited about an hour and a 30 minutes for our food. When the food arrived it was cold. The tacos were overly spicy, so much so that you couldn't taste the other ingredients or the seasonings that may have been used. I may be wrong, but the fish for the fish tacos seemed to be a pre-coated frozen product that was just put in the fryer, nothing fresh. I probably would have been more forgiving of some of this, but by the time we walked out my wallet was about $48 lighter (only a single beer order, no soda. 2 people). Ouch. If your looking for trendy tacos try Taco Boy on Huger St. If you want the traditional American tacos and free chips try Santis', you'll do much better at either place.

    Basico is a 3 1/2 stars in my book. Other reviewers mentioned not liking the decor but I loved it. They've got a great outdoor eating area and the indoor space is decorated to look clean & contemporary without looking too modern. No, they weren't going for the most comfortable seating but who cares. My husband and I went for happy hour and while they didn't appear to have a HH menu (or a drink menu) we ordered their pineapple margaritas which were great. We shared the fried chicken tacos and they were delicious. A nice unique take on a taco for sure. The side was even better than the taco however. We got the butterbean tomato salad (which costs a bit extra) and it was unreal good. Their green goddess dressing was yummy. I'll be ordering it again real soon. The only disappointment was the queso. It was actually pretty gross and tasted like heavy cream. For a mexican joint they really need to step up their queso game. Overall, I love the look of Basico and the majority of the food was on point. We'll definitely be back again.

    Excellent addition to the Park Circle restaurant scene. Adventurous and on-point Mexican food done well. Price point is perfect and the atmosphere is like nothing I have seen in this area or the South in general. My highlights from the menu: baby octopus salad, grilled peach and lamb bacon torta, ceviche, and the fish taco. If you want to try something extremely unique and outstanding, go for the Cabeza taco. Drinks were very affordable and seemed to all be made from scratch. I really liked the Chelada and margaritas. All in all, I will definitely be going back very soon and really liked how the chefs are doing things up there.

    While the food is pricy, the service, taste, and quality make it worth it. The Mexican rice is absolutely sinful, so rich, and so delicious. My favorite dishes are the grilled shrimp tacos and the poblana rajas quesadilla. The vegetables they use are so tasty, and the shrimp tastes very fresh. Everything about their food is just so wonderful. I would highly recommend trying this place!!!

    Easily some of the worst service in Charleston. I understand it takes a little more attention to deal with parties of 7 but then why let us make a reservation if you can't handle the volume? Drink orders took too long with the waitress not providing a happy hour drink menu until AFTER we ordered our drinks. Appetizers came out reasonably quick, (but it was chips and salsa-what do you expect?) but the entrees took FOREVER. A couple who joined us 30 minutes into the meal got their happy hour taco orders 20 minutes BEFORE we even got our food. When the food did begin to arrive, our friend's "basico bowl" contained wilted greens, signifying it had been under a heat lamp for at least 10-15 minutes. In addition, another friend's coleslaw contained a shrimp! Glad he didn't have a food allergy!? The manager was incompetent, not offering to comp appetizers for the table nor clearing out the dirty plates and glasses. He did comp our friend's basico bowl, but a friend also got charged $5 for a tiny, extra side of guacamole. Are you freaking kidding me? They also wouldn't split the checks per couple, they just repeated that they could only split "up to 5 ways." Maybe this should have been brought up before the meal? I normally don't write reviews like this, but it was that bad and I would be embarrassed to take friends or family there ever again. Stick to Charleston, not North Charleston!

    Average food at above average prices. We arrive there on a weekend. 2 of us were there, and were waiting on 4 other friends, who were 20 minutes behind us. It took a long time for the waiter to tend to us. We had to signal for service. We finally put our drink order in, which was placed about 20 minutes after our arrival. Our friends had just pulled into the parking lot when we finally placed a drink order. After they arrived, we spent another 15 minutes before they could place their drink order. The worst thing about the slow service was that the place was dead! Only 2 other tables were occupied. We ordered chips and salsa, which was pretty good. For entrees, most of us ordered tacos. My brisket taco was tender, moist, and flavorful. It was full of meat. My fish taco was decent but average, and my al pastor was bland and lacking meat. I got 3 tacos and a choice of a side dish for $13. You can get the same tacos for about $2-2.50 a piece in authentic mexican places. Overall the food was underwhelming, especially given the high price you pay. Service was slow. When we left, around 8:30 pm, there were no customers in the restaurant. And this was a Saturday evening. We will not return.

    The tacos are very unique. Many flavor profiles with fresh ingredients. Really loved the shrimp taco. I ordered the grilled corn...ate it & ordered more. It has a lime kick and very good. One comment I have is that, if you are really hungry, I would order extra food. This is a place you really savor the different & unique flavors. I do think the atmosphere is sterile and not as inviting as it should be.

    mixon has stirred a lot of mixed sentiments here in the circle. one yelper discribed it as a "mount plesant worm hole." I find that hilarious and completely true. that being said, basico really does have a good staff... at least the ones that stick around. they should work on that high turnover though. as far as the food, their regular menu is a bit pricy for the portions, but its really good. creative, flavorful and keeps me coming back for more.

    Went last night for a quick dinner, it was awesome! Such a great little restaurant in North Charleston...Really happy this place is here, hopefully it will start a trend of new hip restaurants in an otherwise barren North Charleston area. We had the nachos to start, which were tasty and huge, topped with some superbly seasoned chicken and other standard nacho accoutrement. We tried some of their homemade hot sauces and were very impressed! They went very well with my house margarita, which was perfectly balance, clean and not too sweet. Very good marg! We probably could have stopped eating at that point, but we continued our Basico journey with some tacos. I got a pork taco and one steak taco, which were awesome! The pork was a tad dry, but nonetheless very well-seasoned, the flank steak was perfect...I love a good flank! (Also on my taco was pickled radish and red onion...very good combination) Their tortilla chips/ tortillas are made in-house and are super authentic and delicious. I got the corn tortillas, being gluten free it is very exciting to know you can enjoy an awesome GF menu without missing out on awesome food! The service was great, it was pretty empty when we came in, but the small dining room quickly filled up. The decor is very cool and modern, and makes me feel like I'm in Miami. Very cool spot off the beaten path, I will be back!

    We had lunch here today and honestly I am a mexican food addict. I am from California and pretty much had mexican food almost everyday growing up. This place is good, not its not authentic and it is a fancy, gourmet version of mexican but the flavors are spot on! The mexican rice is a must, I liken it to a Mexican version of Mac & Cheese. It's very tasty and the Enchiladas with Lemon Cream Sauce and Verde sauce are incredibly good. The ambience is cool and the kitchen is rooted in a mexican flavor palette but respects the quality of its ingredients to shine through, don't go expecting Santi's type mexican this is not the place. PS didn't see a corn nut...

    There are some places worth the drive from downtown to Park Circle and some that just aren't. After experiencing both brunch and dinner at Basico, I found the food to be among the best North Charleston has to offer. The cuisine is much more authentic than Americanized like I was expecting, with options like fresh chips, unique tacos, killer quesadillas and great craft cocktails, many of which are made with coconut water. I love that fresh chips and salsa come complimentary to your table to start, but think ordering a unique kind of salsa off the menu for $3 each is worth it to share with the table- the mango and smoked walnut are my two favorites! For dinner, two tacos for $8 or three for $11 is a great option. The tacos are simplistic but filled with unique condiments that elevate them from good to awesome- like the habenero crema on the baja fish taco and yellow mole on the brisket taco. The street corn is also not to be missed, topped with tons of cilantro and salty cotija cheese. For brunch, I love to split salsa with the table and order one of the hash plates- like the brisket with pimento gravy that cures a case of whatever fun you had the night before. Basico isn't your typical Mexican restaurant. The food is much more refined than your typical taco platter with rice and beans.     I think this is a great little find in N. Charleston... Kinda right off the HWY, so we always swing by on the way back to Columbia! Love, love, love Mixson Market, the concept is awesome (farmers market, apartments, pool, modern homes, market etc). We've been on Saturday both times, around 4pm/5pm and we've always had the outside seating area to ourselves... it's quiet and low-key despite the pool being around the corner. The menu is different which appealed to us... not the standard boring Mexican fare you'd normally find at chain "local" restaurants in the south (don't want to name drop). I've had tacos (all non-meat) and the enchiladas for entrees and the guac, cheese dip, and chorizo queso for apps... The star for me is the GUACAMOLE... so fresh with a little kick. If you're in Charleston (or on your way out), you should swing by!

    Basico is what I refer to as "fancy Mexican". Their prices are above your standard basic Mexican/Tex-Mex food, although the tacos are decently priced. That being said, happy hour prices are good and they make a great margarita. I got the chicken nachos, as they were $6 instead of the usual $11 during happy hour. They are pretty big and more than enough for one person. The chips tasted excellent as did most of the toppings. The chicken was kind of flavorless on its own. You can get chorizo as well, which I would try if I got them again in hopes of a little more flavor. Also, the dining room isn't huge so it's probably not ideal for larger groups, but they have nice outdoor space.

    Staff here is incredibly friendly. All of their corn tortillas are house made and the food is delicious. A little off the beaten path of Park Circle, Basico is a nice little place in the Mixson Market. After only going a few times the staff remembers our names and treats us like family. The salsas are all very good and their tacos are awesome. My favorite is the Hot Chicken tacos and the Al Pastor tacos. The venue is a descent size and they have room for large groups. They're draft beer selection is a little small, but they have all the local 'usual suspects' in the cooler. My favorite being Westbrook IPA and Holy City Uncomfortably Friendly IPA. I highly recommend checking out Basico. Lunch time is never too busy and the service is always great.

    My first and only experience with Básico thus far has been during brunch. I heard these guys were doing some unique stuff for brunch and I was not disappointed. They have a pretty delicious bowl of eggs and chorizo hash that will cure any hangover after an exciting Saturday night. They also have a great beer selection(which also helps). I really loved the chicken and churros though; definitely recommend!

    This was a difficult place to find. We get here for lunch and was seated immediately and ask what we wanted to drink. We order Salsa Trio. (We are not fans when restaurants charge for chips and salsa unless it's worth it or the price is reasonable.) Within minutes a nice lady came to take our order and thankfully ahead of a couple of bigger tables that came in right after we were seated. We ordered the taco plates and a Pacifico on Draught. We got some chips and salsa but it wasn't the Salsa Trio we ordered. Intrigued since so other table had a Salsa Trio we wanted to ask our server but she had disappeared for what seemed like a long time but it wasn't. Our entrees came out and we asked our server about the Pacifico and if what we got was in place of the Salsa Trio we ordered. No that's just the start. Let me say the food is really good and it's tacos so food came out quickly. We were only in there for an hour but all the waiting for the Pacifico and it took and yes I timed it 11 minutes for us to pay the tab. She was nice enough not to charge us for the chips and salsa and the Pacifico without any provocation from us. This is a really nice place and the food is top notch. One hour was a reasonable time to have lunch but our lunch could have possibly been only 35 mins from entrance to exit versus waiting for a beer and to pay our tab.
