This place is very, very cute and local. Small with seating upstairs but they homemake all their pastries and the coffee is actually really good. I wish there was more seating but I don't think most of their business are simply coffee connoisseurs like myself.

We first thought this place was closed as we approached, but once we crossed the street we realized it's not! The building looks a bit shabby from the street (read: historic), but has been renovated inside in trendy fashion. Great pastries & breads, cookies, and tasty coffee. Good place to sit and read, work, or chat. They have seating indoors and out.

Horrible experience when ordering Thanksgiving baked goods. My online order apparently "got lost" and when I went to pick it up, the day before Thanksgiving, I was SOL. No explanation for their mistake. Total garbage. These people are amateurs and this place deserves not a single star.

Hard to find. In a small house converted to this piece of heaven. The bread is the best , period. I know because I've been searching. The pastries to die for. The owner used to work at Bouchon in California, a Bakery, that I've been to many times . He has brought his art here to us. Find this place, you won't be disappointed. Oh yea, a great variety of coffee's for you to try. FrankG

I love this coffee shop, I go almost every day. The staff is incredibly personable, which isn't always true for other coffee shops in the area. They remember my order and take the time to engage with me and are continually friendly, no matter how busy they get. Not only is the service fantastic, but their coffee is extremely well brewed and their pastries are to DIE for. I'm not gluten free, but their gluten free Monster cookie is addicting and sold throughout many local distributors, like Persimmon Cafe and the Vegetable Bin. If you haven't stopped by Brown's yet, get out of your Starbucks Cinnamon Dolce latte rut and go grab a decent cup of coffee at this lovely local institution.

Tasty baked goods and the coffee on brew today is wonderful. Vibe and decor are great, with the outdoor seating on the porch even better. I feel the prices are a bit too high to make this an everyday morning stop, but for a local (non-chain) bakery/coffee shop in downtown Charleston, this is definitely a good place to go.

Honestly the most bland iced mocha. Overpriced and sizes are small. I rather go to wild flour a block away.

Garden & Gun was right, this place rocks. I'm a fan of Parisian boulangerie and the croissants, muffins and pastries here are excellent. The siracha version would kill with sausage, eggs and grits but standalone? Not so much for the traditionalist. Barista dude was way cool with free advice about parking and ticket avoidance.

Decent coffee, good pastries and such... Biggest problem is how long it takes to get served. If you're the only one there its fast and quick but if there is even 1 other person it seems to take innumerable longer (like 5-10 minutes per person longer). This morning when I was attempting to get a cup of coffee pre-work I waited behind 3 other people for 10 minutes before giving up as the guy at the counter seemed more interested in making small talk then helping the line move along quickly and efficiently. Will I go back, more than likely... if for no other reason than my office is around the corner.

This lace has got to be the best bakery in charleston. The croissants, baguettes, English muffins, cookies and everything else was exceptional. Yes. I tried all of those items on my first visit. You will too if you open your mind and accept their wonderfulness in.

tried a mocha latte and the pear croissant. the latte was really just an iced coffee with milk. the pear croissant was tasty but had a very tough texture -- almost like a day-old.

I know about this place because it supplies my favorite brunch place across the street with fresh baked bread for French toast and Benedicts! I decided to check this place out finally! Grabbed my go-to's: a latte and a chocolate croissant. If a place can't get that right-- GAME OVER. I would have taken a picture of the chocolate and peanut butter croissant I just had but I devoured it too quickly. So good! Airy and the chocolate was actually baked into the croissant. Not like other places I've been in Charleston! It was a little pricey but... YOLO!! Friendly staff too! Can't wait to grab some bread and make my own French toast!! By far best bakery I've been to in Charleston!!

Amazing baked goods, good atmosphere. Good replacement for Hope and Union (coffee is a lot faster). If you're studying there are about 6 tables, with good access to outlets, etc. Space is similar feel to Hope and Union, though they've cut some space out for the bakery. Must head for baked goods and simple coffee. Fast WiFi. Owner is a #Barves fan, so you can chat sports probably too.

Hands down the best bakery in Charleston. The staff is extremely laid back and friendly.

My wife and I checked this place out after a random discussion with a local. It worked out beautifully. Delicious, excellent service, chill environment, I mean these are the places I like to stumble into. I had the chocolate croissant and a coconut ice coffee both excellent. The wife had something I don't even remember what it was but when I put it in my mouth I was happy. What else can I ask for besides emotional satisfaction from a caloric rich food?

Such a cute place! We got there after 4pm, so there were slim pickins on the racks. We scored a pecan coffee cake though and it was delicious! Neat spot to kick back on the porch with a warm coffee or tea and whatever baked treat your heart desires.

I had never been to Browns Court Bakery until recently but felt as though I was meeting up with an old friend. Although I hadn't ever been, I've been a patron of the bakery for quite some time. Whether you know it or not, Browns Court supplies many of your favorite local restaurants with all their bread. Sometimes without asking, I can tell the bread is brought it from Browns Court. I only stopped in to meet someone for coffee but, now that I've been brought into this bread lair, I'll be back for sure. If only I had know before that I could come straight to the source for gorging on delicious carbohydrates!

Cinnamon roll was phenomenal. Crisp, cream cheese frosting, lightly sweet and actually edible!! If Wildflour's is too sweet for you, come here instead! Pleasant atmosphere, smells clean - no wet coffee/rag smell like in some bakery/coffee places. Got 2 croissants, cinnamon roll, pretzel stick and latte - $19

Visiting town, heard about Brown's from the folks at Artisan Meat Share, where we asked about good croissants for breakfast. Now we're posted up here the following morning for some morning work and coffee. Coffee is good, baked things are excellent, upstairs porch seating is a good setting for some computer work. Lucky locals!

We were traveling through Charleston and I was tired of the plastic coffee shops that clearly hadn't baked anything themselves... so I did a little research and found this place. I loved seeing 20 bags of King Arthur flour in the front room. We got the Sriracha Croissant., the pecan sticky bun, and the bacon cheddar scone along with coffee drinks and hot chocolate for the child (who also got the Sriracha Croissant 'cause that's how he is). They were all quite good, and the selection of items was excellent. The cookie selection was mind boggling. Best of all was being able to see the bakery in the back. Things were tasty and fresh. I expected more of a bacon richness to the scone, more sharpness to the croissant (which was perfectly flaky and very very buttery), but the pecan sticky roll was exactly the classic take I wanted. The very very Charlestonian floor plan was a big plus for us, but it also meant that the bakery kept the interior quite toasty in mid-July. Outside was even muggier and hotter. We're also Coloradans, not used to the heat and humidity, but it did detract a little from a perfect experience for us.

I lived in NYC for 11 years and never found the perfect chocolate chip cookie. Who knew I just had to move to Charleston! Thanks to Brown's Court Bakery for striking the perfect balance between chewy and crispy, and sweet and salty. Moreover, the staff is friendly and eager to inform patrons about new items, like the kale focaccia. It's nice to support a team of people who enjoy their work.

So incredible. We walked in and were immediately enveloped with the most incredible scent, and my Belgian girlfriend said it smelled exactly like a European bakery; she also said the chocolate croissants were the best she's eaten in the US. A gorgeous and relaxing way for two tourists to spend a few hours enjoying coffee drinks and Mexican coke and using the free wifi to map out our trip.

Best bread in town, had breakfast with fresh from the oven baguette with butter and cafe au lait, like being in Paris...

We custom ordered fruit tarts and key lime tarts from Brown's Court for our wedding reception and they were DELIGHTFUL! Seriously, the tarts were amazing and everyone loved them. Their service was good; they were helpful and the price was right. We highly recommend them!

Great coffee, ambience, and staff! As a lactose-intolerant Seattlite coffee "snob", it's hard to find a place when I'm travelling that can craft a soy latte, much less also afford a comfortable environment to linger in. The moment I walked into Browns Court, I felt the awesomeness. Tasty pastries and fresh bread, a delicious drink, nice folks, and bright open spaces to sit and enjoy it all. Bonus: they are selling king cakes, w baby Jesus baked inside, this week for $12!

I used to buy baguette there on a daily base more or less, always came by after work around 5.30pm since they have the best baguette in town, hands down. Unfortunately I cannot call it bakery anymore because they haven't have any more baguette at 5-6pm when I tried to get some. The last 4 evenings I went home with empty pockets. They used to have at least 10 or more waiting for me. I was used that they sometimes are sold out during daytime but accepted that. I will not go there anymore and instead put my energy to pick it up from somewhere else. I am very disappointed because we love their bread, but ...whats the point if they don't have it??? You just lost a passionate client WTF

Great cookies! We came here in the evening and the guy behind the counter was a character! Wish we lived in the area for the cookies, croissant, and hilarious staff.

A phenomenal bakery with the best customer service I've received in a long time. I had a special order for a cake that I needed made -- a king cake, what's usually only made during Mardi Gras -- and this place stepped up and went above and beyond. They agreed to specially make the cake for me (even though I live on the West Coast and was doing a pre-order several weeks in advance) and it ended up making the birthday surprise that it was perfect. The cake itself was delicious -- baked and iced to perfection -- and the evening could not have gone better. A huge thank you to David and the entire team at this bakery. I will continue recommending people here for a long time to come. 6 stars, if possible.

I am reminded of The Police as I enter Browns Court Bakery; not the law enforcer type who I am sure is out ticketing my Illegally parked car ( oops!) but Stings group. "Every little thing they do is magic!" This is a bakery, folks. Not a cute coffee shop/bakery. There is no espresso machine or pour over contraption fronting some tasty treats. Nothing fancy here as these folks are baking up a storm in the wee hours in the back kitchen. It's clean and cozy, like Cool Grandmas kitchen. I was once told that they supply some eateries with product and a good amount is sold out front. A huge multi-decked cooling rack flashes its tantalizing cookies, sweet rolls and the like just begging you to get into some trouble. I always oblige and never regret the infraction:) They offer a little section to select and bag your own tasty gluten treat of Brioche rolls; Hawaiian Rolls; English Muffin; baguette; sourdough; or loaf of whatever always beckons me to buy more than I can possibly eat. The prices are good, the staff is friendly and there is a cute porch inviting one to loiter with a simple cup of Joe and a baked treat. Arrest me now and throw away the key! If not, I will return to the scene of my crime of gluttony at this magical bakery.

I stopped at Brown's Court Bakery on my way out of Charleston and while the sticky bun and the roll I bought were ok they were heavy and over kneaded. Flavor wise, this is just a 3 star place. There are plenty of other great options out there.

The coffee and baguettes here are excellent.

The bread here is amazing. I am definitely a fan of their pretzel bread, baguettes, hawaiian rolls, and their sandwich buns. I've stopped here a number of times to pick up baked goods for dinner, and it really takes my meals up a notch. I love this place way more than any of the other bakeries around town. I've never stayed for coffee or anything, so I don't know how the prep or taste is regarding any of the other reviews, but the bread is definitely top notch.

I can't speak to the baked goods, because even though the hours are listed as 7-7 daily, they close at 3:00 Sunday. We went back on Monday and they only had 1 gluten free item. So, I still can't speak to the baked goods. It shows up under gluten free search, but apparently it isn't so much.

I'm reviewing Brown's Court Bakery as a potential work or study spot: basically, I wish this place was still Hope & Union. Here's what was good about Brown's Court: the pastries. The artisan bread loaves did look good, though I didn't try any, and they do have a baked goods happy hour (all pastries and the like are slightly discounted from 5-7pm). What was lackluster? The prices, the coffee prep, and the lack of air conditioning upstairs during Charleston's oppressive mid summer season. Major meh, but I'll still probably return at some point due to its super convenient location.

Awesome bakery in an old house! TONS of freshly made pastries everyday. Coffee was great! Seating on porch is really nice. The cafe au lait muffin was great as well as the chocolate coconut macaroon.

When I've gone in over the past few months, there's strangely no one ever at the counter? I wait a few minutes for someone to emerge from the back area, once they see me. Not a big deal, more unusual than anything. The solo barista is also the solo cashier, has to take orders, disappear to make drinks and then ring people up. That's a busy one person job...

If you want those amazing Hawaiian rolls served at The Ordinary's bar, come here. They're two bucks cheaper. If you want gluten-free cookies you wouldn't believe are gluten-free, even as I scanned them with my iCeliac app and showed you the 0% readout, because there's no way anything this dense, cakey and addictive can be without the power of wheat, come here. Chocolate Chip and Monster are not to be missed. If you thought you were going to your buddy's place for a little craft beer/Veronica Mars marathon, but instead you open the door to a scant counter, trays of just-made croissants, turnovers and red velvet sweet rolls, you're already here. Pull up a chair. I want to eat all of it, and not just because some of allofit happens to be hot dog and cheddar pretzel sticks. Day-old goodies are 50% off!

Good, strong tea and yummy molasses cookie in a cool house-style location. For some reason, I thought they'd have a bigger selection of treats. But I did stop by on a weekday afternoon, so maybe it was just an off time.

Half coffeehouse. Half bakery. Kind of confusing. I like Brown's Court a lot. It's one of the few coffee shops in Charleston. It's mostly great, but sometimes I feel like they can't decide where to focus their energy. Pros: - Baked good are delicious. - Great brewed coffee (counter culture). - Friendly employees. - Half price second-day items. - Wifi. - Two floors of seating and a porch with hammock. Cons - Espresso drinks aren't so great. Baristas often double as bakers and don't always know how to make drinks properly. - The coffeehouse part feels like an afterthought and it's clear that most of their profit comes from selling custom baked goods to local restaurants. - Some of the baked goods can be pricey. $9 for a latte and a sticky bun?

Browns court is my favorite bakery/coffee shop in charleston. It's atmosphere is very uniquely charleston as it is in an old charleston single. The hammocks on the porch and decorations are found no where else in charleston. The coffee is very bitter so it may not be great for everyone, but the pastries and breads are some of the best I've had. In the back is a box of day old bread that's half price and tastes just as good as the new stuff. Tourists and natives alike should make this a regular spot

My sticky bun was very, very dry. Even the cookie tasted a day old. Won't be coming back.

When I was on vacation in Charleston, I had coffee (cappuccino, latte) every morning here as well as a scone (cheddar & bacon is pretty fabulous). Have to say I LOVE this place, the ambience and the fresh smell of bread and just the selection, super cute and I never run out of things to try, love!!!!

Holy wow this place has great baked goods! My favorite so far is the pretzel roll, but the Sriracha croissant and cinnamon roll are darn good too.

Best bread in town. So many restaurants use their bread daily. Great coffee, delicious cookies (especially the gf chocolate chip ones) and they have daily quiche also. Great to have in my neighborhood!

The latte was not half bad. The plain croissant was standard. Cute neighborhood coffee shop. Given it is a bakery, it would have been great to have breakfast begal sandwiches or something more substantial.

Two words: Sriracha Croissant. I've only been here a couple times, but everything I've tried has been great. The aforementioned sriracha croissant was delicious! And one time my girlfriend went by in the afternoon and was gifted some pastries as it was late in the day. I'll be back.

Cute little bakery in a house. It's off the beaten path, but well worth the trip! Pastries are fresh and taste great! This looks like a great place for students to study. There are a couple tables downstairs and four tables upstairs. Nicely decorated. The gal taking our order was friendly.

  • Emily B.

This place has the best baguettes & really good coffee. The pastries I've tried have also been pretty good. There's limited outdoor seating on the porch, but I'd you can grab a seat there, you're in for a nice, relaxing morning.

Love the coffee. The new owners are great. And who doesn't love fresh baked pastries and bread?! It's in a sweet house with a porch. Mmmm coffee on porches! Fabulous atmosphere.

Sweet staff, lovely tea, and heavenly scones. For a while they only had a couple awkward hammock seats set out on the porch, but have since put in real tables and chairs out there, juuuuust to make sure that I don't plan on going ANYWHERE ELSE to laze about all summer.
