The best BBQ smokey flavor I found! And what a bargain for the price! And has homemade style southern sides. The only problem is the wait to be served, and closes at 3pm, and closed on weekends! I also wish they had a thicker BBQ sauce--although I love their vinegar based sauce's flavor. I'll be back---when I get a weekday off from work!

I hate that this place is only opened for 4 hours a day and is closed on the weekend. The chicken is ok, don't know what everyone is talking about but the pulled pork, corn bread, and mac&cheese are on point. The corn and collard greens are pretty good at well. I'd go back there but I hate beaufort...

If you're passing through Beaufort, SC, you absolutely MUST stop at Sgt. White's. And if you fancy yourself a BBQ or soul food connoisseur, make a special trip! The place doesn't look like much, a little run-down diner on the side of a busy road, but the tell-tale statue of the the Sargent himself in his camo chef's hat out in front gives it away. When I first walked in, I was skeptical. The food is all up front in big steam trays and doesn't look very appetizing, to be quite honest. However, I was encouraged by the open wood-fired smoker behind the counter, with loads of meat in it. Looks couldn't have been more deceiving. I ordered up some pork ribs, mac and cheese, and green beans. Each of them was spectacular. And the corn bread might have been the best I've ever had. They don't make better BBQ joints than this. Don't let the look fool you. This place is fantastic. The next time I'm within 50 miles of Beaufort, I'm stopping by.

We vacation near Beaufort every 3 years or so and I have had Sgt. White's on my list but hadn't gone there until last week. This is a true road food stop. The $9 for a meat and three sides with cornbread and drink was worth every penny. Sure the vegetables were overcooked but this is a line serving place and to handle the volume they get it would be hard to not overcook the veggies. I got the collared greens, mac n cheese and stewed okra for my sides to go along with a solid pulled pork offering. The pulled pork had a touch of heat on the back of the palate that I enjoyed. The mac n cheese were spot on. A large metal spoon dug into the firm and cheesy mac before placement on my plate. My wife got the lima beans, fried okra and mac. We were happy to have a home cooked meal just like grandma used to serve. The comfort and flavor were present. Next time we are in Beaufort we will eat there again.

BarBQ was not that good to me. I did not care for the sauce. Vegetables were good. The fried pork chops were excellent.

The best road food ever! Meat and three, including drink and cornbread for under $10; but I would have paid $20. Meat selection was excellent- at least 6 choices, even in the middle of the afternoon. The sides were unreal- hearty southern cooking. The adorable woman behind the counter was just the pecan on the pie, she was sweet and generous.

Best home cooked, southern meal in Beaufort!!! Menu changes but always great options, great service with a smile!! They close a 3 but wow they are worth getting dinner early!!

We stayed an extra day in Beaufort just to try this excellent roadside bbq place and are we glad we did! The fried pork chop is huge and delicious, and my hubby tried the ribs, dry rubbed and with sauce the only complaint is he wanted more, maybe it's cause I was picking everything off his plate. We both got the three sides so we could try everything. The butter beans, sweet potatoes and collards and fried okra were great. If you can, try to save room for the homemade peach cobbler! The 2 meals came to less than $20 (without dessert) but with a jumbo side of corn bread and home brewed ice tea or lemonade. Last but not least my husband is a big kid and the wonderful gentleman Sgt. White, owner and cook, started up his military trucks for him! For my DH this was the highlight of our two week trip through SC and GA. Thank you so much !

Without knowing anything about Sgt. White's Barbecue Restaurant , our nose brought us to this fabulous place. We could smell it blocks away. The food was delicious! I got the ribs and my husband got the pulled pork. The meat was falling off the bone and had a great flavor to it and the pulled pork melted in you mouth with incredible spice. It was like nothing we've ever had anywhere. The choice of sides were Southern classics like candied yams, buttered beans, collard greens, fried okra, and everything came with a yummy piece of cornbread. If you are ever near Beaufort, SC, you don't want to miss this experience.

When my family from Hawaii came to visit my sister had 1 request: Good southern BBQ. I intended to give her just that. She loved her meal and hers was amazing she got Mac and cheese gumbo and the pulled pork and each plate came with corn bread. I enjoyed the cornbread it was delicious. I had the collard greens corn and dry pork ribs. Their ribs were ok nice heat to em but I eventually found a hair baked in to mine but hey that happens however it did put me off of my food. Their corn was tough and extremely salty. And their greens left something to be desired. My mother got their greens Mac and cheese and their ribs with a wet sauce and it was delicious. I feel like maybe if they laid off the salt a bit it would be perfect. I would go back based on the variety alone and their cornbread and sweet tea is just a bonus.

I'm being generous with the 3 stars, only because its a locally owned and the lady behind the counter was nice. When on the road there are two types of restaurants we gravitate towards - BBQ places and Wing places. This fit the bbq side of things, and had good reviews so I figured it'd be a good place to try. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I got the wet ribs and the sauce was very odd tasting, it seemed to be the same sauce on the pork which was also very odd tasting- not good, but not awful. The macaroni and cheese was an orangish color, I'm guessing from some sort of powder added to the mix, no way it could have been that orange just using real cheese. The one good thing was the cornbread, so sweet and fluffy it was almost cake.

This place is a long standing staple of the beaufort area. The menu is real "soul food" from real family recipes, and is always on point. Owned and operated by a Marine Veteran. I am solid fan of their fried chops, greens and just Abt every side. You can't get food like this from any chain restaurant!

    (4)
  • Frank L.

Down home southern cooking at it's very best! More food than I could eat. The gumbo and okra were incredible. I don't like collard greens but I loved these! The ribs were huge but somehow I got through them!, barely. I'm not local but if you're from out of town you got to check this place out! It has a real pit barbq!

This a great little Q joint. It may be old and out dated, but hey it's BBQ. I had the Fried pork chop, Pulled pork, Mac n cheese, Collards, and Yams. Everything tasted great. The pork was tender and had a nice smoke to it. The fried pork chop(need I say more) was FRIED and delicious! All sides were the same....Delicious! Definitely one of the better BBQ places out there. If you're in the area, you have to stop and get some of this great food.

Food = 1 (very overcooked and obviously cooked many hours before serving... very poor quality) Price = 3 (8.99 for meat and 3... but, if the food sucks, who cares?) Experience = 2 (paper plates and very cheap plastic utensils... I hope you don't have to actually cut any of your food) I'm a big fan of southern diner fare, with a lifetime of experience... this is NOT GOOD. Try LT's across the bridge on Ladies Island... it's not cheap, but a much better southern meat and 3.

While traveling between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA recently, we ended up on a two state southern barbecue binge. We happened upon Sgt. White's about 15 minutes before closing. The hours are only 11:00AM until 3PM so you have to plan accordingly. I was concerned they might not be too happy to see us so near to closing but we couldn't have gotten a warmer welcome. At that point we were the only two customers in the place and we were treated royally. There is a counter behind which are displayed a series of meat choices and sides. It's a meat and two sides or a meat and three sides with prices that can't be beat. This comes with your choice of tea or lemonade. I chose the unsweetened iced tea which hit the spot nicely on what was a very hot day. For my meal I ordered the pork ribs, mac and cheese, and fried okra, for this trip for sure! (I had to cheat on my paleo diet to try the mac and cheese and it was worth it). My husband had pulled pork, cabbage and mac and cheese. All the food was delicious. The meat fell off the bone on my ribs which were succulent and nicely flavored with a delectable barbecue sauce. The portions were generous and we left filled to the gills. We had an opportunity to chat with Sgt. White before we left. What a wonderful man! He is a former Marine (Parris Island is right near here) and after he got out of the military over 25 year ago, he opened this place. It's nothing fancy; just good home-style southern cooking. It's his ex-wife and best friend he told us who is the server. How's that for kind of sweet? She was very gracious and patient with us while we had trouble deciding on what we wanted amongst all the choices. The place is adorable, nothing fancy but very clean. This will be a place we'll return to for sure.

Not sure why I haven't ever been here in the 25 years I've been coming to the low country. Great pulled pork, yams and mashed potatoes with gravy. The gravy could probably be considered is own meat. Seems they actually cook their meat in the BBQ sauce... to find in SC.

I love good ribs and this place's got it!! We got the 1 meat + 3 sides $8.99 and everything was delicious. I got the dry rub ribs (I dislike BBQ sauce) and the bf got the regular (he loved it). The two ribs were tender, fall off the bone and meaty with a nice dry rub. so flavorful~ I got jambalaya okra, cabbage (nice kick), and collard greens. All three were super delicious, but I'm not a huge fan of the tomato sauce, so the jambalaya okra was only ok. The other two, I can eat a whole plate of itself. oh the corn bread was nice and moist. The bf said after tasting this corn bread, he can't go back to dry corn bread that we have been eating in NYC. We also got sweet tea and lemonade with our meal. Free refills if you dine in. Slight wait but it was fine since we needed time to decide on the sides.

I can not say enough good things about this place. The fact that these two people produce these quantities of this food and deliver it so perfectly is astonishing to me. Every single person working in a customer facing position could take a lesson from the woman manning the counter. Tips: -It's barbecue - it's not a Diner. -You can get unsauced (smoke only) ribs - just ask. -Get the fried pork chop and then have her dip it in the pork chop / meatloaf gravy. -Sorry vegetarians almost everything has meat in it. Open M - F 11AM - 3PM only.

After reading Yelp's reviews we felt we had to visit this landmark place while we were in Beaufort. It looks small from the outside because it is! But the food was worth squeezing into this shack so don't miss it. Service: Kind service with a warm heart and trusting disposition. The server was more concerned about getting folks fed than making sure the check was filled out and accounted for...trusting. Loved that!!! True customer service, 5 Stars! BBQ: The smell and look was overwhelming making us to over-order / over-eat. Tried the ribs right off the grill without extra sauce, simply OUTSTANDING! I thought those were the best of all the meats. Also had the chicken, dang close second. In fact we tried everything and except for the catfish being full of bones and a little on the small side everything was equally outstanding. Sides: The collared greens were my favorite but I think everyone else felt the Mac and Cheese may have edged it out. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was the fried okra...it was cold but still good. The sweet cornbread did make up for it. Cleanliness: Good but could be better. I think the lack of space large crowds and limited staff was a big factor in trying to keep it as clean as Sgt White or any Marine would have it. Still it wasn't bad. Overall: 4.5 stars but since it's small location did make it a real seating a challenge for all of us. It also slowed the service. Couple that with the small boney catfish I'm going to have to round down to 4 Stars. however, if we were going to be eating out it would've been 5 Stars!!'

Yelp reviewers were Spot On. We were traveling thru Beaufort heading to Savannah and checked Yelp for a good meat & 3 and found this delightful place. As reported, the pulled pork was delicious and the sweet potatoes were to die for! Green beans and cornbread were good also and you can't beat the price. Three veggie plate with cornbread and tea was $6.99 and the servings were very generous. Very satisfying lunch and very fast. And ditto the other comments about the counter service - delightful!!

  • Nicole K.

A must! I wasn't sure about it at first, it is soul food for sure! I get a meat and two sides to go and it is easily 2 meals.

This is a local establishment, with a connection to the Marines Corps (Parris Island is nearby). The pulled pork wasn't bad, but wasn't special either. This was a local joint, heavily patronized by locals, and very homey and personal. It sits in a small shack on the edge of a parking lot for a strip mall. It was busy - we had to wait in line for a few minutes before being served. The reason for a poor review is the food: everything had too much salt and way to much sugar (or molasses or other sweetener). The corn had huge kernels and was cooked with onions - though it looked good, it was tough and way too salty. Added sugar didn't help either. The cornbread was traditional but dry. The sweet-potatoes were dripping in brown-sugar glaze. The collard greens were sickly sweet. The unsweetened tea was bitter. The pulled pork was the best part of the food experience, but the barbecue sauce was merely OK. Are you getting a theme? I really wanted to like this place, but in the end I couldn't. The food was heavy and too sweet, too salty. Hours later it was still feeling heavy. It's a great little neighborhood joint with food that isn't good enough for another visit. BTW, it's in Beaufort (though it came up in a search for Tybee Island).

While visit SC for the first time we were driving through Beaufort and happened upon this place. Let me just say I have never had BBQ food this good! we tried everything... the dry ribs were perfectly done tender, juicy and tasted amazing, they had just the right amount of seasoning with just a touch of smoke... nothing was over done! The wet ribs were so good, the sauce was not over powering with just the right amount of spice... The baked chicken was just so damn good moist, tender, with just the right amount of seasoning to make the chicken taste better! GET the pecan pie!!! best pecan pie I have ever had! we only got two pieces what a mistake (we should have ordered more)! The sweet potato pie was really good (we have never had it before, but would get it again from here). The service was great local friendly and Sgt White was great to talk to, he stop what he was doing to chat with us. If we are ever back in SC we would be making a stop here! Semper Fi!

I know why this place gets rave reviews! Nothing fancy, but those ribs may be the best I've ever eaten! Cabbage side was crazy good! Will have to review the homemade pecan pie another time. This meal was huge! Located between a pawn shop and the Piggly wiggly - make sure you don't miss it!

Well Done Sgt.White!!. My Mama can't cook porkchops like I had today. They were big and had a awsome flavor. The fried okra, Mac and cheese, and okra gumbo was crazy good. The corn bread was like cake. The sweet tea was just right. Will be back next time we visit Beaufort. I can't believe we almost eat at the piggly wiggly. The smoke from the pit lured us up there.

  • Jonathan V.

Wow, this place is really good. The BBQ pork had a very good taste. I was looking for some BBQ sauce when we got there, but after I tasted the pork, I realized it didn't need any. I also got 2 sides that I normally wouldn't get, but they were great. Lima beans and cabbage. The lady at the counter recommended my entire meal, and she got it right! There's no doubt, if I am ever in Beaufort again, this would be a "must stop"!

What can I say. It doesn't get more authentic than this. A real downhome dive BBQ joint. Multi wood (including Cherry) cooking pit. Awesome selection. Loved it.

I'm from Kansas City and was stationed MCAS for a few years. As many of you may know but Kansas City is a BBQ Capital. Sgt. White's is a good however the meat does sit in the warmer for sometime. The cornbread is AMAZING!!! If I visit Beaufort again I would go back and try it again.

  • Vicky G.

What a pleasant surprise! The restaurant is absolutely spotless inside. I don't think I have ever been in a restaurant so clean before. My first love is NC BBQ, but this barbecue was super delicious. The mac and cheese is addictive! I would eat there more often if the hours were longer.

  • Michael M.

If you are looking for home cooked food like your grandma cooked, this is the place to go. The portions are LARGE. The food is amazing and bursts with flavor! It was a little loud, but other than that it is everything you would expect. I will return....

Uhhahh! Drop and give me 20! 20 of those meaty pork ribs. Really excellent barbecue with a great selection of meats and sides all very inexpensive. If you're headed to Hilton Head or Charleston it's worth the trip to Beaufort.

I am not,a,big fan. Too much food sitting in warming trays and getting overdone. The BBQ meat is nothing outstanding. Overrated. Not much bbq alternative in the immediate area though.

If you, by chance, ever find yourself in Beaufort SC and hungry, Sgt White's is worth a stop. It is, by definition, what all those newfangled trendy BBQ shacks are trying to be but fail so miserably. Sgt. White's has straight up character. Sgt. White himself has been back in the kitchen nearly 25 years, serving up BBQ, chicken, meatloaf, pork chops, and other Southern vittles. He runs the kitchen while he's got a woman up front ringing folks up and serving the food. It's a typical meat-and-two place, and they've got loads of options for sides: mac and cheese, fried okra, collards, coleslaw, yams, fried corn, the list goes on. And it all looked sloppy and delicious. The BBQ is definitely among the best I've had, although I'm no expert. I'm a BBQ lover, so I love pretty much all of it. They have both vinegar and tomato sauces for you to choose from depending on what you fancy. The entire restaurant is a shack that lies in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot, and the interior is decked out with military posters and autographed photos. There are a few tables for eat-in but they'll also be happy to package up anything you need to go in large styrofoam cups. Don't worry if you've got a wait while your food is being prepared: just enjoy watching the regulars come in and out and get refill upon refill of sweet tea. This is how the South works, and why I love it so.

  • Chris K.

This is one of the best restaurants in Beaufort. The dinning area is small maybe about 6 booths, but their food is worth the wait in gold. Home made BBQ is what this place is known for, and it should be! Everything is great the pulled pork is top notch and probably a step above Q on Bay. The service is wonderful its like walking in to your mothers house and having her give you all the food you can imagine. You have to try this place!

    (5)
  • Victor C.

Pure awesomeness! The pulled pork is my absolute favorite, with sides of Mac and Cheese and Collard Greens or fried Okra. Sgt Whites is a family favorite and a must have for all visitors passing through Beaufort. Sgt Whites serves to round out any effort at great southern hospitality and the Beaufort experience.

If you ever find yourself in Beaufort, SC, and are fond of Southern BBQ, then Sgt. White's restaurant is a must-visit. We're talking the real deal pit pork barbecue, ribs, chicken and all the fixins including collards, mac 'n cheese, New Brunswick stew, mashed potatoes and gravy, richly stewed cabbage, and more. Portions are generous and everything appears to be hand-prepared. Wish we'd had room for dessert because the house-baked pies looked pretty good. Sgt. White's has been featured in several magazines and in Jane and Michael Stern's book, Roadfood. He's got a great story and you can read about it and his time in the military along with letters from customers and the magazine articles on the wall of fame inside the restaurant.

So great, totally authentic and a complete hole in the wall kind of place. If you are ever in the area, make a point to stop here. I had read about it and tried to time a drive south so that we would pass through at lunchtime. My husband was getting hungry, but I told him to hold off on the mcdonalds as it was really going to be worth it. I think he was a little hesitant when we got there and it does seem to be one of those places that you feel like an outsider and aren't really sure how to order, but the woman who was dishing out the food was so nice. I guess it helped that there was no line at the time. So I ordered the pulled pork (good, but not the star) with mac and cheese and corn. Mac and cheese was average, but the corn was soooo good. My husband got the chicken (not fried, it's more of a BBQ/baked chicken) and that was incredible. The portion is totally reasonable, but after me nibbling on my husband's chicken, he actually went back to get another piece! Such a great stop for authentic food and the woman serving was really so nice. Hope I'm in this area again and if so, I'll definitely stop in. We had heard that they have weird hours and to call before going there, but we had no problems.

I love this place! There's only one cashier and she's the server too. Awesome lady, it's like going to your grandmas house to eat. Had the fried pork chops and it was delicious. The sweet tea to me was the signature item. Definitely going back. The decor was all Marine related of course =)

Honestly, I don't know where to even start. Num, Num, Num...........wow! This place is simply AMAZING! I was greeted upon entering. The lady behind the buffet was fixin up plates and running the register and doing it all with a HUGE genuwine smile. The smell was like "Omg I have walked in to grandma's house!" Well except it is Sgt White's house! I opted for the fried pork chop plate..........seasoned and cooked to perfection! I had veggie gumbo and corn and it came with cornbread. No clue what they season the veggies with but they are OUT OF THIS WORLD yummy! I also took a cup of butter beans to go. The gentleman ahead of me ordered a pork chop sandwich. I watched as Sgt White (I am guessing) from the kitchen handed the lady behind the counter a steaming bun and she slapped TWO huge pork chops on it and wrapped it in foil. The guy smiles and says "I eat here every week". I must go back and try the ribs and pulled pork. It looked and smelled amazing. There were probably at least a dozen veggies to chose from and none of them looked disappointing. You get a meat, 2 veggies, a cornbread, and tea or lemonade for 7.99. They fill your plate. I made 2 meals with mine. This is DEFINITELY on my keeper list. Do yourself a favor and try this place out. They will not disappoint you. Apparently they have been around for about 23 years. It definitely shows in their food!. If you want some down home southern cooking like grandma makes then this is the place for you!

  • Jordan B.

I will add my positive review to the ones already on Yelp. This is the best example of the statement that no matter how humble a place, the qualitynwill show through. We saw the reviews on Yelp and decided to try it. We almost missed the place driving by but when we walked in we were greeted by a most enthusiastic lady who described the food in the steam table in front of us with such enthusiasm! You get one main and two sides with cornbread and a drink for a very very reasonable price. The meatloaf was the best I've ever had and the mashed potatoes and corn with onions and bacon were great. If you want great food at a very reasonable price, this "little find" is the place for you.

  • Dean H.

This restaurant is the greatest. It's a little hole in the wall that's only open M - F from 11am to 3pm, but if you live in the area make sure you try it. They serve down home southern type dishes like pork chops, ribs, yams, green beans, and other items. The cost of a meal is $7.98, which includes one meat and two sides. I had the pork ribs with cabbage and rice with a little gravy. This is the best restaurant meal that I've ever had. There were many people in our group so several people tried different meats and sides so I had the opportunity to try a bit of theirs and it was just as delicious tasting as what I had chosen. The drinks come with free refills you just need to wait a minute for them to come into the dining room and fill you up. We got there when they opened and about 15 minutes after the place was packed out the door. This restaurant is definitely a known secret in the area.
