I haven't been to this restaurant in over 13 years because they don't have one in the Sarasota area where I live. I was so excited to eat there. I had the classic burrito with extra chili con carne sauce. It was just how I remembered it. Awesome!! The waitress was great also. I liked how the salsa tasted. It had a little bite to it too! I also mixed it into the Spanish rice.

Pricey for what you get. Can't agree more with a reviewer below who said taco bell is better for less money. All of the dishes basically have some beans and rice with small portion of meat that you order. Ends up that everything tastes similar. The fajita includes only 3 little tortilla. And we were seated right next to the to-go pick up station and the phone was ringing really loud the entire time I was there and no one barely picked up. Lower the volume or have someone to answer the phone right away. So annoying. The only part that I like about dining in here was the free chips and tasty salsa. The rest of the meal tastes fine but beware, the pictures on the menu looks nothing like the actual food you get.

Yes, I gave this place 3 stars. Here's why: If you know what you're getting - Americanized Mexican food a la Chili's - it's not bad. Of course if you were comparing it to authentic Mexican food it would be sorely lacking but I don't think anyone goes to OTB expecting authenticity. Then again my mom won't eat at Chili's because she "doesn't like Mexican" so maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, our family had lunch here recently and it was fine. We ordered guacamole to go along with our chips and it was better than I expected. My boys ordered the nachos off the kids menu and it was a really good value. It was a large serving of the chips they serve at the table smothered with cheese. They added chicken at my son's request. I'd recently been to a chain restaurant and my son ordered "nachos" which were a bag of Doritos with toppings. Needless to say I thought the OTB nachos were a great alternative. My husband had a bowl that was obviously inspired from some other joints but he liked it. I had the chicken enchiladas. They tasted ok but there was way too much sauce. The rice and beans were fine, nothing special. The service was attentive so no complaints there. All in all it was a slightly better than average experience with a "Mexican" chain restaurant.

Only gave it one star cause I had too. Just go to taco bell for 1/4 the price. The only good thing about this place was the service

I rarely write reviews but my meal here tonight was a disaster. Ordered two hard tacos and a marg. marg was great. The tacos that came were soft shell and I sent them back. Plopped into a new hard shell, my tacos came back but the carnita was so dry I couldn't chew the meat so I sent that back and ate the first one. Thirty minutes later the waiter claimed the kitchen told him I already received my other taco and insisted he bring me my replacement "to go" as I paid my bill. The taco came back for a fourth time as soft shell rather than hard. I left . $27 bucks for a marg, one taco and a lot frustration is just disappointing.

I decided that I needed something a bit different after being in the hotel for so long and this place was close by. I noticed that they had happy hour food and drinks at the bar so decided to sit at the bar and order mini tacos/flautas for $3 each (you get 3 tacos & 4 flautas) and a Dos XX for $3 too. They also provide plenty of free chips and salsa which make it even better. It's not the traditional Mexican that I would have enjoyed getting, but it definitely hit the spot and that's all that mattered at that time. The place was nice and clean, the bartender was right there when I walked in, even though the bar area was busy and she explained the happy hour specials to me. I would definitely come back here again, as it is Mexican food (one of my favs) and the price is right for happy hour (can't go wrong w/$3 beer and $3 happy apps).

I actually like this place. I mean it's not totally Mexican more Americanized then traditional I feel but food is always good when I come. Something's aren't made fresh you can tell but for me it's all about their chips and spicy salsa that's on point. Not to think or watery just right with warm tortilla chips. The burritos are packed your choice of refried beans or black beans on side, actually most of their dishes come with that choice. I like their cheese sauce but not there red type marina sauce. The sampler is good can definitely be split between 3 people for a few bites. I do have a soft spot when places have a decent kids menu for for 2.5yr old. Makes momma a happy camper when he can pick something yummy too. Also a plus a stellar bar and liquor menu. Try the corona-Rita. Literally a corona poured slowly into a margarita. Booths are spacious and table chairs aren't bad either. Waitresses are hit or miss and sometimes have you waiting around for your check but other then that seem attentive. There is an outdoor patio for summer/spring seating but be wary it faces a parking lot and highway so not a pretty view but fresh air at least.

I'm not a huge chain restaurant fan and this place brings home the point why. Overpriced Americanized Mexican food which is sub par. It's not the cleanest of establishments. Would it kill you to at least wipe down the menus . It's almost as if the clean these things with the left over food on people's plates, they where absolutely disgusting . I used a napkin to turn the pages . The bar staff wasn't exactly on point either . They were not fast friendly or efficient . I probably won't return .

I had lunch here, and the restaurant wasn't busy. The food was good, but the service needs improvement. I was seated and wasn't given any utensils. I had to ask for it after my food arrived. It took a while for someone to give me the check and to pick up the check (maybe they didn't want my money that badly). My carne asada was good. The salsa and chips were delicious...the chips were big and the salsa had a nice spicy kick to it.

You cant beat the coctails here. Love the perfect margarita with a extra shot..today im trying there nachos..loaded with everything..usually i get there burrito and boy does it rock mexican..you can get anything anyway you like here..like im not a fan of onions..can get everything with out! Highly recommend here to everyone.bar has tvs everywhere..and dining room is perfect.

Below average Americanized Mexican food. I had heard good things about this place so I went to check it out, even though I'm not a huge fan of chain restaurants. The margaritas were pretty good, even the standard house margaritas. Light, refreshing and strong. Their table salsa with chips are also very good. It's a nice chunky salsa with a lot of flavor and just a little kick. However, the rest of the experience was not so great. We ordered the 3-alarm cheese dip and it was barely spicy. The cheese had a nice blend and flavor, but the group I was with are huge into really spicy food so we were left disappointed. I ordered the enchiladas suizas, and when it arrived, wished I had gotten the carne asada like everyone else. The enchiladas were totally bland, as was the accommodating rice. I'd recently had a frozen microwave meal of this same dish and it was better than what they served me. I ate a few bites and I was all set. It was barely palatable. The beans were fine, but you can't really mess up beans. Those steaks were very good but the accompanying melted garlic butter tasted off and overly salty; everybody set theirs aside. I might be back, but definitely not for enchiladas.

This specific on the border was a little abnormal - the service seems to be really struggling, but the food was decent so it pulled me back to 3 stars. The waitress was horrible to our table but nice to the table next to ours - we didn't have complicated orders or anything but she kept rolling her eyes.. Not only that, we had to wait for 20 minutes for her to come back with menus, waited 30 minutes for our guacamole... The guacamole live was delicious. Needed some more salt, lime, maybe some Olive oil though. The frozen marg was great! I ordered the tres chicken enchiladas which were very cheesy but that's why I ordered it tonight :p So all in all, food was decent when it came. Service really needs some work. We were trying to be over the top nice to our waitress to see if she would even pick up her mood for us.. Nothing. And id like to think we're Pretty likable people!

This is the second or third time I've been to the restaurant and it will honestly wind up being the last time. We were seated really quickly and pleasantly by our server. She was very nice and took our orders. She was really flexible with the changes we wanted made to our food and was attentive enough to bring us our refills, extra chips, check in on us, etc. It got pretty busy pretty quickly after we ordered so it took a little bit of time for our food to show up which is understandable. The queso we had was pretty flavorful for chain restaurant-type queso and the chips appeared to be pretty recently fried. I got a burrito and it was very good. Plenty of flavor, large quantity and exactly as I had asked for it. Unfortunately, my girlfriend's fajitas were probably 7-8 pieces of meat total, three slices of bell pepper and just a couple of onions. It seemed like a really disproportionate price (roughly $15.00) for the amount of meat she received. We asked our waitress who pulled a manager over from nearby and she confirmed it was the appropriate amount of meat and vegetables and offered to grab some more. We declined as my girlfriend felt she would be filled with the portion she was given, but only due to purchasing the queso. I've previously gotten the fajitas and the quantity was not consistent. In fact, we were seated next to a large party of children and a couple of parents and several of them got fajitas as their meal and they were considerably larger portions of meat, including the children. It was very frustrating. I might be back for some drinks or something or if I"m really feeling some generic Mexican food (albeit with actually pretty good flavor), but not for fajitas. It seems very disingenuous.

This was SO much better than I expected. We had a few gift cards to Chilis, which can also be used here. We decided to give On the Border a try. It was fairly busy for lunch on Presidents Day and we opted to sit in the bar area, which was a bit quieter. I really liked the decor and the bar area was fairly clean. Kayla was our waitress and she was great. Super attentive and also gave me meal and drink suggestions when I asked. The complimentary warm chips and salsa were great. We ordered the "guacamole live", which a normal place would call tableside guacamole, without the trademark. It was delicious. I had two different margaritas and also enjoyed them. For my meal I ordered the chicken fajita salad. It was larger than I expected. I was brought a salad with a sizzling platter of fajita chicken. I've had fajita salads at plenty of places and have never received a sizzling platter on the side before. I was impressed. My husbands had the fish tacos, which he thought were OK, but he wasn't raving over them. Obviously this is "Americanized" Mexican food. For what it is though, it's not bad. Overall, I would return.

I have eaten her 2x the most recent time I came for happy hour . I am very impressed with their happy hour food menu . The food is actually items you can get full off of. They have a drink happy hour also . I had a margarita I was disappointed with how much syrup vs alcohol was in the drink so I just ordered drinks from the regular menu. I will be back again :-)

There is no excuse for gross orange juice. If you can't serve something so simple, don't have it on the menu.

Service was very slow. We ate on the patio and were ignored for long stretches of time. The food was wrong in three ways and the server was clueless. Nice enough but completely out of it. The food itself was very run of the mill. Boring. The grilled fish taco was the only really tasty part and I had to add guacamole to make it work. Substandard even for a chain.

Let this be a warning, weary traveler. You're probably on Yelp wondering if you should eat here. Don't do it. Spare yourself the pain that I went through. I have eaten at many a decent chain "Mexican" restaurants. This one doesn't even claim to be Mexican but "Texas style". This is not a good anything-style restaurant. From the dry white rice, the old black beans, the overly spicy salad, the raw onions on a fajita (who does that?), to the too-sweet iced tea, there was not a single redeemable thing about this place. Wait- I'm wrong. Our waitress was nice.

On the border is one of my favorite places to eat! The staff is fantastic! I try a new meal every time I go. Never had a bad meal! I go at least once a month. If you are looking for great Mexican food and a great night out, I would highly recommend!

I am giving this On the Border a 5 star review because of the stellar service and yummy food after a looooong food less day at Comic Con. Carla our waitress was amazing, kind, thoughtful and generous. We all ordered ice teas and we couldn't make up our mind, (they have three flavors) so she brought us a pitcher of regular ice tea and then the three syrups so we could try all of them. She kept refilling our chips and salsa (always a plus) and periodically checking our table. Conversing with us and asking us questions. Our food was delicious, I had the Enchiladas Suizas, YUM I cant remember what my hubby and friend got. But it was good. Then I got the sizzling Apple Crisp or whatever it was called, too tired that night, she came out and wish a flourish drizzled caramel sauce over it and whirled it to the table. BEAUTIFUL. Again she was delightful and she deserves tons of credit!! Thank you Carla and On the Border for such a great experience.

I am not a fan of this place. Best word to describe this restaurant is BORING! Atmosphere: the best part of my experience. Gorgeous restaurant and the décor appeared to be authentic. Food: not authentic enough for me! average, boring and not that favorable. Service: slow. I decided to order a sampler platter and the server's eyes bugged out! Yes, I did order a big dish so, I can try a little bit of what they offered. not too happy with her. Hint: pass on this place.

When it comes to authentic Mex, in a sit down restaurant, this is the place to go. They have a fantastic house salsa so good I have taken it home to use on my own cooking. Warm chips and salsa with a cerveza to start while waiting at your outdoor table on an warm summer evening for your Ropa Vieja... what could be better?

I was here last week with my hubby and I must say, I have no idea whats going on in the kitchen, but I LOVE it! I am a regular customer and have become rather used to the place with high expectations, of course. Not that I ever leave disappointed but last week's visit was something special. It was probably the best meal I have had there! The staff were so much more "on the ball" than usual and our waitress Jessica did a superb job. As for the food... Just WOW! Keep it up, guys!

I haven't tried the food, but I gotta say the margaritas (I got frozen watermelon) and the chips and salsa make this a worthy place to stop by for a drink after work. Waitress was great and didn't mind that we were taking up a bar table working on a project on the computer for a good hour!

Just a tad bit pricey. But very good. Great free chip and salsa. Service was friendly but not super-fast. Id go back again.

We went here 9/22/14 for dinner. Margarita was tasty, but two of us sent back our meals. Really bad. Tasted like frozen mexican weight watchers meals. Actually, not even that good. Service was GREAT, very attentive and nice. Chips were super salty, too. We will never go back.

As a vegan I definetly wouldn't say Mexican food is super vegan friendly but On the Border is awesome because their VEGGIE FAJITAS. They are out of this world. Just order no cheese, no sour cream, cilantro rice, and black beans. The grilled veggies are cooked to perfection and it is so fun to make little wraps at the table. There guacamole is very good and it doesn't hurt that they give you endless free chips and salsa. I am always satisfied after eating here!!

Walked into this place... Was immediately greeted with an attitude by the hostess. She stated kitchen was closing soon and to have a seat at the lounge. I waited in the lounge for awhile. I sat in the lounge long enough to call up another restaurant and ask them what time their kitchen closed. I decided to finally get up and walk out.

Hate me all you want. My last dine in here was my final. I have been to this restaurant several times and it has mostly been an enjoyable experience each time but the last time I went there I ended up being severely disappointed more so than anything else. The food was great but everything leading up to that point was very testy. For one, we waited to be seated in the almost empty restaurant for ten minutes which wasn't a big deal at first, who cares right? We were seated and ordered our drinks. Not more than another 10 minutes go by until we even caught sight of our waiter, meh whatever. After we got our drinks we didn't see our waiter until I was almost finished with my coke, leisurely sipping it and coloring with my toddler. Finally, we see our waiter and order our food. At this point in time others are complaining about not being seated as there was never a hostess present at the front, just as a side note. The food came out in a normal orderly fashion so that wasn't an issue and it was good too. We didn't see our waiter again for thirty minutes. We ate all our food by the time he came back, never even checked in on us even though we needed refills and a 'To-Go' container. After realizing he has been neglectful he proceeded to address our table needs and even saw I was ready for the check. He then grabbed the box and then told me he would be back to get the check. I then watched him help other people and service other responsibilities only to come back to me without a check. He realized he didn't get it when I was holding out my credit card ready to be swiped then told me he was about to grab it. He then started cleaning up after some other people and went back into the kitchen. I was courteous the whole time and never gave him any grief so it wasn't me or my attitude by any means. He finally caught on eventually but, suffice to say, this was enough reason for me not to go back. I don't think I would really miss the food as much as I miss good service.

Moderately good food. Eaten a couple of times inside but mostly take out. The to-go people have been great always right order very friendly. Wouldn't go out of my way to go here like some other places but it works!

Pleasantly surprised. Service was excellent and very efficient. Chips and salsa was great. I ordered the pick 4 items. I picked the cheese and onion enchilada, chicken tostada, chicken flaunta, and a crispy beef taco. I was not able to finish my whole meal, very generous portions. Dan got the fish taco and tortilla soup. For dessert I ordered the sopapillas which are Mexican pastry most similar to doughboys with either honey or chocolate sauce.. I of course picked chocolate and I was so pleased. We really enjoyed our food. For a chain Mexican place I was very satisfied. I would pick here over chilis anytime from now on. Next time I want to try the chicken fajitas.

The service is not consistent and neither is the food. When it's good it's great when it's bad it's the worst. The margaritas are excellent which is why if gets 3 stars.

Every time I go to On The Border, I thoroughly enjoy my visit. The chips and salsa they bring out are so yummy and fresh... I wish they had other options for salsa though, I don't like how hot theirs is. The bar is beautiful and the decor is really cool. Even with a chock full dining room, the noise level is decently low. Last time we went, our food took unusually long to come out. My husband and myself didn't even mention to the waitress or complain that we were waiting long and she offered us a free desert to redeem then or on our next visit. That showed that the waitress and management were well aware that they were backed up and didn't just allow people to get angry. They were on top of their diners trying to keep them happy. Food is fantastic and their drinks are fun and strong!!! I highly recommend anyone to go here...

not happy !!!!!!! :-( why ????!!!! i'll tell you why, one loud arrogant waitress!!! no self control named arlene that i could hear three tables away yelling at somebody through some little microphones they use, then some skinny little guy came over ,i think he was the manager but not sure, she was yelling that she needed a credit for a table of people , she called creeps , who talks like this in public???!!! who ever the guy was, she telling him shes not taking any crap from some guy called tom,and that she'll call tom her self and tell him to shove it and that she doesn't need this job !! that she has a day job that pays better, in addition, her customers she was serving didn't look happy either, she kept sitting at the tables with them like she was a customer too and wouldn't stop talking to them, they had looks on their faces and rolling their eye balls in their heads wounding when will she stop talking and leave us alone looks, it was complete circus

I have so many guilty pleasures, and this is one of them. Mmmm their beef enchiladas and chimichangas are soooooooo good. melted cheese, sour cream, guacamole.... Their margaritas... last night I had a mango flavor which was basically just a sweeter margarita with sugar on the rim (no real mango flavor, which is probably a good thing - and delicious!). Its a great place to go with a group of friends, get pitchers of margaritas and enjoy each others company in a bright sort of environment with solid tex mex food and a great price. It's unbelievably consistent in that way. The downsides... the staff/service is not so reliable - sometimes awesome, sometimes just weird; I'm not a big fan of the chips and salsa but I know other people are; the rice side is really flavorless; and it is a bit off-putting when the whole plate of food is monotonously colored (but on the other hand, it tastes so good!). I shouldn't like this place as much as I do, but every time I go it's always a fun night.

Best as I can tell, got food poisoning here - it was only place I ate all day. After about 25 minutes we were told they messed up the salad. They put the chicken on it instead of on the side. 5-10 minutes later we got our meals (a half-hour from placing the order on a non-busy afternoon). I'm guessing the new piece was rushed and not handled properly. So, meal took 30 minutes, drink refill took 15. Staff seemed pre-occupied with hanging around the computer terminal. Unpleasant experience all around. I've told my wife if I ever suggest returning to here she is welcome to hit me will a large, blunt object.

This was a horrible meal. Ordered the Ultimate Fajitas. Beef tasted rancid, shrimp was overly salty, the normal fajita accompaniments were forgotten, overall seasoning was gross, veggies were mushy, rice was undercooked. This is the first time I've had a bad experience with this chain. Diner beware of this locale.

I'm only giving 2 stars because the food was good. Service was awful. The bartender tried giving my bf regular stoli when he asked for stoli O. If you don't have it say so, don't just make a different drink anyways. And i order a tall beer , it came in a goblet!! Really??? To top it of the bartender had a bad attitude, it was like she was doing us a favor and she didn't want to be here. Then go home!!!!!! If i wanted an attitude, i could have stayed home and saved money lol

Only ONE dish makes me add the extra star to say it's A-ok. Mexican street tacos. Great small corn tortillas filled with chopped up marinated steak, diced onion and cilantro. Avacado served on the side. Great dish and the only reason I go back when I crave them. Otherwise, fast and friendly, margartitas weak and too tart (too much sour mix), chips greasy and they give you 10 at a time, salsa tastes like canned tomato sauce and is very bland. Rice average, refreid beans average. I have tried a few other things- all the same chain mexican restaurant stuff you can get anywhere. RI is not known for it's mexican food (at least as far as the ones I have tried). Coming from Miami, I have not been impressed. But again, the street tacos are worth the trip.

Ice cold beer and warm chips and salsa! What is not to like? This place is hopping and for good reason. The atmosphere is high energy. Lots of big screen tvs in the bar area with various sporting events broadcast. The dining room is very Mexican looking with ceramic floors, walls and tables. I had a couple of tacos and a couple of beers and the bill was surprisingly low. I left full and happy!

Worst margarita! Worst service and the food wasn't anything to talk about. I don't think I've had a worse waiter in my life. Because we weren't ready to order food with the first time he came to us he made us wait 30 minutes to order. Then he insulted me when I asked if there was sour mix in the skinny margarita by saying "all margaritas have sour mix, if it doesn't then it's not a margarita it's a mixed drink." Um? This is the only place I've ever been to that says that. So when I got the drink it was ALL sour mix!! Disgusting. Will never ever be going back!!!

I've gone to this on the border before and I came back for the food. The food is consistently good and with Mexican restaurants it can always be a hit or miss. Not the best Mexican I have had but better than Chillis. However that being said I would not dine at this restaurant again. My friend and I dined with a 2 year old and specifically asked to be sat in the corner away from everyone as 2 year olds aren't always quiet and can be disruptive. During the course of our meal she was a typical 2 year old antsy, let out a few screams and even cried at one point when we said no. The waitress clearly was trying to rush us out because of the baby. Another table must have complained because she asked to take our plates away 3 times while we were still eating. By the way we were only there 45 minutes and had drinks and an appetizer before our main courses so as you can tell we weren't just sitting around. As soon as we said we were done she ran over with the check and didn't ask for desert. I realize that nobody wants to sit next to a kid that isn't sitting in silence but this restaurant isn't fine dining and is a family restaurant. If tables around us had problems they should have sat at the bar or been moved. I have been with children at restaurants acting more disruptive then the child I was with and have been at restaurants were other tables had children that were 10 times more disruptive than my party was today.

Yummy!!! Met some friends there for dinner on a busy Friday night. Everyone, from the hostess to the busboy (?) was friendly and helpful! My friends had arrived first, and the hostess offered to let me look around to see if I could find them, and laughed as I waited for my friend to text me their location in the restaurant. :-) As soon as I sat down, the waitress was there to see what I wanted to eat/drink. They kept us filled with chips and queso (delish). The food was good all around (I loved my baked fish tacos), and the beverages were tasty. Even for a busy, busy night, we were well attended to. I'll definitely be back for more!

ya just gotta love this place - great food, great decor, comfortable setting. BBQ Brisket soft tacos.... and I thought I knew everything there was to know about BBQ but I've never had tacos. Very tasty, nicely paired with onion straws.

Solidly OK. Some things are actually quite good - the margaritas (straight up, please!) are some of the best I've had - really! The queso is respectable, mix in some salsa and you've got something very tasty. The sangria, unfortunately, was so bad I had to do something I rarely do and ask to have it taken off the bill. The manager happened to come by at that time and he was very understanding and admitted they had a lot of complaints with it. Fajitas were meh- I don't think I'd order those again...rather tasteless actually. Hubby had a combo platter and was very pleased. Overall, it's a place we go to occasionally for good margaritas, and pretty good food. (Ok, I admit, I really do like that dang queso!)

Chips and salsa are spectacular. The salsa has a nice kick to it. I'm not into spicy/hot flavors and I would say this is my max. Margaritas are a must, not watered down and pack a decent punch. I love the frozen margarita/sangria swirl, personally. Meals are pretty decent, prices are fair and I have always left happy and full. Recently they had an all you could eat enchilada deal for $9.99... how can you beat that?!

Went here on Saturday night. The food was very good but we had terrible service. First thing is our waiter sits down at our table and gives us a lecture about using our drink coasters before we even order our drinks. Seriously? Don't talk to us like were little kids. My wife ordered the quesadilla and they brought the wrong kind. The waiter said they made the wrong kind and would have one reordered and take it off the bill. They brought her a new one but it was never removed from the bill. The waiter was never around and we had to flag him down to get a drinks refilled. We have been here before and had great service so it just depends who you get. One more thing is the salsa they give you with the chips is hot. They should have mild available for those of us who dont like it that spicy.

I've tried in earnest over the last couple years to give these folks the benefit of the doubt from service to the food itself. Eating in isn't so bad but take out is another story. First off the phone rings about a dozen times before anyone answers. Then, you are placed on perpetual hold to give the order to an obvious subordinate. When you arrive you need to go find someone even though the buzzer rings to alert them a take out patron is there at the counter. FAIL!! Ordered Ultimate Fajita's and a side of Guac. I was given a cold styro container with a generous portion of rice w/ corn but tiny, minuscule in-fact portions of re-fried beans and veggies. A side of lettuce, tomato and sour cream was barely enough for one fajita nevermind the five flats they gave me. WORST was the two 1"X1/2" slivers of STEAK given to me with a hearty portion of pulled pork and three small slivers of chicken. I paid for an extra side of Guac which consisted of a tablespoon size portion I could land on one tortilla chip. Bout done with On The Border.... Unless I'm just drinking beer that is

I shouldn't like this place as much as I do, but I can't help it. I present to you, my fellow Yelpers, my case: Exhibit A: Consistency No matter when you go your orders will come out the same way. Food is hot, relatively flavorful and they never sacrifice portions. Exhibit B: Chips and salsa For the money I don't believe there to be a better chips and salsa offering around. Exhibit C: Perfect Patron Margaritas Enough said.

I love going to On the Border...the food is always great (cue the queso!!) and I always leave feeling crazy full. Pros: generous portions, decent prices, enthusiastic staff Cons: disgusting house margaritas, and the bar glasses are never super clean. (Went there tonight and sat in the dining room behind the bar, I could see lipstick and soap still on the glasses that were hanging. Gross! Would rather skip the booze)

This is my favorite restaurant! The chips are spectacular and the salsa is delicious. I usually get the chicken fajita quesadillas or the three sauce chicken fajita burrito-both are outstanding! Love their black beans as well!

Never had a bad experience here! I always get the chicken chimichanga, no beans extra rice and my girlfriend get he pork and shrimp fajitas and they are delicous! Staff is always there when I need them and able to satisfy any request I make. I got back several times a month.

Went here for a quick bite with a friend around 8 pm and had a 30 minute wait. I wasn't expecting much for authentic Mexican food as it is a chain restaurant so they did meet my expectations on the steak fajitas I ordered. However, the service was terrible. We were given waters, chips, and salsa and our food arrived before the margarita. When I mentioned this to the server who brought our food (not the waitress we ordered with) he told me "your lucky, the bar is behind tonight". My drink finally arrived when I was done with my dinner. The waitress apologized and offered free dessert. We ordered our free dessert but it was nothing to rave about and couldn't even finish it.

I used to really like this restaurant... The service was fantastic but the food not to much... I got the enchilada plate that tasted disgusting and raw.. My rice and beans were ice cold .. Not impressed !! It was very busy because it was on a weekend shouldn't be an excuse for the food to be just sitting there as the kitchen gets backed up.. I really liked this place before today but o probably won't ever go back.. It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth

This place is great! I usually get the Cane asada cooked medium and it is Slammin! Always cooked and seasoned just right. Chips and dip are off the chart as are the empenadas both chicken and beef. Nothing bad to say at all.

The staff at this location is phenomenal. So attentive and make our frequent trips such a pleasure. Absolutely love the tortilla soup. Great house margarita and reasonably priced. The new fit menu is a plus and caters to those who want to dine out but on a calorie budget. Yum!

How much can one really expect from a large tex-mex chain? Bring friends (or the kiddos) and the bland food and service won't matter so much. We unlocked the yelp check in deal for queso, which is basically melted velveeta with diced tomatoes. I ordered a pick two for $7.95 which comes with beans and rice. My drink was the most expensive purchase of the evening at $9 and it was watered down. Plenty of parking and a nice (albeit standard) vibe make for a solid 2*

I don't even know where to begin with this place. Their salsa is perfect, queso to die for and I can't even put into words how amazing their bbq salmon is. I get it with double veggies which are peppers and zucchini, both of which are grilled with lime juice to perfection. I absolutely love this place

We just spent almost 3 hrs here for the worst experience ever had in a restaurant. After complaining that we have been here for 2 hrs the manager took 10% off the bill which was basically a total insult of our time. It took almost a whole hour and three other mistakes running checks before this was settled. Will NEVER come here again!!!!

When On the Border opened years ago we went with high hopes. They charged the table for sides sour cream and the service was poor so I stayed away for a long time. I also bad mouthed the place whenever I had a chance. Oh and I might have taken some their plates in my to go container but that is another story... Fathers Day, lunch, my boyfriend and I decide to give it another chance. The waiter was the best part of our meal. I believe his name was Darrious, if I am wrong boo to me but his stellar service lives on. He was friendly, explained the menu, never let our drinks run out and overall you could tell he wanted us to enjoy ourselves. He went the extra mile, especially for a lunch shift. Impressed!! The food was pretty good too. Unlimited chips and salsa for free is a good start in my book. I got veggie fajitas and it was two meals worth of food for me. The only downfall was the very small portion of guacamole they served it with and when I asked for extra they of course charged for it. My boyfriend got the fish tacos and they too were a large portion. He seemed to enjoy them saying the only issue was he wished there was more sauce as it was fried fish. They did sit us right in front of the kitchen which was a tad annoying since the place wasn't that busy. I would go back and that is a vast improvement over how I felt the first time I went there.

The chips and salsa are awesome!! Nice and spicy, just the way I like it. There's homemade guacamole too. I originally 100% hearted this place when I first moved to the Warwick area, for the fact they had grilled fish tacos. For some reason the menu changed a bit and so did the flavor. Not awful but not as good as it used to be. The drinks are good too with many authentic Mexican beers on tap. The margaritas are hit or miss depending on the bartender you have. Some days, they are all sour mix and some others are a perfect balance where 2 is all you need for the night. My man and I will still continue to come here if we are in the area.

super busy!!! which is a great sign if you ask me. The food was pretty good. we had empenadas as an appetizer. My first time trying them and I liked them. I had a Chili Rellano and enchillada... I had to send the Chili Rellano back because the outside was piping hot and dark brown but when I cut into it, the inside was completely cold and the cheese was still shedded inside, not even a little melted. But the replacement was really good (I would order it again). The beans and rice were decent. The service was just ok, I had to wonder if she even wanted a tip. We had to keep asking for items and she would just disappear. It was close to impossible to get refills on water and drink.

This place really really deserves a 3.5 after the great service we received the other night. This is a great place for a large group; they assigned two waiters for our table of 15 people and made sure our waters/drinks/chips/salsa were never empty. What really made it a 4 star experience was that they were willing to split the bill individually for each person, which made paying at the end a breeze. Great, great service. As for the food, it's really a 2-3 star place. It's good, but not great, and certainly not authentic. Typical american-mexican food with a few cali/tex-mex type dishes thrown in (ie: grilled avocado enchilada). The highlight of the meal was actually a sauce they let a friend and I try when waiting for the rest of our party. The server asked what we liked, recommended a dish, and let us try the sauce that accompanied it. Forget the name now, unfortunately, but it was a creamy, cilantro blend. I ended up going for the cheese enchiladas as the rest of the menu was rather vegetarian unfriendly. The enchiladas were filled with the typical cheeses and onions, topped with a rather boring red sauce, and sided with black beans and rice (the rice was pretty good). Done again, I probably would have asked for no sauce and just put some salsa on the top, as it had a lot more flavor/kick. We also ordered three "Live!" guacamole appetizers for the table to share. I guess it's a novelty if you've never made guac before, but for the extra $2, it's hardly worth it to just watch them mash up a few avocados. The only difference between this and the normal guac is you can pick how much of each ingredient (onions, jalepeno, etc) to put in. Prices here are fortunately a plus --- most dishes are under $10. Salsa and chips are free as they should be, and quite good. Is it a place I'll be going back? Probably not. But if you're looking for a good mexican restaurant accommodating to large groups, it's not a bad choice.

Since my last review, friends and I have opted to give this place another go. Good thing we did. The service was much improved and the food was great. Still not the BEST mexican I've had, but what do you want when you go to a chain restaurant?

Nice place to watch a game, get ice cold beers, and their warm salsa chips and dip are the best around. Fun place.

  • Victoria K.

Okay, so I think it's pretty clear that this is NOT authentic Mexican cuisine. I don't think anyone can argue otherwise. I was actually quite shocked when my plate arrived and one of my enchiladas was drenched in a meat sauce (strangely similar to what I'd see in a cheap Italian restaurant) and the other in a sour cream sauce. What ever happened to traditional red and green chili sauces? Also, my soft taco was served on a flour tortilla as opposed to the traditional (and far superior) corn tortilla. Enough said. In any case, I was starving, and the food managed to satisfy. Maybe with a couple margaritas, my opinion would have drunkenly gotten better.

Came to this place on a whim. First time eating here, I've heard pretty average things about it, nothing spectacular, yet nothing really horrible either. It was the beginning of the weekend and it was beyond packed. Wait-time wasn't entirely so bad. Inside I would have to say looked pretty nice, kinda nice to see the chefs cooking in front of you as you walk in. Somewhat like a Mexican hibachi, but not quite. Anyways cut to the service, like I said it was a rather busy day, the waiter seemed nice but I kinda had a vibe like he was rushing us, esp.when we were ordering. That's just the vibe I was getting, who knows maybe he's just a person that naturally talks fast? Either way, not a big deal. I had the pepper jack chicken enchilada which was good and not at all spicy like I thought it would be. Had I not been starving I don't think I would have been able to finish it. In addition, place gets extra points for special bday mentions and a really good hot fudge brownie ice cream. I think that's really great that they do that. Overall good first exp., better expectations than I had given it.

  • Derek A.

So let's start this off by stating the obvious: this is a chain, so we're not talking about a small little neighborhood Mexican restaurant that serves authentic Mexican food. It serves Tex-Mex that is filled with lots of yummy melted cheese, refried beans, peppers and onions. Not that there's anything wrong with that! What it does, it does well, especially if you stick to the old standbys of enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, burritos and chimichangas. I will say that some of their "more adventurous" fare isn't executed as well. I had the Pepper Jack Chicken Grilled Enchilada and was disappointed - the chicken was fine, but the peppers and onions were basically raw. They probably touched the grill at some point. However, the margaritas are good, the chips and salsa excellent, and next time I go, I'll be sure to get one of my usual choices.

  • Scott Y.

I know that I am going to lose any Mexican food cred that I have by saying this, but that's OK since I never really had any Mexican food cred. I love OTB. I love their chimichangas. I love their margaritas. I love their service. I love their margaritas. I love this place. Be prepared for what it is, though. It's a place that people that like chimichangas love. If you're a Mexican food purist, and you know things like the fact that Mexicans don't actually eat chimichangas, this probably isn't the place for you. Then again, if you're that guy; what are you doing in Rhode Island?

came here again with a friend from back at home. we didn't want to go to the city so we went here for a quick bite. we sat outside to enjoy the beautiful evening and started off with frozen drinks and shakened margaritas. there was something a little off about our server. she almost acted as if we were her friends (not in a good way) so she didn't have to really treat us like customers. im not sure really what it was. we sat down and she introduced herself and was a little too casual for us. for example, once i had seen one of their beergaritas and i was asking where that was on the drink menu. she responded with 'oh thats on our other drink menu, i never bring that out but i guess i will'. then we saw through the windows that inside the bar it seemed like they were playing some sort of game. we asked about it and she responded 'oh its some sort of dumb family feud thing. this is the first night we are doing it so they are still trying to figure out the kinks because right now they are doing it so wrong.' although this was a little strange when we ordered fajitas and said we were going to split it, she had the kitchen put things on individual plates so that we didnt have to eat off each others plates. kudos to her for thinking of that. also the outside seating area started to get busy but she seemed to handle herself well. odd experience this time

Madeleine's Thoughts Alas, my first review on the east coast... but sadly it will hopefully not be as good as food gets out here... or i'm screwed. On The Border is a chain restaurant that I've seen errywhere (including Missouri!). My mom and I decided to venture in for some food after going to the Sears across from it for some college goodies (because everyone loves a good vacuum). We arrived and waited 10 minutes before we were even greeted at our table. Minus one star already and we haven't even been told who was serving us. Fantastic. Once the waiter arrived everything was running smoothly. The waiter seemed chipper and our food was good, considering it wasn't authentic at all. The other reason for a loss of star was because the waiter never asked if I wanted a refill, though my drink was demolished within 10 minutes of its placement in my hand, and the black beans I got with my combo plate were sitting in a salty soup. Blechk. Overall I'd eat here if I was in the mood and it were one of a few options around. The dessert menu looks tasty though... will definitely have to try that if I return...

Hands down the best MARGARITA anywhere, believe me I'm a die hard margarita lover and never found another place that compares to the ones on OTB. My favorite is the house OTB strawberry. My friend and I go here for girls night out all the time. The food is a little different for me, it has taken several visits for me to find some dishes that I can say I enjoyed. Personally I love their "Guacamole live". It's a must have with your drinks. Their quesadillas are pretty good, unlimited chips and Salsa is a big plus. At the end I love their margaritas and guacamole but not in love their main dishes. Oh the manager is really sweet and attentive, she even knows my friend my her first name, the waitstaff has always be awesome too. Would recommend this restaurant for a couple of drinks, chips, salsa and guacamole.

Happy Hour after work. wow, this spot totally surprised me! I kinda expected bad Mexican food... but wow, the worst chimichanga in my life! (thinking about a 1 star rating) Service was slow... 20 minutes to order my drinks and 20+ minutes to receive my drinks. I understand they where kinda busy. Service improved when we were the server's only table. The drinks were good and strong (so i'll give you another star) I hope we dont have another happy hour at this spot...

On The Border has surprisingly tasty mexican food for a chain restaurant. This location has a nice ambiance in the bar and regardless of where you sit you can see at least two tv's. The service is great and have only had one bad experience in the countless times we've come here for lunch or dinner. The deep fried avocado is delicious.

  • Duncan E.

I've been to On the Border in Warwick several times and the food has been the one thing that has remained consistent during all of my visits. I'd say the food is in the range of "good" to "above average" (for my simple taste in Mexican food that is less than authentic but still satisfies). The service has been very inconsistent - I've had amazing service here (ok, once) and I've had terrible service here. Unfortunately, I've had terrible service on more than one occasion. Rude waitresses, long waits for food & long waits for drinks (which is hard to comprehend when the restaurant is close to empty) and on one occasion, after being seated, it took so long for a waitress to even approach us that I just walked out with my girlfriend and we went elsewhere. I'll continue to patronize this restaurant but one more incident and I'll have to give up on this place completely - or just order the food to be picked up, because the food is not what is holding this restaurant back.

  • Jay E.

We have had lunch at On the Border a few times and bottom line it's just decent chain Mexican food. The staff is friendly, the dining room and bar areas are large and clean but the food is nothing special. There aren't too many Mexican food options in the area so if you are craving it, On the Border is worth visiting.

I had to drop off some good friends at the airport in Warwick on our way home from a trip to Foxwoods and we all decided to grab lunch at On The Border. In addition to eating some nachos that tasted much like a barn smells, I had to follow them up with a mouth full of crow. I just hope that this experience was a fluke because I really liked this place. The 40 minute trip to eat at On The Border will probably not be made anytime soon. This lunch is going to have a positive impact on Acapulco's (Franklin, Mass) bottom line.

We've been to this restaurant a few times since it opened a couple of years ago. The food is what is to be expected at chain Mexican restaurant, with the standard fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, etc, but hardly what anyone could call authentic Mexican food (please don't go there expecting an authentic experience - if you do, I don't know what else to tell you). While the entrees have always been acceptably good (I've tried just about something from every part of the menu), I've never been terribly impressed with the sides (refried or black beans, and rice), and last night was no exception, when mine came out lukewarm at best, and cool in parts of the serving. The service has always been fast, efficient, and friendly. The margaritas have also been good when I've had them (I had beer last night). The atmosphere can be loud at times, but not terrible if you know what to expect going in. This place is good for large groups I think, but if you don't use the call ahead seating expect a wait as, at least on the weekends, this place fills up quickly. Also, make sure you check out the menu online, as they have recently changed it, including removing my fiancee's standby order, the double-stacked quesadilla. Oh yeah, the bottomless chips are not bad most of them time either.

  • Dani G.

Yes I recently gave this spot another go. We did it takeout style. Chicken burrito and Fajita salad. Rice, beans and salsa were decent, meats were ok. I still prefer El Tapatio to any mexican restaurant in the Kent County Area.

Crap food. Even crappier service. This place makes Taco Bell a better dining destination. If you're in Warwick, drive up route 2 to Agave. Better service and food.

This isn't the greatest place in the world. I used to work here and I must say I wouldn't eat here knowing the menu is so unhealthy. I mean who adds half a gallon of butter to mix in the rice that's disgusting. The refried beans are gross they add bacon fat to it which is beyond gross! This isn't a spot for you to go wine and dine. It's a great spot to catch a drinks with friends before heading out somewhere that is all.

3.5 stars Came here with a pretty large group (9 people) for a mini-reunion of sorts. Call ahead seating worked great (waited less than 5 min after showing up), and considering how busy it was, they were very accommodating, even offering to give us an extra table once the party next to us left if we felt too cramped. I'd been to this chain once before (different location) and remember it being good, and I was happy with this trip as well. Bad news to start off the meal... they were out of chips!?! what kind of Tex-Mex place runs out of chips? No worries though... a fresh batch came out within 10 min or so, and we had some nice drinks to tide us over. 5 of us decided to split a pitcher of margaritas... yum. Salt rimmed margarita glasses (well... one sugar rimmed for Vanessa)... very salty. The chips that came out... not so salty... but that was fixed easily enough with the shakers on the table. The salsa was zesty with just the right amount of kick. After agonizing over all the choices on the menu, I finally decided on the the chicken and shrimp fajitas (after Tasha talked me out of the multi-item sampler dish.... quesadillas, enchilada, empanada, taco... still looked good when Vanessa's came out, but I was definitely glad I went with the fajitas. Though I definitely had way too much food to finish and had no room left over to try some of the delicious desserts that had been staring at me from the pamphlet on the center of the table the entire duration of the meal. All in all, everyone left happy and full (some of us a little too full). Definitely one of the better Tex-Mex chains I've been to.

OK I love on the boarder, I always go to the one at home in MD. When the one in Warwick opened up I was THRILLED! I love the tacos, the brisket and the XX fish mmmmmm. Just went here for cinco de mayo, all the employees were so nice and happy! Our waiter was a great funny guy, and gave us some free beads too! They were raising money for susan G. breast cancer, we donated and got a coupon for free dessert! I got the new Agave Margarita, it was delish! The chips and salsa are great. We took home a HUGE thing of salsa to eat another day :)

I was born and raised in New Mexico, lived my youth in California. Mexican food I know. This greasy cheese-mountain of Spanish rice and flavorless beans needs to be sent to the starving masses. I am very forgiving, being as I am chronically deprived. My dismay mounted, course by course as I sat through a very friendly and brightly-lit early evening dinner at On The Border. AND "On the Border" is one of my favorite songs by The Eagles!!! Drove many times to its groove between CA and NM. Nope. Nicest wait-staff in the world. Decent prices. Cheerful ambiance. Food is unmentionable.

Good Chips, Cute Waitress, Mediocre Service, ( but it was valentines day and the restaurant was busy.) All You can eat Enchiladas and they will sub out the beans for a salad. for $8.99 Score! I was the DD, my friends enjoyed the pitcher of Margarita's. If I am in town on business again, I'd go here, but if I lived here probably not.

The seervice was good. never waited for anything. Apps were good and big enough to share. the maels were a good size but just ok. I cant say that my meal was amazing. this is a chain restaurant and thats how the food tastes. My biggest issue was the price. I dont usually compain about price when i get good food but for ok food the prices should not be this high. I will probably com back but not that often wich is too bad.

I wasn't sure if I should give 2 or 3 stars. I've eaten in at On the Border before and the experience was divine enough to make me want more. On the other hand, I've contacted them for their catering services via their chosen online method, and never heard from them again. Sad.

Showed up at 7:15pm on a Thursday night looking for a table for 3. Checked in with the attentive and friendly host and, although there were at least 5 empty tables in view, we received the electronic notification device informing us that we were waiting for a table. After a reasonable 15 minute delay we were seated at a clean comfortable booth that was against a floor to ceiling wall in the middle of the dining area. We had an appropriate greeting from our waitstaff and ordered margaritas/wine. They were received timely and were excellent, but were soon to be followed by numerous fruit flies that had settled against the wall bordering our booth. After shooting down at least a dozen of the pesky beasts the remaining flock just stared at us from the wall apparently deciding that discretion was the better part of valor. So they just loomed over the table and taunted us with their mere presence. The complimentary salsa - chip combo is among the best we tex-mex lovers have ever had, and as always it is a 0.6 salsa to 1.0 basket of chips combo so with multiple guests there is never any satisfaction as to serving size. It is never a one basket of chips to one bowl of salsa ration...More excellent salsa please. The meals were a few minutes past perfect in terms of being delivered at the right temperature, but the quality was very good, except a chile relleno that was the shape of a baseball?, tasty though! One of the second margaritas delivered was brown, or as I like to say, properly weighted in tequila. Overall, excellent job by the kitchen staff(seen in action), good job by the waitstaff, but let's get a general manager in here to focus on the details like one or 2 more kitchen/bar/waitstaff and get rid of your FFAF (fruit fly air force).

Really good place. If you like spicy food(Hot..hot..hot) try the firecracker stuffed jalapenos here. Also, the Chips & salsa that they serve are way too good. Great place to go on a friday night.

  • Armand A.

The food is absolutely delicious and the service is always above expectations. Prices are reasonable and the complimentary chips and homemade salsa keep coming. The Chicken Flautas are delicious as well as the Pork Tamales. If you like spicy, the Firecracker Jalapenos are stuffed with chicken and Cheese and are absolutely incredible. Having lived in RI for many years I have been to many Mexican restaurants that have closed with some still opened. This is by far the best restaurant out of all.The best time to go is in the afternoon when it isn't as busy. At night there is a wait but it is well worth it. If you enjoy Mexican, this will be an experience. You have to try it.
