Great food and good drinks. Nice workers and owner there. I would give it 5 stars, but the place needs updating and the prices are a little high. Taking it down to 3 stars I ordered the poo poo platter and they put everything in the same container that leaked with sticky wing sauce and ruined my whole meal, the table was covered in sauce that I had just cleaned.

Good food in an old place There is not much new about the New Canton Restaurant. It's been here since at least the early 80's and certainly looks it. The sign is kind of weather beaten and the building and decor definitely dated. It's not the type of place that will turn heads. Sometimes old can mean crappy and other times old can mean good. With the New Canton Restaurant old just means it's been around a while. Even though it was pretty dark inside and the style and decorations a bit odd, everything was very clean and smelled really nice. Kind of like the feeling you get when you go into your grandmother's kitchen. Some things might seem a bit strange or even bizarre but you also get the feeling that the place has seen some serious and cool food pass through it. The menu is pretty basic, this isn't one of those fancy and trendy Asian Bistro joints with a myriad of changing dishes with poetic or incomprehensibly metaphorical names. New Canton has pretty much what you would expect and I suspect it hasn't change much since it opened. Some great veggie fried rice, lo mien, pu-pu platters and some the the best egg rolls anywhere. Everything tastes fresh and not saturated with sauces or salt. Not a lot to choose from but what they have is good. I have a feeling a lot of their business is take out and a lot of the same people come here again and again. It's a place you could become very accustom to because you know exactly what to you are getting. Nothing fancy or unique for your eyes or taste. Just a friendly local restaurant serving good food at inexpensive prices.

I have been going here since...as long as I can remember. Other than it being a little outdated and pricey, it is more than worth it. I think it is the best Chinese food in the area...best fried rice, beef teriyaki, moo goo gai pan, etc that I've tried...I could go on and on. All I can do is suggest: that if anyone is in the area or just wants to enjoy delicious Chinese food, try this establishment :) The people are great there and the food is always fast and fresh..Enjoy!!

very good food at the right price, the whole place needs a makeover but don't let that discourage you.

Tried this place based on other reviews. The lo mein tastes like weird cup of noodles. I got takeout so won't comment on the interior, that stuff doesn't matter to me anyway. I'd just avoid Chinese in RI altogether.

The breakfast was actually really good there and they have good drink specials. Prices are very reasonable and the staff is very attentive.

Limited menu but what they serve is exquisitely tasty. This place has been here as long as I have been alive ...27 years...they're doing something right. Like everyone else says, it's old and small, but friendly and tasty outweighs the rest. I always get the dumplings, the ginger scallion sauce is to die for, best I ever had. Lo Mein and Fried Rice are both great.

The BEST General Tso's chicken I've ever had and I have been to quite a few different places. It has some kick to it with red pepper flakes. The color is also distinct from other places which is a bright red. The portion is big and tastes so good. It may not be as big as places like Seven Moons, but IMO, it's alot better in taste and service. The rice is pretty on par to other places and so are the golden fingers. Chow mein is one of the best around and you get a small white rice unlike Tong's. Limited menu but the staff is kind. The inside is pretty small and accommodates under a dozen tables. They have yet to mess up an order and I've been here dozens of times. They even get my special requests correct.

Had the pleasure of going to the restroom and seeing human feces on the toilet, thank you to the staff-disgusting. Food wasn't that bad after half a dozen scorpion bowls, tough spot.

Excellent Chinese food. They use real sweet and sour for the chicken (not the generic red sauce you see everywhere). The rice is amazing. Takeout is even served in the old fashioned carton. Owner and staff are very nice and friendly. We now have a new neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Can't wait to go back. PS my wife is picky and she loved it! :)

We got take out from here and it was NOT good. Chicken with broccoli and chicken with peanuts and veggies were so bad that we threw most if away. The food just didn't taste like anything... General Taos chicken was ok but weirdly red-colored. Steamed dumplings were good at least.... Won't be ordering from here again.

One of our favorites! Been going here for about 15 years now. It still looks the same. Old fashioned Chinese restaurant. Dark, minimal lighting etc. They don't have a menu online, so I uploaded their menus. They also serve breakfast (never tried it). Best General Tsao around! I have a very picky husband and he agreed... Thumb's up!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
