Best American style Chinese around. You have to get over the carrots as a Chinese vegetable (everyone seems to be doing that) and getting Italian bread with your meal (classic RI move). Food is prepared quickly. I like the General Tso's Chicken, deep fried big chunks of white meat with a little broccoli. House Fried Rice is a must have. Dry chicken wings with soy sauce side, spare ribs and egg rolls are terrific.

I grew up here, and Chen's was the only place in the area. It was a little better back then, too. Quality has fallen in the last few years, but it's decently cheap and there are big portions. It's your typical American Chinese fare, and it's kind of a dive spot. I'd go elsewhere if I could.

Wow, I forget how technologically square my hometown is. lol I can't believe there's no reviews for this place yet. So I've been going here since I was like 3-4. (around when I first moved to Narragansett) I have yet to find a Chinese food place that even compares to this one. It is by far the best Chinese food in existence. Sure, it probably doesn't taste anything like real, authentic Chinese food. I'd say it's more polynesian influenced but good god, even the day old leftovers are worth raving about. Everything from the blue flamed pu pu platters right down to the oversized delicious scorpion bowls are a big deal. It's really one of those place you have to experience to believe. My favorite dish was the orange chicken since they gave you a full, fried breast, the sauce and actual oranges to go on top. I'd say if you're more into savory chinese food maybe stay away but I don't think I will ever find a place better than this one, even after visited several chinatowns.

I've been dining at Chen's for close to ten years now, and have always been satisfied with the food. Their portions are massive, and they make an outstanding Crispy Fried Duck. If you really want to have some fun, have the Chen's Special drink from the bar. It will completely knock you on your butt after only drinking one. Now I don't go there just for the booze, they also make the best Egg Foo Yung in the Ocean State, and their Sesame Chicken and General Tso's are great.

I went here and tried the pan fried peking dumplings, house lo mein, and crab rangoons. The rangoons were not so good, they seemed more to be just sweet cream rangoons than having any flavor or contents of crab. The dumplings were excellent however and come with a very complimentary sauce, though the dumplings themselves don't need it. I also found the lo mein to have a large serving size, great lo mein noodles, and good flavor. The decor/layout was nothing special at this place, but the menu has a lot of variety to it, with good flavor in most of the food. I could easily recommend this place and/or come back myself.

I've always bragged about Chen's and reminisced about it from my days at URI. I went last week...after a 10 year hiatus and was disappointed. Maybe I'd always experienced Chen's with my beer goggles on? The food comes in a big heap and there is too much food. The rice hides a layer of chicken and the egg roll dangles off the side. It is all sort of floating in secret sauce. The egg rolls are delicious. Nice and big with a crisp exterior. The food comes out quickly and the service was good. This is the only restaurant I can ever remember going to that doesn't have free refills. The decor leaves a lot to be desired. I don't think it has changed a bit. And, there is not one window in the place. Chen's has a convenient location, easy parking, a diverse menu, and decent prices but it could be SO much better.

Shoulda been a 3.5 stars but we've been going here since I've been 8 and its like the place is in a time warp. It's a little dated, but maybe thats the allure. Kind of reminds me of a Debbie Wong's with their own flair. They do all the little things great; real brown friend rice, shrimp with lobster sauce is brown with real pork/meat, scorpion bowls that should come with a breathalizer and a pu-pu platter that took 3 days to complete. Went on a Friday night and was shocked how it wasn't jam packed in the summer. Maybe there's better nearby these days but the food and service here is still very good.

Best Chinese food you will ever have! So worth the fat belly! I have been coming to Chens for many many years! We typically get the house chicken special, pork fried rice, chicken wings, teriyaki chicken and beef, and egg roles. Everything is amazing, hot, well flavored, and unforgettable. The service has always need impeccable. The most friendly staff and fast service, even when you're being a pig like us!

I grew upon Chens! I can remember being SO excited when my parents announced we were going there! For over 25 years the food was always terrific and never a letdown. HOWEVER.... The past couple of years has been VERY hit or miss. I'm taking a long break now since the last order (the beginning of Jan 2011) was the straw. We ordered take-out. Gripe number one is the prices. I'm always amazed at the grand total for not a lot of food. Individually it doesn't seem bad but tallied up it's almost highway robbery for a mere 4 dishes. I'm not a total cheapskate, and if the food was up to par I wouldn't even bring it up. First the order taker forgot to place one of the orders, so we had to call, wait another 15 minutes, drive back, pay, and drive back home again. Again, normally I'd let that slide too. My extra order of hoisen (plum) sauce was also not included apparently. A definite drag as moo shu for me is a can't eat without it. But it was too ridiculous to have to drive back again when the family is already ravenous and now annoyed. Let's get to why I would ever write a negative review for Chens. The FOOD! Ugh. Like I said, it's been a bit up and down but that night really took the cake!! Everything was incredibly BLAND!! The meat all tasted stale, old, chewy. The wonton soup had 1 piece of pork and tasted like bland dishwater. Even the brown gravy was gross as where the breaded chicken my girls usually devour. The moo shu also no flavor, no spiciness. The beef lo Mein had different noodles, these huge bloated bland ropes. All in all for the ineptitude of the order taker, being inconvenienced, then paying for such horrid food, we're all set with Chens. I gave 3 stars because Chens used to be sooo good and like I said I grew up on it!! I have stated to many out of state friends that they were incomparable to any other Chinese restaurant I've ever eaten anywhere. 3 stars for the yummy glory it once was (and I hope can be again). Either fire the drunk chef or something as talking to friends this is becoming quite the reoccurrence.

I grew up here too. I also have had the luck to experience more and better. I used to love Chen's; it was the ONLY Chinese Restaurant around. Then Dragon Palace (now New Dragon,) and Lai Lai's (is Lai Lai even around anymore?) moved in. Okay, well I consider Chan's to be the local chinese diner. The food is comfort food, the dining rooms are old and the teenyboppers eat here. No biggie, sometimes I will visit for the nostalgia. The General Tso's plate is a big serving of fried rice (is that hot dog pieces they put in there? They're too soft to be anything but processed meat!) an egg roll (tightly packed and the kind I love 'cause I grew up on 'em,) and the battered meat drenched with sauce and even the red chili pods. Ok, I have to admit I have an unhealthy draw to this dish. But the chow mien is droopy and the vegetables soggy. It's a deep fried haven here. That's why I call it a local chinese diner. The locals go here all the time. The fryolators are always on. I wonder if they use bain maries in the back to keep certain foods warm. I admit that even though this food that is suppose to be Asian fare but really resembles something that induces heart attacks is not something anyone but the emaciated should be eating I come her at least once a year.

Chen's has to be my favorite Chinese food place in RI. I literally travel over 30 minutes to get the food here. Coming from a RI'er, that is saying alot. Food is delicious and they use only white meat in their chicken. Serving sizes are incredibly huge. I went in the other night very hungry and by the time I was full, I still had a plateful of General's chicken. Plenty of leftovers here. Also, the scorpion bowl for two was very well made. One star was left out due to the atmosphere which is not the greatest. They need an update in here. Service was friendly but not the most professional with our waitress chomping on gum. Go here for the good food (or get take out).

The food was just bad. There is nothing else I can say. The only saving grace was the pre packaged fortune cookie.

Probably the first place I ever ate Chinese food. So I measure all Chinese food against the Chen's yardstick. They have the best egg rolls and fried rice--I crave it all the time. My only wish is that they delivered to San Francisco! Generous portions. Friendly service.

Chen's is a throwback. The servings are large, the food is good but somewhat typical Chinese food. Loved the fried rice. Everyone seems to love the egg rolls and, of course, the Chen special is the drink of choice. I don't quite get some of the other reviews where they complain about the portions being too big or food "dangling of the side". I also like the decor which is sort of a dive but I find it warm and sort of nostalgic. Do you go to a Chinese restaurant for a fancy modern decor? I say no!

Can't vouch for anything but the egg rolls and fried rice. But each of these are among the best I've had anywhere, including NYC.

This is the local chinese restaurant I grew up on. I was completely faithful until Seven Moon's opened up and answered my prayers of having a place that offered somewhat decent Thai food in South County. I'm ashamed to say I've only been back for take out a few times since. But every now and then (usually the months of january/febuary for some reason) I crave the boneless spareribs or general tso chicken and veggie fried rice. Chen's will always be in my heart!

Used to love Chen's. Past several years food quality has slipped a bit while prices have gone way up. My Wife and I ate-in on New Years Day and we' re not impressed with the cleanliness and run down look of the place. I am "in the business" and am very aware of sanitation in places I eat. We really should have cancelled our order and left when a cockroach ran up the wall next to me and went behind my booth. We informed our waitress who didn't seem at all surprised (scary) and asked to move. She said to "sit anywhere" and we took a table in the middle of the room away from the wall. She came over a minute later and basically scolded us for sitting at a table for 5 or 6 people instead of 2. I was a bit put off as i could clearly see they weren't busy. The food was ok even though we didnt eat much, took it to go and threw it out when we got home. The roach thing really diminished our appetite. Obviously, we won't be going back.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
