For anyone who hates on this A&W, haters gonna hate. I have loved this place since I can remember. The root beer is made on premise, and I haven't ever had a better soft drink. They are cash only, but it's to keep this mom and pop place afloat and still have prices be low, and they are quite vocal about cash only on their online presence too which is great. I have only done car service once, at my last visit last night, which was great. I knew exactly what I was going to order, but they gave me a menu just in case. I always go with a #6 (cheese burger, fries, and root beer combo) and if I'm feeling special, I'll get some cheese curds as well. Sometimes I'll just go with the cheese curds if I'm feeling extra special. The burger is fresh meat, and never over cooked.. The fries are crispy and fresh, seeing that everything is made to order here. No heat lamps! The BEST thing here though... are the cheese curds. Imagine fresh mozzarella string cheese in a great breading, and fried until delicious and awesome. They melt in your mouth and are just great. Some people may say 'oh well, 4$ for cheese curds, and egads, $7 for a cheeseburger combo' but what I say is 'Try going to McD's to enjoy a fresh RB, fries and burger. Oh wait... you can't.' This place will always be a staple in my book, and I'm glad to be supporting local businesses instead of the chain restaurants that are abound on Route 44.

Been here numerous times.food is nothing special and not the quickest.cheese curds are good.i normally come for a half gallon of root beer. Little expensive at $5+ but for some reason it has a flavor that you can't get in any other fountain, bottle or can. Old school car hop service is available and they do classic car nights.

Standard fast food with a hint of nostalgia. Although I use the term "fast" loosely as we did seem to wait a bit for our food. I was excited for my Root Beer Float, but the ice cream part of it had a hard/icy/crunchy texture which I'm not sure if that happens when it goes into the soda, or if the ice cream was just old and icy. Somewhat disappointing. We came on cruise night though which was super fun and I would totally come back again on a Tuesday for that!

Nothing super special about the food or the service. The three stars is pretty much for the root beer alone. The last time I went, I waited in line for 20 minutes only to be informed that they don't accept credit cards, and that there is no ATM on the premises. Great. However, the prices are very reasonable, especially if you order the daily special. The burgers and weiners are pretty... meh. But you get what you pay for. It's a better alternative to McD's across the road.

Root beer is the bomb. Cheese curds are the bomb too. Onion Rings, delish. Chili Cheese fries, epic. Bacon cheeseburger was good, but nothing exceptionally amazing. FYI, in keeping with the old time-y theme...cash only.

They are closed! I drove 30 minutes to smithfield but was so disappointed. I looked up A&W official website to check the location before I went there. The website should be updated and in Yelp as well.

I've eaten at this A&W a handful of times over the years. I found their food to be nothing special and their prices are quite high for fast food, but I always enjoyed their old-fashioned car hop service. The last time I was there I took my young daughter so she could experience the old car hop service for herself. It was a gray day in October and the parking lot was empty. We pulled in for lunch and I was excited to show her how how it works. The big sign in the parking lot says "Lights On for Service". I flashed the car lights and waited for the waitress to appear - nothing. I drove the car up closer to the window and flashed the lights again - nothing. I got out of the car and walked to the window. I saw two women inside talking and I asked if they were open. The older one (the manager or owner) said yes they were open. I asked if they were going to come out to the car to take our order. She replied, "No, it's too cold today to serve outdoors - you can place your order at the window." WHAT?? I even told her that we were there so my daughter could see how the car hop service worked. Sorry, she obviously didn't care. I was ready to drive off - but we were hungry. I placed the order and then had to go back to the window to pick it up when it was ready. They couldn't even be bothered to bring it out to the car to give a little girl a thrill. How disappointing! Bottom line - A&W blew it with their lousy attitude and service on that day. The food was never very good anyway. I'll never go back.

One word, AWful! One Thursday afternoon on our lunch break my coworker and I decided to try something different as we were in the mood for burgers and hot dogs. I thoroughly regret suggesting A&W. Our experience was inexcusably terrible from the moment we arrived until about a day later, when we still didn't quite feel right from the food. We pull into the parking lot excited at the idea of getting waited on from the car. A sign says to turn your headlights on to be served. We park and turn the lights on. About ten minutes goes by and we come to the conclusion that no one is coming to our car. Not wanting to waste our break time, we just decide to walk up to the window and order. We walk to the window and proceed to stand there while a younger man and older woman loudly argue with one another regarding an employee who had called out and them being understaffed. They are arguing about whether or not to call another employee in, right in front of the ordering window. The young man begins to take our order and in the middle of taking it CONTINUES ARGUING with the woman! We couldn't help but laugh, this customer service was atrocious! Having never been to A&W and planning on bringing some food to our coworkers we ordered a large mix of things. We tried the 2 cheeseburgers for $3 deal, 2 hot dogs, 1 order of the cheese curds, and 1 order of chili cheese fries. We also ordered two sodas. For this it came to over $25! Pretty pricey for a burgers and fries fast food joint if you ask me! The wait for the food was pretty long...I'll chock that up to them being understaffed (as we were so gracefully informed). I approach the pick-up window to the get the food and feel quite uneasy, (considering how awful the experience had already been) and as I walk up to the window, I notice they have plenty of papers and advertisements taped for customers to read. I soon notice that stuck under the tape next to many of the advertisements are fruit flies, LOTS of them. GROSS. For whatever reason, I still ate the food. Damn my stingy-ness, but $25 bucks on burgers and hot dogs is not something I wanted to waste. Completely not to my surprise at this point, our order was wrong. I was given a regular root beer when I ordered a diet coke, my friend was given a diet coke float when she ordered a root beer, they put no condiments on our cheeseburgers, and forgot the mustard on my hotdog. I have NEVER thrown away a cheeseburger in my 24 years of life after just one bite until this day, it tasted freezer-burnt. The hot dog was edible but I can make better at home. And the cheese curds just tasted like grease and oil. The way the bag was packaged, my friend's chili-cheese fries were a complete mess at the bottom of the bag. I truly hope the other A&W locations are much better than this one but our experience will forever stand out in my mind as one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. We also felt sick into the next day after eating here. We will not be returning.

My wife and I were up the street at Stillwater Antiques and decided to drive to A&W for lunch. I got the #7 and she got the cheeseburger combo. I got chili cheese fries which turned out to be pretty good. The way they were packaged seemed a little unusual, but no problem. Ate them with a fork. The weiners (dogs) were okay and my wife liked the cheeseburger. The root beer was tasty and hardy, not like what you get at the supermarket. Service was pretty quick and the woman behind the counter was friendly. I wouldn't give this A&W 5 stars but I'd give them a strong 3.5. Next time we're out that way again around lunchtime we'll stop in again.

From a food perspective, it is not that it is 'bad', it is just that it is nothing to go out of your way for; and it is a little pricy on some items. The drings on the other hand are really good. The softserve is made daily on location. They also have some family friendly meals that are cost effecient and provide for a good outing.

They call me big daddy beans here idk why, they all have attitude here but I kinda like it if you know what I mean ;) call me or text me and mabye we can make something happen $7.50 an hr very discreet and casual always kiss you goodnight but back to the place...it's ok......

Ok, so if you have eaten at Shake Shack, Five Guys, In-N-Out, or BGR, A&W will never compare. It's much more fair to compare it to McD's or BK. Anyhow, if you stick to the wieners, you'll be a happy camper. If you're not from the New England area, this place is kinda special. Aside from expensive bottled root beer, this A&W serves up truly special root beer. And as most ppl have stated, this in itself warrants at least 3 stars. I've been about 3 times within the past couple of years and thought service was always good and the area was clean. It was my fault for trying the clam plate. Honestly, how can good seafood be $5 and come out of a fast food joint? I don't think 3 stars is necessarily bad but I don't think the prices they make you pay is a good value for what you get. Yes, stick to the wieners and root beer!

One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. I went here as a result of the RI Food Fights, in which we were only allowed to get the pastrami burger. When I asked what came on it, the waitress behind the counter sighed and loudly told me what came on it. What they ignored mentioning was that mustard also came on the burger, which I am allergic to. Luckily, I was able to trade my top bun for the bottom bun of a friend's burger, so I didn't break out into hives. The burger was actually a lot worse than a McDonald's burger. It was spongy, unseasoned and extremely greasy. I attempted to wash it down with a root beer float, but the root beer was practically flat, and the ice cream inside almost tasted sour. The entire shack is in dire need of renovation. The parking lot is a mess, the building itself is dirty, and there were way too many bugs around. I question the health standards of the business.

If your a Rhode Islander then you obviously have come here or its your first time. It's a bit of a drive but anywere in ri is about a 30 to 45 min drive and people will say it's to far. We come every year before the summer for the a&w float and a burger. I understand the 3 star rating typical fast food joint and nothing to tell your family about. It a nice change from burger King or mcd's

  • Linda A.

Came here to try the burgers. They are definitely not worth the money or effort. The mushrooms are the squishy canned kind, there were way too many onions, and the burger itself was a flat and sad frozen patty. I tried the fried cheese curds and they were delicious -- the only reason this isn't a one star review, to be honest. I also paid a dollar for a side of chipotle dipping sauce. Literally there were about two tablespoons of sauce in this container. I asked if this was normal, and the girl gave me a condescending look and answered yes. She mentioned she could give me more, but she'd have to charge me. Are you kidding? No thanks. I won't be back for sure.

This place deserves 3 solid stars but its getting 4 because of the people that came here and ordered anything other than a burger or dog and then were surprised it wasn't any good. Stop. Its like giving a bank a bad review because your kid didn't like the flavor lollipop the woman at the window gave her. I think people are crazy if they are driving any distance to get to this "Rhode Island Staple". However as people who eat fast food a couple times a year, my wife and I really enjoyed it. The burger I had was greasy and delicious, as expected. My wife really liked her hotdog. I also got chili cheese fries and they were outstanding. The rootbeer float was underwhelming. The ice cream had melted to nothing by the time I drank it, and I kind of get grossed out at the thought of drinking soda anyway. Maybe I would be more critical of the place if I was a connoisseur of fast cuisine but luckily I am not, and it was good. A&W was a worthy target for my yearly fast food binge.

The only old fashioned "car-hop" restaurant around here (that I know of). You pull up, and a waitress comes to your car, takes your order, then brings back a tray which hangs on your window. There's also a small area of outside seating. I was kind of unimpressed pulling into the lot. This location is quite dated, and in need of serious updating in my opinion. Typical fast food. Burgers, dogs, chicken, fries. Root beer is "made onsite" which is kinda neat. Overall, not a place I'd go out of my way to get to, but if I was in the area and looking for fast food, I'd consider it along with the typical competitors.

  • Rachel D.

Ok so the food is just average hamburgers and fries, their hot wieners are so-so but let's be real... We go .. Or at least I go for the root beer floats ... There doing something right with the root beer. It is sooo rich and so delicious. Worth it!!!! They also have daily specials. Check it out!

Came here to try out their burgers. Not really a fan of frozen patties but I understand that it's easier for consistency with chain restaurants. The burger was very messy and the mushrooms obviously came out of a can. I did not complain about the burger. Just tried to do my best to eat it since I was hungry. On another note, the root beer was good! You can't go wrong with stopping in for a refreshing A&W root beer float. I also ordered the cheese curds, which is deep fried cheesy goodness! Try that out as well! I probably won't be back unless it's a hot steamy day and I want a cold refreshing root beer.

A&W was THE place to go back in good 'ole PA for delicious chili dogs, fries, root beer floats, you named it, we ate it. Along with Long John Silvers' (they usually shared the building kinda like KFC & Taco Bell does here), I totally gained like 20lbs from each visit. And then it happened. We gave this location a try and along with my shattered heart, I promptly dropped the 20lbs. 'Sad to report, this location pales in comparison to what we were used to. While I certainly appreciate the retro touch, nothing says lovin' like poorly wrapped chili dogs on your lap. During my several visits, I was never actually served in my car or offered any type of roadside assistance: we simply patiently waited 15 minutes in line. The food is mediocre at best and by the time we'd be settled in, our "feast" would usually be a soggy mess. Worse though, was the service. While a few of the staff were friendly, there was this one chick in particular who had the most condescending, negative attitude I've ever seen at a restaurant (and that says a lot). I'm talking eye rolling, visible annoyance and deep sighing here. Generally I -love- A&W and cannot express enough that should you be elsewhere or going for a drive through PA, don't think for a second the quality at this location is representative of their chain as a whole.

I am giving this 2 stars for 2 reasons only. One is that they offer car hop service and those girls work hard. Two is that they make their root beer fresh daily and the floats are good. I would never, ever go here for the food. My wife ordered a grilled chicken salad. 20 minutes later she got a box with lettuce, 1 slice of tomato cut into 4 small pieces and about 6 bits of chicken. No cucumbers, carrots, onions, nothing. My chili cheese dog was small, the bun was okay, but the chili was below average and there was not enough cheese to taste it. And it was small. The onion rings were.... well I would never order them again... hard and crispy and tasteless. But honestly, go there on a Friday night and use the car hop service and get a root beer float and you will be fine

There's something classically majestic about this place. I grew up in Smithfield and this has always been a staple. Granted you can only eat there once every five years or you'll die of a heart attack... seriously I seen't it.

Well, one thing will not go over your head on a visit to the A&W shack: WE MAKE OUR OWN ROOT BEER HERE! ON THE PREMISES! -- thought bubble -- digging up the sassafrass root in the back, harvesting the sugar cane, infusing the imported vanilla bean pods from Madagascar, drawing spring water from the well, dissolving carbon dioxide one cup at a time... -- But if you're talking about adding some syrup to carbonated water, you know, the soda fountain at the McDonalds up the road makes it's OWN Code Red Mountain Dew and doesn't its customers me $4/cup. Is this root beer creamy-delicious? Yes, but please, I've had better. It's old-fashioned drive through style (with the tray that attaches to your window) or order at the window and sit at sticky picnic tables (with a ripped old plastic sign as "tablecloth" stapled to it) and gaze at the surrounding strip malls. Chicken fingers, "cheese" fries, blackened/wrinkled/microwaved? burger with browned iceberg lettuce, small fries, 2 root beers was a shocking $26 for sub-par fast food. Give me a little "pleasure" with my "guilty", guys. Bathroom = scary. Refilled ketchup bottle = scary. I felt like Bob as in "What About - ?" using napkins (akin to a square of Scott's toilet tissue) as a barrier to touch anything communal. Baby steps to french fries... I'm all for the experience of kickin it old school nostalgia-syle and all-American burgers and fries joints but if you can't do those right your HOMEMADE corn syrup vanilla-y root beer ain't enough to bring me back on its own.

A&W has been a family favorite since I was a kid. Now that I'm an adult I can't help but swing by for a fizzing cup of freshly made rootbeer. A&W still offers drive in service. Park in front -turn on the head lights, that's it ... they come to you. They offer everything from burgers to fries, hotdogs and floats. On designated evening you can swing by for their car show. People show up from all over to see the cars, listen to the DJ and reminisce about the good ol'days. I take my pup here all the time because it's a take out, or eat out only locations, a picnic table will do just fine!

  • Ryan D.

If you live in RI and southeastern Mass, you have to come to A&W. Most of us up north don't get to experience drive-in restaurants, so when one exists, it is one heck of a luxury experience. Have to go with a chili cheese dog. I mean why else would you go to A&W? Oh that's right their root beer. Go with the floats on this one. The only slight downside I have to A&W is that it appears that it is pricey. However compare what you just bought to what you would pay at a fast food joint and it would be pretty comparable. I'd love to go at least one more time before it closes for the winter.

Room temperature root beer, old tasting ketchup, sad excuse for a grilled chicken sandwich. Burgers are eh, fries are just okay, weiners are also lacking...sigh... I recall it was better awhile back, not sure what happened but disapponting. The carhop idea is very oldschool and cool, the prices are decent on daily specials but a bit overpriced for regular menu considering the food quality went downhill.

    (2)
  • Erin B.

I'm very sad to report that A&W has gone downhill in the last few years. It's still an experience worth having for the carhop and the root beer/floats but not for much else. The burgers are blah. There's absolutely nothing special about them and there are lots of fast food places that do them better. The wieners, my usual favorite fare in days gone by, are horribly plain. There is no flavor whatsoever now. What happened? There was not even a hint of celery salt nor anything savory about the meat. This was probably my biggest disappointment. The place does have small redeeming qualities though. The onion rings are great and notably light on the grease. The cheese curds follow suit. I personally love the root beer as well. It's not traditional hop-infused, spiced root beer but if you love the idea of a sweet root beer float, this is the best place around. Carbonation seems to vary by the batch though, tending to be light universally. The fries alone are nothing special but the chili cheese fries are a surprisingly light take on the concept. The chili is whole bean and not salty; this allows the cheese to provide most of the saltiness. I recommend mixing them up and digging in with a fork. I almost felt bad for the carhop girl this last time around. She was clearly alone and was very rushed everywhere she went. I'll give her a pass on not having a smile plastered on her face but her overall demeanor wasn't what I'd call great service. I've had great service here in the recent past though. Prices are up there so don't buy food piecemeal; the combos are where you'll find the most reasonable (but still a bit pricey) deals. Also, it's still cash only. WHY?! Bring the family for the carhop experience, root beer floats, and maybe appetizers but get a full meal elsewhere. It's very sad to see how far this landmark has gone downhill!

  • David H.

Lunch for two kids (8 and 10) and one adult male for $24? Two chili dogs, one chili cheese fry, one regular fry, one footlong regular dog and three regular root beers for $24. Nothing special and the place needed updating. Staff seemed indifferent, asked if we had coupons - i guess no one would pay full fare for this stuff. Take your kids elsewhere for lunch and it should be better and definitely cheaper.

  • Julie A.

I've been going to A&W since I was a little kid! Much like the Rustic Drive-in, it's one of those RI staples that you have to experience. The food is alright, but it's the "style" that I really like. It's a nice place for a pit stop if you're riding on your motorcycle through Rt. 44 or want to get old timey car service. Just turn on your headlights and a waiter/ess will be over to take your order. You must come for the Root Beer (Floats). I'm not sure what they do, but the root beer is especially delicious. They make it right on the premises which is pretty neat! So, if you feel like taking in a little bit of old flavor, stop on in. You may even catch a cruise night on Tuesday.

As I was driving past this landmark of a restaurant yesterday, my memories of my last trip there still stand out, despite the fact that it was months ago. Now I must mention that as a teenager, I spent many, many nights eating there and the place will always hold a fond memory for me. But that was then..... So to say I have had better burgers at a bowling alley is not a lie. I don't know what happened but the hot dog, cheeseburger and fries I ordered were all crappy and if I ever stop by again, it will be for a Root Beer Float only.

    (2)

Great burgers for a great price! Even better Root beer, and root beer floats! I love that you can pull up in your car flash your lights and they will come out and serve you on this nifty window try! Really neat place!

I have no idea why people are rating this place 2-3 stars when this place is downright good...but hey, that's just me. Last time I went to A&W was back in the Summer and I went there often with my folks. Despite the horrible traffic of Smithfield, it didn't change my cravings and good thing they didn't. I ordered a chili cheese dog with onion rings, chili cheese fries, and a root beer float. That was the best damn Root Beer float and chili cheese fries I've ever had. You just can't beat the classic A&W Root Beer, you just can't. Not to mention at the time there was an Auto Show going on right on the property so I had not only a delicious meal but a sneak peak at some pretty sweet 40's/50's rides! Atleast my experience expectations were met. As an honest critic, I'm giving this baby 5 stars reguardless.

I love this place based on the good memories i have of it as a child, but as an adult the food isn't all that great. The root beer is a true delight most of the time. Occasionally it is somewhat flat. I have a friend who swears by the clams here, but the price to portion ratio is a little skewed. Also i think that some fast food restaurants make better burgers than A & W. Despite this i keep going because its a fun experience, and a R.I staple (in my head at least).

  • Alex T.

Went here after hearing about it from a friend. Waited a long time for service and my food, despite only being 2nd in line. Burger was somewhat mediocre, fries were okay but a very tiny portion, and my root beer was flat. It was all way overpriced as well. I wished I had opted for fast food elsewhere as it would have been cheaper and tasted better.

A&W is a classic unfortunately the food is mediocre. The food here has always been only okay nothing special. It is the establishment itself that is worth the trip. It was a beautiful warm spring day and we were hungry and wanted to eat outside. We headed to the hell that is Greenville. The traffic in this town is dreadful. We got to A&W and decided to eat at one of the picnic table that are set up outside. There is car hop service but we voted against eating in the car as it was so nice out. The burgers were so so and the milk shake was okay. The experience was fun though. I would do it again sometime; not soon but I would do it again.

I took my family here so that my boys could experience the good old fashioned car-hop theme. Not only was the service terrible, the workers were rude, they messed up our order, they did not give the kids meals their ''special treats'' and after sitting in our car for the window service we had to get out and order our self. We asked them to bring the food to the car so the boys would see the cool window trays and NOPE the rude worker gave us our order in a bag. We then asked if we could have a trey at the window and he walked off completely ignoring us. We had to get out of the car and ask for it. To top off the rest of the problems our hot dogs had onions on them after we specifically ordered them without due to an onion allergy. To NO surprise they seriously scrapped the top layer off and gave them back to us leaving several onions on the hot dogs. What a shame this place was. The food was awful I think the hot dog bun seriously came from Stop and Shop along with all the other food they were serving. The A&W was not even good; tasted sort of flat. Much better off just buying it from the store. I will never ever return to this A&W. What a shame to have this shop giving a bad name to A&W and the "car hop" service. No wonder this company is on Groupon and living social trying to get customers. Let me tell you not worth the half price they are offering. We tried to use our Groupon when we went there and even though it states "ready to use" they would not except it for 7 days after purchase.

I just wish they were open year round. This is where I get my favorite burgers! I just don't like the rootbeer, for some reason it's always flat. But everything else is awesome.

I had not been to A&W in a while and last Sunday was the perfect day for a drive. Pulled in to the parking lot and turned the lights on to have a very pleasant young girl waited on us. The Rootbeer was so refreshing, like back in the day. Cheeseburger and fries were just like I remembered them.....delicious!!! The prices were reasonable too. My next visit will be in a week or so when I head that way to go Apple picking.

Blehh. Stopped here on the way back from a park in CT and I wish I didn't. What a waste of money. Supposedly they are supposed to come out to your car and take your order like the good ol' days, they did not, so we got out of our car and ordered and then ate at one of the picnic tables. The food was actually kinda gross. Total waste of time and money.

I wanted to like this place, it has so many kitschy, 1950's touches that the stars earned are for those and those alone. Located near Smithfield Commons on Rte. 5, this a is the classic American drive-up. There is a sign reading "Flash lights for service", and the A&W chicas will actually run out to your car. There is a two boothed order counter, a series of picnic tables, and a "Ring the bell of the service is swell!" cowbell. The service was pretty good. Unfortunatley, the food was pretty shitty. When you go to a place like this, you know what you want. It fell short. On this glorious, early-summer-feeling Saturday, me and the fam trekked it out to this place. The missus is a Rhode Islander, and has fond memories of the joint, and it sounded pretty cool, so we went. First flaw, cash only. Now, I have seen modernized A&W's all over the country, and they are Root Beer robber barons, so get a fucking card machine. So, we went and got cash, lost our place in a monster line and then the sun started to hide. But we wnet back, got a table and waited for the grub. Tons of Rhode Island people watching: some bikers, some hicks, some Gino's with their skanks, some obese aunts eating fried foods with their balooning nieces, you know what I mean. We got burgers, onion rings and root beers, and a kiddie chicken finger and fries for the lil' man. His food was good, the fries were bomb. My burger was a Jr. Whopper with stale bread and no condiments. It was also $6 dollars. The onion rings (up-sized, mind you) had only 4 rings total! Fuck me, that was weak. Her burger was identical. So, for $20 or so, we got $5 worth of worse than Burger King value menu food. Ehhh, disappointing. The root beer was tasty. The ambiance is pretty cool, except that while this was once probably a by-the-side-of-the-road place, it is now an in-the-middle-of-a- parking-lot place by a dry cleaners, optometrist and law office or some shit. Good for sentimental kitsch, but stick to a root beer float

Had a groupon and decided to go. Have not been to an A&W since the 1970's. The workers were very friendly, they do serve u in while you wait your car, or you can sit on some picnic tables. Our group was five just to crowded in a car to eat we picked the tables. Food was OK, nothing great, had double cheese burger with onion rings and of course a Root beer, and they still serve them in a frosty mug. yumma For the old time service and the great root beer you have to stop by with the family, kids will enjoy ...

I'm giving it two stars because the drink was good, but seriously way overpriced and they don't accept debit or credit cards.

I really like this A & W. The root beer is made fresh here daily. I love the weiners, onion rings and cheese curds here. Great place for fast food.

A little bit of nostalgia in Smithfield, service right to your window when you pull up, can't beat the Rootbeer!
