We ordered 2 lunch special takeouts - Chicken Curry (we asked for extra spicy). It comes with the best rice, two chutneys (green and red) and tamarind sauce. chicken curry : So good! Argh it was delicious. Whyyyyyyy. rice: Cooked perfectly...I didn't get how it tasted so good just by itself! Long grain non sticky yummy rice. I ate some of it plain just because the texture was so good, and the awesome aftertaste can only be described as eating a coconut's ghost. Perfect for the spicy curry. red chutney: Try eating this with their rice just to understand its awesomeness. green chutney: It's oniony and goes so well with everything else. tamarind sauce: I liked it! Sweet & Sour. We used very little of it because it makes things less spicy (we like eating spicy food!).

I've never been to an Indian restaurant before, and Taste of India did not disappoint. I went with a group of four on a Saturday at 6pm and the place was empty, which was a little surprising to me, but the place filled up during our meal. I tried their red sangria, which was average. I also had a key lime martini, which was much less sweet than the typical key lime martini, and I enjoyed it. I also found their drink prices to be reasonable. For dinner we all tried a different type of chicken. My friends had chicken tikka masala and chicken vindaloo, and they both cleaned their plates. My fiancé, who is sometimes nervous to try something new, loved his chicken curry. I got the chicken madras, which was definitely as hot as advertised. I was the only person who had leftovers. Service was average. There were multiple people stopping by to collect plates, who would send someone else over to take our drink orders, and then someone else would come over to bring us more rice. While a couple of the people were very personable, some were much less so, and the constant change in who was helping our table made the experience a little disjointed. I would call this place 3.5 stars... I would go again if I was in the area, but would be more likely to try somewhere else. I just can't put it on par with some of the other 4 star reviews I have on here.

This was the place that introduced me to Indian food back in the 90's before I moved to CA. I stopped in yesterday for the first time in 15-20 years. We arrived at the tail end of the lunch buffet hours. After a quick scan of what was remaining there, we decided to order from the menu. On the upside, the chicken samosa and nan were pretty tasty. They weren't over the top excellent or anything, but they did hit the spot. I ordered the chicken masala and asked for it 3 of 4 star spicy. It was okay and certainly had a snap to it, but it was more that it was very spicy hot than flavorful. The rice was a bit dry and sparse considering we ordered two full meals. I'm probably a bit spoiled after the outstanding Indian food I came across out west and the new outstanding spot in southern RI - but Taste of India wasn't the fantastic experience I had remembered from back in the day. The waiters were friendly and somewhat helpful but also a little slow and less than attentive for a nearly empty restaurant. It was also pretty expensive considering the amount of food we had. I would consider going again, but would need to re-think my choice of entree.

I had recently graduated college and one of my oldest and closest friends suggested we try something new. As educated men of the world, we were open to fresh ideas, wanted to court women who were not 100% Italian (as was the case growing up in our home town) and had desires for forbidden treasures of the palette that only an exotic array of curries could unlock. Taste of India would be my first and boyyo, was she ever gentle. Eager to dig in and experience all of the subcontinent's glory, we both ordered the NON-vegetarian thali - an assortment of tandoored (my spell check has informed me that is not a verb) meats, some spiced veg, fluffy, aromatic basmati and gloriously soft and chewy naan. This meal was the most gratifying and stimulating occurrence that I had experienced in my still-burgeoning adult life. The next day I felt a bit ashamed, almost as if I had been used. I soon realized that my favorite part of the meal did not include the meat. That day while at work, I officially broke things off with my former lover (and her sins of flesh) and bought an enormous bag of rice "from the foothills of the Himalyas". I decided right then to entirely give up the consumption of animals and wished never to look back. When I broke the news to my oldish-school family, they nearly wept. "Can you still eat duhmayduhz?" - that was twelve and a half years ago. In the year 2014 there is not a month that goes by that I do not find myself longing for the soft caresses of ToI. I often find myself on Wickenden, where I am satiated by her luncheon buffet - many times eagerly arriving before the steam tables have even been filled with the day's delectables. I find excuses to hold "business meetings" over papri chat and pakoras (that I drench in the out-of-this-world tamarind chutney which causes them to jubilantly burst in my mouth with only the slightest amount of dental pressure). Truly, the most intoxicating part of our affair can arrive hours after we have gone our separate ways. Her essence, it stays with me and reminds me of our dance. It reassures passersby that I have an inextinguishable longing that only her vindaloo can satisfy. My subsequent journeys have brought me all over North America on a quest. I've slayed my fair share (of buffets) from New Orleans to Montreal, but have never forgotten my first.

Moved to RI from Cincinnati--immediately needed to find a new Indian spot. I've tried 6 or so locations and this one hits the spot/is now my go to. All my friends I bring love it too. I always get saag paneer and this place makes the best IMO. Yummy samosas too! Service is attentive, but the the servers seem pretty indifferent about life and service haha--that's ok though. When I go I mean business and if food is brought to me sans smiles I'm ok with it.

Go to Kabob and Curry on Thayer. This place needs to improve on both their interior and service. Food is alright. The fake lamps gotta go. Dust the place a little bit.... or a lot. Get rid of the Greek water cups. But really though RIP FAKE LAMPS.

Meh. I always loves me some Indian cuisine, so I stop here when I'm in the area, but otherwise I don't go out of my way. I find the food to be under-seasoned and a bit bland. And the sauces all seem kind of thin. Also, the bathroom is gross, which isn't reassuring. But the service is always good!

This place has both vegetarian and non vegetarian foods and seems to fail at making both. Even the samosas are not good.

I recently ordered mutton (goat) biriyani and requested it to be prepared spicy. Unfortunately their version of spicy was all about sprinkling more red chilli powder into an already disoriented masala dish. Goat was prepared well, but the biryani was essentially a vegetable pulav mixed with goat gravy and in our case sprinkled with more red chillis. I would recommend ordering what the chef has to offer, requesting any variations would potentially result in an ordinary dish. Range of taste here is only as wide as wickenden street during winters.

The bathroom was dirtier than a Gas Station bathroom. Doesn't make me feel the kitchen would be any cleaner. Seriously looked as though they hadn't mopped in months if that's possible. Dust and dirt on everything... Disgusting!!!!

Taste of India is my friend's favorite Indian restaurant in Providence. My picks usually go to Kebob & Curry or Rasoi, but on a recent evening I decided to give in and join my friend at her choice spot. I must say, Taste of India lived up to her recommendation. The papri chat we ordered as an appetizer was perhaps the best I've had. It was really delicious and a very generous portion. We also tried the fried momo dumplings, which were tasty and something different (not Indian, but Nepalese instead). My standby choice for entree is usually chicken tikka masala, and the one at Taste of India was definitely satisfying, as was the naan. In the future, I would happily revisit Taste of India. I'm not sure it will take over as my favorite India spot in town, but it high up on the list and has won its way into my heart and stomach!

I cannot believe it took me all these years to try this restaurant. Went there for the first time tonight. Food and service was great.... Loved the mulligatawny soup. Ordered the Mixed grill. Absolutely delicious, lovely sauce and way too much food. Very authentic Indian. So look forward to returning.

This is my favorite place to get Indian food in Providence! Their chicken tikka masala is so perfect. The portion is big enough for two meals for me so I always bring a container to bring the rest home. The nan is always fluffy and fresh. I also love the vegetarian appetizer platter. It's always so delicious. I like that Taste of India is always on Groupon. The staff is moderately friendly. I have never ordered drinks here because the bar is not very legitimate, if you have been there you will know what I mean. I am able to completely look past those two issues because the food is fantastic.

At one point in the past the lunch buffet might have been good. I have the misfortune to stop for lunch here today. Looks like they setup the buffet with what customers forgot to take home last night. Two types of chicken, three veggies. I sampled a bite of everything. Some dishes taste burn, some dry, some old, and a couple all three. If you don't want to over eat at a buffet, this is your place. I barely ate anything. The water was pretty good tho. I had a taste of this place all right. I'm never coming back.

The service was great, we were greeted by friendly staff, seated right away, ordering was service was really good. Food was a mix of good and bad, the appetizers (chicken samosa) was good but the entree was disappointing. Ordered the Shrmp vegetable and butter chicken and both turned out to be so-so.. I would definitely recommend staying away from the Shrimp Vegetable.

I've been here a few times, and while it's not our first pick in the city for Indian food, it's still definitely tasty. I love that they give you papadam along with three sauces/toppings when you sit down. It's nice to nibble on while you look through the extensive menu. The most recent visit the bf and I both decided to go for variety, me with the vegetarian thali, him with the non-vegetarian thali. Both come with soup, naan or chapati, rice, a set appetizer, entrees sampler, and rice pudding. Some things were very good, some were just okay. We both had naan, which were big, puffy pieces. I went with the Mulligatawny soup, a puree of lentils, vegetables and herb--a little thin but very flavorful. He tried the Coconut soup which was just okay. The shredded coconut tasted like the sweetened kind which gave the soup a bit of an odd flavor. The Vegetarian Thali came with a pakora (which was definitely over-fried) and a vegetable samosa, chana masala and palak paneer--all of which were good. The chana masala had tons of chickpeas, and the palak was very flavorful. My main complaint was there wasn't enough paneer in the palak paneer; but that's an issue I have at pretty much all Indian restaurants (what can I say, I love paneer). The Non-Vegetarian Thali had a piece of bone in Tandoori chicken for an appetizer, lamb curry, and chicken Zalfrezi. I tried the lamb which was extra tender and tasted like it had been simmered for hours. BF said the rest was good, but not his usual Indian food order so it was hard to be able to compare it in terms of where we normally go. Finally, the rice pudding was also a little thin for my taste, but wasn't overly sweet and had a hint of (maybe) cinnamon. Not the texture I was expecting, but I liked it regardless. This was plenty of food for leftoversI'm sure we'll be back at some point, and the naan and palak paneer I'd definitely consider getting.

This was my introduction to Indian food so I'm sure I may be a bit biased, but we love Taste of India. We started eating here when they were still located across the street, before they moved to their current location, which was Taj Mahal a long time ago. Pretty standard Indian menu, the breads are really good and the vindaloo is served HOT as you want it. My wife loves the eggplant dish, bengan bhartha, which is a veggie dish. There are many gluten free and veggie dishes offered, and this is the only place I order vegetarian meals from. We'll be back.

The Place Was Cold, The place was Not busy the waiters wouldn't let us sit where we wanted to, The Food Was All Red Colored and didn't have a taste. the appetizer was all deep fried, chicken and shrimp was dry no taste, In my Opinion Go To India The Restaurant On Hope St Is The Best Around With a Very nice atmosphere. Thank You Taste Of India For Taste Of Gas I got From You. Fast Food Crap.

I love "Indian food" and have eaten it in many and various places around the country and the globe, including Pakistan and in the homes of Indians and Pakistanis. Taste of India started at this location about thirty years ago as Taj Mahal. I've been a patron through changes of name, location, and management. The food now is as good or better than it's ever been. As a vegetarian, there are many choices on the menu that I've not personally tried. But having dined there with many omnivores, I'm confident that their experience mirrors my own. I can't say unequivocally that this is the very best Indian food in or near Providence because there is one contender I've yet to try. I keep putting it off because when I yearn for khaanaa, I come to Taste of India where I know I'll be satisfied.

We enjoy this establishment. The decor has brightened up over the years and it is quite nice for a small space. The family enjoys the nan bread with mango chutney, chicken jalfrezi, chicken korma, chicken biryani...we like chicken. The entrees come with basmati rice which I enjoy because it doesn't come loaded with peas as some Indian restaurants serve it. They now have a liquor license which they didn't used to have which is convenient. We also enjoy the mulligatawny soup and the papri chaat. A great way to end the meal, if you have room, is with some indian tea and some kheer...rice pudding. The only reason for the 4 stars is all the work being done on the roads by the city and tough parking.

Worse Indian i've ever had...and I love Indian food! Extremely dry/overcooked chicken dishes with half-raw rice. Nan had barely any taste and very thin. And worse of all, the curry in all dishes were very weak, way too diluted. Can't believe I paid $13 for this.

This has become my goto place for Indian food after moving back to RI. I was very lucky to live in Cambridge, MA for many years and enjoy some of the best indian restaurants around. The Taste of India is delicious, and without asking always hits the nail on the head with spice level. I would say that I do take out from here almost once every 2 weeks, our orders are correct and ready on time. The food is pricy but the portions are more than enough for one person, but not enough for two. I suggest ordering at least one dish per person. The Naan is excellant, and so are their samosas. If your someone that love indian like me or someone thats new to the cuisine, there are many options for you!

I have been to Taste of India between 5-10 times. Even though the food is not great, I somehow find myself back here. There is nothing wrong with it, but it's not all that special. I most recently got their lunch buffet with a group of people. The food was good for buffet food with some variety of options. I think I prefer to not have their lunch buffet though.

Very nice. Nice waiters, decent service, decent food. Decent everything. Nothing to write home about, and the Biryani was not anything compared to India on Hope St. in Pawtucket, but there was nothing to take points away from this place.

I came here for the first time today and saw that they have a buffet lunch. It included papri chat, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, chana masala, naan, and some other dishes. It was delicious! I would definitely go back again for this lunch buffet, and also sometime at dinner to try one of their entrees.

I do not think I have been to the restaurant [yet] but had the absolute best samosas I have had around here at Water Fire Saturday night. They were perfection. Now I definitely will go to the restaurant.

My friend and I stopped in for dinner yesterday. Cute décor, good service. We tried the veggie samosas, veg tiki, paneer appetizer, tandoori shrimp, chicken tikka masala, and garlic cilantro nan. Overall the food was good. The masala needs something, just a little more flavor, and more chicken. I may try the butter chicken, as it is similar to masala sauce. We liked the brown sauce in the condiment tray. The green was a bit spicy, when it is a bit cooler at other places. I ordered a pineapple juice, which was dark yellow and brownish and did not taste good, no idea where it came from since even Dole juice out of the can is not bad. I sent it back. I noticed it was still on the bill, but he did not charge for the less expensive sprite I replaced it with. A minor price difference, but when you are serving icky juice, you take it off the bill, period. It was absolutely not real pineapple juice and if that is what you advertise, that is what you serve. I may come again but I do prefer the masala sauce at rasoi and I think you can get brown rice there too. This was an alright stop though.

It is ok. That is all I really have to say about Taste of India. I went there recently and the first thing I will say is the staff is helpful. Beautifully so. The naan is pretty decent as well. This said I might have been spoiled. I went to other Indian food restaurants before moving to Rhode Island (I.e. the authenticity in India, the great tastes in the UK, some places in Atlanta, San Francisco, New York, etc.) and that might have clouded my judgement just a little bit. You see, when I order a lamb dish...for the price I just paid here I usually get enough to feed two people (and in one glorious place in Atlanta each dish serves four for a couple of dollars more). Here, you get enough for one. One person. Plenty of rice for four. Two separate lamb dishes...just enough for one. Fail. However, going by taste of the two dishes I ordered (which would have changed the mark), the Boti Masala and the lamb curry. It was ok. That is it. Ok. Not spectacular...not great...but not bad...just OK. All in all, I do not know if I would return especially based off of the other yelp reviews around of other Indian places and I will have to check them out before I give my final opinion, but as it looks now Taste of India is simply missing the mark(meat) that could bump it over.

Well, as you can see all of these reviews seem to be a hit or a miss. In my experience it was quite a home run. I'm not necessarily an Indian food connoisseur, but I do enjoy it and I definitely enjoyed our food and experience here. First, the interior is just about as cute as it can get. A small restaurant, but not necessarily cozy. The waitstaff was perfectly pleasant as well. Secondly, and most importantly: the food. My friend and I ordered the chicken samosas and the vegetarian sampler appetizer and both were great. Mostly fried bits and pieces, but the dipping sauces enhanced it greatly. For entree I ordered the chicken curry and it too was delicious. Returning in the future I will most likely just order a couple appetizers as a meal, since they are quite filling and decently priced. All in all, if you are around the Fox Point area and looking to try something new, give The Taste of India a try!

Good decent food. Nothing great. Standard Indian fare. Pretty good ambience too. The goan curry we had was Ok. The naan and roti were fine. If you are looking for some decent indian food, this should be fine.

I really love that A Taste of India has each of their vegan items labeled as such. I cannot tell you how helpful that is when ordering (other restaurants take note!). Their vegetable samosas are absolutely delicious! They might be the best vegetable samosas I've ever had- and I've eaten a lot of vegetable samosas! Their mulligatawny soup is just good, not great, not bad, just good. I also had their Sabzi Kohlapuri (Vegetable curry) which was very very good. My wife and I shared everything and it was more than enough. The entree also came with ample basmati rice (they definitely don't skimp on portion size). The atmosphere is lovely as well. We'll be going back to A Taste of India very soon.

I'm not sure if it was just on that day when we went there (04/12/2014) or always so, but our experience was not that good or memorable. First, there is no parking at all. We parked our car nearly two streets away and it was a 10 minutes walk. When we entered we were greeted. But it is the food we were not satisfied about. There were 10 (ten) food items and only two among them were non-veg (chicken). The roti (naan) was very dry and was like chewing raw beef. The "paapdi chat" was not good compared to what I use to have in India, but still a nice try. The three items for which I would give 5 stars - "pakoda", "butter chicken" and "rice pudding (dessert)". The white rice (basmati rice) was not that well cooked. The secret and the perfect consistency for a great basmati rice is, it should not be too much cooked else it will turn pastry-like and at the same time, it should be cooked enough to retain the aroma. This was missing. Compared to the restaurant "Deep Indian Restaurant" in Providence that we went a week back, I didn't find this as good.

Run away as fast as you can!!!! Terrible service, filthy -- I mean FILTHY surroundings. Dirty cutlery, dirty plates, filthy floor and FILTHY restrooms. It makes the food positively scary.

I have 1 word for you: buffet But now I will write more words- the buffet is great and perfect for lunch. The chicken entree offered each day rotates so call and ask what they're offering if you've really got your mind fixed on a certain curry. They also always offer a vegetarian entree along with the chicken. Thos efried veggie fritters whose real name is escaping me are one of my favorites and after sampling the Indian food at both Kabob & Curry and India- this is the best Indian option for Providence, especially the eastside. Only negative the bathroom is a lil gross. Just a lil.

I've been meaning to try Taste of India for a while now. Finally made it on a Friday evening for take out. The dining room was simple when I stepped in to pick it up. No hostess stand when you come in, so another group and I stood awkwardly in the doorway until the waitstaff could help us. At 7:30pm on a Friday night, the tables were only about half full. I was hoping this was not a bad sign. I had the baigan bhartha and my BF had the lamb boti masala. We shared the keema naan. The BFs lamb was tasty as I dipped my bread into it -- he seemed really pleased. My baigan bhartha was just okay. Defintely not bad, but not the best I've had. This is among my favorite Indian dishes. Both came with rice, again....just okay. I prefer the spiced rices that other spots offer. The service was friendly. I would go back as a take-out spot, but for eat-in Providence offers better options. Next time I need to try the dal. That's what I've heard so many that others have talked about.

Similar to Pakarang, although I wouldn't say Taste of India is an authentic Indian restaurant, it's better than the one on Thayer st. Their serving is pretty big so I would recommend on going when you are hungry! Their curries are okay and also the kabob is pretty nice as well! However, because I've tried so many other good Indian restaurant places in other countries as well (i.e. Korea), I can't say that Taste of India is a top-notch quality. But since Providence is limited in terms of choice, I would go for here than the one on Thayer if you are craving for some Indian food!

I've been here a few times before and always get a great meal. During my most recent visit, I went during the lunch buffet but wasn't impressed with the selection so I ordered off the regular menu instead. The food was fantastic and there was enough for me to take leftovers home. I also ordered a pitcher of sangria which came out in a very small pitcher (as opposed to the ones I get at other restaurants) and it tasted very bland, we drank it, but weren't impressed. I'll definitely go back but skip the sangria.

I feel a little baldy giving Taste of India three stars because the service was excellent and the food was tasty - it just was't four-stars wonderful. So, three stars it is. I was surprised by how packed this place was on a Monday night - nearly every table was filled! The one waiter did an amazing job of greeting, taking orders and keeping tabs on tables, and he was so super-friendly and sweet, if I could I would give him five stars just for being so adorable. However, my Chicken Tikka Masala was mostly sauce, which is disappointing, to say the least. The Black Dahl was good, but there was nothing very special about it. We also ordered the Chicken Momo, which I was very excited about - you rarely see this Himalayan treat on a menu! So, we ordered a plate of those, and when they took a while, we were given a complimentary plate of fried veggie pancakes that were pretty delicious. When the momo finally arrived, it was a HUGE portion, and while they were really good, some of te dough seemed a little underdone. We cleared the plate, and remarked on how huge the serving was. Then, the bill came. It was totally reasonable, but they had charged us for a double order of the momo. We would have been happy to split a single order, but they brought us two. Whatever - we paid the tab and were on our way in no time. I would be happy to come here again, but I can't say it's the best Indian food in Providence. The service is great, the location is great and the bar menu is great (cocktails, wine and beer), but I wasn't blown away.

I wanted to love Taste of India and I do like it a lot. I have never eaten there always done take out so I want to preface it with that. I am only judging the food. Though they are not always very friendly when I pick up. I have tried the Chicken Pakora and was not impressed, the batter fell off and I got almost empty sauces which worried me a bit. The Chicken Momo on the other hand I adore. I love the spiciness of it and the tomato based sauce to dip it in. The naan while a good flavor has always been soggy. Some of this could be the take out. My fav dish is Chicken Saag and the regular is OK. However I do enjoy the Chicken Tikki Saag, nice twist and flavor to Chicken Saag. I continue to go back and will.

The atmosphere is warm and modern, the service is excellent, they have a great selection of Indian specialties to choose from, several Indian beers to try, and the servers are friendly. I had the chicken tandoori which was cooked perfectly and had a great sauce along side, nice basmati rice and crisp vegetables. The prices were reasonable and the portions big so I can enjoy again the next day at home. They also serve many vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes, so if you like Indian food you are sure to find something you will like. I have been here before and plan on coming back again.

I took my Mom and sister here for lunch one day and loved it so much that I took my husband here for dinner a few days later. Very good food, great service, and warm atmosphere. The flavors are very rich and delightful. As soon as you sit down, they bring you yummy treats to taste (crunchy thin/pancake-like items with a few unique sauces to try). Very good experience.

Just left about 1/2 hour ago. Bad, Bad Indian food. YUCK. My dish was Aloo Gabi, was burned, or just cooked in old gross oil. My husbands Cocoanut dish was mediocre at best- I sent my dish back, and we could hear the only women working there yelling from the kitchen, then she came out to our table and told us that "No it was not burned, it must have been the spices" Come On! The Spices? I have had the dish many times, and I know what burned tastes like. Very awkward. They didn't close for another 1/2 hour, and they sprayed down a table that was inches away from us while we were eating... Thanks. Overall... Terrible experience. Would never go back. Over priced because its on the college "strip" too. I would avoid this place. Best of luck if you decide to eat there.

I've enjoyed everything I have had at Taste of India, although it's not the very best Indian I've had. I have only eaten dinner and gotten take-out, so I can't speak to the lunch buffet - based on other reviews the buffet may be more problematic (perhaps they deserve seperate rankings!). Service-wise, the restaurant isn't ever packed so service is prompt and the food comes out quickly. The thing that keeps me coming back to Taste of India is that the menu has icons for 'vegan' and 'gluten-free' entrees, which I really appreciate. FYI, they serve alcohol now so don't bring your own!

So very disappointed. Thought we were meeting at India restaurant on Hope Street which is fantastic in food service and entertainment but my friend decided on taste of india on w ickenden street and what a difference. Bad food, unfriendly service and rushed out of the restaurant even though there was no one there but us! How rude!. Will never ever go back. Taste of India on Wickenden street could learn a lot from india on Hope street.

I had the fish curry and it was good, but nothing special. The decor is nice, but the service is a little snooty. I wouldn't recommend going here if you don't know much about Indian cuisine because the service with just laugh at you....I felt like a "dumb American." I might go back and try the lunch buffet because it seems like a good deal, but I probably will not return for dinner....it wasn't worth the price.

I truly enjoyed our visit here. I am not sure why this restaurant only has 3 stars. The ambiance is nice, the servers were overly friendly and played with my son for quite some time. As the title states, it is all in the taste. The seasonings were excellent, and the flavor of the lamb boti masala haunts me in my dreams and I awake craving some-- The portions are not extremely overwhelming, but with roti, an appetizer (veg. momo), the lamb entree, and the dessert my friend, son, and I were pleasantly satisfied and not overstuffed. The prices are a bit high for entrees, and the staff forgot to give us the menus, but everything else was great. Good job!

I went here recently with my roommate for lunch and it was a very delicious lunch. I love Indian Food and I found it shocking that I had not been here before.. or of an age that I remember. My Indian food loving parents could have taken me here when I was little, but not so that I remember. Because believe me I WOULD remember. First off, you always have to get a mango lassi when you go out for Indian and man was this a delicious lassi. I drank it so quickly and probably, didn't leave as much room for lunch. The lunch buffet didn't look very appetizing so we stuck with the lunch menu, which had cheap and decent sized portions which was a major plus. Next I tried new! Mulligatawny stew which was a lovely soup of lentils and indian spices. It didn't blow me away or anything, but it was good. Finally however came the saag paneer, my FAVORITE Indian dish. It was very rich and creamy, but sooo soo good! I wanted to eat all of it, but I was stuffed! Our waitress seemed nice, not overly friendly, which I like. It was pretty empty however and the bathroom was very dirty. Putting that a side, the food was great! I would love to go back again.

We had their foor from the booth in downtown Providence, at WaterFire. We have their cuisine every time we're at WaterFire. We have had consistently good food at fair prices, and kind, courteous service. I totally love Indian food and this booth delivers. Thank you, Taste of India. We will dine with you next time we're in town, again.

As a student, this was my favorite restaurant within walking distance from Brown's campus. I preferred it over Kabob and Curry on Thayer, but in part it helped that Taste of India tended to be less crowded than the former. The food was always great; their mango lamb was my go to dish. Great selection of appetizers as well. So why the three stars? I recently returned to Providence (Nov. 2012), and decided to go to my once favorite restaurant, but unfortunately the quality seemed to have gone down. Maybe it was just a bad day for the staff, but it took the waiter a considerable amount of time to take our order, even though it was not a busy evening at the moment. When we finally did get our food, it was cold. The mango lamb was certainly not as I remembered it. However, the appetizers were good and the only positive of our dinner.

My wife and I went to Taste of India for the first time last night and loved it! I used a Living Social coupon, which prompted our first visit. The service was very good, attentive but not overly attentive, and very friendly. My wife really liked the interior decor, especially for such a small place on Wickenden St. We started with vegetable samosas, which were fantastic, I could eat those things every day! My wife ordered the Chicken Tikka Saag, which didn't look like the most appetizing meal but tasted absolutely amazing. In my efforts to start eating a vegan diet, I ordered the Sabzi Kohlapuri, which is a vegetable curry, and it was also great - very flavorful and not overly spiced. One large plate of rice was served for us to share, and we also ordered nan bread. The portions were generous and we definitely ate our fill! Can't wait to go back to try another dish, and introduce my kids to real Indian food!

Taste of India is within walking distance of my home, so we strolled on over around 9 PM, which is kind of late for a girl who goes to bed around that time on a normal day! Known for fairly Indian authentic food (when compared to other area restaurants), Taste of India is located on Wickenden Street, a fun and funky street lined with many restaurants and shops which are always fun to browse around in. Thus the walk was pleasant to say the least! As in most Indian restaurants around town, we started with the complimentary lentil crackers called pappadum. Crispy and peppery, they were wonderful and quite abundant! The pappadums were served with the usual trio of mint, tamarind and onion chutneys! I doctored mine up with the tamarind sauce, which I literally would bathe in if given the chance, as well as the onion relish and mint chutney. The crackers are the picture of perfection when dressed in all 3 condiments for sure- you gotta make sure every crunch contains all three sauces, don't ya know? The table also ordered this epic papri chaat, or Indian nachos with chickpeas, crispy wafers, yogurt, tamarind sauce, potatoes and more! I love papri chaat dearly, but refrained from indulging due to the yogurt and wheat crackers. Darn. We also had some complimentary naan brought to the table. Again, I held off on the naan, but it was amazingly fluffy! For my entree, I ordered their mixed vegetable curry, which was quite tasty. I love how colorful it is, and I especially doted on the huge chunks of cauliflower present throughout the dish. I ate about half of this alongside a hearty portion of saffron rice! I was so into my entree that I forgot for a second we had ordered another appetizer that never arrived. We reminded the waiter, who graciously brought the order of vegetable pakoras, or fritters in chickpea batter, on the house. I definitely housed two of these deep-fried balls of goodness! I am Indian, which means there is high potential to OD on Indian food, especially since my mom is such a great cook. However, I promise you I could eat Indian food everyday and not get tired of it. There are so many variations of dishes based on region and spices utilized that you could eat something everyday for a very, very long time. Going to different Indian restaurants is so enjoyable for me, as I get to eat my favorite dishes frequently while appreciating the individual restaurant's spin on them that make them taste different restaurant to restaurant.

I liked the taste of india.....Very clean......buffet was good.....plenty to choose from: Pankoras, nan, chicken tandori, mixed vegetables etc...........I was impressed.....and the waitress (her name was shitu) was very nice..... Taste of India gave me the 10% discount for mentioning Yelp......

Groupon users beware! I tried using a Groupon ($15 for $30) that I had purchased a few months ago (still well within the expiration date) and was told that the voucher would only be honored if we spent $45. This was NOT a part of terms set out when I originally purchased the groupon. Only after arguing with the waiter (something you never want to do before the food is served to you) and stating that my party was willing to leave otherwise was the original voucher honored. Don't let them swindle you. As for the food itself, it was fine but was nothing to write home about. Palak paneer was good but lacking in amount of paneer. Had I payed full price I would have been disappointed. I won't be going back since the prices are high for what you get ($12 for a dinner dish) and they seemed more than willing to act underhanded toward a customer.

This was the 3rd of the Indian restaurants we went to this weekend (other two being Gourmet India and Bombay Club) and found this to be average. Their service was just off and the girl just had a smirk on her face throughout. The other man was just sarcastic every time asked a simple question. We ordered vegetarian biryani - which was too spicy, paneer kulcha - which didn't have much paneer in it, bhindi (okra) - which was decent, gulab jamun - which was stale, and some raita - which was the only good thing here! They also have all those stupid minimum order per person charges as well as sharing charges!!

I really enjoy Taste of India. I am not sure why others have been so critical of the establishment, * Food is reasonably priced, and the quality is fine. * The layout is very cozy. * Location easily accessible from the highway. * Parking never is a problem. - My only criticism is the portions which should be larger.

    (4)
  • Olivia U.

It wasn't bad. It wasn't great. I don't even remember what I ordered. Some kind of veggie curry? Eh. The service was good, and while it wasn't too expensive I'd really rather just pay more for Kabob & Curry.

I for one think that the $10 lunch buffet is quite a good deal. I mean, where else can you eat as much good food as you want? And by good, I mean not the processed, canned/frozen food at buffets like HomeTown or Country Buffet. It is essential however to go at just the right time- if you go after 1:30-2pm the pickings are slimmer, and the quality isn't as fresh. As for people commenting on the blandness of the food in general, when you order off of the menu, you can ask for it to be prepared mild, medium, or spicy. I'm pretty sure that with all of the complaints and send backs from the average American, they have decided to prepare most dishes on the mild side, to suit most Americans palates. But the portions are small compared to the price point. The service is fine- no one is very friendly, but I haven't found them to be rude either.

I've been a fan of Indian food for over 30 years, and have eaten it in the homes of Indian friends and in truly outstanding restaurants in the UK (not surprisingly, home to some of the best indian cuisine outside of India itself). I have actually had food from Taste of India at Providence's WaterFire events, and while I never thought it was terribly good, it was good enough considering the challenges of cooking huge batches of food outdoors with very limited equipment. So when I found myself near the restaurant recently, I decided to give it a try. Let me just say that the food at Taste of India does not taste of India. What it tastes of is "curry." You know, like the powder you get in the spice section at Stop & Shop... only even at that, they fail to add enough to give a flavorful experience. Everything tends to be spiced more or less the same (poorly). It's as though they are cooking to an audience that they assume knows nothing about the rich and varied cuisine of India. This is "lowest common denominator" Indian. If you want to really get a sense of the variety and sophistication of this incredible culinary culture, head up the hill to Rasoi on Hope St near the Pawtucket line. That's as good an Indian restaurant as I've been to anywhere in the world. I'm giving this two stars because the place was clean and tidy (even if the decor is non-existent), and unlike other reviewers I found the service to be adequate.

A little boofay Not the most attractive looking place, inside or out, but the boofay is pretty good. Not as many dishes as some of the larger Indian restaurants in major cities, but the food was good and the price reasonable. Not a whole lot of Indian food in Rhode island and Taste of India is convenient, quiet and the employees are very nice. A cool place for a good, cheap lunch when prowling around the area.

I don't know why it took me so long to try this place, but I'm glad I finally did. (And I'm kicking myself for lost time!) I'm vegan by choice, gluten-free by necessity, and I was thrilled with the menu here. As with several other Providence-area Indian restaurants, the gluten-free and vegan options were clearly marked on the menu, making ordering a delight. What's really nice, though, is that there were even more gluten-free and vegan choices on this menu than what I have seen at other places. On top of that, though, this is the first of the Providence-area Indian restaurants I've visited that had an actual bread option for the gluten-free eater! It was made with corn, and it was delicious. No, it's not at all like a piece of naan, but no matter! It was just nice to be able to have a piece of bread with my meal - something I've missed ever since my Celiac disease diagnosis! The prices were good. The restaurant is nice, with low lighting (but not low enough to concern you about the food) and good service. My dish was spicy, and they kept my water glass filled adequately. I had the corn bread, bhindi masala, and a cauliflower appetizer made with lentil flour rather than wheat flour. I was quite happy with my food, as was my boyfriend with his. (He had the non-vegetarian thali, and said it was very good.) I wish more restaurants had clearly marked menus like this, and had the same number of options. Until that day comes, I will be happy to return here whenever I want to eat Indian food.

Indians would be ashamed to learn that the food presented here serves as a "Taste of India". I do not consider $9 for a buffet of merely 3 curry choices worth the price. What's worse, the chicken curry was overcooked, dry and stringy, on top of being nearly flavorless. Indian foods get their spicy reputation from being, well, spicy. This curry was like eating chicken that had been boiled in a pan for two days. I'd seriously question any positive reviews of this place. I thought, perhaps, my experience may have been a statistical outlier, but realized that at least one positive review was driven by a 10% discount for mentioning Yelp - conflict of interest.

Outstanding! My dad comes here at least 3 times a week. As soon as we walk in they kno what we re gonna order. Im a huge fan of the chicken tikka with tandori sauce. If you like spicy i would recommend the curry (just tell them how hot you would like it). Service is great, food is excellent! Try it out.

Tried the vegetarian thali - came with mulligatawny soup, whole wheat roti (or nan), samosa, pakora, palak paneer, chana masala, rice and rice pudding for dessert. Good sampling & lots of food (with enough to take home). Friendly waiter and quick service.

I would be remiss to not comment on Taste of India although I have since left Providence. They have an excellent lunch buffet which includes my favorite Chicken Tikka Masala in Providence as well as delightful yogurt pudding. That's really all that needs to be said.

I had Chicken Tikka Masala which is my favorite Indian dish. The chicken was overcooked and kind of chewy. The sauce was decent and rice just ok. I probably would not go here again but might give em another shot....

This is only based off of one lunch experience. (I went here a couple times in 2008, but can't really remember that well.) The main thing preventing me from going here more often -- it's about a half mile, if that, from where I live! -- is the price. Main dishes tend to run at or above $10, even those without meat. Then add tax and tip... I guess this is pretty normal pricing (seems analogous to Kabob and Curry down the street) but that doesn't mean it's completely affordable. But. Come at lunch and you can either partake of the buffet or the lunch specials. I'll probably try the buffet soon, but today I went for the channa masala lunch special. You are served papadums with the usual condiments and water to begin. I still don't know what the green sauce is, despite its ubiquity at Indian places, but it's delicious. As it was a lunch serving, I didn't expect much of the serving size, but it was big! I actually stopped halfway through with the intention of getting a take-out box for the rest (but my eyes, nose and stomach beat the waitress and I finished it off. Very, very full now.) With tip, my bill came to $9. Given the inclusion of the small appetizer and the fact that the channa masala could/should have carried into my dinner hour, not bad. As far as the quality of the food, I'm not completely sure what to say. It wasn't terrible, it wasn't terrific. The masala wasn't super spicy (the way I usually like it) and wasn't overwhelmingly flavorful either, but it wasn't bad. I feel like this is something that's both difficult to perfect and difficult to screw up... So perhaps it's not the best single dish on which to judge their quality. Basically, not life-altering, but will take care of your Indian craving.

We were in Rhode Island, and I insisted we go for Indian food. Of course, we had to drive over half an hour to get it, but when we got to Taste of India, I was glad we did. The service was prompt and the restaurant clean and cool. We ordered an assortment of appetizers and then had the Chicken Korma and Chicken Saag. All in all, the food was pretty good. My bf had a Mango shake that has inspired him to make them at home (yum!), and I was pretty happy with the food as well. Will I go here again? Probably not. Did it satisfy my craving for Indian food? You betcha.

I went to Taste of India with a friend for a new culinary experience. We'd both had Indian food before but wanted to try new dishes. We felt extremely rushed the entire time we were there. There were only a few other parties in the restaurant so it wasn't like they were trying to turn tables as quickly as possible to get people seated. The server never asked us if we wanted drinks, we had to call her over to order tea, our appetizer came before we even had a chance to munch on the crisps they gave us when we say down, then the entrees came before we finished our appetizer. We were seated at a 2 person table and the staff just pushed everything onto the table leaving no room for anything else. The food was good but for the price we were paying we wanted to relax and enjoy our experience. Even at the end of the meal they rushed us to get boxes and took away the bill before we were done splitting the payment. If you want to get takeout here the food is good. But the service was awful and I will not go back. There are enough Indian places in Providence I can enjoy.

Really good if you need some standard, utilitarian Indian food. This place turned out better than expected. The tikka masala was one of the best I've had, the naan hot and fresh, and the chicken madras nice and spicy without knocking me out. Service was polite and efficient and the prices good, too.

I'm not going to lie, I had low expectations coming to Taste of India. I already had my favorite Indian restaurant and was unsure how Taste would live up. We were pleasantly greeted and sat at a nice table by the window, although I have to say the table was a little small for three (maybe due to our large quantities of food). The place was pretty busy but nothing that caused a wait which was nice because the place is a decent size but not big enough to have people waiting. We started with the papri chat which was very good I could have easily eaten myself into thanksgiving gluttony then I had the chicken madras which was decent but the chicken seems overly tender almost as if it was cooked in a slow cooker (not sure if that was the intention but I didn't care for that part of it). The prices are completely reasonable and when I want a break for my wallet from my beloved Rasoi this will be my stop.

I've had Indian in several major cities in the US and a few places overseas and Taste of India in Providence is by far my favorite. Everything on the menu is delicious. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the service is great (dine in or take out). The Tandoori chicken is my favorite thing on their menu, it never disappoints.

After reading everyone's reviews, I was pretty nervous to go to A.T.I. today. But my co-worker had a Groupon and we wanted to use it. For starters, someone commented and said that you can't use your Groupon unless you spend more than the coupon itself. FALSE. We called ahead and the gentleman who answered (I believe it was the manager) said that we could use it for dine-in or takeout, at any price. He even sounded concerned that we would "lose" money if we just got some lunch items and didn't use it all. We found the place clean and relaxed inside. We called ahead and our food was ready by the time we arrived to sit down (on a tight schedule!). The man we spoke with on the phone--the manager or owner, I believe--welcomed us when we arrived and also came up after and asked us how everything was, if we'd been there before, etc. and offered us a take-out menu for future ordering convenience. Everyone was very friendly. THE FOOD I ordered the Chana Masala (chickpeas) and my co-worker got the Mango Chicken Curry. Both of us were pleasantly surprised! Nice and spicy, with an "earthier" flavor and look than Rasoi (my usual). Less bright flavors, but definitely not LESS flavor. I wasn't blown away by the complexity, but the spices and desired taste were there. Both dishes came with some yummy and colorful basmati rice, served family-style for the two of us. All in all, no complaints! UPDATE This place also accommodates large groups, even though it's a small place! We reserved for 30+ people for a work lunch for the buffet, and the manager even asked if we wanted special items on the buffet. They are flexible and ready to accommodate! Upgraded from three to four stars, for sure.

Decent place. Nice service. Average prices. Good quality food. Hip location. I prefer India over this place any day of the week. I have yet to make it to every Indian restaurant in Prov, but for me, this has been a slightly better than average place. Not the best, but not the worst either.

Well may be buffet is not this restaurant's forte - but this restaurant is just plain bad from a food perspective. Went there yesterday for lunch buffet and found the choices to be extremely limited. I would have been ok with very limited choice on buffet ( like 7 items total) if the quality of each of these items were good - but the quality of food doesn't even come close to many other places that I have been to. On the positive side, the ambiance was ok and the service was alright. May be these folks are better doing dinner than doing lunch buffet. For the no. of choices that they had the $ value was definitely on the higher side - there was no "Paisa Vasool" as a typical Indian would say!

First time to this place, and it was great. The service was attentive, but not overbearing. Food was brought out quickly. We had to send a dish back (our fault for not paying attention to the ingredients- cream in a dish for someone who is lactose intolerant), and they suggested a perfect dish to substitute. They also sent out extra appetizers on the house. Everything tasted wonderful except the lentil soup which was a bit bland. Overall a great first impression.

For three years, I lived two buildings down from this restaurant, and was a regular at their Sunday buffet, and on a first name basis with some of their staff. I've also found them to be reliable, affordable and friendly caterers. That said, I haven't been there in a while, and was so excited to see that they'd remodeled the place. What was formerly a zero-ambience restaurant with gray walls, fake planters, and reliably ethnic (though tacky) wall decor, is now an adorable little saffron-colored cafe. Mango lassis are a wonderful way to start the meal, particularly when it's hot out. I swear I've never had onion chutney on papadum that tastes quite as good anywhere else. The veggie samosas are excellent- crisply fried, without being too greasy- but chewy and spicy on the inside. I am partial to the chicken pakoras- really the Indian answer to chicken tenders- but the pakora batter is just so mouthwatering. The tikka masala (the all-time favorite, according to the menu) is good- succulent chunks of chicken breast in a mildly spiced and creamy tomato gravy that just begs for you to dip your naan in it. Many flavors of naan are available- fresh and piping hot- but I think the garlic/cilantro compliments all of the flavors the best. The basmati rice is always perfectly cooked. My husband swears their tandoori chicken comes straight from heaven; it includes a generous portion with sliced onions, a wedge of lemon, and sometimes some broccoli florets or bell pepper slivers. if you're not a carnivore, try the baigan bhartha (mashed and roasted eggplant) or the chana masala (spiced chickpeas)- healthy and filling! We're pleased to see they've added vindaloo to their menu, which is not for the faint of heart (we'll have to try it the next time we're there). We also tried the house sangria- which is a solid addition to the beverage menu. All in all, kudos on the updates- I will continue to be a happy patron!

I don't get to eat Indian very often, wife hates it. I got the opportunity to visit taste of India last night. I've been there many times over, at least, 15 years. Over that time, it,s been consistently good. You're not going to last that long in business if you do 't have some skills. We had the samosas, chicken korma and chicken curry, and garlic nan (really good). I recommend it.

Good food for the price, recently was renovated, clean and nice. We went there for the buffet which had few choices of food and no pudding. Gulab jamun was not that good. Tawa chicken was tasteless. Shrimp was a disaster. Our favorites are that spicy spinach and tikka masala. We'll probably go back there again sometime.

The decor is nice. Other than that, this place blows, and I was soooooooooooo happy that I was not the one paying. For the price, you expect good service, and you expect good food. I got neither. I had to flag the server down more than just a few times for simple things like putting in my order, or fixing my order because it was cooked wrong, or getting me additional spices for the flavorless curry, etc etc etc... We had to sit an extra 20 minutes before the lady gave us the bill...then another 20 minutes before she came back with the slip, then another ten minutes before she provided change just to get her tip. Good thing I wasn't paying, because I wouldn't have left her a thing. And I probably would have taken off without paying due to sitting there a whole extra hour after the meal was done, waiting on her to take my money. I came here again with my sister, for a quick app, and the service was just as bad. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you-because I will never ever ever go back. I love indian food, but this place is a joke. And the sad thing is I didn't have to pay either time I went because everyone keeps saying it is the best indian food in providence. What a joke! I would rather drive 2 hours to connecticut to get REAL indian food than sit in this beautiful restaurant and eat their over priced, over cooked, bland "indian" cuisine. seriously, the curry tasted pretty good after I sent it back to the chef to fix...but why should I have had to do that in the first place? And I really hate the idea of sending my food back to be recooked, because you just know they are being careless with it and rushing.

I hardly ever go here for a regular off-the-menu meal, but often visit for the $6.95 lunch buffet ($7.95 on Fri-Sat). The buffet offers Tandoori Chicken, a couple vegetable dishes, a chickpea dish, a chicken dish, plain naan, and vegetable pakoras. Sometimes there is papri chaat and usually rice pudding is available as part of the buffet. The food is standard and consistent -- not too spicy, but not bland either. Water refill service is very quick and polite.

I love this place. I first came here on a recommendation from one of my Indian friends. He was spot on. This place may not look like much but it has very fast service and a buffet for lunch and the food is very good. It sits on busy Wickenden Street close to other good restaurants, but is the only Indian place in this locale. The service is friendly and very fast and attentive. The place is a hole in the wall looking like a storefront with very little seating inside and being quaint and intimate. I can see this place getting very busy and not being a place to sit, but I would highly recommend this place. The prices were moderate as well!

I had not been here in a number of years, but had read both positive and negative reviews.I was not disappointed; both the food and the service were very good. The staff is highly attentive and friendly. The choices of meals include entrees, soups, appetizers and combination meals. I had the vegetable thali which had an abundance of food that I could not finish. I'm not sure about the size of entrees, since my friend also had what I ordered. It was a very enjoyable evening. Highly recommend the Key Lime Martini. I also used a Groupon and did not have any issues or have to spend a minimum amount of money.

I feel ripped off. While in Providence, I decided I was in the mood for Indian. On the Eastside of Providence, there seem to be three Indian places, and Taste of India was the only one I hadn't tried. I checked their website, found their menu, and ordered takeout. I though the prices were just slightly high, but not too bad. $10 for a Chicken Vandaloo, $11 for Lamb Korma. These prices are on their own website. When I got there, my bill was over $28. Turns out the prices were $11 and $15 (plus tax). To top it all off, the portions were pathetic. They looked reasonable, because they were in reasonable sized containers, but I would say each meal had maybe 6-8 chunks of meat swimming in an ocean of sauce. To be fair, I had no complaints about the quality, though I saw no reason to pay a premium. I see absolutely no reason to go here when Kabob & Curry and India are fairly nearby.

This place has changed dramatically. The portions have become microscopic compared to how I remember it to be. My friend ordered a chickpea entree that was not even half a can of chick peas worth. The two of us had to share a plate of rice that wasn't even enough for one of us. When we asked for another plate of rice, we were given dirty looks. The waitress was rude and awkward, she gave me a dirty look when I said I was all set with just water. When she came over to refill my water, she reached over my plate as I was eating and spilled the water on my napkin and the table. She didn't wipe it up and I had to ask for another napkin. I suppose we didn't order enough food for their liking (1 appetizer and 2 entrees, 1 diet Coke). Sorry, but we're not a couple of gluttons who wanted to stuff our faces. My entree was a Chicken Curry and I had to search for pieces of chicken in the serving bowl. We used to frequent this place a lot, but now it's time to find a Indian restaurant that values it's customers. Sorry, but I get more enjoyment from a bowl of cereal in the morning. Pathetic.

I frequent this place for lunch quite often - I work up the street. Since the remodeling, the decor is rather charming. They have a ton of vegan and gluten-free options, which are all labeled right on the menu. This is pretty rare, and inexplicably helpful.

Much more flavor than kabob and curry which is another popular Indian restaurant nearby.

Standard Indian fare at slightly high prices. I liked my lamb curry and the selection of chutneys just fine, but wasn't blown away. The well-stocked, all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is probably the best deal here, although it too is a bit pricey. I guess I'll just have to keep looking around for stellar Indian food in Providence.

Wouldn't go here unless it was for the lunch buffet or take out (because its so close).

The decor was totally nothing special, but I thought the food was great here -- better than most Indian. BUT it tasted even better the next day, heated up.
