In the words of my friend Jose, who you almost certainly don't know: Haruki Express, do NOT get at me. I came to Haruki Express because I wanted Asian food, was on Waterman, and a quick perusal of Yelp reviews showed that it had an entire star over Spice Thai. I was planning on getting sushi, so maybe if I'd done that I'd have a better opinion of the restaurant. However, today's special was chicken fried rice, spicy basil and regular varieties. Why it was a special, I don't know, since there was no special deal, but maybe it's not on the regular menu. My first warning flag came when I ordered and asked for it with no onions. The cashier told me that it is all premixed at the beginning of the day and then heated up. As a result, they were necessarily included, but there weren't many. I thought that was not ideal, but I figured it might be standard practice. It came out, and I thought the heating would take place in a pan. No no, it just gets shoved in a microwave. It was loaded with onions and dripping in oil. On my way out, the cashier asked how I'd liked it, and I told her it was onion-filled and oily, so not great. She responded that she might have left it in the microwave for too long (!), and that the non-spicy version was less oily than the one I'd chosen. Based on the quality itself, I probably would have given Haruki Express two stars, but I went there an hour or two ago and my stomach still hurts. I shall not be returning.

This review is strictly for the restaurant: Even though the wait staff was extremely friendly, I have to say the food was sub par. I was going in not expected much, and thats exactly what I got. My chicken teriyaki was alright, something I definitely could have made myself. The sushi was ehhh not so fresh. And the udon my sister got was bland and boring. One good thing is that it is CHEAP! You get what you pay for I guess... I dont know about the other restaurants in the area but this was definitely a miss.

Went to this place with a friend because she just raves about it so much. I thought the sushi was good, but it was plain, nothing special and jumping out about the flavors. It actually cost about $30 per person between the 2 of us, so I wouldn't really say it's cheap. It was very hard to find parking since this is located in the middle of the city, but that's not the reason for my 3 stars, 3 stars was for the food. When I judge, I don't judge on ambiance and etc as much... Although the place is a cute small place. Tables and chairs that look semi contemporary, bright paint and a small grocery section. The food was ready in a very good amount of time, not a long wait.

Good quality sushi for a good price. Beautiful rolls prepared quickly right before your eyes. I love California rolls so you can't really go wrong there. Good portions too. This place is also a little store if you go in and to the left. They have all sorts of things from aloe drinks, to little fruit chews (which I can't get enough of!.) When the weather is warm enough, you can sit outside and enjoy around you. Sandwiched between Spice and Subway, the friendly orange awning is hard to miss. Stop by and grab some sushi today! :D

If you come here expecting the same quality of sushi as in Haruki East, you will be severely disappointed. Haruki Express is clean, simple, and frequented by students. Service is fairly quick (and very conducive to takeout), and ingredients are fresh. But the execution, that little extra oomph that distinguishes an average sushi roll from a visibly delicious one? That's missing. Also, their miso soup is rather watery and thin. They have a nice little Asian mart that primarily houses Japanese candies, sauces, instant ramen, and other ingredients.

I gave this place more tries and it worked... either I have gotten used to the place or it has really improved, but the food is good and staff is great. A perfectly great place to stop for quick sushi, salad, and little store with Japanese treats.

The vibe here is like Ikea on crack meets convenience store. The staff is nice and the place looks clean. Items in the convenience store side were cool they had Matcha powder, different juices and asian snacks. The sushi is pretty good too. Both times I've come here the fish was fresh. My only complaint is that they were a bit skimpy on the spicy mayo on my spicy tuna :(. Another complaint is that I ordered three orders of sushi to go and they put all three in one box.. Like what if I am a closet Mysophobic and I was sharing with someone? Would I come back? Yes! next time I'll order spicy mayo on the side and ask for my orders in separate boxes :) Also parking sucks! But that's for anything on or near Thayer street (boo!)

Haruki Express is a casual sushi bar / convenience store store tucked down a flight of stairs on Waterman St. I always go for some sort of veggie roll for a healthy but filling meal. Workers make the rolls right after you order, so sometimes I call in ahead of time to shave off some minutes. I need to mention that I tried their miso soup a couple of times and ultimately realized I don't like the way theirs is made. I dig the service. Workers seem pretty low energy from being in the same shop all day but I've struck up conversations with some and they've been engaging in that way. The environment is super casual and usually quiet. Very rarely is a big group in their so it's great to meet a friend to chat over food or sit by yourself to do some work, etc. There's also t.v. I found it pretty quirky in the beginning but right behind you when you order is a few shelves reminiscent of a convenience store, but filled with Japanese goodies. There's even a small frozen food area. On occasion I've picked up some pocky sticks, but my favorite is the rice seasoning. I asked a worker about the seasoning and he said he usually just put it on top of cooked white rice. When I got home I didn't want to just pour it on top of cooked rice, so instead I simmered it with cooking rice and the result was delicious! For just a few dollars and a bunch of uses this rice seasoning is a good buy when waiting for your food at Haruki Express. When I'm in the area and in the mood for some filling veggies rolls, I'll be back to Haruki Express.

Haruki is a solid casual sushi joint that was my go-to as a student in the area. Prices aren't super cheap but it's very reasonable given the quantity of sushi you get and the location right by Thayer. I always get a bunch of different sashimi and the cuts almost always are well made and generous. The sushi combos are a great deal but you don't get to pick your rolls. They also do great party platters for events. Definitely recommended if you are in the area but nothing special; just solid sushi

Ah ha! This was unexpected. The reason they get 4 stars is because they have a small grocery store inside with decently priced snacks and a good variety of Japanese specialty foods, like pickled ginger and radishes, curries, mochi, and such. I tried their unagi rice bowl today, which was pretty good, considering it's pretty tough to go wrong with unagi, but the portion was small and it seems in catering to a more western crowd the served it with little rice that was totally drowned in sauce... nevertheless, i'll be going there again to try out the rest of their dons (if only they served katsu don!) and possibly their sushi if I'm feeling adventurous.

Haruki express has very friendly staff and rather good sushi. However, the staff is sometimes sick, and I don't really enjoy having my credit card handled by someone with a very stuffy nose... My family is part Japanese so I grew up around good Japanese food. That said, I didn't expect to find the same quality of food here in America than back home. Haruki express is a good way for me to fulfill some of my sushi cravings when I'm here in Providence. It's a good place for lunch, when I just want to pick up a basic roll or nigiri. I think the prices are generally okay, compared to the cost of Japanese food in the states, but definitely not cheap. Their fish is generally fresh, although sometimes the salmon is strangely fishy, which makes me wonder how long they have had the fish there for, or if the fish is even sushi-grade. I tried to get hamachi (yellow tail) here a few times, but have since stopped because the yellow tail never seemed that fresh. I enjoy yellow tail for it's sweet after taste, not fishy after taste. The store always has a rather strong smell - a combination of the microwaved beef rice bowls (they seem to have the beef in plastic packets that they open up and microwave) and the deep-frier. A better ventilation system will go a long way. I enjoy their little market area, since I can find a lot of my mini Asian cravings there - even that Japanese mayo!

I absolutely adore Haruki East, so I was curious about Haruki Express, which is just a few blocks west of the restaurant. We got take-out from here, and it was fine. The fish was fresh, and all the flavor was there. However, if you're looking for something truly delicious, just go to Haruki East. I feel like the execution is better there, and their take-out if just as easy. I think the gimmick here at Haruki Express is the grocery store side of the operation. A great selection of sauces, Japanese-style ingredients and the like. I can't really put my finger on what was missing, all I can say is that it was lack-luster. Haruki Easy is the way to go, in my opinion, kids.

Haruki Express is OK. Just OK. But with the Haruki stamp on it, I want more than OK. I stop by when I'm in the Brown area and in a rush for a fresh lunch to go, but otherwise it's not really a destination. The lunch specials at Sakura are a better deal and I agree with Hilary, Haruki East and any of our fine local sushi locations will "express" an order for takeout just as efficiently. But it is really nice to wander the shop and check out the cool Japanese pantry items while you wait for your order. (Wondering what "Men's Pocky" is? Well, if you like your Pocky like you like your men - bittersweet, tall, dark, and handsome - this is your Pocky.) I recently ordered a roll topped with eel sauce. Love my unagi, but this was an overly-sweet, heavy gel. I had to scrape it off, losing my roe in the process... sorry little guys! Otherwise, decent sushi every time. Bonus point for the perfectly-shaped, thin, rectangular coated disposable soy sauce dishes they give you to go. Condiment cups are just awkward.

Decent sushi cheap They sell wasabi peas, too Alternative lunch Haruki Express is the sort of place I wish was in my college neighborhood. Quick and easy sushi, dine in or take out, with a small grogery selling green tea, hot sauce and all manner of unidentifieable pickeled products. The regulars are known by their orders, and nothing's too terribly expensive. The Miso soup is delicious, and not as salty as most; a huge bonus as most miso's leave me thinking I opened my mouth in the ocean. I would prefer a little more seaweed and scallions, but overall it's a nice light soup. The sushi is pretty large for the price, and the rice base is amazing. I came in during a late afternoon and the place was barren. The rice could have been sitting for an hour or two in the kettle getting mushy, but it hadn't been. It was still the perfect consisteny and taste, a welcomed surprise. I had the Roll Combo A, with Sake Maki, Tekka Maki and California Roll. The Maki's were delicious, and the fish was firm and fresh. The California roll was a bit disappointing, with the avocado being incredibly soft, not firm as it should be. It was more of a guacamole consistency. This is the type of place to stop by if you need a quick dinner and can't possibly bear the thought of Wendy's or some other fast food. The staff is super friendly and the sushi is better than expected for takeout.

I'm reviewing for a combination of the market/restaurant. Mainly, I would probably make a trip to Haruki East for the market essentials. For being in College Hill it has an okay selection of items, from your staples like different kinds of sauces to even frozen items like manju & mochi ice cream. Good place to go if you're going to be making some asian food and need a few ingredients. For the actual food--I like Haruki a lot better in terms of the food being served.

Quick, fresh and relatively cheap. This is a good place to go if you're looking to satisfy your sushi craving (which if you're like me can get quite intense!). I got the sushi combo. A and I like how they let me switch out one of the items for something else (me like choices!). It came with miso soup, but you can choose salad if you wanted that. The rice was made well -- not too mushy nor overly or under seasoned. The fish on my nigiri wasn't anything to do a back flip about, but it wasn't bad either. I was actually able to finish my miso, which had a good mix of tofu and seaweed without being intensely sodium-laden like some misos can be. The restaurant is clean and very express (you bus your own table). I left satisfied and would definitely come back if I wanted a quick sushi fix.

Hi All. I very rarely leave reviews, but I'm logging in especially just to share my opinion on this one. I ordered a fish-curry for lunch. Granted, one should maybe think twice before asking for something like that at a small sushi place, but I took a chance. The fish had been dumped directly out of a can onto a bed of dry white rice, and a spoonful of something that barely tasted of anything but resembled red curry was dribbled over it. It's the first time in a long time that I've been insulted at the food a restaurant serves. I could have made the same thing at home with 2 dollars at the grocery store and a can opener. I won't go back.

Madeleine's Thoughts Mochi ice cream?! Panda chocolate cookies?! Those stick things you dip in chocolate?!?!?!?! I had never actually been inside Haruki Express so I had never noticed the little convenience store inside. It's wonderful! Prepackaged noodles, mochi icecream bonbons (which are deeeeelicious! $5 for a box of 6. Good for me!). I decided to grab lunch while I was there. I got a chicken teriyaki rice bowl, which I'd give 2-3 stars. It was super hot which was GREAT but the chicken wasn't the greaaatest. I will definitely be returning here... mochi mochi mochi! I can't get enough!!! I give the restaurant alone 2-3 stars... but that convenience store grabbed another one!

for a tiny tiny take-out/eat in/mini-grocery which doesn't claim to be much of anything, i was amazed. wonderfully fresh sushi. ridiculously large portions. melt-in-your-mouth rice. great prices. good miso soup. i'd say this place has the best sushi i've ever had to date. i have not had their entrees or other soups, though. i want to go to their sit-down restaurant. and then i'll write more.

Oh Haruki express... you are affordable... but I must say over the last couple of years... the meat aspect of your portions have gotten smaller and the rice portions larger... While everything is okay, i sorta feel like I am being ripped off...

I prefer Haruki East's atmosphere. Haruki express has the same quality sushi but the smells and grocery store like atmosphere are off putting. I suggest ordering takeout from Haruki East. I have noticed that there are some differences in their menu prices- it may be worth checking out. One of the best sushi places on (right off) Thayer Street.

  • Donna L.

I love this place. It is unbelievably close and reasonably priced. I order California rolls here at Express because if I wanted sashimi or more complicated sushi, I'd make the trek down to Sakura on Wickenden for it. Stick to the basic at Express so far as sushi goes because seeing all this raw fish in a dinky little basement restaurant is just unappealing. All the dons are great, though. Purists may not think so, but for $6, a giant gyu-don with tons of seasoned, sliced beef is just what I want. A throw back to Yoshinoya, but who cares? I love Yoshinoya. The tiny convenience store is just what I have been looking for. I never quite mapped out how I would get my supplies of Asian snacks when I transplanted myself here to New England, so I'm so glad I found Haruki Express. A giant selection of ramen, chips, and candy. The best part is that they don't price gouge. I just wish they would restock more often because there are times I would come here and the shelves would just be barren like a hurricane warning drove everyone to horde everything.
