This place is a gem but you have to be careful. The people that run the place are Cambodian. This usually means their Chinese dishes are not their best. I have always had good food here but I was steered toward the good dishes by a friend who had gone there many times. Basically any of the Cambodian dishes are phenomenal. Their specials are usually wonderful. I feel like it is typical of a lot of pan asian places in that they make a huge range but specialize in a much smaller range. I would definitely suggest trying a range of dishes and giving it a couple tries. Apsara (just down the street) is more consistent but when Gourmet House nails a dish it is unparalleled.

Waited months for Gourmet House to reopen! Finally went to the newly opened Gourmet House and here's the honest truth: Gourmet House had been the best place for price, portion, and service in Chinese food on the east side. The newly renovated decor looks like an awful Olive Garden. The new owners are the same as Aspsara's Palace on Hope Street, from which what I gather is not the GOOD Apsaras but merely the branch off who is on a lower tier and hires terrible employees who get fired from the original one. The new Gourmet House has terrible food, awful service (I waited at a table for 20 minutes before water glasses were even offered, while the restaurant was practically empty). If you're a fan of the OLD Gourmet House do NOT expect the wonderful food and service you're used to while going back now.

I went here today for lunch as was really impressed at the overall experience. Under new ownership since June 2010, the changes were very apparent. The atmosphere was clean, wood floors, service was prompt, the waiter spoke English, and great menu. The lunch specials were about $5.95 each and included the option of nim chow as appetizer to accompany meal. I heard great reviews from other diners on the noodle soups which by the way are about $5.00 regular price. I actually really loved looking at the decor. There are upside-down asian umbrella inspired ceiling lamps, and some Cambodian temple art inscribed in bas-relief on one of the walls. The faux painting was interesting to look at, and provided some welcome change to most of the other restaurants I've been to in the area. I think as long as you avoid the Chinese entree's you'll be fine. Also the tea was fantastic - and arrived within 3 minutes of sitting down. HIGHLY recommend. Particularly for lunch! Reasonable menu and if you are in the neighborhood, you'll have a positive experience. Did I mention it was really clean? I'd go back, and recommend you go too!

I love this place. The first time I came here, I was unaware of their hours and rolled in about 5 minutes before close. The waitress was sweet and said that she could still serve us, we said no worries, we would be back another day (I could never do that to any kitchen). Came back the next day and the waitress recognized my group. We were sat quickly and she brought us a free app "for last night." Even after this above average hospitality, I was still impressed with how great the food is and how reasonably it's all priced. Definitely recommend the steamed pork buns and nim chow.

Really good Chinese food and it's also BYOB! So if you want to bring a 40 of Miller Lite, go right ahead!

Gourmet house has reopened under the management of Kim, the wonderful woman who runs the wonderful Apsara Palace 2 doors down the street. While the menu is very similar, it seems that each dish is perked up a bit from the Apsara Palace menu. A little added something here, maybe a different recipe there. all in all, very good, in a comfortable place. Roomy, quiter and slightly more fancy than Apsara Palace next door. the staff at both restaurants is fabulous and friendly. I noticed another reviewer who mentioned that the Chinese dishes were "not their best". I assumed that they served those dishes (eg. Won Ton, Teryaki, Lomein) as filler dishes for people who were scared of Cambodian food.

Deep fried authentic Cambodian-style glutinous rice flour dumplings stuffed with Asian leeks. They're like crispy little pillows, so good they're worth burning your tongue for (and trust me, you'll be impatient enough to do so). I know that these alone will have me coming back to Gourmet House over and over. The rest of the menu was intriguing. Being that I only eat vegetarian or fish out at non-kosher restaurants, I'm usually pretty limited in my choices at non-vegetarian joints. Not here. There were at least 10 dishes we wanted to try, and there was even a separate vegetarian menu, so narrowing our selection was not easy. We settled on the crispy fried tilapia with black bean ginger sauce and the bean vermicelli with tofu and vegetables. The tilapia (also a traditional Cambodian dish, according to our waiter) was delicious, perfectly tender and flavorful, with the amazing sweet/vinegary/salty black bean ginger sauce. Sadly, it was flanked on both sides by beautiful but flavorless out-of-season tomatoes and cucumbers. I wish they could have thought to substitute seasonal vegetables for these or at least made this a summer only dish. The bean vermicelli was very flavorful as well, stirfried with nicely crisp vegetables and pleasantly salty tofu, in a garlicky sauce. However, they were a little heavy-handed with the corn starch in this dish, and it came out a bit gummy. I'd definitely go back. I'm especially intrigued by some of the chef's original creations, such as "Lady in Green", a salmon fillet cooked in a cabbage wrapper and served with asparagus on top. Of course, I'd also order the Cambodian fried dumplings.

The lunch specials at this place are just awesome, as is the decor. You get the choice of an egg roll, a spring roll, crab rangoon, or nime chow as your appetizer, and they offer brown rice and sticky rice. Everything I've had there has been good.

5 stars for their customer service when I came in w/ a party of 4+ baby. Came here for lunch and the waitress was really friendly, accommodating, and helpful. Lunch specials are super cheap and portion size is good. There was a crabby guy sitting near us dining solo and had some complaint about the wait for food, bit we got our food very fast . I'll definitely be back here!

A restaurant lost in the eternal question.....do we serve Thai food or Chinese?? Austere on the outside .... and on the inside, considering the Vietnamese joint around the corner is jumping (we've surmised that it is an effect of low prices and high student crowd attendance!!) Either way, this is a definite stop if you are looking to "fill the belly" and look a lot like Buddah (LOL). The servings are definitely outstanding and the food is good (think of the Arby's guy singing - "It's Good Mood Food!!!). Lot's of bang for your buck. The service was fantastic (although, just about the time we left, I thought that two more servers might be a little more adequate for the given crowd - two is not enough!!) We found out that they obviously take parties - a fact that will not go un-noted in our party book!! All-in-all I'd say that the Gourmet House was a great pick (a Yelp mobile pick) and that we'd definitely go back again!!!!

My wife and i were very disappointed with the quality of food at Gourmet House. We tried a few different items and all of them were sub-par (one dish was Chinese the other was Thai). I'm typically very leery of eating at restaurants that feature numerous different asian specialities (Chinese , cambodian, Thai, Japanese). While these types of cuisine have similar ingredients and characteristics, they all have distinct flavor differences. Unfortunately, Gourmet House fell into the category of an Asian restaurant that doesn't have a true identity (is it a Thai, Chinese or Cambodian restaurant)? It tries too hard to be all and misses by not mastering one. Lastly, the service was extremely slow. We ordered take out, they told us 15 minutes and the food wasn't ready until about 35-40 minutes after we called the order in. I would have been fine with this if the restaurant was busy, however there was not ONE single customer in the restaurant.

So, this place is like Bizarro Apsara Palace. It is right down the street, and we actually went because Apsara was out of high chairs for Jax Love. We were dying for Thai (dhaing would be a fitting combo of the words dying and Thai), and I had walked by this place before, so I said "Two tears in a bucket, fuck'it" and mosied on down. It was dead. D-E-A-D. Saturday at lunch, huge wait at Apsara, Dead Sea Scrolls at Gourmet House. Huh. So we walked in, were seated by a wonderful older woman who played peekabo with the lil' guy, and were promptly presented with a high chair, ice water and tea. As with many SE Asian restaurants, this place is a family joint, with mom waiting the tables, dad doing the cooking, and the son looking generally pissed off and smoking cigs while watching TV. (we didnt actually see him smoke, but Im no dumbie, and this nose is a keen instrument, like CSI Olfaction in this mug) We ordered all Thai, but, like Apsara, you have choices from Chinese to Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian. Like Apsara, there's a huge white board with specials. Like Apsara, a little shrine. The food was good, but not as good as Apasara. Spring rolls, Pad Thai, Chicken With Pepper..all good but not great. The sweet and sour soup was pretty good as well. Service was lickety split, and the bill was tiny, about 25% less than it's more popular neighbor of Majestic name. This is a viable alternative to Apsara if you are in Hope Village and dont want to wait, have a huge party, etc.

I am really disappointed in this place. It all seems so yummy on the menu but not so good to eat. I ordered one of the special chicken dishes and was given a plate of glorious noodles with RAWWWWWWW chicken(the kind that is pink and orange inside!). :( I was so bummed out because everything else looked great. I only noticed after I had eaten another piece of it. When I returned my takeout I gave her back the other dish we had ordered and she didnt understand why I didnt want to eat it. FAIL. I have also had the sweet and sour soup from here only to find that Apsara(2 steps away from this place) actually uses fresh pineapple instead of canned wich believe it or not is a major difference when making this soup! So.....as far as kindness goes, yes, they are very nice. As far as food goes...not awesome.

I've been to this place a few times and it's always a yummy, affordable meal. I will say that it's hard to drive by Apsara Palace next door to eat at Gourmet House, but definitely still worth a try.

The food was good and the prices were fine. Nice atmosphere. The only thing we didn't like was the dishonesty. We had bought a groupon worth $50. Our total order was $44 and change, which we saw twice as they first added it up and we were near the register. They than came over and told we were all set with out ever giving us a check. We asked for the check and they were charging us $48 and change. They had a purchase on there for $13.99 so we asked what that was for. She (the head manager) said "oh, isn't that the price for the appetizer you got?" She than went back and fixed and it came back at $44 and change, which was what it originally added up to. I know it's only $4 buck difference but it was so sneaky and dishonest. Unfortunately, we would never go back because of this. It's dishonest and stealing. I took home another nime chow for that price. And they should have just been honest from the beginning.

Everything that I have ever ordered here has been absolutely delicious, and I have been coming here for years. The Nime Chow is the freshest and best I have ever tasted. The soups are amazing, but I wish they did not use MSG, as I am allergic. The Cambodian Noodle Soup is my all time favorite food ever, but I get horrifying migraines from the MSG. The owner always graciously offers to dilute the broth with non-MSG broth, but I still get a migraine. The crispy fish is outrageously yummy, and always be sure to order a large order of sticky rice, as it is absolutely addictive...fragrant, sweet and texturally perfect and you will want to dip it in the delicious sauce(s) from your meal. The shrimp w Thai broccoli is amazing, as is anything with Lemongrass. The service is always excellent, very friendly, and the waitress remembers what you like to order. Oh If they ever make the Cambodian Noodle Soup w/o MSG, I would eat here daily. Is there no alternative to MSG?

Wow! The Gourmet House is extremely affordable with huge portion sizes. We had a large party, and the wait staff was very friendly and accomodating. I was impressed with the menu, albeit hard to choose with so many options. And the free hot tea is a nice addition. I tried some type of Vietnamese lettuce wrap dish with chicken. It was pretty good. The restaurant also seems to be in a fun, quirky neighborhood. I wish I had had more time to explore.

The food is good, but nothing special. The prices are unreal. We usually spend under $30 including tip for two entrees, an appetizer, and two sodas. Come here during lunch and the prices get even better! Service is always very friendly and welcoming. However, one time one of the waiters had decided to give us an attitude for the remainder of our stay after my bf had asked to change one small detail about his order. Although, we have returned and that same waiter is now very nice to us. Ambiance is nice! Most Asian restaurants are a little tacky or unkempt, not this one. If you are looking for spectacular, this isn't it. There is definitely better. But it is a step above mediocre. Good prices, Good food, Good service, Good atmosphere.

Gourmet House has some really great food, but if you have an allergy, be very clear in how you communicate. I've accidentally been served gluten there in "hidden" sources, but when you are explicit, they accommodate you. It is, by far, the best nime chow in the city, and the banh hoi is certainly worth writing home about. It can get rather crowded here, with some long wait times for dinner. Don't worry--it's worth the wait! The curried dishes are phenomenal and taste great in the gluten-free version. I highly recommend the green and red curries--they might have more official names, but I think on the menu, they're literally called green and red. Solid four stars all around. It's a popular family restaurant, and it's BYOB, so be aware that your date night might involve some screaming toddlers.

I used to dine here years ago but sort of forgot about the place. Recently, another Yelper commented to me that the chefs that made Apsara so great were now cooking at Gourmet House. Enticed by this news, I've been back several times, and each experience has been better than the last. The food is perfect, not hit or miss like Apsara, and the staff is always very helpful when I ask to try new things. Recently, I brought an extended family member here, one of the finickiest people on planet Earth, and even she thought the food was divine. If I'm in the area and have the opportunity to grab a bite to eat, this is a top contender for my time and money.

Went there with a Groupon. We had never been before, but heard good things about it. Four of us shared several apps and entrees. Here's the feedback: -Nime Chow (Chicken) Good, fresh, light - Beef Teriyaki Tasty, well marinated, tender - Crab rangoon Crispy and light on the inside - Scallion pancakes Crispy, not too much taste, kind of oily - Crispy Egg Noodle Topping too wet, noodle got soft and wet - CRISPY BONELESS DUCK BABY SHANGHAI WITH FRESH GINGER GARLIC SAUCE T There were bones, not crispy skin, bland meat taste. - Loc Lac Khmer (Shrimp) Shrimp was tasty, over bed of lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. Overall ok food, nothing memorable.....Seemed cleaner than Apsara's.....

Gourmet House used to be a favorite takeout place, but a series of mistakes and bad attitudes have left me feeling like I need to go elsewhere. Several times it was little things-forgetting to leave off sprouts, making food too spicy, etc, but this time my food was close to inedible. My shrimp with lemongrass sauce which I was led to believe had grilled or steamed shrimp came with soggy, breaded shrimp. Most of them had not been de-veined which is totally unappetizing. When I called to complain, the woman who answered had a horrible attitude and kept calling me Sweetheart-a pet peeve of mine. I think I am ready to break up with the bad boyfriend rather than giving him one more try.

This place as become a regular dine-in place for me. The food is excellent and the service is quick. They usually have groups which is nice because you can save some cash. They give you large portions so be prepared for leftovers (which reheat/taste good). The only reason they don't get five stars is because sometimes they will miss an item you ordered and sometimes the meal comes out in portions instead of all together. However, it always tastes fresh and the food is hot, so it doesn't effect the experience much. Food: Nime Chow is delicious Chicken Fingers are all white meat and cooked well. The Bee Bong is awesome The Chicken Pad Thai is amazing The House Fried Rice is also very tasty

Cheap, delicious, and lots of variety. What more could you ask for from an Asian cuisine restaurant? Gourmet House offers a mix of Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, and Cambodian dishes, all at great prices. We came here after our phone book search for restaurants failed, and were pleasantly surprised with what we got. We ordered the crab rangoon and crispy chicken wings with red peppers. Those chicken wings were the BOMB - just crispy enough on the outside to retain the flavor of the peppers, and so moist on the inside. We also got chicken pad thai, shrimp pad thai, the sizzling seafood platter, and duck basil, with a plate of white rice. Everything tasted fresh, authentic, and not too heavily fried. The Thai iced tea we ordered for drinks was quite good, too. There was only one waitress (who was serving eight or nine groups of people, including us) who tried her best waiting on everyone there. Despite her handicap of the day, she was quite good about getting us our check and change. Not a bad place to eat, especially if you just come here on a whim.

I've been going to Apsara since 2005 and I've never had a bad experience. Apsara's neighbor (under the same ownership), the Gourmet House, is just a little more expensive (like 25 cents) and it seems like just a tad better than Apsara, although I never thought that was possible!!! I've heard that the food is made in the same kitchen and brought between the restaurants from the back yard (which is a little sketch and might be a bit true), the menu has all of Apsara's same signature dishes. My favorite's: Vegetarian Nime Chow has literally the best peanut dipping sauce I've had at any Thai restaurant. The Scallion Pancakes are unparalleled. My favorite though is the Tofu-Veggie Shaghai Udon Noodles (no egg!) I think the egg makes it taste different & not as good....It's absolutely amazing and the best around! Must try if in Providence.

Portions huge!! Pad thai amazing! Plus BYOB , I'm hooked, But the only negative is msg is in most meals and the waiter wasn't to knowledgable about ingredients! I came here Saturday afternoon with 10 girlfriends and we drank, ate and chatted! Great time

The curb appeal at this establishment is seriously lacking. However, upon walking in to Gourmet House you are taken to a totally different place. Typically i get lured in by Apsara so i have over looked this restaurant for quite some time. After getting turned away from Apsara the Mister suggested we give Gourmet House a shot. I'm SO glad we did!! My Hot Basil Lemongrass was to die for! The spice was just right and the food was super delicious. This would have easily been a 5 star review except for one thing... the Hot and Sour soup. It had too much corn starch in it which lead to the broth being a little gummy...? The consistency of semi-melted gummy worms in the soup. I'd still recommend this to anyone!

    (4)
  • Rachael M.

Cheap food...not inexpensive though. Very loud and not the friendliest staff. Very Americanized Asian food. If you want that greasy, MSG filled food...this is the place. Otherwise, try Apsara on Public Street on the South Side (not the Hope Street location...different owners).

I haven't really tried any of the traditional gree-sy chinese food but I have enjoyed everything I've had. By far their best offering is their delicious and dirt cheap lunch specials- especially during the the week (under $6!) In my experience they are generous portions with a good mix of meat and veggies. To top it off they have BROWN RICE and choice of appetizer. Their Vietnamese dishes are good too but not as good as the uniquely Vietnamese joints IMO. Add to this a cushy, quiet and comfortable dine in experience (Read: Not the chaotic Apsara Palace next door) and we have a winner. I wish I could eat here for lunch everyday!

  • Shibs K.

I ordered the lunch special for $6.50...and I took leftovers home! Seriously, one of the best Nime Chows I've ever had...stuffed with fresh goodness, excellent dipping peanuty sauce, and they did not skimp on the basil For the main entree I went for the Num Yaa Creamy Curry Chicken...I was very pleased with the portion and fresh veggies (green beans, asparagus, red and green bell peppers, onions, etc) I loved that they bring you a hot kettle of tea

Gourmet House has many things going for it: good quality food, inexpensive (but NOT "cheap" such that it's poor product), and a great menu. I come here for take out more often than for dine in and I can get enough food for a meal and easily two leftover meals for $5-$6 a pop. If you do dine in, expect a friendly, casual atmosphere that is a great way to spend a meal.

I gotta agree w/Robert S's experience here. Also went w/Groupon, so was able to try a bunch of dishes: -nime chow: standard, comparable to other places -fried crispy chicken w/lemongrass sauce on the side: highly rec sauce on the side if you don't want soggy chicken. The crispy chicken was flavorful by itself & actually crispy! kind of tastes like salt & pepper calamari. The lemongrass sauce is delicious! If you get the sauce on the side, you can add meat to it later & eat it with rice- like a lemongrass curry dish. It's like a whole other meal! This was the only dish I liked, sadly -loc lac w/beef: can't even comment on how the flavor was bc I was busy trying to chew the darn beef! Poor poor quality of beef. Not edible -crispy tofu w/sesame sauce: not crispy at all. Tofu was soft & that sesame sauce had a weird sweet but artificial aftertaste. Not worth the calories so didn't eat it -Thai basil stir-fry w/chicken: tasty, light, not heavy on the sauce but the chicken was dry... Or poor quality. I don't know which it was but I ended up just eating the veggies. The service was great, welcomed immediately & service was super fast. But the food was average... Less oily than apsara. The lemongrass sauce & crispy chicken made this 3 stars. However, the poor meat quality either the cut or the way it was cooked drops my review down to 2.5 stars. I'll round up to 3 bc of the prompt & nice service tho. I wasn't impressed.

Have been twice, like the food quite a bit but on the two occasions, found all the stir-fry dishes we ordered a little oily. I know this is this outfit is run by the owners of Apsara, and I solidly gave them a four stars (despite similar oily experiences -- but those were occasional, so I'm wondering if I happened to get a chef who loves for canola oil?) So next time, I'd ask to go light on oil, especially for the green beans and the eggplant dishes. But one of the non-stir-fry dishes, the boneless duck, was super yum. Very friendly staff, good prices, pleasant enough atmosphere. Thanks, Gourmet House!

I've been here twice since they've reopened under new management (Apsara Palace management, actually) and it's pretty good. More space and more upscale-looking than Apsara Palace, but the prices aren't that much higher - this evening my husband and I had dinner for under $30, including tip. Go for the Cambodian options, but the Thai options aren't bad either.

I was very sad to see the original owners leave this place. Their chicken on the green was the most amazing things I have ever eaten! But when I learned that Gourmet House was reopening, I was cautiously happy. When I learned that Apsara Palace and the new Gourmet House were owned by the same people, that added great confusion... But, things are much clearer now! Though both places are owned and operated by the same team of people, the food at Gourmet House is better. Say, exponentially better. The Pad Thai is simply delicious and Kaing Kaew soup is just as awesome. My girlfriend ordered the Stir Fried Num Ya Cream Noodle and just one bite made me smile. To say it was tasty is an understatement. I am glad that Apsara Palace has more room for their many customers. This place is very spacious and it isn't nearly as crowded. Plus, I love the decor; quite upscale in comparison to Apsara Palace. In sum, you must try this place!

I had not visited Gourmet House since they changed ownership and when I went there tonight with my brother and sister in law, I was pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh, plentiful and the prices affordable. And because the same people own Apsara Palace next door, the Gourmet House caters to a slightly older and quieter crowd while keeping their standards high at both restaurants. It is not easy to do a variety of Asian foods well but they seem to carry it off. I recommend the soups and noodle dishes but I need to come back again on my next visit to RI and try some more dishes.

Got takeout, so I cant comment on the dine-in experience. When ordering I though this was just another chinese/asian takeout place. Turns out they have really flavorful dishes a definite cut above a regular corner chinese takeout restaurant. I tried three different dishes (chicken and 2 vegetarian) and all were filled with flavor and vegetable variety. One negative is that white rice is not included with entrees (wtf, seriously?), but the whole menu is still pretty fairly priced considering the quality of the food you get. I will definitely be back.

Not sure what has happened here, we have eaten at Gourmet House and gotten take out for years under both owners and never had a complaint. I tend to prefer it to the chaos and lack of atmosphere at Apsara Palace. On our most recent visit, I ordered Green Curry with chicken. Arriving home, I opened the container to find seriously GREEN food, like EMERALD green. Horrified, I decided to try it even though the color was nauseating. I then decided to pick out the chicken and just eat that. It was so green, I couldn't tell that it was chicken. By this time I was angry so I called to ask if there was food coloring in my dish. Sure enough, the woman who answered the phone admitted that green food coloring had been used. Not only that, she told me she had noticed how green my food was when she packaged it. When I asked why she didn't have the chef do it over, her response was that they would probably over color it AGAIN!! What an admission! Elsewhere, green curry has green vegetables like beans, peppers, zucchini, pea pods etc that make it "green" and the sauce is a creamy color. I was offered an opportunity for a credit and re-select at a later date, but i'm going to take a pass. My husband didn't like his Lemongrass Chicken which was not as it used to be and had different vegetables than usual. There must be a new chef here cause this is all quite unusual for Gourmet House. We will not be back anytime soon!!

I've tried a lot of asian food joints in PVD and I really think Gourmet House is my current front runner. The food is authentic and not filled with funky food colorings or any unnatural stuff which I've run into at a certain neighboring place. Delicious and reasonably priced.

I originally come from Providence but now live in Kansas. When I go back to Providence, I try different restaurants. In 2007, I literally walked into this place without knowing about Aspara which is literally just south on Hope Street (it is a little further away from the street). Bad mistake. The menu is nothing to write home about . I can't even remember what I had but it was average at best and nothing special at all. I would never go here again. There are too many better places like right next door with much better tastier fare. Try Aspara just south on Hope Street. Now they have amazing Asian food that you will tell everybody about. (See my review of Aspara for more)

When i was in providence (RI), we went to a yummy, cheap restaurant called Gourmet House Restaurant. It has a pretty boring name, but it serves yummy thai and other asian food. I had some very good curry, and this addicting thai iced tea that was red tinted. I've never had the red kind before... We had probably about six people at the table, and were seated right away, even on a Friday night, and the whole bill was so cheap, although I don't remember the amount anymore. I highly reccomend it and I bet I'll try to eat there again this summer when I live there for a couple weeks.

Went here for lunch. They have a nice listing of lunch specials. I had the bee bong, which was not a lunch special, but the price was equally reasonable. It is the first time I've had bee bong, so I cannot compare it to others. However, it was delicious, tasty, not over salty, and generous in portion size. I also had the hot and sour soup which was also tasty. I would eat here again and would love to order the bee bong.

I strolled in here with 20 minutes before my hair appointment. I asked them if they could get me a bowl of soup and out of there in 15 and they took the job like champs. Within 5 minutes I had a bowl of some delicious hot & sour soup on my table and a little teapot of tea. Since everything was going so well, I asked them to grab me a batch of lo mein for later that night. They got it out in a jiffy. I wasn't a gigantic fan of the chicken lo mein. The chicken was a little weird for me. Next time I'd just get lo mein noodles. By the way, these are skinny lo mein noodles, not big fat yellow ones like you're used to elsewhere. Overall, it wasn't the bad, but it wasn't that good. Would I eat here again? Probably.

Went here for lunch a few weeks ago. Nice little spot but parking can be a hassle - mainly on street parking. I ordered the spicy wings lunch combo and it came with fried rice and a nime chow (very nice touch!) My bf ordered a beef lunch combo dish (can't remember the name) that came with fried rice and an eggroll. Also ordered a hot and sour soup and honeydew bubble tea. Overall, food came out very quickly and was was tasty. For what you paid, I think they skimped a little on the bubble tea, seemed a little light of a pour. Def would come back bc I prefer Southeast Asian vs Chinese so this is a great option.

I haven't had anything here that I didn't like. I always choose this place over apsara too because the food is fresher, the service is great, and there is never a wait. They are also byob, and have plenty of space for large groups. I always felt like I was sitting on the people next to us when I used to go to Apsara. Try the red curry and Thai lemongrass. The steamed dumplings are really great too.

  • Angel W.

Let's just start with the fact that it's BYOB! Which allowed us to bring a nice $35 bottle of wine that any restaurant would have tripled the price on. Now add the fact that the staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable when it came to the menu. The duck in the ginger garlic sauce was crispy the way duck should be. Everything we had was amazing and we can't wait to go back.

Let me start by saying wow! Ive eaten plenty of asian cuisine in my day in this is my new favorite spot. Everything was so fresh and the flavors of the dishes were just amazingly unexpected. I think it's the 1st time I've had this type of good and feel like I just left a salt mine you couldn't even tell they used soy sauce. Ok if you go try the nim chow ,pork buns ,wings too mention a few. I've only given 5 stars a few times counting this place most of my reviews are usually tough because I expect a great experience so if your bad I'll tell you but if your good I'll shout it from the roof tops.

Pretty good Asian takeout food! I headed to Hope Street to Apsara, but couldn't get a seat and didn't want to wait, so my friends and I thought we'd take a chance on the place next door. I'm glad we did! Gourmet house dishes out huge portions of food for very little money! The three of us ordered: - Spring Rolls: THESE ARE DIVINE. Crispy and fresh and oily and supertasty. - Eggplant Satay Sauce Stir Fry: Eh, it's OK. I wish it had been a little lighter on the oil and heavier on the flavour. This tasted a bit like bland eggplant drowned in oil to me. Probably wouldn't order again. - Szechwan Stir Fry: Not amazing, but not terrible. This was oddly sweet for Szechwan-style food - Lo Mein: Pretty good! They do put egg in it though, so be sure to ask if you want them to make it without that. - Brown rice The three of us went to town and ate a ton, after which we still went home with enormous doggy bags that lasted me two extra meals! All for only about $10 each! What an amazing bargain. Tip: Don't come here if you're expecting authentic Asian food. This place is more a mashup of popular American favorites.

have eaten at over 50 thai/cambodian restaurants around the country. Was an Apsara regular, but got tired of the wait and crowded seating. Gourmet House can have service problems, yes, but 95% of the time it is fine and food is excellent if you stick with the Thai and Cambodian. My favorites- salmon with ginger/garlic; lemon grass chicken; pad thai- steamed dumplings; tofu garlic/vegetable.. Haven't found really good Chinese in RI (just got back from San Francisco).

Someone has rightly mentioned below an obscure connection between the ever-popular next door Apsara Palace, which is confirmed when you call in an order and you are asked if you're calling for Apsara or Gourmet House. As far as we can tell there is little difference between the two, perhaps a slight increase in prices at Gourmet House. Still, it is a slight difference. However, since Apsara has now been overrun by patrons, Gourmet House offers a better setting (quite less crowded) with the bonus of having almost same menu items. In response to those who are complaining about the food, I agree there is a slight irregularity in quality. However, it is still a reasonably priced location with consistently good food. Just think of all the Thai options available, how many other Providence Asian places offer them and at competitive prices? Maybe people need to try and contextualize this establishment in the city. Sure you can pay a crap load more but this restaurant offers some great options..

A hidden gem! Gourmet house is definitely worth a try. The dishes offer variety and value that you really can't beat! Order the nime chow (aka fresh rolls) to start, they're $3.99 for 2! Plus they're delicious. The Vietnamese noodle salad is fresh with a delicious subtle sauce, really great! I left there feeling full but healthy! They have other heavier dishes that are equally delicious also. This vegan gives Gourmet House 5 stars.

I just left this restaurant for good. I ordered rice noodle soup and had to send it back. There were bubbles in the soup that appeared to be soap...the soup was served without the majority of spices and vegetables that are common to this dish. I need to add that the smell made me lose my appetite...it smelled like a dead animal

My friends and I used a Groupon for $50 here...and it went far. We got garlic eggplant, nime chow, Thai dumplings, mooshu pork, a salmon dish, and Singaporean style udon noodles. Everything tasted fresh and more or less authentic to true Asian flavors. I would definitely recommend the eggplant and the mooshu with pork. Portions are large. Ambiance is casual. If Apsara is busy, just come here (supposedly it's the same owner). Service can fall by the wayside when it gets busy, around dinnertime.

Ordered takeout, they told us 25 mins. When we arrived, we were told they had no spare ribs, so we settled for beef teriyaki. We waited 25 more minutes for our takeout, along with 5 other people waiting for takeout. After finally getting our order long after the expected time, we discovered they completely messed up our order. We ordered pork lo mein but got chicken. We ordered pork dumplings and got shrimp dumplings. We both felt ill about 10 minutes after eating. Very bad management and sub par food. I will not be going back.

Not impressed. The owners are Cambodian so if you'd prefer to have food that tastes the way it's supposed to taste, I'd suggest ordering something Cambodian. Everything else wasn't that great. When I asked what their best Cambodian dish was, the immediate response was Loc Lac (pronounced "Lo-La"). I should have listened to the server instead of ordering the crispy boneless duck with tamarind sauce that wasn't boneless and didn't taste a thing like tamarind. The majority (if not all) of Asian cultures eat meals with rice (I speak from experience), so it was strange for me to find that their meals don't come with it. You need to order rice on the side. Dislike. Staff is wonderfully friendly and the place is eerily quiet with no real background noise or music.

Gourmet House has been my go to takeout for Asian style food for years, which started back when I lived a few blocks away. I haven't found a better place, and believe me I've tried to find something closer to where I now live. It's a great combo of an inexpensive price point, fresh tasting ingredients and a big selection. I can't really speak to its authenticity but it's made to order and not overly greasy or salty in my experience. My favorite thing to order is the chicken Vietnamese noodle salad, which is enough for at least two meals.

  • Jennifer B.

Very fresh vegetables used in the dishes and probably one of the best nime chow's I have ever had. I had the typical choices (Rangoon,General's Chicken) but want to go out of my comfort zone next time for more authentic dishes after seeing what other diners were eating and how amazing it all smelled.

Delicious meal here tonight. Their beef teriyaki and pork spareribs are some of the best I've tasted. The crab rangoons are yummy, and the Thai pineapple fried rice is very good. And, the bubble tea is a bit more frozen, but very tasty. The place is small, but service was fast and friendly. Not sure how I've missed coming to this place after all this time, when I've been to other nearby restaurants many times. One thing is for sure, I will def be back.

I had popped in one day for lunch with a few girlfriends because the food was nicely portioned at a fair price. I had been there once before with a co-worker and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Second time around wasn't as pleasant of an experience. I had raved about how great this place was to my friends and was embarrassed by how poor the service was that day. They weren't very busy at all at the time, but it took a good 15 minutes to get anyone's attention. We were sat first and then there was an obnoxious Italian family seated behind us and the waiters were tending to the very ignorant uncle at the table. (I won't mention the things he said about the food/origin of the people) but you know where I'm going with that one. Any who we placed our orders and everything came out wrong. I had asked for a Vietnamese iced coffee and waited another 15 minutes just to have the hostess tell me they ran out of it. She clearly didn't care about customer service. I think there was one waiter in the entire restaurant and the other girl just stood behind the desk twiddling her thumbs. Needless to say, I don't see myself going back there in the future. If you're looking for poor service, but fairly priced food, this would be your go-to. This place doesn't deserve my patronage. And I didn't feel comfortable hearing the remarks that man behind me was making. And the fact that the waiter was basically kissing the guy's ass is beyond me. If it were my restaurant, I would've kicked them out. And we weren't the only ones in the restaurant that were uncomfortable by the loud and obnoxious animals behind us.

Delicious meal here tonight. Their beef teriyaki and pork spareribs are some of the best I've tasted. The crab rangoons are yummy, and the Thai pineapple fried rice is very good. And, the bubble tea is a bit more frozen, but very tasty. The place is small, but service was fast and friendly. Not sure how I've missed coming to this place after all this time, when I've been to other nearby restaurants many times. One thing is for sure, I will def be back.

  • Geralyn D.

Probably.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
