Get past the fact that they're on "that side" of the old RI 195 (pre-pre-pre iWay) and that their gaudy mini-blinds display the colors of the Italian flag (in a manner one would find off-putting had Buono's not been so close to Johnston). The reason why people line up around the block, at the earliest slice of dawn on Thanksgiving morning is because of their bread. It is the best in the city, it is the best in the state and is in contention for the best in all of New England. No, seriously. With a whole wheat alternative to their traditional crusty/chewy loaves of luminescence the only issue is building the nerve to head on over. Best bet from downtown: Route 6 West to Killingly, to Hartford. U-turn in front, right wheels to the curb two doors up for a quick get away. Return the way you came. This helps to avoid the triangulated regions that envelope: Peteys, by way of Silverlake, the trigger-friendly overpass known as Glenbridge and the easily-excitable residents of the Hartford Projects.

Bread & savory foods are ok, the pastry isn't. The strawberry shortcake wasn't even shortcake. It was a regular cake with cream & strawberries. I asked for & even pointed to the Danish that I wanted but when I got home it was a raspberry stick. Fine except that it was dry & waxy. This was the third & last time getting pastry there. Drive the extra 3 miles to Whole Foods.....it's worth it. Buono should stick to bread.

This is my favorite bakery in Providence! I lived in Providence for a year and worked near this bakery. They have great pizza strips, calzones and slices of pizza. The bakery spans from bread to pastries. The staff expect you to know what everything is, but just ask and its likely that whatever you pick will be tasty. Their sweets weren't anything to write home about, but their savory, italian offerings definitely earns them 5 stars.

Just bought some different pastries and cake from here. Prices are cheap and all the pastries were good. Also tried the giant chocolate chip cookies, and they were chewy and yummy. I did try the small individual pizzas and was not really impressed. (Jeanette's are better). Overall, I will be back for more, especially for the German chocolate cake rolls and the cream puff things made with chocolate cream!

I have had a few cinnamon rolls in my life. They are my pastry of choice. I just had the pleasure of eating one of their humongous cinnamon rolls. What a treat. They are big enough to share with a friend but I didn't. Just enough icing to be delicious and a few raisins for flavor. I won't mention a price so you'll have the pleasure of being surprised. I also bought a sesame seeded loaf of bread which we had for dinner. I like toasted sesame seeds so I would have like the bread much more if it was covered with them. Seeds were put on top of the loaf before baking and the top was split so the seeds only covered the sides. Overall the bread was good; crusty and chewy outside and soft inside. Good flavor. I've had better tasting bread but never as fresh.

Excellent bread (all kinds), calzones are all good. And the pies for holidays are definitely a good choice for the family to enjoy.

One of the things I miss most having moved from RI to NC is a good Italian bakery. I grew up next door to one so I was hooked at an early age. So when I'm back in RI, I always try to get to Buono's. It's the best in the state. Everything they make is amazing; especially the spinach pies, pizza strips and rolls. In fact, my wife makes me haul spinach pies back to NC by the dozen. Nobody does Italian bakery like Arnie!

Note - this review is about their bread. I have no idea about any of their other goods as I have only ever gotten bread here. Now, this is what Italian bread is supposed to be like! I'm Italian, and have been to Italy several times in my life. This is what bread is like over there. Buono's is the best you can get in Rhode Island, hands down. There are one or two bakeries in the North End of Boston that are almost as good, but for bread that surpasses Buono's, you actually have to go to New Jersey where there are some old-school Italian bakeries that have been around since the turn of the 20th century. Really, Buono's is superb. The crust is crunchy, hard, and relatively thick. Inside, the bread is dense and chewy - that is how real Italian bread is back in Italy, and this is the closest I've found in New England to what I used to have in New Jersey, and in Italy.

It's good. Consistency is not great though. Some days many of the foods are dry.

2/20/15 my friend is usually so sweet and thinks of me while i am at work and usually buys me the calzones from here. i have to say they are always so delicious! i can not complain one bit about them, but i can and will complain based on the spinach pie i had today, so as i was eating i felt something hard in my mouth, i took it out and it was some kind of a bolt/screw, so being such a good customer and enjoying their food, i thought it was safe to call them and tell them what happened. the woman i spoke to was a peach, very nice and very professional. she advised me to speak to the "owner's brother in law" to discuss what happened, so of course i did. this guy was a complete dick!! as if he didn't believe me, buddy please you can stick those calzone where the sun doesn't shine! i wasnt asking you for my money back (nor did i ask for it back),or asking for anything for free (not that i would ever go back ) i just thought i should tell them so they could be more careful and hopefully it wouldn't happen again because maybe the next person won't be so lucky and god forbid go to swallow their food and have a scrw/bolt get enlarged in their throat, choke, and die!!! unbelieveable!

Simply the best bread around! They have an awesome multigrain bread and they actually have pre-made pizza shells which are awesome to throw in the oven or put on the grill.

I'll go ahead and give this place 1 star, though I've never even been. Ok, this is what happened. I have an event coming up that requires 50-60 cupcakes. I Googled "bakeries in RI", and Buono's came up as a result with a lovely website. Also, they're in Providence to boot!(the event is in Prov. too) So I call on a Fri. morning, I briefly explain that I will need 50-60 choc. & vanilla cupcakes, smallish-to medium sized, for an event in 2 weeks. I am put on hold while she gets the Mgr. After holding for 5 mins., my # is taken, and I'm told to expect a call back. The call never arrives, so I call back Mon. morning. A rather brash woman gets on the phone, and says; "So ya need 5 dozen black and white cupcakes, and you have a problem with the price?" I sez; "No..I need 50-60 choc. and vanilla, and I never discussed price with anyone." she sez; "Why you want black and white, who's gonna eat a black cupcake?! I mean, REALLY, hehehh!" I sez; "Ok, so they're really choc. and vanilla..can you tell me what size they'd be?" she sez; "Not small, but not muffin sized." I sez; "How big are the smalls, er, are they mini sized? I have to fit them in a tray that allows for small to medium sized." She is quiet, then laughs maniacally, & with much sarcasm suggests that I just come in. I never showed up. Eff em'.

My FAVORITE real Italian bakery, of which there are very few left here. Partial to: pizza strips (so much better than the other bakery which shall remain unnamed); all the breads are truly excellent and of great variety; the decadent pistachio biscotti is perfectly dense and has a chewy bite; the pistachio CAKE!!; multigrain pizza shells (OMG!); calzones with spinach, meatballs, more; and the cannolis!! Want pies and cakes for the holidays? order in advance and get ready to stand in line, which goes out the door.

This place is great. It's a small little Italian bakery. The area isnt the greatest, but it's worth a stop inside. I always get the spinach and pepperoni pizza. My wife has tried their desserts and they are very good as well. The lemon tart was a good size and very filling. Their prices are fairly inexpensive as well.

near the old hartford projects, Buono's Bakery is the true definition of a hidden gem. I grew up around here & its one of the few places whose quality has not degenrated over the decades. (it may seem out of the way, but if you're going from silver lake to chalkstone ave/mt. pleasant, just use pettey's ave as a cut-through. at the light where it intersects hartford, Buono's will be directly in front of you.) everything at Buono's is good - the pizza strips, the spinach pies, the coconut custard pies, etc. but this place is all about the BREAD. the crust is PERFECT - hard, crispy, a little blackened, and just a tiny bit chewy. inside the bread is soft, almost tender if you can imagine. buy a loaf UNSLICED (thats important), take it home & enjoy with some softened butter, some quality olive oil, or dip it in some homemade gravy. you will not believe how good it is! I have yet to find a place in the north end or little italy that even comes close. its absolutely the best italian bread this side of the atlantic - a hefty claim, but I stand by it! I personally challenge you to find anything that beats it (and if you do, please let me know!)
