As close to a NY bagel as you are going to get! This is my go to place when I am longing to be back in NY and enjoying a delicious bagel. They are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside and just the perfect size! They also have a ton of flavors and they all come in lowfat (but my standby is usually an egg bagel with lowfat plain and sliced tomato - YUM). I have heard that the quesadillas and other Mexican food is really good too but every time I step inside I always end up walking out with a bagel!

I consider myself pretty well versed in bagels, although I haven't had the pleasure of trying New York bagels yet. So I was excited to duck in to Bagel Gourmet on Thayer when we were walking by after reading so many good things about this place; we picked up six bagels for breakfast the following morning. So I realize the bagels probably would've been better fresh - but still, these bagels were bready and without that characteristic chewy/crunchy bagel crust. I found these bagels terribly disappointing (as did the rest of my family). My suggestion is that if you're looking for good bagels in Providence, go to White Electric on Westminster, or better yet, make the drive to Cranston to go to Rainbow Bakery where White Electric buys their bagels - they have the real deal.

I love BGO. I've come here so many times and always left happy. The breakfast burritos with bacon are amazing. I also love the bagels, the strawberry cream cheese, the quesadillas and the bacon, egg and cheese. There's very little seating inside the place, and very little standing room at crowded times, but it's worth it. Bagel Gourmet Ole is definitely my favorite place on Thayer.

My breakfast burrito hit the spot, but that's because there wasn't much else open. It was a little lackluster with flavor, but maybe 9:00am is a little too early to turn on the spice for that community. Service was really amazing. Very friendly and quick.

Small breakfast burrito? Bagel Gourmet Ole you are genius. Sounds pretty crazy that someone wouldn't have sizes on their burritos but unless you are coming off a rough night, who really needs a large breakfast burrito? Seeing the wide selection of bagels and cream cheeses, I really would like to come back and try some. This is a take out place primarily, very small eating area so don't expect to sit and enjoy a coffee and bagel. However, with quick food, people are moving in and out if you do want to sit down. So until the burrito place across the street (Chipotle) starts to do breakfast, you can count on me going back to Bagel Gourmet...Ole!

Just happened to walk by one morning with an itch for something tasty for breakfast. Saw Ole's chalkboard and a breakfast burrito (small) that I just had to try. Amazing! Can I say that I went back 3 days in a row for this bundle of sausagy flavor explosion? Chock full of tasty toppings and fluffy eggs with a side of "hot" sauce to give it an edge. Ditto on the small space but service is quick and pleasant, the ambiance cozy. What a great find on Thayer.

As far as quick places to go and get breakfast on the go, this Thayer street spot is on the top of my list. I've been frequenting this spot since In Your Ear records and the Million Year Picnic used to be right upstairs (way back in 2005), and I'm happy to report that the quality of food here has been consistent all these years. In the beginning I used to try a variety of different breakfast sandwiches on their house made bagels (all were really great), but once I stumbled upon the sausage breakfast burrito there was no turning back. I crave this thing, like constantly. The flavors of the sausage patty they use mixed with the eggs, black beans, salsa & peppers is an unreal combination. I have no idea how they get so much flavor in something so simple. I return here at least once a month to get my breakfast burrito fix. There is one thing about this place that I have to knock them down a star for... This place is such a happening breakfast place on the weekend (its a HUGE hit with all the college kids in the area) that it gets crazy busy, so busy in fact that its too much for the small staff of four to handle at times. This can often lead to mixed up orders. Twice I've walked out of there in the past two months with what I thought was my go-to sausage breakfast burrito only to return home and find this not the case. Never was the food bad or lacking in quality, but when you go there for a specific craving, getting the wrong item can be pretty upsetting. (I think a simple name system when you order can address this issue). All in all- if you're looking for a quick breakfast fix (whether its a quick bite before work or class, or even a cure for the worst hangover after a long friday or saturday night) I can't recommend this place enough. And if you're a regular and haven't tried the sausage breakfast burrito, do your taste buds a favor next time you stop in and get one, you'll be glad you did!

I'm only going to have half. I don't need all of this fat and all these calories. Just half. Just half. Just three quarters...oops. These bagels are so good. Like, so, so, so good. Chewy, salty, savory, boiled goodness. Plain bagel. Toast it just a little. Get a good schmear on there. Heaven. Fresh, hot, strong coffee, a copy of the Phoenix while I wait, and these guys are as fast and efficient as they come. It's a little hole on Thayer, but it's a quality product.

Bagel Gourmet is a quick no-frills option to breakfast. The people who work here aren't the friendliest and more often than not request you to repeat your order a few times before you get it but over all it wasn't a terrible experience. For those looking for a traditional New York Style bagel... you won't find it here. Still a decent try though.

Half bagel place, half Mexican joint - an interesting and surprisingly good combination. Food is quick and tasty. More importantly, it always tastes fresh. They're pico de gallo is prepared every morning. They have a solid selection of bagels, cream cheese, and beverages. This is more of a take out oriented place. There is a small bar with stools, but they aren't exactly comfortable. The staff is friendly and the shop is clean. My recommendation: have them added some pico de gallo to your egg & cheese bagel.

For months after arriving in Providence, I bounced back and forth between Baja's and Chipotle trying to find a burrito that would measure up to the beloved Anna's Taqueria. (It may not be "authentic," but it's all I've ever known...) Little did I know that the answer was under my nose the entire time: BGO! Although the combo of Mexican food and breakfast may seem a little strange, everything on the menu is fast and comforting. At around $6 without meat and $7 with meat, the breakfast burritos are chock full of scrambled eggs, black beans, and pico de gallo--and all the Mexican dishes come with a little container of smoky homemade salsa. The bagels can be a little bready sometimes, but they're usually satisfyingly chewy and covered with the perfect amount of toppings and cream cheese. And the breakfast sandwiches are a dream on a rainy morning! You can choose the type of cheese you want, but the gooey processed cheese really completes the experience.

A wise man once said, "let's go to bagel gourmet..ole." Since then, the masses have risen from the hallowed halls of pembroke, even Keeney, and the rustic but mostly dilapidated houses from Cushing to Power, to taste the sweet goodness of BGO. Once a common occurrence, now a long-lasting tradition as alumni pour in from across the globe to get their fix. What will it be? A bagel with cream cheese? Perhaps a breakfast burrito? Perhaps a bagel with cream cheese in a burrito. In the end, there is only one question that is left unsolved: why is it a Mexican bagel place?

Although Bagel Gourmet often has a line out the door, don't let that dissuade you from coming in! The staff are quick on their toes and the wait goes by in a flash. I love stopping by here to grab a quick bite before heading off to work. As the name of the restaurant would imply, the bagels are top-notch. I love that there are so many options for sandwiches and that you can get a generously portioned sausage, egg and cheddar for under five bucks. If you can bring yourself to stray from your bagel habit, the breakfast burritos are really something else. They're a little pricier, but they're huge, so I usually only eat half and leave the rest for lunch. Solid way to start the day. I do think the seating here could use an upgrade. There isn't much of it, and since most people are waiting for their order to come up, it's a little packed. I don't really mind, since I come here to grab a bagel and go, but I wouldn't call it a place to sit and chat or study.

As far as bagels go in Providence, this is the best I've found. That's not saying much, because this is not a hotbed of phenomenal breakfast offerings. But they've got your standard flavors and a few cream cheese options, their prices are reasonable, and they're pretty quick. I'm intrigued by the Mexican options, but given the option to choose between a bagel and pretty much any other food I'm always going to go with the bagel. The place is small inside so if you're here at a busy time you probably won't be able to get a seat. While I was here, a lot of people seemed to have called ahead for their orders - so they got in and out very quickly. If you know what you want and are planning to eat at home, that definitely sounds like the way to do it!

  • Becky S.

So I have not tried any bagels here, but they do have the best veggie burritos. They are perfect for lunch on a budget and packed with deliciousness and come with a great spicy sauce. If I recall, last time I went here they don't do debit cards I don't know if that has changed at all, but I guess that is the only negative.

It's been said before but bears repeating. This is as close to a NYC bagel as you are going to get in RI. It's a little hole in the wall on Thayer but the bagels rock. They are not made like the supermarket spritz and bake variety but the authentic boil and bake method. The salmon and cream cheese shmear is excellent too. I pick up a dozen, slice in half and freeze. Definitely a go to spot for bagels.

  • Ryan D.

Best Mexican food on Thayer- and maybe Providence. I'm a big fan of their quesadillas and breakfast burritos, obviously the bagels too. The only downside is that everyone else on College Hill is also a big fan, so the lines get pretty outrageous on weekends. Pro-tip: call ahead and skip the line. Make sure to smirk at the novices waiting for their food.

BGOle has become my go-to breakfast or lunch place at least twice a week since the fall. Between the delicious breakfast burrito, the veggie burrito (the monterey jack cheese is so good!), and egg-and-cheese-on-croissant I always leave feeling happy with my purchase. A new discovery that puts Ole at the top of my list is that one can ask them to add a little Tapatio (or for a small bit of Tapatio on the side) to one's order. Although the salsa that comes with burritos is good, it doesn't have much of a kick. Tapatio makes the veggie burrito delicious, and sometimes a little dangerous to eat without dripping --- just grab extra napkins to be safe!

I lived in Rhode Island for 8 years. I frequented this place throughout undergrad and med school. A native Californian, I know good burritos and this place serves one of the best breakfast burritos ever. Just went back to Providence for my 10-year reunion and was glad to see it still there.

Best place for a breakfast burrito, hands down!! Portions are large so I usually get the small size. So delicious, sometimes just tempted to travel all the way over from the East Side just for this! To note, they only have a smaller counter with maybe 5-6 chairs for sitting, so it does get a little crowded if you're planning on eating here. Most people take their burritos to go. FYI they also have green pistachio muffins. Delish!

Damn good bagels. Wow they are so fresh and heavenly, they make Dunkin Dounut bagels look like dog food. They have so many different types of bagels but the onion and everything are my favorite. Everything has the right about of every ingredient so nothing overpowers, instead everything just works together symbiotically. If the bagels weren't enough the cream cheese is good enough to eat on its own, yes I've done it and you will too, just dip you finger into the little container and taste what I believe is cream cheese euphoria. My office moved from the East side, a mere 5 minute walk from this Bagel Paradise, and I walked the last morning to Bagel Gourmet for my bagel and I have missed it everyday since. Hey Bagel Gourmet, want to open a branch in Pawtucket? Until then I guess I'll have to make a few trips and stock up on bagel goodness.

Providence is lacking in bagel awesomeness; I think Bagel Gourmet is the best around. But even more often, I'm here for the OLE! I've heard through the grapevine that the whole bagels/Mexican food odd combo started at the Brook St. location, when the staff would start cooking *themselves* up some burritos for lunch and customers would catch these incredible smells and peek to the back saying, "whoa! Gimme summa dat!!" And so now we have Mexican served on Brook St. and Bagel Gourmet Ole... There is no better burrito to be had outside of an authentic Mexican restaurant - which means this is the BEST for East Side. And they give you the most joyously tangy miracle sauce on the side. Pick up a Providence Phoenix, pull up a side stool and chill for a few - this isn't a Subway-style affair - they nurture that burrito to life so it takes some time. The staff is friendly and cool. I just wish there was more space for seating - I'll only order to-go here.

Went to get a quick breakfast with a friend. Ordered 2 large Iced coffees, a large breakfast burrito and an egg, cheese and bagel sandwich. When the register showed just under $20 I was shocked. First my friend questioned the cashier and he said "taxes are not shown the menu". Well that didn't make much sense so I then added up what it said on the blackboard menu of what we ordered. 2 large iced coffees at 2.50 each is $5.00, a large breakfast burrito $6.02 and the egg sandwich on a bagel $3.45. so that is $14.47 plus 8% tax which is a total of $15.62 which is already on the high side for what was ordered, not to mention the "LARGE" (16 oz.) Iced coffees looked like mediums as compared to anywhere else. Anyway after adding I approached the cashier myself and questioned the total and his answer was: Those prices that are posted on our menus are the "OLD" prices, we haven't posted the new ones. I said why are the old prices still posted and he said either "I only do what I'm told" or "I only take orders". Not a good answer. just wanted to warn anyone who thinks of going there.

Awesome customer service. I got there at 6am to order a breakfast burrito. The cook told me that they weren't open for another half hour, but he would help me out anyways. :) I always get the bagel with lox spread (cheaper alternative to a lox bagel - bagel with lettuce, tomato, cream cheese, and lox strips).

I'm writing this review solely because I so often crave the bagel sandwiches that sustained me for years on end. I lived on Thayer, above one of the stores so Bagel Gourmet Olé was right across the street. I was a regular. Good customer service -- fast and reliable. Bacon, egg, and cheese on a plain or everything bagel. I'm in heaven. Prices are decent and I will forever love you Bagel Gourmet. Also, yeah not Mexican food. Thank John C. for clearing that one up.

if i have some extra time between classes to grab a bite to eat, chances are i'll duck into this lil place and grab a bagel and coffee. i dont know what coffee they use but it is deliiiicious! ill take it over abp or starbucks coffee any day [i think my wallet thanks me for that, too]. their bagels are fresh and have just the right texture/chewiness. the service is also great - every time i walk in im always happy to be greeted by the same warm and friendly people. beware: if you ask for cream cheese they REALLY get generous...so i usually ask for it on the side. also, they really overdo it with the sugar in their iced coffee when you ask for sugar, so you end up having this thick ring of undissolved sugar at the bottom. just specify "a little sugar" so that you can stir it up yourself.

I've always been a bagel fan ever since my venture to the east coast. Long Island has some delicious bagels and a good friend of mine loves her Jersey bagels. Venturing to Bagel Gourmet Ole I was hoping they had two things: an egg bagel and lox. I was in luck. For under five dollars I got my friend a bagel and I got mine as well. The only downside is I like lox on top of the cream cheese, instead of their lox spread, but nonetheless the bagel was toasted to perfection and reminded me of a snack to enjoy while taking a brisk walk on a east coast winter's day.

Ok, obviously this is not fine dining, since there's hardly anywhere to sit and the menu is pretty limited. But, with that in mind, i LOVE this place!! Bagels AND Mexican food?? Why is this the perfect combination?? I think I go here so often because despite its small size, the menu offers lots of options! If i feel like a giant, hearty quesadilla filled with delicious salsa, meat, etc... where do I go? Bagel Gourmet OLE! When it's early, or I'm hungover, or I'm just plain in the mood for a delicious Sausage Egg & Cheese on a bagel, where do I go? Bagel Gourmet OLE! When it's lunchtime and I want something that's the perfect size and super tasty (ie. their turkey sandwich on an everything bagel, or salmon with veggie cream cheese), where do I go? haha, well you get the point! The people there are always super nice and while the service isn't lightening-fast (because they make it fresh to order. With real eggs, etc!), it's still really easy to pop in and out to pick up a quick lunch! It's definitely a take-out place, but one of the best on Thayer! YUM i think i'll head there tomorrow...

It's okay. Prices are a bit steep for what you're getting. Taste wise I say 3/5 stars. This isn't NYC quality bagels. I highly doubt if you check it out you'll find a seat as I think there are only 4-5 seats in this tiny shop. I think this place tries too hard to be two different things. A Jewish bagel shop and a mexican joint all in one?

    (3)
  • Jake P.

I can still clearly hear the latin radio station which was constantly being played by the gracious employees of Bagel Gourmet Ole (BGO for short). That sound, along with unique juxtaposition of mexican and jewish cuisines are just a few of the things I love about BGO. As a New Yorker attending school in New England i was always obnoxiously quick to point out the culinary deficiencies in the area (pizza, bagels, chinese food). This did not apply to BGO. Their Sausage Egg and Cheese (on a toasted everything bagel) is still among the best I've had and their quesadillas are just as good as those sold in many other mexican restaurants. My only complaints are towards the undersized (but high quality) bagels, which often necessitated a second order, the sometimes subpar nachos, and the lox, which completely sucks. All in all, Bagel Gourmet Ole is still one of the first places I visit whenever I return to Providence.

  • Sara B.

This place has some amazing chicken tacos. The place is small, so it's more of a takeout place then anything else, and it's not fast, because they make everything up to order, but maybe that's why they taste so good. The toppings always seem fresh, and they've got a super sauce. I hear the bagels are good too (always seemed like an odd mix of specialties), but can't vouch for them myself.

    (4)
  • Lauren W.

Definitely the best quesadillas on Thayer Street (possibly the only ones). Gourmet Ole is a place to get-food-and-go since their seating selection accommodates only 4-5 people on a very small table along the wall. The staff is friendly and if you go in a lot (as I do), they'll remember you. Reasonable prices for generous portions.

The people who work here aren't the friendliest and more often than not request you to repeat your order a few times before you get it but over all it wasn't a terrible experience. For those looking for a traditional New York Style bagel... you won't find it here. Still a decent try though.

Delish!

Conversation with cook or owner (no idea): Me: Do you guys cook any real Mexican food? Him: HA! This isn't Mexican food! He knew what I knew!
