Went for a short trip to RI in January and ate here our first night for a late dinner. Our server was very friendly and there was still a small crowd considering the hour. While i wasn't a huge fan of the menu (called 'Red Parrot' for a reason. A lot of the dishes featured a tropical twist.) there were a couple of things that I could choose from. I ordered oysters on the half shell as an app, with a cucumber martini. The oysters were very good and fresh, and paired awesome with the martini! My only complaint is that it would be nice if maybe a mignonette or fresh lemon accompanied them, instead of just horseradish and cocktail sauce. Still, they were a good start. As for my entree, I got the shrimp and scallop scampi. I love scampi, it's one of my absolute favorites, and this place did it right. I've had some pretty lousy scampi's but this scampi is definitely one of the best I've eaten at a restaurant. Probably better than the scampi I cook at home. It was the perfect combo of lemon, wine and garlic....you really can't go wrong. The decor is beautiful. I'd definitely return.

Do you want to know the insane part? No matter how many times I am sorely disappointed in the service at Red Parrot... we go back. I've been to Red Parrot more than I've been any other place in Newport. The first time I went, I was amazed at their menu. It seems like it never ends. Right before the start of the season, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, service was speedy and pleasant. I had a salad and a cocktail that were expensive, but tasty. That was the last time I've been happy there. I'm always waiting 30 minutes for my check. I'm always having to do choreographed dance number to get the bartender's attention. I'm always having to ask where my water is that I ordered before my beer. If you don't mind waiting and a bit of attitude from the waitstaff, get the Calamari pizza. I don't know how the Calamari stays crispy, even the day after, but it does! Skip the greek salad which tasted like deep-salted salad greens. The Red Parrot Amber isn't worth trying, but the beer selection has enough depth that you have other options.

I greatly enjoyed my meal at the Red Parrot. It was delicious. The tuna was fresh and delicious and the coconut rice was impeccable. Highly recommend if you are in Newport.

Don't get sucked into this tourist trap! Just because they have like 60 items on the menu, doesn't mean the food is any good. Lousy service; food tasted liked it have just been microwaved; over priced! There are a ton of other restaurants in the area that are worth checking out. Go somewhere else!

My place to eat when I'm in Newport. Love the clam chowder and the Godzilla will make you roar. Very crowded during the summer months but it's worth the wait. Would definitely recommend, keep in mind this isn't a white cloth restaurant so don't expect that. If you want to eat and drink in a cool environment this is the place

Perfectly serviceable, kinda touristy. The menu is a like a book, and I always feel like a restaurant that can make 100 different things probably doesn't do any one thing particularly well. That's the case at the Red Parrot. Nothing is blow-you-away delicious, but the food is fine. Some ridiculous drinks, and it can get kind of loud and rowdy, but in a pinch it's a fine place to eat. Best in Newport? Not by a long shot.

Red Parrot keep popping up as I was searching for a place to eat lunch in Newport so my husband and I decided to give it a try. Since the restaurant is centrally located, free parking is hard to come by, so prepare to pay for parking. There were a lot of people inside but the place is large so we didn't have to wait for our table, which was a plus. On the flipside of that, since the place can accommodate a lot of people, it is pretty loud and there isn't much privacy because the tables are close to one another. You can easily hear conversations taking place at the neighboring tables. The service was pleasant but pretty unremarkable. It was obvious that the place handles a large volume of tourists and that the goal is to get people in and out quickly. The food was a mixed experience. My crab cakes were good but the fries that I ordered on the side were bad. They tasted like they were previously frozen and weren't fully cooked. My husband liked his swordfish but didn't care for the green beans and the mashed potatoes that came with it because they lacked flavor. If the service was more personable and the food was more consistent in quality (consistently good, that is), this place would be much better.

The binder menu chock full of page protectors a la 5th grade should have been our first sign to exit the building. The lackluster service and strange outfits (black shirt with a tie and shorts, wtf?) could have been another indication to run for the hills. Nevertheless, after spending the last 2.5 hours climbing along the Cliff Walk in extreme heat, our choices for dining in Newport were limited. Drenched in sweat and dressed in our not so fine attire and wanting a cold drink, this was our only immediate option. The menu had a lot of options, but nothing stood out to me. It was reminiscent of The Cheesecake Factory menu that goes on and on, but nothing is really appealing at all. We ordered the nachos to start, I ordered chicken and steak fajitas,my fiancé ordered fish and chips and my sister ordered a chicken sandwich. The nachos came quickly with about a cup of sour cream dumped on top. Really?! Who wants a huge mouthful of sour cream? Not me! Besides that, they were decent. The food arrived quickly, yet left us wishing we dined elsewhere. My fajita meat, onions and peppers were floating in a disgusting amount of oil. Why the food would even be cooked in this amount of oil is beyond me, but being served like that literally turned my stomach. Definitely made Chili's look like fine dining. My fiancé was equally disgusted with his fish and chips noting it was definitely frozen and tasted mushy. Blech! My sister's sandwich looked a mess and she was equally as disappointed. Horrid food, so-so service and a rip-off! Keep walking...past this restaurant!

I love this place. My family has a timeshare in Newport that we come to every year and we eat at red parrot at least twice. We don't even like to go other places because everything there is so good and you know what to expect. Prices are very reasonable. Lobster blt is very good as well as the sweet fries with the caribbean dipping sauce. SOOO good. They make all their dipping sauces themselves and they are amazing. Everything I've ordered there has been really good. It's an awesome place, don't know how it only has 3 stars!

We love the Red Parrot! We come to Newport a couple times a year and frequently eat here because it's consistently good. It's not phenomenal, but we always have good service and we've never had bad food. I get the crab cake sandwich with sriracha mayo, and it's very good! The sangria is good but pricey ($10 a glass) my husband had the French dip sandwich and enjoyed it. Service was prompt and friendly. Just a little on the pricey side, but that's generally what you find in Newport.

I've always heard good things about the Red Parrot but finally got the chance to visit last weekend to judge it for myself! I visited with a few girlfriends on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. There was no wait, which initially surprised me until I realized that this place is enormous - three floors! We went all the way up to the top which was nice because you could enjoy a beautiful view of Newport and the ocean from up there! We ordered some tasty frozen cocktails to start - not cheap but delicious and quite large - so I think you get what you pay for. I had the Mango Mango Colada which I'd definitely get again. Very refreshing and smooth, with just the right kick of booze. For lunch, I had a really hard time deciding what to get. The menu is page after page of things that sounded more and more delicious! I settled on the coconut shrimp wrap, and I am very happy with my decision (although I had a LITTLE bit of buyer's remorse when I saw my friends' "Monsta Lobsta BLT"!!) The portions were all good sized and prices were fair for Newport. I can't wait to go back and try more things at the Red Parrot!

My Fiancé became sick from the Lobster Bisque. The stuffed mushrooms were not like anything I have seen before. Instead of small mushrooms with stuffing, it was a large burger sized portobello mushroom cut into four pieces with cheese put on top. It tasted like greasy rubber. This is my first negative review, but we both were very dissatisfied. One star for good service.

Jerk chicken wings were off the hook! I make my own jerk sauce, so I know what goes into them. Thyme and nutmeg were prevalent. Highly recommended. Good draft beer, good location. Give her a try. Get those wings and a beer. You are welcome.

Swedish Fish drink is my favorite! Frothy pink greatness. This is one of my favorite places to go for comfort food. I honestly only get the nachos (unless there is a good Facebook Deal) and then a salad because they drench the tortilla chips in the classic toppings so it makes me feel better to get some greens in there. Remember to 'Like" them on Facebook to get some special outrageously cheap. deals! With the "password of the day" you can get things like their Sicilian pasta or Mahi-Mahi Sandwich for $0.99 ! Just for saying something like, "Luke, I am your father!" and buying a regular priced beverage! WOO!!

Was up here with my buddy Isaac and we enjoyed a nice non-romantic dinner by the water - and when I mean by the water I say that because this place is not on the water, but near it. First off, having to climb four flights to get to an available table was....breathtaking - literally I couldn't breathe. I'm so out of shape. I was then underwhelmed by the flatbread and the fact that they forgot my french martini. The french martini was good and so was whatever Isaac got. Isaac got something he liked, but the winner was my fish - I had the yellowtail sole and it was unbelievable. The only thing I didn't like wast he sauteed spinach, which was too oily. The key to good sauteed spinish is you boil it in water first, then you put in oil - theirs definately tasted like they put it directly in the oil. I did like this place though and I would go back if I were in the neighborhood.

The Red Parrot is a place that intrigued me while down in Newport RI with my father. The place stuck out to us because of the logo and the location. The place has multiple levels in it which definitely helps with crowd control. We got in and the place is PACKED. It surprised me because it is Newport in late fall so I did nor expect many people there at all. However, it was a Saturday Night so sort of expected. We got our marker to wait. The wait system is very organized with the hostess writing down names and taking an ID of the person holding the table. It was very different. The good part while waiting was the bar right on the same level. I was excited. My step mom got a Margarita and it was very strong for my liking. I got a Shipyard Pumpkin ale which was very good and crisp. A unique thing that they had on this beer was cinnamon and sugar on the rim. My god that was good and sweet. Finally we got to our seats after a 45 minute wait. We waited for a while until a waiter fetched a waiter for us. We ordered a very good seafood stuffing with mushrooms are the base. That was so good and I recommend it for an appetizer there. I ordered the swordfish Mediterranean. The swordfish was cooked very well and it had a blackened taste which was nice and crisp. Also they had scallops and vegetables which were cooked well. The place is very pricey but hey it is Newport. I do recommend not going on a Saturday Night in the middle of the fall. Also this dinner is a place you go every once in a while. I recommend it strongly.

Red Parrot has been my favorite stop in Newport for a while now. Food is tasty, portions are huge and service is reasonably fast. Try their seafood pasta, mussel soup or casadias. Drinks and beer selection is good. You'll notice that the menu selection is so huge that it's hard to decide! Overall, a consistent experience and great value for money in an overpriced Newport.

Food - terrible. Lobster roll was on a hot dog type roll and the lobster was not fresh tasting. Oysters were gritty and not fresh. Go somewhere else. Service was lacking

I think the Red Parrot is fantastic! I've been there twice over the last six months. The place is always packed. I usually order their pizza; crust is tasty and delicate and toppings are delicious. On different visits, my wife has ordered burgers and their fish and chips--- she was impressed by all her meals there. Flourless chocolate cake is delicious. Service is pleasant and attentive.

2 words: SHARK BITES!!! you have to try them! This place is huge and serves up just as big a menu. Food was great! Drinks were so-so! Service was ehh... Sounds like it could have been worse. I was there on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy. Anyway, try the shark bites! and the shrimp/scallop scampi was pretty amazing!

Went here one night before going out to the bars. Awesome place to go with a large party as not many other restaurants can quickly accommodate a walk in group of 10 people. Food selection was perfect as we all got a bunch of plates to pick at while we tried the variety of drinks. LOTS of options! Everything was sooo good! Lobster nachos are to DIE for. Steamers and the calamari were also very tasty and came in large portions. I definitely recommend this place. Service was also great as the bartender was nice and the server was very attentive and personable.

We visited on a very hot evening in June 2013. The restaurant was not air conditioned, but the windows were open for some flow of air. The menu is huge and is presented in page protectors in a three-ring binder. The menu book was clearly dirty, which always kind of grosses me out. Neither of us were really into the menu items. We actually didn't end up eating at The Red Parrot, simply because it was a bit too hot and even a window seat on the 2nd floor wasn't comfortable because the sun was shining right in our faces. In the time we were there, which was around 15-minutes, we were given water, but didn't see our waitress again.

I'm usually not a fan of a restaurant with a lot of things on the menu but my dish was delicious- the seafood Alfredo! The seafood tasted very fresh and I would definitely recommend the dish.

  • Amanda D.

The food was very good. No wait time for a table. A nice place to take out-of-town guests. Third time being there in 2 years. Cons; service was a bit lackluster, waitress seemed to be throughly unamazed to be there. Hint: if ya don't enjoy waitressing, find another job or take the night off. (I still tipped 20% in hopes it would cheer the little bumble bee up...) The food was somewhat expensive. It can be a bit loud, so if you're looking for peace, quiet, and ambiance, head elsewhere.

At first glance, this place kind of felt like a mill, like they were just trying to get as many customers in and out as possible. The hostesses were kind of short, they told us it would be a 20-minute wait so we went and got a drink at the bar, and then they had a table ready for us within 5 minutes, before we even had a drinks. But once we were seated our waiter was great. The food was good, nothing spectacular but solid, the wait wasn't long, and we didn't feel rushed at all. The price was reasonable too, $70 for three drinks, one app and two huge meals. This place is definitely a good options if you don't have reservations and want something easy downtown Newport.

Sat upstairs at the bar and the bartender was drinking his beer and totally ignoring us. We waited 20 minutes to get a drink!! Ridiculous

First time eating in Newport. The meal was delicious and inexpensive for a seafood spot. There was a wait but the food was worth it. We started with the lobster nachos which were AWESOME. My aunt had the sole and lobster and loved it. Our friend had the seafood pasta which was filled with scallops and shrimp and had lots of filling. I had my first full lobster which was huge for the price. The waitress was even nice enough to get some gloves and help me crack the claws. Drinks were also a hit!!

Came here on a Sunday night, one of the few places that actually has the kitchen open past 9PM. Quickly got a table without any wait. The food was amazing, now the drinks are another story. So if you're offering a full bar, please have someone who actually knows how to make a simple drink as Goose Tonic, otherwise just stick with Beer.

A bit disappointed with this place.. My and my boyfriend had decided to get burgers and a clam chowder to try.. The clam chowder was excellent.. But tha burgers fell apart as we ate them.. The bread just crumbled in ur hand and I had to sit there and cut up my burger to eat it.. I was so looking forward to this place.. I thought it was tha same as the one on nanatasket beach in Massachusetts.,

Server was good and polite. It was a very busy place and great atmosphere. But the food was disappointing. It had no favor and it was kind of cold. Really over price food for below quality cooking.

  • Colleen D.

My husband and I were really disappointed with the Red Parrot Restaurant. I think that the biggest reason why we disliked it here is because we were rushed. We ordered our drinks, and then ordered our clam chowder. We weren't ready to order for dinner- so the girl "gave us a few minutes" or so we thought. Within 90 seconds of ordering the soup and drinks, the waitress was at our table with our soup and drinks together. We still had our menus in hand and hadn't made a decision in regards to dinner. When I go to a restaurant, I want at least a chance to to look over the menu. I like to enjoy a drink before I start eating as well. We were at a small table so we had to juggle the soup, drinks and menu. It sucked. I ordered the stuffed shrimp- it tasted primarily like bread crumbs. So my final reason for disliking my experience here is that it is so loud!! There was a drunk girl at the bar, and her voice carried throughout the whole establishment. She was so annoying, and again this ruined my dinner...it was early, too...around 730... This place made me cranky. If you are spending a weekend in Newport like we did- don't go here. It's not a cheap place either. It was about 45 per person, and it wasn't worth half of that.

Cool place, cool atmosphere.... food was greasy though..... but fun place to go and not pricey - just don't like the greasy ness of the food - more like pub food

One of my very favorite places ever. I love the location (parking is tough though - I suggest parking in the Brick Marketplace and walking, it's not far). My husband and I found ourselves kid-free for the afternoon so we headed down to Newport for some adult time. I hadn't been to TRP in years and I was dying to go back. We had to wait a bit for a table but the place was packed so that wasn't a big deal. We ordered a couple of drinks and our server was very pleasant. I was so happy to see my favorite appetizer (shark bites - YUM) was still on the menu but my favorite meal (Caribbean chicken sandwich) was gone. We ordered the shark and the calamari to start. My husband took one bite of the shark and said "Why haven't we been here before?!?" The appetizers were delicious and served in generous portions. Our meals were equally generous portions and were DELICIOUS. Another table ordered a gigantic martini with different kinds of rum and fruit (one giant drink split between four people, sort of like a scorpion bowl) we ordered one, too - it looked so so good. When ours came, it was a different color so I inquired why. The server told us the one he brought us was made with vodka, not rum. I was a little bummed out (I HATE vodka, which is why we ordered a rum drink) but we decided to keep it. It really was very tasty and the fruit garnishes were fresh and sweet. It's a pricey place so not one we can go to often, but it's 100% worth the splurge.

After reading the reviews, I was a little concerned. We got there at about 7 and didn't have to wait in line at all. Table for 2 was available right near the window. We ordered the bruchetta and it was awesome. I knew, based on the flavors, that we were in good hands. I ordered the mandarin coconut chicken which was spot on. Loved it. Girlfriend had the mahi mahi and she said it was great as well. I am a dessert person, but sadly, I was full. Very full. So we had to skip it. I will definitely return as that chocolate peanut butter dessert was calling for me!

solid service. cool 3 story restaurant! casual atmosphere. gets rather noisy. a more affordable alternative compared to the surrounding restaurants along the pier. reminds me of a TGI Fridays except larger & with seafood. Generous portions. my parents & i only ordered two appetizers and one soup, yet we left quite satisfied & unable to order dessert (admittedly, weve been munching all day). + Seafood Stuffed Caps: Mushrooms baked with crabmeat stuffing with horseradish sauce. Surprisingly delicious. though the horseradish sauce was odd. we asked for regular horseradish after. + Lobster Nachos. interesting. ordered it more out of curiosity than anything else. pretty yum. & id recommend it for anyone who hasnt tried it. i think i prefer my nachos without lobster - definitely prefer them steamed or baked. - Clam Chowder. ehhh. too much soup, cream, and butter. too little everything else. good spot for casual dinner. wouldn't select it for date night or a intimate celebration. perfect for a group of friends - especially if youre looking to grab a drink or two.

Best meal we had in Rhode Island! Our server was so nice and informative- actually helped us order instead of telling us everything was good. The mushroom quesadilla was incredible. The French onion and clam soups were the best! And the steak with Gorgonzola was really good too.

I love The Red Parrot. They have a great (and huge) menu and the staff is great, too. The only complaint I have is that you can't wait TV at the bar because all the TVs show are fish swimming. It's really weird. What kind of bar doesn't let their patrons watch TV?

I thought this place was going to be a standard generic tourist dinner spot. Boy was I wrong. The place is massive, it has three floors (!!!) of dining space. We were seated instantly and had a very friendly waitress. We had the nachos which were insane! Huge portion covered in all the fixins. For dinner I had the coconut mahi mahi. I could eat that dish for every meal of the day. It was rich yet light, savory and sweet, and completely hit the spot. Prices were totally reasonable, the whole place was clean, the menu is MASSIVE, and the ambiance was really cool. Would go back for sure!

We stumbled upon this place by accident. I am in my 30's and was with my parents who are in their 60's. Having spent the day in Newport shopping and walking around we wanted a casual, budget-friendly place for seafood. After asking the lady at the Newport Visitors center for a recommendation we spent 20 minutes getting lost as we wandered around looking for a place. We finally found this place and based on the large menu-board posted outside decided to venture in. At this point it is clear we wish we had turned around. Food was nothing more than adequate; if not over-priced. Service was pretty horrendous as well. Waitress never bothered to introduce herself to us and clearly did not understand the entire menu, as we asked several questions, and she had very few answers. The main thing that bothered us is when we asked specifically on three occasions if the "Bucket of steamed clams" was steamers (with the long necks) or littlenecks (with no neck), she assured us they were steamers as we wanted. When it arrived it was clearly littlenecks. Not sure if she didn't know what we wanted or simply lied to us... In either case it pretty much ruined our meal. My mom ordered the Lobster BLT, which was a big let-down. Lobster had a strange and gross seasoning on it, the lettuce outnumbered everything else and there was only about half a slice of bacon on it. Not exactly a BLT. My clam chowder was okay for under $7, but had almost no clams in it and was too milky for my taste. The shrimp cocktail was fine, if not overpriced for four shrimp. My dad's French Onion soup was okay, but had too much salt in it. Overall, this place is clearly a tourist trap and quality is not their aim here. They should consider consolidating the menu, retraining the staff to be more friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. It's okay but not worth the price, in my opinion.

I loved the atmosphere - a converted meat packing factory with lots of wood beams and character situated conveniently close to the waterfront and downtown tourist area. The service was fantastic. Even though we arrived after a concert and the place was packed, our waiter (and the kitchen) kept the pace going and our order in tact. Based on a previous review, I ordered the Red Parrot Ale and enjoyed it. Our meal consisted of a variety of starters. The good choices were calamari, fried green tomatoes, and clam chowder. The bad choice was lobster pizza - nice lobster flavor but I didn't care much for the bland cheese they used. I would choose this restaurant again if i was in the area.

Fantastic! Great location in downtown, Newport. Appeared as a popular and lively restaurant with a bar. Friendly welcoming staff and variety of menu selections. We had cheesy quesadillas baked with sweet lobster, shark steak, and filling clam chowder. First time trying shark steak - not bad at all! Got there super hungry and left super happy. : )

Came here with some friends because we were in the area. Restaurant is really big suprisingly. I think it had 3 levels. Parking is really hard to find so I parked by the neighborhood and walked over. The wait was about 20min for a Friday night which wasn't too bad. I ordered their cheeseburger. Food was just average nothing really outstanding. My burger came out medium just how I ordered it. Fries were crispy and delicious. However, service was definitely lacking. Took the waitress like 15min to get the bill and another 15min to get it back to us with the credit cards...Wth!! Move faster yo!

This place on a Saturday night was unbearably loud. It seemed as though everyone was screaming to be heard. I moved from one table to another seeking an area that was a little quieter. I would compare the atmosphere to a bar when there is a major sporting competition. My wife ordered the fillet of sole with lobster but it was very salty. I ordered the barbeque baby back ribs which were just OK, nothing to rave about.

I think the Red Parrot is consistent in the quality of the food they serve and in the restaurant's customer service. During the busy season (which is basically 3/4 of the year), this restaurant can get packed, and you can expect to wait. My husband and I stopped by most recently on a Saturday evening in March and were seated immediately. Our server seamed very knowledgeable about the menu items and offered great recommendations. I ordered the crab cake sandwich, which comprised of a large crab cake patty (with plentiful crab meat, not batter) in a whole wheat roll. It was also accompanied by the the signature Red Parrot sweet potato fries, which are always cooked to perfection with light salt. My husband ordered the jerk chicken wrap, which he thought was delicious. It was accompanied by your choice of mango salsa and chips or fries. The food isn't out of this world, but I do recommend stopping by the Red Parrot with family or friends who are visiting Newport.

Great atmosphere. Seated after only ten minutes even though was packed for lunch. Ordered the clams mussels and shrimp in a rich tomato broth. Soooo delicious!! Came with a piece of crusty garlic bread. It was definitely rich with olive oil and butter but I am not complaining one bit. All it needed was some crab and halibut and it would have been the best cioppino I ever had. Definately on my radar for dinner when I am back in town.

The most expensive bad meal we've ever had. The oysters has no taste and were slightly dried out. The lobster bisque didn't have any lobster - just blended and not at all fresh. The rasta pasta tasted like something out of TGI Fridays - butter and reheated ingredients. The veggies didnt taste fresh, the pasta tasted bitter. The shrimp were not fresh. It's a total tourist trap and sadly we fell for it.

My daughter and I spent the day at the mansions and I told her about the Red Parrot asi had remembered it being quite wonderful! Our waiter was very friendly and quite attentive. He brought my daughter a new full water glass every time it was empty. We started with Thai spring rolls which were quite delicious! Much better though when dipped in the chili sauce!!! I ordered the Stoli Doli to drink...a pineapple infused vodka on the rocks. Although it was quite yummy, I really barely tasted the vodka? It didn't say it was mixed with anything though so I was expecting a stronger drink! Still quite yummy! For dinner my daughter had the coconut Mahi Mahi with seafood stuffing. She thought it was fabulous! I had a small bite and it was delicious but I thought the stuffing was a little on the doughy side. I order the lobster and sole. It really was yummy and it's hard for me to say for sure, but I thought it was really salty. Mind you, this is coming from someone who NEVER salts anything! My only other suggestion is to jazz up the rice on the side.... I got a huge portion of plain white rice that I ate after mixing with the sauce on the fish. I would think they could find a more interesting side to go with this???? Overall, an enjoyable meal and a great time!

Went here for dinner and drinks around 6-630. We got sat right away & had a nice table next to the opened window & got our drink orders in. We got the classic sangria and parrot punch- both great. For dinner we had the scallops entree & grilled chicken entree. It was all delicious & service was awesome. Our waitress was very nice & friendly. Will definitely be back again.

Huge menu, blah service, Newport prices. Go here for convenience if you're too cold to walk 4 blocks up or down Thames. The food is good, but the rest of the experience can leave you wanting more. The avocado burger is a fine, but safe choice. Burger appeared to be frozen, but the veggies were very fresh and the bun was legit. Typical American fare. The lobster nachos are a bit more unique. They were in a heavier creme sauce topped with lots of cheese. TRP does pass the grade on nacho-making construction - all chips touched the queso. With a glass of white wine, it was a nice blend. Newport resident with a diner's card? I recommend using it on a lunch (Su-Th only). Then you'll know if you're a Red Parrot type w/o breaking the bank.

After quite a few hours at the International Tennis Hall of Fame we decided to walk over to the Red Parrot this past 4th of July. It was a few hours after lunch so we got a seat almost in the window which allowed us to watch the crowd and get lost in the Newport state of mind. I ordered a Red Parrot margarita and we started our meal with the flat bread which was amazing. Our main meal consisted of a lobster BLT and a calamari caesar salad. You can't go to Newport, or any coastal town for that matter, and not get seafood. We had a fantastic meal and would absolutely come back here again.

My husband and I have been to the Red Parrot 3-4 times over the past 10 years, and we never leave disappointed! Today, a Sunday at 1:00pm, the place was packed, and guess what? The service was superb, regardless! Fast, friendly and attentive. I had the lobster bisque and my husband had clam chowder. Both were delicious and a little bit unique-tasting from other bisques and chowders that we've had elsewhere. The portions were large and I couldn't finish my bisque. For the entree I had the lobster ravioli and did NOT expect so much lobster to be in the sauce! Abundant lobster, delightful sundried tomato sauce and half of it had to come home with me. The taste was so good that I didn't even feel the need to add parmesan cheese. My husband had surf and turf which consisted of a filet mignon topped with lobster. His filet was cooked perfectly and there was, again, more lobster than expected! His entree came with nice, fresh green beans and a not-so-bland mashed potato (it was probably laced with a lot of butter). Our waitress (Vanessa, I think), was so friendly, and she checked up on us in a very timely manner after the soup and then again after the entrees. The bus "boys" helped as well - they promptly cleared our plates when finished. We didn't have to wait long for the check. Again, the service was excellent given such a large crowd. Even other servers and the hostesses wished us well as we left. The menu selection is vast and always delicious Excellent location Excellent wait staff A little bit pricey for some items but not over-the-top Great drink menu Red Parrot nailed it!

Thought the food was great! Our first dining out in the Newport area which will be our hone for a few years. I thought their menu was huge maybe to big to try and decide what to eat, but really accommodated anyone. The pricing was a bit high but it is Newport! I highly recommend you go just once you won't be disappointed. AAAAA+++++++++

I was in town for my friend's son's graduation from the Naval Academy Preparatory School and we went here for lunch after the ceremony. The service was extremely slow!!! My frozen margarita tasted liked a water-downed icee with no flavor at all. The seared scallops were good but were served with sautéed spinach over a huge bed of white rice and some sort of duck sauce which wasn't stated in the menu description so it wasn't quite what I expected. Overall, the menu is all over the place, the food was mediocre, and the service definitely left more to be desired. I wouldn't make a return visit if ever in Newport again.

So we were looking fora bar. A lot of places were packed and a lot of places were empty. This place was empty. We were thinking it would pick up a little later but it actually got emptier. Two nights I passed this place and though there were bouncers at the door looking ready for action there was nothing going on. I didn't eat here. We just sat at the bar for a drink. The hockey game was on. The music was low and very mellow and I was almost bored to tears. This place defiantly is missing out on a huge opportunity to make some serious money in this town, great location.

My fiance and I enjoyed a late lunch here in the off-season (November). Despite the "ok" reviews, it was too chilly to walk to the other end of Thames and thought, "how bad could it be?" We were pleasantly surprised, yes the menu looks old and similar to that of the cheesecake factory, but there was something for everyone. If i had children to feed, this would be a good place to bring them. We ordered salad, chowder and two appetizers (buffalo calamari and the shark bites). Everything came out quickly and was good, given our expectations. While I wouldn't recommend this place being your special dinner out during a weekend rendezvous here, if you're starving and need a light lunch to hold you over, this is a great spot for it.

With so many other great places in the area, there is no need to waste your time here. The service was slow, the food and drinks were mediocre at best, and the management was quite rude.

Can you be packed in super tight and not be able to move when it is busy? Yes. Does everything cost at least $5 more than it should? Yes. Do I still go to the Red Parrot? Yes. As others have mentioned both the food menu and drink menu are huge and there is something for everyone. Most of the time the service is good. I've never had issues with the food here either. Today we had a quesadilla appetizer and I had a burger and my husband had the fish and chips. No complaints on the food. My only complaint is that it was so busy and the front area near the windows is packed so tight that the woman sitting behind me and I kept banging chairs.

My sister and I stopped by the Red Parrot just for some hearty New England soups... We were greeted by a very friendly hostess and server throughout the entire experience. They were kind enough to give us this private area leaning towards the window so that we could people watch. The service was very fast, as we were able to get our food within a matter of 2 to 3 minutes. The ambiance is pretty much what you expect of a dock area restaurant in a high end tourist area - nautical wood feel in a brick building. The only awkward part of it was that there was a modern chic sofa in the middle of varnished old wood. Now down to the food! - Okay the weirdest thing about this place is that the menu is about the size of a Moby Dick Novel. I practically felt like I could read through Moby Dick in the time I could to review the menu. We kind of knew what we wanted so we didn't even look through the menu and just talked to the lady instead. On the bright side, there are a A LOT OF OPTIONS, so there is a little bit of something for everyone. Our soups were however very good!!! I had New England Clam chowder - it tasted every bit as award winning as advertised. The lobster bique was still pretty good, bust nothing too special! So bottom line... come for the amazing service, novel of a menu, tasty food at a average price for a vacation area like Newport.

The Red Parrot in Newport, Rhode Island seems like a hot spot for both regulars and out-of-towners. With a menu the size of one in a Jersey greasy spoon diner, you are bound to find something to eat and maybe even enjoy. The food was not all that great, though you can tell the freshness of many of the ingredients. To me, Red Parrot just fits into a category of mass production and a chain restaurant, even though it is not. So I would not really go looking for fine dining, but rather an easy meal. It was a loud Friday night and pretty late during peak season, so the crowd was loud and rowdy. Many tables were full with groups, drinking and getting ready to go out, or duos on dates, feeling awkward in the loud atmosphere. This is all normal, but some of the service was kind of spotty and put me off initially. The hostess on the first floor was less than friendly, and did not even speak a full sentence to my date and me. The second hostess, was so stand-offish and hardly made eye contact. Both encounters left a bad taste in my mouth. Our server, however was pretty attentive and understanding. He answered our questions and was willing to give opinions. The food came out eerily quickly, which likens the Red Parrot to more chain restaurants. But the food was hot and decently prepared. The dessert however, took forever. We waited for a while with no sign of our dessert. When our server finally came with our dessert (he had already refilled our water glasses more than once and asked if we wanted drinks), he said he was really not happy about the wait time, so he took the dessert off the bill. That was really nice of him, and it was good to know someone working in the restaurant had some costumer service savvy. Even though I might, in the future, visit Newport again, I do not think I would return to the Red Parrot for a full meal. Maybe for drinks and an appetizer, but to me the food was not worth some of the attitude and sheer volume

"A Tasty Tourist Trap" by Josh K. Lobster Nachos, Lobster stuffed Steak, Lobster BLT, Lobster Pizza, Lobster Ravioli, Lobster Scampi, Lobster Bisque, Lobster Martini, Lobster Quesadillas and chase it down with a pretty well-muddled Mojito, a pint of Newport Storm's Red Parrot Amber Ale and/or a decently mixed Dark and Stormy. I mean they have Lobster Nachos and Lobster stuffed steak! There is a distinct lack of class, it's over priced, loud and crowded, but service was reasonably friendly and efficient, the bartenders competent, and we ate and drank quite well. A tourist trap no doubt, but with that said, we had a whole lot of fun here. When placed in the center of Thames Street on Labor Day, let's just say there are far worse touristy restaurants to be found than the Red Parrot.

Really great service from a very friendly waiter named Greg. The lobster nachos were very good! We ate on the 2nd floor which smelled like paint thinner which was too bad because the 1st floor smelled like garlic and butter goodness. Our only real complaint was the horrendous music: blasting awful smooth 80s jazz straight from Skin-a-max movie. Made us want to run out of the restaurant.

Tourist trap, so many other places to eat around this area. Not quite sure why this place is still in business. I've been to this restaurant a total of 2 times in a span of 5 years and both times were not only disappointing but I believe I got some mild food poisoning on my last occasion here. I usually go for the burgers and steaks and both are awful and flavorless here. They have like a 20 page menu which should set alarms in your head saying the food is average. I would suggest going to Brick Alley, midtown oyster bar or even Mcdonalds, rather than Red Parrot.

Girls day landed us at the Red Parrot for lunch. My whole family is from Newport, but I rarely get to enjoy the local restaurants. I ordered an Oreo Mudslide and the Monsta Lobsta BLT. The Oreo Mudslide was delicious. Piled with whip cream and an oreo to boot, it was dessert in a glass. Not to strong, not weak - just right. A little pricey, be prepared to shell out a $10 bill on that alone my friends. The Lobster BLT was delicious! Lobster was piled high and falling out the sides of the roll, not sure of the bread but it was yummy! The bacon was just like i like it and they served a spicy mayo spread on the side. I ate the entire sandwich, the sweet lobster, salty bacon and spicy mayo sauce were just a dynamite combo. I can't wait to get another one. The sandwich was served with sweet potato fries. The fries were a little on the cold side, but that didn't really bother me. They were still delicious, not greasy at all! 3 floors - huge restaurant. Definitely a great stop - menu is huge and i could have easily ordered everything.

The Red Parrot is kind of Newport's version of the Cheesecake Factory: large, lots of drink options, and a varied menu. It was a good place to drop in for lunch on our first day of vacation when we were fiending for sustenance. Decent beer selection includes a Newport ale of some sort, and there's also an extensive frozen drink menu. Expect to find salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, and fish entrees on the menu. I went for the crab cake sandwich, and my dining companion enjoyed some french onion soup(looked realllly cheesy) and a side salad. Food was good, and this is probably a good family type place too. I wouldn't seek it out, but would drop in if I had a large group of people in tow.

My fiancée and I usually stop in for lunch when we head up to Newport for a day or two. Food is always very good to excellent. I am not one to knock a good restaurant for a rare case of bad service as everyone has the occasional bad day or maybe their first day. Every time we stop in there is usually, at most a 15 min wait, but never ends up being that long. The tables are set nice with plenty of space and if we don't feel like waiting the is a bar on the first and second floor! Always a good stop for lunch/dinner when in the area. Prices are not bad and we have never been disappointed or left feeling like we wasted our money

I ate there a few nights ago. Chowder was eh. The Surf and Turf was AMAZING. The steak was cooked to perfection and it was smothered in lobster. Service was great too. I would definitely come back.

On a whim decided to eat here. We had the shrimp and scallops scampi and a the lobster ravioli + red parrot's amber ale. The shrimps and scallops were cooked perfectly. The ravioli was tasty but could have used more sauce. Beer was good too. The menu is very late, which made me worry, but the stuff we had was good.

The Red Parrot is big, loud, and promises a good time--but the food is average and the service is just awful. I have only been to this establishment once, but in our party, we tried some burgers, some pizza, and some fish--all of which were decent, but definitely not as satisfying as expected given the location of this restaurant and its promising menu. Now let's talk about service. There were only 2 waitresses for the ENTIRE restaurant. Granted, we went on a weeknight evening (in the summertime), so perhaps it's not a "peak hour" for the management to overload the wait staff. But these ladies were working their buns off and we still didn't get our orders right. I had to ask for sweetener 3 times for my iced tea--and instead of getting Splenda, I got real sugar. Our drinks were never refilled. Someone asked for ranch dressing and it just never came. Someone ordered a veggie burger and got meat. Now I feel really bad for the wait staff--I really do--because this was not their fault. Management really needs to think twice about their service needs during the busy summer months in a summer town like Newport. Had the service been better, the food may have warranted a 3 star review. Average, but nothing special.

A Saturday night in August and it was not very busy. But we had the worst, slowest service ever. And not just our server, other tables had to get up and look for their server! Because It was not busy, I felt there was no need for an order of wings to take over a half hour to arrive. They were tasty when they finally made it to us. Food is not remarkable. Frozen burgers, small shrimp cocktail. Walk down the street, there has to be better.

They're the classic huge menu of poorly prepared food. The first time I visited this establishment I actually had a decent meal. The burger was great and actually cooked correctly (medium- warm with pink and some red). However, every time I have come back following my first visit, it has been nothing but a disappointment. The atmosphere is actually really nice. I like the 3 stories and each level has it's perks and nice views. The service here is not the best. We just recently stopped for a quick lunch, which turned to almost 45min and the place wasn't busy at all. Food has been inconsistent and this past visit last Sunday gave us more of the same. I got a basic cheeseburger and my fiance got the Cajun chicken. The burger was ordered medium and came well done. The chicken was dry and not even that warm. We would have complained but since it took a half hour to get the food and the server was nowhere to be found we decided to let it go. Then we just sat waiting for another 15 minutes before getting the bill. I don't know how obvious you have to be when you're done eating but we were clearly finished. We did the whole leaning back push plate toward the middle thing. Overall, I say that Red Parrot is a good place to go when it's late and people have started closing their kitchens. Otherwise, don't waste your time and go to Brick Alley or one of the bars on Broadway. It's only a 5 min walk!

I came here for the first time last night and I was very impressed! We walked in and the host directed us upstairs to the second hostess. We put our name in and she told us 20 minutes. We were seated exactly at 20 minutes after we came in which was nice. What I thought was odd, but smart, is the hosts hold on to something of yours so that you dont just walk out after putting your name in. They take things likes credit card and licenses. You get it back when your table is ready. While we were waiting we got drinks at the bar. It was busy so there wasn't much room to stand. Servers kept coming through with trays of food. That must be difficult. After our exact 20 minute wait, we were directed upstairs to the third floor to a third host. Although it took a little long for our server to get there, he was definitely worth the wait. Greg was our server last night and he was absolutely amazing. Very professional, and knowledgable of the menu. His service was prompt and the food came out right away. We started with the thai spring rolls. It came with a dipping sauce which was so good! I ordered a greek pasta and my friend ordered the teriyaki salmon. He literally inhaled his salmon because it was so good. I also had two glasses of pinot noir with my dinner, and Greg was very good with recommending them. The only thing that seemed a little odd was that the servers wearing a black dress shirt with a tie and black shorts. Classy on the top, casual on the bottom? Hm?

The menu is huge and you will certainly find something to please everyone in your party. That's basically the advantage of The Red Parrot. Also, great location in downtown Newport. (Caveat: parking is an arm and a leg.) I've been here a few times and I can't stay that The Red Parrot is amazing but... the food is good, prices are good and it's perfectly accessible and it's a feeding trough for tourists, haha. Tourists including myself. I also really liked the sesame-crusted seared tuna. Nom.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food given that this is a huge tourist attraction. Service - 4.5 The people are cordial and the service is generally pretty good. We came for late brunch and the place was not busy. The service is maybe even too hurried. Each time the server showed up we felt like we had to hurry. Since it wasn't busy i don't see why they would want to do it, unless the server was changing shifts. Food - 4.5 As mentioned, i was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. Beets salad was pretty good - 4 The Big Kahuna burger was off the hook - 5 Grilled shrimps were great -5 Salmon was fresh and tasty but asparagus was as soft as expected - 3.5 Lava Cake - delicious - 5 The menu is probably too large. Atmosphere - 3 Nothing special about the spot. It's very large with 3 floors and bars on each floor. If you sit by the window you overview Newport streets, which is nice. Value - 4 I think the prices are reasonable and the location commands higher prices. Generally, i I believe reasonably price if a little on the higher side.

I would give them a negative star if I could mostly because their service is rude and they stole my credit card info. After $1500 of fraudulent charges my bank caught I can honestly say I wont go back there again...

The menu was ok. Service was poor. Restaurant was way too noisy. We ordered a bowl of chilli and a house salad. I asked for no onions and of course there were onions on my salad. It took the server forever to bring our food, forever to bring our check and we will not go back.

This place is HUGE!! Three whole floors! We stopped here on a pre-show bar hop. Had some french fries (yum) and a couple drinks. Splurged big time on the oreo mudslide. WOW. Also had the frozen basil mojito. Basil overload! Tasted like pesto. The service was great at the bar, the whole place seemed well-staffed...and the food we saw coming out looked scrumptious. I'll have to go back for a full meal and post an update!

Wait staff is very nice, friendly and attentive. My dinner was good, chicken and spinach sandwich I opted for no bread and I didn't want fries, no prob to get veggies. My husband had fajitas and they were very good. We got the nachos and they had a nice kick with cherry peppers, chili, a great appetizer. My daughter got the lobster salad and that was a fail. Frozen, salty and fishy; dont order it! Much to the credit of the waiter, he did the right thing and took it off the bill. Overall I would go back. Comfortable, very clean. Give it a try! I'm sure its packed come summer but there was no wait on a Sunday in April.

Great Service, so so food....not so great atmosphere. I had a Jerk Salad with Shrimp and Chicken. Very little chicken and small overcooked shrimp. Other's enjoyed their meals. With all the other options in town I don't plan on going back this place.

A recent trip to Newport had us trying many of the local restaurants. We walked in to the Red Parrot one afternoon and were not disappointed. We tried the lobster bisque, which was passable. The hot seafood pizza had gigantic chunks of meat on it and was way too big for two. This place is huge, with multiple floors worth of seating, and a view of the harbor. I'd definitely return to try more on the menu.

Positives: -Fun atmosphere- Caribbean music, open windows right on Thames street - Great value- I ordered the lobster BLT and it was delicious and had a TON of lobster. It was very affordable as well - Cool drinks- fun cocktail menu with some tropical themed drinks Negatives: -Service- slightly slow but nothing that would keep me from coming back Experience: Came here for lunch and had a great experience. A lot of food, high quality, and fun atmosphere! I would definitely recommend going.

This place was OK. It's in a beautiful old building with plenty of seating (3 floors!), and I can see it being a really fun place in the summertime to get drunk with some appetizers- which is why I'm still giving it 3 stars. But strictly based on the food, I don't think I'd go here again. My hubby and I each started with martinis, which were PERFECT. Then we went straight to our meals, having stopped elsewhere for appetizers earlier in the evening. I had the shrimp & scallop scampi and he had a roast beef sandwich w/fries. My scampi was OK - the seafood was fresh and it had lots of garlicky flavor, but it was super oily. My husband's sandwich was awful. It was a cold roast beef sandwich with a mix of swiss and boursin cheese on top, on a roll... a cold sandwich with creamy, half melted but half-cold cheese, was just weird and gross. I guess he should have asked more questions about it before he ordered? But I seriously can't see anyone enjoying that sandwich. If you're looking for a really good dinner, maybe try somewhere else first... if you want a fun place w/OK food and good drinks in a good location, check this place out.

I was visiting Newport with my brother, sister and her boyfriend and we ended up here due to starvation and walking by it. The menu is MASSIVE. A previous review compared it to the Cheesecake Factory and I think that's accurate - in terms of variety and size of the menu. We ordered the Buffalo Calamari for an app - huge portion and yummy. I ordered the lobster pizza which again, was huge but good - thin crust too, just the way I like it. My brother got the crab cake sandwich, sister got the coconut shrimp wrap and her boyfriend got a burger (I don't remember which one). We all enjoyed our meals, but weren't ranting and raving about how awesome the food was. Atmosphere was okay.. Despite the place being as huge as their portions, it was super crowded and busy and it felt a little crammed. The service was attentive and polite. I'd probably go back because it's easy and decently priced, but I'd probably try to scope somewhere else out first.

A bit loud from some drunks at the bar, but that can't be helped. The food was very good, especially the Thai Curry Shrimp. Their Red Parrot Ale (by Newport Storm) was nice as well. Another place that fills up quickly. Come early or wait.

I was pretty disappointed with our lunch at the Red Parrot yesterday. I really liked it a lot the last time I was in Newport in 2006. Both the hostess and the waitress came across as snooty and rude. The place wasn't that busy, yet service was inattentive and slow (not good at lunchtime when you're trying to get back to work). Our waitress disappeared for long stretches of time and we would have to ask for someone else to find her for us. The food was pretty good, but not worth putting up with the quality of service nor paying the premium price. I doubt we'll be going back to Red Parrot. There are too many other excellent restaurants nearby.

I've been going to the Red Parrot since I was very young and will always remain a Red Parrot customer. They serve classic American food, seafood, have great salads and sandwiches and good beers on tap. The location is great - right in the center of Newport. Atmosphere is just what you need for a casual lunch or dinner. Good prices too although it has gotten a bit pricier over the years (but what hasn't).

My wife and I had lunch on an off-season Saturday around Noon. Overall it was good. The service was prompt and friendly, and my cocktail was well made (two things important to me.) My wife had a burger and I got the Caesar salad with blackened chicken. The burger was reported to be good, the sweet potato fries were good I can tell you firsthand. My salad was large and the dressing was very good. There was a little more than I would have liked but that can be the case with Caesar. My gripe is the skimpy portion of chicken. It was seasoned/cooked properly but there just wasn't much. Not much else to say, but I'd try it again... PS A neighboring table got a seafood pizza that looked awesome.

The hosted was not at all friendly in fact she made me feel bad that I Went with my 2 year old to have dinner, she didn't great us just ask 1?I said no , she looked at my daughter and just walk away, not even asking if i needed a high chair, server was by far an ok experience I will say that the food n drinks where great the Alfredo pasta with shrimp and crab was by far the best thing in years, the seafood was so fresh it had a very good good taste. My daughter drop her crayons on the side of the table the server never even bother pick one up, I was not expecting her to just looked n walked away, the Busser on the other hand a short guy with glasses saw it picked it up and smile when he gave it back to my daughter he was very nice, the server only came once to check and I couldn't find her to ask for things I needed I think she was over work or had to handle a whole section by her self. Regardless I recommend the pasta Alfredo with seafood, the services needs some work and the hostess needs to learn a thing or two when it comes to customer service.

We went for an early-ish dinner with our kids, ages 3 and 6. My husband had a cheeseburger that was cooked exactly how he wanted and he said it was delicious. I got a French dip sandwich that was tasty, though the roast beef was cold. I also got a Swedish fish frozen drink that was amazing! Our waiter was awesome, and it was very kid friendly. The kids menu is slightly limited (no kids hamburgers or hot dogs, or a grilled cheese, which are the things my kids usually go for). They tried cheese quesadillas for the first time and it was a hit! We would definitely go back, if we ever go to Newport again.

Love this place. We have been coming here for over 10 yrs. The menu has a lot of options you can eat healthy or have fun and be a little bad. I have done both during my visits here. The RI style Fried Calamari with the hot cherry peppers is awesome, but be prepared.. Very garlicy. Taste great not too strong, but after three pieces of gum. And mouth wash and brushing my teeth twice, the garlic breath went away..finaly. The burgers are good . Just about every fish dish I have had has been great. The drinks are good too. This is a great place to stop after lying out on the beach. Checking out the Mansions and then strolling down Thames Street. Get a seat with a veiw of the street if you can. You can come here in shorts and tshirt and flip flops. Good place to bring the kids too

Defiantly a tourist spot but good to check out. They have a HUGE menu so you will find something for everyone. From raw bar to pasta, they have it all. The service is a little slow, so do not go if you are in a rush.

Just visited the Red Parrot over Memorial Day weekend. Great location down town, casual atmosphere- large drink menu. They happily accommodated our group of 6. We shared the steamers as well as nachos to start. The steamers were cooked perfectly and hit the spot! Most of the table got the lobster BLT which was a good choice. Not the best lobster roll I've ever had, but I was not disappointed with my choice. A solid spot if you are looking for a more casual meal with friends or family!

Red Parrot is a great place for a reasonably priced meal (especially if you're with family and/or children) in Newport. My sister (who lives in Bristol) comes here once in a while and had been telling me about it for some time, so we went recently, and I can see why she returns. The restaurant offers a very wide and reasonably priced menu with something for everyone and the atmosphere itself is attractive and interesting. The fare here is heavily seafood-based with a variety of meat and pasta dishes as well, and the portions are huge. I ordered blackened chicken pasta, which was very good, although I'm somewhat, reminded of chain restaurants like Cheesecake Factory with the varied menu (this can be both good and bad). Others I was with ordered burgers and salads, and everything looked good, if a bit generic. We were seated upstairs in the cozy wood-paneled dining room and the restaurant was fairly quiet on a Friday evening, although I guess that can be expected since it's the off-season. Red Parrot definitely has competition in Newport, but I think it's very good and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for something for everyone and a reasonably priced comfortable location for a meal.

When you offer a $16 for a massive lobster sandwich topped with bacon, you instantly become a 5 star restaurant. Seriously, this lobster sandwich was big enough to eat other, smaller lobster sandwiches. And it was tasty, too. Good grief, Red Parrot. The place is massive, spread over three floors and supported by what must be a massive kitchen. The staff was friendly and attentive, the view of the wharves from the third floor windows was lovely, and the prices were great. I'll be coming back. It's a reasonably priced meal on the water in Newport. How about that?

I hate being rough with the Red Parrot in a review. It's really a perfectly acceptable restaurant; clever dishes, huge menu, pleasant service, and a nice atmosphere. I just can't shake the feeling that it's an Applebees playing dress up for the Newport gentry. The restaurant actually warrants more of 3.5 to a 4. The sexy gorgonzola salad is tasty and well blended, the jerk chicken dishes have great flavor and are moist and creative, and the seafood is usually top notch. Exotic cocktails and beautiful old victorian style windows that open and allow the fresh Newport breeze to tease through the linen make an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, everyone knows this. The prominent location (Corner of Memorial and Thames) attacts large crowds in the summer, even more than the 3 floors of seating can hold. Boisterous and pumping with music, I recommend eating here in the winter, but reserving summertime for tapas and cocktails.

Do not be intimidated by the menu! It is huge and offers something for everybody! The food here is very good as are the drinks. Try the Swedish Fish frozen drink, it is out of this world! There are many interesting items on the menu such as Shark Bites, but they also offer old classics like burgers and salads! The restaurant is pretty large, but if you get there when it is crowded, you may have to wait. During the off season, you can usually get a table pretty quickly. One of my favorite restaurants in Newport!

Visited on a cold Saturday night in February. Was looking for something between a pub and nice restaurant. Place is actually quite big. There are 3 floors. Not such a great selection of beer despite the size of the place. Had to settle for Stella and Sam Adams. No interesting local brews. Quite an extensive menu all our meals were good none great. But was impressed with the raw oysters. One person in our group had lobster ravioli which was quite good. I had blackened mako. Not the best but not bad for off season. Wonder where they got the mako this time of year. Not local that's for sure. Overall it was fine but it had a factory feel due to the sheer number of tables felt very touristy.

I am willing to admit that my review of this place may be biased by the fact that I was on one of the best dates ever and that I was in a swooning mood! That being said... I thought this place was great! The restaurant was not crowded (it was 3 days before Christmas and the middle of the week) so attentive and efficient service was not an issue. The interior was so pretty, warm and cozy on a FREEZING cold day of shopping. The menu was really extensive and the waitress gave a few suggestions - it was choosing that was difficult! We split crab cakes as an app and they didn't dissapoint. LOTS of crab, not a lot of filler and they were tender and tasty. I got the Island Mussels and Clams and it was slap-the-table yummy. TONS of mussels and clams on a pile of linguine in a garlicly white-wine sauce with capers and shallots and tomatoes. I am NOT that girl who won't eat on a date - but I did stop short of licking my plate.. I know there are a 100 great places in Newport (more so in summer) but I liked this place enough to return!

I wish this place took reservations - if it did I would probably give it five stars. The food is for sure not high end, however, the selection is amazing and the quality was fantastic. The clam chowder I had was possibly the best I have found to date in Newport and the Lobster BLT was awesome. The best part about the menu was the enormous selection and if I am not hallucinating I imagine if I came back ten times I would not have a repeat meal even as much as I enjoyed what I had. I have only been here for lunch and I can only assume I would be just as happy for dinner.

I stopped at the Red Parrot tonight for a quick dinner after getting into Newport for a business meeting. As the other reviewers state, the menu is larger than you'd normally expect at a restaurant in a resort town where the goal is to get you in, fed and out in fairly quick fashion. The menu trends towards a Caribbean theme and is heavy on seafood which makes sense because it's about 30 feet from the water. I can imagine this place gets very crowded in the summer, but it's November so there were plenty of tables available. I ordered the Rasta Pasta, which was Cajun Spiced Shrimp and Chicken, with Peppers and Sun Dried Tomatoes over pasta in a Parmesan Cream Sauce. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the chicken was pretty spicy. It all went together very well and loaded with flavor. To make it even better the portion was plenty large which pasta dishes always should be but too often aren't. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try if you're eating there. I can definitely see myself coming back here again, although probably not in tourist season because I hate crowds.

Big menu, not bad food but nothing totally amazing. I'm a big fan of local versus chain although it felt like I was in a Fridays. Would go here again, nothin bad just not exciting.

Marc is an awesome bartender. We sit at the bar specifically so he will wait on us. Super personable and really informative, not just about the restaurant but about tons of stuff. The food is really interesting but always really good. House drinks are things that I had never tried but definitely some really good ones on there. I love the location too, kind of in the middle of the hussle and bussle but not too much. I have never been here and not had a great time!

This was my first meal while traveling the east coast that made me miss California! It was hot inside even with the windows all open, the table was sticky and reminded me of an applebees by the beach (which does not make it better) Then to make it all perfectly yucky the food was Extremely average... I had the Calamari Caesar Salad and my gf had the Mediterranean pasta. Hers was swimming in oil and lacked any flavor besides the enormousness mounts of feta. As for mine, the calamari were fried perfectly, and that's the only nice thing I can say... it had grotesque amounts of cheese on my salad as well and of course more oil... who puts oil on a Caesar salad? Well, they do.

This is a little late but i went to the red parrot for new years eve and couldnt have been happier with the service and food. I had lobster raviois(the special) and my dad had the filet mignion and both were excillent. Although the place was pretty crowded from the first to the 3rd floor our food came out hot and in a timely manor as well as some great drinks. The service was great and had great specials for the new years festivities. Cant wait to go back and try something else. Oo try the buffalo calimari, by far the best appitizer i've had in a while.

If you are out in Newport in the summertime and need a food fix and are not picky, go in here and sit at the bar and have a burger or the grilled salmon. The food here is not that great but its decent and one of the few places you can easily get served on a busy summer night. P.S. If you bring kids here do NOT order the mac n cheese, which is basically the crap you pay $1 for at the grocery store in a box.

First two times going there, loved it.third time was not so hot.thursday early afternoon.everything was slow slow slow, and I'm talking about the service.my soda was flat, second one was also, so I ordered a lemonade.it was watered down and presented on the table with a slam, as were my refills.my guests drinks were replaced nicely but I was ignored the first refill time!! The three way lobster martini didn't taste like lobster at all and was very chewy. tons of items on a huge menu. try the shark bites, they are really good.

Not a bad choice for a tourist trap restaurant. There are multiple levels so one would probably still be able to get seating even if its busy. Good food and drink selection as well. The prices are typical Newport style tourist gouging though so if you have a large party or have kids then just be ready for that issue. Don't expect to find good parking either but if you're walking along on Thames, then this wouldn't be bad.

saw lines waiting and friend heard good things about this place, thus went in to wait and try. first, the waiting system is so confusing. they have 3 floors but instead of getting in one line at a centralized location, you are greeted by the G/F hostess, then sent to one of the floors above, where you'd be greeted by ANOTHER hostess, who'd ask you to leave your name and wait around there. so it is possible that someone above or below you who arrives later than you could have a seat before you, or--on the bright side--you could be that lucky ba5tard someone else is cursing at while you get seated. after name was taken, we might have been given a buzzer (don't remember now), and were told something along the lines of not to leave the FLOOR coz we needed to be there when name is called/buzzer vibrates. some dictatorship stuff only restaurants that don't care about customer service would announce. that or they just want you to spend money on drinks at the bar, conveniently located right next to you, on the other side of the crowded hallway & staircase where everyone else was waiting for a table. were seated after some 15-20 minutes, reasonable for table for 5 on a weekend. while everything looked enticing on the menu, not everything that arrived lived up to its name. the "conch fritter" appetizer had no distinct taste or texture of conch (all chopped up, of course), and the batter was too buttery and mushy. maybe fritters are supposed to be that way, but now i learned. it was crunchy on the outside, though, i'd give them that much. but for an appetizer that costs some $10 or so for 6 pieces, i'd expect a little more seafood taste like in the soup my grandmother'd make w/conch. the steamed clams were ok, but nothing to remember by. meager portion too, slightly. had a couple sips of friend's "award-winning clam chowder"; it tasted more like campbell's cream of mushroom to me. now i remember--there seems to be a gold medal on their label too, on the can. yeap, award winning. for entree, friend ordered a lobster BLT, which she enjoyed considerably. others said their respective dish was so-so or ok. i ordered the stuffed shrimps dinner w/mash and asparagus as sides. i mean, the first shrimps or two were probably ok, but after that, i found the stuffing too much in proportion and too dominant in taste that i really didn't feel like i was eating any shrimp at all. well the shrimps were dead for long (probably frozen) and their meat had no taste nor crunch to it to begin with. probably why they're stuffed in the first place. the mushy mash was like baby food, almost watery. and the asparagus was completely overcooked (ahem, over-boiled); they were frail and tasteless. still care for dessert? i guess not. on the bright side, wait staff were quick on their feet and generally friendly, and service wasn't lacking given how busy they were. but with sooooo many fine restaurants in the area, i wonder why this one got such huge lines. my only reasonable explanation: a classic tourist trap.

I went to the Red Parrot for a work event one Thursday afternoon this summer, it was my first time there. We were given two large tables upstairs and although there was probably 20 or so of us the service was still great. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and some pizzas and they were all delicious. I had a few margaritas and they were potent while still being drinkable. Next time I find myself in Newport I'll go back to try a full lunch out.

The food sucked. Don't try the lobster blt. And don't let them convince you to take new food as the food was burnt. Who burns shrimp? The nachos were actually decent but the place did not leave a good taste in my mouth.

Let's start things off right - I'm coming back here! Food was good, service was good, the place was where it needed to be. The place was lively with friends, families, couples - it felt good. Now for those of you who might not like the families being around them during dinner, don't worry, there weren't little kids running around ruining your good time. Food was especially good. I got the Chicken Popeye Sandwich with sweet potato fries, my GF got a burger, and our friends got the Mediteranean Pasta and Lobster Ravioli. No complaints whatsoever, with the exception of one thing. Although everyone enjoyed there meals, my sweet potato fries got raided my GF and our friends. Next time I should order a separate side of sweet potato fries just for them. I'll be back

Don't bother getting the "Beasty boy", for $12 it's just a bunch of roast beef with a slice of cheese on a piece of French bread. The frozen drinks are yummy though.

Came here on the sat night of Labor Day weekend. There was only about a 20 minute wait which was bad . Since the place is so big, it moves quickly. We've been here several times before. It's a favorite each time we visit Newport. Our waitress Rhonda was nice and pleasant. Very helpful. Me and my boyfriend decided to share 2 entrees. We ordered the the sautéed lobster Blt sandwich on a ciabatta roll which comes with the drawn butter and sweet potato fries. Second entree was blackened fillet mignon with a Gorgonzola cheese and mashed potatoes. Each were more delicious than the other. About the only thing I must say I was disappointed with were the 2 drinks I ordered that I had to send back. First, the Bloody Mary was awful and tasteless. The next one I tried was the pomegranate martini that tasted like kool aid. I finally settled on a Chardonnay. Other than that, this restaurant has cool, different great food.

Went here today for lunch. The menu is quite extensive! At first, it's kind of overwhelming, and you may be thinking it's all just too much...buuut, seeing the choices they have available, You can really see why they're menu is in a half-inch binder! It was kind of hard to narrow it down to one choice...I ended up getting the Bourbon Street Burger, because anything with "bourbon" in its name is a win! The burger was tasty, cooked to order and a bit hard to eat...but all worth it! The beer menu could be a bit more extensive or possibly have more local items vs. brand name. I always like to try something new & different. I went with the Overshore's Saison, I was happy with my choice. Service was great! Our server was attentive..made sure we had what we needed & when we did need anything she was available. When your finished with your meal, they have bussers available to take your plates! Definitely would visit again!

We like to come here for a light lunch and drink whenever we are in Newport. If you get here around 1:30 on a weekday, the crowds aren't bad at all. We were able to get a high top table in the bar area. Just be mindful, that if you want a table in the bar, they expect you to order food. We went with our standby of crab cakes. They do a good crab cake here. Beer and wine selection is ample. Service is always good and if you sit in the bar, you can get a decent view of the street outside. Worth stopping in!

This place is Newport. Locals, tourists share a comfy dining room' with a menu that offers shark! The menu gives a run for the money to the Cheesecake Factory. It takes some time to go through it all. Not a shark fan, but the burgers, sandwiches and frozen drinks are the best in the area. The staff is polite, efficient and accommodating. And they wear great hats and T-shirts that you can purchase to take home. At some point you have to go here once, just to say that you went and to get a cool shirt.

Took a break from the beach to come here for lunch. Nice cool AC. Lunch for me here was just meh. I was looking at the sandwich wraps and asked our server what between the coco loco coconut shrimp wrap or the crab cake sandwich. He said go with the coconut shrimp. Why was it meh? It had some flavour, just it wasn't blow me away amazing how I thought it could be! My wife and daughter had the marguerite pizza and I thought this to be a bit bland also. Maybe it was what we ordered but. I thought the food to be just okay nothing amazing memorable. Service was good...no complaints there. I just wish I ordered something else! Sometimes it's like this in a restaurant. Probably other items on the menu are quite good. Just my experience wasn't anything memorable. Family was okay and I'd say overall a 3.5/5.

Red Parrot is a staple of Newport, located right on the main strip. I've been quite a few times, because there is something for everyone - it has everything from seafood and pasta to steak and sandwiches. The menu is HUGE. Last time I came, I got the lobster mac and cheese, which was delicious. Everyone in my group was happy with their meal. We had a great waiter, which was a breath of fresh air after a rude-as-hell hostess. But I digress - definitely come to Red Parrot if you're in Newport! It's three floors, an upbeat vibe and a very "vacation feel."

I really don't know how some people could even rate less than a 4 star. Everyone I bring here love it, including myself. The lobster nachos are THE BEST. I've thought of asking them to make me a lobster pizza ( which they do offer) but with the sun dried tomato basil sauce they use on the nachos. Hint hint please put this on your menu, or at least run it as a special and let me know =) I love the calimari pizza, and the hot seafood pizza. Don't worry if you aren't that big into seafood, there are many other options for you. Oh and the frozen drinks are sooo good. I will be back time and time again.

Went to the Red Parrot due to the recommendation of the manager at our hotel. Its definitely a touristy place, but I fell in love with sweet potato fries after first trying them here. The Monsta Lobsta BLT was great too. No, it's not overly fancy, but when looking for a nice, casual restaurant to pop into that has something for everyone while in Newport, I don't think you can go wrong.

At around 6:00 pm I had a table for 7 adults and a baby, got seated as soon as we walked in. Last time for a table for two it was a 45 minute wait. It all depends on how busy it is. The service was great, food was outstanding and we got everything we asked for. Delicious food. Definitely will return.

After a day of shopping and yachting on the bay(actually the 10 dollar water taxi) we decided to grab some dinner at the Parrot. It is touristy,on the main drag, crowded and all that. We are locals and believe it or not it's entertaining to visit a touristy place now and again. We sat at the bar and our drink orders were taken pronto by the charming Diego. Our drinks were super, lots of fresh fruit garnishes and clean glassware. The three of us selected the quesadillas. I never had lobster in quesadillas so I took the plunge and I am glad I did.The food arrived promptly, was hot and well presented. My quesadillas had lots of lobster meat and yummy melted cheese. My friends loved theirs also. In spite of a busy RI holiday in touristy Newport everyone seemed to be having a great time at the Red Parrot.

Thie place was really busy on a Friday night but we were seated within 20 minutes with time to have a drink at the bar. I had the lobster nachos, which were more than enough for my meal. There were huge pieces of lobster meat plus a lovely tomato basil sauce on the cheese that didn't obscure the lobsters's flavor. Wanted to try the PB pie, but couldn't even finish the nachos! Very good service. A wonderful surprise: Sam Adams Light beer in bottles! My favorite light beer in the world. Downside: VERY noisy.

Marginal at best. I hate touristy places and unfortunately this was a perfect booby trap. My father in law had to ask for a side of tequila for his margarita because it was so weak. Need I say more? I know I know it's central location is just soo great but really? Are the drinks that good? And with a menu that thick u know they're not making everything so good. Won't return. Meh.

I ate lunch here today. I had good bloody Mary's and a generous helping of fish and chips. The fish was cooked very nicely. The service was prompt and friendly I went back for dinner because it was cool and there were seats at the bar (it did get more crowded later). I had a fantastic Cosmo -barely pink like it should be. I had the lobster bisque which was very good but I thought the croutons on top were just a bad distraction. I would have preferred a small piece of lobster as a topper. Then I had the lobster salad that was very good. I didn't quite get the basket but i just moved it aside and all was good. The bar service was great

A friend and I ventured here last night on a mission to have some lobster nachos. It's it a nice stretch of town, although parking is difficult to find. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and spacious, extending over two floors with multiple bars. It's was a quiet night lending itself for good service. They have both a large drink and large food menu. I didn't get the chance to try one of their mixed drinks, but they looked delicious as other tables ordered them. My friend and I split the lobster nachos. At $16.95, they were definitely enough to share. They had quite a bit of lobster on them which is always a plus. Overall, the dish was rich and a bit too salty for me. The real problem came later. Both of us ended up with sick stomachs that night that continued into the next morning. As we shared no other drinks or food that day, the only feasible answer was the nachos. (Neither of us have overally sensitive stomachs either.) What would have been a 3-4 star visit was brought down to 2 by our very upset tummies. Beware.

We arrived around 5p on a Wednesday evening. It was already so crowded we were seated on the 3rd floor. Not any issue just that popular. The noise level is a bit on the high side. The prices are average and the menu is a bit extensive. Lots of seafood (which I love and is to be expected). My daughter ordered nachos and I ordered stuffed shrimp. The nachos were very good. A large portion but not burnt which is always a plus. My stuffed shrimp dish. The jasmine rice & beans were nicely done and tasty. My stuffed shrimp were on the dry side. I do always hate pulling tails off as I usually make a mess. I forgot to ask and did have some messy hands. The atmosphere is comfortable and the staff is pleasant enough. We both order piña colada's. Her's a virgin. They were both had nice presentation but were very plain in their flavor. The dessert was an old fashioned sundae that my daughter really loved.

Lobster salad year after year is a pleaser!! Been coming here for a few years and always look forward to the lobster salad, served in a taco shell... Lots of claw and knuckle meat.. Nicely seasoned, serves with pineapple, mandarin oranges and strawberries... :)

Came here during an off time on a Saturday. Had no wait, but they had so much seating, I wasn't surprised. The place is really nice being in a historic building. The staff was really great and attentive. The food left a lot to be desired. We got a couple of apps (oysters and fried green tomatoes) and both were great. They have a large selection of entrees, which is typically a bad sign at a restaurant. Meaning instead of doing a few things really well, they do a lot of things mediocrely. I had a surf'n'turf burger which was lobster scampi on top of a burger. My fiance got some ahi tuna sandwich. Her tuna sandwich was pretty good, however, mine was greasy and lacked flavor. Fortunately, her sandwich came with extra spicy mayo on the side which I used on my burger to make it bearable.

This place to me is the essential Newport spot. I first came here back in 2000 when I moved to Rhode Island for college, each time I come back to visit I attempt to make a stop here. On my recent visit with friends we stopped in to have an early dinner. I enjoyed two blackberry mojitos with my meal, they were very good and fresh feeling, not overly minty nor sweet. For an appetizer I ordered the Shark Bites, deep fried mako shark squares served in mini fry basket with tatar sauce as well as ketchup with fresh horseradish. I assume we were supposed to mix the two to make our own cocktail sauce but we did not. The Shark Bites were delicious and not fishy at all. (Not in the bad fishy way) For myself I prefered them with the cocktail sauxe over the tatar sauce due to the subtle flavor of the shark meat, the horseradish gave it an enjoyable bite. My main course was the Surf and Turf Burger, I requested mine well done. The burger is served on a brioche roll with lettuce and tomato and is topped with lobster scampi, the lobster salad and burger went very well together and was complimented nicely by the sweetness of the biroche roll however I ended up adding some of my friends siracha mayo and the slight heat from that put my burger over the top! The atmosphere is a traditional American bar with hints of the carribean but not done in an overly cheesy way. Parking can be difficult due to its location so I recommend parking up the hill on the street or across the street in the metered parking area. Our waitress was exceptional, providing great service with a friendly and personable attitude and remembered everyone's order! Which was a bit amazing because there were 7 of us. This place is really a treat and the next time I come back I will be making another stop.

The service was very attentive and quick! I explained to the waitress that I was a little chilly. She brought me soup immediately. I liked the lobster bisque though I would have enjoyed some chunks of lobster in it. The Lobster Pizza made up for it though! It was delicious. It was cheesy with large chunks of lobster everywhere. If I had just ordered that I would have rated this a 4 but unfortunately I also had the scallop and shrimp scampi. It was not great. It was bland and needed more flavor. Huge menu with so many options....

Having just toured The Breakers to see how the 1% of the 1% lived during the Guilded Age, our Yelp search kept bringing up Red Parrot. A big eclectic menu with something for everyone. The menu is so huge it takes awhile to go through. To save you time reading the menu, just go for the fresh lobster salad for lunch! I was worried it would be all lettuce and little lobster. It was the opposite! Yay for eating in New England! Service was nice. Being Newport, the atmosphere was a happy touristy crowd. Except for the difficulty of parking, I'd go back again if in town. A lot down the alley went from $10 before lunch to $20 after. Luckily it was prepaid.

We acted on the recommendation of front desk staff @ Hotel Viking & gave the place a try. Lots of Carribean influence on the EXTENSIVE menu. They had us at the yummy, crusty warm bread. And we loved our meal - blackened swordfish & Gorgonzola side salad. It was Very tasty and well prepared. Good servers with experience & helpful ideas made this a place I will recommend.

Went here for the first time on a sat night and expected a wait. My friend and I got one of the buzzer things that tell u when a table was ready and we waited outside. By some miracle we decided to check the bar on the first floor one more time and one side was completely empty (I think a large group just left and we got very lucky). I think sitting at the bar was a great idea we got great service! Wes was an excellent bartender(he has a drink named after him in the menu), even with serving the bar and making drinks for tables he was on top of everything. We both ordered the fruity frozen drinks and they were amazing! Topped with whipped cream! We shared an appetizer of RI style calamari which was very good, all pieces were crispy and not a single chewy piece. I had the avocado burger which was good as well. My friend has coconut shrimp wrap which she loved. Overall I was very pleased not only with the food but the service, they are always busy and they do such a good job keeping up!

Our family visited Newport for the day while staying at one of the nearby beaches. It was a hot summer day and we were hungry so decided to check out the Red Parrot. First off if you have a stroller or otherwise require help up the stairs , there appeared to be no other way into the restaurant. We didn't let that stop us though, so in we went. As soon as we lugged the stroller in I get told by the hostess that I need to throw out the Dells Frozen Lemonade that I had bought and was feeding our 10 month daughter. Really? Seriously are you kidding me. Here I am about to spend a ton of money to eat here and your gonna give me a hard time over my 10 month olds frozen lemonade ? After giving her a hard time she allowed us in and we continued our lunch . As I opened the menu and looked at the standard fare we were gonna order the tuna which I asked if it was fresh or frozen and they said frozen? A restaurant by an ocean that serves frozen tuna. Um for the prices this place charges for its food id expect allot better then that . Although we ate our lunch there and it was good, If I had thrown out my baby girls first frozen lemonade I would've been really pissed because this place wasn't worth it. Our experience was very disappointing and we won't be back . Also I wouldn't recommend it for families with small children.

A few weeks ago, we made a trip to Newport with the idea of going on the Save the Bay seal-watching tour and few other concrete plans. My sister's friend from middle school who has since moved to RI reached out to me on Facebook about having a double date brunch while we were in town, and that's how we ended up at The Red Parrot. I visited the Caribbean a number of times with my family as a kid and was looking forward to some good jerk chicken. Red Parrot was up to lofty standards. Also, the drink menu was on point--I love a good margarita! I'm sure we will return to this fun, casual eatery.

Came for lunch yesterday and it was busy...of course. That didn't bother me, the host seemed liked she was being bothered by having to seat parties. Our server, Lil Jen (it's on the bill), was really nice and always had a smile. The pizza was ok. A bit soggy but there was a bunch of toppings, we ordered the Mozambique. Over all good service, food is good. Would come back for sure.

Four words: Surf and Turf Burger. I visited this establishment on a rainy Tuesday afternoon around 1:00. My party had four adults and two children and we were promptly greeted and seated within five minutes. We were seated by the bar, which was nice, but a little loud when the bartender concocted one of their fancy chilled beverages. So, if you don't like the sound of blenders grinding up ice every 5-10 minutes, I'd recommend asking to sit somewhere else. There's a nice selection of some of the more popular New England beers both on tap and in the bottle. We skipped apps and went straight to lunch. All meals were received very well with no complaints- Jerk Chicken Salad & Crab Cake Burger. I ordered the Surf & Turf Burger which was a hamburger topped with lobster. There was about 1/4lb of juicy, buttered lobster meat, including a nice sized claw. The burger itself was ok (I ordered it cooked medium and it came to me medium-well/well done). But the flavor from the lobster made this the best tasting burger I've ever eaten. It came with sweet potato fries and I asked for a side of the Sriracha mayo to dip the fries into. That was delightful. We passed on dessert. Overall this was a good meal and we walked away happy and full and ready to tackle the soaking wet day.

After reading some unfavorable reviews, the red parrot actually exceeded my expectations. We stopped by on our way home to NYC after visiting The Breakers mansion on Ochre Point Avenue. The restaurant's ambiance is very touristy. Upon being seated we were given a menu to go thru. I ordered a draft of red parrot ale to start my brunch. Having watched so many Gordon Ramsay shows, I completely agree that a very thick menu is both time consuming and confusing for a customer to go through. I selected Maui ahi tuna wrap; it's a sesame encrusted rare tuna in a miso soy glaze with mesclun green, wasabi mayo and crunchy noodles served with jasmine rice. It was very filling. The tuna was cooked well and delicious but noted that the jasmine rice on the side was totally unnecessary since it didn't compliment the wrap. The staff hospitality is admirable. It's a bit pricey for what it's worth, however over all, not a bad place to stop by whenever you are in Newport, Rhode Island.

I ended up eating here two nights in a row. The first night I tried the BBQ pulled pork sandwich which came with cole slaw and sweet potato fries. They could of been more generous with the cole slaw but it was enough to compliment the BBQ sauce which itself wasn't too sweet or too spicy. The pork was tender and the sweet potato fries are way better than regular fried, especially if dipped in ranch dressing. I had the red parrot ultimate margarita, it was sweet and strong but not the best with pulled pork. I came back again and got the bourbon street burger along with the mistress salad. The mistress was just a small salad with onions, tomato, cucumber, croutons and interestingly green pepper. The burger was great. It came with this Boursin cheese and bacon. The complimenting flavors make this burger a must try.

Come here a few weeks on a weekend trip to Newport. Since it was the off-season in Newport, there were plenty of places for us to sit down for lunch. The food was ok. I got the Crock-a-Chili while my girlfriend got the Chicken Avocado Wrap. The chili was lacking some spice that would have definitely made the meal more enjoyable. The chicken in the chicken wrap was really dry and needed the avocado to balance out the wrap. The service was very good. Our waitress continually would come over and ask how everything was and if we needed any refills. The food came out very quickly (which could have been related to us being one of three couples there for lunch). I would recommend coming here for a drink at the bar and an appetizer.

Do not go there! It's a tourist trap. We waited 2 1/2 hours to get our food! The wait, they told us, was 45 minutes, but it was about an hour. (granted, it was a weekend) But once you get to your table, another hour and half or so to get your food. If you have little ones stay away!! The service was aweful and the food was not worth the wait.

Came to Newport for the weekend with a friend and decided to have dinner here. They told us a 25 minute wait and we only waited about 10 minutes. Our waiter was great, very attentive and the good was excellent. You have to try the peanut butter pie for dessert.

Annual Anniversary lunch mainstay. Until 8/4/15 at noontime that is. Relatively empty bar however almost all tables were occupied. As we went to sit at the bar the bartender left the bar area and stated I'll be right back. As we waited we noted that the bar was filthy including leftover food as well as a long strand of hair. We waited a good 10 minutes before we just decided to get up and leave. As we did the bartender returned only to stop and start conversating with a couple of people sitting at the far end of the bar near the hostess stand completely oblivious to her surroundings and customers. The hostess at the front door was equally inattentive. What used to be a favorite is no longer.

This is my favorite restaurant in the whole world! Every time we go to Newport we always stop here at least once. The lobster salad is amazing!! They give you so much fresh lobster meat surrounded by delicious fresh fruit. It is amazing! We also love the wings, lobster nachos and the pizza.

I ventured here the other night with some friends from the great state of Maine hoping to find some delicious food and drinks. We walked by the restaurant (it was a really nice night) and noticed that there were tables by the windows and every single window was open. We thought we'd give it a try! The hostess brought us right over to a big table by the window and we were happy to be able to get some fresh air and obtain a great people watching spot. The waiter we had was AMAZING. He knew his stuff (and claimed he only worked on the weekends) and was very friendly. There was nothing wrong with any of our orders and that was impressive. We ordered some appetizers: boneless buffalo wings and some type of Thai rolls. The rolls had a Thai chili sauce that was really good, but their flavor was disappointing. The buffalo sauce didn't have a great flavor either and you could tell that both apps were frozen. They had a pretty good beer selection. I got a Dogfish Punkin' Ale with a cinnamon sugar ring around a glass. I think that was the best part of the entire meal. For dinner, my friend and I ordered burgers, my other friends ordered salmon and a pasta dish. The salmon tasted like it was frozen, but probably was just over cooked. The burger wasn't terrible, but nothing to go back for. Their fries were pretty good. This is more of a couple drinks and splitting an appetizer kind of place. I don't think I'll be back just because there are so many other amazing places to try in Newport. It is also kind of expensive for what it is.

The first thing to notice about this restaurant is that they have a binder with millions of options!! That is a first. Who has a binder for a menu??! Anyway, the server suggested some good dishes and we went with the steamed mussels and clams, the lobster salad decorated with strawberries, oranges, pineapple and blackberries with a raspberry dressing; and the crab cake appetizer. This was a fair share of seafood. Nice chunks of lobster pieces but could quite finish the last chunk. Crab cakes were nicely created with enough crab meat. The steamed mussels and clams were stewed in a tomato and capers based broth which was enough for dipping the bread. Stuffed to the max!

"I FEEL LIKE WE'RE AT A WEDDING RECEPTION" "WHAT??" "I SAID I FEEL LIKE I AM AT A WEDDING RECEPTION WITH THE LOUD MUSIC AND THE DARK LIGHTS" "I AGREE" "WHAT??" "I SAID I AGREE" And this is how our night went for about an hour. I found myself taking out my flashlight on my phone if I wanted to look at something in detail, and I have near perfect vision. It was that dark! My friend got the calamari and she absolutely hated it. She said it was rubbery and gross. Why three stars? Why not two? My waitress was the most patient girl in the world. She went page by page through the menu figuring out what I should get as a vegetarian, only for me to get a veggie burger after all. And Oh! That veggie burger! The texture was like meat and it was cooked perfectly. Now, the negatives of my meal: My French fries were just...ok...I would like to have seen something other than regular frozen shoestrings. And the island oasis machine was obviously broken. The first mixed drink I had had a ton of ice at the bottom of the glass, and the second drink had no ice in it at all as if the drink were overblended. I would say I would be back, but not any time soon, and probably going to go during the day when it isn't so loud!

This place is good for tourists and the like who are looking for a colorful dining experience. I ordered a French Onion soup that was good and a pasta dish that was less than memorable. It was fairly dead in there, but our waiter didn't make too many appearances.

I've been here twice, both times during the summer tourist rush..but the wait has never been more than ten minutes which is about what it takes for me to order and drink a local brewed Newport Storm Amber Ale. The atmosphere is slightly above casual but not dressy. Now the menu is in a small binder so if your the person who has a hard tome deciding what to get...perhaps you should avoid the parrot, but if you want abroad range to choose from this is your place. The waitstaff is pretty awesome and the service is quick. Dinner for two with drinks is probably going to cost you over $60, but fair price to me since we usually are getting seafood. I currently live in newport and am looking forward to checking this place out in the winter as well!

Service was good. We had a portobello mushroom quesadilla. That was good. I ordered a burger and it wasn't anything special. The bun was soggy. My wife had lobster Mac and cheese and the lobster was over cooked and chewy. I'd only go back for an appetizer and a drink.

The Red Parrot is a busy place. I've tried going here before but have always been scared off by the wait times. This time we were quoted 20 minutes and that was pretty accurate. As someone who likes a good mojito, I got excited when I saw someone walking around with one. A whole page of the drink menu is dedicated to their mojitos, which are good, but honestly seemed pricy even for the location. Mojito ran at $11, and I wasn't entirely satisfied with its strength, but alas. For dinner my wife ordered the seafood alfredo, which was the menu item I was eyeing, so I went with the island stuffed shrimp. My entree was good, but nothing special. The portions were fine, and it tasted good, but it was simply unexciting. From what I got to taste of the seafood alfredo, that was delicious and the much better choice. Prices were in line with what can be expected for this area of Newport, most entrees were in the $20 range. It was very loud in the restaurant the entire time. Clearly it was busy, but the acoustics of the room must play a role. As it gets louder, everyone else must get louder to hear their party, and then everyone else must get louder as well. Overall, the menu has many options for diverse tastes. I wasn't overly impressed by the food myself, but it was still good and I wouldn't call it a negative experience; however, in an area with countless restaurants, I expect it will be some time before I return.

Wish I could rate between 2 and 3 ! This is a 2.5. Stopped in for our last lunch while visiting Newport. Walked quite a while and it was beginning to snow (and we were freezing!) so we decided just to stop here. It seemed like a popular spot because it was one of the only places that looked busy at 1:30ish on a Sunday afternoon. We both knew we wanted lobster and something a little indulgent as our super cleanse diet was starting the next day. The breakdown: We split: Lobster Bisque (good), Lobster Ravioli (very good, I liked that the sauce wasnt super creamy or cheesy like most places), and Lobster BLT (we had to bring this home since we were too full) The Lobster BLT has A LOT of shells in the lobster meat. It just wasnt that super. Maybe since we hadnt had it piping hot from the kitchen, but it just wasnt special to us. Service was MEHHH, proficient but not much personality and she seemed a little irritated. They had a HUGE drink selection, good for 21 year olds and tourists. They had "Painkillers" a drink my boyfriend enjoyed when he lived on St. Thomas so they made him very happy. Overall, a nice lunch. Would be really cool in summer however not a great view of water.

Standard touristy place with decent grub. Have eaten here several times over the years and it is consistently OK. For apps we had the Jamaican Jerk wings, which were dynamite, and the shrimp & scallop fritters, which were very good. They were a little on the doughy side, but overall good. Dinner I had the lobster roll with sweet potato fries. By this point, I had eaten some wings, fritters and some of my sons pizza (plus 2 of Dell's shandies) so I was on the full side, but managed to eat the whole thing. I was satisfied with the meal, so were the kiddies and our relatives. There are 3 floors and the place gets busy early, so get there before 6pm to beat the lines.

Great time in Newport with my good friend from Bedford... Toured the mansions and topiary garden, then had dinner & drinks at the Red Parrot. For appetizer had fried green tomatoes w/ horseradish dressing, seared scallops, salad, and key lime martinis. Very busy, but got seated in 15 min on third floor w/ window view of sunset on the water.

The staff are a bunch of sad sacks (at least our waitress and the useless hostesses), but the food is really excellent and memorable. To start we had the calamari Rhode Island style, with super spicy cherry peppers and loads of garlic oil -- probably the best I've ever had. Cooked perfectly, seasoned well, and not half-assed spicy! My mom and I ordered salads, both of which were delicious. Everyone around us was eating something delicious - burgers, lobster everything, and giant tiki drinks that I'll definitely be coming back for. A must-do, at least for lunch.

A must for anyone traveling to Newport! Try the Lobster Nachos as an app. Great atmosphere, wait staff, and anything on the menu is great! Great location and the prices are not bad for a restaurant in the heart of Newport. Mark this place on you list of things to do.

A friend and I were doing touristy things in Newport and were famished, looking for a healthy option and something that wasn't outrageously priced we settled on The Red Parrot. We settled on the Teriyaki salmon salad and the lobster mac & cheese. Both meals were good... I would have given four stars but, the salad was supposed to come with a strawberry vinaigrette. We wound up getting some sort of spicy peanut dressing, and my friend is deathly allergic to peanuts. They need to be much more careful about these things. The server was very nice and accommodating.

I always come here for the shark bites when I'm in town. Customer service is excellent and manages well with big groups. Food is served in a timely matter, please go there hungry as portions are well in size. I have not been disappointed yet! Drinks are pretty good too.

Came here on a Sunday evening. Service was terrible (but the place was far from crowded). Our waitress disappeared for a solid chunk of time while we were in search of drink refills. I ordered a burger which, while not necessarily cold, was nothing warmer than room temp. Our party of four all ordered sweet potato fries. Two orders were nice and hot and well cooked; two (including mine) were cold, soggy and overcooked. To be fair, the other three in my party all enjoyed their meals (crab cake sandwich, chicken avocado wrap and lobster roll). Given the many other restaurants in this area, I'd be hard pressed to choose to come back here - there's just nothing special at all about it.

This place is great! LOVED the lobster nachos!!! The coconut shrimp was excellent and the spicy sauce was a nice touch. I had salad the only thing id change is raspberry vinegar rather than strawberry. The oysters are sooooooo fresh and delicious! Cant wait to go back and try the many delicious things on the menu. Staff was great, helpful answering questions i had. The set up was romantic with the xmas lights.

Great downtown location with the right mix of locals and tourists. Multiple floors can hold almost 400 diners but layout still allows for relaxed atmosphere. Food is consistent and above some of the other larger establishments. PJ our bartender/server was outstanding and very engaging. Not the highest on the culinary tour but solid good experience.

Expensive tropical/American style food. Avoid on busy tourist weekends- you'll wait hours for a table and another hour for your food. But if you visit and it's on the quiet side, it's really a nice place. Downstairs they keep the front windows wide open which is almost like sitting outside. They have a fun tropical drink menu, even though it's a little pricey. The food is a little different than anything else you can find downtown!

I came here most recently for a large party for one of my friends... not much changed since my last review but I wanted to further express my love for their menu and their service! My table got a quesadilla (which was perfect- it is exactly the quesadilla I crave that NO one else can make), 2 types of pizzas, and sandwiches.. and every dish was ginormous, enough for at least 2 if not three people. The menu is massive, really touching on anything that you may be craving. Also, we had a large table and were catching up, the service was was perfect... she knew not to bother us for a while since we hadn't even looked at the menu, but was there right when we were ready. It is a great place for a large group on an otherwise busy night!

Zero star establishment with at least one four star manager. Party of 12. Told there would be a 75 minute wait. After a period of time some members of the group went back to the restaurant to see how the wait was coming along. At this point one member of the party was told that the table was being cleared and set now. So phone calls were made to get the rest of the group to the restaurant immediately so we could be ready to go. Instead of being sat relatively quickly (let's say it takes 10ish minutes to clear and set a table for 12), we were sat 50 minutes after we were told they were clearing and setting the table. During those 50 minutes our party inquired on 2 separate occasions with the hosts and were given 2 different answers. The first time we were told that the previous party had received their check and it shouldn't be much longer (which is already a different story than what our party was told when our party was told the table was being cleared and set). The second time we were told that it still had not been 75 minutes so we would have to wait some more. The 75 minute original estimation is irrelevant when you tell us the table is being cleared and set. It's also the 3rd different answer to the same question from the host table. This was hysterically unprofessional. We have no problem waiting. We have a huge problem being lied to. We were all just standing around in the middle of everything being made to look like fools. We started to express our displeasure vocally when it was finally time to be seated. At this point we began walking upstairs when I nearly got into a fight with a waiter. He overheard my displeasure being expressed and asked, like a douchebag, if there "was a problem" and I explained to him that we didn't appreciate being lied to for nearly an hour and made to stand around and wait like idiots. He decided to reply, like a douchebag, that "you're sitting now so either go sit or get out." My girlfriend was upset at my expletive laden response aimed at the long haired dirty piece of shit, but I think she should be happy I didn't punch him in his smug mouth. You think your establishment can lie to us numerous times and then you can give me an attitude? Who the fuck are you? Fuck you. The manager upstairs was obviously aware of our displeasure, and gave us 2 free nacho appetizers, which was very nice of her. Then after waiting awhile for our food and everything, a waitress passing by to deliver food to another table spilled wings/buffalo sauce/blue cheese all over the head/hair/jacket/dress/body of one of the people at our table. The manager again handled the situation expertly by taking down her information to offer to have the clothing cleaned and paid for by the restaurant, and she comped the entire bill for the table. Our waitress was great and either had no idea about all the issues we experienced throughout the night or did not let it impact her work at all, and we left her $65 on what probably would have been a bill around $200. Her and the manager that handled the situations are the type of people I expect to interact with at a restaurant; two hosts who are either incapable of doing half a hostess job each or are just liars, and a douchebag waiter, are not people I expect to interact with at a restaurant. I'll never be back.

The desk person that checked us in at the inn we stayed at recommended this place as having great entrees. The other descriptions I read on the restaurant say that it is pub fare with a Caribbean twist. I can't really vouch for that too much, it attempts to with some of the offerings. My husband had a jerk chicken that wasn't really that flavorful. We did get seated right away, but this place is loud and hard to hear. The blender was going every few minutes. I have to say I too had a frozen drink which wasn't bad, but overall the meal wasn't very memorable. Weak attempt with Caribbean flavors, but seemed to be a place for a loud raucous party.

Went there for dinner with my wife. Calamari RI style was excellent. I ordered the swordfish with shrimp and scallops. It was pretty good. The only downside was they were pretty busy and the waitress was not on top of the service. Took a while to get a second drink. But still a solid place.

Of all our visits to Newport, my boyfriend and I had yet to try The Red Parrot - the single Newport restaurant that everybodyyy raves about. It was great. On a busy Sunday evening, there wasn't a wait. The restaurant is huge, multi-floors, and quite loud. Thankfully, we were seated at a quiet booth on the second floor. Our waitress was very friendly. Boyfriend ordered a clam chowder, I got a lobster bisque. I nearly had a coronary when I saw how thin the lobster bisque was, ran back to the menu and saw the lobster meat was blended in. Obviously, I can't speak to how much lobster is added, but it was DELICIOUS! Absolutely perfect, and the garlic croutons added a nice touch. Boyfriend loved his clam chowder. We planned on getting an appetizer and a dinner, but our soups and appetizer filled us up. We got the lobster nachos, and couldn't believe how much meat was on them. WHOLE CLAWS! It was unbelievable, and the garlic butter was great. Everyone keeps saying, "garlic butter on NACHOS?" But trust me.. no, no TRUST ME, you've gotta try it. The Red Parrot has our vote.

GREAT food! Ordered the Mako Shark Steak ($24.50) and the Calamari Risque - RI style with hot cherry peppers ($12). The shark steak was a very big piece, grilled perfectly. The salsa it came with complimented it so well. The calamari was very moist. Since inside the restaurant was a bit dark, you could barely see it, but it had a big pool of oil at the bottom. The cocktails we ordered were delicious too! Definitely recommend it!

If you're in a mood for some sand In your over salted steamed clams, fried tomato salad with no tomatoes or any seasoning, blackened $23 swordfish that smells and tastes terribly this is the place to be. Top that off with 45 min wait for kids pasta and you've got yourself a ruined lunch. Stay away.

I had a pretty good dinner here while visiting Newport recently. I ended up ordering the seafood fettuccine alfredo, which was tasty, filling, and rich. I wouldn't say the seafood by itself was great, but since it was doused in cream sauce and cheese and surrounded by carby goodness, it did its job. It came with shrimp, scallops, and crabmeat. The crab was real and by far the best tasting but there wasn't much of it. The scallops were decent if a little chewy and the shrimp was fine. I could only finish half of it even though I was starving. The major drawback is that the service was very, very slow. Long time to get drinks and a very long wait (maybe 25 minutes or so) on the food once we ordered. When our food finally came, my salad came at the same time as my entree. The waitress never asked if I wanted it at the same time or before. Because I was at a small table it became kind of a juggling act with a giant plate of pasta and a pretty big side salad. Another issue is that the menu is gigantic and labeled a little strangely. It took me forever to decide because there were so many options, and I'm still unclear what the portion size/course some of the dishes were supposed to be. The flip side is that the large menu has a big variation in prices so you can eat here for relatively cheap for this type of place ($15-20) OR order steak and lobster for $35+. The slow service I mentioned above would probably have ticked me off a little more if I had paid $40 bucks for a meal. So my recommendation is, if you end up here, order the cheaper, simpler stuff and you'll get an experience closer to what you paid for.

My bf and I went to the Red Parrot after researching which restaurant served lobster quesadillas. The quesadillas were delicious! The drink menu is huge and we enjoyed quite a few creative cocktails. For dinner we split a chicken & coconut shrimp dish. The chicken was a tad chewy but besides that our meal was good. Our server was Nathan - one of the best servers I have had in years. I work in the service industry so sometimes overly critical of bad service but Nathan nailed it - really friendly and gave us suggestions for the next day. Will return!

We weren't in Newport for long, and we chose this place mainly because it had been voted Good for Brunch by users of Yelp. One unfortunate thing was that there was little parking nearby and we had to pay $10, but I guess that's just part of visiting Newport! Despite the Yelp nod for brunch, they did not have a special brunch menu. Instead they had a thick binder of a menu that was somewhat confusingly organized. In exhaustion, I ordered a Lobster Salad. The thing with a Lobster Salad on a menu is that you never really know what it's going to be. In the best case scenario, you might get a small ball of lobster meat & mayo dumped on a bed of green. That sounded alright to me this early afternoon. But I was pleasantly surprised by what arrived, which was a whole bunch of unadulterated lobster meat over greens in an edible tortilla bowl. I accompanied this with a pint of their own Red Parrot Ale. I liked it so much, I had a second pint. The spacious and sunny, open room was perfect for our group of six on this afternoon at the start of summer. They had no air conditioning and needed none; the effect was of a large veranda. I wouldn't make a special trip to come here, but if you're in Newport and want a good meal, give it a try.

On a very recent trip to Newport, we walked around quite a bit and were given recommendations on a couple occasions to come to Red Parrot. Red Parrot is located a little walk away from the main shops and touristy area of the Waterfront. After initially looking at their menu, I was definitely impressed. Very large, with tons of options for appetizers, salads, seafood, pastas and grill items. The salad menu in particular stood out to me, as I am a sucker for when restaurants incorporate fresh fruit into many of their salad options. We arrived on a cold Saturday night and were seated right away. I was even more impressed learning that Red Parrot has three floors, with kitchens located on both the 1st and 2nd ones, both in use when Newport is in peak travel time (ie the summer). We were brought up to the third floor and got a table near a window that overlooks Thames street. The ambiance felt nice. Hostesses were on each floor to greet you and with tons of waitstaff were hustling and bustling around (credit goes to the food runners, who have to treck up and down the flights of stairs to deliver it all!). We asked the hostess initially what she recommended to order, and listed a ton of things to try. She sounded genuine when giving us suggestions, which helped us decide what to order. We went with an appetizer of Lobster Nachos (Tender sweet lobster meat sauteed in garlic and butter with a touch of sun-dried tomato cream, baked with mozzarella & monterey jack cheeses, melted over tortilla chips and topped with scallions) as well as Rasta Pasta (Blackened chicken and shrimp, sundried tomato, red and yellow roasted peppers, green peppers, touch of cream and parmesan tossed with penne). Everything tasted great - there were actual visible chunks of lobster claw in the nachos, and the chip quality is great. Also, we counted a total of 6 shrimp in the Rasta Pasta! Impressive! I'm used to receiving 2 or 3 at most from restaurants back home in Boston. Red Parrot is definitely not skimpy on the portions either, which left me and the boyfriend full. My only complaint is that the service is a little spotty. Maybe it was because the night was winding down, but we only saw our waiter at the beginning and again at the end of the meal when he dropped off the check for us to pay. We didn't have problems getting here, either, because we stayed at a bed and breakfast nearby, though there is metered parking near by. If I ever find myself in Newport again, I'll be sure to try one of their awesome sounding salads next time!

This place was pretty good! The waitress we had was also very nice. We ordered the lobster nachos and seafood pizza for appetizers which were both really good :) the pizza had huge scallops and the lobster nachos had huge chunks of lobster. Then I ordered the crab cake sandwich which was really good. I also tried the lobster sandwich which was LOADED with lobster. Also, very good!!

After a really bad experience at the Barking Crab (20 min waiting for someone to admit they were our server so we walked out), we were happy to brave the cold to walk down to the Red Parrot. The place was packed, but we were seated almost immediately, and served within a few minutes. We ordered oysters (good), lobster bisque (fantastic), boiled lobsters (split tail was a little dry but delicious) and a few Bloody Marys (yum). We left stuffed and happy. Service was excellent. And the prices were really reasonable. What else is there?

This place was generally fine, a bit of a tourist trap, overpriced and not the greatest quality of food, but fine for a spot of lunch on a day out - although next time in Newport, I won't be going back. However there were some things that, when taken with the general feel of the place, just really annoyed me. Our server was nice, friendly and helpful, she was lovely, and we were more than happy with her. However the hostess was totally useless, not friendly or accommodating, and from the moment we walked in made me dislike the place. She scurried us upstairs into an "inner" seat (away from the windows) - when I noted that I saw a few booths open by the windows downstairs she said in a really dismissive way, that those were for larger parties (which was BS as I could see other groups of three sitting there). I don't have a problem with seating groups of different sizes in different places, or limiting access or any of that, but at least explain/apologize/engage, don't treat me like an idiot for even asking. This is a big place, two stories, and must hold 200 or so people, but the bathroom was tiny and, completely unforgivably for a restaurant, didn't have any soap in the only dispenser in the bathroom. I can't fathom how any place in which people are eating, other than a truck stop in the middle of nowhere, might not have soap in the bathroom. That was off-putting enough, but when I came out and explained to the hostess (the same one as before), she looked at me blankly and said "Uhh, okay". Ten minutes later my father (with whom I was eating) went to the bathroom and told me there still was not any soap. That's sloppy, lazy and downright disgusting. Get it together, I didn't expect much but some completely incompetent staff really disappointed me.

This is my second time visiting the Red Parrot. The first time was 17 years ago. Not much has changed, but that's not a bad thing. The restaurant is clean and the food is good.....for what it is. Make no mistake this is in a very touristy part of town and this is a very touristy restaurant. However, the food is good and the service is great. The clam "chowda" is the best around. The burgers are juicy and fresh. The menu is huge and can be a little overwhelming. But there are some good unusual choices (Shark Bites with Mako Shark) that add a good twist. If you sit on the second floor, just remember the bathrooms are either one floor up or one floor down. While the food is really only 3 stars -because it's pub food, the service and friendly staff give an extra star. Overall I would probably give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. I like the Parrot better than some of the other, higher rated restaurants in town.

The Red Parrot is a fun place for a late night food endeavor. We were a little upset when the hostess tried to seat us in the middle of the room....gasp! (If you follow my reviews you will realize that I hate that!) So, we asked the move to a quieter table and she said "Well, this IS a loud restaurant"...so I pointed to a table pretty far away near a wall and it really was much quieter, we thanked her and sat down. The buss boy came over quickly and filled our water and lit our candle. Our server was wonderful! He was very polite and understood completely that we needed more time with the menu. He brought us our Diet Cokes and gave us all the time we needed. I hat the Mistress salad with a 3 cheese quesadilla with a side of sour cream and mango salsa and my Darling had the Jerk Chicken Wrap with chips and salsa on the side. When I asked our server for scallions he was happy to bring them for me to mix with my sour cream....totally yummy. I don't understand why everyone is reviewing this place with one or two stars. Yes, the menu is big, yes the hostess was grouchy, but the two dishes we got were delicious and the ingredients were so fresh. And not to mention our server who was very gracious. Its not haute cuisine, but its do-able and fun. I wouldn't order a steak here, or a pasta dish, but I bet the burgers and other sandwiches are good, as was our food mentioned above. BTW: Ladies....100 calorie margarita....woohoo!

When I think of parrots, I think of dinosaurs. And when I think of dinosaurs, I think of huge. Therefore naming the restaurant after a parrot is very smart because the menu is huge. And why red? Red is the color of love and I love their blackened steak! The Red Parrot is right in the heart of downtown Newport. Parking in Newport is something that is left to be desired, so if you are with the elderly, infirmed, or young I recommend dropping them off at the door and finding parking. The Red Parrot has a couple of levels with the top level offering especially great views. Both levels have adequately stocked bars. During the summer months, it can be quite a wait especially for dinner as it seems that this place is quite popular. There are many many options on the menu ranging from chicken to steak to seafood (after all Newport is by the sea!). My favorite by far is their blackened steak. I've had it every time I've been there and each time it was delectably delectable. It has this awesome gorzonzola cheese sauce on top of it that compliments the steak like giant eggs compliment brick walls. The people I've been with have enjoyed their food. The one thing is that service can be pretty slow. However the awesomeness of the blackened steak allowed me to escape reality and focus on the delightfulness as opposed to the service. Must go!

Sometimes you simply do not want a menu this large. That was my mood when I visited The Red Parrot. So, after quickly flipping through the menu, I just asked the server what she recommended: the Black and White Tuna - really good, I'm glad I took her recommendation, and I'd happily order it again. My group also ordered the Lobster Nachos which were terrific - a couple of big lobster chunks were amazing! This is a great appetizer to share. I enjoyed this place and the food, but there are so many places to choose from in Newport, that, I think I'd prefer to try other options rather than make a return visit. Having said that, if you choose to eat here, my guess is you will be pleased.

The Red Parrot was the first restaurant I tried when I got to Newport. It is a popular place for OCS students at the Naval Base, so almost every third weekend, you will see men and women in dress blues or whites on liberty! It is really quite cute! My husband brought his parents and I here after his OCS graduation and it really made me excited to live in Newport. I love seafood! I could eat steamers all day everyday for the rest of my life. So, living near a place where I can get seafood and steamers whenever I want is just splendid! The ambiance is nice! During the off seasons, it is kind of the old people hangout in Newport, so if you are here then and want a fun night out, I do not suggest coming to The Red Parrot. However, during the summer, it is always busy! The theme is quite nautical and it is nice and spacious inside. I always ask for a booth because they are nice and big and always by a window. One of the things I like about the restaurant is that they do not crank up their AC. Instead, they let the breeze from the ocean float in and when it is just right, it feels so good. The service is okay. I have never had spectacular service there and it is no wonder because the waitstaff is ALWAYS busy. It is a big restaurant and they often have a lot of floor to cover. It wouldn't kill the management to hire a few more waiters since the good is priced pretty high and they surely can afford it. Most of their seafood is above market price. This is not to say that their food is bad however. I have always enjoyed my meals at The Red Parrot. I have tried their lobster ravioli, their fried calamari, their steamers, their mussels, and multiple pasta dishes and each of them have been above my expectations! I would suggest giving this place a shot, but if possible, on the off season! The waits can be quite lengthy!

I'm a local, I enjoy eating out a lot, but after a few bad meals 7 or 8 years ago I wrote of the Dead Parrot as its know by locals with the same experience. This week the Parrot redeemed itself. Friday they posted on Facebook that if you went in, ordered Fish & Chips and used the code word you'd end up only paying $.99! I thought why not...for that price I'd be willing to give them a try. It was mid afternoon, so there were only a handful of people there. We were greeted instantly, taken to our table and had drinks within moments. I had a bowl of clam chowder that was fantastic. There were large pieces of clam in each bite. The fish was perfectly cooked and the outside was crispy without being hard and dry. The only complaint was the fries. They use that crispy spray coating which I hate. It was a great meal overall, our server was very grateful that we tipped based on what the check would have been versus what it was. I will definitely give them another try for dinner!

Stopped in NYE right before the dinner rush. We split a few appetizers to sample the seafood. The Portuguese mussels, clams and lobster three ways all tasted fresh, had the proper textures and hit the spot. My fiancé ordered a horrendously decadent looking drink which I assume was good- there wasn't a sip of it left! This place seems to cater to families, corporate types and large groups. As a table for two, we may have been overlooked.

Spending the weekend in Newport there are two places you have to visit. One is to drive the coast on Ocean Blvd. The second is having lunch at The Red Parrot. Even though the noise level can be somewhat loud ,who cares. The salmon wrap is great. Ask for extra wasabi sauce on the side though.Goat cheese salad was excellent. Our waiters name was Demmene. Yes I spelled his name right because I took it off my credit card receipt. He was excellent. Really made you feel welcome.Beers must be on ice as they were the coldest i've had in awhile. Really enjoyed our lunch.

I have kind of mixed feelings on this one, my meal was lousy, but everyone else I was with seemed happy. The Red Parrot is a very casual, burger and beer type place in a nice neighborhood. It's not right on the ocean but the area is great and it has plenty of big windows looking out on the harbor, nice shops, people watching etc. It's prices are a little much for the quality/atmosphere of the place, but not bad for the area. I had the Lobster Bisque which was a little greasy, but nice and warm on a cold afternoon in New England. Part way through, though, I switched with someone to try the New England clam chowder (which they referred to as "award winning," but then doesn't everyone?) and it was sad. Not much in the way of clams or potatos, weak broth and too much dill. (Fair Warning: I love N.E. Clam Chowder with a passion and insist on perfection. I'm sometimes a little too hard on places with bad chowder, but what can I say? This was bad chowder.) For the entree, I ordered a "Crusted Cajun Catfish" sandwich. Which was crusted all right and a decent piece of fish, but it was the least cajun tasting thing I've ever had. It came with a sauce that was equally flavorless...and pink which was kind of off-putting. The fries and cole slaw were okay, but I just wasn't sure what it was that I was supposed to be enjoying about this. On the plus side, the service was friendly and efficient, the decor was warm and pleasant, and the other five people with me seemed to enjoy their meals (my girlfriend's Seafood Sub, shrimp and scallops in mayo on a sub roll, actually was pretty tasty). I guess I was put out from the beginning when the menu was in plastic sheets in a red three ring binder. I know that sounds kind of snobbish, but I just got a feeling that the place was coasting: they knew people would just want a cold beer and a hot meal, at lower prices than most of the other places in the neighborhood, and so they don't bother trying to be any better than that. So really, it wasn't so much bad as half-baked. But my sandwich and chowder were both bad, so they get two stars.

It amazes me that after a stroll on the cliff trail a person can only find the Red Parrot in this part of Newport. I've only been here 2 days and have stumbled across a dozen or more other choices between here and Long wharf. The Bacon, lobster and tomato sandwich is excellent after you figure out how to attack it. The drinks are cold and reasonable, try the frozen watermelon margarita. The sweet potato fries are also great, I stole about half of my daughter's order. This is a restaurant that feels like a chain operation but that's okay, I like TGI Fridays too.

In selecting the locale for our final Newport dinner, our only stipulations were that it be cheap and convenient. We went with the Red Parrot because it was conveniently across the street from our hotel (and at this point we were lazy) and fairly cheap compared to other nearby options. It was also pretty average. The menu rivals Cheesecake Factory's in length at 22 pages! It has something for everyone, focusing on a somewhat Caribbean, but mostly American palate. There's nothing exceptional about the food, but if you are dining with picky eaters, chances are they will find something on this menu to eat. If you're dining with financially-challenged diners, they will find some pretty cheap options here as well. My cousin ordered a simple blackened chicken Caesar salad, while I went with their jerk chicken wrap. It was seasoned pretty well with a nice sweet touch of pineapple inside, but nothing extraordinary. The fries were below average, the tortilla chips stale. I guess you get what you pay for!

Just ok. Mediocre service from our waiter. Food portions are on the large side. Tried mahi mahi sandwich.... Left much to be desired... Bread they use just did not go well with this fish. Sweet potato fries were good. Everything pretty generic.

Best soundtrack ever (oldies!) : check! References to old TV shows like Gilligan's Island and I Love Lucy in the menu: check! Shark meat appetizer: check! (it was interesting but drier than I expected) Oreo milkshake with alcohol: check! Thorough but slightly overwhelming menu: check! (but, hey, lots of choices right?) Uninterested server: check! Hey... 5 out of 6 aint bad!

Ehhh....my boyfriend was gung ho about trying this place out for drinks and dinner as it was across the street from our hotel, and he loved the girly cocktail menu (ha). After walking around Newport (he initially wanted to save the experience for dinner), we couldnt find another quality drinking spot open mid afternoon on a Thursday, so wound up back here... Sadly many of the blended drinks were hidden inside the food menu, so we'd thought they just didnt serve them in winter...so i ordered my usual - a dirty martini, super super dirty...bartender's service was erratic (constantly around at times, which was somewhat awkward given no one else was sitting at the bar, then MIA when we actually wanted to order). My boyfriend thought his caesar salad was good, and large portions, but my dirty martini was sadly another story - just really bland and bad...almost as though it was mostly vermouth and very little olive juice at all...by no means very very dirty. Still, after being unable to come to a decision re an alternate spot for dinner (boyfriend didnt want to drive, yet wasnt drinking...hmm..) - we found ourselves back at the parrot! It really isn't what i pictured decor wise, very family oriented, but no character whatsoever...i can't really explain it, but the upstairs (and downstairs too but not as much) feels like your in some crappy chain, but without even as much character as that...but i digress. We ordered quite a few appetizers; the calamari, jerk chicken quesadillas, and the "run it through the garden," then i got the jerk chicken pasta and the boyfriend got his usual chicken sandwich...our waitress was primarily MIA as she was catering to a large party on the other side of the room, but her service picked up towards the end (conveniently near the tipping portion hmm?).. the food at the time was fairly disappointing in quality but good portions..the quesadillas had a very strange taste to them, which i suspect was from the cheese, and could have used more bread for the run it through the garden (which is essentially bruschetta). Boyfriend didnt like his chicken sandwich, although i'd say my pasta was the best part of the meal - although in hindsight a bit odd being chicken and shrimp together... All in all, wouldn't recommend, but maybe the summery drinks are better? and a good deal for the quantity, just disappointing quality (both even moreso from living in manhattan)

I've been to the Red Parrot a few times, once for dinner and once for desserts. I must admit that I wasn't a fan of my choice for dinner. I ordered the coconut chicken and wasn't impressed with the food. However, a few months later when we returned for desserts, I was blown away. The dessert was amazing and I would love to return to try other dessert choices. The restaurant tends to be a little on the loud side but if you can score a seat next the the windows it's easy to drown out the noises. All in all, I would definitely return for dessert and wouldn't mind attempting another dish for dinner.

I have only been to this restaurant once, and might I add, the food I had, was quite amazing. The variety of food that is offered on one menu was quite extensive, as well as appealing to the eye. Although, I can't say that I am impressed with the lack of parking one will find near this facility, except for those who want to pay 20.00 for parking, the atmosphere within was calm, cool, and quite relaxing. It's definitely a great place for friends and family to hang out and enjoy either great food, drinks, or both. I would highly recommend this place.

I LOVE this place! A matter of fact, I was in an NCAA Men's bracket pool, winner got to choose where to eat (within reason of course) and this is where I chose, and I already know what I will be ordering. I have been to this eatery several times and have never been disappointed. Now, in the summer, it can be a VERY long wait, but you know what? It is like that everywhere in Newport in the summer, I mean everywhere. But, luckily for us, we have always somehow scored bar seats. Every time our bartenders have been extremely efficient, very personable and knowledgeable about the menu. I have had the New England Clam Chowder which is thick, filled with clams and just out of this world. I always get the Lobster Ravioli, holy smoke, this is delicious!! A generous portion of raviolis with fresh Lobster infused, these things melt in your mouth. The lobster sauce is to die for, it is so delicious. MY GF is not a seafood fan, she generally will get a burger and always raves about it. Burger is always fresh, cooked perfectly, with tasty hot fired, another big hit. My Brother has had the steak (believe it was a rib eye) and he is as big a steak fan as you will find, he was in LOVE with his steak and thought he may propose (he is single after all).. But, he tried my Lobster Ravioli and decided whenever we get back there its what he is getting, no menu needed. Below based on five stars FOOD ***** SERVICE ***** ATMOSPHERE ***** OVERALL *****

You might like the red parrot if... - you like a menu that's so large that they have to put it in a trapper keeper. Seriously, is a 20+ page menu necessary? - you like over-priced, underwhelming, tourist trap food - you like dining in a loud, cafeteria-type setting with 200 of your fellow touristy friends. My advice, wait until Scales and Shells opens at dinner time and walk down there to have some kick ass, fresh seafood for next to the same price.

We stopped at the Red Parrot while waiting for a bus. Dropped in and headed upstairs for a drink or two, and it was nice! The bartenders were friendly, we got a few beers and a few boat drinks; their blended drinks were spot-on for that kind of offering; sweet and cold and boozy. I'd go back, for sure.

I'm confused as to why this place only has a 3 star-rating overall. It was awesome. Busy, but you have to expect a wait on a Saturday night at such a conveniently, centrally located place. We put our name in and grabbed a drink at the bar. The Swedish fish frozen concoction had been recommended to me by a coworker. YUM! SO good. As was the Margarita I followed it up with. My boyfriend and I got seated by the window in the 'couples' area (tons of 2-seaters) and it was a little loud but fun. We started with a half dozen oysters for an app and they were fresh and delicious, and an excellent value compared to other places we'd seen while walking around that day. We both got the Swordfish Mediterranean dish and thought it was perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and very tasty. Plus the swordfish portion was larger than we expected (the bf was happy about that, aren't they always?). And mmm mashed potatoes. Creamy, garlicky...wow I wish I had some right now... The end bill was about what we expected. It didn't break the bank and was so worth every tasty, seafood-y bite.

BOOO!! HISSS!!! BOOO!!! Two thumbs down; my epic failure of Newport! I regret wasting time at this place. BAD BAD BAD! Came here on a Sunday at noon. Note, they don't offer a brunch menu but that's not why I'm dumbing them down on stars. Nope, I'm giving this place 2 stars because their food sucks. In addition, their Bloody Mary drinks were probably the worst I've ever had and Newport is supposed to be famous for them. Obviously, they're not offered here. While the food here is priced well for the GIGANTIC sized portions you get, WHO THE HELL CARES BECAUSE THE FOOD IS JUST BAD. I mean, it's bland, bland, and uber bland! BOOOO & HISSS some more! I ordered the Cajun Catfish sandwich. Now I realize Rhode Island is famous for fish but perhaps getting a typical southern dish was wrong on my part. Regardless, the dish was HORRIBLE! Despite drenching my sandwich with salt, it still remained bland. I even overloaded the sandwich with the "Cajun" sauce it came with and that just made things worse. It wasn't a sauce. My best guess was mayo and ketsup. Epic fail. My sister got the steak salad which was a bit more redeeming, but not impressive. The best way to describe the food here is like Applebee's with a huge menu. With all of the other great places to dine in Newport, SKIP THIS PLACE. The service was not at all terrific, food terrible and overall bad dining experience. Recommend to all the Yelpers to skip this place and try elsewhere. If you truly know "good food" and want something that makes your mouth happy, this is not the place to go. Again, eating here was my biggest disappointment of my trip! BOOO HIISSSS!!!

Not even good..over priced. Barely acceptable. Our table had a burger, pesto feta pizza, which had a ton of calamita olives, overwhelming the salad. and a shrimp over salad dish. Only thing that was pretty good was the shrimp. The waiter Abe was really friendly and very efficient. However , would never go back. Perhaps we should have known by the gross grimy menus. Would never go back unless they announce that they we're under new management.

Yech. The place had terrible food (we just had some appetizers... nothing fancy. So you figure maybe it is just a drinkers bar... nope. The mixers were watered down. I asked the bartender if the pina colada was any good and he gave me a non-commital answer. So I went for it - big mistake. Then when he asked and I said it was no good he was like "I didn't say it was good!". Ok... thanks a bunch for the lack of warning dude.

I have frequented the Red Parrot on regular trips to Newport for the past 5 years and I must say it has gone downhill. I have seen a distinct decline in the quality of the food and service that leaves much to be desired. My favorite dish used to be the lobster quesadillas and today when we had them it was a huge disappointment. The service is very spotty here, and we had a better meal for dinner at smaller more quaint spot for less than we paid for lunch. The huge menu can't hide that there are plenty of other better lunch choices! If you are in the mood for something casual in newport choose the Black Pearl or Pasta Beach (best pizza - and this is from a NY Italian!!)

This restaurant is located in a beautiful spot, perfect for people watching around town. The menu is extensive and moderately priced, more on the expensive end than cheap. The atmosphere is warming and inviting, they even dimmed the lights at 8. This most recent visit though I have to say wasn't anything that would make me want to revisit here any time soon. I ordered the chicken fajitas which were decent, nothing out of the ordinary from what you would get from a chain restaurant like Chili's. I was disappointed by the amount of chicken, my sizzling plate was piled high with peppers and onions. Others in my party ordered the Kahuna burger which they said was great, another ordered a salad but remarked about there being way too much lettuce and the third ordered quesadillas which she loved. It was difficult flagging down our waiter for water refills. We got one the whole time we were there and the glasses were small. The waiter came by with our bill and as an after thought he asked if we wanted anything else. I wanted dessert, so For dessert we ordered the Peanut Butter Puff Pie because we follow them on Twitter and it was the 99 cent special. It was good, the crust and the whipped cream made the pie a little sweeter which was exactly what it needed. The only thing that made me give it 3 stars was for lack of service, getting the bum's rush before dessert and not being anything special for my meal.

Good lunch but rice with Ahi tuna Wrap was a bit strange. Mahi Mahi was excellent sandwich too but again tortilla chips as a side were strange. More of a 3 1/2 than three stars.

I think the Red Parrot Restaurant is probably one of the most popular restaurants in Newport, RI. I've been going to the "RFP" (red feathered parrot) since it opened in 1993. They have always had great burgers and seafood. As a native newporter, there's a few of us out there, I see the parrot as a landmark. A landmark that is difficult to miss as can see by the crowds of people in front. The restaurant caters to all tastes with its enormous menu. You might also notice the diversity of the clientele. The restaurant promotes a family restaurant. If you have ever been to Newport in the summer it has probably not been with your family. On the weekend the parrot is home to countless number of bachlorette parties. It must be their fancy drink menu that attract the girls. With three floors it is easy to accommodate large parties. I love the seafood, but my perfect lunch is sitting at one of their many window seats (huge windows) and eating a burger watching the people walk by. For years I have always enjoyed eating at the "RFP".

Red Parrot you let me down!! I had been here once before, with a large party on a Saturday night for dinner, we had great friendly service and the food was good. I went to Red Parrot today (Thursday) for lunch, and the service was awful!! My party consisted of myself and 2 others, we were seated quickly but that was the only fast service we received! The food took about 30 minutes to arrive, and the waitress was sloooow. I had to ask twice for bleu cheese dressing before I received it, and when I finally did get it, I was almost done with my food. I had the Sunset Strip burger, and it was pretty average, the burger really needed more seasoning, and the bacon on it wasn't very crispy. The fries were pretty decent. Just a mediocre experience.

Eh. Though props to stocking one of my fave restaurant wines (Ruffino Orvieto), I was underwhelmed. I got the Baked Stuffed Shrimp, which was effectively crabcake on top of 4 butterflied shrimp. The stuffing was preferable to the stuffed, mostly because I kept discovering overcooked gristly exoskeleton pieces in the shrimpy bites. The asparagus were mushy. Really good basmati rice, but rice does not a dinner make. My friend ordered Lobster Ravioli, which was so drenched in sauce it reminded me of searching for the flag in the Double Dare pool of slime. The Key Lime Pie was alright, and the slice they give you is huge. If you really want to see huge, however, go for one of the sundaes - mammoth. I think if I was ever to come back here I'd probably just order dessert.

Don't go to the Red Parrot expecting haute cuisine. It's a food factory. Lots of people, 3 floors and service that's spotty. Been there several times, and meals ranged from great to terrible. If you go in without any undue expectations you have a good chance of being pleasantly surprised but otherwise it's just average.

I would go back to The Red Parrot for the atmosphere, decor and to kick back and have a couple of drinks with dinner. The food was just OK. I would go back but would love to try other restaurants first.

Hostess with no sense of urgency sat us. We sat and waited for about 5 minutes before our server came by to tell us he'd be right over. Ten minutes later he took our drink order. From there, it was 25 MINUTES until he came back with our drinks and took our order. He was clearly inexperienced and overwhelmed. Once we got our food it was the wrong order. Another ten minutes of waiting and finally I had my dinner. It was tasty but we were never asked if we wanted another beverage, much less more water. Basically, good food, terrible service.

My favorite seafood place in Newport. Their prices are not as expensive as other places around this area. They have a floor level and an upstairs seating area, which is actually pretty big. However, if you come with a spouse or date and get a table right up front near the windows, you will have a great people watching view. I always get the conch fritters, which are imported from the Caribbean. Their sweet potato fries are great as well. They have a huge menu and a huge drink menu. They do however, raise their prices in the summer time. Overall, I think this place rocks.

I came in with no expectations and I regret coming here. With the three floors & three bars it was loud. I had the grilled mahi mahi, a fish I typically enjoy, it was boring. The house beer is hardly worth mentioning but since I paid for it I should get a sentence out of it. The red parrot pale ale was good but only worth it if you prefer to drink new beers. Otherwise pick your favorite. The service was not bad. They seated my fairly large party quicker than we were anticipating. Although it could have been quicker if they would take the reservation we tried to make. My waitress visited the table frequently enough so that I never felt I was waiting on her. The food was mediocre but the waitstaff was good.

In town on a family trip and realized we had thirty minutes to eat and then be somewhere. We told the server our predicament and we received our food, ate , and paid within 30 minutes. Others have said the service was slow. For us, the service was really quick and food was good. Liked the location and wished I could have taken my time. Seem to have a really good selection in their menu. Giving them four stars for food and great service.

My wife and I went for lunch. They have 3 levels so hard to imagine it would ever get crowded. I had the clams on 1/2 shell, which were excellent, and the calamari which was pretty good. Wife had the boneless wings which were good. Portions were large and prices were fair. The only downside was the servers were stretched a little thin. Clean and well maintained interior. I bumped them up to a 4 because of Red Parrot Aisle, but them back down because not enough seafood dishes for lunch, which is what we wanted.

Really only stands out for the ridiculous desserts. They are absolutely enormous and easily portioned for a family of 12 hungry fishermen. Highly recommended for those days you want something sweet INSTEAD of dinner, or when the kids deserve a reward for surviving a tour of the mansions. Inconsistent drinks, but at least they're big. So-so food, but they offer your standard family-friendly menu so there will be something for everyone. Central, accessible location. The Red Parrot is never my first choice, but I generally don't ever regret going there - I just look at my bill and wonder, "How did this happen there?"

While I give the waitstaff high credits, the food was borderline Applebee's quality with high prices. I cannot really rate the atmosphere given that we brought our two overtired kids in tow. We had the shrimp cocktail which reminded me of the Tommy Boy scene. The calamari was bad. The clams were over cooked and the lobster ravioli was down right disgusting.

A colleague and I were in town for a conference. We made it to the Red Parrot. We were happily surprised! Great food, great service. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, as were the hostess and other staff in the establishment. We had our beers - which were fabulous and on draft. We then both ordered salads. Hers had mandarin oranges and walnuts and a fantastically tangy dressing. Her own words, not mine! I had The Mistress salad, which was a simple side salad with a fabulous blue cheese dressing! All ingredients were fresh and crispy. The best side salad that I have had in a long time! You wouldn't think that it would be so hard to get it right, but the Red Parrot got it right and then some! Fresh greens, cucumbers, shredded carrots, red onion, croutons, green peppers, and grape tomatoes - with the delectable garlic-blue cheese dressing. So savory!! My friend had the Caribbean jerk chicken wrap. She loved it and the sauces on it. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much more attention since I was loving my super rich Red, Red Russell sandwich! This sandwich was so rich and so not healthy. I loved every last bite!! It was warm, tender, thinly sliced roast beef with boursin cheese, bacon, and swiss cheese. This sandwich was so messy, and thus, so good!! I loved it. The only downfall of the meal were the fries. They were thicker than I prefer and with the crusty stuff on them some restaurants use. I REALLY wish that I had had room for dessert. The coconut cake sounded fabulous, but I was simply too full. Next time! I enjoyed my time at the Red Parrot and recommend the food, atmosphere, and friendly staff to everyone! It is a much better option than the Brick Alley Pub. Thanks, Red Parrot!

I was looking forward to having lunch at this restaurant after reading the great reviews, however, we left after an unbelievably rude reception. It was about 12:30 and the restaurant was not very full when I arrived with my daughter and infant granddaughter. When we asked for a table for 5 we were told they could not seat us till our entire party arrived. After a few min the baby was fussing and needed to eat. I asked if was possible to be seated and assured the hostess that we would immediately order food and drink. She refused us and when asked if we could speak to a manager, she claimed there was no manager available. Soon another party arrived and were seated even though everyone on their party was not with them. We left and met our party at another establishment and had a wonderful lunch.

Stopped in here one hot summer day for lunch and it is good as I remember. The lunch menu is essentially same as the dinner, crammed with salads, innovative sandwiches and entrees that all looked good. I ordered the Lobster Monstaa BLT on a huge focaccia bread roll including the bacon with a cajun dipping sauce. It was delicious and was loaded with lobster meat. My wife ordered a chicken sandwich and although the chicken was a little tough, she still enjoyed it. The staff is quick and friendly and the prices are reasonable plus the location is in the heart of Newport! Ensure you make a stop here for a bite or to try one of their creative drink concoctions!

I am actually thinking more of 2 1/2 stars. After a long day of exploring the little town of Newport my sister and I decided to stop and try the Red Parrot which always seems to be bustling with people. I came in very hungry and noticed their menu was huge....kind of intimidating. I had a hard time choosing what I wanted. Being on the east cost I decided it's time for some seafood! I decided to start off trying their award winning New England clam chowder which was actually pretty good, it was creamy and had a good amount of clams which is always important to have. I ordered the Cajun catfish sandwich with fries. It was good but mostly on the average side. The sandwich had a good spice but nothing about it was special. The accompaniment of wasabi mayo tasted better with the fries then with the sandwich itself. The fries themselves were good but again on the average side. My sister and I decided to split our sandwiches (she got a roast beef and mushroom sandwich called the beasty boy) and share and her sandwich was on the heavy side. Too heavy for me to finish her half. The herb focaccia bread kind of threw me off, it didn't mix well with the mediocre roast beef and mushroom and so overall I did not enjoy the beasty boy. This place is kind of generic, following in the footsteps of Cheesecake factory (which I am guilty of loving) but I don't think it's as good. The prices are still just as expensive if not more. The food here seems mediocre but safe for any picky eaters. The decor was cute and my sister and I personally had a great server and was seated right away but I probably wouldn't try this place again.

First off, let me say that I've been here a couple of times and the food has always been mediocre at best. I've had everything from a salad (I remember it was really fatty steak on top), shrimp (which was rubbery), and a burger (that was overcooked). Now for my story: My husband and I wanted to suggest a place for everyone who was coming into town to meet after our wedding rehearsal so we could get drinks. We were trying to think of a place that would be big enough to handle over a hundred people (if everyone were to show up). So we went here a week before the wedding to warn management that we were going to be meeting here with potentially a lot of people after our rehearsal dinner and they assured us that it wouldn't be a problem since October is considered the "off season." Well, needless to say, they were completely overwhelmed with people when we arrived at 8pm on a Friday (which they said would be after their dinner rush) and so they directed us to the upstairs bar. There was not enough room for all of us to stand near the bar, so some guests tried to move to empty tables on the second floor and were yelled at. We were also getting shoved around by servers who were trying to get past us as we were all crammed in by the bar. I had to go and talk to the on duty manager and complain that this was unacceptable since I had come in earlier in the week to warn them before he offered to stop seating guests upstairs and we could sit. Poorly managed and poorly treated. What upset me the most is that most of the dining guests that they had in the restaurant were our wedding guests. We sent them tons of business that night and they were rude. I will not be going back.

After walking up and down broadway, I went from not feeling so hungry to having strong craving for some seafood. However, most of the decent looking restaurants are quite formal, crowded and pricy. My friend and I definitely wasn't dressed for a fancy dining experience, my wallet wasn't prepared for splurging and I really just wanted to variety of seafood to nibble on while i have a beer or two. We decided on Red Parrot since it easily grabbed our attention--it's big and busy and it's menu looked pretty decent. I decided to stay after seeing that we could dine at the bar (thus no pressure to order full meals). The bar-tender was friendly although he wasn't great at his job, but since I wasn't there for the bar experience I am going to let that pass. I ordered lobster bisque and seafood pupu to nibble on. The lobster bisque was bland, and for $7/cup it was serious lacking in substance. I might have come across a few nano pieces of lobster, but it didn't contributed much to the flavor or the substance, instead "cream" dominated those two fields. Let's just say I was eating hot flavored cream with lots of crouton in it. The seafood pupu was on the other hand amazing. It had 2 littleneck, 2 oysters, 2 jumbo shrimp cocktail, 3 crab claws and 1/2 lb of red stripe shrimps on one big platter. The littleneck, oysters and red stripes were especially outstanding. I took off two stars b/c of the lobster bisque and the average service at the bar. Although the pupu was really great, it was b/c of the freshness of the seafood not due to the culinary skill of the restaurant. I definitely plan on visiting Newport again, but Red Parrot most likely won't be my restaurant choice next time.

People are kind of tough in their reviews here. Every time I have come here I get a table with a lovely view and I get a decent enough server. The crab cakes were excellent as was their salad, burgers and soups. The only thing I've had here that I didn't like were wings. The restaurant is very pretty, the food is good, and there is a nice view. These things combined make it so that I like going back and would consider myself a fan.

We are here in Newport for a week. My husband loves to eat at the Parrot for his favorite sandwich......Monsta Lobsta! He loved it once again! My complaint is....everytime we eat here.....they cram the 2 people parties down on the little area out front. Its cold, and uncomfortable! I had the chicken ceasar salad, delicious!

When I was a graphic design major at Roger Williams University my friend and I would travel to Newport, RI for the day. Walking the busy cobblestone streets and sidewalks we were looking for a place to grab a decent bite. Being a fairly large group coming to a decision was difficult and I was starving. Finally after what felt like 20 minutes of searching we came across The Reb Parrot that stood out along one of the busy street intersections. It was a great spring afternoon and the restaurant had the windows open which let in the breeze that came off the ocean nearby. We all sat around one of the large tables in the upstairs dining area. Looking over the menu we saw that they have a lot of delicious options to choose from at great prices. I don't like to complicate things too much so I prefer to stick with my standard burger and fries when walking around for an afternoon. I was delightfully please finding the burger to be cooked to my liking (medium to medium-well) juicy, plumb with just the right bit of char as it rests between a bun with lettuce, onion and a tomato. A well portioned of fries and a fresh dill pickle spear waited along to the side. It's been some time since I've visited Newport but I always like to come here for lunch because it has great food at a great price and reminds me of the days I was in college not too long ago.

Good food, huge menu and great drinks. Service is excellent. Came here on a date, loved the Ginger snap chicken, just the right amount of spice. Opened with a Shiraz/ Cabernet blend and finished the meal with an awesome hot drink - lady godiva with hazlenut and chocolate liquers. No need for dessert! Will def come here again.

Order: Lobster Nachos, clam chowder, sweet potato fries, sole and lobster, coconut mahi mahi, diet coke. The best part of the meal was the soup and appetizer - and even that was just okay. The lobster nachos were pretty good, with quite a bit of large chunks of lobster meat, but the clam chowder was awful: creamy, but very little clam meat, and served at room temperature. Yuck! They call it "award-winning" clam chowder, but I'd be curious to know the details of this supposed award it won. Not good at all. Entrees: The sole and lobster dish also had a decent amount of lobster, but the entire dish was not seasoned properly, over-cooked, and very underwhelming. One of those "it's missing something" kinda dishes. The coconut mahi mahi stuffed with seafood stuffing was so overcooked that the fish was chewy and dry. Also very underseasoned - had to be drenched in hot sauce to really be edible. Both entrees also came with mushy, unseasoned asparagus. Overall, very disappointing entrees - missing the mark with the seasoning, and overcooked. To round out the order: diet coke was flat (!!), but the sweet potato fries were yummy - crunchy and sweet with a yummy dipping sauce. The service was decent - not awesome but not horrid. As others have mentioned, the menu is pretty extensive, but nothing really jumped out at me. Personally, I'd rather have a menu with 5 items on it that all sound amazing than a binder full of items that all seem just okay. Overall, a sub-par experience. Would not recommend, and would not go again.

I've eaten here several times over several years. My visit last week was typically pleasing. Wonderfully large menu with lots of interesting and varied choices. My favorites include the conch fritters, nachos, black and white seared tuna, Jamaican Me Crazy Mon Pork Chops, the Portuguese stuffed clams, and the steamers. All the portions are generous. It's a very busy, very noisy place. The hostess is usually pretty accurate with her estimate of the waiting time. On a weekend night the wait can exceed an hour; we were told it would be 30 minutes and it was. I'd probably agree to wait 45 minutes for a table at the Parrot... waits all over Newport can be long. The wait staff is always friendly and mostly attentive. Blender drinks and other apps are remembered as superb from my previous visits. And yes, the Swedish Fish cocktail does "taste just like the candy."

I had the award-winning clam chowder. Yum. My mother had a pizza. The crust was grilled on both sides, and then sauce and cheese were added and broiled. It was good. It is fun to be seated at the edges of the restaurant and to watch the pedestrians pass by. The restaurant was packed on a Sunday night, which made it very difficult to have a conversation. Our hostess promptly called a taxi for me. Overall, it was a good experience.

My wife & I went here for a nice "last dinner" during our visit to Newport, and were disappointed. The place looks great from the outside, and is actually quite nice on the inside. The wait staff was also pleasant and attentive. Where it falls apart is the food. I had the $30 "lobster stuffed steak" and the result was something you'd get at Red Lobster. The steak was medium quality and the lobster was a bit rubbery and a little fishy. It seemed like they mixed in some sort of crab meat into the lobster for the sake of volume, but who knows if this is true. My wife had the Jerk Chicken, and her dish was also marginal. The chicken was thin and just didn't taste right. Overall, the experience left us wishing we chose another restaurant for a "nice dinner". We probably would have been happy going there for burgers at lunch, or similar. Update: Russ had notable post-visit customer service, and he seems committed to providing a positive experience. We will give it another shot when we are in Newport again.

I'm not huge fan, but I've never been utterly disappointed either. They have nice big menu with plenty of shareable food like quesadillas, chicken fingers, pizzas as well as large selection of seafood and steak entrees. You can't beat the prices or location for Newport, RI. My favorite drink? Skinny Margarita.

After a long night of riding the porcelain bus, my boy friend and I headed to Newport to do the christmas mansion tours. Gay/touristy I know. I loved it none the less. I digress. Where was i? OH! ok so i felt like total shit and needed to eat...and the only way to cure a hangover(which is what ill call this because i was still drunk) is greazzzzzzzzy, overpriced food(JK on the overpriced food. I like a good ol roach coach. minus one star for price). Yes, this place is a major tourist trap, but honestly who really cares. It is a cute place. I come from SF...the home of the tourist trap restaurants...and some of them are actually worth going to anyway. I will say, I was actually pretty impressed with the food. I might not be if i had it now, but at the time it was heavenly. I got the monterey chicken sandwich...melted monterey cheese, roasted red bell pepper and artichoke hearts. amazing. I dont know what kind of bread they use, but it was SO good as well. Service was way slow. Like...snail mail slow. It wasnt too crowded either, which made me wonder. The waiter made up for it though. He was super nice. And wearing shorts...it was in the 30s. I dont get it.

Went there a number of years ago when my son graduated from Brown Graduate School. A great place for a group ( I think we numbered 10, maybe more) we sat on the 2nd or 3rd floor. The menu is extensive and the wait staff just seems to want to make sure you have fun. Right on one of the main streets in Newport, this is a great place for a long lunch - adequate amounts of food bolstered by more than adequate amounts of beverages. Next time you are in Newport, give it a try.

I was attracted to this restaurant when I saw there windows. The service is friendly, but the food is so-so. We order the Grilled Mahi-mahi which is bland and the side, we chose mashed potato was just average quality. We also had 2 teasers : Siamese sticky wings and Indonesian Chicken Satay. They are 2 dishes from different culture, but they were served with the same dipping sauce. The Siamese sticky wings is the best out of the 3 dishes we have. Disappointed with the food overall. Guess this is what you get from Touristy location, whereby people don't expect return customers?

This place is soooo good. The location is amazing, right in the middle of everything and there is a view of the harbor which is really pretty. The menu is huge and there are so many different tropical drinks. I got the Greek salad pizza, I have never heard of such a thing so I decided to get it, it was delicious. Our waiter was nice and I would definitely come back here!

Oh Red Parrot...there you sit on the corner of Thames, beckoning to every tourist that passes... Ive been here a few times. Its fine. I went back recently at the request of my parents on Memorial Day weekend. I was dreading going here because it was a) Friday night of Memorial Day weekend, b) gorgeous weather all day and c) it was the night before the RWU graduation...all a sure recipe for at least an hour+ wait at the infamous RP. By some miracle...there was no wait. We were seated immediately on the first floor (YES! I hate sitting upstairs!) at a huge booth with a great view of the Thames/Memorial intersection. Our server was incredibly friendly and patient with my mildly neurotic parents. The menu is soooo long and for the most part, predictable. They do try to get a little creative with their cajun inspired dishes but since these are Newport prices and you are at the mother of all Newport tourist traps, their interesting dishes are way more expensive then they should be. I went with a simple penne in a light tomato sauce with a huge helping of ricotta cheese on top. It was good, but basic. I didnt eat a whole lot of it but later that night after a few drinks, I fell in love with this dish in my hotel room. My husband went for the cajun chicken with beans and rice which he liked for the most part, although the chicken was overly coated in jerk seasoning that tasted a bit too salty. Like me, this dish was better appreciated much later that night back at the hotel. My parents had forgettable burgers that they seemed pleased with. Bottom line: sufficiently overpriced tourist trap with a huge menu in a great location in Newport. Go so you can say youve gone, but next time you come to town, branch out a little and check out some of the smaller, out of the way restaurants.

Not a fan of most of the places in the Newport wharf area, mainly due to the tourista aspect, but we hit the Red Parrot on the recommendation of some friends...very pleased... They have a very large variety (something for everyone), reasonable prices, and great service...will definitely keep this in my back pocket the next time I have out-of-town guests asking to hit Newport...

My girlfriends and I came here to celebrate a bachelorette party a couple weekends ago, and i was surprised at how much I liked this restaurant. Such a large restaurant, with crowds of people piling in...I wasn't sure if it was just a tourist attraction. However, I was pleasantly surprised by their food. Not being the only bachelorette party there, the place was PACKED. They do not take reservations; so there was obviously a wait to be seated. Once seated, we met our waitress, who was very nice and accommodating. However, service was a little slow during the night-- due to the many people and overcrowded bar. I'm sure we waited 15-20 minutes before actually receiving our drink orders. I had the Linguini with Clams, and it was delicious. A little salty, but still pretty yummy. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their apps and entrees. Their cocktails are also well-made. This is a great place to come with a large party.

After asking my friends where I should go in Newport, those who knew the area recommended a stop at The Red Parrot. I was told it was really different that what you'd normally find in Newport. I didn't think it was that different but I do agree that it's worth checking out. The waitress was either new or a little slow. After she failed to ask, I spoke up and specified which sauce I want on my pork chops she looked at me like I had eight heads. I'll cut her a little slack because the menu is pretty huge, maybe she didn't get to the chapter on chicken and pork entrees yet. Once the food arrived I was surprised to find 3 chops and a mountain of potatoes on my plate. The food was good but one chop and a large hill of potatoes was left uneaten and went home with me for lunch the next day.

We almost didn't eat here because reviews for other restaurants were better, but we were so glad we did! We went around 7:30 on a Sat and were told it'd be about a 40 min wait. We ordered a drink while waiting. I highly recommend their martinis! We started with apps and ended up being so full (I'm sure the drinks were a factor in that), that we didn't even order a main course. My bf ordered the Sticky Wings which were the some of the best wings he's had in New England (no one really seems to make them right - tossed in the sauce after being deep fried so they're crispy AND saucy). I ordered the lobster quesadilla and it was a great portion - about 6 pieces with a great dipping sauce. I couldn't believe how good it was. I just ate it yesterday and am craving it again today! The server was friendly although it was busy. If we're ever in Newport again, we'll definitely be back!

This place is overrated. The service is not all that great. The bar staff is rude. There are many other places you can go to in Newport and have an awesome time and service.

The Red Parrot is at the hub of the main intersection in Newport. It is a large brick building. You cannot miss it. It summons you. But do yourself a favor and keep walking. There is nothing at all special about this place. My husband, teenage son and I came here after a show this week and the service was just horrific. It was about 9:30 pm, people were at the bar, we were seated at a table near the bar but we may as well have been in Siberia. First of all, the very young hostess looked at us like we were annoying her when we walked into the restaurant to be seated. No smile, no follow me, nothing. The waitress we had was very nice but she vanished for about 15 minutes after bringing our drinks without taking our order. We were almost ready to leave money for the drinks on the table and find somewhere else to eat because we just needed a quick bite after the show before heading back to the hotel. We stuck it out and she came and apologized and was wonderful after that. The food was ok. The best thing at our table was the burger my son ordered. He loved it and it was big and looked delicious. I wouldn't return here though.

Good appetizers and pizza during prior visit. I had the lobster ravioli last night and did not like the ravioli or sauce. Lobster was good but the dinner gave me a stomach ache. My wife did not like her Mahi Mahi. Good touristy location.

Whenever I come here I am always like ehhhhhhhh. The frozen drink list is pretty extensive and creative if your into that kinda thing. But the lobster bisque gave me a tummy ache and the oysters tasted like flavorless mush. This is coming for a gal who knows her oysters, Bucko. Oh and the bartender didn't really seem to know that he was doing. My martini wasn't even cold!

Snooty management and hostesses! Not a place to go if you have a baby or have any special needs. Their changing table is on the 3rd floor. Overall, just very unimpressed. This place is basically a tourist trap.

Given its location, this restaurant becomes pretty busy during the summer months. I've never had to wait though, since there's three levels to this place. Their menu is very extensive so there's plenty to choose from. The food, however, is mediocre at best. The service is quick. Even on a busy summer night, our waitress never forgot about us.

This is a MUST stop while in Newport, Rhode Island! We love the conch fritters (the sauce that comes with them is awesome) and the sweet potato fries. The menu is HUGE! Every type of person will find something here! Their salads are larger than you think, the chili rocks and everything else our table had was completely devoured! We love this place! Our waitress took our order without writing anything down. We were quite impressed when she didn't screw up at all! EAT HERE!

Was Ok, they had a huge menu, so I don't know if they really had a specialty...My husband enjoyed his curry dish, but my salad was drenched in dressing even though I did ask for it on the side... It is definitely a touristy place...

This place is definitely reasonable. Huge portions! I got the black&white tuxedo tuna salad and the tuna was perfectly medium rare and the Thai peanut sauce complimented it well. I added cucumbers to my salad which I felt was a nice touch. We also had mussels and clams in the white wine sauce and those were great as well. The views from the top floor are gorgeous! The service was good and menu variety is good enough for everyone to find something. They also have really great tropical drinks.

The only thing I liked about this place was the my entree. Starting out going to Scales and Shells but they weren't open for lunch and I didn't want to wait until dinner time. My boyfriend ate here with his parents months before and said it was pretty good. We entered and found our way to a hostess stand, there were two college girls talking, we stood there for about 60 seconds until one of them noticed us. She asked how many, I said 2. She then told us to go upstairs and find the hostess stand up there... FIND it. My frustration was beginning to build up. We were able to find the hostess stand easily, but I noticed that it was extremely hot in upstairs portion. We were sat at a 2 top near the window facing the water which was nice. Our table was dirty with the previous guests crumbs. The server felt bad and quickly cleaned off the table. (something the hostess should have noticed.) Also, the second floor seems to be the place where they seat large parties and families, it can be irritating if the family is obnoxious, but our family was pleasant. Our server was friendly and prompt, she welcomed us to Newport and to the restaurant. We ordered the calamari for an app. It was just okay... wayyyyy overcooked as it was rubbery and a little oily. For an lunch I had this lobster sandwich with this amazing mayoey sauce. It was fantastic, it was huge and the lobster was fresh!! I would go back there and get that again and again. My boyfriend had a fried catfish sandwich, it was pretty decent. I would eat here again for lunch and maybe get some drinks.

The Red Parrot on a Saturday night is packed, regardless of their almost infinite seating areas. At the same time, our party of 6 was seated in only 20 minutes after being told it would be 45, which was a good start. I can't say there was anything remarkable about the Parrot. The service was decent, the food was pretty good, the prices were fine, and there was plenty of space in the dining area upstairs where we ate. But this place isn't really memorable in any way, shape or form. What I can say is that their menu, which is like going through a mail order catalog, is ridiculously long. I would think that having so many choices on the menu would make it difficult for the chefs to be able to make any one item on it delectable. And I would probably be right. The ribs I had were monstrous and fairly tasty, the sweet potato fries were piled on high, and my beer was cold. I can't say much more than that. I also tried the lobster ravioli, which was actually pretty good. If you've got a large party, like say a bachelorette party (of which there were 3), this is a good place to go for dinner. You'll probably get seated fairly quickly, the menu is big enough to appease everyone, and the drink choices are plentiful as well. But I doubt anyone in your party will say "hey, that was a great dinner!"

The Red Parrot is a good time. Nice location right on Thames. The food is very good and the drinks are made right. This place gets busy in the evening, so if you are looking for a quiet dinner, go early. Try the shark if they still have it!

Terrible service, it took forever for them to bring the food and they brought the wrong food. The food they brought had hairs in it, when we complained they had the take it or leave it attitude. Food was very greasy and heavy. I do not recommend this place at all

I'm from San Diego, where we have a vast variety of cultural food from great sushi to mexican food, but the one thing this city lacks (in my opinion) is amazing seafood. That being the fact, when my company, who's stationed in RI, flew me out for the company X-mas party, I had a goal to try as many seafood restaurants as I could. The Red Parrot was my first of 4 and it was, hands down, the best of the bunch! I would even go so far as to say it is quite simply the best seafood restaurant I've ever had! My fiance had the surf and turf and I opted for the seafood (scallops, crap, and shrimp) fettuccini alfredo. I could rave for hours about how impressed I was by the quality (and quantity) that I experienced there. By the end of the meal I was so stuffed that I was risking throwing up my delicious meal by taking another bite, yet it was so incredible that I continued to force it down until my plate was clean. We simply don't have such succulent seafood in San Diego and I can't wait till I fly back next year and can experience this amazing place again!

Awesome facility, although we were trying for something with a view of the water. Having three floors, you'd expect to be seated readily, but there's still a wait. However, with the restaurant having so many customers, I expected our food to take a while and it came out considerably faster. We had the black and white tuna (exceptional, especially with the sauce, and the sweet mash and asparagus sides were good as well) and the salad (very fresh, good fruit). We had the red parrot ale (very crisp taste) and the pain killer (strong), then the Oreo mudslide for dessert (way too icy- needed more ice cream and less ice, or just to be blended more. Every sip sucked a chunk of ice to straw tip which became very annoying). Service was average. Bottom line- pros- Food, service, beer. Cons- wait, view, mixed drinks. But the food carries it enough to earn 4 stars. Would come here again during a less busy time.

Big fan. Nice casual restaurant in Newport. They have a very extensive menu with a good selection. But the real reason I come here is the desserts. Oh my these are great. There's a massive brownie bowl thing that you'll need two people for. I tend to go for the peanut butter pie. Awesome. Four stars for a full meal but if you come for just dessert I'd give it five.

This was our first time dining here and overall the experience was very positive. The food was great, we had the chili which could have used more of a kick, we had the lobster salad which was very good and my husband had the bourbon street burger which was delicious. The waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. The only downfall of this restaurant is the hostess areas. When we first arrived the downstairs hostess directed us to the second flour hostess who gave us a beeper for when out table was ready, she said about 30-40 min which was very accurate. Once the beeper went off we returned to the upstairs hostess as she was holding my husbands drivers license, which we had never seen done at a restaurant before. She then told us to go back downstairs as that is where our table would be, so back down we went. We saw the downstairs hosted who immediately sat but the whole process was unnecessary and confusing. It would not prevent me from coming back but it was annoying nonetheless.

Okay, let me preface this review with a disclaimer: Out of my entire party, I was the only one who disliked my experience here. And a part of my displeasure wasn't really the restaurant's fault, since we were seated next to a parent with a kid who screamed LOUDER THAN THE WINDS OF HADES !!! That being said, I really do have to give the restaurant a mixed review. The atmosphere can't be described in one word. Suffice it to say that the Red Parrot tries to be both a bar and a family restaurant at the same time, to equal degrees, and the result is one loud mess. Even with three floors, the place was still over-crowded, which you can feel free to interpret as good ("at least it's popular, that says something") but in my mind, the attempt to be both a bar and a family restaurant just ends up making it not really work in either category. The service is inconsistent; our waiter was friendly enough, but the over-worked bartender was outright rude, and for a place that was so busy, the Red Parrot seemed to have an awful lot of employees who did nothing but stand around and look lost. Our appetizers -- buffalo calamari and lobster nachos -- were both excellent. Delicious, and plentiful. I would have been happy just snacking on those all night long. But I made the "mistake" of also ordering a main course. I selected one of their "recommended items," the "island-stuffed shrimp." The menu explained that this shrimp was split and then stuffed with a mixture of crab meat and mushroom. It sounded delicious, but the mixture turned out to be beyond bland -- completely tasteless, as a matter of fact. And the shrimp wasn't split and stuffed, as advertised; instead, the shrimp was unshelled and just shoved into a few globs of the boring mushroom concoction. The side dishes of green beans and rice (I wasn't given a choice of sides, mind you, this is just what came with the shrimp) had as little flavor as the crab meat. The whole meal seemed designed for someone who was allergic to taste. I know I'm a complainer, but let me put this into perspective: Out of all the restaurants we ate it in Newport that entire weekend, the Red Parrot was by FAR the most expensive, and also the ONLY one I did not enjoy. Any way you look at it, there's something wrong with that. ("How expensive?" you ask? Well no point into getting into specifics, since you might order something different, but even when someone else offered to pay the majority of the check, I still ended up spending more money here than anywhere else in Newport.) My recommendation: Newport is full of VERY good restaurants, and many of the smaller ones are often the ones with the most character, and the best food. There is simply no reason to go to the Red Parrot when there are so many other delightful discoveries for dining out in this town.

Had clam chowder and lobster blt for dinner here. Place is very pubbish and sort of loud. Food is okay, not bad but not good either. I'd rate applebees' food higher than this place. Servers are nice but slow. And prices are way overpriced.

I have eaten at Red Parrot several times in the past few years with satisfactory results, hence my return visit today. All I can say is what happened to the Red Parrot that I remembered? If you are an out of town visitor steer clear, my visit today was nothing short of mediocre tourist fare. We ordered quesadillas and nachos that were passable if you don't mind blah cheese between two burrito shells and a tomato based bean glop on top of tortilla chips. The barbecue chicken fingers (it did have a fancier name) was the most disappointing. My 18 year old son said it tasted weird and he was quite correct, we took it home to our dogs. My avocado/spinach salad was probably the most appetizing since it is pretty hard to mess up sliced avocados on a bed of baby spinach, although the salad was room temp rather than chilled. We ate at 4 on a Monday and it took over 30 minutes to get our food; my son also waited 10 minutes for the waitress to come back with his water refill,I can't think of a single reason to recommend this place, and certainly don't intend to go back; what a shame, they recently renovated.

I hate 1-staring this this place had it coming. It has really gone down hill fast. The receptionist ruined it for the entire place. The scene: -Saturday, Leafer Season, Oktoberfest and a cruise ship has flushed the town with massive amounts of tourist. Still the place is just starting to fill up and table are available. -Asked the receptionist (with a earpiece that would only make a GAP employee jealous) if she had a table for 4. "Yes"~cool. "Head to the third floor with four or you will not get it. -went to the stairs to get the other three (not going to have my two kids wait by a bar-sorry) and went right to the third floor. -Found that the table was sold from underneath me to a party of 10! Fuck! "What do you mean that I have to check in with the 2nd floor first"~ to the third floor receptionist (apparently they try to make up for quality service with quantity--funny thing is that they can be replaced with a dry erase board and a marker) -went back to the second floor and demanded to speak to the manager. The receptionist that couldn't have been over 20 claimed to be her...funny, last I checked the manager was a man that was balding...oh that's right he was busy calling the bouncer (what restaurant has a bouncer anyway during dinner hours?) -Talked to the bouncer and explained that I wanted to talk to the manager about the table issue and the lying receptionist claiming to be the boss. I am done with this place....there are other places in newport that have far better food...and far better service.

This restaurant offers a variety of cuisines but I was not impressed with their food quality. The clam chowder was good but the breaded mushrooms filled with crab meat were soggy. The other two people in my group found the flavors in their salads to be strange: Cajun shrimp were paired with a sesame dressing and Chinese noodles. Hard surfaces also elevate noise level. Service was okay but not exceptional. Definitely not worth the money.

Eh...that about sums it up but I'll provide some more words to be useful: I was the receiving end of the Lobster Ravioli mentioned in a previous review but let me reiterate. Finding the actually ravioli beneath the vast ocean of "a light red sauce" (ERRONEOUS) was much like the Caribbean treasure hunt the kitchy menu implied. After locating said treasure I will admit it was tasty. The whole place was more or less an overpriced Applebee's with a decent wine list and seafood you can trust (as far as i know). They had "signature" beverages that came in obscenely huge glasses, which is typically a big red flag for me and it reads TACKY. It was also over run with college girls, the type that don't wear jackets when its pissing rain and 25 degrees and carry massive sparkley bags that scream class and allow one to question the credibility of their attendance at the bar...but I digress. Dessert was what one would expect at such a place....Large and average in creativity/quality. I will say however that our waitress was very nice and attentive, the place was clean, and the wine was good...thats all.

The customer service was pretty good. This place has decent price with good portion. The cocktails are tasty and good as well. The steak stuffed w lobster was surprising good, however the tuna steak turned out to be too well done, along with the rice and bean that was too mushy. But otherwise, it's not a bad restaurant. Has good hangout atmosphere for drinks, catchup and hangout.

This place was very decent. We had some majorly good cocktails and the prices here made me want to hug someone and cry. Lobster and steak for $35. The service was fine too. If you are making a proposal, by all means go the Moorings, otherwise, this is the place to eat a casual but hearty dinner while in Newport.

Friendly staff. Place was pretty crowded and loud but this is probably to be expected since it was Friday night in Newport. The buffalo fried calamari was bangin! I would definitely recommend that to anyone! My husband got the fish and chips which he said was sub-par and I got terriyaki chicken with rice and veggies which was delicious. All in all, it was a pretty good experience.

"Oh your parents are coming to town? So, you're going to the Red Parrot, then?" Those are nearly the only occasions that I've been to this place. It's a 3-star restaurant trying to pawn itself off as a 5-star one. The food's ok. I think the pizzas are decent. But this is one of those places that has so much shit on the menu that really don't do any one particular thing really well. It's generally ok, but it's not cheap, the service is pretty much "par" and etc.. A lot of people like to suggest this place because it's close to all of the horseshit on Thames St., but I think you can do better elsewhere.

This is only reviewing the bar. We only got drinks. On Saturday a group of me and my friends went down for the Louis CK show and we went early so we could do our own pub crawl and this was one spot we stopped. As soon as we sat down the bartender gave us a nice size sample of there Oreo mudslide. DELISH! After that I had the bloody mary and it was fantastic. We tried the ultimate margarita and that was really good to.

Visited twice during the week of 08/14/09. First visit was oysters, shrimp, crab, a bucket of steamers and a couple bloody Marys. Seafood was excellent and the bloody Marys were good. Second visit was another bucket of steamers along with a crab martini and another bloody Mary. The crab martini was a martini glass heaped with crab meat topped off with a lobster claw. Everything I had tasted good and fresh. Atmosphere of the red parrot is pretty cool as well. I wouldn't mind hanging out having a few beers and people watching.

While Newport is a great place to visit finding good food can be tough, but that is where the Red Parrot comes in. I have eaten here about 3 times. The food is generally very good and I have no complaints. Getting seated and served can be slow during the summer, but this is to be expected. Besides all the other good platitudes, the best thing about the Parrot are the oysters. The are superb, definitely better than Legal's

Great atmosphere combined with reasonable prices and a varied menu make this a must-go restaurant. Out lunch was was a perfect burger, a Chinese-themed chicken salad, and Sam lager on tap. Huge place, decent food, sloooooow service. Maybe it was just a bad day, but the service was awful and nothing about the food made up for the service. Further, a pet peeve of mine was that dont have brewed iced tea, just the fountain type, yuck.

We visited Newport over the Easter weekend and headed to the Red Parrot with 2 kids in tow. The food and service was excellent and the place is big enough that our noisy offspring didn't upset any other patrons (I hope). I had the baby back ribs which was enormous but I managed to get through the lot. My wife had a burger which was cooked properly and had good flavour. Unfortunately the kids menu was fairly limited and had the standard fair of chicken fingers, mac & cheese and hot dogs. Instead, we ordered off-menu a spaghetti marinara which the waitress was happy to do.

It's been a while since my dining experience at the Red Parrot, but I remember it rather well. My friend and I were visiting her brother (who went to RWU) who was staying in Newport for the summer. After walking around Newport for a while, we decided to get some dinner and drinks. This place was packed and we had quite a wait before we'd be seated, so we headed up a huge flight of stairs and over to the upstairs bar to indulge in some yummy concoctions. After making it to the table, we started off with Mucho Nachos which were mucho good - they must have been, because I can still remember them. I believe, I had the Portabella-n-Veggie Fajitas for my meal. I can't remember what my friends ate, but I do remember that we were all pleased with our Red Parrot experience. The menu was extensive and made up of several pages - like twenty - and was filled with all types of traditional American food, some of which included a touch of the Caribbean. The food alone earns three stars, while the fourth star gets picked up from a combination of things: good service, nice atmosphere, and menu variety.

Food and atmosphere were excellent. We sat down right away and got a nice window seat. Very cute place, although I think sometimes it can get pretty crowded in there. We had the oysters on the half shell and a caesar salad to start. If I were rating just the oysters, I would have given this place a 6. incredible oysters. These were the most enormous and best tasting oysters I've ever eaten. And I've never had oysters I couldn't eat in one bite before. Also the caesar was very very good. My boyfriend got the Mussels and Clams with linguine, which was only ok, was absolutely swimming in some kind of broth and was not served with parmesan (something he felt might have saved the dish). also, the waitress was not around to ask for any. This is why the Red Parrot only gets a 4. I had the Baked Stuffed Shrimp- Jumbo butterflied shrimp stuffed with crabmeat stuffing, served with fries and asparagus. The shrimp was really really good, loved the stuffing. Only problem was that $18 only bought me four shrimps, and despite being called jumbo, were very average sized. The oysters and salad were easily a 10, and the atmosphere was a 5, but my boyfriend's meal, the disappearing waitress, and the price/per portion of my meal bring that down to about a 4. Would definitely go again...they have a huge menu!

Service wasn't bad but not particularly great. No real complaints in that department. Menu has a huge and amazing selection. I was very happy about that. The drafts are slightly overpriced. I was not excited about that. The seating was right by the window with a cool view of the street. Oh yea the food... I got the boiled lobster and my date got the Black and White Tuna. The lobster was fantastic and the tuna was delicious and filling. I ordered the Shark Bites appetizer and loved it! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood or on vacation. Enjoy!

We went here for lunch on memorial day holiday weekend on a friend's recommendation. It was of course crowded, which is expected but what was not expected was the hostess/s attitude!!! As we enter and go up to the hostess and tell her table for 2, she sends us upstairs, where these 2 college girls are standing, talking to each other. When we tell them we need a table for 2 , we are told it is 15 - 20 minutes wait. I go back dowstairs to check if a table has opened up and the hostess downstairs says..I cannot take your name down but you can come back after 20 minutes and see!!! Whereas I see a clipboard with her with names of people and number of guests..I should have called her out on it!!! We go back up and they give us a buzzer that lights up 10 minutes later. When we go up to the stand, one of the hostess looks at the other one and goes " it's table...." and the other one shrugs her shoulders and the hostess says "follow me" and sits us right next to the bathrooms...it was stinking!!! We go back and ask for a different seat and then we get roll of eyes, a sigh and then we are asked to go upstairs. We were then seated on the 3rd floor near the window. Our server was friendly and prompt though the food took a long, long time to come. We ordered the catfish and sole sandwich for lunch. The sole sandwich was good but the catfish was all batter and barely any fish. The food was ok and was definately not worth any attitude at all!!

All of the times that I have been to the Red Parrot in Newport the food has been great! Both on dates and with my family it was enjoyable, the menu is huge, parking can sometimes be a little tricky! I would suggest this place to anyone going into Newport! Good prices and good bar! I did have one horrible experience with a waitress here, I hope she got fired cause my entire party was livid at her!

First place we ate after arriving. We sat in the corner window seat at street level and watched the crowd go by through the open window. Service was great. Thank you Rebecca! Swordfish Mediterranean was very satisfying. My wife ate every single rib (20) of the very tasty baby back ribs. We went back on our last day and had a late afternoon meal. Same table! A few drinks (red parrot rumbas and locally brewed beer for the red parrot), the seafood pupu (raw bar) and the Red Parrot version of lobster rolls with sweet potato fries. Again, good service--thanks Shannon. What a great afternoon! A&B

The Red Parrot was just what the doctor ordered the morning after the tsunamai that is hanging out with my friends who live out of the country. The only way to make up for so much lost time is to go completely wild. The only way to recover the morning after is to eat something hardy. Well, Red Parrot came through. However, you can pretty much get anything you want, heavy or light, since this place has a menu of biblical length. Seriously, in my somewhat damaged state of mind, the menu was so long that looking all the way through it was a chore of epic proportions. My food was quite good and I really enjoyed sitting next to a window and people watching as the ozone laden air wafted in to cool us off. It was a delight, really. As far as the other comments go, I didn't have a Bloody Mary, but I saw some folks drinking them and they did indeed look great.

We were not going to eat here because of some of the bad reviews, but a friend from work insisted we give it a try while in Newport. I am really glad we did. They have a nice variety of menu choices (wouldn't call it huge since most of the items use the same ingredients) and some fantastic seafood combinations that we have never seen before. I started off my meal with a Red Parrot amber ale, which is a beer brewed specifically for the restaurant by Newport Brewing Company (support your local breweries!!!) it was a good beer. For dinner I had the coconut shrimp rollup that had a spicy sauce with pineapples, mandarin oranges, field greens and avocado. It was damn good. My wife had a seared tuna wrap that had sesame noodles, mescaline greens, and wasabi mayo. She loved hers as well. For dessert we finished with the peanut butter puff pie which was also really good. I found the service to be great too, considering how busy it was in there. Overall a great experience.

Little background on The Red Parrot: The building is listed on the National Register of Historical Places in Newport. It was built in 1898 by John Alton Barker as a meat packing house, where it employed hundreds of people during the era known as "The Gilded Age". Through the years this building has housed a variety of eating establishments serving heads of state, diplomats, royalty, movie stars, the thousands of people visiting Newport each year... This place has a HUGE menu and features steaks, chops, seafood and chicken with a Caribbean flare to it. Delish. Be sure to check out their EQUALLY gargantuan list of bevvies! Lots of hot and cold drinks to wet your whistle...AND...the Red Parrot is within walking distance of many of the area's hotels and B & B's so you can go for a romantic dinner, stay for drinks and tumble back to your room for a little whoopee! I mean...you know, if yer into that. ;)

I was not impressed by the Red Parrot. Their menu is too big, &they need to narrow it down and concentrate on making a couple of good dishes. We sat at the bar to eat and the service was fine. Beers were fine, can't really screw that up! We ordered the Conch Fritter for an app. and they were burnt...I ordered the Jerk Chicken for my main course, and it was really dry. My friends weren't to crazy with their meals either. I wish I had read these reviews before I went! lol :-)

We sidled up to the upstairs bar of the Red Parrot and I treated my husband to his first-ever oysters and bloody mary. Boy am I glad we came here! We initially thought we would just start our night here with the previously mentioned yummies but the oysters were so big, and so good, and the bloody's so damn perfect, we wound up staying. A few beers and the rare tuna salad and lobster quesadillas later we left happy. If I could rate the food separately, I would give an enthusiastic 5 stars. High quality, low prices. However, the service was not good. Drinks sat empty for greater than 20 minutes at a time, and even were cleared away without asking if we wanted another! Same thing with the menus, they were just taken away with no inquiry about what we wanted off of them? Why did you think we had them in the first place? Great people watching, not many locals, but funny tourists (not unlike ourselves) to talk about. And when we were there, there were a few groups of very young girls who tried to buy alcohol, got carded, and all happened to "leave their ID's in the car" or wherever. Quite amusing, especially the second and third time this happened. All in all, a fun place!

Yes...a bit touristy, but....worth the trip. Great bar food and a nice location. A perfect place to start the evening with plentiful apps and a cocktail.

The store managers' attitude towards a complaint was non-accommodating and unfriendly. Without getting into specifics a Soprano-like behavior is not the manner I'd expect from a food service restaurant. Yet, mediocre food and service for the price paid. Just an average joint at best. I'm a regular visitor to Newport. Great town! This restaurant will not get another dime from me or anyone traveling with me. There are far better places around.

  • Kim P.

Go to the Red Parrot if you're looking for mediocre greasy bar food and a sticky place to bring you kids. It's packed with tourists. They do have good bloodies, though, hence the second star.

Don't waste your time or money here! I went for lunch and ordered the jerk chicken wrap with a side of coconut rice. I was the one who felt like a jerk and should have steered clear of the wrap. For anyone who has ever tried jerk seasoning, you know it has a distinct flavor with a base of all-spice. Whatever they put on the sandwich was basically reminiscent of BBQ sauce at best! The worst part was the coconut rice. It was plain steamed rice (undercooked) and they sprinkled some stale, dry coconut shreds on top of it. Lame. The waitress was snotty and acted put out when we asked for our check. Don't let the creative menu fool you. It's crap.

The only thing this place really has going for it is location. The food is average at best...i've been three times in the last two years and twice the entrees came out warm, not hot. Service was unven at best and on the way out my last time I stopped to talk with the manager (owner??) to alert him to some of the shortcomings my party had experienced...and he was an insufferable prick. Pass on this place.

The Red Parrot is awesome. Right downtown in Newport. Three floors of bars and tables. You can always get a seat here even on the very crowded summer weekends. Great for large parties. Great for lunch, dinner or just late night drinks. I highly recommend the RP to anyone who will be going down to Newport in the future. The prices are reasonable and the menu is the size of a book. There are so many good choices to choose from that I won't even try to list them here. A large assortment of beers and wines also. Plus a full bar. The pasta dishes are humongous. The seafood is great too. I stop here every time I go to Newport. You can't be disappointed in this place.

During a recent visit to the Red Parrot, 4 out of 8 of the group came down with a probably case of food poisoning within 30-45 minutes. When we returned to the restaurant to use their restrooms after getting sick, 2 of the 4 stalls were out of order (coincidence?). A guest in restroom indicated also that last year, they too got food poisoning after eating at the Red Parrot and had to pull over before even making it home. When asked to speak to the manager, we explained that we all got sick from their food. They essentially denied that it was due to them and said it could have been caused by anything from up to 3 days ago. Was it really just a coincidence that within an hour after eating there, FOUR out of 8 got sick? No refund or partial refund was granted. Poor Customer Service.

We took our children ages 23, 19, and 11 during Memorial Day Weekend. First we were told it would be a 45 minute wait, but our table was ready in 15 minutes. Menu was extensive. We ordered soups and appetizers and beverages. Everything was good except the Mucho Nachos which had way too mucho stuff piled on the top, so they were all soggy. We had a great table by the front window overlooking the street and harbor. Best meal of the weekend, so far!

Ok. We were looking for a reasonable dinner at the end of a long walking day and got the mediterannean pasta and the ribs. Both good--nothing amazing but solid.

I love this place! Its big enough to accomodate big parties without a huge wait and they have an extensive menu that has something for everyone. You can't go wrong with the area either.. once you are done eating you can stroll around Thames St and take in the sites of Newport!

Not the greatest food in the world, but it is a decent place to go with friends or family and centrally located to most of the touristy stuff in Newport. If you're going to spend $20+ per person, there are much better places in Newport.

  • Anna S.

I give the Red Parrot 4 stars mainly because of their drinks. Outstanding bloody mary! It was a cute little tourist spot to eat in Newport. It was highly recommended as a good place to go by the wharf. We were only there for the day, so I probably would have rather had lunch outside at the Black Pearl on the wharf had I seen it first, but the Red Parrot was great to dine at as well. Tourist, but the biggest selection of food you can imagine. The menu was a book, literally. Had the mussels- great. Had the clam chowder - good, but I like it thicker. Had the jamaican jerk chicken wrap - ok. Mimosa - fantastic (not all oj!). Bloody Mary - perfect! Portions were extremely generous. I would go back, but probably just stick with the seafood and cocktails.

when the locals raved about the menu being the size of a book, i immediately went for this restaurant first! they were right!! the menu was really overwhelming...not the ideal place to go if you are hungry and would wanna order everything on the menu... all i have to say is that their version of the lobster roll was divine! between my friends and i, it was the ultimate surf n turf experience... my friend was very pleased with her steak, while a couple of my other friends had the the fresh clam linguine and a couple of other seafood appetizers...it was the perfect meal after a long day of walking around town and all we wanted to do was relax....just beware though...there's a long wait on the weekends during prime dinner hours....but the service and food made up for it!

The Red Parrot is a convenient lunch-spot in the middle of Newport. The menu consists mainly of standard American fare, but with a Caribbean twist which makes for some interesting taste combinations. Add friendly service and moderate prices, and you could definitely do worse in the neighbourhood.

  • Jen E.

Touristy, yes, but family friendly. There was so much commotion going on the day we visited (a saturday afternoon and was BUSY) that it kept my 17 month old entertained which is hard to do! My food was good/OK, but I really loved the adult specialty frozen beverage that I had. Yum...

this seemed like a good spot, i went here once for a friends 21st birthday about 6 years ago, well i was not allowed back into the first bar after leaving to make a phone call, so we all stumbled over here, when ordering my friend pointed to his friend for a drink and as he pointed the friend passed out .... they kicked us all out!! the night got very interesting after that

The best meal I've ever had was here, when I first met my husband we came on our first date. I got the coconut crusted chicken with jasmine rice. I'll never forget it and my husband and I celebrate our anniversary there every year. If you make a reservation you seriously feel like the president getting a table as you walk in. They talk on the little walkie talkies and take you right away. We love the atmosphere and food never had a bad meal there. Then top it off with a walk down the strip with some gelato makes the perfect night out.

I have been to the Parrot many times when visiting Newport and have never been thrilled by the food or service, but it was always acceptable. However, the most recent time will undoubtedly be my last. My family and I (all of whom are of legal drinking age) were enjoying a cocktail before being seated at our table. Upon being seated we ordered another round of drinks and were asked for ID. No problems there until the waitress took my brother's ID and had it checked out. I remember thinking "thats odd since he already had been served at the bar, but no big deal." When the waitress returned she rudely informed us that my brother's ID was a duplicate card and therefore was not valid. You can imagine our surprise and frustration (especially since 2 others of us had used duplicate IDs) over this rejection. The manager eventually made his way to the table and made things worse by being completely condescending and rude. Apparently the Newport police had recommended that they not accept duplicate IDs, but it is not a law and my brother had all kinds of backup (he just turned 23!) What could have been a nice evening with my family was ruined by this jerk. We have all vowed never to spend a dollar in this establishment and I would urge you to do the same.

I went there a few days ago on a Tuesday evening just to check it out, I heard it was really good. I was really disappointed it was a slower night so u think everything Should come out great lol I was wrong. I ordered my gin and tonic it seemed very watered down, we had mussels for an appetizer it was mediocre to many capers which make it really acidic, just felt a little chewy over cooked and not as fresh as you would think being by the water, I ordered the blackened mako shark with jasmine coconut rice and green beans. Mako was very bland no salt and no heat once so ever, rice well over cooked not fluffy like jasmine should be and no coconut, last but not least green beans come on ice cold I was like wtf. My dinner partner felt hers was ok not horrible as she had the stuffed shrimp, her only complaint was that she thought the meal had been sitting under the heat lamps for a bit. My thought is menu is way to big. Focus on items that sell the most and work on them to make them great and forget the rest..

I have no idea why there are so many positive reviews for this place. It's a tourist trap, the service was terrible and the food left something to be desired. I ordered the Nachos, which I should have known better than to order Mexican food on the east coast, me being from Southern California. Needless to say they were horrific. Stale chips, nasty dry old tasting chicken and the best part they cost $20! My boyfriend had a lobster sandwich and he said it was tasty, not too much mayo and plenty of crab and the red parrot amber ale we had was good. Our server was not very attentive, we sat at the table for 10 mins or more before he came to greet us. In general it seemed like he just didn't care one way or the other. Next time, I'll take my chances with the nathans hot dog stand on the corner.

We got married in Rhode Island and wanted a simple meet and greet, nothing formal or pre-arranged. Everywhere we went they wanted us to get a separate room and get it catered, not what we were looking for. We waited until the last minute to book this because we THOUGHT it was no big deal. I did not realize that it was a huge deal. Until, the Red Parrot. They were super accommodating, provided us with what we wanted, a place for our friends and family to gather, eat if they wanted, drink if they wanted or just hang out. I have to say it was the best night of the entire weekend (other than getting married that is). Highly recommend this place. Service was great, ambience was perfect, staff was awesome. We had an awesome time and are very grateful they accommodated us at the last minute. THANK YOU RED PARROT.

Took a trip down to Newport with some friends and grabbed lunch here. They have a large menu including seafood, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, and salads. The best way to describe the place is a tourist restaurant. The food is good and moderately priced but nothing out of this world. If you are looking for a solid place in Newport to eat or grab a drink, give it a shot.

We came to Newport this time for the regional soccer tournament and we had a reservation for 35 people. At 4:30 we arrived and the entire party had to be present before they would seat us. I get that. World Cup was on TV and the second level bar was fine for the parents the we moved the entire party to the 3rd floor which was perfect size for such a large party. It took a bit to get enough tables for the team but that was the only delay. Food was excellent calamari salad , chowder and really the portions were large. We had plenty of cocktails to choose from and they were satisfying the breeze came in from outside and it felt like paradise. Have a try it will not disappoint. To keep your sanity go to the public parking lot and walk to the restaurant. You will love the views.

As much of the Newport lore as the mansions. Our friends who visit here as well all say you must stop here and honestly it's just average to me. The portions are decent but the menu is so eclectic it doesn't know what it wants to be. I found the same at other locations in Newport as well. The prices are a bit high as well, making it difficult to go there for more than one meal during our three days in town.

A summer is not complete without a trip here. The staff is a little snooty but the food has always been wonderful. I love the monsta lobsta blt, mussels, steamers. Its a very large place and very awesome if u can snag a Window seat.

Typical tourist trap...there are better options in Newport. Pros: Extensive menu, very nice interior, convenient location. Cons: So-so service, food was just adequate...price is high for what you get.

Many times I have dined in Newport and never stopped in and on this night I am glad I did. We started off with the nachos and the bruschetta with capers. For dinner we had the steamed lobster with jasmine rice and green beans (yum). The others had the surf & turf cooked to perfections. The drinks were great as well, I had the Mango

  • Arkangel R.

I ordered the lobster and sole which was good as was my wife's burger. They really need to work on their teasers though. We had a coconut chicken starter which is supposed to be seasoned with Cajun season and it was not and the person who made it is an amatuer. The breading came clean off with just a bite which implies that the cook didn't dry the chicken before coating it. Underneath the breading the chicken was flavorless. A roll around of salt and pepper before the flour works well FYI. The waitress asked if everything was okay and we told her about it and she said oh ok and left. A proper waitress would provide options: to replace it, get something else, or offer to take it off the bill. Hopefully her tip would have her reflect on that.

Went here for lunch today however after me and my girlfriend were seated the waitress arrived with waters. She spoke with a very soft voice, so soft that my girlfriend had to tell her she couldn't hear her. She walked away and ten minutes later she still hadn't come back yet. We got up and left, and even as we where leaving the hostesses at the front didn't stop us and ask why. So we went across the street to another place. Plus side: Good location Cons: Big menu, poor service and over priced

Haven't been here in quite a while but this weekend the BF and I decided to come down for dinner. He had never been here and like I said it had been a long while since I had. I used to love the place but it seems that the prices have gone up and it's not as good as I remember. A regular salad is around 12-14 dollars - That to me is a little crazy. I ordered the oysters. They were good and I think the price was ok $10/6. I also ordered a side salad which was Gorgonzola and mandarin oranges on a mesclun mix. It was ok. The boyfriend, a typical burger order-er, got the ribs and chicken. He said the ribs were good but the chicken was something he thought he could accomplish at home. We didn't order alcoholic beverages but the ones I saw floating around were huge. I also notices a few things that werent on the menu that I would have ordered if they were. No more conch fritters. Those used to be sooooooo good!

This place has always been one of my favorite in Newport. HUGE menu, food comes out fast and the service is pretty good. Try the Mahi Mahi, it's so good!

  • Meagan L.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Newport (I have a few...) Get the Blue Iron Steak (the Gorgonzola cream sauce is amazing!) Or the Mandarin Coconut Chicken. Or the lobster. And try the Swedish Fish. Not the candy. The drink. But it tastes just like the candy. I've never had to wait for a table. And the waitstaff has never left me disappointed. Some say it's a tourist trap. I disagree. The menu is so big, I really want to try other things. But I always play it safe and go with what I like.

    (5)
  • Robby S.

Fish and chips were disappointing. Tasted like the fish was frozen. I expect fresh fish being right by the ocean! Drinks were pretty good, but expensive. Seemed to be a big tourist trap. There are definitely better places in Newport.

    (2)
  • Steve F.

Bad enough that the place is a tourist trap, but the staff are nasty and difficult to boot. Any traveler with experience will see this place for what it is right off the bat - a centrally located tourist trap providing overpriced calories to hungry schmucks who don't know any better. It's located on the main drag in downtown Newport and survives because of this, the foot traffic volume is huge. But what really notches this dump to the bottom is the surly and sarcastic staff. Hostesses refuse to acknowledge people, lie about wait times and play with smartphones while on the clock. Waitstaff are clueless, clumsy, harried and unfriendly. Bartenders are indifferent and overworked, rude, and they make lousy watery drinks. The bouncers will actively try to start a fight with you at closing time, I kid you not. Just avoid this place if you can. They have been ripping off tourists for years and the locals won't set foot in this craphole.

There are so many restaurants in Newport and we ended up at red parrot because we were hungry and standing outside. The food was good. The menu is huge which makes it hard to choose. The desserts looked really good but we were so stuffed that we didn't get to order any.

    (3)
  • Nargis R.

My husband I stopped in for lunch and and then later on that night for drinks. The service was excellent both times. The lobster salad is delicious with just the right touch of mayo. Our waitress Megan and Bartender Nick were great!

We went here to watch the Patriots game at the bar. The lobster nachos exceeded expectations. The ahi tuna wrap was decent. My blackened Mahi-Mahi was a little bit overcooked. The dessert trio was great!

  • Barb D.

Eating at the Red Parrot was an experience. I had the clam chowder and the lobster nachos. The clam chowder was creamy and filled with tiny clam bellies. The potatoes were prominent. The lobster nachos was pretty good. The distribution of the lobster sauce was disappointing because they basically just put it on top of the nachos so mainly the nachos on the sides and the bottom didn't get that happy serving, especially because cheese cools down quickly. Water refills came in a timely manner. Aprox. 3 minutes for the waitress to realize we were empty on water and to refill our cups. I was pleased with that. She was also able to recommend certain main dishes and describe how they came. Overall a great place to experience the Newport cuisine.

    (3)
  • Jackie G.

Definitely get the lobster nachos! Out of this world and a huge portion with alot of lobster. Frozen drink I had was just ok. I wouldn't get it again. Ordered the Mahi Mahi with the coconut sauce. It was delicious but INCREDIBLY spicy for me. I had to remove the sauce in order to eat it. The atmosphere was really nice as well. Server was good, but a little flaky. We asked him to wrap up our lobster nachos and instead he threw them out. He did offer to make us a new batch though, which was good. We also asked him for some directions to find a liquor store and he sent us way out of the way. Overall though, we'd come back just for those lobster nachos!

This is my second time coming to this place and I can say with certainly that this is my favorite place in Newport. The places itself is not an eye popper nor does it contain a wow factor, however, the bartender in hands down the best I've ever had and they play consistent reggae music the entire time. Being Jamaican, this obviously makes me happier than a pig in .... So starting with he bartender... It's a always a good sign when you sit down and the first question you get asked is "what kind of drinks do you like?" Off the back this guy was ready to be creative and was looking for a reason to concoct a tailor made drink. In my case, I told him I like banana and rum, not sweet and preferably strong. He came back with some deliciousness that I wolfed down in 5 minutes and that pretty much sealed the deal for this place. We stayed there for the next 3 hours and had amazing drinks, listened to reggae music and met some really cool people. Both times I've been here, I've had the same experience with this bartender and the overall vibe has been awesome. This is my favorite bar in Newport and will be my first stop the next time I come. Five stars hands down.

Every time I have been here the food has been alright. Huge tourist mecca smack dab in the middle of Thames St. I agree with some of the other reviews on here where it's almost like an assembly line where they want you in and out as soon as possible, and I'm definitely more a woman of leisure. I definitely recommend the "Sweedish" Fish! Tastes exactly like the candy as well as the jerk chicken wrap. Anytime I see jerk chicken on a menu, I'm sure to order it since it always reminds me of the islands.

    (3)
  • Ruby D.

I have been visiting the Red Parrot for a while, I really loved the Jamaican Jerk salad because it came with shrimp. On Saturday my husband and I ate dinner there again, and my salad had no shrimp in it. When I asked the waiter why I didn't get any shrimp, he said the menu had changed and the salad no longer comes with shrimp. The cost of the salad is the same as without shrimp. I had actually said once before it was the best salad I had ever eaten. Now I am disappointed, it seems like the Red Parrot is cutting back. I feel ripped off now.

I visited during a recent trip during to Newport. The place was not as packed as sure it is in the summer but there still was a small crowd. I was surprised the service was so slow despite there being a small handful of people. Overall the food was pretty average, tasted fine and overpriced as I'm sure a ton of places are in the area.

    (3)
  • Jerry K.

I was pretty disappointed in the Red Parrot given the competition and host of other awesome restaurants you have to choose from in Newport. Predictable menu with food that really didn't jump off the plate at you. The atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired as well for a Newport establishment. I wouldn't really recommend the Red Parrot, but if you found yourself there you wouldn't necessarily be disappointed if you didn't know any better or hadn't been to any other places in town.

I came here with a bachelorette party; this place is great for groups! The service was quick and friendly and everything was really tasty. They actually forgot to put in one of our entrees, which ended up coming out ten minutes later, the server had the manager come over to apologize and they ended up comp-ing the meal. Definitely try the lobster pizza!

The Applebee's of Newport. For a little more money go to The Moorings or The Lobster Bar. Of course, if you want huge portions of so-so food... enjoy. The Dark & Stormy drinks were terrible.

My husband and I ate at the red parrot in Newport and overall we were pleased with our meals. We started out with the lobster nachos and my husband who is not a seafood fan ordered a bowl of chili. He did however have a few nachos and was impressed with the taste and he was also was very pleased with the chili, which was hearty and quite tasty. I was also impressed with the lobster nachos as I have never had lobster and nachos together but the red parrot made it a very tasty combination! For our entrées we ordered the veggie pizza, which consisted of mushrooms sun-dried tomatoes and various vegetables topped with cheese, my husband was pleased with the taste and the consistency of the pizza dough was soft but crunchy. I ordered the mahi-mahi which also came with some seafood stuffing and I requested a side of sweet potato mash instead of the rice. The mahi mahi and the seafood stuffing were great, but I was not impressed with the mashed sweet potatoes...they almost tasted as if they came out of a jar kind of like baby food, very bland. Overall we were happy with the meal and we would definitely try the Red Parrot again next time we visit Newport

It was good. The server was really sweet. We ordered the surf and turf as well as a bowl of clam chowder. My fiancee had serious agita after eating here--not sure where that came from, but he was burping for hours. Slightly overpriced for what it really is, there wasn't too much "surf" in our meal. And it was all claw meat, which my fiancee doesn't enjoy. The filet was so tender and melted in our mouths. The clam chowder was pretty good, too. It was good in the sense that we had to walk maybe 500 steps to get here from our hotel and didn't have to wait at all. Plus the view from where we were sitting wasn't bad either!

During my second trip to Newport a couple of weeks ago, grabbed lunch here on Saturday after doing a mansion tour. The place was packed, but a short wait as this place is huge & seems to have three seating levels. Had a round of beers, and I had the Blackened Mahi sandwich for lunch. It was really yummy. My friends got salads which were also good. The service this time however.....was mediocre.

The lobster pizza and clam chowder was awesome !! My girlfriend had the mahi mahi with rice and I definitely chose the better out of the two entrees. The rice was a little dry. They have their own beer made locally which was really good as well.

Great restaurant with solid service and food. Recommend the mussel/oyster stew in tomato broth, as well as their sangria

Excellent seafood! Lobster casadias, salmon, mako shark everything was delicious! Fresh side dishes tasted like they came right out of the garden and on to the plate. Very casual. Bar type setting so be prepared for some background noise.

Great food and a great environment. Loved how the windows were open, it gave a nice tropical feel. Would definitely eat here again next time I'm in town.
