we attended the murder mystery train. it was alright but didn't think it was worth the money. i would not recommend the murder mystery train ride for children as for some of the jokes were a little bit too much. the acting was okay for what it was. the show itself seemed kind of rushed and boring. the food was pretty decent though i have been on dinner trains with better meals. they do have cool named drinks like the fuzzy conductor! if you love trains, then i would give it a shot. if you are looking for an exciting place to have dinner i would look else where.

We bough the tickets on Guilt City for 100$ but once we were leaving we had to pay a "Guilt City" tax of $23.00 so it was not such a great deal after all. The food was good. The chicken and ribs were actually very great. We had a bottle of wine which was about 26$ so it wasn't too bad. The scenery was not too bad, although we were sitting next to the window not facing the Bay so we saw a lot of trees and parking lots. The train ride is only 2 hours instead of 2.5 which was a little upsetting. The mystery was absolutely terrible. Disappointed :((

The Polar Express - after reading mixed reviews I was worried about this experience for my 5 year old -am I glad we did it. Some don't know the dinner train was recently sold - under new management this polar express was fantastic. The conductor read the story with the help of jingle santas elf... A wonderful Mrs. Claus passes out cookies and hot Chocolate .. the Stowaway from the story comes around and sings carols with the entire car joining in for the fun. Santa comes and every child gets a personal visit and gift. My son LOVED it and that's what it's all about. Every character was awesome when it came to taking many many pictures with the children! QUICK TIP: Bring little snacks as food is not offered other than the hot chocolate and cookie. Can't wait to make this an annual event! Our only complaint as a parent was the " north pole " was a little lacking, and I had to explain the boat yard we passed were for santas elves to get to workshop every day - however my child seemed overjoyed with it and continues to regale everyone on his trip to the north pole in a magic train...

My family went on the ice cream train last year and we were happy. We were looking forward the the same experience this year. Unfortunately, today's adventure was three hours my family will never get back. A one and a half hour ride turned into a three and a half hour debacle. Ice cream was less than last year. The style went from good to nothing. To say we will never come back is an understatement. My son did enjoy sounding the conductor's horn, which was the only new addition. Other passengers were livid. They should provide the ice cream to the children before feeding every adult. What a disappointment. After I left a message of my compliant the owner refunded my money and blamed technical problems

I went with a group of friends for a birthday on the dinner train. It was lots of fun! Actors were funny & food was surprisingly good. I ordered a vegetarian meal and it was tasty. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The story line was a little wonky but the actors' odd personas made up for it. It was a lot of fun.

We attended the Mystery Dinner. I would do this again if there was no show. The food was good, the train is beautiful and the ride is nice. However the show was a bit off color at times with added sexual and racial jokes; not appropriate for children at all. The cast spent most of the time screaming their lines.

I'm very surprised by the other reviews of the dinner train. I had a great experience. Sure, it was a little hokey. Yes, they DID run out of toilet paper (how does that happen?) but otherwise, it was all-in-all a great experience. My boyfriend took my for our 6 month anniversary. It was a sweet, thoughtful and different thing to do. I was impressed (maybe more with him and the originality of the gesture, but impressed regardless). The food was was good, not great, but it was good. I had never been a part of a murder-mystery themed anything, so it was interesting and funny. Once we got out of the less than desirable part of Newport along the train's route, it was beautiful. It was sunset, the lights from the Newport Bridge were sparkling and we rode along the water in a candle-lit dining car. What's not to like about that?!

Had that nice trip back in September.I bought it for my boyfriend as a birthday present,he was really excited. We didn't get lucky with the weather,it was raining, but the atmosphere was really romantic,we had a table next to the window, food was good too, wine was awesome too, staff was really friendly.I don't have anything bad to say about this trip,I enjoyed,it's good for a change, good for people, who wants to do smth special and bored with regular restaurants:)Enjoy it,be open,I read a lot of bad reviews about it too before going, but you need to experience it and have your own opinion;)

We have had the sunset dinner on this train several times. After first learning about the train on the TV Food Network we went and thought they did a great job with the food - especially considering the kitchen constraints of the train. The ribs fall off the bone and are very flavorful. Other items we have tried have been similarly solid. Keep in mind that this isn't the 5 star upscale foodie experience, but for the combination of hospitality, nostalgia, food, and relaxation/water view factors I give it this high rating. I would acknowledge that healthy portions of the ride do not have beautiful water views - the rails run where they run, but there are some beautiful views and we have been lucky enough to see some beautiful sunsets over the water from the train. I can't speak to the "performance act" rides referred to in some other reviews - just the sunset dinner. It seems to me that a train would be a tough space to pull off any performance so my expectations would be mitigated going in. As for the sunset dinner they had very nice place settings, reasonable wine selections and well prepared, tasty food.

Just returned from the lunch train, celebrating my husbands 70th birthday. . The food was good (It's not a restaurant quality, but you can only work within the kitchen prep area available), but the service and helpfulness of our server, Brian, was wonderful. I have degenerative arthritis in both knees and "Brian" retrieved the "3-step stool" to make it easier to get up the stairs in to the dinning car. This made the experience very memorable. I highly recommend his ride for a fun, different thing to do. Would difenately go again, maybe the sunset ride next time

We purchased 18 tickets for a family holiday celebration. From beginning to end The Polar Express was a complete NIGHTMARE. Please do not waste your money on this.

Wow, what a joke this dinner train in. Purchased a voucher from Gilt City for a private table for 2 on this dinner train.. We could choose from the Mystery dinner or Romancing the Rails. Fiance did not want to do the mystery dinner, so when I made the reservations, I specified that we want to do the Romancing the Rails...Well, they screwed that up and before we realized what was happening, the acting started and we were unable to leave the mystery dinner train. (more on the mystery later) Our "private table" for 2. I was thinking this was going to be a nice tabling facing each other where we were see the views from the train but nope. You are facing the group tables for 4 with your back again the window. "Nice view" of everyone eating and the water in the background. Back to the mystery, the acting was SO bad. The jokes were lame as they were the sexual or racist type. Cheap laughs. The only thing I will say though is that due to the terrible acting and jokes, it distracts you from seeing what you are really riding through. But fiance and I made sure to look around, so see if we could see anything worthwhile. You drive by the water and see a few naval ships but nothing too crazy. The side where our backs were, its all lots of buildings. The food. It was terrible. the baby back ribs were ok but smothered in BBQ sauce. the chicken was disgusting with some sort of orange sauce. I couldn't even eat this and ended up trading dishes with fiance and forcing the ribs down, so I wouldn't go hungry. The dessert was probably the best thing. A simple light cheesecake type but was not made with cream cheese. The staff did a pretty food job at clearing our plates with the actors in the way and all. The highlight was on our trek back, we decided to face the other way, and saw mattresses lined up in the woods under a bridge and a group of young ppl sleeping and chilling playing on the guitar! Such a luxurious life the bums live in the greenery of Newport. Overall, I can't believe how much I spent on this. It is not worth a penny. I rather would have taken the money and gone to a nice dinner elsewhere or find a real dinner train.

If I could give this experience a no star I would. Took 4 small kids and their moms on the Polar Express on 12/15. You have got to be kidding me...this was all about selling food. They read the book over a very poor sound system making it hardly audible. It was lost to the kids. They passed out cheap bells and unwrapped cookies that looked like soft baked chips ahoy, and hot chocolate in generic disposable cups. Mrs Clause told the kids not to slip on the ice... Seriously??? Santa was OK but he was with the kids for a few minutes. The conductor didn't talk to the kids but instead made a comment about being at foxwoods the night before. Towards the end a woman came in and said we were going to sing and I that we were not going to use the sound system so if we were not singing we could not talk!!! She never smiled....seemed flustered. The ride was too long. The last 1/2 hr as we creeped on the track the staff picked up. Nothing happened, kiss cried and rolled on the floor. It was horrible. The train was full of screaming kids. I took the same group on the Woonsocket ride the two previous years. It was awesome in every way this ride was lacking. I waited too long to get tickets this year. When I called Newport the guy told me it was better, less expensive and they served food..(all about food). Next year I will gladly pay extra to go to Woonsocket. If I cannot get tickets on that train we won't go.

Let me start by saying its weird to me that this place has dozens of reviews on yahoo, urban spoon, google etc but none here on yelp. At any rate... it was a friend's birthday and this was the perfect venue for a celebratory dinner - especially for a train enthusiest. This is a step back in time to fine dining on an elegant train. The trip is an 11 mile stretch of track along Narragansett Bay offering nice waterfront views as you dine. The trip is a down-and-back situation (not a loop, 22 miles round trip) so everyone gets a forward and backward travel experience. The ride is very comfortable and smooth. The cars are actually very quiet and there are sound dampening barriers every two tables to cut down the surrounding conversations. The track is mostly level however there are a couple of points where the car leans to one side. This only adds to the experience and authenticity. You must make paid reservations (including choosing your entree) in advance over the phone. Upon arrival you will learn your seating assignment. The schedule is perfect. Drinks, salads, bread etc.. all come out at appropriate intervals. I had the rack of bbq ribs and they were AMAZING. The meat literally fell off the bone. Delicious. The mashed potatoes were good as well. The string beans were a little over done though. Dessert was cheesecake which was decent. Its a nice nostalgic dining experience. I recommend.

I was on the Polar Express last night (12/21/2014) with my sister's family for the 4:30 pm ride. I hadn't been before and was looking forward to it since the kids were so excited. Well the first half of the trip was fine. We sang Christmas songs, had warm chocolate and the kids got to talk to Santa. The hobo on the train didn't know many Christmas carols and was a little too sarcastic for the crowd. The Santa on the train was very good especially since he was trapped with us for over three hours. YUP! The train broke down twice on the way back to the station. Let's start with the lack of communications by the crew to the fact we had to get off the train three miles from the station to be taken back to our cars to come back to the train to get the rest of the family. No one knew who was paying the cab to take us back to our cars and I gladly offered to pay for my cab ride to just end this "fun". By the time we got back to Barrington (only 20 minutes away) it was after 9 pm - everyone was hungry, tired and lacking Christmas cheer. I had another one hour drive to get home that night. Be advised to not spend your money here. Try one of the other trains in the area next holiday season.

I would advise any person thinking about this to find something else to do. Most of the time spent on the train you are going through weird apartment buildings and empty lots. You do get to see some of the water but it is not exciting or picturesque in any way. They serve food on paper plates with plastic utensils. It was about 8 bucks for a hot dog if you dared try the food. If you do go on this, make sure you have great company and have conversation prepared!

Overpriced and not worth it. Bad food. Bad show. Bad ride.. Unless you like bushes filled with poison ivy. Won't be back.

I didn't order any food and opted for just the train ride since my son (2 years) is very much into trains. The scenery is okay. You spend the first part of the ride along/inside the Newport Naval base. The views of Narragansett Bay are much nicer near the end. What was really great was the customer service. The conductor (manager?) was very friendly upon check-in. I expected to be ignored by the wait staff since we didn't purchase a meal on the dinner train (Is that ironic?), but they were happy to check up on us and offer to sell us drinks. What was really great was the manager came by with complimentary ice cream cookie sundaes for my two kids, who were thrilled. They also did not make me feel uncomfortable after my kids managed to scatter crumbs everywhere or play with their toy trains. Afterwards, my husband took my son to meet the engineer who happily chatted with us. Would I do it again? Probably not, but I don't regret paying for the tickets. It accomplished the goal of making the kids happy and letting them ride on the train.

I experienced Romancing the Rails with my parents and my fiance. There wasn't really anything majorly romantic, but the ambiance and music was nice. The views, as many other reviewers have said, were not good. Specifically, we drove by trash, a little bridge underpass where a man was sleeping, and the only scenery we enjoyed was a woman and her little girl waving to the train from their backyard, and then a bit of the ocean toward the end of the trip. The most exciting thing for me was trying to walk down the hallway of the train to reach the restrooms without falling face-first into someone's entree. I thought the stuffed sole was delicious, but the ribs and chicken vanderbilt that others at my table got were only ok. For the price, i expected much more from the whole experience. I definitely wont be going again, but am glad I got to try it out for myself.

This was by far the best dinner I have had in Newport since I moved here in March. It was so much fun! My husband did the "Romancing the Rails" theme, and I was so surprised at how quaint and warm this experience was! I was a bit hesitant after reading some of the reviews on here, but now that I have experienced it myself, I am a firm believer that you NEED to try this! Once the train arrived, we were escorted to our train car and the place was set up so nicely! There were NO paper plates! In fact, they had these huge glass plates, that once seated, they take from your table to start placing your dinner on! The ambiance was so romantic and I was really surprised that it was not as busy as I had anticipated! The service is so great! Everyone is friendly, helpful, and their attitudes just add to this wonderful experience! The food was great as well! I ordered the chicken dish and I thought it was cooked perfectly! The sauce on it was delicious and is something I am going to try to recreate at home! Now, the scenes! The train runs along Narragansett Bay and diners are able to experience wonderful, picturesque scenes! Since I live in Newport, I did not see anything new, but it is still cool to see these things from a train while experiencing a great meal! My husband and I plan to return to experience the Broadway themed dinner! I am so excited!!! This is a MUST experience!!
