CASH ONLY!! I love a good diner. Hit it three times over an 8 day period, one could say the Handy in the name is true. Local establishment full of locals. Nothing extravagant just simple straight forward food for a great price. CASH ONLY!!

CASH ONLY CASH ONLY CASH ONLY CASH ONLY DID I SAY CASH ONLY YET gary's was a nice and pleasant breakfast/lunch place to satiate your hunger. the menu selection is just a-ok; there's your omelettes, your pancakes and your sandwiches, and that's pretty much it. but when food is this cheap and service was so fast on such a popular and busy street, who am i to complain? i got the blueberry and peach pancakes from their specials board and definitely scarfed those 3 pancakes down in a new york minute. i don't feel guilty at all: the cakes were nice and fluffy, and there was a lot of fruit and an (un)healthy amount of whipped cream. nom. contrary to other reviews, we got our food served to us really quickly on a sunday morning (mother's day, no less). the two cooks look like my standard veteran's patients: 60-70 y/o white male who do their jobs and don't complain. you can see just how quickly they're whipping up your food because the kitchen is wide open and clean. we weren't discriminated, either: my table consisted of two asian americans, one caucasian, and one indian-american, and we all got the same quality service. tl;dr: simple, good, cheap, diner food. cash only

Simple and basic American breakfast. I got the spinach, bacon, mushroom, onion and cheese omelette with a side of homefries. Homefries were delish! But the omelette had too much bacon for my liking so it was on the salty side. Service was good. Just a nice spot to grab a quick bite. Nothing special.

First off it's CASH ONLY! Good to know. Second is that everyone needs a good greasy breakfast in Newport with the amount of drinking we all do right? No brainer. Well this place will fix you up. Basic solid breakfast on the menu and that's what you will get. Good service from a very pleasant staff. Can get crowded if you wake up too late. Grilled muffins are my hangover cure!!!

It's muggy in Gary's and there is no AC. Our waitress had an attitude, and not a good one. The food may be a good price but that's because it's greasy and bland. It's true when people say "you get what you pay for." I got the tuna salad club. It wasn't tuna "salad," just tuna. And it came with 4 tiny quarters, practically bite size. Plus a pile of greasy fries dumped in the middle, which by the way didn't come with the sandwich, they had to be purchased separately. My boyfriend got a Reuben sandwich, which was so greasy it was dripping. My boyfriends mom got an omelette that she did not like at all. None of us will return.

we wanted to go to another place but it was closed for the winter. who knew. so we decided to just find a spot to park and walked to the closest diner and Gary's was it. divided by locals vs. tourists. cute vintage look to it and price was not bad at all! we got the pancakes which were just pancakes, the omelette which was fairly packed, and the home-fries which tasted like home fries. nothing TOO spectacular but if you want something fast before you go explore newport come here.

  • Michael M.

I love this place. Besides the great post party breakfast and awesome grilled muffins, you get service with a huge SMILE! You can just feel the family atmosphere and old school Newport charm coming through. My favorite.

  • Kate T.

Simple, blue-collar, no fuss. The menu is literally like 6 breakfast items, a handful of burgers etc, and not much variety. Probably best when you've got a buzz or a hangover. Just don't have any expectations, and don't order the iced coffee water.

  • Charlie T.

Service was extremely slow and everything was sticky. Food was Meh. Only is business because of where they are. Won't be back

It's so simple it's great. I sometimes get anxiety when handed a large menu but Gary's has a very simple menu. They usually have specials on the board but they always have great breakfast food and sandwiches. The food is so simple that it is great. There is no need to mess with a good thing. The interior is awesome, old Coke products and the wrap around counter. The staff is fun too, they interact with you and everyone is friendly. It's a simple place.

Yum. My broccoli sausage and mushroom omelette was DELISH, great service, family atmosphere. We will be back!

Would bump up to four stars for better cheese selection on the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. No cheddar? Unfortunate. Otherwise a solid spot. Service is extremely prompt and friendly.

My wife and I were looking for something quick, good and inexpensive for lunch. We found it here and more. We had hamburgers, fries and the best ice coffee we have had in ages, it put dunkin's to shame! The waitress was pleasant and efficient. The burgers were cooked to perfection, the fries hot and crispy. The total bill with a generous tip was less than $ 15.00

Uh greasy food is greasy food but some of the waitstaff is greasy personalities. Being treated differently then white customers is a shame. Especially considering newport is founded on the back of enslaved child labor. Please educate your wait staff of what entitlement is and what treating humans is like and please train them on how to handle diversity or tolerate it until they are alone to make snide comments! I'll never come here because of hearing my African American friends treatment here. I hope you customers press this place to hire new waitstaff with hearts instead of entitlement issues,

Cash only, they do have an ATM inside in-case you forget. The cast of folks that work here are amazing. They are friendly and out to please. Then again they are all family or have been friends for well forever. The food is great. not a big menu which makes it a ease to order. Oh on fridays is fish and chips day. if you miss it you have been warned lol.

A bit saltier than I'd like but I also eat pretty bland foods. I have to say the customer service here is awesome, the waitstaff and counter help were so nice and attentive to customers, striking up conversations and making us feel very comfortable. I'd come back for affordable eats.

Can I rate zero stars? Nice enough service but food was lacking. Runny eggs and watered down coffee put a damper on the morning.

Very simple, delicious food. Staff was super friendly. Pancakes were spot on, my husband got the blueberry pancakes and was pleased to have actual blueberries mixed in, not a too sweet compote on top. Eggs we're cooked perfectly. A great breakfast joint!

We were going to go to Brick Alley Pub for an early lunch before more mansion tours, but felt kind of awkward walking in there at 11:30 AM. I remembered that Gary's had pretty good reviews on Yelp, and we decided to check it out. We walked in, and right away it was clear that this is a local's place. We were told to sit wherever we wanted, and right there on the table was the small menu of cheap items. I don't even know if I've ever seen every item on a menu for less than 10 dollars. I got a little nervous seeing how cheap everything was, but like others have said before, this is the kind of place where the food seems like you made it yourself at home. I ordered a BLT with fries, my fiancee ordered eggs with hash and a bagel. The bacon was cooked perfectly, and it was slapped right onto some Wonder Bread, which was great. No frills, nothing. He devoured his meal as well. The Coke came in a can, and that was awesome too. The service was perfect. All of the waitresses looked like they were at home with their fleece sweatshirts. Ours asked where we were from and we talked Hurricane Sandy with her. So far, at a whopping 19 dollars, this was the cheapest meal in Rhode Island by far. If you're looking for a good, quick bite--stop here!

You are not a real Salve Student until you go to Gary's at 5am in the morning after raging all night and if you're from Salve and you're reading this, YOU KNOW IT"S TRUE. Greasy spoon, favorite breakfast things, and honestly, the nicest people in town run this place. I'd say I go for the food and the hysterical cooks who keep me peppy in the morning. Locals only!

Nice little place. Diner feel, simple, good food. Quick service, great prices. Would definitely come back.

We went for breakfast and it was awful. BF's omelet was so watery he ate 3 bites and was too disgusted to continue. The mushrooms and spinach should have been sauteed before being added to draw out some of their moisture. They were not, so the whole thing was sitting in a pool of about a quarter inch of liquid by the time it came to the table. My bacon and cheese omelet was gross too. The bacon in the omelet wasn't bacon. It was, as another reviewer mentioned, the crumbles that come in a jar that you sprinkle on a salad. The potatoes were soggy and greasy. The toast was the most edible thing on our plates. Coffee was diner coffee. Table was sticky. Service was friendly. The worst food I've had out in a long time.

  • Adam M.

Great greasy spoon, exactly what I wanted for breakfast. Good coffee, always full. Most of the people know each other. The chourico and home fries were great, my wife had eggs over medium, done perfectly. This is one block from our house, we will be back.

Gary's Handy Lunch is Lower Thames's answer for a breakfast greasy spoon. They serve a no frills, tasty breakfast without breaking the bank. If you're on your own or with one other person, it's worth your while to sit at the counter. The wait staff takes care of your party right away and you get to watch the cooks master the art of making your breakfast. When I say no frills, I mean don't expect your french toast to come out with huge sweet bread slices decked in walnuts, strawberries, and whipped cream. Expect it the way you may make it at home for yourself: wonder bread french toast, which I think is actually the best anyways! Among other things, they most certainly mastered the art of pancake making too: perfectly round and just the right thickness. They are decked the stars because it isn't the cleanest on busy summer mornings. It definitely isn't because they are sloppy, but just a reflection of high traffic that bustles in and out and probably not having enough staff or time between customers to handle it. It's okay, I'm sure you all can handle a paper straw wrapper laying around here and there! Still, if you're looking for cheap breakfast on Lower Thames, this is the best bang for your buck. It's rare that a place down this way doesn't charge you an arm and a leg for food so enjoy this place that's loved by both locals and tourists alike.

Can we say perfect breakfast-after-a-late-night spot? So delicious and cheap! Very cute little 50s diner style atmosphere. I got an omelet special which had sausage, broccoli, mushrooms and cheese. It came with homefries (some of the best I have had) and toast. It was very filling and really hit the spot. Everything looked so good I had a hard time deciding what to get. I will definitely go back to this palce when I return to Newport

FYI: They only take cash, and when I was there, the onsite ATM was broken. Probably wise to have some case before you go in. Decent prices and the food was tasty. Nothing to fancy, and not a huge selection on the menu. I was a little disappointing that they we're serving lunch at 11:30 am, but I enjoy breakfast food too, so no big deal.

Unlike many reviewers, we actually stopped by for lunch, and we were very happy with it. The food was very fairly priced and definitely recommended if you are looking for a nice local diner to stop by on your visit. We ordered some of the specials and were very pleased with that we ended up receiving. In all we ordered the delicious very causal sandwiches and hotdog, and for the special the very good calamari and fish and chips. I definitely recommend getting any of these dishes! The staff was very friendly and nice and the diner itself was very cute and nicely decorated with the retro look going on! We very much enjoyed it as a whole family, and definitely recommend stopping by.

Thankfully, we weren't looking for any gourmet and satisfying meal. We were about to go see the Vanderbilt Mansions and wanted something in our tummys. I had a fried egg sandwich that my 4 year old nephew could have made more tasty and Buddha had ham and grilled cheese. He didn't like his and mine sucked. I mean how can you not put butter on the toast of a fried egg sandwich? The bread was thin and flavorless.

If it sounds too good to be true.....guess what ....it is. I like diner and good comfort food once in a while. My husband and I stopped in for lunch today and had 2 of the interesting sounding specials, stuffed peppers and shepherds pie. Huge portions of slop. Canned mushy string beans, soggy stuffed pepper with a fill of gloppy rice. Shepherds pie 99% potato with 4 coronals of corn and a tablespoon full of hamburg each costing $6.95. Save your money and eat somewhere else. This place sucks.

Awesome greasy spoon. Inexpensive, but solid tasty food. Not the most amazing restaurant, but you won't sell your first norm to eat there!

This place is a huge Coca-Cola ad. They're unironically kitchy. Actually, this is one of the most self-unaware restos I've ever been to. That said, their food is cheap! But you get what you pay for. My $4 egg salad sandwich tasted horrible and had a slight sulfur smell. I took one bite and stopped eating. They didn't ask if anything was wrong--- but I really didn't expect them to. Their coffee was the standard bean water served at cheapie places all over. I left hungry and disgusted---- but also amused. I should've known better!

Newport's local greasy spoon. Cute retro décor with old signs and Coke machines from the 1950's. Basic breakfast served on paper plates but the price is right. Parking can be dicey so grab whatever spot you can find as you approach the area and just walk the couple of blocks. Local crowd.

Had breakfast here this morning. My son and I sat at the counter so we could watch Gary work his magic on the grill. I had a bagel with bacon, egg and cheese (no home fries) for $3.50 My son had the blueberry pancakes for $5.25 Loved the bagel because they actually toasted it before they threw the egg and cheese on it. My pet peeve when I order any kind of sandwich is untoasted cold bread with warm filling. It was really yummy and and how can you beat the price. My son had 3 pancakes that were HUGE so huge they hung over the plate. Real blueberries inside and very fluffy. He loved them. We walked out of there stuffed for under $12. Really remarkable for Newport. Side note: okay so the counter wasn't spotless and I ate by a stack of dirty dishes but that's not enough to keep me from coming back. It has an air of homeyness about it. Looked like my moms kitchen after cooking breakfast for the family.

I have eaten here many times, this place packs a really good quality, homemade breakfast or brunch considering what they offer, the food is made in front of you. Myself and family have enjoyed this place on many occasions. We will return, the only downside is it's usually full and there may be a slight wait, but well worth it for the area and cost is very reasonable, friendly family run place.

This place never lets you down. Consistent, fairly clean, nice employees, quick and delicious diner food. I always come here for breakfast and am never let down by the place. 2-2-2 is great, 2 pancakes, 2 eggs 2 strips of bacon or sausage. Always has good specials-- dont spend your money at anywhere else for Newport breakfast other than this place

Gary's Handy Lunch is a sweet spot to grab a good and inexpensive breakfast or lunch. The first few times I came here were for breakfast, which I enjoyed, but it wasn't till I came for lunch that I became a big fan. My go to order for lunch is a hamburger, fries and a coke. For not being known for their burgers, they knock it out of the park. It comes to about $6 and change and can't be beat! The service always rocks and Gary cooking behind the counter in his Crocs never fails to make me smile. Good stuff, check it out.

I cant believe they pass any health code. I watched the short order cook stick her ungloved hand into the french toast batter slap the bread on the grill then with the egg batter all over her hand turn and grab and open an english muffins to put in the toaster then still not washing off her hands went right on cooking and touching everything. It was just dirty. I will say they are fast with the food but at what cost.

Great breakfast & Lunch. Best deal in downtown Newport!! Fast service too. Looks like a 1950's style dinner. So cute. Go off peak hours so you do have to wait. Pretty small place.

Had the misfortune of having breakfast here (1st Sept 08). Unfortunately I took a seat where I could see the food being prepared and observed some very dubious standards of hygiene being exercised by the guy preparing the food. When my breakfast arrived it looked absolutely horrendous (see picture) and didn't taste much better. All in all a thoroughly unpleasant experience. On the plus side it was fairly reasonably priced, although my money would have better off being invested in a Sausage & Egg McMuffin down the road.

Well, if all you have is $3.25 to your name you can still get two eggs, home fries and toast at Gary's. That's a pretty smokin' deal. I'd advise you though to not look around too much - I found the place kind of dirty, and although Gary looked swank in his t-shirt, shorts and crocs at the grill - it seemed to me that closed-toe shoes ought to be required back there. Also there were food bits everywhere behind the counter, I understand they're busy and such, but I'll pay an extra $0.50 on my meal if they'll hire someone to keep that business clean back there. The folks that work here are super nice, I had conversations with them while the food was being cooked - very personable, I can see how someone could become a regular at this local "choke and puke". Most amusing moment: at the counter there was an old guy who looked very recently drunk, if not drunk at that very time in torn homeless-style clothes sitting right next to some dude with an ascot and probably a Bentley outside. WORLDS COLLIDE! I might give this a whirl for lunch sometime, but I don't think I'll add it to my breakfast rounds.

Gary's is a cute little diner. The food is delicious, the service is great! My husband & I come here when we are enjoying our timeshare. A particular waitress remembers us each year! What a nice touch! We recommend this diner! Enjoy! Reasonably priced for Newport :) Cash Only!!

  • Dave K.

Handy's rocks. The food isnt complicated or pretentious. The price is right. The service is quintessential "Newport local" ("Settle down. Your food will be here soon enough.") The people watching is as good as it gets. Millionaires, sailors, college kids, blue collar workers, tourists, and the occasional little league team. I love this place.

Ew Ew Ew! I know I'm spoiled with being from the west coast where we have in and out and amazing burgers, but I am so grossed out by my food and service I have to share. First of all, for a place who advertises coke, they have cans, not fountain! Second, our cans were covered in dirt and has to be sent back for new ones. We ordered burgers and fries, the fries were not edible and tomato was 50 extra cents to add to the burger. All and a we paid $20 for food that was sick and wrong and overpriced. Don't eat here... But really...

I love Gary's Handy Lunch! I used to come here maybe 3-4 times a week when I lived in RI and my boyfriends apartment was pretty much right across the street. Every time I go home, I make sure that I get in there at least one to see the girls and Gary that took care of us for so long and so many visits. I love the chorizo, jalapeno onion and pepper omelet and we have been spoiled that we use their home fries are always what we use as a basis in the new breakfast places that we go to. I miss the Friday Fish and Chips! Garys has a cool diner feel- and even when it is crazy the service always seems to be right on top of what is going on. When you are in Newport and looking for a good breakfast place- Garys is the spot!

  • Jim R.

The decor and feel of this place is great - coke themed advertising from the past several decades. Looks like a great 50's neon diner. That's where the good left off and the mediocre began. Sunday is breakfast only - I had steak and eggs. Steak was terrible - completely tasteless Eggs were just OK potatoes not too bad. Service was mediocre as well. Food was simply not up to par - sure, it wasn't terribly expensive - it just wasn't very good. Not recommended.

The Handy is a staple in Newport..been here for years. If you want the whole 'Diner' experience, you'll like it here. Worth a stop in for a cheap breakfast in the heart of downtown.

Thames Street in Newport has so many restaurants, but what my dining partner and I were really in the need for was breakfast food...and we didn't see too many choices. Luckily, we drove by Gary's and found street parking right away. As my DP would say, "You can't really go wrong with a diner; they definitely know how to do breakfast right." Indeed-- Gary's did not disappoint! We were seated right away and put in orders for coffee, omelettes, and sides. We both ordered off of the Specials menu. My DP had the spinach/mushroom/bacon/cheese omelette, and I ordered the Italian sausage/mozzarella/onion omelette-- both were delicious. The omelettes were cooked perfectly, and, to my delight, were served with the most deliciously homemade potatoes on the side. I think I ate all my potatoes in 5 minutes...in addition to half of my dining partner's. :) We were also served toast of our choice-- rye for him and wheat for me. I found it odd that they don't put butter on the toast for you, but I was okay with that; sometimes, I think breakfast joints put too MUCH butter on the toast. In addition to our omelettes, we also split a corn muffin that was grilled for us and served with butter...mmmmmm. Our whole meal was only $20, and everything tasted delectable. The diner's atmosphere was comfortable and classic-- like a scene out of the diner in Grease. Tiled floors, frames on the walls, and servers that seemed to have worked there since the beginning. I loved seeing the sketch of the restaurant's four original employees...and I tried to figure out which of our servers that day were depicted in the sketch. The crew definitely appeared to have their act together. The next time I am in Newport and need a satifying breakfast, I would really like to come back to Gary's. I highly recommend this place...just be warned about its CASH ONLY policy.

Gary Handy Lunch makes are great grilled ham and cheese. If you want to meet local Newport, visit Gary Handy Lunch. The owners are super friendly. We just moved to Newport and we were welcomed with open arms. We bellied up to the counter and enjoyed the eclectic group of customers. Blue and white coming together to enjoy good food and homestyle service.

My friends and I happened upon Gary's on a very hungover Monday morning after the Folk Festival. I loved the 50s diner-like atmosphere. Perfect, simple, inexpensive breakfast. No frills, but none were necessary when the food is just "good." I wouldn't recommend coming here with a large group, unless you are okay with being split up. The place isn't that big and tables fit no more than four. The bathroom is a bit awkward, as it is kind of still in the dining room - you walk toward the back and up a few steps. I prefer more privacy (especially when hungover and I just need time and peace and quiet), but fortunately our hotel was a few blocks down so I found some there:)

I really wished you could give half stars because this place is not special enough to warrant 4 stars but not average enough to get 3 stars. First and foremost, don't go here expecting special, avant garde food. It's basic diner fare but done well. You go here for the ambiance. Like Sean M. said, its got that retro look. Even more than that, it has that faded, worn, nice pair of blue jeans feel and look. Lets put it this way. In the booth I sat in, the seat cushion had a big hole and I didn't mind. No fine china, food is served on paper plates. What earns Gary's the most stars is the staff. Extremely friendly and helpful. Lastly, the price is right but a BIG WARNING--it's CASH ONLY. Go for the experience, enjoy the comfort food and say "Hi" to the staff for me.

Back in the day twas just the "Handy Lunch", I don't know Gary but he's doing something right. It does have that retro, "Happy Days" vibe going now. I like to sit at the counter. * Great breakfast/lunch choice on lower Thames. * Imma big fan of the hash and the home fries. * Get your paper next door. * Locals do eat here but they don't discriminate. * Easy on the wallet. * Parking is tough and there is a wait (line) on the weekends.

Went in to Gary's on a Sunday morning and ordered a bacon and swiss omelet. Waitress brought the food to the table with the plate with the toast sitting on top of the omelet. Ok I've seen worse. I started eating the omelet and I notice there is no cheese. No problem, people make mistakes. Then I notice instead of bacon strips they used Bacos those crumbled pieces of bacon(?) they sell in a jar to sprinkle on salad. NO mistaken it. It was not crumbled bacon, not chopped bacon but Bacos. Sorry but that's disgusting. The place may be cheep but you get what you pay for. Wonder what's in the pancakes?

We visit this spot on lower Thames in Newport every time we visit and it is a smaller diner on thmain strip nestled in with all these boutique style stores. It has been there quite a while and is I think family run. The menu is all classic style breakfast and lunch dishes, sandwiches and eggs etc. The service is fast and very nice and the food is just what it is supposed to be, greasy and very good!! Great lunch spot anytime of the year and awesome burgers!! I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting to grab a quick bite. The prices are so cheap, you could feed a whole family or group for under twenty bucks! Kudos to the owners of this place for hanging on to it in a town full of ever changing restaurants!

Encouraged by all the Yelp reviews, I took my wife to Gary's as part of a surprise weekend retreat, and we were really disappointed. We waited over half an hour for our order (breakfast sandwich and omelette) to be served. During that time, our unfriendly waitress served several other tables around us, and didn't check on us at all, update us on our food, or apologize for the lengthy delay. We were moments from walking out when our food finally came, and it was OK, but nothing great (very few home fries on the plate). And they only take cash, which isn't posted on the door or menu and wasn't mentioned by the waitress (they do have a cash machine on site). Wish I could recommend it, but I left without tipping, extremely rare for me.

I was introduced to Gary's Handy lunch about 18 years ago, when I was then traveling with my girlfirend at the time (now my wife) to visit her gandparents that lived one block down from Gary's. This place has not changed very much over the time, other then they are no longer open for dinner on Friday and Saturday. The decor is the same very 50's retro happy days thing going on here. When I visited for the 1st time 18 years ago the food was killer and the prices were afforable as well. It was straight forward diner food as good as it got. Guess what Folks, things do not change here at Gary's. You will see Gary behind the counter at the grill cooking, All his Children and Grandchildren helping here! The food is still as good as it was 18 years ago. The entire family puts in a hard day's work here and it shows. Ok so you are sitting at the counter and you notice the food the has dropped on the floor by the grill. Some of the above reviews knock this palce for that. I have been at Garys 30 minutes prior to him closing. Every family member (staff) comes out of the wood work and puts plenty of elbow grease into cleaning the joint from top to bottom and making it look emaculate. The staff treats you here as if you were family, weather it is your 1st time in or your 100th time in. The prices here are very, and I stress very affordable here for a family of 3 or,4 on a budget. Good size portions at prices that don't sting like other places on the island. Check this gem out. It is not in a fancy building, it might seem a little dingy, who knowns you might make some great freinds that will treat you like family!

ICYMI in the 50 other reviews- Cash only! ATM inside. Came here with 4 friends on Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend. Greeted by friendly staff and seated quickly even though it was probably the busiest weekend to go! Food is what you'd expect at a typical diner- quick, cheap, greasy and large portions. Great for big groups and hangovers :o)
