My husband and I came here last week while in town, and enjoyed the two for $35 dinner and wine special. I was very happy with Pan Fried Tilapia, accompanied with a lovely rice pilaf. My husband enjoyed his steak frites, and the fries were very nice. We shared a chocolate dessert that was very good. The white wine that came with the meal was very good, especially with the chocolate sauce and whipped cream that it came with, and I would be happy to have it again. We did have our 8 month old baby with us (we confirmed while making reservations that they would be able to accommodate for this). She slept for most of our meal, and I suspect that some of the patrons weren't even aware that she was in the room. We've been here before (after Thanksgiving a few years back), and they do a beautiful job decorating for the holidays. Overall a very nice meal, and we hope to be back again!

Great prime rib with the perfect side of mashed potatoes! Beautiful decor around the holiday! Our waitress was great and attentive! I'll be back!!

Ate there last night, fairly good food, service good, $34 special two-fer with bottle of wine Tuesday thru Thursdays. Quite noisy with one table of rowdy people. Interesting place, but just ok. Not sure I will go back.

Fabulous! It was our first visit for a very special occasion! Everything about it was stellar; the food, the ambience and the staff. Can't believe we've lived here so long and this is our first time. It certainly won't be our last - our new favorite place.

What an amazing meal! My husband had the scallops wrapped in bacon and the prime rib and he loved it. I had the root beer braised short rib an it was excellent. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. Lots of history in the building.

The restaurant's building is a beautiful ol' casino that is well maintained on the inside. We chose to sit on a large, partially enclosed porch, where there is a bar and some tables. It was just a very nice place to sit on a cool breezy evening. People watchers especially will enjoy this area. The tables are nicely spaced and there is unobtrusive live music playing in the background. The service was very attentive and really perfect in terms of pace. We were not in a hurry and our server was content to let us take our time. It was nice to find a place that was not at all concerned about table turn over. There were four of us. We shared two appetizers, the stuffed clams and the bacon wrapped scallops. Both were delicious. The clams were absolutely fantastic. For entrees we selected the rib-eye, the lobster pie, the short ribs and the seafood Alfredo. All of them were so good that we passed them around for tasting. I think the number one choice was the lobster pie and I regret passing it up. But I would pick any one of the four choices again. The wine list is excellent and the prices are reasonable. All in all, we enjoyed a really nice, relaxing dinner. Everything - food, service and ambiance - was just fine. Go here. You won't be disappointed.

Elegant, good food, nice staff, reasonable prices, quiet. I had ordered a savignon blanc wine, when the wine arrived it was a different one , I asked to see the list again since generally I know what I do order. They had made a mistake because they did not have the one I ordered. They reduced the one they had ( which it was also very good $3.00 more expensive). when the check came in, the did not reduced the wine in the check, eventually they did It was a great dinner nevertheless Only advise, go early since they like to close at their schedule time

Upon entering Canfield House, the first thing you'll notice are the colorful remnants of its former life as a Gilded Age casino--complete with a large and colorful game wheel at the entrance to the dining room. The space is a throwback to yesteryear. With its heavy drapery and ornate wallpaper, the interior of the restaurant, much like its nearby neighbor The Chanler, will transport you back to a time when folks actually lived in those big old mansions around the corner on Bellevue Avenue. Four of us made reservations toward the end of the night here, following a cocktail party down the street at Forty 1 North. By the time we arrived, the place was less than half full, but the wait staff was still lively, friendly and responsive. I ordered the Seafood Alfredo: packed full of native lobster, scallops and shrimp and tossed in a parmesan cream sauce with caramelized onion and sundried tomatoes over linguine. It was decadent, delicious and hearty on a cold and snowy winter night. After dinner, our server sidled up to the table with one of those absolutely evil dessert trays - you know the ones - featuring teasers of all their lovely sweet selections. I swear, restaurants must shellac the most beautiful pieces when they emerge from the oven so as to make them look like sugar-soaked perfection all day and night. It was not a sound judgment call, but I gave in to temptation and ordered some rich, chocolately, and wholly unnecessary concoction. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the clientele does skew older; but I don't have a problem with that. Everyone deserves to have a nice meal out once in a while, and to be completely honest, I'd rather a well mannered elderly couple sitting at the next table than a bunch of idiots in their twenties, blowing half their week's allowance on shots. It's no longer a gambling establishment, and the place itself is not a gamble, either. I personally prefer being as close to the waterfront as possible when I'm in Newport, but when the weather is less than lovely, this is a great choice.

Our favorite restaurant in Newport!! My husband always gets the grilled Romaine and shrimp salad and the Bouillabaisse and I love their fish dishes and risotto. Fantastic!

A former acquaintance of mine who has a wife with some very particular dietary requirements once told me to steer clear of this place. Since I had almost painful experiences dealing with him and her in regards to setting up event menus, I decided that we should try this place, mainly out of spite (and also because the other reviews seemed to be generally favorable). The perfect opportunity for us to try it out was the last Newport Restaurant Week (sometime last fall). The place does look very nice, in a big old Victorian with lots of wood trim, etc. But, once one looks closer, the shine seems to come off a bit from the expected fancy-schmancy experience. One, the place seems a bit worn (old carpeting, faded wallpaper, etc), which I guess could be expected from an old house. Second, the waitstaff was dressed in polo shirts and khakis, something I would expect at a more casual, family, maybe chain-type like Chili's restaurant. Perhaps they're not going for high-end dining, because when I think of elegant, high-end dining, I think of staff at least wearing dress/button-down shirts, perhaps even with a tie, not business casual attire. We noticed a lot of the older set here as well, so maybe they cater more to that crowd. As for the food, we went with the RW menu, so we weren't able to sample most of the main menu. And since we dined there a few months ago, I don't even recall what we had, which I guess says something. I do remember thinking the food was good-not-great, but not bad at all. Since it was RW, the prices were reasonable. From looking at the main menu, it looks like the prices are fair even when it's not RW. The service was fine, not over the top awesome, but not lacking in really any way. Overall, it was an okay experience. Would we go back? I don't think we'd go out of our way, but if we found ourselves in the neighborhood and needing a place for dinner, we would consider going back.

A true gem! Kuddos to the owners and staff. We were so disappointed with all the so called "best places to eat in New Port" until our hotel concierge suggested the Canfield House. It was the best meal we ate in New Port. The dining room was amazing, the food fresh and plentiful with warm and friendly service. They treat everyone like family. Best historical spot to eat in New Port without breaking the bank.

Unique old fashioned seafood steakhouse-type place former old casino by the guy that invented solitare no less! We had rib eye (generous cut) a scallop dish and a hazelnut mousse that was delicious. Attentive waitstaff. Feels like a place your parents would have dined at for a special occasion 50 years ago. If it had been a little warmer we would have had a cocktail on the porch and listed to the band.

What more do you want out of newport? Gilded age building, serving classic dishes. Loved it. Scallops were good, lobster good, salmon good, all our appetizers were great. Exactly what I wanted on a weekend in newport.

The food was amazing especially the mushroom risotto and root beer short ribs, I was able to treat my wife to an elegant anniversary next to the beautifully decorated tree, special thanks to maggie for making it a memorable and special evening

The food is fantastic. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The decor is timeless. Beautiful historic house remade into a restaurant. I have only great things to say about this place! My family and I were in Newport the first weekend in December and ate here all three nights we were in town! The food is top notch, and well priced. The chef certainly knows what he's doing. A few highlights--the scallops over lentils, the poached pear spinach salad, and the lobster mac and cheese were just a few of our favorites! The crowd here seemed mostly older, with only a few younger people. I have no idea why the young and hip of Newport are not dining here. They are certainly missing out on one of the best restaurants in the Northeast.

This restaurant is not to be missed. The food was excellent (My wife and I were lucky enough to be there when they were having a 2 for $35 meal including bottle of wine), our waitress was amazing (Chatty but informative), the eating area is a converted amazing casino that is simply beatifull. Be sure to make this place a stop if you are in the Newport area.

Recommended by our neighbors who have a place nearby in Newport. Set in an old house/ casino owned by a notable gambler, it still has much of the original decor. We were told to try the dinner special offered - two meals and a bottle of wine for $35. Worked perfectly for us as we had just arrived in the evening, were starving and didn't want to sort through dinner options all evening. We had a nice California Merlot with Steak Frites and Pasta Bolognaise, and split a chocolate hazelnut mousse. The atmosphere is very lively and friendly, filled with locals who probably dine there every week, and the staff was wonderful.

I usually go to the downstairs bar. Really cool speakeasy- prohibition feel.. however youd be surprised how good the food is. Highly recommend the fish tacos. Great date place or place to talk ...on weeknight. Not as crowded and loud as rest of town.

We originally were drawn to the Canfield House for their $35 special - dinner for two with a bottle of wine, not a bad deal? However, once there, we ordered cocktails, (gin and tonic and a Cosmopolitan - both very good), an appetizer, and dessert. So, our final bill was much higher than $35, but that was our choice. The food was delicious, and the setting is beautiful - perfect for a special dinner out.

Excellent Newport restaurant. Quaint atmosphere as it is located in the former casino of the famous Newport 400. On our arrival we were graciously greeted by Maggie, a very friendly host. As we were early, we had a drink at the bar before moving to the dining room. It made me feel like the Great Gatsby dining here. For dinner we had lobster bisque and shrimp. Both were very good. Next for our entrees my wife had salmon and I had scallops. The dinners were beautifully presented with accompanying vegetables. The decor was about the same as it was in the 1920's. We look forward to another visit when Newport is an encore.

I had roasted pear salad - incredible! The scallops appetizer was one of the best! The prime rib was out of this world!! My brother had the scallop and lobster pie another home run.

Canfield House was a nice stop for us on our East Coast Trip after visiting the Newport Mansions. The dining room is a large Victorian Style dining room that has the same feel (albeit dated) as the dining rooms in the mansions (but not nearly as fancy). The service is very friendly and welcoming, which is especially important for me while I am playing tourist. They also were very accommodating to our 13 person group. Overall the food was pretty good, especially for the price. They have a killer deal that is 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for $35 per couple! (note: the bottle is a cheap bottle approx worth $4-$10, but was surprisingly good!). I ordered a grilled prime rib and my girlfriend ordered mushroom ravioli and we were both happy with our dishes. We also ordered the French onion soup as an appetizer and it was delicious. We love French Onion Soup and order it whenever we can, and we particularly enjoyed this one because it wasn't too salty like most usually are. Overall, if you are in the area, I would recommend eating here. You definitely can't beat the price!

The lobster macaroni and cheese takes your tastebuds to a decadent heavenly place! Omg I I just can't rave enough! The bacon wrapped scallops are perfect too.... The cheese crumbles are the magic touch! A true gem of a bed and breakfast and a Resteraunt! The staff are absolutely wonderful! As gordon lynch would say " absolutely a five star experience' ! And gordon Ramsey would have given kudos for the five star dining experience! You know it's good when you just can't stop eating it! Mmmmm!!!!

An excellent place for lunch in Newport. This is tucked away from the main part of town, so you won't be jockeying with tourists for a table. The restaurant so nicely keeps with the traditional feel for the area and really nicely set up. The staff was so welcoming and attentive without being overbearing. It really made the experience that much better. The food was outstanding! I absolutely recommend going for the specials if you can.

Elegant dining room, excellent service, very good food. Vegetarian has mushroom ravioli, root beer short ribs. Very tasty fru-fru mixed drink. Had to change our reservation a number of times, and they were very accommodating.

We went back for my Birthday and it turned out to be a big disappointment. The food was mediocre, the service was mediocre at best. My filet was overlooked and the quality was not aged prime. No one asks if we were happy with our food. The salmon was oily and had a thick awful dark underside that should have been cut off in the kitchen. No cracked pepper was offered. The worst error was that the desert that was prearranged with the waitress by my wife prior to being seated was forgotten so I never got the desert with a candle!! The waitress when asked about this omission when we were departing, she said " I forgot, do you want it in a bag to take home?" How inadequate, no apology. No offer to make us happy by reseating us and serving the desert. My wife was quite upset. So was I. Very disappointed. Not the restaurant it used to be.

Man, you can get a blazin' good deal here for 2, Tuesday through Thursday: dinner with wine for only $35! On a recent Thursday night the restaurant was pretty packed. Despite being crowded, we were waited on in a timely manner. I thought the food was a good value. The portions were fairly sizable. I'm not sure if the full price entrees are particularly worth it. The options are fairly generic. Definitely would recommend the Canfield House for inexpensive weeknight dining.

Service is great--they always remember our names. I drink tons of water and I never have to ask for more, which is unusual. And the food is good and great value. We will be back soon.

After touring the Newport mansions, this place was perfect, because it has a large formal wood paneled dining room. The warm bread they serve tastes like it was just baked and just came out of the oven. I had the luscious lobster/scallop pie. If you go Tues-Thurs, there's a great deal: dinner for 2 from a set menu, which didn't include the lobster/scallop pie, and a bottle of wine for $35! I went at Christmas time, and the huge tree is really festive.

  • Peter B.

Service was exceptional as was the food & the manager certainly was paying attention to the service being provided without being intrusive. The Seafood Alfredo was one of the best seafood dishes I have ever had. Best of all is that you can have a conversation in a normal tone of voice without competing with a loud sound system. This place is definitely worth a second visit!

We arrived at the Canfield House at 6:00 pm on a week night in late May and was promptly seated. The room was old style, plenty roomy, and the noise level was low. We ordered off the $35 for two dinners and a bottle of wine menu. The bread was crisp and good. We both ordered salads for $4 extra. No dressing choice was offered, they came with Russian. I ordered the grilled chicken, which was excellent. The other meal was a prime rib special, it looked like it was briefly grilled, very tasty. We both also ordered desserts, a little pricey at $9 each, but again very good. So our $35 meal cost $80 with tax and tip. There was only one waitress for the entire room, at least 8 tables, yet it was not a problem. She did a great job and never kept us waiting.

This is one of my favorite places to eat dinner. I've been here 2 times and both times were outstanding! On Tues., Wed. and Thurs. they offer a special dinner for 2 which includes 2 entrees and a bottle of white or red wine for $35. What a deal! It is a select menu but everything that we've tried on it has been fabulous! We usually get an appetizer as well and on our second visit also got a few different desserts (we were a party of 4). Everything we've tried here has been good. The service has always been good as well. The atmosphere is fabulous as the restaurant is located in one of the old mansion type buildings. There is a story about the house on the menu and worth a read. I have 2 young children and we have not taken them there. Not sure if we ever would because it seems to be a more quiet, romantic, intimate place for dinner. Highly recommend Canfield House!

John the bartender is a real asset. Mixes great drinks. Nice guy. Truly outstanding service, very attentive without being intrusive. The food is excellent. Fair prices given the high quality and ample portions. I'd come back. Elegant early 1900s casino. Credit gambling was invented here. No trouble finding nearby street parking. Head waiter Paul is excellent. Sharp guy, smart and funny, great service. The owner Maggie is there directing the operation and really wants her patrons to have a top notch dining experience. I live in CA so it will be a while before I return. If I were local I'd be a regular. Really.

Food was average. The menu sounded good until we actually got our food and it was as if culinary students had made it, we didn't like the food what so ever. It was overpriced for the food. The food was either overly rich or just flavorless. The dessert was stale and tasted as if it came out of a can. The coffee tasted burnt and the service was average as well.

We were in the area for the first time a few weeks ago and were staying at The Chanler at Cliff Walk and did NOT feel like going out to eat so we called here for take out. We ordered lobster bisque to share and 2 entrees. One was haddock with fresh veggies and yummy risotto the other was salmon with fresh veggies and rice. They also gave us bread...Prices were amazing for fresh seafood and so was the gentleman who took our order and helped us when we got there! If we ever get back to the area there is no where else we would want to eat dinner then here!

This place is easy to miss, its inset from the street a bit. Not only is the place very spacious its also interesting. The wood work is impressive, apparently it used to be a casino. The food is very good. The prices cant be beat. They often have specials. You get the experience of being in a much more expensive place. The staff is very nice and the place is run in a very professional way in general. You really cant go wrong here.

The interior was very interesting and well maintained. The service was very good. The food was delicious. From the lobster mac and cheese to the lobster & scallop pie to the root beer short ribs, we couldn't have asked for anything better. Would definitely recommend and will return should we get the opportunity to visit Newport again.

My wife and I, along with a group of about 8 friends, try to come to Newport pretty much every weekend. We routinely visit many of the area restaurants but have recently "re-discovered" the Canfield House as one of those places to go for that Special Dinner. The decor is fascinating and classy. This last weekend, five of us got together to celebrate a birthday. Heather took the reservations and Maggie met us when we arrived. We had great drinks at the bar where Maggie chatted with us. Denise took care of us at dinner and was very attentive and personable. The food was great - I always get the Grilled Plate (venison, sausage, lamb chops), my wife had the prime rib, others had the scallop/shrimp special - everyone satisfied. Denise even remembered a special desert I requested for our birthday friend. Everyone had fun! They have parking but the Canfield House is a pleasant and easy walk from downtown or the beach area.

While visiting Newport Rhode Island my husband and I wanted a relaxed and romantic dinner. We made a reservation for the Canfield House. Based on appearance we knew we choose the right place, and it was. From start to finish everything was excellent. The service was great and everyone was so attentive to our needs. The menu offered a nice selection of appetizers and entrees, at an affordable price. The wine list was not overpriced. For our meals we choose the french onion soup and for our dinner the Statler chicken. Everything was perfectly prepared and delicious. The dessert we chose was the lemon meringue it was served so attractive and was oh so good. With a bottle of wine and soup to dessert it was less than $100.00. We truly enjoyed the Canfield House Restaurant and would highly recommend it on you visit to Newport.

One of my all-time favorite restaurants. An elegant setting in a very historic house, with a dining room that will knock your eyes out! The food is excellent and is very reasonably priced. Try the prime rib (Friday and Saturdays only)! On weeknights, enjoy the Wine and Dine menu - dinner for two including a bottle of wine, for $35. There are three bars: one adjoining the dining room, one downstairs (called "Patrick's Pub), and an outdoor bar and dining area that is wonderful in the summer. If that's not enough, they have a private banquet facility upstairs that is perfect for small groups (up to about 40 people) for events like rehearsal dinners. To top things off, they also have four B&B rooms available. Not only can you dine there but you can spend the night, too! Don't miss this place!

Yum! My wife and I went here to celebrate finishing the Providence Marathon (we figured we could afford the calories!). Instantly became one of our favorite places in Newport (we've previously enjoyed Pat's Pub downstairs). She had the special: grilled prime rib with lobster mashed potatoes, while I enjoyed the lobster and scallop pie. Both were excellent and the service by waiter Paul was spot-on, friendly but not at all officious or intrusive. We'll be back!

I usually do not write reviews for restaurants. However, my experience here needs to be documented so that others do not read the other glowing reviews and become as disappointed as my fiancé and I were with this restaurant. We were in Newport for a wedding, so we came a day early to make a nice weekend out of the event. We wanted to eat at a nice restaurant that had good solid food at reasonable prices and the reviews online looked great. How wrong they were... When we arrived at seven, we were seated by the hostess in the back corner. As we looked around, we realized that we were the youngest people in the restaurant by a solid thirty years. It had heavy floral wallpaper, green carpet, and thick drapes - definitely not romantic as described. We sat unattended for at least ten minutes, without even capturing the waiter's attention. The despondent water girl was the only one who acknowledged our presence for quite some time. The harried waiter finally got to us, introduced himself and took our drink orders. He then disappeared again and did not return until after another waitress had brought our drinks and spilled them on the table while serving them. The waiter finally came over again and told us the daily specials. He was so rushed that he barely explained them in any detail. As we were sitting there wondering what to eat, we heard the waitress for the table next to us reciting the specials and it was only then that we realized our waiter had forgotten to include two of the specials of the day. We finally ordered and then sat there for a long while until a meager bread basket appeared. The first appetizer course was fine, however it lacked a lot of full flavor. The salad course was wilted, soggy, and missing several of the ingredients listed on the menu. When our dinners came, it was a mixed bag. My lobster and scallop pie was flavorful, however the sauce was watery and not as thick and creamy as I had anticipated. My fiancé, however, faired much worse. His baked haddock was stone cold and the mushroom risotto underneath was sticky, paste like, and practically inedible. He didn't even finish half of it, and that is saying something. Our finished plates sat in front of us for over fifteen minutes until another waitress noticed them and cleared the table. She then brought over the dessert tray, which was filled with sweating pastries that had been surviving out in the dining room for hours. We settled on the gelato, which was fine. At the end of the meal, our waiter returned to us and gave us the wrong bill. He didn't notice the error for some time, but eventually came back with the right check. Sad to say, but this was a total dud.

Canfield House is a wonderful place for a special occasion dinner. The building is exquisite; it was a casino for the elite Bellevue Ave crowd in its day but has been transformed into an elegant restaurant. If you are not in the mood for fine dining you can eat in the cellar at Pat's Pub which is a baseball themed. We have eaten at Canfield many times and it has always been great. Last night we celebrated our Valentines at Canfield. My pear and warm goat cheese salad was wonderful. My husband slurped down his onion soup in record time and said it was great. I chose the root beer braised short ribs which were served with roasted root vegetables. My husband had a filet with bernaise which was served with garlic mashed and green beans. Our plates were cleaned. We shared a mango sherbet for dessert. The Wiggin's have hosted many a wine dinner and as such their wine list is extensive. Bar drinks are generously sized and expertly blended by their mature bar staff. My pomegranate martini was the best I have had in a while and my husband said "their martinis are one of the better ones in Newport"

We went here for restaurant week last year. The food was okay, but did not worth the price. The restaurant week menu may be a deal, but I did not expect to have mixed vegetables you find in the frozen veggie aisle on my plate alongside my veal when I eat out. It killed the whole dining experience and left a bad impression. Even though I had the veal, it tasted like the kind of steak I used to get in cheap fast food restaurant: the seasoning and the sauce was too strong it ruined the veal. Decor was nice but a bit too dark.

Canfield House used to be a casino back in the day and it still retains some turn of the 20th century charm in all the dark wood and patterned walls and carpet. The bar is well stocked and the menu is classic. They often have dinner specials that involve a free bottle of wine - a great deal! My husband and I tried linguine with clam sauce. He got white sauce, I got red sauce. Both were quite delicious and HUGE portions! Our waitress was very attentive and interactive and when she found out it was our anniversary we got a free dessert! I would definitely go here again for a special night out!

Excellent in every way. Two bars, one outside, one with high ceilings and tables inside. A beautiful dining room, mansion style. Great food. Get the three tiered appetizer sampler with crab cake, stuffed oysters and ravioli on consecutive tiers. It's a quiet place and a terrific special night out. Very friendly service as well.

If this is your first visit to Newport (or your second or tenth), look no further than the Canfield House. The room is exquisite, a restored "gilded age" casino, it is the prettiest dining room in Newport, but if you're expecting stuffy, you will be disappointed. The food is terrific, the menu imaginative, and the service warm & friendly without being overbearing. They even have a cute little pub in the cellar. I love this place!
