Great service, Portuguese French Toast (doesn't sound right, but it was so good) and corned beef hash were best in town... Try the Portuguese French Toast, sweeter than your normal FT...

I love this place. This is my go to spot for breakfast if I'm in the area. The waitresses are very nice and I come there so often they actually remember by drink order. I usually get an omelette or something with poached eggs which are both delicious. I love the classic diner atmosphere where everyone is welcome and treated with kindness. I definitely recommend this diner.

I wanted to give 2.5 stars, because that's middle-ground. In a nutshell, I found that the experience here poor. Starting with the food, I played it safe with 3 eggs over easy, and extra homefries, a simple meal. Homefries are my favorite type of food to eat for breakfast, so I was excited to get some. Unfortunately, I might as well have boiled potatoes at my hotel and cut them up. The lack of seasoning, flavor, and that notorious crunch that elevates homefries were all missing. In my 28 years of life, I have never eaten ketchup at breakfast time, and on this day, I ruined a trend that I was proud of. The service was average, my water wasn't filled up once after they brought it. The food came in shifts, I had eaten before my friends received some of their food (maybe because we were at the bar, maybe because it was busy). However, we entered together, so they knew we were together. The only saving grace was being able to watch the cook on the griddle, who was sitting in front of us the whole time. I might suggest to him to change those plastic gloves every once in a while. All in all, it was a breakfast joint that was sufficient for a hangover, but failed to please.

Bishops gets an extra star for being a nostalgic icon in the area. This is a old school diner with a stereotypical fry cook with a dirty apron slinging hash that is tasty so long as you turn a blind eye to the sanitation issues. Sure as a restaurant, and particularly for germ-o-phobes, your instinct is to run away. But if you have a hankering for a bit of old style diner feel give it a try. The breakfast is traditional and tasty. They are cash only. A previous review was complaining about it. While I can empathize for those that do not carry cash routinely, those same may not be aware it costs small businesses a service fee when taking credit cards. To keep from passing it onto customers, there are still many businesses that prefer to operate on a cash only basis. It has nothing to do with what century we're operating in.

We visited this diner going on the yelp reviews. It was great! We loved the old style metal diner & decor. The food was great. Service was excellent. We had the Crow's nest & the Biscuits & gravy. Both were very good (very filling!). I will definitely visit this diner on any Newport trip in the future.

This place was absolutely wonderful. It has that nostalgic feel that anyone should expect walking into an old style diner. The prices weren't bad and there are plenty of food offerings for breakfast and lunch. I got the hashlet which is a huge omelet stuffed to the brim with cheese and hash and served with toast and potatoes. The food was really great and so filling. For $11 I definitely got my money's worth. I will definitely be going back.

Came here Saturday Morning for a very hung over breakfast. It has the casual diner feel. Metal floor, booths, great waitresses that call you "hun" I loved it. I got the 2 eggs over easy with toast and home fries. You can't go wrong. It was cooked perfectly. What I WISH I got, was what Bradley got. The pancakes. Holy delicious! So sweet and large. I'm actually craving them and drooling right now. Awkward. The icing on the cake was how great our waitress was! I wish I could remember her name. My sister in law is deathly allergic to anything dairy. She came with us thinking she wouldn't be able to eat anything. The waitress made sure to make her a huge bowl of oatmeal with berries. It looked delicious and Amanda is still alive! Thanks so much!

Let me start off by saying I love diners. If you are not a greasy breakfast person you should stop reading this review. This is truly an old-school diner, cash only, with stools at the bar and tiny booths, all packed in a glimmering silver diner. I had the box car which is two eggs, sausage a mountain of home fries toast and pancakes. The food was greasy and all in all delicious. Prices were good too. Friendly staff took my order quickly and had me my food fast. If you are a diner person I would swing by for breakfast next time you are in town. I plan to make it a regular stop on my travels

It's a typical diner with nice staff, a little greasy food, and price is set pretty low for this area. I went here solely because it was by the U.S. NAVY base (where I was staying temporarily for a month). I'm only giving three star because this place isn't all that clean and only takes cash! What century do we live in?!

This place is awesome! Exactly what diners are all about! In the traditional metal building with the griddle right behind the counter and plenty of booths all around. The breakfast is outstanding especially with Rhode Island's specialty the Johnny cakes. A little on the outskirts of Newport, but still close enough to not miss.

This place has been here for years (35+), used to live around here and this was my first time here. Had the biscuits & gravy. All I can say is that while having a different taste (still very tasty), portion wise, outstanding!! Two biscuits with two large sausage patties on top, smothered in white gravy with more cut up sausage mixed in. Again, simply put, outstanding.

An incredible place with great service. Their SOS and hash is one of the best I ever had, sure going to miss this place when I head back to San Diego. The SOS had creamy ground beef and their hash was very crisp....DELICIOUS! Friendly service with that East Coast diner swag "what can I get for you honey" I wish they had more diners where I live, this place is a must for every time I come out this way....AWESOME, hands down!

CLASSIC diner experience with a full menu with something for everyone. The waitstaff were all so friendly and attentive, the coffee was strong, and our breakfasts were delicious. Specials on the board all looked tasty. Johnnycakes are worth a try. Ordered an egg & cheese sandwich to go. On a windy, cold Saturday morning we sat right down and our food arrived soon after. We LOVED this place and you will, too!

I'm back home in Charlotte and wish I could walk down the street to Bishop's. This diner is THE definition of diner. First menu item that jumped off the page was the Rhode Island Johnnycakes. They were very thin and crispy and with a little syrup - sublime. We also ordered eggs Benedict and corned beef hash and lots of hash browns. Our server was very kind and attentive. If I ever get back to Newport, I know I will most certainly go back to Bishop's.

I wanted to love this diner. I mean, diners are awesome. I once live with a girl from New Jersey so I heard all about the joys of diners. I get diners. I don't get this place. Yes, it looks good - silver gleaming diner carriage on the outside (attached to a house to give it even more room) and tons of cheesy, campy stuff on the inside (Betty Boops, Popeyes, you name it.) But that's where the fun stops. Beyond the fun atmosphere it felt dirty in here. Really dirty. Like beyond fun diner dirty and into gross dirty. Ew. We were seated and were just looking for a quick meal - I ordered a bowl of soup, the person I was with ordered toast and eggs. It took over a half an hour to get them, and it wasn't even crowded! Seriously? How long does it take to make this? And then it wasn't even good, just ... eh. Average toast, average eggs, nothing spectacular about either. And my soup felt like it came heated up out of a can. Blarg. Staff was nice but, seriously, I couldn't have been more disappointed with this fun diner.

I have been traveling to Newport Naval base since the late 1990s. Bishop's has been a staple for me for breakfast on the weekends. First of all the food. The place had great fresh cooked to order diner fare. I especially love the chourico hash and eggs. The coffee is also always tasty. You just have to survive the gruff and often inattentive service.

Mediocre. I expected more. The place seemed gritty and dirty. Ordered a regular burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion. Waitress asked if I wanted potato chips with my burger, I declined the chips. When my burger arrived, it was warm (not hot at all), and simply just a small burger on a regular sized dinner plate, It was not appealing to the eye at all and in MHO, tasteless. Next time I visit Newport I will make sure to take an extra wide turn on that rotary and head somewhere else for lunch.

A good chunk of my enthusiasm for Bishop's is rooted in nostalgia. I spent nearly a year in Newport training (a long time ago) and have been back many times since for work related trips. I always make it a point to hit up Bishop's for plate after plate of good cheap eats. My mainstay for lunch is the fresh turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce. How can it not be good when they roast their turkey every day? For breakfast on our most recent stop over I had the Portuguese Chourico omelette. The sausage is made in house and is about as delicious as anything that will ever go into your mouth. Perfectly salty, spiced and just fatty enough. Tears almost running down my cheeks with joy. Bishops 4th Street Diner I think I love you...

Stopped in for breakfast. Great food, great prices. "B" IS A VERY ATTENTIVE SERVER. She reminded me of the beautiful Amanda Blake from Gunsmoke. Betty boop fans will enjoy the decor.

I cannot believe this place hasn't had a review yet! This wonderful diner offers a great menu of mainly breakfast and lunch stuff, with some dinner items also. Good is cooked right in front and all the staff are delightful to deal with. Weekends are the only time I've seen a wait. Tip: if you're coming with a group, immediately go around to the left side as you walk in, it offers a secluded area where you can chat and all sit together.

Exactly as you would expect for an old-school diner. Solid food, reasonable prices. I'll definitely go back.

The genuine article. No chain, no fast food. Just plain old-style, cooked to order and served hot breakfast in a setting from the 1950's....Friendly service and a local hangout so don't expect the crowd of tourists from the bus. Only let down was the coffee- could be hotter and could be a bit stronger.

Bishop's is a fairly standard old school diner. It's right outside of Gate 1 from Naval Station Newport which is how I ended up there for lunch. I ordered a burger special, which was good and a decent size for the price. My biggest complaint would be how limited the menu is, I'm used to Diners having everything you could want. Bishop's was more like a burger and hot dog place with some specials that also does breakfast. There's nothing wrong with that, but don't go expecting to be overwhelmed with options like you would be at a NY or NJ diner.

Left the barn at 5:15 yesterday morning and met my Polish riding buddy,MJZ at a local Dunkin'Donuts to discuss which direction we were going to ride for the day.We finally decided on the Newport area and I recalled that there was a diner down there somewhere. After a beautiful ride on some sweet back roads we rolled into the parking lot.I grabbed a couple of photos and we went in .Turns out that our waitress was also the owner- Hi Nancy! We had a nice chat with her about the diner and 'Yelp".Our food arrived quickly and the meals were hot and delicious.Reasonably priced(even for the area),good hot coffee and awesome service is what you'll find inside here.I'm glad we went here and appreciate that there are places like this to find and enjoy.

All these people who rated this place less than four stars are Grade A idiots. This is the best diner I've ever been to. It's one of the last old school diners left. Awesome food (especially breakfast), quick/great service, awesome atmosphere. Every time I visit Newport I make sure to stop at this diner for every breakfast while I'm in town. Love it, love it, love it! Try the biscuits and gravy!!!

I don't understand the other reviews. This place is terrible. By diner standards it took forever to come out. My omelette was served 5 minutes before my husband's pancakes. We wanted to share the Johnny Cakes, the came another 5 minutes after my husband had gotten his food. The waitress took them off the check, because it took so long. She explained that the gas oven was shutting down every few minutes. Not a very comforting thought. The place is also very dirty and is screaming for some bleach and steel wool. We aren't clean freaks, but this was one of the dirtiest places we've ever eaten in. Service was pleasant enough, but nothing special. all our food was slightly undercooked, overly greasy and just not very good.

Bishop's is a Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company original, one star for that alone. It's on the rotary just across the tracks form the Navy Base. * These guys are fast, fast, fast. We went last Sunday and we had our food two minutes after ordering, party of 5, the place was 75% full. Your mileage may vary, but in the last 2 years, I've been here a half dozen times and the grub was always served up in a hurry. * The food is good, not very good, not great. BUT if you are starving or hungover this food will help you get back on track. * I get the Portuguese Omelette, chorico, cheese, green pepper, and onion. Greasy goodness, that's how I roll. * Not that cheap for a Diner but it has ample parking, it's accessible and they're really nice. All that, and this is Newport where every place has a premium mark-up. * Nice mix of locals and tourist. * Cash Only

No one is twisting my arm to give 5 starts at Bishop's--this is the best of the breakfast scene in Newport, RI. As noted earlier, the building is authentic and so it the food and service inside. If you've never tried them anywhere, try an order of Johnny Cakes (cornmeal) good and often too greasy for the squeamish (but flavourful in the right ways). Other standards of biscuits and sausage gravy earn high marks--the real stuff, no pretenders here. They'll even overdo the whipped cream on your kids' hot chocolates.

it's ok. pretty good food. authentic look. only thing is, not the cleanest place, and it is really expensive for breakfast
