What a great place! As Newport locals, we are always looking for affordable, non-touristy places to eat in downtown Newport. Aloha Cafe is great! It's located in the Seaman's Church Institute which not only offers affordable rooms, but is a historical site. It was 2:45pm, which is past their posted business hours, but Luis was super nice and said he would serve us anyway. He also gave us a short history of the Seaman's Church Institute and encouraged us to visit the library and chapel on the second floor. (BTW, the chapel is beautiful!) As for Aloha Cafe itself, it comprised two rooms, and an outside patio area. The main dining area is open, full of light, and very cozy. You order the food from the second room which is basically in the hallway of the first floor. You order from the counter and the server brings you the food. We ordered the two specials of the day - the Shepard's Pie ($7) and a Chicken Avocado Pineapple Salsa wrap ($6). The Shepard's Pie was a small portion, but so delicious and decadent and served with half of a grilled tomato. The chicken wrap was also great and served with a greek pasta salad. Since we were sharing everything, Luis was nice enough to split the wrap and salad into two portions. Along with two sodas and an iced tea, our total bill came out to less than $20! We are definitely going back!

*This review is just on the service and not on the food/drink.* No aloha at all. We went in hoping to find some Hawaiian neighbors on our trip to Newport and we informed rather rudely that they were not serving any more. We asked if they were from HI at all and they simply said no.... No conversation or anything.... It was bad customer service to say the least and we would not have even thought of coming back. The owners need to look at the true meaning of aloha!!

A breath of fresh affordable, non-pretentious air in the heart of Newport's shi shi waterfront. Not only is Aloha Cafe ridiculously cheap, and the space especially cozy (outside garden, too!) but the proceeds from the cafe support the mission of the Seaman's Church Institute to be a "safe haven to men and women of the sea." This means that they also have super affordable housing and a commitment to support the community by purchasing food, etc from local shops and farmers. Go, local! The building itself is gorgeous. It's right on the water! Bowen's wharf! My "Pirate's Aaarrrmmlete" (that's "omelet" for you land lubbers) was packed with turkey sausage, feta, tomato, pesto. Totally solid. Not gourmet, but well done and wholesome. I'll need to go back to try their chowder, which has won several local awards. Can't say enough good things. Affordable, laid back, one-of-kind atmosphere at the price point, and supporting a great mission-driven business and the local community in Newport.

An extraordinarily beautiful, elegant place to eat, at McDonald's prices. No joking. Great people, and quality food. You're also dining in a very historic building (or on their 'secret' patio), and you're supporting a wonderful nonprofit. The only small suggestion I would make, Aloha, is to go back to your beautiful crusty french bread that you used to have -- that bread just raised the quality of the whole meal to the next level!

I had a simply wonderful experience at this cafe. The young man who waited on me and took my order was friendly and diligent. I had a BLT and the bacon was perfect. Waaaay affordable and waaaay delicious.

Mixed review. 3 of us had the pirates omelette and 1 had the pancakes and fruit. It was all good. First cup of coffee was good, the second cup, very bitter. We needed sugar for the coffee and the waitress grabbed 4 packs from the people eating next to us, we wanted a pack of jelly and again she grabbed it from the people eating next to us. Call me crazy but I don't think that I should feel like a fellow diner is there for me to scrounge basic condiments from. We ate outside, some may call it cozy, I'd would not. They do call themselves a best kept secret, I don't think it's a secret you can do better elsewhere.
