I ordered the Portuguese pizza over the phone and drove over. Found parking quickly but it was at night. The place was clean and bright: a great pizza joint feeling. They told me I had to wait a few more minutes which was fine; I knowingly arrived early. I grabbed a takeout menu and the fellow behind the counter asked if I wanted coffee! When I said yes he ran to the back to get the cream and sugar...I've never had that kind of hospitality at a pizza joint. The pizza was hot and delicious. Crust was perfect and the toppings generous. And the pizza was about $2 less than Nikolas', which is also good. For the money, I'll take the short drive to A1 rather than walk to Nikolas

Gross and overpriced. Pizza was gross and wings were even worse. Overcharged. Got the order wrong even though we explained in detail three or four times to the guy who answered the phone. He could not even get our phone number right. Do not get delivery from this place!

Ordered a Gyro over the phone, and I would pick up on my way home. Upon getting to my house, and opening up the sandwich, I noticed something tiny moving in the sauce. The movement was tiny maggots!!! I immediately called A1 and was told to come back to the restaurant. The guy working the counter was not shocked or surprised, nor did I receive any sort of apology. The cashier quickly looked at the sandwich with the maggots, tossed it in the trash, and provided me a refund. No explanation, no ownership of the issue, just a shrug of his shoulders. I should have called the Health Department!!!!

My three stars is based somewhat on nostalgia as I have been getting food from here my whole life. The grinders are really good. Same with gyros. The pizza has gone downhill in recent years. Crust is too greasy and they are skimpy with toppings. Delivery range is extremely limited. They would not deliver to my home three miles away. When I lived a bit closer, delivery service was always a frustrating disaster. 90 minutes not unusual. This for an apartment less than a mile away. I have gone to pick up phone orders and they have hat lost them or not made them at all. They also clearly don't care. Advice - place is best for eat-in grinders. Everything else, you're taking a chance.

Great little pizza joint off the beaten path for these parts! A1 is a fun little ma and pop pizza place that serves up a great slice of pizza for a decent price! They even offer a military discount, so if that's your game then you should give them a shot!

We got the minestrone soup and had to add two packets of salt and pepper for it to even taste like anything, the pizza was cold, tough, and greasy. The tossed salad was mostly a bed of brown iceberg lettuce with a few vegetables on top... I would definitely not recommend this place!

The signs say it is the #1 rated pizza in Newport and while there may be competition for #1, A-1 is a good pizza place. Their prices are a little higher than other area pizzas (i.e., Mama Leone), but you'll notice there crust has a bit of a crunch to it. This location is convenient for those that are within wwalking distance, but they also deliver in the local area. You won't find parking nor find yourself in amazement from the dining area, but you'll find good pizza here. By the way, if you're just getting a cheese pie, then grab a coupon from the menu as well!

Middle of the Road pizza. Nice local joint. Stick with the basics. I confess that the management kicked me out today. I am a dog (D O G not D A W G), so that is completely understandable. However, a BLLD (Bxxx Lxxxing Lap Dog) was allowed to stay. Hurumph.

From the menu it looks like this is a Greek pizzeria but it has more than just that meaning Chourico. It was late Sunday night (meaning 9pm in RI terms,) and Mom and I were at Newport Hospital and just needed something to eat. The only places open would be Italian or Chinese. This small storefront had it's neon signs on and looked welcoming from the hospital across the street. We ordered a Chourico on pita and an Italian grinder. I'm sorry usually I take a to-go menu but we weren't planning on coming here and I was a little out of it. The last time I came here was more than 20 years ago and it was just as small then as it is now BUT... It's cleaner, it's prettier and the food seems better (probably because of the improved atmosphere). I hope I come back here soon. They have Moussaka and Pastichio. They also have Baklava and Gyros. I love Greek pizza and haven't had one in quite a while. This is also an incentive to come back. The counter man was friendly and fast. The lettuce and vegetables were fresh and cut slim. I didn't try the chourico because, well, chourice doesn't like me so I only eat it if I'm going home pronto. The roll was crusty but not hard, soft but not melt-away. It looked to be baked in a local bakery. They served the chourico taco style on the pita. It was an interesting twist. The grinder and a bottle of Orangina hit the spot. For us this place was a break from a screwy day. If you look online you will find a menu at foursquare.com/v/a1-pizz… but I don't think it's current. We didn't pay $6.00 for a 12" grinder. More like $7.75 I think so call and ask before you assume they have what's on that menu. If I were you I'd get the food to go too since if it's crowded inside there's not much room to maneuver. This place is cheery. It's a got good pricing for Newport. The menu is pretty full too: dinners, grinders, pasta, pizza, calzones, burgers, salads, seafood (deep fried I believe,) children's meals and desserts.

Good pizza and onion rings (the rings were crispy, just how I like 'em!). This is just your standard pizza place; it was clean with a large menu. Drinks only come in bottles...there are no fountain drinks. We were one of two tables in there on a late, snowy afternoon, but it still took a long time (25+ minutes) for our pizza to come out. Although, when it did, it was piping hot and very delicious. The staff was very friendly.

Okay so if you know the Newport restaurant circuit then you've heard the "drugs" rumors, but I still decided to give it a shot because they deliver sandwiches. I ordered a steak and cheese, fries, and a version of an oriental chicken salad.wrap. The Oriental Chicken wrap was awful and I mean awful! The guy on the phone and the way it was descibed on the menu, I thought it would be a cold salad with chicken in the wrap. Wrong. It was shredded lettuce that was hot and covered in a ton of dressing, I HATE hot, drenched lettuce. So even though the chicken was palatable I had to throw it away. The fries were good and the steak and cheese was also good. I would order again for those two things, but I think I will check out something else in the area first.

I've had a fresh carry out gyro from this place a few months ago. I have to say it was incredibly delicious. However it ends there. Phoning in an order you get rushed on the phone. The owner is definitely not concerned with customer satisfaction. The order when I finally got it was old, stale, made no sooner than that morning. Because it is physically impossible for food to go stale that quickly. "Made to order" is used way too loosely. When I called back to get a refund I was told by the owner to fish my food out of the trash so I could get a refund when he sent his driver back out. I rest my case. Some people just shouldn't be in business if they're going to mistreat their customers so badly. I'm sure I'm not the first to complain and I won't be the last.

the people who work there are disgusting. saw the two guys at the counter hitting on a teenage girl who looked very uncomfortable. after she left, they continued to talk graphically about her, even with other customers around! they have no respect for their customers or women in general. i will never give them my money again.

I'm originally from Newport so every time I come back home to visit I always treat myself to an A-1 Special pizza. I love, love, love it and in all the years I've been going here I've tried little else. I do know the spinach pies are amazing and were stuffed with goodness. I get great service every time I go and I am missing them already. As a kid we live in the house directly across from it (behind the store)... good times... please never change guys... your one of my fondest childhood memories.

A-1 Pizza is nothing fancy, by any means. They do have great sandwiches though, especially the gyro. Get it with chili fries and you will not be disappointed. The pizza is pretty good as well, standard Greek pizza joint pizza.

Great place. Its not fancy but its the typical NE grinder, hoagie, pizza, gyro place. I gave it 5 stars not because its high end but because its exactly what I want when I go to a local grinder/pizza joint. Obviously not the healthiest but always good when you decide to go. Its a little small so I imagine on the weekends it might get full sometimes. The majority of people ethier do carryout or delivery (free).

Pretty good pizza and in my opinion, the best delivery you'll find in the downtown-ish area. It's a little greasy depending on what toppings you sign up for, but it is consistent in my experience which is a good thing. You can eat in for a slice, pick up in 10 minutes and take it home, or - buy their dough (for $2!) and go home and make your OWN pie. This is pretty awesome, if you ask me.

The pizza was okay. It had a bite to it, the calzone was also at par. I ordered some boneless wings and sweet potato fries. THEY BOTH STUNK I would NOT recomend the wings or fries...good lord, crappy. I wanted chicken wings, and got chicken with NO sauce at all and about 7 small piences. Stick to the pizza if your out of other choices to eat.

Food is alright in an ok section of town, but the real highlight is the chourico pizza. If I moved away I would miss this one item. This is the way chourico pizza is suppose to be.

Be Careful with your Credit/Debit card! Although their food is your standard greasy NYC style pizza place, the staff is inattentive and rude. After purchasing a pizza I began to play an arcade game next to the register. I handed them my ID as well as my credit card and continued to play. When I went to the counter for my IDs, they said I had picked them up, which , clearly, had not happened. I am now waiting on the police to view the footage because they would not let me see it after the incident. It was negligent and their attitude toward the situation was beyond unhelpful.

I have to say we have orderd twice from a-1and both times somthing was wrong. The first time I asked for lettuce on a sub and did not get it. This last time we tried the wings and they were soggy. The chourico pizza was awesome though I will order it again.

Below average. The toppings were good enough but the crust kind of ruined it. It was basically like a thin version of pizza hut crust: greasy and rubbery.

  • Mike B.

The most consistently good pizza on the island. It isn't anything like NY style...The crust is flakier and buttery. Sauce is perfect and cheese always has the perfect golden brownness. They're well known for their plain cheese pizza, but their meatballs are awesome as well they offer a Gyros pizza with Taziki sauce on the side (ask them to make sure they bring the sauce on delivery as they sometimes forget). It's not "Pepe's", but it's about he best pizza in the Newport area.

I found this place hit or miss. Some times it was good and some times it was bad. Last time I was there I watched the staff take a completely burnt pizza out of the oven, cut it up, then hand it to me with a smile. I walked out and haven't been back since.

This was our pizza spot.. easy enough for us to walk to, order and bring back home to eat. Tiny little spot on Broadway. Pretty enjoyable on a freezing cold winter Newport night.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
