Sunrise has become a weekly staple for my coworkers and I. They serve great Pho, fried rice dishes, and Vermicelli. I have yet to try one of the stir fry dishes or fried noodle dishes, but I can safely assume they will be just as great. The atmosphere music is pleasant as well. Acoustic covers of pop songs ranging from brand new to a few years old. Customer service has always been excellent.

Its pretty rare to find authentic Vietnamese in RI. I'm impressed with the food here. I've had the Pho and the Bun and they're very good.

Really simple review: bright, clean, small, friendly... Excellent food across a wide variety of southeast Asian cuisine. Eaten here many times, highly recommended.

I visit here whenever I'm on the island. For a long time, the papaya salad with tofu blew me away and I had it every time. It's gone, but there's the best tofu bahn mi I've ever had here now, so I'm happy. I'm also big fan of the tofu stir-fried with lemongrass and chili. It's great as a Vermicelli bowl. The summer rolls and sauce could use some work, but they've never been bad. Everyone is friendly, the food comes quick, and the ingredients are fresh. Great food.

This is the only Viet place near Newport so our options were limited, but the service was fantastic and the food was just as good. The rolls were amazing, the pho was very flavorful, and the pork chop on rice was my favorite. Thank goodness this place was here otherwise we would have had to travel to Providence for some pho. A must try if your coming to Newport or even if you're just passing through.

Sunrise is a GEM! My husband works down in Newport often, and pretty much every time we are in town we stop by to get some pho. This place is seriously one of my favorite establishments, no matter what time of the year. Pho is hot soup, but I'd eat it on a 90 degree day from Sunrise in a heartbeat. I will be honest, the first time I stopped in, I was slightly off-put by the fact that it is in a small strip mall and it doesn't look promising on the outside. Well, GO IN ANYWAY. You won't be disappointed! The service can be a little bit slow, so try not to go in if you're in a rush, but the food is totally worth the wait. We also love getting their summer rolls. They always taste fresh and delicious. We were just saying that we always get the same thing when we go, but we have a friend who has tried something new on each visit and has never been disappointed. I should probably branch out and try more of their menu selections, and I can guarantee that I will be back again to see what else they have to offer.

Best thing on this island! If you want some thing delicious and inexpensive with great service come here! It's completely worth it and healthy. I don't know anyone who doesn't love Vietnamese food and trust me this place is great!

Perfect, perfect place for a hot bowl of pho on a cold winter night! Such a random place, in a middle of a quiet strip mall, in the middle of Middletown. Very good food and excellent friendly service. The pho is better than any place in Boston, and comparable to many pho places in LA's Little Saigon. I will come back again.

Great food and drink you can't get anywhere else on the island. Service is consistently good. Overall a great value. I always get the vermicelli beef salad (sometimes I just get craving for it), but I've also tried fried noodles and fish cooked in a clay pot. My son always gets the pho noodles, either seafood or beef. Everything we've had is delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant. It's conveniently located on West Main Street and there is ample parking.

This Vietnamese girl approves! I've had the bun bo and the pho two different times. Both were exceptional and reminded me of mom's home cooking! I will definitely return.

Went here the other night to grab some Pho. It's a small Vietnamese cafe set set back in an unassuming mini strip mall in Middletown. It's located next to Big Dawg's. The decor is simple & there's probably ~15 four top tables. The waitress was quick to ask for my drink order. She came back & I decided on the medium pho with rib eye slices. There were a handful of other people there likely bc it was about 8:30 pm. The pho was timely in it's arrival. Steaming hot & softly fragrant of beef broth, cilantro & spring onion. The noodles had not yet softened fully so I picked at the Thai basil & plunked the leaves in the broth, stirred & ate a few bites of the rib eye. To me, the broth is the true test of really good Pho. This was lovely & clearly was authentically steeped from real beef bones in a big Kitchen pot. It was very good Pho. I really enjoyed it & I will definitely be back to try a few more of the other items! Enjoy!

Sunrise is a wonderful place. Having lived in Vietnam, I can attest to the fact that that the food is authentic southern style and always fresh. The decor is not much to look at, but you should really go for the pho and the garden rolls! Also, I have been bringing my kid here since he was old enough to eat solid food and he really enjoys the grilled pork and the fish tank. The owners often have their children in the restaraunt on the weekend, so you know it's a very family friendly place!

I was craving pho on a cold and snowy day and didn't know where to go. Seemed like Sunrise Restaurant had some nice reviews. It is a humble little place in a strip mall in Middletown, tucked behind the ubiquitous Dunkin Donuts. Plenty of parking. Plenty of tables available. The menu is larger than I expected with all sorts of things I'd like to try. I was seated in the fairly empty restaurant - one other single and 2 other couples were dining. I ordered the flank steak pho and the summer rolls. Great sauce on the summer rolls, and I was surprised by a piece of beef in each summer roll - a little treat? The pho had a side dish of bean sprouts, cilantro, and lime...I'd love some jalapeno, please! The bowl of pho was enormous - steak, noodles, scallions, and lots of broth. Sriracha and chili paste are condiments on each table. The food came out and it was pipin' hot. It could have used some more spice but that can always be added. The service was good, the food was just what I hoped for, and the best part was that the bill was under $20. I'll be back soon.

I am so happy that I finally found a Vietnamese restaurant near Newport. However, I am thinking I jumped the gun with excitement. The pho broth was decent to just not good. It had an old taste/smell to it. Not sure how to explain. On top of that the waitress did not say one word to me the whole time I was there. Despite me saying thank you and can you get me more of this... She just ignored my comments and walked away. After a while this got to be very rude.

Was very pleased with the pho (knowing we are not in a large Asian community) Give it a try. Good food. Good prices.

This used to be Saigon Cafe. The new place does not live up to the former restaurant. It is a BYOB but it does not advertise it. Being your own water, extra napkins & soy sauce. Service is terrible. Food is good though. But to keep asking for water & napkins is poor customer service. The lack of service is disappointing

After my local pho place closed for maintenance, I drove 35 minutes away to try the Pho here. It was great, piping hot and delicious. Fresh ingredients and authentic broth. I will continue to make the drive for their Pho!

Went there for lunch and the food was just ok. The hot and sour soup was very heavy and salty. The pork with snow peas was good, but not to the quality level of other Asian restaurants in RI. The snow peas were nice and fresh and crunchy, but not very flavorful. Some pieces of pork were a bit tough...

I've been meaning to get to Sunrise for several months, since a friend had sent me a link to their page and asked if I wanted to go. This is my second pho restaurant, so I'm no expert, but this place was a bit better than the one I tried in California. We started off with summer rolls (goi cuon, or nim chow to most Rhode Islanders). They were pretty tasty and had a nice mix of sprouts, rice noodle and basil with a slice of beef inside, which was a slightly different twist than I usually have in this dish. The sauce was the thicker peanut sauce like you get in most LA restaurants with goi cuon. I still prefer the clear rice vinegar based sauce that many RI restaurants serve with nim chow, but this was a bit thinner than the peanut sauces I've had and was a nice compliment to the rolls. I ordered the large pho with thin sliced steak. The broth was okay, but I did end up adding sriracha to spice it up. They brought a plate of sprouts and basil with a lime to add to the bowl. The sprouts were crisp, plump and fresh and the basil was also very fresh and plentiful. I would have liked a few jalapeno slices and more cilantro, which they had already added to my bowl - but I didn't ask, so no points off for something they probably would have given me. There were plenty of noodles and the meat was very good - much better than my other pho experience. We finished off splitting an order of lychee. They were served in a large glass with ice cubes and a spoon. I've never seen lychee served this way - but they were very refreshing after the hot soup. We arrived in what I would call the latter end of the lunch shift, so there was just a single waiter working. He was both friendly and attentive and happily answered all of our questions with a smile. I still want to try more pho restaurants as I do enjoy this dish and this sure is the time of year for soup in the northeast.

Ordered the pho with combination of beef cuts and the spring rolls. Everything was of great fresh quality. The staff is super friendly! I had my food within 5 minutes of ordering (maybe because I beat the lunch crowd) I will definitely come back.

I love this place....I will drive out of my way ...going east bay instead of going west bay...on top of the great food and service...they are beyond the pale as people. Nuff said. The best Asian food on the Island.

I've recently got hooked on visiting Sunrise Resteraunt, whenever I need to please my asian food cravings - after all there really isn't a whole lot of good asian restaurants in Newport/Middletown. I really like it at Sunrise, the girl who works the counter is extremely pleasant, and the resteraunt reminds me of some of the places I've wandered into while in New York City. So what's not to like about it? So far I've only had the chance to try the lunch special (k6), and the spring rolls, and both were very good -- Well the Spring rolls were OK, but I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to those, as I tend to make them myself. I'm hoping to go next week and try some of the Pho.

I told my buddy about how this place served pho, so he wanted to come here to try it. From my last review, the service is still a little slow. There was only one Vietnamese female working the tables. There was a male that comes out from the kitchen that could help her out. I ordered the B8 pho, the one with all of the beef pieces in it. We also ordered the spring roll. The spring roll was whatever. I had better. The peanut sauce was really thin and wasn't that flavorful. The pho was decent. The broth has good flavor. They had all of the pieces of beef that pho should have, so that was a plus. The noodles were not chewy, so good there too. The bean sprouts were horrible. Very soggy.

Great little place on the Main Street. Quiet and nicely appointed for a small take out/eat in restaurant. BYOB so be sure to grab a few beers or a bottle of wine before going. Loved the curried chicken dish--slightly spicy with a surprise sweetness from chunks of pineapple. Can't beat the price. Worth searching this one out.

I grew up on southeast asian/pac islander food and Ive had Vietnamese food in Southern California, Washington and now here. I ordered their pho. This isn't the best pho I've ever had, but its not bad. The broth is pretty good, the noodles, side of basil, bean sprouts and lime are fresh, but the meat isn't the best quality--too gristly. The decor and ambiance of the place is kinda meh. There was only one waitress and so it was difficult to get her attention for anything, however she was pleasant and polite when she came to the table. I'd likely go back if I have a hankering for a noodle soup again. Least until I find a better spot.

I came from San Diego and used to have Pho almost every week. I was feeling very homesick and was driving around and came across this place. Walking in you don't think much which is how it should be as the food speaks for itself! Aaaaaaaamazing! Great food, low prices and fast service! DEFINATELY worth trying!

In the midst of Dunkin Donuts, Dunkin Donuts, and... Ma's Donuts, here you can get an absolutely awesome avocado shake (which seriuously rivals even Del's as a summer treat) or a tofu cabbage salad with chopped mint and peanut dressing. That salad is hard to not finish in one sitting, although it is easily a serving for two. It's just that good. Food and drink like this are not found easily in suburbs. The atmosphere (I've only been in for take-out at lunch on weekdays) is quiet, almost hushed. But casual. One man at a table, Some take out. Perfectly nice service. I'm very happy this option is on the island. Sometimes you just can't take another breakfast sandwich.

Every once in awhile i will crave pho, and then eat it for 5 days straight. So ive eaten plenty of pho in my day. This joint is right up there with the best ive had. The broth is good, the meat is good, veggies are fresh. I got takeout....they skimped a bit on the meat, but ok, fine. Everything was packaged properly too, which has not always been the case at other places ive gone. The summer roll with the dipping sauce was delish too. Will definitely be back!

Yeah, I love this place, man! This used to be Saigon Cafe and the interior is almost identical to what it was when it was Saigon, but I dig the place much more now, and I go much more often. I mean, Saigon Cafe was fine and all, but I never really gave enough of a fuck about it to write a review. But yeah, the lunch specials are a decent deal, bubba! A cup of soul and a lunch special for like $6-something. I usually get the tofu with spicy vegetables or with lemongrass or whatever the hell. And the veggies always seem to be really fresh and cooked perfectly. And these motherfuckers actually cook tofu well, too, for whatever that's worth to you. But yeah, the service always seems to be good, too. I will say I miss the WTF-MIDI selections that Saigon Cafe used to play, shit like the Godfather theme and random-ass showtunes. However, I'm pretty sure that random upright piano is still in there for whatever the fuck reason. Do beware, they are closed on Wednesdays because why the fuck not, right!?! But I can't hold that against them, really. WOULD YOU?!?!?!

Vietnamese food in a strip mall? The spring rolls were fresh, Pho was quality, service good and everything tasty. Recommended for those who are curious or hungry and looking for someplace descent to eat.

Just visited this wonderful restaurant for the first time last night, but we will definitely return. We ordered two appetizers, ham rolls and shrimp cakes. The ham rolls were wrapped in a delicate yet firm rice paper (not rubbery at all), and bursting with Vietnamese "ham" (really a smoked pork preparation) and crispy fresh veggies and basil leaves. The shrimp cakes were a revelation, clinging to sugar cane "handles", and with a complex flavor that blends sweet and earthy components (thanks to a bit of mam tep in the mix, I'm guessing). I had the bun (rice noodles) with marinated shrimp, pork and egg rolls. This was a sensible portion that might have benefited from a few more shrimp, but the flavor and freshness of the ingredients was beyond reproach. My companion had the basil fried rice with chicken... she asked for the spiciness to be toned down, and I feel the dish suffered for this. I'll order it myself next time and have them go full throttle with the chilis! The people running the restaurant were very efficient and cheerful. We called our order in and took it home, so the only thing we missed out on was the "atmosphere." And frankly, that wasn't missing much. The interior is plain and mostly undecorated, but it's new and scrupulously clean. If you've never tried Vietnamese food, Sunrise is a great introduction (just make sure you're not ordering one of the mainstream Chinese dishes they also offer, such as Szechwan shrimp or sesame chicken... these seem to be confined on the menu to the category "Chef's Special Stir-Fry"). And if you're a fan already, you'll not be disappointed.

I am a Newporter who loves Vietnamese food. I have eaten Pho, particularly, from Saigon to NYC and onward. I love the stuff. So, when I found out Newport had this lil gem, I was happy to give it a go. I ordered the Pho (B1) and my companion ordered a beefless option (G8), we started with the spring rolls. All of our choices were terrific. The broth in the pho was not weak (as I have experienced in other vietnamese restaurant), and the meat was sliced/cooked to perfection. Noodles were also cooked perfectly and as slippery as they should have been. The broth was seasoned plentifully, and the only thing I needed to add was Saracha - the vietnamese hot sauce staple - which is an option in Pho (as it isn't meant to be spicy dish). In my companions bowl - the veggies were perfectly crisp, not over cooked. The seasoning was a mystery however, quite pleasing. And the tofu seemed fresh and as adequate as tofu can be floating in a bowl of deliciously seasoned chicken broth. The hot tea warmed us up on a cold winter's night and the only thing that stopped us from ordering the Vietnamese coffee was the late hour. Our waitress was very attentive and efficient. I recommend this place highly...the food is great and the service is hospitable. The decor is nothing radical but the dinning room is very neat and clean. For the price and all other factors...i won't complain and do plan on visiting again soon.

I've got to say... I was not impressed! Neither the service nor the food sparked any interest in me at all! I came here with a few friends and my husband for lunch. The place smelled rather bad to begin with, but I guess that is what you get when all sorts of Vietnamese food is being cooked. The service was very slow. There was one woman waiting on all the tables, and although it was not busy, it seemed like it was too much for her to handle by herself giving the fact that she was moving slower than a snail. One of our friends needed to be back at NAVSTA Newport by 10 of 1 and we didn't leave the restaurant until nearly 12:40. Mind you, we got there at 11:15! And we all ordered a lunch special. My food was bland and I ultimately got sick when I got home. I doubt I will be back. The only thing I found worth praising was there homemade avocado boba.

Had their takeout the other night. Quick service, fresh food. The pho was spicy but good, and the pork vermicelli was delicious. Can't go wrong with this place for lunch or a weeknight takeout meal.

The pho is amazing no surprise. Yet the hot and sour soup is the best i have ever had. My friend and I go about twice a month; more in the winter and order two big bowls of two different soups. We eat half and then trade. It is awesome tradition. The portions are so large one is always taking something home. Then this causes jealousy at work well every smells u heating the amazing soup or lo mien.

My hubby and I wanted a quick place for lunch and I had received a 10% off coupon in the mail for this place earlier in the week, so we decided on Vietnamese. We went at about 1:30 on a weekday and it was slow which was nice because we had our 7 month old nephew with us. The staff was really friendly and we didn't feel like we were disturbing anyone with the baby (which is always nice!). I had the beef brisket pho which was really good and my hubby had the claypot, which was even better. We had spring rolls to start and they had the typical peanut sauce for dipping. Yummy, but nothing special. All in all, I'd go back for another pho on a cold day. :)

It's not a good sign when you go into a restaurant during dinner hour on the weekends and find the place empty, but I'll have to guess that it's just because the locals don't know about this gem yet. Good. More noodles for me! I had bun. It was so simple and so delicious, with lettuce, pickled carrots, Thai basil, cucumber, bean sprouts, and some of the most perfectly cooked tofu I've had in a long time. And rice vermicelli, of course. My dining companion had beef pho, which he said was also really good. He said the broth was perfectly seasoned. A warning - he ordered a medium size. It was as big as your head. (They also offer a large. I'm guessing they bring out a gallon bucket for that!) He ate every last drop of it, too - it was that good. The decor is not fancy, but it's very simple and clean. The staff were really nice, and the service was excellent. I'll definitely be going there again. A lot.

About to try the Vermicelli Chicken bowl? Well to be fair, the food was full of fresh veggies, noodles, but there was more of these than chicken. Maybe my expectation was too high. But I don't think I'll go back.

This place opened up sometime last year in the previously occupied Saigon Cafe. It is waaaay better that the old place it replaced. I've only had the pho and lemongrass soup, but they are always good everytime I come in. The menu has tons more stuff on it, but I usually go when I need my noodle fix so I haven't tried any other items.
