EDIT: It is a HAPPY HOUR special ($3 rolls, $1.25 sushi a la carte), not a lunch special... and so the cheap prices don't happen until 3 (or 3:30 - 5). Came back here thinking I was getting the deal and alas, at noon, dropped $30 on a couple rolls and yellowtail sashimi. Cest la fuckin vie! Got a fried banana and spicy (but not at all spicy) tuna roll and it was delicious. Crunchy tobiko in there too. Had an Alaskan hand roll (salmon/avo/ and cucumber which promptly got ripped out because I loathe cucumbers). The yellowtail sashimi was good but the cut was a bit off: way way too thick, and had been previously frozen. I have to reserve the 5 stars for those places that make the melt in your mouth sashimi slices... Still, service is great, prices are average when not getting the HH steal.

This review will have pluses and minuses. I'll start with the minuses while I have your attention. Minuses: The restrooms were quite possibly the worst I've been in. Obviously I've been in some gross gas station banos, but with what my expectation is for an expensive restaurant, I was extremely disappointed. First, my wife took our 3 yo daughter to the ladies room. It was covered in vomit. I then took our daughter to the men's room and it looked it hadn't been touched since the night before. Standard would dictate you clean the restroom before dinner service and we were among the first customers of the evening. It hadn't been cleaned. The floor had paper towels all over it, the toilet stall had remains from other users all over the seat, and the toilet seat was broken and only had one screw in it. All in all, unacceptable. Pluses: The food was good, expensive, but good. Good portions. Bottom line: I would go again, but I would check the restroom before I sit down. If it was nasty I would tell the manager that's why I'm leaving.

What a find! Went here for Happy Hour (1130-5pm? Happy Hour turned into Happy Freaking WHOLE DAY) after class and I'm going to make it a weekly ritual. $3 rolls on so many different combinations. Tempura rolls are about $9-$11 at Sushi-go down in Newport, for $6 I could get 12 pieces of shrimp tempura rolls. Also, $5.50 margaritas that were strong and delicious for 430 in the afternoon. Plenty of different choices off their cocktail menu. I definitely want to go back and try their hibachi lunch specials which are also offered at amazing prices! The restaurant is sleek, modern and the staff was very friendly.

We had a good meal here. We had only been to one other hibachi restaurant before, so we don't know what to compare it to. But we went back the next day. The lunch hibachi is reasonably priced. It was very empty when we went, but this may have just been because of the off season. The cook we had was a lot of fun, he made the experience very memorable and enjoyable.

For a sushi place in Newport I would say this is the best and with that being said please note this is not San Fran or Japan... so the sushi is decent, but not the best in the world. We've been several times and always have had a good experience. Fresh fish and good service. A few times we went with our 18 month old who tends to make quite the mess and the servers were very understanding and wouldn't even let us pick up the floor (which we always do because it's not right no leave such a mess). We will always go back when sushi is wanted.

Mizu replaced Sakura Steakhouse here in Middletown and the difference is night and day. Mizu has great lunch specials if you're trying to save money and some excellent chef specialty rolls if you're looking to indulge in excellent sushi. I am allergic to sesame and every time I've come they've made sure that nothing I have has any sesame in it. They're attention to detail is great, the customer service is great and the sushi is easily the best on the island. They have a sushi area, hibachi area and a full service bar. This is a great place for families to enjoy lunch or dinner, or even just yourself when you get that sushi craving we all get.

I've been living in Newport for the past two years. This has become my favorite sushi spot. The happy hour deals are so great! (3:30-5:30 everyday) I believe it's $3 per roll. I went for lunch and got the lunch special. It comes with 2 rolls of your choice, soup, and salad for $8. You can add another roll for $11. Every time my family comes to visit me they look forward to eating at mizu. My favorite raw roll is the spicy scallop. It's always very tasty. For the specialty rolls I enjoy the B52 and the Thai spicy roll. This review would be 5 stars except for the service isn't very great.

My favorite sushi place in Newport. Food is fresh, great ambiance, and the waitress were very attentive. Price was also reasonable!

The staff was very challenging to deal and communicate with. The food although did come out fast, it was of poor quality. I would rather drive 15-20 minutes to get better such I than go somewhere simply because of it's location and the convenience of that.

5 stars for some of the fresh and innovative seafood rolls, but 2 -3 stars for the margaritas. Great drink prices, but not great drinks. I usually have cooked rolls, but I must say, I might be a convert to the "Happy Roll" and the "Lover's Roll".......amazing. The Happy Roll had Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, etc. - topped with delicious and generous amounts of black caviar. The Lover's Roll had the most gorgeous iridescent red caviar I have ever seen. (See photo) If you are a big fan of Sushi, I can't imagine that you would be disappointed. The fried shell crab was not great, so I suggest that you stick with the rolls. Prices are very fair. Look for coupons in the local papers and happy hour specials.

My wife walked in on a take-out order and after 40 minutes left with a small bag of sushi for 80 bucks. When she got home she brought out 3 small trays that Mizu calls efficient packaging for five premium rolls. All told the rolls were each about 4 inches long and very slender. Okay so order more rolls you might think, fair, but 18.95 for what is less than 2 dollars in cost is outrageous even for the Island. The problem I had was I thought they had left out a roll, thats how SMALL the PORTION was, and I guess they put 2 very similar looking rolls into one box. I drove back to Mizu to fix the problem, and this is where the one star comes from. The staff was belligerent BELLIGERENT in telling me the order was right and they were positive the order was right. I was very polite dealing with them and in no way deserved the level of animosity I received from the staff that night, which I will further describe as aggressive (very close talking, 8 inches from my face, aggressive body language, waiving and pointing, and an over the top tone of voice). AGGRESSIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I don't need this from anybody. I will not return until I am sure they have fixed the chasmic gap that exists between this place and the customer service I have found at say the Taco Bell on West Main, which is not a compliment to that Taco Bell. Also increase your portion size to at least the median value for the industry, instead of the bottom one percent (BOTTOM 1%) these guys currently provide.

Took my wife there for Valentine's Day and ended up walking out due to the slow service. It took them 15-20 minutes before they even took our drink orders and by the 75 minute point we gave up on getting our food. We left cash on the table for our drinks and walked out. We MAY try it again, but it's unlikely.

One of the best sushi places! My friend and I usually go here for what we call sport sushi. (It's where we eat so much sushi that we have to call it a sport to not feel bad about ourselves.) we always start with seaweed salad and gyoza. Which is the best gyoza I've ever had! Then we order about 8-10 maki rolls. We get a Boston roll, Philadelphia roll, spicy tuna, rainbow roll, haru roll(!), crab cream crunchy, and a few other staple rolls. Great service, food is always out promptly. Food quality is amazing! No complaints here!

I had hair in my food when I went to Mizu and the manager refused to replace the meal or refund me. I used to be a regular customer but after this horrible experience on my BIRTHDAY I will never return.

Good local hibatchi, rarely a wait. Good sushi, Good sake!

  • Abby H.

I came in for lunch and was seated right away. I ordered the gyoza to start and got the sushi lunch combo. The gyoza were quite tasty and the miso soup had good flavor without being too salty. The only mediocre part was the dressing on the salad-somewhat bland. I ordered the spicy tuna roll and the shrimp tempura roll for the combo. The tuna was just right for me (not too spicy). The shrimp tempura was interesting as there was iceburg lettuce in the roll which I've never seen before. Service was good and the prices were great so I will definitely be returning!

I've been avoiding writing a review of this place because I was hoping that I'd forget about it. Honestly, I will never go here again. I know I've been spoiled in life by living in areas where high quality sushi is prevalent, and I knew I probably wouldn't find the same here... but I was hoping that I could at least order a spicy tuna roll in Middletown without any problems. It isn't exactly a California roll in terms of simple sushi but a tuna roll is hard to mess up. Unfortantely, the rolls we ordered were mixed with some other substance that gave it a thick chewy texture. It tasted like panko breadcrumbs but I'm not sure. It wasn't quality, it wasn't worth it, and my body refused to digest it any further than a few hours after we left. The memory of that night will keep me away indefinitely.

Chef seemed new....only 1 egg for a fried rice order for 6 people even though he had a basket of eggs with him.....veggies barely stir fried, pretty crisp and raw, way too much sweet sauce on EVERYTHING! More training required....

This is my go-to sushi place, definitely my favorite on the island! They have a lot of great specialty rolls and their hibachi is good- like everyone says RI isn't a sushi mecca, but it is perfect if you live here and want good sushi, and they have impeccable service

Okay bet if you're craving some Asian food. Better bet if you're craving an experience (the Hibachi artists are superb). But beware: this place has the potential to rub you the wrong way. Best for folks who know how to lay back and have a good time. 6:30 reservation for a party of 11. After lounging in the bar, finally seated at 7:23. Busy Saturday night, I get it, but I don't care when I have a concert at 9. Compensation: a round of shots for all. So off we went... Had a sushi roll and a spicy tuna hand roll. First was great, second was like eating something fresh from the freezer. Can't fool food quality in proportion, especially Asian. The entertainment, however, is worth the price of admission. Chef played the crowd well and liberally doled out sake to all of us. "More sake, more happy!" he exclaimed! Oh boy...time to go....and so we did. For those in Newport, the Diner's card is far out. Mizo honors the 2-for-1 dinners and according to the book qualifies everything (except lobster dishes). However, you better exclude sushi too. Waitress said nothing but hibachi dinners for the two-fer's. I don't mind if that's the case, but they have to put that in the reg's so you know upfront. Just sayin.

It's hard finding yummie sushi in/near Newport. There are not a lot of options. However, my boyfriend and I finally found a place we really enjoyed! Mizu was awesome. Wait staff was GREAT- very friendly and very fast service. The sushi was delicious, as were the dumplings! Overall, very good experience here.

Manage your expectations as this is not a "Little Tokyo" restaurant, but it is also one of the better Japanese restaurants in the vicinity of Newport. They give you salad and miso soup for most dishes ... and their food is consistent for a Japanese restaurant. The prices are comparable to other Japanese restaurants and again, they'll give both salad and miso soup (unlike most of the other area Japanese restaurants). If you're looking for a deal, then do what some of the other reviewers mentioned and go there during Happy Hour for the rolls. You can't go wrong with ordering a sushi boat too, but if you're trying to get your best value (dollar for sushi pieces), then you'll probably actually get more individual pieces by ordering individual rolls. They do have a bar (with a wide selection) and you'll find folks going there for that or alternatively going here for the hibachi grill. I'm personally not a fan of hibachi, but it is popular here. The ventilation is good too so if you're just sitting in the dining room for sushi, then your clothes won't end up smelling like cooked meat by eating here. Service-wise, its adequate and I haven't had any bad experiences in the past year and a half, but I'm not surprised by comments from some other reviewers. Ambiance and decor-wise, its fine. I'm not sure, but it seems like the restaurant may have different origins (i.e., bar and dance floor). The current setting is fine and clean. Overall, this restaurant is a better choice than any of the Newport Japanese restaurants with the ability to park and get some more "bang for the buck" in terms of food/drinks.

My family went for the hibachi, and we had a pretty good time. I really like the spices they use, so the meal is entertaining and tasty. I found everything cooked to perfection with the meat and fish tender. I haven't had the sushi here, so I can't speak to that. The hibachi performance is loud, so this isn't a place for an intimate dinner. There were a few families with kids (one had four kids), and either the kids are always well behaved or they were just thoroughly entertained by the hibachi performance. A great place for a large group or family.

Good sushi for a decent price. The Crazy Dragon Roll was especially good. There is a knock ya down drink called the Muttant Ninja Turtle (yes, it's spelled Muttant) that is yummy as hell.

My wife & I went here a couple nights ago & to be honest, I was kind of baffled by my meal. I ordered the spicy maki combo. This supposedly consisted of a spicy tuna roll, a spicy yellowtail roll & a spicy salmon roll. Maybe that's what they brought me but I'll never know for sure. In all 3 of the rolls the fish was minced and mixed with hot sauce & tempura batter. This made each roll look and taste exactly the same. You couldn't really even taste the fish because the tempura & hot sauce was so overpowering. I've never encountered maki rolls prepared this way & I hope I never do again. Looks like for sushi I'll stick with Sumo Sushi in Newport. I haven't tried the hibachi but I'm not much of a hibachi guy. If I ever do, I'll update this review.

Overall Dining Experience=AWFUL. Waited over 35 minutes at our table (with two very hungry & tired children) to be acknowledged, have our order taken, and be brought ANYTHING to eat or drink. By the time our waitress took our order she was rude, grumpy, and seemed annoyed to have to serve us. Completely unprofessional in our opinion. Unfortunate as we were so looking forward to trying this place. We now know better to keep taking our business to the establishment that is consistently polite and curteous to their customers....SHOGUN. We will NOT be returning and will be passing along the word to not dine there.

My husband and I went during happy hour on a Sunday and there were only about 10 customers in the restaurant. We each ordered about 5 different items off the happy hour menu, and they were all great! We also ordered edamame and gyoza and those were delicious too. The happy hour prices are awesome, the service was very attentive and the food came out fast. Also there is tons of parking! We will definitely eat here again.

Best sushi and best prices in the area. I have gone there about once a week for the last year. I am fairly picky when it comes to sushi, and have on more occasions than not been disappointed with sushi bars/restaurants. Mizu has a very nice staff and the sushi is excellent. When I first moved to RI, this building housed a different Japanese restaurant and was operated under a different name and different management. Loving Japanese food, I gave it a shot and had high hopes, but was severely disappointed with the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the restaurant. After about a year, I noticed that the name had changed on the exterior to Mizu and decided to give it another shot, and I am so glad I did. The entire restaurant had been remodeled and updated, Mizu is operated by new management and a new staff from the previous establishment. The food is excellent and the staff is friendly. Sadly, my favorite sushi chef there recently moved away (he was very friendly, always engaged in fun conversation, and had a great sense of humor), but the other chefs are very good and very friendly. I plan to go back as long as this place is around. Before I forget! They do Happy Hour just about every day between 3:30 and 5:30 and a number of sushi rolls are $3! You really can't beat that deal!

  • Dave Z.

Mizu is okay. Nothing special, just okay. With that said, I'm willing to concede that two years living in Japan spoiled me with regards to sushi - by American standards Mizu (which means water in Japanese, a strange name for a restaurant now that I think about it isn't too bad. My kids like going to Mizu for the hibachi ... which includes two fire displays which is the kids' main interest. The hibachi food is okay, the vegetable dinner is actually really good and includes a lot of food, but the prices at dinner are a bit much. Its worth going at lunch, maybe not at dinner. Best sushi in Newport? Maybe. Certainly good enough, especially at lunch.

There last night, Fri @about 7 pm. The place was busy as expected. I was a guest with a group of 5. I did not have my own transportation or I would have left even before having dinner. The bar lacked service personnel for the crowd. Mizu lost revenue on us. We ordered 5 alcoholic drinks which were never prepared. The bar was left vacant with no bartender for at least 15 minutes. There were only two hibachi chefs cooking and four tables full of customers. The waitress service was painfully slow, and we were on our second drink before the chef appeared. Basically, we had to wait until he finished with a previous group. The room was cold, I mean extremely cold. I had to keep my coat on. I can only assume management is cognizant of this since a space heater was provided for me at the request of my host. The chef's performance was as expected. They certainly are talented and work hard. The soup tasted like fish flavored water with one slice of mushroom. The salad was iceberg with one thin slice of tomato. I ordered filet mignon and scallops. The meat was cooked perfectly, but it appeared the sea scallops had been cut in half horizontally. I felt cheated. The grill was impeccably clean, but my bubble was burst when the chef began to clean it as we were eating dinner. He took a plastic bottle of what appeared to be water from below the grill, squirted it on the surface, created a burst of steam and then began scraping in front of us. Overall a disappointing experience for me. Pricey. I do not expect to go back.

Fast service and clean, this place is good but nothing overly special. The fish is fresh and the rolls are a decent size but it's not the melt in your mouth died and gone to heaven kind of experience. If you want a business dinner or just something casual this place is alright. Try Tokyo House or Sea Shai for something a little more unique.

This place is amazing! I came here with friends tonight and I was pleasantly surprised at how great the food was and how much fun it was! The atmosphere is fun and warm. There is japanese art everywhere and the place is set up real nice! There are two parts to the restaurant: The sushi and the Hibachi. We chose the Hibachi. It was so much fun to see our food cooked in front of us! The man who made our food was hilarious! He was so personal and friendly and we got a show with our meal. Prices were moderate and well worth what you get! Give it a try! Very much worth it!!!

Service was awful, rude from the moment we sat down to walkin out the door. Ordered hibachi steak medium-rare, it came well-done and tough as beef jerky. The "clear" soup was inedible. Dont go!

Prepare yourself for a somewhat long-winded post with a few points that don't directly reflect on the restaurant. (TL:DR at bottom) We came to Mizu because she was craving sushi and we felt like trying a new place. When we walked in the door there was a female customer standing in front of the hostess station. We, mistakenly, assumed that she was waiting to be helped and put our patient pants on to wait. Five to ten minutes later, with us standing right behind her the whole time, another group comes in, looking like deer in the headlights to find a line, and the woman says, "Oh, I am just waiting for a table. I've already been helped." .....People can be so strange (and I should have known better than to assume). After the gatekeeper moved, the hostess was quite prompt and we were seated quickly. The hibachi portion was busy, there were two larger groups waiting for a spot at the grill by this time, but the regular tables were not too bad. Service was appropriately timed and never felt lacking. Since sushi was the major motivator, we decided to go big or go home, and since we already waited for this meal, going home wasn't an option. Naturally we got an almost certainly not sea worthy boat full of rolled up, fishy goodness. The serving size was more than ample for the two of us and the quality was on par with what we expect from sushi in the Newport RI area. I agree with other reviewers who noted that the spicy tuna roll is not what I would call "classic". We finished off the meal with tempura green tea ice cream which capped the meal off with a healthy dose of yum! TL:DR Service was quick without being intrusive, sushi was at or above par with other restaurants in the area, spicy tuna roll has fried crunchies in it, tempura green tea ice cream was awesome, hibachi looks like a great time (maybe future date night.)

I really enjoy the food here. I've been a few times for the sushi "Happy Hour" and it was really good. Great deal too! I've also been for hibachi dinner and thought that was good as well. I would definitely stick to chicken and/or shrimp (I don't eat beef), but the scallops and lobster in the combo hibachi meal tasted like it had been frozen. I don't mind frozen seafood, but it shouldn't taste like it. Overall, very good food!

Being from California where there's a larger contingency of sushi eaters we found this place above most of the spots we go to. Great quality & fresh food.

  • Amanda C.

The food was ok. I wish I had just gone with plain sushi instead of the specialty rolls. The specialty rolls had too much stuff on them. You could barely taste the fish with all of the sauces and fruit and other things on it. I had ordered some hand rolls as well and they were the "spicy" rolls- tuna and yellowtail and again you couldnt taste the fish with all of the crunchy panko mixed in with the chopped fish. The service was great and the waitresses couldn't be sweeter or more attentive! I will go back but now I know what I would like to order

Aquidneck Island doesn't really have a "great" sushi place, which is very sad. I've experienced great sushi in big cities, but in RI, I'm just left disappointed. Not a good enough reason for me to leave though. That being said, Mizu is the best you're going to get. My friends and I have done the Hibachi thing here, and THAT was entertaining. I'm very shy, so the chef had a lot of fun with me, chucking vegetables at me, and shooting Saki in my mouth, as I was completely mortified, til my friend and I had a little more of our scorpion bowl. And then I just rolled with it and had fun. Some chefs are more entertaining than others, so it's kind of hit or miss. You can see kids really get a kick out of the theatrics, so I've been meaning to bring my little cousin. The sushi rolls are well executed, and the waitresses generally do a good job. I've had some "issues" when it comes to splitting the check with multiple credit cards. But as is the case anywhere you go in that situation, WE'RE the jerks who didn't think to bring cash. They have a special in the afternoon, from 3:30-5:30, where the rolls are half off I believe. So I would take advantage of that, if you're looking to save some money. I keep coming back, so they must be doing something right...

So far this the best sushi I have had. I stop in here frequently with coworkers and friends for lunch. The portions and prices are better than other similar venues nearby. The service us great most days and fair on some (overall very happy). I share some of the other reviewers thoughts about the hibachi in that it depends on the chef and the crowd. so if you like sushi with a lot of filling and not so much rice, you will be happy here.

The sushi was extremely fresh as was the appetizers made. I wish i could give this place 5 stars based only on the food. But the service was so slow and the table section was not busy at all. We didn't have a consistent waitress and had to ask for the check.

While the service was nice, I was alone for dinner and wasn't allowed to sit at a hibachi table because I was alone. The food quality was mediocre, portion size was below average, and flavor was sub par. Overall my dinner was incredibly disappointing for 30 dollars. My recommendation is that in a town like Newport go anywhere else before coming for Hibachi at Mizu. Better food at better prices are available in countless other restaurants.

We came on a Monday evening it's was pretty average. Maybe about 30 people. Service was a bit slow I think there was maybe 1 person per job (1 server 1 hostess 1 bartender etc.) they were really slow in service yet I felt a bit rushed. Our waitress even forgot my drink and served me chicken when I asked for steak with my bento box. The good was actually really good n the place is clean. Nice ambience and decor.
