A ton of seating They even serve alcohol Funny coffee mugs If you like your food greasy and your coffee bottomless, your options are pretty limited in Rhode Island. Blue Plate does an admirable job trying to bring that diner experience home, however, complete with the gleaming metal and toothpick holder by the register. With every trip to Blue Plate I am a little more jaded over the fact that it's one of the only places even resembling a diner in the whole state. Unfortunately it's not quite the greasy spoon I'd really enjoy, but alas. Lunch is the best time to hit up Blue Plate; they're quick, and rarely will you find yourself wondering where your waitress has gone. A personal favorite is the Reuben, although the club sandwich is also decent.

Had pancakes with caramelized bananas and brown sugar - fantastic. Side of sausage came with 3 links (expected 2). Coffee was also very good. Ambiance is that of a diner from the 20s, service was very good, though the place was nearly empty at the time.

I've been to the Blue Plate for a late breakfast, and late dinner on a couple of occassions. Breakfast was very good. I don't do anything fancy, just the usual breakfast fare. It was all very good, fast, and they have great coffee. For dinner, I've had the meatloaf twice, and will probably have it every time I go for dinner in the future. It is FANTASTIC!!! Everything is homemade. Everything is fresh. My wife likes their turkey clubs, and my mother in law likes their tuna melt. I don't order soda here because I think the soda is usually flat, but no problem. The one time I ordered soda, the waitress was readily available and switched for coffee. I will always order coffee her it is so good. One negative note, they should serve waffles all day/all night. Waffles are awesome any time of day! All the staff is friendly, and the service is always good. They have one waiter who does magic tricks, but I didn't have a deck of cards with me, which I usually do, so he promised to show me some tricks the next time.

Great coffee! Service was prompt and friendly. I ate here twice recently and both breakfasts I ate were very good. Breakfast burrito on one day and a portuguese omelet on the next....both I would order again.

This is a good place for breakfast and there are barely any waits. They are accomadating to larger parties although you will be separated. My family went there the morning after my wedding and we were scattered among the restaurant. It was great though! The atmosphere is that of a 50's diner. It's cute! They have the usual stuff for breakfast and they do serve alcohol! They are a little bit more pricey than other places I have gone to, but they do have pretty good sized portions. I can never finish my plate there! They have chocolate peanut butter french toast that is soooo good but sooo filling! This is something you will NEED to try or you will never live a fulfilled life! Their water tastes weird, so I usually go with juice. Their orange juice is strangely warm however, so you're safest with apple juice and cranberry juice. The staff is friendly and relatively fast. They have a lot of seating room and when the place is full on a Saturday or Sunday morning, the waiting time for your check can be lengthy. There is nothing super special about this place. It is convenient and if there is no place else to go, I will go here.

After a sprint along the Cliff Walk and back, and another hike to the car, the boy and I were ready for a meal. Not just dinner mind you; A MEAL. And that is exactly what we got when we entered this awesome throw back of a place. The decor is updated 1950's and there are amusing "proverbs" around the indented ceiling. Such as 'Thou shall tip thy waitress generously' and 'All shall be allowed to eat breakfast at any hour of the day'. I mentioned to the boy about half way through our appetizer "I can hear the music, but I can also hear what you are saying, I love that!" and I truly do; I don't go to a restaurant to listen to music, shocking I know. The booth that we were seated was huge (could have easily sat four more people and still have been comfy) and our waitress was a perky little thing that has a very promising career if she keeps up the good work. We ordered garbage fries (waffle cut fries with melted cheese, chili, and sour cream) with the sour cream and the chili on the side. When we were putting this order in I asked if it would be alright to have both on the side and this little chickadee, with out skipping a beat, said "this is a diner, you can have everything on the side if you want". Awesome. I ordered the crab cakes Eggs Benedict (which is exactly what it sounds like; take away the Canadian bacon and slap on a crab cake) a soda water with lime and Boston creme pie. The boy got the whole sha-bang; a garlic burger, a bowl of chicken noodle soup, and a mocha milkshake. The soup was 100% homemade; I could just tell by looking at it and the satisfied face of my handsome companion. That is a great thing that is becoming more and more rare, a restaurant that actually makes their side orders. Plus right there, I say anyway. I would have liked it if the crab cakes on my entree were crunchy, but hey, they were in between a pouched egg and a fresh tomato; neither of those are crunch keepers. As for our waitress herself, she did a great job. She was witty and answered all of our questions without hesitation, AND, (here is the part that I marveled at on the way home) she totally avoided the full mouth syndrome! I know you know what I am talking about. You get your food and start to eat when two to three bites in the waitress materializes out of thin air and asks you how everything is just milliseconds after you put another bite in your mouth forcing you to do the 'It's yummy, thanks" head nod, or the "MMM, Good" thumbs up. Gestures that do not naturally make an appearance in your vernacular. This girl, it never happened; not even once. That and we never had to wait for her, she just knew when she was needed and faded to the background when not. Like I said earlier, she has a promising career if she keeps it up. In the end I gave her a huge tip, my boy was rather surprised by how big, but hey she did good, and the food was great. I would definitely come back here, and I have already recommended it to friends.

We've only been here a few times for breakfast. It's your standard diner breakfast. They have omelettes and breakfast sandwiches. The standard basic eggs any style, a choice of meat, served with home fries and toast was very good. I added a side of pancakes to share. These are nothing to write home about, but like any other, adding syrup and butter makes them just as delicious as everywhere else. We haven't tried their lunch or dinner menu so I can't comment. Do get a seat before 9 am on the weekends, it fills up fast.

My experience started off strong, with the waitstaff all dressed the same, a full house (meaning people want to eat here), and a good selection on the menu I glanced at while waiting to be seated. Then we got a table, and I don't think anyone told our waiter that we had been seated. After he realized it and took our order, I got my coffee - in a metal cup! That was the highlight of the meal, the metal coffee cup. Pretty cool, except they didn't HAVE any clean silverware for me to stir it, I guess the kitchen didn't anticipate people coming to breakfast on a Sunday morning. Who knows? I had the standard breakfast fare and my girl had a toasted pastrami sandwich, my home fries were actually "somewhat warm, soppy potatoes" and her sandwich was nothing special. But the pancakes were really delicious and fluffy! Overall it was okay, but I know other places where we could have eaten more cheaply, so we won't be back. The atmosphere is pretty neat actually, if the food could back it up then they'd have a more devout following, I think.

I had my first class at CCRI Campus Newport this past Saturday and after class I stopped in at the Blue Plate Diner . I had heard of it many times but never had the time to stop in. Well I was very glad that I did . The service was very good and the food for a Diner was way above par...Great place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They tend to put their own twist on some great comfort food...Well worth exploring this place...Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.....

Had breakfast there last week and it was awesome food for a really good price. Would definitely go back.

I should probably give this place at least three stars since our waitress was super cute and the restaurant itself was clean, but the food was beyond terrible. I had those garbage fries and my husband got the crab cakes Benedict. I got the distinct impression there's someone out there who might find the palatable, but I though everything was gross. Almost like how can you go wrong with fries, cheese, sour cream, salsa? But they went so wrong.

Good turkey club and fries. Friendly service. Clean and bright atmosphere. '60s music on the sound system. What more could you ask for in a diner.

This place is FANTASTIC!! Upscale diner with great food and comfortable ambiance. Coconut shrimp and bruschetta was soooo yummy. Chicken philly sandwick is wonderful. Shakes and great desserts. Full bar. You HAVE to go here!!

Not really worth the 4$ you pay to go over the newport bridge twice to go here. Coffee is normal for a diner, service is decent. Homefries were really good. My wife had the country omelette and it was really good, my spinach omelette wasn't so good, seemed the spinach wasn't drained before being put in the eggs. Kids "silver dollar pancakes" was a VERY small portion for 3.49. She got 3 "silver dollar" pancakes. Not even enough for my very picky daughter to eat and they came with no other sides. My son had 2 scrambled eggs, toast, and homefries for the same 3.49!!! The kids juice was .99 for maybe 4oz plastic cup of juice. Would not recommend unless in newport already for something then it would be worth it.

Just went last week for breakfast, I was staying at the HoJo down the way. Breakfast was very good, nothing too imaginative on the menu by the way of breakfast- but the decor was interesting, food was fast, affordable and the pancakes were DELICIOUS!

Well, as promised and planned, we stopped here again while in the area this year. We came in with a large group of people and they were very accommodating. Our server wasn't the happiest person in the world, but he got the job done. Our food was good- portions were ridiculously large! Our coffee had grounds in it- had to ask for a new one. Probably won't come here again- I'd like to test out some other local diner, but this place is worth checking out.

Blue Plate Diner (BPD) has all that you'll want in a diner experience. It's most like what you'd visualize when you say "diner". Neither you nor your kids will be disappointed when you visit. BPD's menu has a range of entrees at reasonable prices. Of particular note are the sweet-potato fries with the fish and chips entree--in order of preference there. The service is very attentive for diner standards. There's also a full bar with big screens on the side, but I've not been there for nightlife. The key piece of experience is the ambiance created by the period decorations. Most of all the 10 commandments of diner eating painted above on the ceiling beams. This gives you a great excuse to get up and stroll around.

We eat here every time we're on the island, and sometimes we even make the trip from Providence just for the diner. My favorite combo is the portabella mushroom fries for appetizer and the chicken philly for a meal. The sauce on the philly makes it better than any philly I've ever had. Really, everything I've had there is good, and the place is just relaxed and easy to hang out in. Definitely worth trying.

The ambiance here took me back to the 1960's. A very much welcomed escape from the modern dinner. The meals are Very hearty and large portions. Ordered the French Toast with caramelized banana and The Greek Omelette. It was fantastic.

Always enjoyed this site. During my tenure as a student, we had group seminars here accompanied with gallons of coffee and great service. Today the service remains outstanding despite the unfortunate decision last night to go down to a single waitress; the poor gal was run ragged but never complained, had anything other than a smile, and was so apologetic for the slightly slower service. Well done and KUDOS to her. She more than deserved a big tip. This trip was the first time I tried the bar side. The TV remote made me chuckle as it was one of those for need of larger buttons and was the size of a dictionary. The bar offers a wide assortment of liquors and bottle beer along with a couple taps, It was quiet on the bar side but nice to watch the game while enjoying a snack. Free WiFi so I didn't even have to use my limited data time to write this review.... HoooYa

Really nice and clean place. Comfortable and not crowded. Not too loud. We had omelets. Hot, fluffy and good! Home fries were hot and flavorful. I'd definitely come back.

Blue Plate Diner is a solid breakfast and lunch joint. The diner is fitted with retro decor, big comfy booths, a dessert case filled with big beautiful treats, a huge menu, and even a full service bar that serves up spiked milkshakes! I have been for breakfast and lunch, which were both yummy. However, I was disappointed in their eggs benedict which lacked in flavor. Service has been great, I've had some wonderful waitresses here that treat you like family. I adore that many of the servers here match their personal styling to the retro vibe of the diner. The price is a bit high for fairly average diner fare. Hence the 3 star rating (I'd give 3.5 if I could). The location is super easy to visit from anywhere in Middletown/Newport and there is a good sized parking lot out front. It seems like it would be a fantastic place to bring the whole family... I know I will be taking my nephews for breakfast one morning of their visit here.

Ate here last night. Cute little diner. It had a good selection of items and the food was fairly tasty but service was slow; we only saw one waitress working the entire restaurant. Our sodas were flat. My wife's pasta dish wasn't prepared as indicated on the menu. The waitress had indicated they were out of Sambuca, which was one of the ingredients; when the dish came, it smelled of licorice so it seemed to have Sambuca but was missing the sun-dried tomatoes that were also in the description. At the end of the meal, the waitress didn't bother to ask if we wanted dessert. She simply gave us our check.

The service was excellent and this is a well managed place. I didn't have much, just a bowl of soup and a chocolate shake but both were disappointing.

I remember when this place opened. It didn't have the greatest rep for some reason, but it's pretty good. While on the Island the other night, my partner and I went to Blue Plate for a late dinner. I had the Greek Omelette and he had the Eggs Benedict. We found the portions to be very generous (leftovers!) and the service to be pretty good. Food seemed fresh and came out very quickly. I'm only providing a 4 star rating because my server did not allow me to substitute in fruit or toast for my home fries. Other places usually do this without issue. Regardless, the food was AWESOME. Other users have complained about price...really though, considering the amount of food we got for $8.99-$9.99 each, it was really good. Being an Aquidneck Island native, I feel comfortable sharing that many restaurants (particularly in Newport) will skim on quality because they know they'll get the business anyway. (And you will definitely pay more.) This is certainly not true of Blue Plate. If you want cheaper food, go to the Creamery--it's also good, but definitely not as high quality. Portions are also smaller. We will definitely be back! Other Yelpers have pointed this out, but I wanted to add that the retro atmosphere is very cool.

Nice small town dinner compared to major chains. We went on a Sunday and there was only one waitress working the tables. Also didn't have anything but whole milk in stock for coffee...please have more diet friendly options. Pancakes are very good.

This is a nice diner. The asthetics are spot on, from the furnature to the uniforms, this place has got that quintessential American diner style spot on. The food is reasonably priced, and the staff is very polite. Our server, Kimberly, was a sweetheart and quick to get us refills and the like. The food was average. (But there was a LOT on the menu that I couldn't try in my one visit passing through the area.) The omelet was perfect, the breakfast potatoes were ok but a little over spiced, the toast was good, the blueberry pancakes great, the hamburger was not bad but clearly preformed, and a chocolate milkshake was ok. I didn't eat this all myself, I'm crowd sourcing the food reviews from the friends who came with me. Overall, we enjoyed it. It wasn't the best diner I've ever been to, but it was still great comfort food. My table was in agreement that we would reccomend this diner. Note: Breakfast is sold all day, but the waffel iron turns off at 2 p.m.

The food is good, but no doubt pricey. The service was okay on both occasions we were here. However, they gave us the wrong food and unfortunately we didn't realize it until we were all the way home :(. They close at 9pm so don't expect a late night diner.

Stopped in this morning for breakfast while on a long weekend in Newport. The diner has a great retro feel, clean, and great service. I ordered the blue plate pancakes, a stack of three fluffy, delicious pancakes with out of this world caramelized bananas on top. My brother had the crow's nest, like eggs benedict with corned beef hash, which he said was awesome, and my mother ordered the potato omelette which was by far the best omelette she's ever tasted. Our server, Jessica, was excellent. All in all a great place to stop.

Came here for lunch. My review is for the food only. My only gripe about this place is that I ordered eggs benedict and my eggs were fully cooked not runny. I was disappointed because they had alot of good reviews for their breakfast menu. And my favorite breakfast food is eggs benedict. I will be back again, hopefully next time will be a better experience.

The best thing about the Blue Plate Diner is its retro decor, all diner-ish with chrome and comfy booths. The food, however, is utterly meh. You could do better just by cleaning out your refrigerator and finally getting rid of that limp box of salad greens. That's what I got, for considerably more than my refrigerator would have charged me: a big bowl of limp. I wouldn't have ordered salad at all, mind you, if the diner hadn't wanted to charge me $2 to slap my sandwich onto some lettuce instead of bread. They like to upcharge, these guys. Not the most generous place, that's for sure. Unapologetic about it, too. So I got three eggs, easy over, that I could have made at home. I got a limp salad that was scraped from the back of the oh-no-there's-been-a-snowstorm-and-we-couldn't-get-to-the-store bin. Worst of all, I got a lack of grace from people who are unaccommodating to diabetics and others who eat low-carb. I visited this place once when they first opened. This was my second time. It will be my last.

  • Vanessa E.

The food is okay, but the service is not consistent. The last time I was here, service was terrible. When I needed something I was treated as a nuisance rather than a customer. Granted, it was very busy that day. I have avoided eating here since then.

Had a gift certificate so we thought we would give this place another try. Went for supper mid week. There were plenty of empty tables but we couldn't get a table for some reason. We waited for about 15 minutes and decided we would rather go somewhere that would actually serve us food.

I remember when this first came in, about 5-10 years ago, and all the Islander's were a little confused. I am dissapointed to say that I have only been here twice! I think mentally, I just never think of going to Middletown to eat. I am going to make a mental note to make sure I try it again. Greg and I came here one night and got breakfast for dinner. Their menu is SO big, you can get anything you want at any time! Our food was really good. The atmosphere places you right back to driving up in a pink Cadillac. It has great charm!

  • Jim M.

Wish I could comment on the food. We went here last night to use a gift certificate and when we came in the door, a server told us, "A few minutes guys," even though there were plenty of empty tables set up with silverware (it was a Tuesday night). After 15 minutes we left. There's no excuse for not sitting a party down if there are available tables.

This ain't yo grandaddies diner.....upscale atmosphere and delicious food. Service was fast and polite. The waffles are fluffy and the California omelette was great. Do not drive by.....go get some good food. BTW the lunch and dinner menu is even better than the breakfast menu. Your my man BLUES!

I'm not sure why this place is getting decent reviews. We stopped by the Blue Plate Diner this past Monday (7/16), it was about 1PM and we had a long drive back to Baltimore ahead of us. I wanted to get some coffee and lunch while the fiancee finished her homework, rather than having to do it when we got home after driving for 7 hours. Blue Plate is a typical looking diner, only apt to the name everything is painted blue. The menu is typical diner fare, minus the Greek dishes that are often found at diners. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich (picture included), it was just greasy, fried, and nothing special. The fiancee's salad was alright, nothing special either. After finishing our food, I wanted to order coffee and hang out for a bit so the fiancee could do her work and so that I could caffeinate up for the ride ahead. Prior to ordering though, the waitress just brings the check over with a "Just let me know when you're ready." I tell her that I would like to order coffee and she just kind of gives me this look of "OKKKKK." I order, she brings the coffee and almost immediately after a check to go with it (Jeeze what if I wanted to order something else?). This time, she goes, "not to rush you or anything." I think she picked up that we were taken aback by her essentially trying to shove us out the door and she asks, "So do you guys hate nice weather or something?" I mean way to be an ambassador to your business. There was something else that I didn't really enjoy about the ambiance. They have these quotes on the ceiling that are supposed to be clever -- and perhaps I'm putting too much into this -- but one of them reads, "Thou shall not only order coffee." Call me nuts, but you should be grateful for ANY business that someone gives you. The only Starbucks in Newport is in the downtown where you have to pay $20 to park. If I was local, it wouldn't surprise me if I stopped in here to get some work done over coffee, but after reading I would have just taken my business elsewhere. I think the owner intended this to be some fun kind of decoration, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. I would not repeat.

Superb service from our waitress Ebony! We stopped in for a late lunch after spending the morning in Newport. From the moment we entered the diner, Ebony and The Blue Plate exceeded out expectations. Ebony gave us choices on seating and was super attentive throughout our meal. Everyone enjoyed their meals and many were delighted to have breakfast items available all day. I have been here many times before while visiting my daughter when she went to school in Portsmouth. Each meal has been enjoyable. The diner is very clean with retro decor. Because of the superb service from Ebony, I wanted to share our experience. Ebony even took a group photo for us outside the restaurant! Now that's Blue Plate special service!

This five star rating is for Alison Fortardo she was our server and was so accommodating she really made us feel like we were family! She also helped out with other customers that were not even in her section all the while still keeping up with all of her own tables food was good but she made the visit worth it! I won't even go there is she isn't available so definitely request her before you go in order to get the very best! Thanks again Alison

The owner, Ted K., reached out to me after my review to solicit feedback on how my experience could be improved. After a handful of productive messages, he shot me a note stating that significant improvements had been made. I'm happy to say that my experience more than met my expectations when I decided to take my family there today and would gladly recommend the place for anyone to go to. Here's the summary of my experience. We were seated promptly, with a hostess who was incredibly friendly and engaging. Our server, who was equally friendly and personable (not only initially, but throughout our experience), promptly took drink orders and gave us just the right time to decide on our lunches. The food this time was exactly what I was hoping for. I ordered the Southwest Burger (one of their gourmet burgers) and, unlike last time, was built well, with care and high quality ingredients. The burger patty was plump, moist, and flavorful with the accompanying toppings matching what I was expecting based on the description. My wife ordered the buffalo turkey sandwich and absolutely loved it. The turkey was moist and the use of buffalo sauce liberal (as it should be). In particular, she loved how the buffalo sauce had just the right amount of bite to match the flavor. The ciabatta roll it came on was "just right" in that the crust was slightly chewy without being too hard. Overall, it was a great experience that really reflected a small town diner. It's clear that the owner cares about the quality and reputation of his restaurant. The effort to improve the food and experience was greatly appreciated. As a result, I look forward to my next visit and will gladly recommend the location in the future.

It's not the same dinner I went to as a kid. But I can order scotch with breakfast. I had gotten a craving for the Asian style salmon a while back only to find out that they changed the menu around a lot to look more like a diner menu. It was a little crushing but not all bad. The pasta dishes are nothing special but the sandwiches are nice. Brunch is great here, Forget you even know where Ihop is because this place is much larger, cleaner, friendlier and they have a bar. The brunch/ breakfast menu has your classic morning foods like pancakes, omelets, and my personal favorite eggs benedict. The home fries I love the building. Outside looks like a classic diner, but the inside has the layout of a diner, but much larger and with a modern feeling. The blue color is not overwhelming and makes the inside look brighter. The prices are fair and the staff is friendly.

This place seems to be hit or miss with people I know who go here. This time, for us, a definite miss. Our waitress definitely seemed like she didn't want to be there. I ordered chocolate chip pancakes and homefries while my hubby ordered a hash omelettel. It took a while to get our food, but it was late morning on a Sunday where they were busy so I'll let that slide. My pancakes seemed a little stale on the outside, which seemed weird to me. Weren't a lot of chocolate chips inside. The home fries, however, were quite yummy. My hubby wasn't a fan of his omelette as there wasn't much filling and was quite bland. We are willing to give this place another chance, but it might be a while before we come back.

Had the Portuguese eggs bene and they were pretty good in terms of hangover diner food. Waitress was nice and service was good. Overall good experience and good food, reasonably priced.

Good spot for some quick breakfast, nothing crazy but good. I ordered a stack of pancakes which had a little too much butter and a side of crispy baco which was cooked great. The atmosphere was cute and the waitress was really nice and helpful! Check this spot out if you are looking for traditional good breakfast.

I really wanted to love this place, but it was weird from the moment we walked in. It's has the appearance and feel of a chain restaurant since everyone is in uniform. I love diners, but this place just didn't feel like one. It was 2pm and we went with a late breakfast. They have an extensive menu so we were able to get pretty much anything we could think of. I went with a simple two eggs (over-medium) with home fries and toast. My fiance ordered the same with scrambled eggs and we split an order of bacon and a short stack. My eggs were fine, but the potatoes were not that impressive. The order of bacon was really tiny, but then again who needs that much bacon. The rye toast was the best thing about my meal - oddly enough. The short stack was tasty and fluffy but the syrup was that crappy fake kind. I know maple syrup is expensive, but it can make or break a meal. Totally worth the splurge if I were a restaurant/diner. Unfortunately the scrambled eggs were really overcooked. How do you mess up scrambled eggs? There is just no excuse for a diner to have a shitty breakfast. If you don't do a mean breakfast anytime of day, you shouldn't call yourself a diner. I wish my yelp app was working so I could have avoided this place and gone up the street to Cindy's Country Cafe (which was outstanding)

A friendlier place can't be found. From the warm greeting when you arrive to the great service are reasons to say " I am coming back". Had the Rueben, the calamari and for a dinner visit had some great fish and chips from the comfort food collection. This place is on our list. Service, great food, mid priced for great value.

My dad got beef kabobs. The beef was WAY undercooked as were the veggies. The beef was also cheep and tough and all you could taste was the soot from the grill. When it came back it was more done but still not good. I got chocolate chip peanut butter French toast. It was fine. The calamari was good-that portion was a bit small. The others were gigantic. The waitress was very attentive but at no point filled my empty water glass (I drank my dads too). I will not be back.

I've been here a couple of times; the food is decent, the service is friendly, and their menu is a good size so there's a little something for everyone. I was having a hard time choosing between the California omelette and a Greek chicken wrap and decided to go with the wrap. The wrap had grilled chicken, feta, lettuce, tomatoes, and yogurt sauce. It was good but I'm not a fan of mesclan greens and that's what they used both in the wrap and also in the side Greek salad. I wouldn't get it again because of that. My dad had a pastrami sandwich and my mom had the french toast and they both liked their meals. I think the owner is the guy with the pony tail and he's always friendly so I'd recommend this place if your group can't decide between breakfast or lunch...you can get both!

This place is adorable. I thought it was so cute I took pictures. They have a very big space there & a varied menu to boot. Good stuff. I wish it were closer to Boston so i could go more often. The waitress was great & the food was pretty damn tasty. They have a whole (full) bar area w/ a tv & everything which you don't always find. This is what a real diner should be & they do it very well.

The ceiling is so gross. The food is meh. The price is high. The place overall needs some serious TLC

This is what diners are all about! The atmosphere, the food, the great service. Everyone was friendly, our waitress was very helpful, and she gave us some awesome food recommendations. I loved the Reuben! Milkshakes are out of this world, too! We'll be back the next time we visit Newport!

We used to come here once a week for breakfast, but after several times in a row with bad service, we decided that they didn't deserve our business any longer. Food is good, but a bit overpriced. What is terrible is the service. The last straw for us, being seated and waiting five minutes for a cup of coffee, when I could literally see our waitress unloading stuff to stock, seemingly disinterested in actually waiting on us. We were one of 2 other diners in the place so there was absolutely no excuse not to bring over a couple of cups of coffee first thing. When I waived down one of the other waitresses to see if she could procure said coffee she snarkily replied that we had only been waiting a couple of minutes. I thought that was exactly the wrong kind of attitude to take so we walked out never to return again. I'm pretty sure the owner would be horrified to learn that one of his regular customers had been treated that way.

I love Blue Plate! My only disappointment is that it is not closer! The food is unreal! No matter what I get, I always enjoy it. Blue Plate made me fall in love with breakfast after years of not enjoying it! There are tons of options for breakfast and lunch/dinner, so you will never get bored. Their french toast is out of this world! The patty melt is a greasy piece of heaven! If you are in the area, or hungover and looking for a quick pixk me up, run to Blue Plate!

Great diner food and atmosphere. Went looking for a breakfast place with my boyfriend and found a quiet, clean and rather large silver diner. Portions were perfect, and everything was cooked with just enough flavor. We both had the classic breakfast with a side of pancakes. Bacon was cooked perfect and the potatoes were simple but delish! Pancakes were nice and fluffy and the coffee was fantastic and hot! The only thing i could have done without was the butter-- a little too much for my liking, but its a diner. Thats kind of what they do... Great dining experience! Would go here again.

3.5 stars. You know you eat in a lot of diners when you're surprised to find a gleamingly clean one. Not only is Blue Plate clean, its diner motif is unusually tasteful: formica tabletops in a blue boomerang pattern, series of Warhol-esque paintings of coffee cups and ice cream sundaes, the "10 Commandments" of diner dining printed on exposed ceiling beams, black-and-white hexagon patterned tile floors. It's typical without being kitschy. Blue Plate's food is above-average as well. It came highly recommended by my local fam, especially the caramelized banana French toast. I'm not big on sweet breakfast, tho, so I ordered a breakfast burrito of scrambled eggs, peppers, sour cream and cheddar. It came with a serving of house-made salsa so deliciously craveable I had to ask for an extra serving. Husband had the eggs Florentine with gobs of fresh spinach and tomato, thick Hollandaise, and perfectly poached eggs. And the coffee was actually decent. Prices are much higher than you'd expect to pay at a typical diner, but Blue Plate bills itself as "The Finer Diner", an upscale eatery. I know. Think of it as your Special Occasion diner. The one you reserve for celebrating anniversaries and promotions. Don't pretend you don't already have one.

I got into Newport late last night. Too late to head downtown and hit up the restaurants there, so I decided to stop at the Blue Plate Diner near my hotel for a quick bite. I order the Blackened Chicken Wrap with fries which was pretty good. The waitress was attentive and friendly. She was doing a good job of cleaning up quickly after each table as well and the place was pretty spotless. A quality diner experience, I'd recommend it if that's what you're looking for.

I am so disappointed in the lunch we had today. It was our first time there and the server was so incredibly rude. It was absolutely unbelievable. I think she was having a bad day and was clearly stressed out. But...I overheard her a number of times talking trash about her customers. It was really uncomfortable. It took her forever to greet our table and bring drinks. I really wasn't upset about that though. It was just the general poor attitude she had. The food was okay. On the Blue Plate Diner's website it said that the only thing that comes out of the freezer is the ice cream. That is clearly a lie. I am pretty certain that the chicken fingers and French fries were frozen. Oh well! Probably won't be going back. On a positive note, it was super clean and the ambiance was really nice.

This is the best diner I have eaten in hands down. The meat loaf is out of this world and the best I can remember. So good that you will eat the plate if your not careful. The gravy is half the part as it has a polished and robust taste reminiescent of a barolo wine meets country gravy. Their Belgium Waffles, Mexican, and Greek Omelette's are the perfect trio for breakfast ( though not simultaneously). For dinner I would strongly recommend th meat loaf - as I said - the turkey dinner, and the brisket. As far as appertizers are concerned: give me the Mexican Calamri or give me death.

My wife and I and our long-time friends from NH stopped in here for lunch on 12/13. From the minute we entered, we felt welcome and appreciated. Our server was great, pleasant and attentive to our needs. Everything we ordered was top-notch, delicious and well presented. The specials we ordered were a good value. We were never rushed, even when she brought the check, advising us to take our time. While we ate, the owner came by to check on us. He also greeted us when we left the restaurant, wishing us well. Because of this experience, we decided to have breakfast here today. The reception was the same. I greeted our server from the day before as we entered and she remembered us. Our experience was the same for breakfast. Great service, by another server, as pleasant and professional as our first the day before. The food was amazingly good, two different omelets, pancakes and the breakfast two-egg special, for $4.99, was an amazing amount of food for the money. The "Hashlette" was great, with homemade hash and the Greek omelet was equally delicious. The ambiance is cool, with stainless steel cups and saucers for hot coffee and tea that match the diner's decor. When we return to Middletown, we'll return to the Blue Plate.

I was hoping for something with pumpkin - pancakes, muffins, anything; tis the season right? They don't start serving 'pumpkin stuff' til October. After getting over my disappointment, I settled for a Portugese omelette with chorizo, onions and peppers. Tasty buy greasy. Home fries were good but service was very much lacking. Saw my waitress texting three times instead of 1) taking my order, 2) refilling my drink and then 3) giving me the bill even though it was apparent I was ready to leave. I paid $13.58 for the above w a soda and I think that's pricey for diner food.

OMG this place was awesome! It looks like any northeast diner, silver on the outside, lots of window. But then you walk in and you realize that you are in a special diner with awesome service. The greeting they extend is super peppy! Very motif inspired if you will. Then you see the bar, it wraps around all the way it seems. It's huge! And the dining room, just great colors, pizazz! They put beams in the ceiling that have have commandments of what a diner should be. I wish I had written some of them down. Super fun! Then the menu - very diner like menu, I ordered up the blue plate pancakes. Two stack and a egg over easy on the side. It came with bananas on top that were cooked with sugar and it was perfect! So was the scoop of butter they provided, just enough! This place was great for Gus too! Got us a chair pretty quick, sat us in a convenient out of the way table, and offered him up a menu and crayons which he's not quiet savvy on just yet. Food was delicious, I felt like i couldn't savor them enough! The waitress was outstanding! Great service, prompt, friendly! I wish this place was closer to home, I would go every weekend!!

The decor is generic 50's, not the charming Americana type. I always feel rushed when I go in. I called in a takeout order and the waitress on the phone spoke as if she was annoyed at the call, so I put on my pleasant voice, maybe she was having a bad day. Nope didn't work, she was just rude. I picked up my order, waffles, bacon and a key lime shake, weird, i know. Let me back up, I went to blue plate cause IHOP was super packed, i didn't want to deal with the crowd. I figure you can't mess up waffles and bacon right. WRONG oh so wrong. The waffles are huge but taste like nothing. Have you ever had a waffles so good you didn't need syrup? I have, and that is what i am comparing it to. My bacon was overcooked and the key lime shake was ok, tasted "off" I can't quite put my finger on it. Limes are sour but the whole shake tasted sour. So my take on blue plate is, It's good enough if IHOP is closed. This was the last straw for me, i'm done with it.

Day two on my new psychiatric medication called: Pristiq. Isn't that a great name for a med? PRISTIQ. Sounds like a cross between precision and prestige... LOVE that little "Q" at the end. Designer Drugs, FDA USDA: Rat Tested: Kid Approved. Whatever. Sitting across from Derek in the nicely-sized faux leather black booth, he says to me, "I feel like I'm on DRUGS." (He, incidentally, has quit smoking cigs as of this morning - Go Derek! You can doooeeet! Cigarettes are for dUMMies.) I said, "ME TOO! I TOTALLY feel like... you know how you feel when you are coming off of cocaine? Like, spacey, shivery, shaky yet... deeply CALM?" Derek nodded definitively: NO. No, he couldn't relate. Most people can't relate to me, especially the weird way my body reacts to drugs - that's why I'm "bipolar" and alone :( Anyways, signs around this joint say curious things such as: Thou Shalt Sit Facing the Capitol Building. Thou Shalt Not sit Facing the Counter. And other such nonsense. Positioned towards the ceiling, just so depending on where you are siting, the "Thou Shalt"'s command your point of view. Innacurately, I might add. But that's besides the point! Who the heck cares about signs in a diner? On to the food: Twas Gooooood! Sup with the low ratings? Seriously. And I was NOT hungry whatsoever. Thanks to the meds. How was I supposed to know? I'm hungry now though. Even though I wasn't hungry, I still managed to eat most of the belgian waffle. I ordered it as is: minus the powdered sugar, minus the whipped cream, and 'extra crispy' (I hate an airy fluffy waffle that tears apart with no crunch). I mean, I guess you can't go wrong with a Belgian waffle but I thought it was quite good. Had a nice generous amount of butter . The fake maple syrup at the table wasn't tooooo fake-y either. It was like, restaurant fake but not Aunt Jemima butter flavored sugar free flavored fake. Not that bad. Coffee was pretty not great. Not so good. Sorry. They should know better with that. Derek had Blue Plate breakfast and it all looked good, the sausages gleamed a strange color but what do I know about sausage? I like to eat nothing in THAT shape... I know, I know: I'm a bad date. We both got waters with ice, those were fine. The service was delightfully cheerful. The guy at the front counter remarked on the great weather, "Where's winter eh? I don't mind!" It's shades of gray and blue inside - but, I'm not sure if that's just because my antidepressant hasn't kicked in. When I went to the bathroom (have been sooo sick lately - TMI) one of the waitresses had been crying, maybe I'm projecting, but I wanted to tell her I understood. I have been crying randomly ALOT. Too bad, maybe I could have given her a pill, or a hug. All in all, triply but not bad morning at the Blue Plate. Successful cigarette quitting morale/support/carb-load meal. I, incidentally, am one week clean today. No more silly alcohol centric reviews from THIS gal. No. Sir. Eee. I liked the staff here, particularly, and I can't quite pinpoint why. Perhaps it's just this delicate sense of vulnerability we share...life embodied in human form... Tip well. It'll come back to you - spontaneous karma.

This diner is not that bad if you love rude customer service. My hubby and I decided to stop here for a quick meal after a long trip from Boston and decided to eat here. As we entered the diner we were approached by a hostess with a very nasty attitude. Being that i had a craving for a chocolate cake, I kindly asked her if they offer chocolate cake on there desert menu, she rudely told me that the deserts we offer are on the desert display when you walk into the diner and what you see is what we have. As she explained herself rudely, i told her that we may have not payed it any attention when we walked in and what is wrong with her just telling us if they have chocolate cake on the menu. To make a long story short, my hubby and i just left and said we will take our money somewhere else and left. I will not be coming back!

I've eaten here a few times, though never for breakfast, which seems to be where the better reviews come from. Service wasn't bad, but it did not seem busy enough for the amount of time it took our server to swing back by our table. While I appreciate that she thought it would be nice to bring my toddler's food out first, we would normally not ask for that, but she did not ask us first. The result was our fighting with the child while trying to eat our own meals - slightly less enjoyable, but a minor issue. I have found each dish I have ordered to be just OK. The carbonara I had on our last trip had ham and bacon. I love pig, but even I found this to be over kill. The pieces of bacon were huge, as if no one had taken the care to chop it before putting it in the dish. Plus, it wasn't crisp little pieces of bacon, so it added little texture to the dish, and what it did add wasn't all that pleasant.

I'm a big fan of diners, and rarely miss an opportunity to visit one in my travels. Blue Plate is one of my favorites. I live in town, and this is easily one of my most frequently visited places to dine. The food is outstanding, the service exceptional and tremendously attentive, and the owner is one of the most visible, friendly human beings anywhere. This diner features a full bar, a good, diverse menu, and soups that are superb. Their chef makes a tomato bisque that rocks entire worlds. Whole worlds. Not kidding. If we get proof of life on other planets, it will be because they were caught eating the tomato bisque at Blue Plate. If there was but one thing that I could do to improve this restaurant - and I admit that this is nothing more than the fanish projection of my innermost desires - it would be to add an old school soda fountain. Beyond that..? It's a little slice of diner heaven. -J

Great diner fare from what I could tell. For about $10 I got an egg & cheese on a bagel with bacon + homefries + a salad + soda. Homefries were very slightly undercooked buy were really tasty, a little on the spicy side. Egg & cheese was awesome as to be expected, and the salad was a real surprise. Salad was fresh and the red wine vinaigrette was tasty. I wouldn't RUN back here but it's definitely great diner food.

As far as diner food goes this place is the best I've ever been in. This isn't the first time I've been here. My favorite sandwich is the Grown Up Grilled Cheese Sandwich for $8.99 made with Swiss, Buffalo Mozzarella, cheddar with tomato and pesto on your choice of bread. It really is over the top but a great sandwich and you can have it with sweet potato fries for an extra 99¢ like I did. Mom and I stopped here even though she had lunch already. She ordered the chocolate chip bread pudding. It was fluffy and light not dense and heavy with real whipped cream. Mom loved it and left about a quarter of it for me to try as the serving was so big she couldn't finish it. The sweet potato fries were not greasy, were light and crispy and the cheese in the sandwich oozed out the sides pulling the pesto with it. I love the interior and exterior of this diner. For a long time this place was a lounge called Crickets but succumbed to a succession of other eateries. Then in 2005 the owner turned the building into The Blue Plate Diner. The food has always been good here. It's regular diner food with some dishes that are modifications on diner fare. Take "Our Signature Meat Loaf Marsala," "dredge(d) in peppercorns, pan sear(ed) and finish(ed) with a sweet marsala and mushroom wine sauce gravy" or the "Kicked Up Mac 'N' Cheese" that is made with "three cheeses, ham, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and peas over penne, then baked with garlic bread." There is something for almost everyone here except for maybe vegans. There are offerings for vegetarians like a veggie burger, salads, a Grilled Portabella Mushroom Sandwich, and the "Bow Tie Pasta" made of "bow tie pasta tossed with spinach, red onion, tomato, sun-dried tomato and garlic in a light Sambuca cream sauce." I am sure if a vegan asked they may be surprised at what they could eat. I don't come here as much as I'd like. It's on Aquidneck Island so I usually only come when I've crossed the bridges. It's worth it to come here. If you have a person who on;y eats American foods (like some family members I have,) it's a place that you can have something decadent while they eat their hamburger or fish and chips. The only thing that I found not so great was the dirty apron of the waitress. Untied and hanging around her waist it really was unprofessional. It didn't ruin my experience. I made pretend I was in a regular diner and they were shorthanded. They could have been shorthanded too. I don't think I saw anyone else serving or cooking. And our waitress greeted us at the door. And after she rattled off an extensive list of desserts (there were none on their menu although there was a display counter with cakes and goodies in the front lobby area,) I was so impressed that I didn't pay attention to her attire. Usually this place is busy. It was about 1:30 on Tuesday afternoon so maybe that made a difference. Of course it isn't tourist season either so that makes a difference. The website says that this place takes reservations but I would never call a diner to make any. They have a function room with a photo of it on their website. The website says that Blue Plate caters too. Again I wouldn't call a diner to do that but this place is the exception. I am not fond of their parking area. It is small and the hairpin turn you need to make to get out the exit can be easily stymied by an ill parked car. They serve alcohol here and they have a full bar. Not one I have used but it looks very classy, believe it or not. Their breakfast is great and I know I will be back here again.

My girlfriends and I went after our nice adventure at a corn maze. The diner was well designed when you walk in there's a display counter of delicious desserts. We were seated immediately and looking through the menu I got more and more hungry. The options all look delicious, the breakfast, lunch, the milkshakes, desserts and adult drink menu . My inner fat kid wanted it all, I decided on the garlic Burger ( I love garlic!) W. Swiss cheese and it came w. Garlic butter and i ordered a side of sweet potatoes fries. I also ordered the Moscow mule which is vodka w. Ginger beer, yummy. The waiter was umm let's say sarcastic which was cool w. us girls cause we were pulling his leg most of the time, he was a good sport. My burger was yummy wished for more garlic, my sweet potatoes fries were just the way I like it, very little salt. I would definitely go again and try out there other dishes.

My friends and I came here the morning after a girls' night in Newport. This restaurant is a cute diner that advertises its animosities against fast food chains. I was amused by the commandments painted as part of the decor (i.e. "thou shall not eat fast food" and "thou shall not worship golden arches"). Our server was very efficient and our food came quickly for the most part. Orders around the table included the Crow's Nest (corned beef hash eggs benedict), American French toast, Belgian waffle, and an egg sandwich. Overall, everything was delicious, but it was apparent that this food is practically SOAKED in butter. We all left extremely stuffed and satisfied...a lovely brunch spot for those in the area.

The food came quickly after ordering and was surprisingly hot. We had an omelette and waffle. The potato omelette was quirky and good but it had a little more garlic than I personally care for. The restaurant was decorated as a traditional diner and was nice and clean. I would definitely be willing to go back if a friend wanted to eat there.

3.347 stars I had some so-so, to bad experiences here over the years but our last visit changed my view of this place. 1. Food is better now, a lot better. 2. Staff seems more professional. You have to love the look and the feel because it screams All-American Diner. The interior and exterior are just what you would expect. It's clean, and I mean the restrooms too. Not sure how they changed their game so drastically, but I'm not complaining. * Best Diner coffee I have had. * Safe bet for breakfast, simple lunch or dinner. * Booths are cozy and they have some over-sized booth seating. * Full Bar * Prices in line with Npt market

Service is fine. Food is fine. Coffee is bad. So, basically it's a normal greasy spoon, 50's style diner. I only go here because it's close to the Navy Base and they have sandwiches and shakes.
