I love this place! I moved back to RI a few yrs ago so having home cooked Mexican food is hard for me to get that is as good as my mother's, she's in FL. :( They definitely are worth checking out. I love the tamales! Wonderful people. Keep up the good work!

I had the green enchiladas! Ask for their hot sauces. I believe they're homemade. Sooooo good! Great prices too.

If you want great Mexican food with reasonable prices this is the place to go. The family which runs the restaurant is warm and accommodating. If you want easy parking and a festive attractive place, this should not be your destination. Im worried that this restaurant may close due to the limited parking availability. That would be a shame!!!

4 street style tacos for $6 and you can pick 4 different meats! Honestly though, just get 4 Al pastor....amazing! Nice quick meal, puts Cilantro and Chipotle to shame!!!

I lived in San Diego and LA for years - and coming back to not much Mexican food has been hard on me lol. But this is a great spot for authentic Mexican food that won't destroy your 401k of course. Nice folks - real Mexican folks who know how to make great food. I do recommend.

There is nothing bad to be said about this place. Sometimes, you just want good, delicious, legit Mexican food. Without bashing other places, Sombrero has the best tacos in Cranston. They are simple. Two warmed corn tortillas filled with meat of your choosing, diced onion and some cilantro. Perfect. I've sampled everything and loved it all. I recommend the marinated pork tacos. The pieces of pineapple chunks in the marinade are to die for. My husband and I have made weekly visits (or 4) since they have opened. The place itself is clean (it is brand new). It isn't very big and has more of a diner set up. The family that owns the place is great. They are attentive and welcoming. When we order, they bring our 1 year old daughter's taco first so she doesn't have to wait (or get impatient). The best part is that you never leave here feeling gross. All the food is so light and fresh! There is no grease in the entire place! For a light lunch or a quick dinner, Sombrero's is the place to go. On your first visit, order a variety of tacos to see what you like best! It's a fun and yummy way to check everything out. And for $1.50 a taco, affordable too! If you enjoy this place as much as we do, please spread the word. I would really love to see this place make it. I can't keep them open with just my business (though I can try!), so please please please tell your friends, neighbors, doctors, etc. Thanks :)

Great food! My favorite are the steak tacos and chorizo tacos. The place is clean and the food tastes fresh and is made to order. The prices are reasonable. Definitely will be going there repeatedly.

It's hard to find a good Mexican restaurant in RI, so we found this one and it is great!! Coming from Chicago where there are many Mexican restaurants this was truly a good find. The food was authentic and fresh. It is a family run place so they make sure everything is good. Mom and Pop man the kitchen and others take orders. Both dishes we got were really good, definitely will go back. I was surprised the salsa and chips were not free, but they are made fresh for you. We are eager to try the other dishes they have.

I drove by this restaurant many times and decided to finally give it a try, instead of going to the usual Taco Bell. I am very glad I did, food was great and service was excellent. Will definitely come again, chicken quesadilla was perfect and fries had the perfect crunch.

Solid restaurant. We had a good, large barbacoa burrito and a nice torta. Good quality ingredients and nice sauces to go with. Looking forward to trying their tacos. Owners are oaxaqueno, I believe, and there are some authentic twinges to their interpretations of Mexican-American cuisine. Very friendly.

Fresh, real, food. Authentic and delicious... we will return! Ordered beef nachos, chicken gordita, 4 tacos, flan, and a papaya shake.

Taquitos, tacos, tamales, breakfast, lunch, dinner. ES MUEY BUENO. It's clean, small with no frills. Nice folks seem to be running it well. Just really good simple food.

The ceviche was literally a combination of tomatoes, shrimp, onion (tons), cilantro and ketchup. Steak Burrito was good, though nothing amazing. Nachos were somewhat flavorless with carnitas. Too many other great restaurants around to return, unfortunately for the nice family that runs sombrero.

Authentic Mexican food in Rhode Island! Soooo delicious! Horchata was amazing, tacos are great, and the sombrero salad was fresh and delicious. Excellent service and food.

I wanted to love it here, I really did. The 5 star reviews, authentic Mexican is one of my true loves and this location was very good but it was not amazing. I had the Gorditas and the tortilla shells were heavy and bland. I love carbs, so if that part of the meal is lacking I'm going to be a sad girl. Pros Quick friendly service made to order amazing guacamole Great prices Clean Cons Parmigiana cheese instead of shredded cheese? Not enough sour cream, it also seemed watered down. Chicken was not a flavorful as I would like Next time I am going to try the pulled pork, and I am going to stick with tacos because this place is brand new and worth another try.

My husband and I go to Sombrero two or three times a week. Ever since we moved from the West Coast, where there is a good number of Mexican restaurants in every city, we have been trying to find a place that serves authentic, flavorful, and home-made meals from Mexico. If you are in Reservoir Avenue, on your way to Garden City for a shopping spree, Sombrero is the perfect stop for lunch with your friends. The family is very friendly, and make your tacos, burritos and enchiladas in front of your eyes. Everything looks clean and new. If you are into tacos, I recommend the Pastor and the chorizo tacos. However, I just discovered the quesadillas with Pastor and they are to die for. They make their own mole sauce and their red and green sauces.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon we all loved our orders! We ordered almost everything on the menu with sides of Guacamole yum! I definitely recommend trying whatever you get "al pastor" (marinated pork) it's very flavorful. All the other meats are great too. Basically, you can't go wrong with whatever you order. The food came out fast and the server was attentive. If I were to complain about anything, it would be their dishware which included Styrofoam cups and an unstable plate. Still my stomach and I left happy! I will definitely return!

I discovered Sombrero while driving around looking for a place to eat. I was tired of everything else in the area and decided to give it a shot. The place is small and extremely clean. The employees are friendly and happy to make suggestions. I have been there many times since my initial discovery and I'll be back soon. The only reason this establishment gets 4 out of 5 stars is parking can sometimes be a pain due to location.

This place is no joke. Honest, clean, and delicious. Simple presentation; gets right to the tasty point. Try the Horchada: cinnamon, vanilla, and rice drink puréed (takes 8 hrs to prepare!!!) I had the steak fajitas, my wife had the mole poblano.

  • Pablo G.

The burritos at Sombrero's were pretty good. We tried the "barbacoa" and "al pastor" meat and they were tasty. Their medium salsa was very tasty. I don't eat very spicy so I can't judge that salsa. Overall, very good food at reasonable price with friendly service. Note: you will need to look for parking and walk to Sombrero's.

I was happy I gave this place a try and I will go back! Took my kids there for lunch, and it was clean, friendly, comfortable, and although it has a small menu it has something for everyone. Definitely has that small restaurant, personal feel and is also very clean. I thought the prices were really reasonable. I tried the beef torta sandwich and it was great. They recently opened, so I agree with a prior review that it's important to spread the word so their business grows and they stick around.

All I can say is yum! tacos were great and the price was right. It was the perfect spot for a quick & tastey lunch.

Sombrero is just what I've been waiting for!!! My go-to Mexican joint is usually El Rancho Grande in Providence, but I really just enjoy their enchiladas, rice and beans, and carne asada nachos. I've had the tacos there and they were good, but nothing really outstanding. A week or two ago, my sister spotted a sign for a new Mexican place and we got really excited. We went in one day and no one was in there but it didn't matter, we wanted to give it a shot. We got 3 bistec (steak) tacos each with some salsa verde on the side. We also asked for a slice of avocado to each taco. Yes, I know it's not authentic but it's delicious and I love avocados so whatever. They cook everything to order which I LOVE. I feel like even if the place was jam-packed with people or if we were the only ones in there, the quality of the food and service wouldn't change, and that's what I really like. It was very fast and the tacos were so hot I couldn't even pick them up for a minute or two. Not complaining -- I love extra hot food. It was delicious. Simply cooked steak that was very tender, topped with some chopped raw onions and cilantro. A squeeze of lime and it was so good. I regretted not ordering 4....or 5. The avocado was fresh and the butteryness brought the whole thing together for me. I was bummed their salsa verde (green) wasn't spicy, but that's my only complaint. Since then, I think we've been back to Sombrero about 3 times...haha. I seriously want to eat it every other day! I tried a few different things during my other trips. I tried a tostada which was really good but I thought the tortilla was a bit oily and the frijoles (beans) a bit thin. I didn't even mind, and I ate it all in about 3 minutes, but those would be my only minor complaints. We tried their roja (red) salsa and loved it a lot more than the verde. I tried a pork taco and was SO pleasantly surprised that there were chunks of pineapple inside the marinade!!!!! Maybe this is a thing that most people know about, but I had no idea Mexican cuisine had some awesome pineapple-pork combination. It was sooooo good. The pineapple made it even juicier and the flavors bursted in my mouth. Ahhh I'm getting so hungry. Next time I want to try their horchata. I love that milky Mexican goodness. It's fairly new, but I hope more people check this place out. For the quality of food, they deserve a lot of business! The prices are very cheap and the family who owns/cooks/runs the joint are so nice. I hope Sombrero stays forever!

Honestly I think it is the best taco shop in RI. I used to live in SoCal and pretty much gave up on Mexican food in RI, but the family that runs this place is legit. Definitely eat here!

Sombrero is a nice family owned restaurant with good food and prompt service! Parking is tough but the huarache was so delicious that I'll definitely be back for more.

I have been here quite a few times. It's a small family run place that is quick when it comes to service and the food is good. I usually get the tacos and my boyfriend gets the burritos. I have tried all of their meat options and I am partial to the barbacoa and carnitas! The place is very inexpensive too! Definitely a good spot if you're craving a few yummy tacos topped with cilantro and onion!

So this place is the best...I had the sombrero burrito and it was the best burrito I have ever had! so let's break this down, the burritos are larger than Chipotle's and they taste amazing. The only reason I am giving it a 4 (I wish I could have given it a 4.5) is because their parking is terrible, the place would drastically be better if they had better parking. There is 2 parking spots. 2!!! Like come on that is not enough parking for such a fantastic place like that. In conclusion, Best Food in North America, Worst Parking Known to Man

Excellent traditional Mexican food. The guacamole and salsa were both made to order. Chips were warm and crispy! We had the enchiladas and a burrito. Both were very flavorful. Prices were very reasonable. They do not have a liquor license so you may be able to byob, I just forgot to ask for future reference! Parking is very minimal, only two spots available.

Taco Nirvana!!!! Was dying to come here after reading the reviews and viewing the photos. Ordered pulled pork tacos, bean tostadas, and rice and beans for my cousin and I for take out. Everything was amazingly delicious and so, so fresh. This is authentic Mexican....real food.....not to be confused with Taco Hell or Cilantro Grille type places. You get four tacos for $6, and they are filling while still being healthy (no grease, quality meat, with fresh toppings)! . The restaurant itself is immaculate and bright with daylight, and the owners extremely kind and friendly. I can't wait to go back again, and will recommend to everyone I know. Try Sombrero and you too will be addicted! Spread the word!

Small place. As in 6 tables. But they do take out. I had the chips and salsa as well as the mole something or other (I can't remember what it was called) with Verde sauce. The salsa that came with the chips had the perfect level of heat that came after all the other great flavors. I wish it was a little chunkier though. The mole came with rice, beans, and tortillas. Words cannot describe the deliciousness of everything on my plate, including the rice and beans. The Verde sauce was really frickin' good. I can't wait to go back and try more things!

Nicely decorated, small but comfortable restaurant with attentive and friendly servers. Have been there twice, both times the food was very good. The sombrero burrito was especially delicious. Good sized portion, flavorful, without being overly salty. Will definitely go again.

Authentic Mexican at its finest. Fresh ingredients and a friendly family run waitstaff. The nachos are fantastic. Great tacos, and some amazing tamales. Nice to have such great food at a great price so close by

Okay, as far as mom and pop shops go, I am a fan. The food is done up fresh and it is really good. They do not have a huge menu and their price is a little on the high side, but you can get in and out with happy taste buds for less than a tenner. So is it authentic? Well I am from Texas and I eat Tex-Mex. Most of what folks call 'authentic' I have never had. But, that does not mean it ain't tasty, because this stuff is. And I want to tall you I have not had a tamale in this town that is better.

Authentic food and drink (soda from Mexico! ). Price was higher than I expected. Visited on a cold night which was felt every time someone opened the door. Staff and service were great! English speaking but I got to speak some Spanish with them too. Clientele families.

delicious Mexican food that is quite authentic. they even have tamales! tacos are simple but amazing. reasonable prices too. only drawback is that it's pretty small inside so definitely recommend doing take-out!

  • Doro R.

This place is set up like an old school diner but there is table service. There's no booze but the prices are perfect (cheaper than some of the other authentic Mexican place around) and everything is made right there in front of you. The staff was really nice and the food was so good that I had to order tamales, tacos, and flautas to go after I'd finished my meal.

Nice small mom and pop restaurant clean, quiet and delicious. Had the steak plate and my son had taquitos and quesadilla. the steak was just right great spice nice and juicy with yellow rice, yummy refried beans and nice small salad with just the right amount of oil. My son also loved his food. Will definitely be back soon it was a nice find .

I went here for lunch and ordered the 4 tacos for $6, I received two with chicken and 2 with pulled pork. They came with onions and cilantro. It might be too much Taco Bell but I was wondering where the lettuce, cheese, and tomato was? I guess you can add them as extras. It still tasted good just not very filling. The shells were like two mini soft shells stuck together. You can get the soda out of a can or from Mexico. I tried the Mexico one but it tasted like regular coke to me The tacos, soda, and I split the nacho app came to $12. I will probably stick to Taco Bell, but mostly because I am cheap.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
