Imagine a world where the great recession of 2007-2009 never happened. An idyllic community of gas lit lanterns where no one is even aware of the backdoor dealings at Lehman Bros and JP Morgan Chase. Where people don't walk around, scratching their heads and looking up at the heavens, saying "Where's my bailout, Obama?" or "My flip flop just snapped in front of this store that might sells magic broomsticks, thanks Obama. Oh wait, what's that across the street? An old timey diner with all the bells and whistles that push your 1970's love for the 1950's nostalgia through the roof." Maybe in there, there isn't a dark future where a hot roast beef sandwich cost upwards of eighteen dollars and their is drought in California killing off all the cows and innocent vegetables. [How about Tom Selleck stealing all that water? When I saw his mug on the nightly news I figured he had, to have died in a horrible accident. I mourned for Tom Selleck until I realized he wasn't dead, and indeed, a water thief. (Look it up, it'll taint your Magnum P.I. re-runs for life)] I arrived at the Wellsboro Diner well aware of the last decade, but after a hike at the PA's grand canyon, taking in it's scenic vistas I could almost forgive congress for their half hearted attempts at partisanship. I was with my roommate Kirstin, whose best friend was visiting her friends at a swimming pool. Jer, not as cranky as usual with his girlfriend. Robbie, whose life I learned more about in the two hour drive too the Grand Canyon, and Bob (or Rob as he's known in Penn State and the Western Parts of the country) who had, had enough of me lamenting the loss of the Elby's Big Boy in Wilkes-Barre. We were a haggard and broken group, soaked from heavy rain fall and muddy from immense stair-climbing. (I don't know what that's all about: At the PA grand canyon you don't really hike as much as you climb stairs. Like actual stairs, built by the CCC. #ThanksFDR) Since the rain fall had made the stairs slippery, I had declared aloud that I preferred a dry stair, and dry stairs the Wellsboro Diner supplied. As I looked over the menu, I nearly missed the holy grail of diner food - The Hot Roast Beef sandwich. Luckily Bob spotted the old girl with ease, and pointed it out cheerfully as I began to ponder why a red onion is called a red onion when it's purple. When our food arrived, I liked what they had done with the hot roast beef. Instead of serving it open face, they constructed an actual sandwich and then poured a gallon of gravy on it. Which of course made my day because that meant two pieces of soggy gravy soaked bread. The gravy, sadly, could have used some work. Kirstin was not a fan of the coleslaw, she said it was very sweet - and Jer's girlfriend said that it might actually be vanilla yogurt. I didn't want to eat vanilla yogurt style coleslaw so I actively ignored it. Wellsboro is a place with an old movie theater, a pop culture store, a store for witches, a Steak house that is closed on Sundays - a courthouse with honest architecture invoking a time when peoples civil liberties were being stepped all over. I don't think I'd fit in, in Wellsboro - although we did see a sort of meth-head, chain smoking cigarettes and yelling in the streets, and a baby in a jeep with the top off. I'm not saying that the meth head and the people neglecting the baby are my kind of people - but their closer. The Wellsboro Diner felt separate from the world of what may be an elitist society, who often argue over what's the best antique shop in town, it felt like a home, as all diners do to me. They speak to a certain down-to-earth portion of my soul that feels like you should call a red onion a purple onion. There were no frills or laces here - just coffee mugs, and honest, decent food. Although sadly the Burger was compared to a Denny's Burger... that's of course why when your at a diner, you go for the hot roast beef sandwich! Well done, Wellsboro Diner, keep doing you.

Open at 6 AM! Good coffee and lots of it. No newspapers, but good quick service and tasty breakfast. Take note of the variety of homemade cookies available if you eat here. Also the old fashioned toaster...put the bread in slots and it turns in a slow circle until it's toast! Nice start to the morning...try it if you are in Wellsboro .

If you're looking for a home style meal, vintage charm and to catch up on the local gossip, then the Wellsboro Cafe is the place to be! There's a variety of comfort foods to try from, from a cheese omelette to liver and onions. This visit I had a cheese omelette with delicious home fries and savory rye toast. Hot tea came with its own little carafe, which was really neat looking.

Amazing service and everything a diner should be. Huge portions, piping hot and terrific coffee!! I had a delicious omelet and crispy potatoes. So nice to have decent eggs for once!

Stopped in here before heading back home after a weekend camping trip. It is pretty much your typical small-town diner; a bit run-down (but nothing egregiously so), efficient service, and most patrons and employees knowing each other. Despite this (and a somewhat curt welcome by one of the servers upon entrance), as soon as we sat at the counter the young woman at the grill made us feel more than welcome. Although cooking every food order (often coming in at a furious pace), she quickly grabbed us drinks, made sure our coffee was topped up, and checked in a few times once our food arrived. For being a diner the breakfast menu felt a bit small, but all the staples were still there. I opted for scrambled eggs with home fries, toast, and sausage, which really hit the spot after a weekend outdoors. My friend got the western omelet (which I stole a piece of) that was also very tasty. Prices were in line with what I would expect, a breakfast for 3 ran us about $20. A great way to end a camping trip in PA's "Grand Canyon" and I would return for breakfast again the next time I'm in the area.

Great for a hearty breakfast in a nostalgic traincar...but the food has never been noteworthy. Desserts are decent...nothing crazy or creative, but simple/decent. They are not open late.

Food was great. My mom and I both got the filet cut sirloin. Service was a little slow but not terrible. I would have given more stars but we were seated at a high table near the bar and the seats are not very comfortable. Also, I would not recommend this place for a quiet meal. It was a very rowdy atmosphere. If you go, request to be seated away from the bar area.

In Wellsboro for back-to-back Half Marathons in the PA Grand Canyon & looking for decent food for a few days. Not really a "diner" kinda couple, but it came highly recommended by friends who rode bike in the area. We were highly impressed by our omlettes & hashbrowns at 7pm! Cute little trailor dive w/ excellent food. We even returned the next night for eggs & pancakes. You won't find much in this town, but the diner whips up some fine food for great prices!

Great look and feel, but ultimately disappointing. With its diner car, prime location, and gift shop, Wellsboro Diner gets a lot of visitors and tourists throughout the year. But I don't know any locals who do. That's because the food is average and the prices less so. I had a roast beef sandwich and was underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, just not amazing. I came back a couple more times for breakfast and it was below average. I really wanted to like this place, but the food and the prices for that food left me unmotivated to do so.

Sweet lil 40's diner in middle of county seat. Home cookin. Friendly and fun. But.... only one but... New Yorkers or Californians need not read further. the small iced tea is $2.49. Coffee or hot tea only $1.69. Breakfast only $3.99. Go figure. Iced tea musta been out of season.

Great small town diner - sells items in the back with a small gift shop like area... realizing there is a tourist group up here in the 3000' altitude of Northern PA.. somehow there is!

Phenomenal food, wonderful atmosphere and a great breakfast option following a trip to the PA Grand Canyon. This place is the dictionary definition of a diner - cheap breakfast food that tastes great, good coffee, attentive and courteous waitstaff, and a relaxing and carefree atmosphere. A word of caution - they don't have a ton of space so be careful rolling in with a large group of people! I witnessed a large group of people be turned away because they simply couldn't accommodate the 10 of them. A group of 4-6 should be no problem though. I will definitely be coming back here again!

Friendly staff. Food was very average. We left feeling disappointed, expected more bc of the reviews we read.

Pretty good food, super old diner. 2 parking spots. right in the heart of beautiful picturesque wellsboro, pa. We had fried chicken w/ mashed potatoes, baked haddock and country steak & eggs. The service was alright, and they had a little gift shop at the end of the diner that had all kinds of shirts and postcards. once of the cooler things was that they had vintage photos of other diners from across pennsylvania. bathroom was clean, staff was friendly.

I stopped by here a few Saturday afternoons ago with my fiance for lunch. We arrived shortly after noon to a line coming out of the diner door. Upon entering, I saw that there was nowhere to stand and so stood there waiting with the door open only to get yelled at to shut the door since the air was on. This scene ended up playing out many more times while we were there and I wonder if it would have been more efficient to have such a sign taped to the door. Once inside, the diner looked much how you would expect with a lunch counter on one side and a number of booths throughout the rest. Even though there was a line waiting for tables I noticed that there were two seats at the counter and after asking some of the other waiting guests, proceded to sit at them. These seats ended up being right in front of the flat top grill and I found it fun to watch the cook throughout our stay. After we were seated my fiance and I grabbed some menus only to be disappointed by the lack of selections. While there were a decent amount of good looking breakfast items, the lunch menu seemed to be rather small. I ended up deciding on the chicken sandwich which came with peppers, cheese and side of fries while my fiance went with the chefs salad. Even though there were a number of waitresses in the diner our server ended up being the cook who was remarkably efficient. After not too long of a wait the cook got to our meals and essentially made them right in front of us. My sandwich ended up being fairly decent and I really enjoyed the flavor of the chicken breast. Meanwhile the fries ended up being a mixture of nice and crispy and limp and soggy which could probably be attributed to the fact that we saw a waitress dunk a basket of already cooked fries back into the fryer for a couple of seconds. My fiance also enjoyed the flavor of her chicken breast although I thought that the salad was a bit sparse for a chefs salad. The bottom line for me is that I might stop back here again in the future but would rather give another place in town the chance first. I know that it was a diner and while the food tasted ok, I thought that there was quite a limited selection and that it was a bit overpriced.

We stopped in for breakfast recently while we were up in the area camping at Cherry Springs State Park and hiking in the PA Grand Canyon. Great little diner in a small town full of character! Pancakes were great and the atmosphere was fun. If your just driving through town on Route 6 or in the area, stop in and you won't be disappointed!

Decent diner fare, I was drawn in by the charming young waitresses and the cool architecture, the diner was built in 1938 and placed in this location in 1939. diner fare tends to be unoriginal traditional American meat and potatoes fare, nothing exciting, one goes to a diner for the atmosphere, but I thought the food here was a little better than the average diner. the pie is great and they have a big selection!!! the atmosphere is pretty cool, the building is cool, and the waitresses are pretty nice, and well they are pretty pretty too.

You get what you pay for here so don't expect anything special. I ordered a cheeseburger with bacon (doesn't come with fries, had to order separately). The burger came with the bun meat and cheese. No lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, nothing. For around $7 you are better of going to McDonalds.

We stopped here on the recommendations of some friends on the way to see the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. The Good: easily the best hot roast beef sandwich my wife and I have ever had (with real mashed potatoes and real gravy). Coffee was good. The Bad: easily the most expensive hot roast beef sandwich we've ever had ($12.99 each!) with no sides beyond the mashed potatoes. No "cup of soup", vegetables, etc. More of the The Bad: while the "bones" of this historic rail car diner are nice, the diner is in dire need of an overhaul. It is in such disrepair that it's depressing to eat in. The vinyl seat on my wife's side of the booth was all torn and the filling exposed. The top surface of all of the tables were well worn away from the sliding of thousands of plates. The linoleum floor tiles are broken/cracked in many places, with chunks missing exposing the subfloor below. While I never expect a diner to be a 5-star dining experience, I do feel that $12.99 a plate is a bit much when the atmosphere of the diner is so run-down. $6.99 a plate would be more appropriate.

Good value. Grilled chicken sandwich was very good. Excellent western omelette. Nice atmosphere - there's not many places around like this any longer.

Overrated. Good service but limited menu for a diner. The food itself wasn't too bad, minus the shitty bun on the cod sandwich.

8/25/2013 This diner looks like a diner from the 50's and it looks like it hasn't been updated since the 50's. The food is diner food.- overcooked meat smothered in gravy but tasty and somewhat filling,. The staff was very friendly and service quick. The locals most definitely like this restaurant. The price is right. The pot roast special I had and the sliced hot beef sandwich my wife had looked like the beef came from the same cut of meat, the difference being that the sandwich beef was thin sliced and the "pot roast" was thick sliced. It is not that slow-cooked chuck roast you cook at home to make this cut of meat tender. Seating is tight; the display cases of bakery items look old.

I enjoyed sitting at the counter at this cute, historic diner in Wellsboro, PA. It's been here since 1929 according to their signage, and it's a historic building worth checking out. I had a salad, mashed potatoes + gravy, and soup, only because I was trying to eat lighter/healthy for my entire road trip. But the sandwiches I saw coming out of the kitchen looked HUGE and DELICIOUS, especially the chili cheeseburger and roast beef sandwich covered in gravy. Oh the gravy - it's legit. This isn't "Brown gravy," it's the real stuff, with real flavor. Yummmm. Prices were very good, too. I saw few things over $10 on this menu. Portions looked generous.

The experience of eating in a vintage diner is worth the visit in itself. The cheese omelet was good but the hash browns were better. Great service and reasonable prices.

The Wellsboro Diner is such a great place to eat! The place itself is an old train car and that just makes the visit even better. the food here is amazing its like a big serving of a home cooked meal every time. I had turkey gravy and mashed potatoes with apple pie after and it was delicious! I also had the pancakes for the breakfast and I can promise you that you wont go away hungry or unhappy. Its a cute little place with really nice people and amazing food!

The best word to describe the food at this diner is average. Cute environment inside a railway car. Fun, down-home waitresses. But both of our dishes were not anything to write home about. The fries were McDonald's style: thin and crisp. Everything was cooked well, but lacked flavor or imagination. Some of the other dishes that other Yelpers suggested were either not on the menu or they were out of. I am still looking for that wonderful little out-of-the-way place with spectacular food.

I'm a health freak so there wasn't a lot of options for me. However, the server was nice and the service was fast. My partner would love to come back, though! I did enjoy the atmosphere of a real 1920s diner car.

The Diner is now a historical landmark and feature attraction for out-of-towners. Be that as it may, it went from being a local standard featuring good food and good prices to being an overpriced tourist trap and gift shop. The previous owners did us locals right, but since then I don't find myself there too often. When I did go, the hot roast beef sandwich with fries w/gravey was my favorite. If you're a tourist or out-of-towner check it out, but we locals aren't impressed anymore.

Typical diner food. Service was friendly and food came out quickly. The price was cheap. I don't expect gourmet good from a diner, but it was satisfying for lunch :) would definitely drop by again for a quick lunch if I was in the area.

The atmosphere makes up for the typical diner food. There aren't many places like this left. The service is pretty good and your food is out quickly. The hot roast beef sandwich with gravy was good. The beef was tender and the gravy was the right consistency. It could have used some more seasoning, but that's why S & P is on the table.

This is a fantastic place to eat. One, it is the cleanest diner we have ever eaten in. Two, the breakfast was perfect. Corned beef hash is my test food at most diners and it was homemade and perfectly cooked. Service was four stars as well. Recommend this place to anyone.

Very quaint diner and a hub for the community. The potatoes were absolutely fantastic. Weak toast but solid otherwise. Food 3.5 ambiance 4.5. An amazing piece of functional architecture.

This is a nice little diner - nice experience. The food was just ok. The place smells a little moldy. It was good to try once, but we won't be back.

Sure your not going to get the greatest meal you have ever had in your life here... But for the price you pay the food is pretty good. The feel of dining in an old 1920's diner car is worth the experience in itself, and you are in the heart of historic Wellsboro, PA. I suggest giving the Vegetable Soup a try or if there for breakfast the sausage omelet is always a tasty treat as well. Overall I love to support these type of places and keep the history that is quickly fading somewhat in tact. Small towns and Small Restaurants a beautiful side of America.
