Nothing fancy but the food was solid. The waitstaff was unassuming and helpful. The proportions were perfect The cheesy shrimp didn't even need the flour tortillas. The dinner especiale was a great way to try multiple items. Sangria was a tasty surprise. Get the big margarita with an extra shot of tequila. It was definitely worth the stop.

If doing the PA turnpike, then this place is an ideal spot for lunch. Less than .5 mile from exit. Authentic cuisine. Fresh ingredients. Served hot. Clean place through and through. Friendly and very attentive staff. Perfect for families. The only thing I can knock them on is the children's chicken fingers were a bit over done and thus 'hard' outer crusts...

Rey-Azteca is a great place to get some delicious food that is also easy on the wallet. The chips and especially the salsa are tasty. I had the tostada which was very good. I also had the sampler where you pick two items. The burrito was good and the enchilada was even better. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Not authentic Mexican, but much better than Ruby Tuesday's or fast food. One of the best options for out-of-towners, which is why I'm giving it four stars (a relative rating). Plus, it has vegetarian options! If you choose your dishes carefully you'll be happy. The veggie fajitas were a big win, and my grandmother liked her chicken taco salad. OTOH the burritos and quesadillas were disappointing.

We had an excellent lunch here after a long morning of snowboarding. Nice, not overly done, decor; good, quiet background music. Service was very attentive and quick. Food was delicious and was served quickly and hot. Would definitely return!!

Very nice decor. Very nice staff. Good and sumptuous food. My family enjoys this place. Wish something like this was closer to where I live in eastern PA.

We were hungry and decided to take the next exit. Road trip rule with us is no fast-food or commercial chain restaurants. A few turns and we spotted a few places and my teen had a hankering for Mexican so ended up at Rey Azteca. We arrived right before dinner rush so we were seated immediately. Lots to look at (fun eye-spy for the little ones). What I noticed immediately was that a large selection of Jarritos (Mexican sodas with unusual and fun flavors like tamarind and mango and lime). Menu is large - combination dinners, burritos, specials, fajitas and steak and pork dishes. I had the burritos verde - nice kick ask for sour cream just in case its too much heat. My husband had the burrito supreme which he really enjoyed and the teen ordered one of the combination dinners that came with a taco. He gave it a two thumbs up. We also ordered a side of guacamole - chips and salsa where brought quickly after we sat down. The salsa is step up from tomato sauce but there was plenty of hot sauce etc... to add as needed. Service was efficient and the waiter friendly. As the dinner hour progressed the phone rang regularly for take out orders. Several people walked in and placed orders to go. The dining room was filling up as we left. A popular spot for sure. This was a gem of a find and if we are out this way again we will be going back.

This place is awesome! The dessert was awesome as well! I loved my meal (Pollos Adobe). It was so good that I'll have to learn how to make it since I'm from out of town and may not be able to try it again here. Try this place... You won't regret it.

We always stop here on our yearly trip to Somerset (this is our 3rd or 4th visit) and are never disappointed! I usually get the enchilladas...I once had homemade enchilladas when I was a kid and they lived in my dreams ever since...I tried and tried to find a place that could make them the same way and finally found them here at Rey Azteca's! The frozen margaritas are good also. They are big though, so I'd suggest a medium. The only thing I don't like about this place is their small parking lot...but I can live with that! Will be back!

I took a break from a turnpike trip and came here for lunch, guided by Yelp reviews. I was not disappointed! I'd never had Mole Poblano (chicken in mole sauce) before. It came with guacamole and a salad, as well as rice. Delicious! I'm always happy to have real brewed ice tea. I succumbed to temptation and ordered flan for dessert. This was a very good experience overall. Service was courteous and prompt. Ambience is casual and pleasant. And very reasonable prices.

I went there twice and went pretty basic both times. You know...quesadilla, burrito, taco, etc. To sum this place up in one sentence: Good food, great people, and good atmosphere. There really isn't anything negative that can be said. The food is consistent, but isn't quite deserving of a fifth star. The service is outstanding and very personable. The atmosphere is fun and inviting every time. If I were a regular to Somerset, I would most certainly be a regular.

  • Nunya B.

Great Mexican fare and good drinks! The fajita salad is a sure bet. The soft tacos are great. They also take special requests such as chorizo tacos which are not on the menu. Portions are huge and the price is good as well!

  • Brett B.

A very warm and welcoming atmosphere greeted me when I first walked into the restaurant. Even the kitchen staff was friendly and welcoming. The food was incredibly good and reminded me of what authentic Mexican food should taste like. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves real authentic Mexican cuisines.

I visited Somerset on Business and found out about this place from my hotel concierge. The location was pretty good, just off the turnpike. The food is amazing, service is fairly quick. I recommend getting the steak and cheese dip with na

A totally tolerable Mexican restaraunt in the middle of no where. Margaritas were a bit too sweet but they were strong and certainly put some pep in my step. The lunch deals are Awesome! 6 people ate here for less than $10 a head with tip. Can't beat that.

  • Zoran K.

I absolutely love this place. The service is friendly and very quick I eat here almost every Saturday. The food is flavorful. The portions are the right size. The warm tortilla chips and fresh salsa accompany every order. If you are in Somerset and are looking for a reasonable, tasty Mexican meal this is your place.

Came here twice over our spring break ski trip, the food is great and a good value. I had the lunch burrito the first time and the enchiladas Verde on my second trip, both come with their tomatillo sauce which is delicious. Margaritas come frozen or on the rocks, both are good and the medium is quite huge. Chips and salsa are awesome too!

My friends and I ate dinner here one night while visiting the area for Somerfest last month. We were all eager to see if the Mexican food up north was as good as it is down south. The restaurant is cozy, booths and tables, casual dining that was perfect for us after a day of sightseeing. They were fairly busy but we got a table, ordered drinks and settled in to look at the menu. Aztecas has a fabulous selection of Mexican food on their menu as well as steaks, shrimp and vegetarian dishes. We decided on chicken and beef fajitas for the group. The food was ready in no time and turned out to be fantastic! Prices are very reasonable and the service was great. If you are passing through Somerset make a point to stop in and eat, you won't regret it!

My husband and I visited Rey Azteca this past weekend while staying in the Somerset area. We'd heard good things about this restaurant and we were not disappointed. The service was fantastic! They were attentive and quick to bring chips and salsa, refill drinks and take our orders. The food was delicious. My husband had combination #32 and I had the Burrito Supreme. We would highly recommend them both.

  • John P.

The best Mexican food I've had in this area--infact it's some of the best I've ever had. I'm a sucker for chile rellenos, and these are the best Iv'e had. My favorite meal they serve is theGrande Especial , which should be more food than you can finish. It includes a burrito, an enchilada, a chalupa, a chile relleno, beans and rice , and nachos-a ton of food! This stuff is great!

Ask for their hotter salsa "the guys in the backseat". Wrong/spellcheck. The guys in the back eat...it's punchier and more condensed than the stock marinara-tasting bore.

Great find. We were immediately welcomed by an extremely happy and polite restaurant staff, which is always an added bonus. Fast and speedy service from the chips and salsa, which were very good all the way to our meals arriving. They offer a great selection of food, especially under the lunch menu. Our total bill for great food and soft drinks ended up being cheaper than what it would have cost down the road at Wendy's. The food was delicious, this was overall one of the better Mexican restaurants we have come across during our travels. Would 100% recommend stopping here over a fast food stop in Somerset.

Arrived for a late lunch while passing through on a road trip. Place is bright and clean. Service is prompt and friendly. Nice atmosphere. Very authentic. Chips and salsa came right out and were good. We ordered the shrimp camarons or something like that. Everything was fresh and very tasty. Would definitely come back. If u like spicy things, be sure to let them know. Our dishes were on the mild side as was the salsa. Which is fine by me.

Stayed in Somerset while skiing nearby and stopped in here for dinner with a group of four. I echo all the positive reviews others have provided. The restaurant had a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere with an attentive and friendly staff. All the dishes we ordered were great (I recommend the mole poblano) and the portions were very generous. The food was up there with any of the Mexican food I've had in the DC area and the prices are extremely reasonable. I will definitely go back the next time I'm in the area.

Called this place since no one else was open around 9 pm after skiing the whole evening. We drove through a blizzard to reach here but IT WAS WORTH IT! The food was SO GOOD and the portions were generous ! The staff was absolutely wonderful!! Great, large margaritas and a quaint atmosphere! This is a must try for anyone in the area!! This is the definition of Mexican food you always crave !!

  • Christina A.

Pros -- cheap, clean bathrooms, yummy mole poblano, friendly staff, good take out containers and close to highway. Cons -- The carnitas were gross and fatty. Smelled so bad we pulled over to throw them out. Rest of food was edible but not great. Universal dislike of the cheese used in quesadillas. I lived in Mexico for a year so I may be a harsher critic of Mexican food. Would try something else if I were in town again.

My family and I are staying at the Holiday Inn Express here for a family ski trip and wanted a good, quality dinner. After searching through reviews on yelp we found this restaurant, Rey-Azteca, & it definitely was as good as everyone else said. Considering it was a week day, there was no dinner time rush and we were sat right away. Chips & salsa were brought immediately and within 10 mins we had our order in and on the way. The staff was very nice and quick. Our food was delicious! Everything was flavorful & served fresh and hot! I highly recommend this place!!

This is it for Mexican food in Somerset.. Take it or leave it. I really like it. The food is delicious! I like the chimis, I suggest the dinner, just because the lunch one really is not all that filling. Portions are small. All you can eat chips and homemade salsa. YUMMM. I like to order my food to go, it's very fast, less than 15 mins. On the higher end, price wise for somerset.

  • Ryan M.

Nice restaurant and a great stop while traveling along I-70 if you want to avoid the chains, fast food joints, and service plazas and actually sit down for a meal. Ordered 3 soft tacos, cheese, bean and beef. The salsa (our Mexican benchmark) was great. Prices were very reasonable. Better than any DC Mexican restaurant by far (in the cheap, easy Mexican category).

Oh boy, people....really? NOT authentic Mexican, heheh. But the food was definitely better than what you'd get at a fast food restaurant. The decor was really cool, so plus one for that. If you're doing the horizontal drive across PA, this place is definitely worth a stop since it's right off the highway, and, like I said, better than T-Bell or Wendy's. Please don't expect five star authentic Mexican flavors, like you'll find at some hole-in-the-wall establishments (most likely located in the southwestern USA). The chips were severely mediocre, but the salsa was pretty tasty. There was something about it that was just a little bit different, and I liked that. I ordered huevos rancheros, but probably should have stuck to something more standard, like a taco. They were nice there, and the waitress picked up on the fact we were in a rush. Food was literally out in two minutes, and the bill was taken care of quickly as well. I'm not saying I WOULDN'T go here again, but I probably won't. If I randomly happen to find myself driving through PA again, I'll probably hunt out a different restaurant. But if this was the only option, I guess I'd stop.

  • Scarlet S.

I liked the decor, it wasn't over the top, but it was definitely Mexican. We were seated immediately, our waiter was awesome, and our food came out ridiculously fast. The food was hot and very tasty, and everyone went home with a full stomach. Their menu is super long, and it was difficult selecting just one entree, which makes me think that it would be easy to go back and try something new and equally wonderful each visit. Check it out! You won't regret it. (P.S. Did I mention the low prices?!)

I'm always looking for authentic Mexican cuisine while on the road and there was no disappointment upon discovering Rey-Azteca at their Somerset location. Within a minute of walking in, I'd gotten my order placed and was eagerly anticipating what many other patrons were so clearly enjoying. At 8 pm on a Friday, the cozy dining room was teeming with diners tucking into generous portions of delicious-looking food. I ordered the Burrito Cancun, stuffed with shrimp, bell peppers, tomatoes and onions, topped with a mild red salsa and served with yellow rice and refried beans. It arrived blazingly quick and piping hot in a portion that was generous but not overwhelming. The shrimp were plentiful and juicy; a delightful dish that could've stood on its own without my customary guacamole, sour cream and cilantro extras. The staff was friendly, attentive and quick. Decor was warm without being flashy and the tunes made for awesome seat-mambo. Above all, the price was perfect. I hear that they are family-owned and have more than one location. Well, they do it right, and more power to them (and to you.)

Chips and salsa are good but the rest of the food is fair at best. Stay away from beef burritos - the filling is like cat food consistency. Margaritas are big and strong.

  • Martin E.

My friends and I were in the area for a week so I checked reviews online and this place had great reviews. The service was great, food was great. We even ordered for pick up a couple days later. I'd recommend this place for sure.

Passing through town on the way west. Stopped here for dinner. Complimentary chips & salsa were very good. Especially liked that the chips weren't too salty. I had a very tasty beef chimichanga. My daughter had a quesadilla & my wife a spinach enchilada. I don't know how authentic it was, but we were all satisfied. I also liked the variety on the menu. Most Mexican places I've been to only have 3 or 4 options. This place had lots of different options.

This place was a breath of fresh air to Somerset. We needed a place that wasn't just your burger chain spot. This is as close to authentic as Somerset will get. Many things are close. I feel it has been adapted to the taste of the area. Not as spicey as yo uwould find and some things seem to have been done the "easy" way out.. The food is great! I have visited many times and wanted something different. The waitress helped me by suggesting the Flautas. YUMMMM they are like a taquito but bigger with cheese sauce on top and lettuce tomato and guac/sour cream in the middle. VERY GOOD! Something different and have never waited more than 10-15 min for our food ...

  • James V.

This was a nice place to stop and grab dinner on the way to Pittsburgh. The service was friendly and the margaritas were fantastic. I think there are a lot of places that may make more authentic and better Mexican food, but the prices are very reasonable and the food still pretty good.

  • Mary W.

This restaurant is fantastic! From the great atmosphere to the delicious food you can't beat it. The authenticity is wonderful and you can really appreciate the hard work that goes into making the food. Getting extra salsa and chips is a must if your hosting a party of mor than 3 but totally worth it. I LOVE it!

  • Tom L.

We had an excellent time at the restaurant. We took a bit of a chance but it definitely paid off. It has great authentic Mexican food, great chips and salsa and some amazing margaritas (and apparently a good Mojito, but I can't speak for that). The menu was pretty standard Mexican fair, but it was prepared extremely well. Give it a shot if you want Mexican food in Somerset!

A duplicate of Los Aztecas- a restaurant near our home at the eastern end of Pennsylvania. The food, decor and everything was very similar, but I don't think it's part of a chain. Good food and service. Not a high class eatery, but if you are looking for incredibly accurate Mexican food perhaps you should be eating in Mexico and not the middle of nowhere, PA. They do a very good job!

  • Rob C.

Excellent place to eat. Very good food, and extremely nice staff. The prices are also decent. It doesn`t matter who waits on you, anyone of them will refill your drink right away. They go out of their way to make your experience a good one. Have eaten there quite a few times and haven`t been disappointed yet.

  • Christine E.

Like many others writing here, my folks and I stopped to eat at Ray-Azteca while making the long trek across PA. I have to agree with other reviewers who say that this is not authentic - not that I'm an expert, but it doesn't really even come close to what I've had at other Mexican restaurants/homemade by friends. The guacamole was particularly disappointing (no lime? Really?). I would, however, give a thumbs-up to the bean dip (covered in queso blanco yummm). Probably the best food you're going to get in Somerset though, and it's not bad, all things considered.

  • Jenn P.

if you like authentic Mexican food this is the place to go.... very good service from the staff. Cheap prices for the food, and the portions are very large, so its a nice place to take the family if you're on a budget. The only gripe i have about this place is that the alcoholic beverages you can get from the bar are way too expensive for the type of place this is, its not a night club, but a family restaurant ( chill on the price of the drinks please!!!!!!) all and all its an excellent place to go and relax and have a decent meal.

    (5)
  • Jennifer B.

This place is AWESOME!!!! Food was fantastic, service was excellent and my Margarita was the bomb! There's not too much else here right off the TP (we're traveling between DC an PA) so this place was a nice surprise!!!

We drove 20 miles from Donegal to eat Mexican food. Fabulous decision. The food here was delicious! I ordered a beef soft taco with beans and rice. My husband ordered the burrito deluxe. Both meals had great flavor and were served piping hot. My favorite part of the meal was a carafe of fresh salsa on my table. Next time you could just give me an extra straw to suck down the salsa. If I am ever in the area I will come here again.

We live near DC and stay in Somerset when we ski at Seven Springs. We've been looking for good food here for a while now and eventually visited Rey-Azteca on the strength of the reviews here and I have to say - the 4 & 5 star reviews are spot on. This place is great! Authentic, honest Mexican food at great prices - right in downtown Somerset. Highly recommended.

OK food but not authentic Mexican (despite what Bing F said). Would not recommend. On the other hand, the place is clean, cheap, not far from the turnpike and fills the stomach.

I am from the DC area and it is hard to find a good restaurant in this part of Pennsylvania (i.e., in the boondocks). This is the best Mexican food I have had since leaving the DC area, and that is saying something. It stands up to the best Mexican I've had in the DC metro area. Service is fast, food is fresh and wait staff are very friendly. Portions are large and excellent! Ask for Noemi to serve you. She is sweet, friendly and knowledgeable and will bring you refills on the salsa and chips, AND she makes a mean margarita.

Great food. Fast service. Excellent prices. What more could you want?? I am addicted to their salsa too. You have to try it.

Somerset, unfortunately, is a land of chain restaurants. Or rather, it was, until family-owned Rey-Azteca came to town. The food isn't great, but keep in mind that out here in the sticks, standards must be lowered. I'm giving Rey-Azteca three stars for options, price, and good service.

One of the best mexican restaurants ever! I dine there every time I go to Somerset. The food is good, hot, and plentiful. Wait staff are prompt and personable. Rey Azteca is a good choice even if you don't like tomatoes.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
