Come here often, the place is dated and it could use a good scrubbing but the food is always good. The service is sometimes slow but when we go there we are never in a hurry. We understand this is homemade food and it takes time. The staff is always friendly and it's appreciated. My last meal consisted of meatballs and pasta salad and it was fantastic!! Can't wait to go back and try something new.

There was filth covering the art work they had inches from my head. Holes in the ceiling above my food. The service was horrible. The staff looked unhealthy and unhygenic. The food was terrible everything they served me was completely saturated in oil to the point that when I tried to eat my fries they were dripping. The burger completely fell apart. Everything was horrible and I hope they go out of business.

Watch out Shippenville, because your favorite pizza hut was sneakily replaced by Sweet Basil. Thankfully, both 'specialize' in Italian food, so it's not all that different. Similarities with Pizza Hut: 1. Everything is covered with cheese. 2. Everything comes with bread. 3. The service is slow. 4. Portions are huge. 5. There is absolutely nothing you can order that would slide in under 1000 calories. Even a salad, without cheese, without the breadbowl, would come in around 1000 cals. If you come here even once, you are definitely on the fast track to obesity! Differences: 1. Prices are higher than Pizza Hut for the food you get. 2. House bread is actually delicious and light and cakey somehow, but even a slice is likely 300 calories. Overall, if you're looking for a huge dish of pasta covered with cheese and grease for under $16 this is a good choice. You can get a lot healthier Italian food elsewhere in the area (within 20 miles) though, and at a lesser cost. I won't be back unless I all of a sudden need to gain 100lbs.

Road tripping through PA, decided to stop here for dinner. Basically a converted Pizza Hut, they serve Italian food as well as various appetizers. The place could use a face lift, but it wasn't horrible. I can't speak for the other entrees because I only ordered the wings, but they were actually pretty good.

One of the worst meals I've had in the clarion area. Only reason it got 2 stars was the fried cheese bread bowl appetizer thing was good, and my gfs pierogi lasagna she liked. I got manicotti, which weren't manicotti but just lasagna noodles folded over with ricotta in them, then smothered in olive oil and broiled until they were almost deep fried constancy. Then smothered in cheese and lacked any flavor. I added a meat ball, which tasted horrible and was pink in the middle. Not cool. Their red sauce is less a sauce than it is almost a chunky salsa of tomato and onions. The bread and dipping oil were decent, as well as the appetizer I attached a pic of. The service was not very good, I'll just leave it at that. Very slow. The worst part is this place is really expensive, especially for the area. I could have had a way better meal if we'd just driven to Dubois, and it probably would have been faster and half the price of this place. I like to try to support the local businesses, and gave this place another try after a soso first time, but won't be back again.

My friends and I are fairly new to the area and were looking for a non-chain place to eat. Even though this place at mixed reviews we decided to give it a try. The result was more mixed reviews.... My friends got the wings because it was wing night. They really enjoyed them! The long list of flavors was especially nice. I got the penne pasta with marinara sauce. It was AWFUL! I believe this was the first pasta entree that I haven't been able to eat. I love pasta and am usually pretty forgiving, but this dish was horrible. I didn't think you could screw up pasta with marinara sauce but I was wrong. Also, do not try the bruschetta. I am a huge bruschetta fan and the appetizer we had did not deserve to be called bruschetta. I could have made a better meal at home for half the price of what I paid!!!

Convenient off the I-80 so we stopped in for dinner. I like that it had a little (full) bar sectioned off from the bigger restaurant. Obviously an old Pizza Hut, but decorated cute. Salads were HUGE! I mean a salad costing about $8.00ish was enough to easily feed 2-3 people. All salads (except the house salad for $2.95) came on a large bread bowl which was flavored in garlic and I think a light cheese sprinkled over the bread. The warm bacon dressing that came with my spinach salad was delicious. They have 3 sizes of pizzas and I ordered the small ($6.95) Napoli and my boyfriend ordered the small margahrita pizza. Both were plenty big for 1 person (I could only eat 1/2 of mine & never even touched my salad). We both liked the toppings & the crust as well. Veggies on salad and pizza were fresh. Restaurant was clean & plenty of parking. They do not have jalapenos, what??? They do have peppercinos though, but no jalapenos. Ugh. I didn't catch all their hours of operations, but I think Mon & Tues was open until 9 pm, Wed-Thu 10 and Fri & Sat 11 pm. Sunday close at 8 pm or so. Something close to that. Sorry, that was a crappy reviews. The prices were reasonable. 2 small pizzas, a huge salad and drinks totaled under $50 after a 20% tip. Service was a slow & inattentive.

Good food and decent pricing. The area is so void of non-chain places that given the location it is quite superb. It is an Italian restaurant that offers some burgers and sandwiches. Everything is self made and fresh to order, excepting the lunch buffet. Taste warrants a 3.5 rating and given the locale I rounded up to 4.

Often when we are traversing western PA on 80, we wish there was a readily available restaurant for us to stop and get a good meal. Something close to the beaten path, but not on it.. Something with a little individuality, someplace that serves food that didn't come directly from a frozen carton in the back. Someplace that takes some pride in their service and their food. Sweet Basil seemed to be the place we have been searching for. It's just a few miles off of route 80. We were nervous, because the area it is in seemed to be very industrial, and the building Sweet Basil occupies is obviously an old Pizza Hut, its once red roof was at one point overpainted, but which is now peeling away. It offered us hope and dismay at the same time..a lovely name, a lovely sign, but a building that showed neglect. Stepping inside we saw more evidence of neglect..or at least hard use. Our server told us it had been 8 years since the restaurant opened, yet so much was unchanged. The Salad Bar and Buffet from the Pizza Hut were still intact and unchanged. The child booster seats were unmistakeable remnants. Even the much abused chairs were once supporting the backsides of Pizza Hut customers. So we had some understandable doubt about our food adventure. But the menu was simple, mostly classic Italian with a few local and regional favorites thrown in and a few twists I wasn't expecting. Opting to keep things light so I could drive on home without an after dinner nap, I had iced tea, fried Zucchini, which was, as advertised hand breaded in the kitchen. Our first surprise :) Next came the salad, which was tasty and fresh, served not in an industrial bread bowl, but in a fresh baked, no..perfectly baked pizza dough bowl. The bread had been lightly dusted with Mozzarella cheese and baked until it was all golden brown. My only criticisms of the salad were there was far too much iceberg lettuce..and despite listing fresh Mozzarella as an ingredient, was served with shredded Mozzarella..far too dry to be fresh. Despite these small problems, it was delicious, the bowl itself was amazing, and I only wish I had been able to sample some of my favorites, I wanted to try the Alfredo and I wanted to try their regional twist on lasagna.. a Perogie lasagna. mashed potatoes, onions, all with Alfredo sauce. A little scary..a little enticing. The service was friendly and timely. We were well cared for. Overall..we liked it, we'll come back for more. I see some reviews here that are radically different than my own, we will see how Sweet Basil holds up under the scrutiny of multiple visits.
