Good friend drove around Scranton for half an hour trying to find this place. He told us that two friends of his (Italians) had recommended it highly. When we pulled up we noticed the sign bragging "voted best Italian in Scranton 2009" and had high hopes. Scranton has a large Italian population and we've had some amazing home-cooked meals there. I found it astounding that this restaurant could be so mediocre and survive in such an area. The good: little warm pizza-dough triangles made of good Semolina and served up with a garlic- and fresh basil-rich buttery spread that was very nicely done. Everything went down-hill from there. Pasta e Fagiole utilized either canned broth or canned beans or both; the canned taste couldn't be hidden. There wasn't any decent stock used to make the soup, nor were enough onions, carrots or celery added. The tubetti pasta was firm, however; they get a point for good consistency. A fish special was surrounded by "risotto;" mounds of cooked rice with cheese insinuated into it. It wasn't risotto at all. The fish was done very nicely but was tasteless. The piccata sauce had been pre-prepared and was thickened with flour. It tasted like bottled lemon juice and salt. Even the capers used were inferior. And how can they use pasty, under-ripe refrigerated tomatoes with all the farms that surround Scranton? Thank God we opted not to have the Mozzarella and Tomato appetizer. Veal piccata fell victim to the same awful sauce. The escalopes of veal were tender enough but hadn't been seasoned at all before sauteeing. The portion was far from abundant but, I guess, worth the $18 they charged for it. A bowl of pasta moistened with tomato sauce accompanied the veal. The pasta hadn't been cooked in enough water and it tasted of un-cooked flour. The sauce consisted of (canned) tomato paste, oregano and over-cooked garlic. It was astonishingly bad. At first bite I thought it was the Sicilian influence (darker, richer sauces) but no, this was just bad. The waitress had, previously, mumbled something about the chefs being exhausted from cooking for an Italian festival, so I thought they'd cut corners. After we'd tipped the young lady generously, I offered my opinion about the sauce. She ran into the kitchen and came out saying that what we had was what they serve all the time. It's supposed to be this way. We avoided the "combination platters" included on the menu for the very reason that they offered up all the usual Italian-American culprits (lasagna, "parmigiana" etc.) that're often prepared as carelessly as our entrees. We figured that the chef would shine if given some dishes to execute which were a little more challenging. We'd told the waitress that we were from out of town; perhaps she thought we'd never return and perhaps that's why she didn't offer the choice of "soup or salad" with our entrees as she did for other tables. We'd arrived early so only heard about those sides after we'd finished dessert. The "house-made" desserts had been refrigerated and were from a box. In their defense, we didn't try the highly-recommended cannoli. Coffee was very good. We were driving so had nothing to drink, so can't vouch for the wine nor cocktails. Try somewhere else for Italian when in Scranton. That's what we're going to do when we return next month.

So-so food and service could be a bit more attentive/friendly instead of worrying about closing down the restaurant! I found that to be very annoying where I had to fight for the waitress attention whenever I needed something while she was packing/putting away things to close up the restaurant! In my defense my wife and I arrived @ 730 for dinner when the restaurant closes @ 900! Always pay attention to your customers first and foremost! Like I said food was so-so, not good. Pizza for one could've cooked another minute or two, it wasn't crispy enough and the toppings were runny (clams and peppers). Entrees were the only thing that saved this review from a 1 star review! Dessert cake (coconut) was stale and not worth the $5. Fountain sodas were flat! Would I go back, probably not! Should you go for the first time? You should consider for yourself after reading my review, that's all I'm saying on this one!

There food is pretty good. interesting pictures ion the walls though. kind of like 1988 never ended there. But the food make up for that. i like to walk here for a nice dinner then head into town. makes for s good start of an evening. the wait staff is pretty nice and efficient. i like when they are efficient. makes a restaurant all the better. you could have the best food in the world, but if you wait staff sucks, you screwed. not the case here though. super fast to refill a drink. food was prepared in an fair amount of time. you will find me eating here again and again.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY !! This place is horrible . Their gravy/sauce has a burnt taste . Their pasta is overlooked . Go somewhere you know is good already .

I love this place! My particular favorite is the chicken scaparelli with spinach. Most of the pasta and gnocchi are fresh (shaped pasta like rotini are boxed) and the rolls are baked in a wood-fired oven. I wish that the herbed butter that they give you with the rolls was real butter rather than margarine but I'm willing to overlook that because it's still pretty yummy. The pasta is always wonderfully al dente and the portions are HUGE! We always make it a point to stop in for a meal when we are in Scranton.

There are some wonderful family restaurants in Scranton and this among them. Excellent food and great service (see Chrissy). Don't miss this restaurant.

Passing through Scranton I stopped by this restaurant for lunch. It was a great lunch experience. Had a fantastic meal and Mary Ellen at the bar provided outstanding service!

Disappointing spaghetti and meat sauce. An Classic Italian dish they couldn't get right.

For this area this restaurant is a neat little place to hit. The service is friendly and the brick oven bread salad and olive oil a nice touch. I had seafood linguine. The seafood was good. Nice portion for the modest price The linguine noodles could be a little better. Not sure if they make these on site. You can't expect Mulberry St NYC level of goodness. But still it was very good.

This place is a little gem. The wood fired oven is a huge touch, and the bread that they serve is really top notch. I ordered their Alla Bianco pizza and was very happy with it. My coworkers ordered different pizzas and had a great meal as well. However, they offer a lot more than pizza. They have a lunch deal called mangia mangia where you can have as many entrees as you can eat (though you have to finish them before getting a new one) from a limited list. If you're hungry, that's the thing for you!

Probably fifteen years since my last visit but they did nor disappoint. Four adults and a three year old stopped for lunch after a visit to Steamtown. Mid-afternoon so not all menu options were available. The service and food were both as wonderful as I'd remembered. The three year old could have been happy with just the basket of delicious warm bread from the wood fired oven but enjoyed his home made pasta, too. The adults all were pleased with the freshness and flavor of the salad, bread and pasta. Good food, drinks, and service at a reasonable price.

I have lived in the Scranton area for nine years and wanted to go to this place many times. I wanted a woodfired oven pizza. The service was extremely fine and friendly. I had' the biggie' pizza and a house salad. It was Crisp and fresh with their homemade Italian Caesar dressing. Sadly overdressed but a good salad. The pizza was delicious with lots of the stated ingredients and tons of scrutiny mozzarella. But what I don't get about East Coast pizzas is why the center few inches is soaking wet and falling apart. The rest of the crust from about 4 inches out from the center was wonderful and chewy. But I had to scoop up the center and eat it with my fork. I would definitely go back again and try their other Italian specialties.

I order from this restaurant fairly often because my friends like it but I'm usually pretty underwhelmed by the food here. Salads are made with wilted lettuce.. I've gotten a turkey club with turkey that looked like it had gone bad.. and countless other experiences where the food was sub par. The only good thing that comes out of La Trattoria is their pasta. Their homemade pasta and marinara sauce is actually really good. It's literally the only enjoyable meal I've gotten from this place.

A family-owned staple in Scranton. I ate here frequently from a young age until I went away to school. The bread is the best you'll find anywhere in Scranton. The pasta sauce in my experience has varied in quality, but, on an average visit, is good. If it's not enough, they'll give you another serving for free. That's a real family restaurant. The wood-fired pizza is the real gem here. It became a menu option maybe six years ago and is unmatched. Really, really delicious with a liberal application of toppings.

Like coming home again. We had a wonderful experience, great food, great service and very reasonable. Portions are very generous, just finished left overs tonight. The aroma from the wood fired oven and garlic rolls with herbed butter is awesome. Home made pasta, great seasoning, and fresh seafood. Looking forward to coming back.

La Trattoria has been around for many years. Over two decades I would say. I have been there a handful of times and I would say it doesn't even come close to the top tier of Italian restaurants I would choose in Scranton. The marinara sauces is very sub-par. Their bread is freshly made in a brick over and is fantastic but that is really all this restaurant has going for them. I was there a few weeks ago and left very disappointed.

Just got home from lunch & I may not have to eat again for a week. I had heard about their "Mangia Mangia" lunch, but never had the opportunity to try it (it runs 11-1:30). I was beyond pleased & will return again, & again. Having eaten there before, I was familiar with the bread---I want to take the baker/chef home with me. I didn't know if it was included w/the special, but I was willing to pay extra for it. The "Mangia Mangia" lunch is your choice of 5 entrees, one at a time (if you can manage to eat them all) soup, small salad & dessert--for a very reasonable price. The Stracciatella soup was excellent, although I do prefer Asiago instead of Parmesan. It was velvety & flavorful, especially when paired with the wheat bread. The list of entrees changes monthly, today I chose the Chicken Marsala & Risotto w/mushrooms. My only critique would be the pairing of the Marsala w/a red sauce side. Ideally, I'd have preferred the pasta covered w/the Marsala sauce. The chicken was tender & tasty, the sauce thick & wonderful. The Risotto was an excellent pairing of cheesy (but not too cheesy) risotto & an abundance of sauteed mushrooms. My companion had the Rollatini & I thought I would like to try it (as she had been making mmmmm & nomnom sounds throughout her meal) but I knew I would not be able to stuff it in. Our very pleasant & attentive server had noticed my perhaps interest in another entree (a spicy penne) and suggested it as my 3rd entree. I will have to return for that. The dessert selections w/the special are the usual ice cream, brownie, or rice pudding. However, if you want something different there are a myriad of Italian specialties on the main menu, all wonderful; especially the cannoli--I'd leave an arsenal for the cannoli. I've read all the negatives people have posted here & wonder whether we've been to the same restaurant.

Service and quality has really gone severely down hill over the last several years. Rude and disrespectful to customers. Sending out coupons in email and not honoring them. With Scranton having SO many fantastic Italian resturants, go somewhere else. You will get a better meal at Olive Garden.

So disappointed today. LaTrattoria is our favorite Italian restaurant in downtown Scranton. Love their HUGE antipasti and was really looking forward to it. Got there along with another couple at 1:30 on a Sunday and they were CLOSED even though their website said they'd be open at 1:00! So disappointed. Ended up going to Traxx at the Lackawanna Station Radisson and had a delicious lunch. Not well done, LaTrattoria. Change your website, please.

Save your money.. Go to a place that cares about the customers. During our recent experience here we were treated rudely, not to mention a 30 minute wait and we had reservations!! While waiting at the bar, the bartender obviously had never bartended before and she could not of been more unfriendly. When we finally got our table, our waitress was also unfriendly, our food was late and then served cold. We asked the waitress if the manager was in but she said she quit ( who would blame her!) but that the owner was in that night. We asked to talk to him, but he sat at the bar and never came over . Customers want a pleasant dining experience for their hard earned money...you won't find it here ...Bad business

I recently had a fine meal at La Trattoria. Walked in with a party of six about an hour from closing, no problem whatsoever. The service was friendly and prompt. The food arrived in a timely manner, and the bread (mentioned in several other reviews) was pretty tasty. My salad was okay, nothing special. The meals were cooked well, nobody had any complaints, some pretty good standard Italian-American fare. If you put me in a corner and made me come up with a criticism I would mention the lack of seasoning. I had a bit of everything and the one common thread I would say is that they need to find the salt and pepper in the kitchen. Maybe I'm just a bit nutty about this, though, as nobody else with me noticed it like I did. I would absolutely go back again for another try at the menu. It was, on the whole, a very good experience and I'd like to see what else the restaurant has to offer.

As a southern boy, you can't get pizza like this in my town. I can only speak to the Pizza, but it impressed myself and one other southerner. I agree, we probably wouldn't know good pizza if it hit us in the head, but we enjoyed it. I tried the White Pizza for two ($9) and was impressed. I took some it home to Virginia to let my wife enjoy it and she liked it too. My friend got "The Biggie", who hates all things northern, actually liked the pizza! ha For a bunch of out-of-town Southern boys, we liked La Trattoria. I would go back again.

A great family-owned scranton restaurant. The wine is very cheap compared to other restaurants and I always like the staff. Their pasta is homemade and very good. I would recommend the Fusilli w/Gorgonzola cream sauce. They have great little rolls that are baked in their stone oven. The last time I went I took a group of 11 and they were very accomdating, letting us eat the large portions family style and entire bill (8 adults, 3 children, only 2 people drinking) was about 180 including the tip.

La Trattoria used to be one of my absolute favorite places. I chose La Trattoria (out of all the lovely places in our area) for every graduation dinner EVER. In fact, until a year ago, it was a frequent haunt for my boyfriend and me. I loved everything from the crispy outside/airy inside artisan bread to the amazing, rich, well-crafted entrees. We literally drove there when the bridge was closed for half a year ... meaning, we had to drive THROUGH SOUTH SIDE SCRANTON just to get there (at risk of our car, possessions, and life. LOL!) Sadly, I have watched La Trattoria plunge into a spiral of uncaring staff/chefs, greasy fare, and depressing atmosphere. We swore-off La Trattoria three months ago, after more "bad" experiences then it is possible to recount.. After countless piles of greasy pasta dishes (where there would be a literal sheen of grease on the food and a pooling of grease around the edges), after limp rolls, after tasteless/super greasy appetizers, we became disheartened. But, our passion for this restaurant was so strong that still visited in HOPE of some sort of improvement. Nonetheless, on our last visit, I asked the server to hold the onions on the penne ala vodka. I had made this request for YEARS and they has always accommodated me for YEARS. She pointedly said, "No." I laughed and said, "No?" And, she sternly said that wasn't possible. I quickly explained that I have had this request fulfilled for over ten years. And, she simply replied, "It cannot be done." I was told that all entrees were "as is." I was too flabbergasted by this woman's curtness and sour-expression to stand up and leave. So, I ordered a panini (and my boyfriend also skipped the pasta for the same reason) just get get her away from our table. When she returned with our sandwiches (at a pasta house), she dropped them just a little too hard on the table (the panini actually bounced) and walked away. Accompanying this tasteless, greasy panini was a visually repellent, cold green pasta salad. No words.I would not even dream of putting a fork in that mess. And, as one can imagine, our server never check-in, she merely brought a bill. Not only was the fare greasy, tasteless, and inedible, but the waitstaff was so impossibly rude that we vowed never, ever to return. We have remained true to that. I would say that if you have not visited La Trattoria in the last year (since the bridge fiasco), you will be shocked at the callousness of the staff (they have clearly "given up") and quality of food. Since our La Trattoria embargo, we have found a few really nice pasta dishes elsewhere. Right now, my favorite penne ala vodka is at The Cafe in Plains. And the waitstaff could not be MORE AMAZING! Try them for a tastier, friendlier, more professional experience.

La Trattoria is just average. I went with a large group and while the waitstaff was extremely friendly, the food was not up to par with other Italian restaurants in the area.

Our food here was really terrible. We were lured in by the allure of a free birthday meal. Big mistake. The place was decorated with tacky decor with lots of artificial flowers. I ordered the Bolognese with Meatballs and my wife ordered a combination of Italian dishes. Sadly, the best part of the dinner was the rolls. The Bolognese was bland & flavorless with pools of oil & grease at the bottom. My wife's Pomodoro sauce tasted slightly better but the other samples were again riddled with copious amounts of oil and minimally seasoned. I would give a 1 star rating if not for the rolls & friendly service.

I'm surprised by the bad reviews for here. This was my go to Italian place when I lived here and I seriously ordered the same thing every time. Always had to have the pizza skins for an app which is a little pizza with potato, cheese and bacon and sour cream on top, so amazing. The rolls they bring with the homemade garlic butter with herbs is so good too! I always had the tortellini verdi alla trattoria which was cheese filled tortellini served in a cream sauce with peas and prosciutto. I had it the first time and ordered it every time after. The service was sometimes hit or miss but the food never suffered. In March during a snow storm we ordered take out from here and was so surprised at how perfect everything was. All of the food was packaged separately and nothing was soggy or gross and everything was still piling hot. We were impressed.

Their Old World Lasagna is amazing. Their Alfredo sauce is gross. Overall I like the place, it's quaint. I'd say it's a hit or miss place, but I like it.

La Trattoria is a good spot for a meal if you're driving north on I-81. After you get past Scranton, you can try your luck in Binghamton (I wouldn't), Syracuse (it's getting late), or Watertown (abandon all hope). I continue to be amazed by the portion size at places like these. My orecchiette could have fed a hungry family from Brescia. The pasta may or may not have been "homemade," but it was cooked properly, and with a generous helping of escarole. A bit watery and not enough pepper, but really, I'm comparing this against the horror of the Allentown rest stop, where I earlier succumbed to Jolly Ranchers and corn nuts (after perusing a sea of fast slop options). The bartender was a nice guy. He couldn't understand that I wasn't a Phillies fan. Which I guess means it's a good local spot for families who have subscribed to the personality cult of crotch beard Jayson Werth. La Trattoria is a fine local, and more worth your time than the highly rated Thai place where I ate two years ago on a similar excursion.

This is a case when yelp really let me down. I had a terrible experience with this restaurant. My girlfriend and I called in an order from Latrattoria a couple weeks ago, and it was awful. When I opened the pizza box I noticed the crust was burnt to a crisp along with the whole bottom side. This did not pair well with the toppings that merely warm and hardly cooked. I was so hungry though I was able to take down one slice before I felt sick. That's not the worst part. My girlfriend was really wanting some spagetti and meatballs and what she received should never be sold by any self respecting establishment. When she opened hers, it looked like the dish had been sitting on a buffet line for hours. She decided to give part of the dish a chance, which turned out to be a terrible decision. She was sick for 2 days. 0 stars. Plain and simple.

Took a group of 10 people at the last minute and it was no problem getting good service. Everyone seemed happy with their meals, even the picky eaters. I would go back because no one had complaints and that is hard to say when you have 10 people!

With a current rating of 4-1/2 stars I thought that I was in for a treat. I travel frequently and am burned out on chain restaurants so I love yelp for finding local flavor. This place was not good. I had the cliche chicken parmigiana (I know, I know) and it was two rectangle deep fried pieces of blandness. I make this at home: fresh chicken, breadcrumbs, oil, pan and medium heat... amazing. How freakin' lazy that a restaurant doesn't make it fresh. The sauce was so out-of-the-can I could actually taste the metal. As for the "basket of rolls" mentioned. Cold and yucky. sliced pizza crust with extra seasoning. Entree w/salad and a Beam on the rocks $18.50

If you are ever in Scranton, go have a meal at Latrattoria. The pasta was not disappointing although it came in HUGE bowls (as in too much food) The staff is nice, friendly and fast, the cocktails are well mixed and not watery and the dishes we had were really good. If I'm ever in Scranton again, I wouldn't hesitate to visit them again.

I went here with my friend once about 4 months ago and had a very sub-par meal, so we decided to try it again recently. My father is from Italy and I grew up eatting good sicilian food so I know a little bit about this. This was far from anything good both times we have visited this resturant. I found it strange that they put the "special board" in front of your table in smeared dry erase marker rather than having your serve explain the dishes. The first time I had the special, the Polenta Board. Everything about it was strange. It was served on a huge wood board. Itc contained very loose, cold, unseasoned polenta served with cold meatballs and cold slices of sausage. My date had the seafood ravioli which seemed to come out of a package and tasted fishy. The seafood vodka sauce it came in was rather tasteless and looked like paste. We got the tomato and mozzarella appetizer that was decent, but the mozzarella was of low quality, tasteless, and tough. The second time we went I got the Stracciatella which tasted like metal and eggs. My friend got the Pizza Skins which he said were pretty good. I also ordered the Chicken Nicholas and my friend got the Chicken Jamie. My date felt that nothing in his meal seemed fresh and that the risotto was gummy. My Chicken Nicholas was okay, but the chicken was very rubbery in texture, and the white wine sauce had a strange consistency. The one thing I will say is that the coffee is very good, and the service is very good as well.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
