I can't believe they only have 3 stars. I've been here alot but this is the first time in a while since I moved away. Prices are good. Food is great. Staff is friendly. Everytime I've been there Jimmy Kramer was there. My favorites are their "famous" wings, crab cakes, and the frozen chocolate pretzel pie. There's always something creative and different on their menu. The ambience is perfect. Its casual yet romantic. The bar area can be fun too! Make sure to throw your peanut shells on the floor!

Love this place! The atmosphere is classic. Hot lager shrimp are always fresh. The best wings around...small but perfectly crisp and excellent flavor. Seafood dishes are excellent...try the crab cakes or the flounder. Wiener schnitzel is also very good. Desserts are great but I never have room. Drinks are also yummy!

I like the Peanut Bar. I'm glad that a few places like this still exist. It's my belief that the corporate weenies who created the sterile TG McFunster restaurants based their original concept around places like this. Casual dining in a fun atmosphere with decent food. If you've never been to the Peanut Bar I say you have to check it out. It's worth seeing at least once and deciding for yourself if you like it. TV foodie fans, note that the chef is Andrea Heinly of Hell's Kitchen fame.

Went with a group from work. The food was very well done, and presentation was top notch. Only issues during the meal was shoddy service(she looked like she was having a bad day), and the drinks are very very expensive.

Peanuts was easy to find. And convenient. Upon entering the hostess didn't say hello, smile or make eye contact as she rushed us to our seat. We were seated in a high traffic area between the bar and the nicer, calmer, more attractive section of the restaurant. I wish I'd dined in that area. The hostess was rushing around, bumping into our table etc. Our waitress was perfectly nice, but not knowledgeable about the menu. When I asked about their craft beer selection she didn't know what "craft beer" was. Disappointing selection- I had assumed there would be more considering the large display for Great Lakes Brewing Co. The waitress was also forgetful- missing a few items we ordered and not checking in with us. The burger was absolutely delicious. No complaints there. The food was great but the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. Overall, it was a convenient meal before our show at the Sovereign Performing Arts Center.

If you are looking for wings this is the place to go. Make sure you get them buffalo style. Don't fill up on the peanuts that they give you, you can throw your shells on the floor. The rest of the food is good, I don't think there is anything that had that "wow" factor. I would go back for the wings.

I had the Buffalo Chicken Cheese-steak and was pleasantly surprised. The sandwich was big enough, the fries were crispy and not greasy. Seating was a little bit tight, but it's to be expected considering the size of the place. Attended parking behind the establishment was a nice perk as well.

Okay, I was warned by the previous reviews, but I went anyway. This place would be a complete ng except everyone is sooo nice. Customers, waiters, bartenders, everyone. The food isn't bad, exactly, just not overly good. Peanut shells on the floor should say it all. Like em? Go. Otherwise...

Ideal dining experience. Had the talapia with a light breading. The waiter was very attentive and the bartender was charming. I would return for dinner or just drinks ANYTIME.

Sometimes people who visit Reading only remember the Pagoda and the Peanut Bar. With a storied history dating back to Prohibition, the dark vintage space has long been a local institution. Five Guys has free peanuts, but this place has been doing it for ages. Now it is time for some vintage cocktails, a trend Reading has not experienced. It could be done very well here, because the bartenders are skilled, and it is the perfect authentic atmosphere for it. (See menu from the Bookstore Speakeasy in Bethlehem.) Peter is particularly good with the Manhattans. Their new logo wine glasses are certainly nice and only $4 if you want to buy one. Not sure if there is a happy hour. I expected the wines by the glass to be better. They do a good job with the beer selection. I used to be able to get great veg entrees here such as meatloaf and a really good homemade veggie burger (has cheese in it though). There is a new chef from a cooking show competition, so I am hoping she will consider alternative diets and add a few savory vegan dishes -- or at least some soups made with veggie broth instead of chicken. There is still Taste of the Middle East, an all vegan appetizer. I used to love their desserts too and would sob with gratitude to see a vegan choice or two, since no one else really does this in town but Good Eatz. I will definitely change my rating if I can find more to eat. They do a good job at marking gluten-free entrees. If the Sovereign Center is having an event, you won't be able to find a seat. They often have free acts during JazzFest, but it gets packed. Be sure to join the Birthday Club, for a free drink, picture, gift, coupons, and your name on the board. I cannot believe they still do this, so cool. There are tvs, but they have the great sense to fill them with a fascinating slide show of old Reading and Peanut Bar history. If you are coming from out of town, there is a parking lot in back with a guard, so don't fear. And don't be put off by the nasty billboards someone with a lot of disposable income has anonymously placed around our city, touting the rich and ridiculing the poor, very bad taste to see this in the country's poorest city. The quotes were initially mistakenly attributed to Abraham Lincoln and had to have his name blacked out after the error was made!

They have peanuts. You can throw the shells on the floor. Yep, they were featured on some TV show about unique restaurants. The food is simply average, at best. I had the crabocado salad. The crab cake was obviously filled with some lesser fish and had a fishy smell to it. There were maybe four, very thin slices of avocado which were not fresh and inedible. Decent atmosphere and good beer selection. Maybe the burgers are good? I won't be back.

We were to sit at bar for cocktials and saw a "bug" run across bar to the underneath area, we moved down but should have left These bugs are not what any restaurant should have let especially when they are open!!!!! Nothing great about the food either dont know why they are busy

Went there yesterday for wings and a burger...both were really good. Wings are good but are not the best in the world. If there is a local bar around you and you love their wings...that is how I would describe this place. This is a place where the locals would defend their wings but nationally the place wouldn't win. Wings are a bit expensive for a dozen...10 bucks. There is limited choice in sauces...there is only buffalo and garlic and herb. I tried both and the garlic and herb are really good. You can tell that this is a homemade sauce. Waiter was really nice and you can tell that he took pride in his job...that's rare. If you are hungry and want some good pub food this is the place...

  • J P.

Great wings - maybe some of the best I've ever had. They have hot wings and garlic herb - both were delicious. We started with the breaded cheeseball appetizer and they were very good as well, nothing like the mini mozzarella sticks we had expected. Their famous "pretzel ice cream pie" was not great unfortunately - but the rest of the food was certainly good enough to warrant a return visit (or two or three!)

If you are in Reading, you must try this dining landmark! Even better than the food is the history of this place, coupled with the fact that you are encouraged to be messy! Throw the shells of your complimentary peanuts on the floor as you read the story behind this institution. The menu seems to be progressing, yet one can still enjoy a good 'ol fashion grilled cheese.

Things to love about the Peanut Bar include; 1. all the shells of the peanuts that you eat are thrown on the floor. 2. great selection of imported beers on tap. 3. nostalgic decor. 4. the delicious chicken wings. 4.free parking. 5.Conshohocken bread is used for the sandwiches. I did have a Tappas special once, and I was not a fan of it. I would just order off of the regular menu. The Peanut bar is a great place to go to after you see a flick at the nearby theater.

I really want to like this place as I am huge proponent of supporting urban business and this is a slice of my childhood. But I have given it several shots recently and I just can't give it more than 2 stars. The food is expensive and average at best. Everything seems massed produced, frozen, and reheated. sorry...

This place is old school-- from the dim interior to the peanut shells all over the floor. It's nice to be in a place like this and be able to breathe easily-- I imagine before the smoking ban there wasn't really a no-smoking section because it's a really open floor plan of a bunch of rambing rooms. The menu here is pretty standard with good, fresh seafood. I've had the AYCE shrimp special, going back between the 4 choices of preparation style with the steaming in Yuengling Lager and Old Bay the best by far. The one area I think they could improve upon, and I'm guessing they don't really care about it, is the presentation. The dipping sauces come out in plastic shot glasses and they use what is probably the cheapest cutlery available at the restaurant supply. The food is excellent but it looks kinda slapped on the plate half-@ssedly. It's a thing with me. Still, it's a cool place to spend an evening. The prices are reasonable.

  • Jeff H.

It's the Peanut Bar... there are peanut shells on the floor. If you're grossed out or bothered by that kind of thing it's not the best place to go. Personally I feel kinda weird throwing shells on the floor but I don't find it detracts from the experience. I wouldn't wear anything open-toed. Good selection of beers, decent burgers, and the last time I had the calamari they were nicely fried though the dipping sauce was too salty. Nothing really amazing but it's a safe bet, reasonably priced, and for the parallel parking impaired they have a private lot behind the restaurant. Service can sometimes be slow but this seems to be a bigger problem when it's dead rather than when it's busy.

The score is really 3.5. There are some really solid dishes and others are just ok. I recommend the frozen pretzel pie for dessert. Delicious!

This place is so local, almost to the point of being depressing. The bartender has likely been there as long as the peanuts on the floor. While the peanuts are a nice novelty they do not give this place nearly enough charm to make it tolerable. The place is first and foremost a bar and the drinks are certainly priced well for where I come from however by Reading standards they are nothing to write come about and while they do have good beer (I had a Franziskhaner) it was not exactly cheap (~4/pint), though the bartender does pour a nice pint. The Peanut also serves food; I ordered the roast beef sandwich, which the bartenders compared favorably to Katz's in New York. While having high aspirations is admirable false advertisements are not. The roast beef sandwich was mediocre at best. In fact, I could make a better sandwich with store bought cold cuts. While The Peanut has the charm of being over 100 years old overall it just a depressing reminder of the realities of this area of the country.

Sadly, used to be way better. Then the owner cheated on his wife (who was also a co-owner and the chef). She took everything worthwhile across the street to Judy's. But ah, we used to go there every week when I was growing up. I still miss the wings.

This was a place my parents used to visit when they made trips to Pennsylvania and my dad took me here to relive some memories. The Peanut Bar is essentially par and that's only because the service was friendly and the food wasn't anything special. Everyone gets free peanuts but unlike Five Guys, the shells are all over the floor. Recommended for the fish and beer selection. Otherwise, it's average.

  • Vanessa W.

A fun family-friendly place, this is a Reading area institution. The official home of the Reading Phillies, you can actually eat peanuts and throw the shells on the floor. (That's the real reason to eat here.) Standard American food, which is average.

We walked in from the windy cold of Reading PA to find a warm and welcoming atmosphere inside the Peanut Bar. The first thing you'll notice is that you're walking on peanut shells that are tossed on the floor. When your seated at your table you are given a bowl of salted peanuts in the shell and they let you know that you can just toss them on the floor. So if you've always wanted to make a mess of your dining room this may be the place for you. The food was good but not outstanding. The chicken wings seemed to be the best thing that we ordered, but our waitress let us know that we were missing out because the crab cakes are supposed to be the best in the state. Maybe next time. Have Fun.

I rolled into Reading about 4 PM yesterday and was at the Peanut Bar by five. Reading is an interesting dichotomy with a very affluent section and the other parts about as bad as an inner city can get. The Peanut Bar sits somewhere in between. It's a third generation establishment run by a nice enough guy, Michael. His grandfather opened the spot about 80+ years ago. I was stopping by to visit my college buddy Todd who has lived here for the past 18 mos. and managed this place since he arrived. Props' must be paid to the bartender who has been here for 20+ years, Pete Johnson. He is absolutely Dan Ackroyd reincarnated and has awesome stories like most great bartenders should. He's also an interesting cat with hosting his own local book show. He is certainly in the top class of bartenders. I met up with Shooky and Ray and Todd and myself all sat down at a table. Okay,,,, the peanuts. I really don't care for all the peanut shells that are on the floor. I mean I guess I can see why people like to throw them on the ground, but to me it just seems unsanitary. Especially, when I believe they only clean them up once a week. This place is a good family joint as was evidenced by the brisk business being done on a Friday night. I chose not to get too adventorous with my order and stuck with the house burger. It was served with gouda cheese and bacon. Overall a very fine burger. I ordered it medium and while it was a bit overcooked it still was delicious. I'd guess they don't chop the meat on site, but it still did not taste like it was frozen prior. The chicken wings were really good. They came swimming a bowl of sauce and were very plump and delicious. It was a nice touch to have the rolls lightly buttered and salted and served warm. Todd got the softshell crabs, which I considered ordering, but having had them just a day or two ago chose not too. I did sample them and they were quite good. My fries were a little burnt, but that's the way I like them. I will definitely visit this place again on my next visit. I just wish they would clean up those damm peanut shells, but then I'd gus they'd need to change the name.

It's hard for me to imagine anyone not giving Peanut Bar five stars, but, then again, the reality is... in Berks County... people love huge, cheap, all-you-can-eat buffets full of nasty, oily food. So... if a restaurant gets a mediocre or low rating, you might actually wonder if it's good. The Peanut Bar has been passed lovingly from generation to generation, and the food has remained excellent. It seems like every night that I go there, Michael is still on premises. Why? Because the restaurant is his baby, and he cares about his customers, who have been incredibly loyal down the years. A BIG TIP: Don't order off of the laminated menu. The dishes are mostly boring. Order the specials. They're always amazing. I HIGHLY recommend that you order fish dishes. PB does fish better than any other restaurant in Berks County (including Go Fish, which has the word "fish" in the name!) Don't be fooled by the time-worn interior, the plastic tablecloths, the jukebox, and the peanut shells. Peanut Bar is the REAL DEAL... one of the few areas restaurants that holds up well against any big city equivalent.

Good atmosphere with peanuts on the floor and an old style bar. They used to have more vegetarian options, but the choices now are not nearly as good as before. Even the hummus on the Mediterranean plate was below expectations.

Stopped by with a local friend who made the recommendation. Was definitely worth it. We split a side of crispy wings (compete with hot sauce and all), some cheese balls and a huge bowl of mussels in a hit marinara sauce. Was very good..

Great date night restaurant! Not too crowded or noisy. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. Food was delicious, we had the soft shell crap and the chicken parm and we're both very pleased and full. Wish the peanuts were salted, but they were still very good anyways! Will certainly be back!

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. I really liked the ambience. Reminded me of an old style New York City bar and grill. I ordered the cheese balls appetizer. They were good but not great. My entree was weiner schnitzel. It was a generous portion but I felt that the veal was deep fried a little too long.

Were at The Peanut Bar yesterday (7/10/15), I tried the Handmade cheese balls and all the reviews I read about them were right!!! As soon as you bite them the cheese just melt in your mouth, really good, try them! We also try an order of wings (buffalo) and they were also really good!! We couldn't leave without the Creamy crab dip. I had 3 mox drinks: Hurricane-lil strong for my taste, The Cherry Press-liked it, the word say it it taste like cherries, and I tried the Malibu D and it was kinda different than then first time i had it but i guess its because it was a different bartender, it was still good. I will add a picture of the cheese balls, so far hadn't have something that im disappointed with.

The Peanut Bar is a pretty neat place. The floor is covered with peanut shells but that is part of the experience! It has a loud atmosphere. I came in for dinner to watch a jazzfest show. It has decent viewing for live music. The food was decent, not memorable. This place is more for the experience. There is parking in the back.

Stopped in for just a quick drink and to enjoy the standard laid back vibe PB offer. Great peanuts and a decent tap selection. Bar tender is entertaining as always on a Sturday and it was a great break from the cold in January.

There was a glorious period when every trip to the Peanut Bar was an experience in its own. Now, though, while the dishes remain inspired, the quality varies wildly visit to visit. One night the steak may be cooked perfectly, the next it could be bland and cooked a few temperatures off (asked for medium rare? You may get it medium well). The ambiance is still one of a kind, and the owner will be quick to mention this establishment was once featured on the Travel Channel. For locals, it's worth stopping in every few months. For locals bringing guests from out of town, it's still one of the first restaurants that comes to mind if you want to treat them to a memorable evening. Aside from the inconsistency of the quality of food, you'll find standard pub fare along with regional classics. Fish and chips? Check. Meatloaf? Check. A delectable assortment of sandwiches, from the Reuben to the humble Club? Check. Some must-have treats are the signature cheese balls and wings. To this day, I still haven't tasted a Buffalo sauce that can come close to what the Peanut Bar can offer. Mind you, they don't have a WIDE variety of wing sauces, but the default sauce is one of a kind. Stop in for the gimmick of being able to toss peanut shells whimsically on the floor, stay for the cheese balls and wings. Bash the unpredictability of the entrees all you want, but trust me, you can't go wrong with these two starters.

Absolutely fantastic! A diamond in the heart of Reading. The food is great. We had the cheeseballs, yes they're wonderful and unique. Then the Chesapeake burger topped with crabmeat and the flat iron steak sandwich on garlic bread. The deserts and beer list is excellent as well. The owner came over and chatted us up. He gave us a very warm feeling.

Dropped in for wing night. Still family owned, still free peanuts, still a.u.c.e. specials,3 days a week. Wings were not how I remembered but the sauce's were a great compliment to the wings. Lastly, can still order a beer on tap,in a 32 oz fishbowl.

Average over-priced food. WORST OWNER!!! I went to dinner with my wife here again -- we have been regular customers -- and saw him blatantly mistreat his employees yet again! He talked very loudly and rudely to them in a condescending manner and of course turned around with a big smile to our table. There are mice and roaches. This would be a much better place if someone who understood restaurant management were in charge. As it stands, we won't be returning unless this place is under new ownership. My wife and I both feel uncomfortable supporting a business that treats its employees like second class citizens. Of note, our servers, of which we've had many, have generally been great. Take your date night out and pre-theatre dining elsewhere.

A truly unique experience dining here! A fun and interesting place with good food! Cheese balls are BANGIN !!!!!!! Never had better ones!!!! My Old Bay burger topped with crabmeat was delicious. The fries are fresh--not frozen. Homemade desserts are great. Make sure to use the restaurant parking lot around the corner if you go. One small negative--bathrooms greatly needed attention.

I have been here several times over about 35 years. It's had its ups and downs. This last time was definitely an up. Saturday lunch must be a rare event in Reading, thankfully the Peanut Bar was open and serving. They've always been reliable that way. I wasn't too thrilled due to my last experience, but sometimes you're just hungry. If you've never been there, it's dark just like a bar should be, even in the middle of the day. The floors are covered my peanut shells. It has an old-timey German feel with an assortment of "characters". The menu is the standard American. They have evolved though with a good assortment of craft brews and several gluten free specials. I had the seared grouper with corn salsa, broccoli and mashed. It was artfully plated and really delicious, especially loved the salsa. It came with a salad and for $11.95 quite the bargain. My partner had the french dip, a long roll filled with thinly sliced, tender fat free beef and the usual fixings. He barely said a word while inhaling it. Yes, it was delicious. We had dessert because I had to try the award winning pretzel ice cream pie. It was pretty good, we did eat it all, but once was enough for me. He also had the creme brulee, liked it, but it was in a smaller, deeper ramekin than we usually see. I'll be looking forward to my next visit.

We haven't been to the Peanut bar for a while. Always like the atmosphere and the fact that it has parking. Food over the past few times we've been there hasn't been that good. Last night were going out for a bite to eat and forgot about the concert. We eventually wound up at the Peanut bar because, well, I'm really not sure. Anyway, I ordered a franciskaner wheat beer. I know my spelling isn't right. It came out in a chilled liter glass with a slice of lemon, fantastic. I was so good it tasted like another one!!!! We had the wings for an appetizer. They are a peanut bar classic. Compared to how they used to serve them in a bowl dripping in sauce, they are much better now. They serve them in a nice divided dish with celery and blue cheese dressing. This way you can pretend that you aren't trying to sop up every drop of the buttery hot sauce. I had the broiled seafood platter (trying to watch my calories after the wings) and my wife had the scallops. I am very fussy about how my seafood is cooked and this was spot on. Just cooked perfectly, nice and moist. Previously, I've had this and the seafood was dry and rubbery, but congratulations it was perfect. My wife's scallops were also cooked exactly correct. The tendency is to make them dry (I'm glad they resisted the dutchy taste preference which is cooked to death). Almost forgot, the fish was extremely fresh. No spoiled fish taste of ammonia and chlorox anywhere. Just good flavor. After having saved some calories on the broiled seafood platter, we ordered dessert. The warm apple crisp was delicious with salted caramel ice cream. Nice and fresh and piping hot. It seemed as if if just came out of the oven. Perfect ending. The service was great throughout the meal. All I want to say is congratulations to the peanut bar for a great meal. I'm excited to put it back on my list of go to places in Berks. It is truly a a great atmosphere and extremely cozy. Previously that atmosphere was all it was, but with food like that it is a fantastic experience. I have no idea why anyone would go to some disgusting chain restaurant where high school kids warm up prepackaged processed food and serve it as if it were hand crafted, when places like the Peanut Bar are around.

Great place! Super amazing fried cheese balls! I had the chef salad. Delicious! Nice clean restaurant, nice atmosphere. Decorated very nice. Peanuts as you are seated is cute touch, just throw your shells on the ground. Great experience. No complaints.

Nice place in the Reading area. Went there in May and when I walked in, they thought I was a married man (ha!) Had a burger and a beer and it was delicious! Not too busy that night which is always a plus since you could hear each other talk. The floors are covered in peanut shells. WARNING: if you are not used to slippery floors, this place isn't for you. I nearly tripped 5 times AND was SOBER! Imagine if I had a few to drink.... Overall, I do recommend.

My coworker used to work here and recommended tge place so my husband and I decided to try the place... Over all... This place was pretty good. They offered excellent service and good food. We had the steamed mussels, Buffalo wings, crab cake dinner and stuffed flounder dinner. I would recommend all of the above. Ordering the famous frozen chocolate covered pretzel pie now. And yes... I would come back.
