This place has a counter which is cool because this market is so packed it's scarce eating areas. Everything was fresh and the place looks really clean. You can see everything here. I had a wonton soup and triple mix extra spicy. It was made really quickly and right in front of me. The order taker was pretty friendly and even gave me extra spicy sauce on the side. I would definitely return for a meal here.

We were visiting Philadelphia and decided to eat at the Market. I was craving Chinese food and found this place. The lady taking the orders is extremely rude. She doesn't even knowledge you. I orders shrimp chowmein and I received 3 shrimps over rice. I politely went back and said I believe I got the wrong order. She said No you said chowmein and chowmein here is rice. I was so shocked. When is chowmein rice? I have been eating Chinese food for over 20 years and have never heard of that. She never apologized or asked to make the order correct. I wanted to place a 2nd order but with an attitude like that I was not going to give them my money.

Really great chinese lunch counter in the Reading Terminal Market. I had a delicious hot and sour soup and a couple of egg rolls. Fast friendly service. Reasonable prices, well worth a try. Highly recommend.

We ordered a set of fried dumplings made with chicken. They were reasonably priced and home made but they were not your usual pan fried dumplings as they were deep fried. The sauce had just the right bite of Chinese red vinegar. No tables here; just stools.

I'm super picky about Chinese food seeing as there's a place to get some on every single corner in Philly, but this is some of the best. I got the shrimp noodle soup and my cousin got the vegetable Lo mein. It was good. Like good good. Like can you guys come be my personal chefs good. The noodle soup came out nice and hot--not too hot, but hot enough that sitting by the door didn't make your soup into a cold veggie juice. It wasn't too salty which is greatly appreciated for someone who's thirsty all the time. It was a lot of soup for not a lot of money (which is also greatly appreciated). The workers are nice and brought out plenty of napkins along with all the sauces without you even asking. It's easy to catch a worker's attention. I feel like making my way down there right now! Easily a 5/5 if you're looking for something tasty, hearty and all the other positive -ly adverbs.

Very rude people that work there!! I ordered shrimp chicken w/ curry sauce and had a Giant hair in my food, I told the lady working the counter and she gave me a dirty look then didn't even say sorry or ask if I wanted anything else. I would NEVER RECOMMEND this place to anyone stay far away!! Bad bad bad

Just finished eating here and the food was fresh, good quality, and fast. My sister got the general tao's chicken and it had just the right amount of spice and crunch. I had the sesame chicken which was also good but I should have gotten something with more of a kick. $7-8 entrees for a good plateful of food. The chicken was all white meat which was a huge plus.

I was too pissed being here waited 15 min to order And the lady was so inpatient then I tried to order fried rice without pork or chicken. The lady told me she's not in the kitchen and it can't be made with out the meat. and I can go elsewhete that's exactly what we did I will never be back to this place the rudeness was not necessary

Fast service, freshly cooked, big portions, and good prices. And it's in Reading Terminal so the biggest problem is finding a place to sit. My Pork Lo Mein could have been a little more spicy, but everything tasted fresh. I didn't spend the next few hours thirsty the way I would have if there was too much salt or MSG. Shanghai was very good but with all the other choices it might be a while before I return.

This is the st Chinese food in the market. Ignore the place named after the color of a bowl and go directly to Shanghai. I have been coming here for years and have never had a bad meal. Superfast service with a smile and the prices are right on time. Look if a place is crowded its usually for good reason.

Shanghai Gourmet is my go-to for Chinese food at Reading Terminal Market! I usually end up getting sesame chicken every time, and every time I've been satisfied. It does tend to get a bit busy and hectic at times especially during the lunch hour but the lady who is usually at the counter is very efficient in making sure orders are prepared quickly in an effort to keep customers from waiting too long (seeing as many come in during their lunch break from work). Prices are reasonable too!

Nestled in Reading Terminal (RT), Shanghai Gourmet was recommended to my wife and me as the best Chinese place in R. Well since I haven't eaten at all of the Chinese places in RT I can't confirm it but it was good. I had the General Tso's chicken and enjoyed it though I felt it could have been spicier and the chicken itself didn't have that crispy crunch to it. But, I had no problem filling the tum tum and could have easily gone for more. Not that the serving was small but simply that it was good. My lovely bride had Chicken Mai Fun and enjoyed it too. Can't give you the details since I did not do a thank you bite A plus to Shanghai for me was brown rice was offered as an alternative to white for $1 extra. I wish many more places offered brown rice

There are so many businesses in the Reading Terminal it would probably take you 20 years to taste them all lol just kidding. I was originally brought to Shanghai by a friend and I ordered Shrimp & Brocolli in garlic sauce. It was so tasty and spicy I was begging for water. However, it didnt stop me from scarfing the food down. I was there yesterday again I just ordered Chinese veggies because I'm on a diet and these were awesome at well. Service is quick and staff is friendly. Average meal is $6.95

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
