I can preface this by saying Lo Spiedo was a huge leap from my comfort zone; admittedly, an evening out in the past was Olive Garden or a small BYOB in South Philly. I actually discovered Lo Spiedo through Yelp and decided the unique menu gave me a chance to explore something new. Seems I chose wisely, as I was very pleases with the quality and service at Lo Spiedo (once I found it, that is!). I was impressed with the friendliness of the hostesses and the entire wait staff. Again, because Lo Spiedo was a far cry from my usual dining adventures, I had plenty of questions about the menu. Our server was incredibly thorough and descriptive and made our experience that much easier. I'm still a bit unsure what Lo Spiedo's culinary influence is. I thought perhaps their inspiration came from the farm (items like spit roasted chicken, pork shoulder, roasted cabbage, etc), but their menu jumps around quite a bit (octopus, shrimp spiedini, rigatoni). There is so much diversity in what they offer, and I doubt anyone would be unable to find something unsuitable for their tastes. What stood out most was their ability to make seemingly easy dishes into masterpieces. Roasted cabbage with Gorgonzola cheese sounds about as easy as any dorm room dish, but 100 out of 100 times it wouldn't come close to Lo Spiedo's version. The other items we got were shrimp spiedini, brisket sandwich (served with fries and cole slaw), and rigatoni. I've always held the belief that fries can make or break a meal, and I'm a slaw snob. The fries made it, and the slaw definitely wasn't your wholesale bulk, mayonnaise-drenched, wimpy cabbage dish. I applaud their detail-oriented preparation of even the smallest dishes. As I stated above, I had trouble finding it. The Navy Yard is a bit confusing with their gating/security system. When I called, the hostess said I was about the 42nd person to call! I CANNOT stress enough to map out Lo Spiedo's location prior to departure. Overall great experience, and I will definitely consider going back; although sparingly, as their entire menu was a bit pricey! And hopefully they consider getting a new (and very big) sign!

Had a great time lady night (my first visit). This is what we ordered: - sardines - escarole salad - shrimp spiedini - brisket - octopus - whoopie pie I loved all but didn't really care for the escarole salad. I just felt there's not much taste in it like other dishes. Maybe it was meant to be a palate cleanser? For the sardines, I hope in the future they would offer the whole fish. Currently it's grilled, fillet then added to olives and sauce. Service was very good. I would absolutely go again.

Great location and really enjoyable menu. I'm a fan of dining outdoors and it provides just that with a great patio that gives a nice suburban feel amongst the Philly craziness.

Expected more from a Vetri restaurant. Was not "wowed" by any of the dishes. I felt the dishes needed more seasoning. Great: Spit Fired Vegetables- best dish of the night Beer Selection Parking Skillet Apple Pie and Nutella Dog Outdoor view Good: Spit Fired Octopus: Was good but similar to what I have had at other restaurants Mac and Cheese: Good but not unique Ricotta Artichoke with Focaccia: lacking seasoning and tasted more ricotta than artichokes Shrimp Spiedini: had a good taste but only three small shrimp Not so great: Wings- Was not a fan as I felt they were underseasoned. The yogurt dip they came with was too thick and you had to scoop it with a spoon to put it on a wing Chicken salad sandwich- Bread was way too hard and thick. Had to take off a piece in order to eat it. Chicken salad part tasted good but not great

Had dinner here with my wife. I got the chicken wings for an app. Very good. Had the brisket sandwich for my main course. It was just okay. My wife had the spit-roasted vegetables and the celery root sandwich. She loved them both. I had the apple pie a la mode for desert. The ice cream was better than the pie. I'll pass next time. The pour on the glass of wine seemed shorter than your average pour. We are planning a night out here with friends. This place needs another chance to let us enjoy the other menu items. Wait staff was very nice. Place is more casual than Osteria for sure. Great space and location.

Six of us ate here last night. We ordered a variety of main course dishes and sides which allowed for a huge shared meal. This place is full of good soul-satisfying food. The menu is set up for sharing. Pasta dishes are priced so that a table or 4 or 6 can order one as a side dish for everyone to enjoy. We ordered the reginette which was well complimented with a rich meat sauce reminiscent of the pastas at Osteria. The grilled octopus was excellent as were all of the meat dishes (especially the brisket). The cornbread with meat drippings may be the tastiest, moistest cornbread you'll ever have and is not to be missed. The farmhouse apple pie was the hit of the table from the dessert menu. Lo Spiedo is a great place for a dining adventure. Come with friends and try a bit of everything.

The pumpkin salad was outstanding. I am yet to taste such delicious flavors in a salad.

The building was the most interesting part of my visit. I liked the feel of the interior. It is a bit cramped inside, but it is inviting. The wait staff is attentive, but not overbearing. The food was nice, but nothing that really wowed us. I would say average at best. Things that were meant to be shared were tiny. More like an amuse bouche. The value for the money spent was poor. Very pricey. I cannot say that I would make a special trip to go here again. I do not think I would even go there before a show or sports event.

I went to this restaurant on the evening on 8/24/2015. The food was just OK. But the service was awful! We were a party of 8. We were seated relatively quickly but from there it was down hill. Took about 10-15 mins to get water, the at least 20 min. until someone came to take drink orders. Since it had taken at least 1/2 hr to get to this point we ordered drinks, apps and our meals all at once. Took about 20 min to get the apps. About 15 mins after getting the apps someone came to tell us that one is the entrees that 3 of us had ordered was no longer available - they had run out of it and this was a regular menu item and this was a Mon. nite. Finally after another 20 mins the entrees came out one by one. The final issue was when they brought the check. We told them up front that we needed individual checks yet after 2 hrs they presented us with one check for the table. That resulted in another delay. The entire time for our table was 2 1/2 hours meanwhile we watched tables come, be seated, served and leave. Would be never go back!

While staying in the Marriott courtyard in the Navy Yard we decided to stop here. The restaurant is modern and clean. Everyone is very nice. However our waitress took at least 20 minutes just to take our drink order and that was after waiting for our menus for an unreasonable amount of time. The food in a whole was subpar. We ordered calamari which was tasty but mostly batter. The calamari seemed to be MIA from the dish. We also asked for a beef tartare which was made with a low quality olive oil and had a strange taste. The tilefish was without taste so otherwise not worth mentioning. Very disappointing dinner to say the least.

Great food, ambiance and service... Great Service - Nice atmosphere at Bar and also a cool vibe at the upstairs dining area. A very talented and friendly Bartender - Anwar - the Milk Punch Cocktail is a must try. Food was delicious - the standouts for us were: Ricotta & Artichokes Focaccia, the 1/2 Chicken with lemon and olive oil and the Cast iron Apple Pie. There are many other interesting things on the menu which we cannot wait to go back and try. Finding the place was easy for us - get off 95 follow signs for the Navy Yard and the Restaurant is right at the entrance as you go through the security gate.

Another Vetri winner! The navy yard has a real gem in this new spot. We went this week for their opening and everything is amazing. As you would expect, their roast meats were perfect. You have to get the octopus, brisket, and pork shoulder. All were incredible but I give the slight nod to the pork shoulder. It was moist and flavorful with such a great crunchy skin. The biggest surprises probably come from the veggies. This spit roasted meat joint knows how to roast some amazing veggies. You have to eat the BBQ carrots and the cabbage with Gorgonzola. You will regret it if you don't. I can't wait to go back to try their sandwiches and pastas!

Cool watching the Navy ships docked. The stories they could tell if they could talk. Outdoor eatting. Cuban sandwich and the Octopus. My son and I loved it. The cool breeze. The cool view. And a modest $49 bill. Waiter was a cool guy too. Would be back. And VERY close to FDR park for a food break.

Everything was good, but pricey. Beef tartare appetizer was nice and flavorful. Be warned this is a one maybe two person appetizer. The octopus was delicious and perfectly cooked. A big, thick tentacle! Pork shoulder entree was okay. Nice smokey flavor. Entrees are expensive because are a la carte. Beets were decent. Mac and cheese was awesome. Get it. Our friends got the sandwiches which were well composed and flavorful. Sandwiches are a way better value. Our waitress was wonderful and knowledgeable. Overall, it was delicious, but pricey. If you decide to trek that far south of Philly, get a sandwich.

Best food I've had in a while. I've been raving about the brisket, the chicken starter, the pasta, the personal pan apple pie since we left. I expect that next time I go I will be able to give this place a "5 Star" rating. They had some service kinks that needed to be worked out. (The runners gave us the wrong dishes more than once.)

Lo Spiedo, located at the entrance to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, is one of my favorite new restaurants. This Marc Vetri eatery has a lot going for it - including free parking right in front. As soon as you walk in the front door, you are warmly greeted and that friendly vibe was present throughout my entire meal. There are two levels inside (cool atmosphere) and a spacious outdoor eating area in the warmer months. But lets get to the food..... For the most part I have a lot of positive to say about that. Living up to its name the items grilled over a fire pit like chicken wings or ribs are very tasty. The buttermilk parmesan dipping sauce which accompanied the wings however is something I would replace or try a new recipe. It has very little taste and adds absolutely nothing to the chicken. Polenta cornbread was excellent and I'm glad to see polenta so flavorful here as I was really disappointed with the polenta at one of Marc Vetri's other restaurants. The salads were mixed in quality. One of my dining companions loved her escarole salad but the daily special Melon Panzanello salad was just bland to the taste buds and the bread used as a base in this salad needed sawing to get it into smaller pieces so one could eat it. If I were the management of Lo Spiedo, I would never promote this as a special again. Now there's one item I left to the end that we ate which was totally addictive. That is the BBQ popcorn. I challenge anyone to not want to reorder this as soon as it is finished in prob under two minutes because no one at the table can stop eating it. A really flavorful and thirst quenching Deschutes Zarabanda beer was a perfect accompaniment on a warm summer evening. Our server Rob was excellent - personable, knowledgeable, and efficient. Everyone in my party left Lo Spiedo with a good taste in their mouth (maybe it was the popcorn!) and hoping to return again to this Navy Yard restaurant soon!

Great restaurant. Marc and Jeff, way to go! Food is outstanding, I've eaten here 20+ times and never had a bad meal. Try the wings, brisket or pork sandwich, or any of the main entrées, you will not be disappointed. And, BTW, the best hamburger you will find in Philadelphia, if that's what you feel like. Service is always great; knowledgeable and super friendly. If you are anywhere near the stadiums, give it try, you won't be disappointed.

Not impressed. Overpriced "craft beer", a pork chop that was 75% fat, and $32 later, I'm leaving hungry. If I wanted to lose weight is go to Weight Watchers...awful choices on menu...and isn't this supposed to be...Italian? Far from it. Footnote: in fairness, when I spoke with the manager, he was very nice about it and took care of the bill. He said if I told him sooner he would have offered something else. I believe in full disclosure, and hopefully, my experience isn't someone else's.

Not sure why this place is less than 4*, but I was frankly hovering between 4 and 5* myself! But then again, I realized it's because I compare it to all the other 5* Vetri joints. Not fair. When I stopped by for lunch - the food was well-executed and service (as always) was flawless. 5 stars. ------- Tuna Spiedini [$8] They've got several spiedini, or skewers. We started off with the tuna, which was served nicely rare within, with a light dressing that rendered a lusciousness to the moist fish. Chicken Thigh Spiedini [$4] Do get the the chicken thigh spiedini, which were juicy. The charred pieces were the best, with the added bonus of caramelized onions and crunchy bits of smoky bacon. Be sure to get a few orders because the low price point is certainly commensurate with the amount of chicken! Pumpkin Salad [$10] Pumpkin seed vinaigrette, aged goat cheese There was a pumpkin salad on offer when we went in January. The raw and thinly sliced pumpkin wasn't overly seasoned, but nicely dressed in vinaigrette. The much-needed punch of flavor came from the accents of aged goat cheese. Ricotta & Artichoke Grilled Focaccia [$6] The artichokes were an acidic foil for the creamy, luscious ricotta. A trio of grilled toast points offered a nice vessel to scoop it all up. Special Panini [$14] BBQ ribs, beer-battered onion rings There was a special that day, featuring sweet and smoky BBQ ribs - off the bone and piled high, with some crispy beer battered onion rings towering over it all. Now THAT's how you "crunchify" Bobby Flay! The accompanying french fries were thin, well-seasoned, and crisply fried. Chopped Pork Shoulder Sandwich [$12] French fries The pulled pork was moist, juicy, and had crisp bits studded throughout. The acidic bite of some vinegar helped to make each bite, with the crunch of the pickle offering even more balance to the meaty pork. Brisket Sandwich [$15] Horseradish, Italian coleslaw The heft of the moist, smoky brisket was balanced by the sharpness of the horseradish. The Italian coleslaw offered some texture to each bite. This was all house within some great bread - fresh, buttered, and well-toasted. Buccatini alla Gricia [$16] Guanciale, pecorino You can't go to a Vetri production without checking out some pasta. Guanciale was calling my name and I wasn't disappointed with its appearance in the buccatini. The pasta was nicely thick and cooked perfectly with some bite. Sans egg, lest we have a carbonara, the pasta still offered some richness with the addition of the pork jowl and the salty pecorino. 1/2 Chicken with Lemon & Olive Oil [$18] You've got to try some spit-roasted meat at a place called Lo Spiedo. The bird was crisply charred on the outside and perfectly seasoned with lemon and salt. The meat was juicy and moist. Chicken doesn't get much better than this. Simple seasoning and quality cooking. Cast Iron Skillet Mac & Cheese [$8] Mac & cheese is always a must order and this rendition was especially creamy and rich. The large macaroni noodles offered the perfect vessel for the cheese sauce, with a dusting of crispness up top. Whole Roasted Cabbage with Gorgonzola [$7] Do try the whole roasted cabbage. Yes, Lo Spiedo even spit roasts its veggies. The head of cabbage is roasted tender and layered into a cast iron skillet amidst the funk of gorgonzola. While each bite was screaming for some textural contrast, it was a welcome punch of flavor to accompany the spit-roasted meats on the menu. Birthday Peppermint Ice Cream We actually stopped by for my sister's b-day lunch and the kitchen was kind enough to send out some seasonal - at the time! - peppermint ice cream. Nutella Devil Dog [$6] We also opted for the nutella devil dog. Soft, creamy and light, this definitely echoed the dollar dogs from the candy aisle. Cast Iron Apple Pie [$10] Cinnamon semifreddo The cast iron apple pie offered a crust that was chewier than I would have expected, but I appreciated that the flavors weren't overly saccharine. The tender apples were accented nicely by the cinnamon, with an even brighter punch of favor from the cinnamon semifreddo. I loved the contrast in temp - nothing beats pie a la mode. Lo Spiedo is a different beast of a Vetri restaurant. It's definitely much more casual than Vetri, Osteria, and even Amis. But as Jeff Benjamin likes to say, casual doesn't mean service or the quality of each dish is compromised. Our server Jonathan was knowledgeable about each dish and service itself was flawless. The dishes were fairly straightforward, but that's not such a bad thing. Especially when the spit-roasted meats and sides are finger-licking good.

What an incredible restaurant. Best bolagnese ever! We also has the brisket and it was great. Folks around me had the dessert and they raved about it. It's a great spot for a wonderful casual meal with friends. It surely beats the competition around it

I just ate here for the first time recently and didn't have a dish that I didn't want more of. I ate here with two friends and we ordered a little of everything. We started with the parmigiano butter popcorn which was a great picky food. In addition, we tarted with the pumpkin salad which looked just as good as it tasted. It was delicious shaved pumpkin ribbons with a light dressing that really made it pop. We also ordered the artichoke and ricotta flatbread which I enjoyed, but felt it could have used less salt. The pasta course we orders was the reginette. I found it to be a very interesting dish. I believe there was saffron in it which punctuated the meat in a really nice way. Disclaimer: I'm a pasta fiend and am rarely surprised by flavors of sauce. Our entrees consisted of brisket which we ordered with a side of Mac and cheese and, at the recommendation of our server, the BBQ carrots. All of which was delicious. My favorite was the BBQ carrots. The brisket was very tender and well seasoned- which was everything I had wanted and the mac and cheese was so rich and creamy. Dessert was a warmed apple pie in a skillet with ice cream- obviously everything about that is amazing. Worth mentioning: I absolutely LOVE the milk punch cocktail here as well! It sounds weird but do yourself a favor and try it! Also, the service was very nice and helpful. There were some small glitches with forgetting a round of drinks and some long lapses without seeing our server but nothing that made the meal unpleasant- just items that felt that the experience could be a bit smoother. I anticipate that this will get worked out with time. Definitely worth the trip! I will definitely be returning since it's so close. I hope to make myself a regular here... SOON!

I went for lunch with my manager and 2 other coworkers. The restaurant is very nice and the ambiance is good. We started with the wings, crab salad and avocado fococcia, and the ricotta and artichoke fococcia. They were all very tasty. The parmesan buttermilk sauce that came with the wings were so delicious! I had the chicken salad panini with a side salad instead of the fries. It was delicious and light. They didn't use too much mayonnaise which I love. It also had a little citrus tang to it. My co-workers got the brisket panini which they enjoyed greatly. One of my co-workers doesn't like horseradish but she said it was barely noticeable and she really enjoyed the sandwich. I opted not to get it because of the horseradish but I might try it another time. I would definitely stop back in if I'm in the area.

I work in the Navy Yard so I was pleasantly surprised to find how convenient Lo Spiedo was. I had gone with my team for lunch and had heard glowing reviews from them about this place. The ambience of the location is nice, setting the scene of the restaurant. I had solely ordered the octopus roll and expected great things. While it was good, it wasn't apparent that there was octopus in it. It also wasn't a dish that completely blew me away, but it didn't need to. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it came with a large side of fries with ketchup and mayonnaise, making up for the small portion of the octopus roll. The service was excellent as well. My only gripe is that the food is a bit pricey, but it isn't exorbitant.

I've been excited about another dining option in the Navy Yard for a while, and I finally got to try Lo Spiedo for lunch. It was my first Vetri experience, so I came primed with high expectations. The inside is nice and bright and would probably make a great spot for dinner. We sat upstairs and saw that the restaurant does a pretty decent lunch business (no surprise there, but what about dinner? Can't imagine they are very busy after employees at the Navy Yard go home.) I opted for one of the lunch specials: 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 salad. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and the pumpkin salad. Both were really great. The chicken salad sandwich is buttery, salty and tender. The pumpkin salad was something I hadn't seen before, and the roasted pumpkin seed vinaigrette elevated the flavor of the dish tremendously. The shaved raw pumpkin was a great base for the vinaigrette and aged goat cheese. My only complaint is portion size. Like many other reviewers have mentioned, the portions are a bit on the small side. When my half sandwich and half salad came out, I was a bit surprised. I was expecting a heartier half sandwich, I guess. We split a side of fries for the table, and when everyone's plates were clear, we weren't hungry, but left a bit underwhelmed by the portion size. Service was great. Our server, Rob (?), knew a lot about the menu and answered any and all questions we had. Service was paced very well - not waiting too long for lunch is a huge plus during the work day.

I have been to Lo Spiedo for lunch, dinner and happy hours. I have waited to give my review to give them time to adjust and tweak things after opening earlier this year. First off, the ambiance is awesome. The restaurant is located in a historic building at the front gate of the Navy Yard. If the weather is right eating outside on the patio right next to a beautiful park offers views of the Navy Ships and modern progressive architecture. The food is mostly Italian BBQ coupled with some great Vetri pastas. I have had the brisket, ribs, burger, Cubano, eggplant, carrots, popcorn, octopus, salads, rigatoni. All are unique and all delicious. If you are looking for a more casual Vetri experience at a moderate price point in a unique setting, this is the place for you.

WOW! I've been pining to try Lo Spiedo since they opened last December. Wednesday night gave me an excellent opportunity as we were headed back from Delaware and it was a quick jump off I-95. The building has been nicely restored and presents well. Sitting on the outside patio revels beautiful views of the mothballed Navy ships juxtaposed with the modern office buildings built over the last 10 years. The staff was very welcoming even with a late 8:30 reservation (they close at 9). I was happy to see the restaurant still fairly well occupied meaning I didn't have to feel like I was imposing on the wait staff by coming in late. As is my practice, I asked the hostess, host and waitress what they felt were "can't miss" items on the menu. I had heard about the amazing chicken from this site and others and that was already on my target list. Fortunately, they have a great Lo Spiedo entree which samples almost all of the proteins on the menu. My wife an I supplemented it with a the mac and cheese and starters of chicken thigh spiedini and shrimp spiedini. The shrimp spiedini was described to be "large prawns", which is wasn't but still very tasty. The chicken thigh spiedini however was exceptional. Our main entrees were presented family style. The chicken lives up to the hype. Quiet possibly the best rotisserie chicken I have ever had with the exception of Diner's at the Reading Terminal Market. The Brisket was fantastic as well. The pulled pork was slightly overcooked but we were there late so I have to give them a break on that one. Chicken wings also came on the platter and they were amazing. Next time, these will be our starter. We finished with the Blueberry cast iron pie. It was hands down the best blueberry pie I have ever had. The berries were fresh and burst with juice when eaten. I have to elaborate that even as a rotisserie restaurant, nothing came across salty. In fact, I have to say that I was amazed at how well balanced every item was. Nothing was overpowering. Scott, the chef, did a fantastic job. Speaking of Scott, he made a point to come out of the kitchen and stop by our table to say "hi" and talk to us about our meal. He seemed so down-to-earth and has such a passion for what he does and the opportunities he has with the Vetri Foundation. Adrian was a great waitress and we will be asking for her in the future. All around exceptional experience and with just one meal, has shot to among my favorite restaurants in Philadelphia.

Great addition to the Navy Yard! That being said, if it were anywhere else in the city, I may have given 3 stars, rather than 4. However, we were in desperate need of a decent sit-down restaurant down here. When I started working at the Navy Yard 6 years ago, the lunchtime options were limited. Of course we had the fantastic URBN cafeteria, but there was no real good option for a business dinner or a holiday luncheon. Lo Spiedo definitely filled a void here. The first time I visited for lunch, I tried their rigatoni with fire roasted tomato sauce. While it was good, I felt the pasta was a bit thick and the sauce was a little bland. I mean, it still was tasty, but nothing to go out of my way for. Prices seemed a bit high, but really they were no higher than what you pay at URBN for some meals. The second time I visited was for a holiday luncheon. My bosses decided to go all out and did a huge family style menu. I'm pretty sure we ate everything on the menu. Here's what I thought: fried mozzarella - $8- meh, it's just fried cheese. Tasted good (hello, it's fried) but I'd save room in my belly for other offerings here shrimp spiedini - $7- this was amazing. ORDER THIS. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the sauce they were in was light and delicious Beef tartare with bagnetto verde - $8- raw beef freaks me out a little but I tried this anyway. This was also really good! I loved the grilled bread it came on as well. Ricotta + artichokes - $6- I dream of this dish. More of the awesome grilled bread with really fresh tasting ricotta (do they make their own?) and sautéed artichokes. Also, it's one of the best values on the menu. Reginette with macellaio bolognese - $14- this is another dish that visits me in my dreams. The pasta was cooked just right and the sauce... omg. If you are a fan of Bolognese like I am, GET THIS DISH. I will say, however, that this is a bit salty. So if you are sensitive to salt, keep that in mind BBQ carrots with ranch - $5- skip this dish. I thought it was gross. Sorry! It was just too much with the heavy BBQ sauce and then the heavy ranch. It was a sticky, too sweet mess. 1/2 chicken with lemon and olive oil - $18- SUPER delicious. I am not a huge meat eater and I typically don't order chicken out (I can make it at home!) but this chicken dish may have changed my mind on that! Something about their combination of the lemon, olive oil, and salt, on top of a nice juicy chicken, with a nice crispy skin on top. It was great. Creekstone farm brisket - $25 / $50- bleh... I only had a bite of this and then ate more of that awesome chicken. The brisket was too fatty for my liking. However, to be fair, I'm not a huge brisket fan- so take it FWIW. For the price though, I think there are better things to eat here. Desserts- we had a couple of their desserts, but to be honest, I was way too full to even look at them. All my dining companions thought they were amazing, so if you have a sweet tooth, save some room for dessert. Overall, I think Lo Spiedo is a great addition to our neighborhood down here. It's a bit on the pricey side for an everyday-lunch type of place, but it's perfect for a special lunch or a dinner out. Word on the street is that their happy hour is great. I'm definitely going to come back for a couple of beers and some more of those appetizers!

This establishment is home to a waitress named Amanda. This beautiful, short-haired angel is easily the greatest server my company has ever been so graced to have met. The food and drinks were all wonderful, but no amount of yelping can sum up the quality of experience provided by Amanda.

I work at the Navy Yard and it's about time a great restaurant went in! My boss, a coworker, and I went over for lunch and had a great time. I had the roasted octopus roll, which is served with a side salad, both of which were great! He had the burger and really enjoyed it, as well. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The upstairs dining room was crowded but our server took the time to go item by item to explain any modifications that could be made so that my coworker with a shellfish allergy could order. I went back for a happy hour and the place was mobbed. Our happy hour ended up being much larger than anticipated, and they were really gracious and gave us a separate room upstairs, even though we weren't ordering food. The bartenders give great recommendations and are fun to chat with! I'm sure Vetri's latest venture will be just as successful as his others!

If you looking for ambience like fancy place this is the place but for the foods I'm not sure about it. We order popcorn for my 12 yrs daughter, nothing to brag about it. It stale & tooooooo salty. I'm very sure they use kind of seasoning for cooking crabs like oldbay kind. I think, microwave popcorn better than that, then we have shrimp appetizer is very salty also, then we order corn soup for my 14 months, it's okay. Then we hv some pasta that salty then we hv some kind of BBQ sampler for two, also salty & very oily, to many fat. The waiter ignore us, but I still gv good tips since my 14 months make pretty mess. Overpriced but I really don't mind overpriced as long taste excellent but this far from good. Sorry!

Dinner here tonight did not match up to Friday's hence the loss of one star. It was a cool night and there was no parking in the lot. That's ok except I heard the waitress tell another diner that they could leave their car there and save the parking fee for tonight's football game. That aside, we got a table near the front windows and you could feel the draft through the wall. The music was particularly loud and the place was crowded. Even the waitstaff could not hear us well. Burger was very good with a large side of fries. The octopus was a bit mushy, not at all like the perfect order of same a few days earlier. The pumpkin salad was nicely seasoned but was thin slices of raw butternut or some other orange member of the pumpkin family. I did not enjoy this and neither did the couple sitting next to us who sent theirs back. The happy hour menu continues to provide great value but the time for happy hour changed.

Came here excited to try a new Vetri and it was not even open 30 minutes after it's scheduled to open! Poor showing that I don't expect from the Vetri family restaurants

Service very good Portions are very small and especially for the price. Grilled octopus is good but portion way to small. Apple pie was good... Only 3 dessert choices Mac and cheese was pretty good

Beautiful building at the Navy Yard... I had the pulled pork sandwich with pickles and vinegar ~ so good! My BF had the brisket burger on toast also very good! My favorite of course was desert Devil dog with Nutella and chocolate covered popcorn. Can't wait to go back

Worth the trip down Broad Street. We had pre-drinks in Passyunk Square then uber-x to Lo Spiedo for $11. We also walked 10 minutes back to Broad Street line after dinner. But enough about transportation...great atmosphere and amazing food at reasonable prices. There were just 2 of us and we had the popcorn and chicken thighs as a snack, then split the grilled Octopus, bucatini pasta and bbq carrots. Each were fantastic and we have been craving the Octopus since we left. I would highly recommend everything we ate and I will say the 3 small chicken thighs kept us wanting more - but since it's only $5 - ordering more doesn't break the bank. They were our favorite with the octopus a very close second. We also had the special dessert of the Nutella Whoopie pies - great way to end the meal! Go here with just 2 of you or a crowd- it's a great time! With tip, the food above and a bottle of wine, we spent $145 - not too bad.

Lo Spiedo is an interesting useful restaurant. I shall first mention its bad points. It is in a strange and isolated location. It is almost too spacious and so lacks coziness. Its menu is too small and monotonous. It seems to alternate between loneliness and being overrun by business colleagues letting loose. And because it is only accessible by car it lacks the comfortable feel of a neighborhood haunt. I find socializing there impossible. It is expensive. My tab yesterday was $100 but I have averaged $70. Its location, however, protects it from being overrun. I imagine its small menu enables it to perfect the few things it makes, which revolve around grilled foods. Its bartenders are extremely discreet and efficient. Most of the food I have had there was very good. I had one mediocre chicken and thought the place was slipping, but yesterday I returned and had the best steak in my memory. Its televisions are well-placed and it is an exceptional place to watch a game if they choose to show the game you want.

We finally made it down to Marc Vetri's new outpost in the Naval Yard. It is a hike and now that they have gotten their sign it will be a little less difficult to find the place. The space is very nice and the service is attentive but not overly so. We have been to every Vetri restaurant except Vetri (which we will remedy soon) and I have to say that everything here was good but just not exceptional. The polenta with meat drippings was great as was the mac and cheese (this was the best dish of the night) but the pork shoulder while being a nice healthy portion was good but not as good as the pork that I have had a Osteria on the other side of Broad St. The grilled octopus was also good but again not outstanding. I have been dreading writing this review because I love all of Vetri's places, especially Alla Spina but this is one that I would skip. Maybe they were having an off night, not sure, I will keep an eye out on the reviews and maybe we will return in the future.

Happened upon this place on a road trip and was very pleased. The food is far better than the team in the stadium across the street (LoL). Service was prompt, friendly and helpful with the menu. The chicken salad sandwich was really tasty although the bread was too wide to fit in my mouth so I ate it open faced. I joined that with the creamed kale which preserved the texture unlike many soupy creamed spinach dishes. Oh, and the fries were delish! My wife and kid both enjoyed their wings and pumpkin salad and vegetarian spadeeny (sp?). The bar downstairs looked like a cool place to hang out if we weren't hitting the road to New York.

Came here for dinner with a few friends last Friday and I had a great experience. We started with an essortment of drinks - a few people had wine, my husband had scotch and my friend and I had some sort of drink with grapefruit (it was on the cocktail menu) drink. The drink was really yummy - not too sour and not too sweet. Just right. Perfect way to start the night. All the food came out at once which was a little overwhelming - we had put in our order for everything together so maybe that was our fault. We ordered a whole assortment of things. My favorite items are starred below.. Grilled Chicken Wings - The wings were good and I really enjoyed the sauce that came on the side. Mac & cheese * - My favorite dish. Perfectly cooked, crispy on top, and cheesy gooey goodness. Farm Brisket - Brisket was tender and delicious. 1/2 Chicken with Lemon & Olive Oil - The chicken was super tender and liked the fact that the marinade was simple yet really good. Pork Ribs - Was okay. A little too charred for me. Spit-Roasted Octopus * - One of my favorite dishes. Cooked to perfection. Cast iron Apple Pie with Cinnamon Semifreddo - This dessert was SOO yummy. Loved how this wasn't your traditional apple pie with a flaky crust.

We have been here multiple times, and on every occasion the food never disappoints. Tonight, along with a fantastic dinner, the service was superb. This guy was off the chart and I forgot his name. Sorry. If Marc is reading this, we ate downstairs on Wednesday night. You'll know who it is. Highly recommend!

My extreme love for Mark Vetri end here. This TGI Friday like restaurant is not worth the 15 minute drive into the navel yard. Every dish fell below expectation. The wings were good but I expected better.

Service started off bad when we waited over 30 minutes past our reservation time. The staff did apologize and sent out comped treats, but what is the point of a reservation if you have to wait that long? There is a large bar but was full the night we dined. Menu highlights included the delicious champagne grapefruit granita cocktail, roasted vegetables with romesco and the half chicken. Those were all fantastic! Disappointing dishes included the popcorn, Caesar salad, shrimp spiedini and bucatini. Overall I think this place is still working out some kinks, but I would give it another shot.

I love Vetri's restaurants but this one is really not on par with his other places. I like the idea of setting up shop at the navy yard. I figured the place would be more casual than his other places. I would describe it as casual italian, but unfortunately there is still a somewhat intimidating menu for some and the prices do not reflect the casual nature. The only thing we kind of liked was the Caesar salad and even this was drenched in dressing and the presentation was sloppy. We ordered the mozzarella bites and for $8 received 5 quarter sized cheese bites. For dinner I had the rigatoni which was simple, good, uninventive. My boyfriend had ribs and said they were very dry. I really wanted to like this place but the food is simply not very good.

Sweet happy hour deals! The happy hour menu has offerings similar to those of the regular menu, but at some sweet prices. I feel that to love Lo Spiedo, you have to love pork. Otherwise, it will be a slight challenge, but certainly not impossible. We ordered a pasta dish with a decent amount of pork fat in it. It was slightly much, but not too bad. We also ordered semifreddo for dessert, which was tasty with meringue bits. The dessert was served in a cast iron dish, which was kind of odd. The wait staff was very friendly. The location is a challenge to find if you aren't from the area. But, there is ample parking. The ample parking is a huge plus. If you are going to go, go for happy hour. They serve happy hour specials all over the restaurant, not just at the bar.

This place was outstanding!!! Atmosphere, service, and the food. The food, over the top. We ate small and regular dishes and past around the table. Ribs, steak, octopus and brisket. We also had great apps: tuna, shrimp steak tartare, and roasted veggies. I could go on. Needless to say the chef nailed it!!!! Great location in the old Navy Yard. Avoided downtown hassle. This will be a regular stop anytime I am going to the stadiums. A list.

Went here for lunch during the week. What a great addition to the Navy Yard. The setting was great, the service was friendly and attentive. The parking situation is not good. The food was delicious. We got the corn bread with meat drippings, and it was a good starter. We then each got a 1/2 salad, 1/2 sandwich. The salads are interesting and tasty. The sandwiches were very tasty. They feature their open fire cooking, and it makes everything taste so good. The Caesar leaves are toasted as such. Also, the fire smell is a nice welcome when walking up. Would definitely come back for lunch. Great service, great food, good prices.

I'm a fan of Marc Vetri restaurants but not this one. I was disappointed with the menu but the drinks were good. We tried the polenta with drippings, beets, BBQ carrots, focaccia with artichoke & ricotta, octopus, pork shoulder, and the chicken. The chicken was by far the best menu item, juicy and full of flavor. The pork shoulder disappointing and greasy. Reasonable prices and our server was friendly and helpful with menu suggestions.

  • D J.

This was just a dud for us. The service was good and friendly, but the food was very disappointing. Excellent ingredients but mediocre and heavy handed results. The half chicken was so syrupy sweet from too much lemon and butter that it was like a chicken limoncello. The smoked beets were over-poweringly smokey and lacked any subtlety. The boring chopped pork shoulder sandwich arrived on a hamburger bun like we have at home. The carrots had to be scraped free of excess bbq sauce. Rigatoni was good. Pea salad was almost okay, but what was the stretched-out wad of chewing gum like stracciatella doing in the middle of it? Drinks were good. Kitchen was extremely slow. We are big Vetri fans, but Lo Spiedo just didn't do it for us.

So if I could do 3.5 stars I would. I really wanted to like it more since I'm a big Osteria and Alla Spina fan. Everything was just ok. Pork, octopus, creamed kale and beets. I really liked their ginger beer I think I'd go back to try the ribs and the cornbread. It looked great. Our server Amanda was great and it's a great building. I'd recommend it to try, just don't expect the same experience as other Vetri restaurants.

Lo Spiedo bears the marks of other Vetri places (been to Vetri's orginal place a couple of times and to the Osteria two times as well). Food that is rustic, sometimes very good (especially at Vetri) and overwhelmingly and incredibly annoyingly rich. As in, there is no way to escape the over fattiness of the menu. So the high points were the "rotisserie" octopus and the sardine and olive dish. The rest (the brisket, the escarole, the carrots) were decidedly uninspired. The service was jovial, a little too "present," but all in all fine. The prices, contrary to what some commenters are saying, are pretty much what you would expect for this category of yuppy restaurant--though I would like slightly more generous pours on the wines (a general pet peeve--you aren't supposed to get nine glasses out of a bottle!). But my biggest complaint, as suggested above, is that there is literally not a single dish on the menu that can offset the fattiness of everything. Using fats--whether olive oil, cheese, butter, or whatever else you can find--is OK in moderation. But aside from being unhealthy, is completely unappetizing over a whole meal when there is no way to escape it. For example, I would have loved the sardines (rich with olive oil and olives) with a very light bitter green (say frisee or dandelion greens, or even the escarole) with just a little lemon juice and olive oil, salt and pepper. Instead, the only salad we could find that came close was the escarole which was swimming in dressing, covered in snow drift of Parmesan and ultimately just added more fat to the total. Perhaps the most telling example of this were the one vegetable that might have escaped this menu trend--the carrots. Nope. Swimming in fat and sugar and decidedly heavy. Again, there is not a single item on the dish that goes against this trend. And the fact is, in 2014 this is lazy cooking. It easy to make things taste "good" with a lot of fat. Restaurants discovered this years ago with mashed potatoes. Why do restaurant mashed potatoes taste so good? Because they are at least 30% butter (I kid you not--it's a standard recipe). It's also bad cooking. I don't want to feel like crap when I leave the table. I don't want to stay up all night digesting. So give me a balanced menu where I can order one rich dish and then one or two light offsetting dishes that will create a sense of balance. It's like wine, you want equilibrium. Lo Spiedo/Vetri have lost all sense of balance and the result is mediocrity. Also, a sign indicating where the restaurant is would be a friendly gesture to the clientelle. I would add that there is a kind of "afterthought" quality to the place. As if Vetri had been given a good deal on the place but wasn't particularly inspired by it, didn't really care all that much. From the finish of the place to the menu, this feels like a last-minute exercise.

The food and service was very average to below average. Portions were decent but the quality of the dishes and presentation was nothing special. A particular pet peeve was that the tables are obnoxiously close together. I'm talking mere inches to spare on both sides - almost community seating. Very difficult to have any type of private conversation or not overhear others. On the plus side, the location is great and the building is very nicely redone. My manhattan was excellent and they have a decent beer list.

Beautiful bar but like all Vetri joints, overpriced for what you get. Then again there's a captive corporate audience at the Navy Yard so it'll do well regardless of what he charges. I was still starving after my $15 Octopus Roll, but also feeling sick from the amount of mayo it had. Fries were good though.

I usally don't write reviews but Vetri has done it again I've been to several of his restaurants and this one is another i will frequent. Great menu outstanding service and a casual atmosphere you will not be disappointed. Sample the proteins we had a table of four and did the ribs , brisket and pork shoulder ,all packed with flavor, homemade pastas(standard for vetri) and desserts worth the trip.

I really wanted to love this restaurant. I was so disappointed with our food. I thought the polenta was super salty. Popcorn!!! Was so seasoned with a special rub. Was horrific. I ordered the octopus and this was very slimy. Presentation was lacking. Boston cream zuccuto was a ball of goo. Not up to par with the other restaurants. Service was also poor..

Sardine/olive with focaccia to start made it worth the price of admission. Can't wait to try everything else. Pulled pork was spot on, took on the nice smoke flavor that you smell when you walk in...perfect soft seeded roll to go with it. Great mac n cheese and bbq carrots. Will be back soon

In my wife words, It was good...the wings were smokey and to die for...ginger beer was a bit tart, but it's ginger beer, right? Salads were functional....Closed with the apple pie topped with cinnamon ice cream.. The universe stood still...enjoy!!

I went to Lo Spiedo with hopes of experiencing a memorable meal. I was having dinner with a few work colleagues. The server was attentive and provided good service. To start we ordered the polenta cornbread, chicken wings and fried mozzarella. Nothing stood out, needed more flavor. The server over heard us making a comment about getting six small pieces of fried mozz for $8 and sent us another plate on the house. This was not necessary but a nice gesture. For dinner I ordered the pork shoulder which was disappointing. The outside portions of the pork were dry from being over cooked and needed seasoning. One of my colleagues ordered the Bucatini which he said was over salted and not impressive. I will say the creamed kale was excellent, cream and butter make everything taste great. The mac and cheese was also good. The server told me the restaurant was all about simple seasonings and they want the wood oven to stand out. I wanted to like this place but I was not impressed at all.

As a Vetri restaurant - I was displeased with the lack of flavor and poor service. The octopus roll was delicious but was the size of my thumb. The pumpkin salad was totally misrepresented on the menu (it's more of a vinegar/cabbage salad with pumpkin seeds). Also, why do you need so many different menus? Can you slim it down to two? I felt like I was playing cards. Our waiter could not distinguish any of the white wine on their menu from the other when we asked questions. Sadly, unless I worked in the Navy Yard - I would only come back for that octopus roll for lunch and hope that the pot of french fries would fill me up. Otherwise, it isn't worth the trek or the money.

After reading all the dinner reviews we went today for lunch - which is much cheaper - to check out. Yes, like others I drove past it and had to circle back but found a place in the small pkg lot because it was lunch time and after 1pm. We asked if the wings (6 for $7) were spicy. The waiter said "no" but there use a little cayenne pepper. I said we don't tolerate pepper well and he said we'd be fine. So took the chance. They were spicy but not at spicy as buffalo wings. And you get a lot of aoli dip to cut the burn. If spicy is not an issue these are good choice. My partner got the Brisket Burger ($12) and asked for baked beans instead of fries and they did that. Beans were good but a little to vinegary for my taste. I saw two others nearby with the Brisket SANDWICH and it looked good. Came with fries and interesting slaw. I had read here on a few reviews that the chopped brisket was way to salty. I like salt on my food and hoped they toned it down some (not sure if they read the Yelp reviews). Well it was VERY salty - more than even salty ham. When the waiter came by to check on us I had eaten half the sandwich and I did point out that there were yelp comments and they obviously didn't cut the salt content. He offered to exchange for something else but I said I'd finish it, just that someone should know the customers' comments. The portions were large - and all we drank was water. The tab for the three items we ordered came to $38 with tax before tip. As I left I looked in the kitchen and one of the cooks greeted me. I mentioned to he about the salty brisket but I'm not sure he planned to do anything about it. My suggestion is if you think you want the brisket ask for a sample taste, (I'm sure they will oblige) before confirming your order. The tables upstairs were not as close as someone mentioned and there is a private room where they put groups of 6 or more so it was reasonable quiet,

Very disappointing - especially for a MV restaurant. (Alla Spina and Osteria are among my top 20 Philly favs). No place to park on a freezing night, couldn't figure out which was the front door (signage??), very cool renovation but tables too close together, couldn't hear server over blasting anxiety-producing techno music, took 5 minutes to get someone's attention to bring me a fork. We had ribs - plenty of them - big greasy, fatty, tasteless, slightly undercooked for $18 with nothing else. (far superior ribs at Nicks Charcoal on Snyder) Two measly pieces of octopus tentacles for $20 - again, with nothing else. Sides suggested by server - pumpkin salad and cabbage w/ gorgonzola were creative and tasty but smothered in oil. Except for the fork incident, service was excellent.

As you walk into Lo Spiedo, distinctive smoke flavor is detected. Right away you know that you are in for a good meal. Although the pork ribs were tasty, octopus was the highlight cooked to perfection. In addition, housemade ginger beer was worth trying.

Me and my boss are boss ate here for diner while in town for a few days. He's traveled for 10 years and me for 5. Upon arrival our expectations where high. I was expecting the same quality of ingredients and quality of cooking from a previous restaurant in Charleston. The BBQ carrots where pretty good, will make a variation of these at home. He got the mac and cheese, both of which we shared. The mac and cheese wasn't very good. there wasn't much flavor. we both got the "Italian" ribs, which were horrible. i get the feeling they were cooked to order, which is how ribs are not suppose to be done. they need to be smoked for 5+ hours, or boiled then grilled, but these cooks were not afraid of open flame with these ribs. i spent 5 minutes or more and one mouthful of meat. if crispy tough ribs are your thing, then go for it. if this is how Italians cook their ribs then they have epically failed!

I have been here twice now and both times the food was great. My first time here was right after they opened--tried the barbecue carrots as other reviewers recommended and they were cold and not very tasty. I couldn't figure out if that was the intention or not. My second time there they were hot and delicious! Everything else we have tried has been excellent. I would highly suggest trying the Ginger shandy--soooooo good. The parking is great here if you go at night when the businesses are closed. My only gripe (and the reason I am giving 4 stars) is both times I have gone it has been incredibly loud.

Cool place with a really good quality food ! Portions are small , it's not McDonalds, order a couple of different fun appetizers, dessert and at the end of a meal you'll feel full! Great service too!

The restaurant is a beautiful old building at the Philadelphia navy yard , we were promptly seated upstairs I had pork ribs they don't have any type of gravy or bbq sauce very dry food Wife had brisket no gravy or any sauce very dry. Food was $$$$ and it was not worth the money very disappointed

Service very good Portions are very small and especially for the price. Grilled octopus is good but portion way to small. Apple pie was good... Only 3 dessert choices Mac and cheese was pretty good

Came here excited to try a new Vetri and it was not even open 30 minutes after it's scheduled to open! Poor showing that I don't expect from the Vetri family restaurants

Beautiful building at the Navy Yard... I had the pulled pork sandwich with pickles and vinegar ~ so good! My BF had the brisket burger on toast also very good! My favorite of course was desert Devil dog with Nutella and chocolate covered popcorn. Can't wait to go back

SOON!

What an incredible restaurant. Best bolagnese ever! We also has the brisket and it was great. Folks around me had the dessert and they raved about it. It's a great spot for a wonderful casual meal with friends. It surely beats the competition around it

My extreme love for Mark Vetri end here. This TGI Friday like restaurant is not worth the 15 minute drive into the navel yard. Every dish fell below expectation. The wings were good but I expected better.

A list.

Still a great place. As an update i've since been for dinner as well and it was Stellar. There IS a handicapped entrance and now it is clearly marked.

Great happy hour tasting menu... Not only was the food and cocktails excellent, but the staff was talented, friendly, fun and passionate about making a memorable experience for the customers.

Great location and really enjoyable menu. I'm a fan of dining outdoors and it provides just that with a great patio that gives a nice suburban feel amongst the Philly craziness.

The perfect place for out of towners and suburbanites looking for a big city experience. Simple, heavily salted grilled foods. The house wines are nice and light and the small beer glasses keep you from drinking too much for the drive home. At around $100 a couple including tip it feels like you've had a big night out without having to do much more than drive in, park in the lot and get right back on 95 and get home.

Salty, salty, salty. I was really hoping to like this place, but today I ordered a chicken salad Panini, which actually wasn't even a Panini now that I think about it. I was expecting a Panini which is grilled on top and bottom. But this was just a normal sandwich. Yet this is not even my biggest complaint. The worst offense is the salt...it is drowning in salt!!! Why would chicken salad need this much salt?!! Not only that, but I ordered this as take-out and there was bacon on the sandwich which is NOT listed on the menu ingredients! What if I was not able to eat pork?! This is absolutely not acceptable. Luckily I like bacon, but even still I could not even eat the 2nd half of the sandwich because of the high salt level. And it wasn't the bacon that made the sandwich salty...it was overly salty on its own! It also had some chicken parts that were fatty and not edible which was gross, but I can give them a pass this time on that part. Fries come with the sandwich and when I opened them up they were cold. Although this was take-out, my office is right at the navy yard, not far at all from where the restaurant is so it shouldn't have been completely cold. I could even forgive that part, but I can't forgive the fact that they were also completely covered in salt just like my chicken salad sandwich! I couldn't escape the salt no matter what I seemed to have there! What a shame! There is a real epidemic of over seasoning by chefs these days with salt and pepper. If chefs would only realize that if it needs more salt or pepper, we can add it ourselves!! I mean, you can always put more on, but you can't take it off once it's on there! Everyone has a different level of tolerance for salt/pepper so they need to take that into consideration when cooking for people! Just because the chef likes a lot of salt doesn't mean we all do! Or maybe chefs are just not tasting the food before they send it out, not sure. But basically they are ruining their potentially great dishes by over seasoning! Another thing which was weird was that they gave me a container of mayo. Why would I need to add more mayo to the chicken salad which already has mayo???!!! Strange I thought, but perhaps a simple mistake and not that big of a deal. Overall, I feel like menu is overly laden with fatty foods and heavy dishes with over salted items and unfortunately, there is little to eat at all that appears healthy, other than a salad which other yelpers commented was drenched in salad dressing, making it again unhealthy. So that is disappointing for sure. They have the makings for a great restaurant here but definitely need some serious tweeks. On a positive note, I am happy with the location as it is close to work and I really do like the décor. The staff was also extremely pleasant and helpful. I will definitely give this place another shot as it is close to where I work, but if they strike out again, I'm not sure I'll return for food, close or not. I may give the happy hour a try if just for a cocktail anyway. I really hope you guys are reading these comments and taking these things as constructive criticism. I'm sorry this review comes off so negative, but guys please make some changes to both the menu choices and the food prep/seasoning. I really want to like this place! And you may want to take a trip over to Moonshine on Moyamensing, 'cause those guys are doing it right! The food and even the drinks are phenomenal there! The menu is similar actually, but they are just executing it way way better. Sorry guys, just being honest. I hope to be able to update this with a more positive review after my next visit.
