To start off we got the Hamachi Ceviche, which was yummy. Then we got the Grilled Shrimp Entrada and the Green Enchiladas con Pollo. The shrimp were grilled perfectly and all the flavors were very clean. We also got the Domingo Sundae for dessert, which was very decadent. I think leaving off the caramel popcorn would help the churros ice cream stand out more though. Service was great. Nice place to go if you want to enjoy Mexican in a fancier setting.

My wife & I literally stumbled upon this place with no expectations whatsoever, and came away feeling like we just found a really special place. The last time I had a good chicken Molé was ten years ago in a dusty fishing village in Baja, where a very old woman with one eye stewed a giant pot of Molé, that was an almost mystical combination of flavors. Everyone in the town came to that little outside food stand for her Molé the way pilgrims crawl on their knees. Since then I have ordered Molé in countless "Mexican" restaurants hoping to find some approximation of that magic, but always came away empty handed, and wishing I had ordered something else. Not so here. I found my Molé. It was a more upscale/modern take on the dish but it was the real thing (Molé is a very complex dark sauce made from chills, tomatillos, fruits and countless other things including chocolate, and real Mexican cooks take pride in their secret preparation of their proprietary version of this stuff). The Molé I had in Mexico was prepared with the chicken stewed right in the sauce (for hours and hours, so the flavor becomes part of the meat), so in that sense it was not entirely traditional, but the chef really made up for that in the way the chicken was prepared- it was magnificent in itself, and as good as my favorite roast chicken at Rouge, retaining it's own tenderness and flavor. And the sauce in combination made a symphony of flavors. My wife had simple chicken tacos, and as we shared our food it became apparent what this place was all about. The tacos were just like our favorite street tacos we ate at countless stands in little towns in Mexico, where you sit at night and order one after the other, adding fresh little condiments of all sorts, drizzle a little lime, across from someone who spends their whole life rolling little tortillas made from scratch. This is the most "common" of food, eaten by the most common of people, but it is also something truly special, that is sometimes transcendent. It is very sensual. It is made from simple things of the earth, that come in pure form and are combined in a very sophisticated way. It is a testimony that amazing food does not have to come from chefs trained in Paris, and can be found in cultural traditions with deep roots that are specific to a particular place. Someone at La Calaca Feliz understood this and brought these flavors to Philadelphia. They are rarely found outside the little villages and towns of Mexico, and eating here really conjured the feeling of those nights sitting under a Mexican moon at those little places that make a mark in your memory. Everything about the food seemed to be about the interplay of flavors, often unexpected. The warm chocolate cake desert was tinged with the flavor of chile pepper, which made a counterpoint to the banana ice-cream (my guess is that it was prepared with that chocolate-with-chile you find everywhere in Mexico that comes in little round packages). You could say that the point in all this was to create something totally unexpected, and you could say adventurous. It was a modern take on the very best of home-grown Mexican cuisine and entirely authentic. The service was excellent (Hi to our server Lisa!) and it was nice to sit out in the enclosed garden patio on a warm July night (from the outside, this place looks tiny but you are surprised once you walk past the bar and find a huge dining room and absolutely lovely outside patio). If you are looking for large portions and the kind of Americanized Tex-Mex stuff you find at most Mexican restaurants, you will be disappointed. This place is about small, interesting dishes that are an homage to a unique culinary tradition. And who ever thought I would find this amazing Molé right here in Philadelphia, of all places.

I tried this place for my boyfriend's birthday this weekend. We went during their Restaurant Week, but since it was our first time at the restaurant and we were celebrating his big day, we decided to order from the regular menu and get a good idea of what the place was like. We started off with the guacamole and salsa. Both delicious. The guacamole comes out already mixed in one of those stone bowls. As appetizers we had the meatballs and the albondigas skewers - the meatballs were to die for, oozing cheese... and the octopus was grilled to perfection even though it tasted a bit dry. In retrospect, a little lemon juice would have been perfect. For the main dishes, my boyfriend had the grilled shrimp and i had the black bass. His shrimp was good, it had a bean sauce which made it interesting, but my dish was truly amazing. It came with rice mixed with corn, asparagus and crab meat. So incredibly good! The desserts looked yummy but we were both so full that we passed. The waitress - who was a sweetheart - brought over some delicious gelato with a candle for the birthday boy. I thought it was a very nice touch. The restaurant itself is deceiving in that it is very narrow and small when you first walk in, but it opens up into a beautifully painted room, with lots of bright colors and cool details. I heard there's a nice outside area as well, but it was dark so I didn't get to see it. We sat my a fireplace which will be extremely cozy in the winter. Overall a great experience, I recommend it!

this place is great! we went on a monday and kinda early to get happy hour so it was a bit slow which only meant the bartender talked to us a bit at the bar which was nice. he explained the tequilas and chatted. as others have mentioned the margaritas are pretty great and mine was fairly strong which is always a nice perk for happy hour prices! we shared the nachos and fish tacos...both were excellent ad highly recommended! the nachos are way better than bishops collar down the street and rival the ones at jose pistolas, unsure which ones are better! the day we went they had a wing special which sounded great, hopefully they will have them the next time i am there to try! looking forward to going back - this is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood!

Listen up. And listen closely. Bitches. Trust me when I tell you that the Black Bass is one of the best dishes in the history of dishes. Yes. You're reading this correctly. And don't give me this, "Well you're just some stupidass cat...of course you're going to like the fish." First off, I'll swat you. Secondly, I've roamed through many back alleys from the streets of the Big Apple, to the cobblestone roads (not easy on the paws) of The Golden City, sampling all various cuisines. I sure as hell know whether or not a Chef can stir up a quality meal. The Black Bass? That Chef can cook. However, before you ugly Humans indulge in the Bass, get yourselves the Hiramasa Ceviche, Campechana Tlayuda (shortrib flatbread), and the Crab Fundido, and wash it all down with a few King Bee's and Bestia Margaritas. Trust me. This Cat knows what he's talkin' about. - Esquire

OK spot in Fairmount for Mexican but it's trying to be El Vez and its not. It was Friday night, pretty crowded, but we had a reservation and were sat right away. Didn't see our server for ten minutes after we sat but after that she was great and offered a lot of advice on the menu. I did notice a couple managers walking around so they are paying attention. We got Guac, Chorizo Tacos, Carnitas Tacos, and a pitcher of red sangria. The chorizo tacos were kindof spicy a decent size (you get 3) and I'd get again. Free chips and salsa was cool, and the salsa was a sweeter one. Not that the guac and carnitas tacos were forgettable, but they were average. The pitcher of sangria is a carafe, not a pitcher and you will get 4 smaller glasses full of ice of it. Since prices are very similar, I would go El Vez or somewhere else instead.

I keep coming back here for the nachos- they might be my favorite nachos in Philly. The place gets busy, but the wait is never too bad and the margaritas are good too. Tacos here aren't worth ordering more than once, and other than that, it's a bit overpriced. Living with Hispanic neighbors that cooked homemade tortillas and mole on a regular basis has really raised my bar for good tacos, and I have yet to find the street taco that I yearn for in Philadelphia. I feel like they are trying too hard to be fancy with this place, and then charging for it. I absolutely love Mexican food, but I don't need someone to come wipe all the corn I spilled on the table off before they bring the next course. I would actually prefer a little more grit! Also, $40 is a little steep for 2 drinks and 2 appetizers! The patio looks really nice, and I imagine it might be much quieter than the inside, which can get really noisy at times, but I have never been able to check it out myself.

I found it guys! The perfect taco resides at La Calaca Feliz! I had the Baja fish tacos with a side of fried plantains and washed it down with a chili (spicy) margarita! The taco even had radishes on it, a true testament authentic goodness! Our server was super patient, as we were from out of town, and our food came out very quickly. I would love to go again and try some of their tequilas. My colleague had the seafood enchiladas, and didn't talk until he was done.

Having grown up in Mexico I found some of the food lacking. Definitely do not get the tortilla soup. The chicken was either undercooked or heavily processed. It was like rubber, the mystery meat in the Campbell's can is better. The fish tacos were good but deep fried, not authentic by any means. The chicken tacos were good and a little more traditional, though the tortillas are better on 8th st. The arrachera was tasteless and did not have the traditional sides. The guacamole was good but very to much lemon the chips were good and the tortilla helping was generous. The servers were very nice though the food came out slowly. The margaritas are very strong and the churro ice cream and mango sorbet were good, though not home made. The prices were very very fair, so if you want a decent Mexican that is going towards authentic and you are in the neighborhood, then stop by. Otherwise find out where the taco truck is stopping next and head there.

The low-down on La Calaca Feliz: 1) The guacamole is pretty good. It's a smidgen on the creamy side, but still with enough soft chunks to not be a complete puree failure. It's also served in one of those stone bowls...which only makes you yearn for someone to have blended it table side. 2) The mushroom tacos are great. The grilled mushrooms aren't sopping in oil, nor are they raw on the inside. Cooked all the way through with a slight lemon tang, the mushrooms mush wonderfully with the creamy not-so-sour cream spread on the doughy soft taco shells. The asparagus accompanying the tacos adds a bit of color to the dish, and like their bedmates, are cooked to perfection. They're not oily...they're not watery...they're just right.

I've eaten at La Calaca Feliz several times now, and the food has been great. As many others have commented, the fish tacos are excellent, and I love the new addition of a spicy shrimp and grits to the entrée selection. The guacamole, pork belly appetizer, plantains, and the Brussels sprout tlayuda were all really tasty (the ceviche was good, but not great). However, my main issue with this place during my last couple of visits is the management. It is not a huge dining room, and they cram as many tables as possible (like many restaurants in the city), but it seems that sometimes the patrons here have one too many margaritas and forget their table manners in this type of setting. On one occasion, a woman was visiting with her friend at the table next to us and leaned over so her bum was literally pushing against our table. Our waitress rolled her eyes at the woman, shrugged and apologized to us, but it was clear that she wasn't going to do anything about it. My boyfriend asked the woman to move, and she did, but it was awkward, unnecessary, and could easily have been handled by the wait staff or management. On the most recent occasion, as soon as we were seated, we were told that the table next to us was pretty rowdy and that they had already been spoken to. It was a Saturday night, and I understand high volume, but these people were just ridiculous - screaming and shouting. In my opinion, this is not the type of restaurant where that is appropriate. Halfway through our meal, we asked our waitress to speak with her manager again since the group was only getting louder. He came over to us and told us that he could move us, but that he "really didn't want to ruin the guy's birthday" at the next table. Did we want to pick up in the middle of our meal and head down a couple tables where I'm sure we could still hear these people? Absolutely not. Why not ask the party to move to the bar area since they had finished eating? Or at least comp us an appetizer for putting up with it? Why they wanted to accommodate this party and not the rest of their patrons is unclear to me, but it made for a less than pleasant dining experience. The management at this restaurant needs to step up and deal with these types of issues when they come up. I really like the food here, but these two experiences have left a bitter aftertaste.

I love Xochitl and Lolita, so when I heard some of the folks behind those restaurants were opening up a spot in Fairmount, I was looking forward to trying it. Big disappointment. Ok, not big, but La Calaca Feliz certainly doesn't live up to the food at either of the aforementioned restaurants. Unless you live in the area, there's no reason to go out of your way to visit. The decor, atmosphere and service were good, and while the food was fine, it just wasn't interesting. We had the guac, enchiladas, tacos and a pitcher of sangria. I'm not even sure the tortillas were housemade. I'd much prefer the tacquerias on Washington Ave. Just a heads-up: It's tough to get a table on a Friday night. La Calaca only takes reservations for parties of 6, but I was told that we could call ahead 20 minutes to put our names on the list. So I did and was told the wait was actually going to be 45 minutes. No prob. We arrived on time, just a few minutes before the 45-minute mark. But then I was told by the host that it would be another 45 minutes. O-k. Luckily, if you need to pass the time, there are several great watering holes in the area, including Bishop's Collar, Brigid's and London. Then again, you might just be better off having your dinner at one of those restaurants instead of La Calaca.

Maybe the exuberant reviews are due to the dearth of Mexican restaurants in Philly. I ate here and all I can say is that the food was consistently salty, from the plantains to the tacos, everything tasted of salt. The only dish I can recommend is the meatball with cheese inside (not sure what it is called, a friend ordered it).

What a great Mexican spot conveniently placed around the corner from me. Everything from the ambiance, to the friendly staff and amazing standout mexican food and drinks is great here. I've had the pleasure of sampling both the brunch and dinner menus. Memorable items were the breakfast nachos, pinapple panacake and guac. The chicken tacos were tasty but I didn't think they were anything to brag about. I look forward to returning soon as I had my eye on a yummy crab entree last time I was there. The space is a little tight, especially the bar area that you initially walk into. The dining room is wide open with great decor, however, and I love the lookout onto the outdoor patio area that is also available for dining. The menu is on the pricier side but the quality, ingredients and flare definitely justify the cost. The atmosphere adds to that as well.

Don't see what all the fuss is about! It took weeks to finally be able to get a table at this place without over an hour wait. OK see here is what I think in a nutshell, Yes the food is decent but ridiculously over priced for what you get. The staff were friendly and welcoming The drink menu is themed well but again over priced. Would I recommend it & say the food is good? Yes, Will I go back? At those prices absolutely not you can get far better Mexican food in South Philly for a quarter of the price, I'd rather take a 10 minute drive & save myself a huge chunk of change than pay those prices again.

La Calaca fills a noticeable absence on Fairmount avenue: it isn't just another bar or byob. La Calaca has a great interior space, really stunning, great outside seating that is quiet and removed from the street. The best part is how the bar and open kitchen kind of define a whole space up front, and only by walking through a narrow hall does the main dining area open up. It's quite dramatic. As for the food and drink, Calaca serves a good taco. It's a generous size, although you pay for it. The tequila menu is okay, not as thorough as Cantina, but nice. All the prices are a bit higher than comparable Mexican places. The entrees I didn't get a chance to try, but they look really good.

Best garden. Best happy hour. Best mushroom tacos. Not the best prices--be prepared to shell out a pretty penny to dine and drink here--but that's why the happy hour is so great; low prices and same great quality. Ask for a spicy mango margarita--even though it's not on the menu, they'll make it, and make it well. The pizza with truffle and an egg is delish, great guac, and did I mention the greatest mushroom tacos on the planet? I'm also obsessed with the octopus skewers. The garden is gorgeous and a nice respite from the city, and services is almost always excellent.

Food was great, service was rude (it's Philly, try and find where I have ever reviewed a restaurant in Philly where the service wasn't rude). Let me note the service was a bit less than rude which is shocking and on a Philly scale might even be, dare I say, nice? Anyway, enjoyed my experience and liked the restaurant for sure

The short version: burnt cauliflower and dry pork aren't great fillings for tacos. The longer version: I ordered the cauliflower tacos, my husband ordered the special pork tacos, per the waitresses recommendation and we decided to start with the asparagus tlayudas (flatbread). The flatbread was okay - there wasn't a real balance of flavors, could have used some citrus and a fresh element, but generally okay. Then came the tacos, oh dear. My husband's pork tacos were dry and under seasoned. Then there were my tacos. Should I even call them that? In each uncooked taco shell were three burnt pieces of cauliflower some equally burnt nopales (cactus) and a sprinkle of what I could only imagine was the salsa and guacamole. They were terrible but I was starving, so I ate them. The good news, is that they didn't kill me. The bad news is that they will never see us again. You can't burn all the main ingredients or under season them and then bring them to the table and say "TADA its dinner!" Definitely not again.

Expensive! Hubby and I got only entrees and paid way too much. The chicken enchiladas with mole sauce were just okay. They forgot to put in my order of refried beans, which was also mediocre when I finally got it. I was rooting for a great Mexican spot in the neighborhood but was disappointed.

  • Alex U.

Amazing. That about sums things up for me. Seriously, it's hard to know where to even start, but I'll just mention that the tacos are WAY bigger than you might imagine (and better than any other tacos I've had in Philly), and every dish tastes fantastic. My biggest problem with this restaurant is that it's TOO good- it's hard to get motivated to think about dinner at home with this gem a few blocks away.

Mexican cuisine often makes me nervous. Too frequently it means plates piled high with sticky rice and refried beans; stringy, sinewy meat, slathered with goopy sauce, loosely bound by greasy wheat tortillas. Whether or not this is "authentic" Mexican, is not my problem. However, the notion of "fancy Mexican" food can seem something of an oxymoron. It is, inherently, a comfort food, with arguably no ambitions of a higher calling. But for me, the art of good Mexican cuisine is in the balance. And masters of this craft walk the line between tactful elegance and honest humility. La Calaca Feliz has mastered this balance. My girlfriend and I were running low. Five hours of shopping on a post-Christmas Saturday had us drained of just about everything. I live in the Art Museum area and I've been meaning to try out the relatively new neighborhood addition La Calaca Felix for some time. Now was that time. We were famished enough not to care about the danger of refried beans and triple cheese chimichangas. Bring it on. We were immediately impressed by the décor and service. The bar is inviting and stylish. The dining room is warm and tastefully thematic. Our waitress was an oracle. She knew what we wanted before we did. So far, so good. We started with a round of Mezcal drinks, which for me, sparked fuzzy memories of dark alleys in Tijuana. The Pork Belly Gordita paved serious inroads into the meaning of life. Talk about a fantastic medley of mysterious flavors mixed with fresh classic ingredients. The Pulpo (octopus) skewers were on par with the best octopus in the city (I've had them all). And the Duck confit stuffed jalapenos were original and bold. The Baja Fish Taco's were buttery, flaky morsels of fun. My only critique would be that the tilapia should have been baked instead of fried. The Carnitias (pulled pork) Tacos were petite little pockets of pure perfection. Again, the freshness of the ingredients was impossible to miss, and the corn tortillas were a nice, authentic touch. The wine selection was very nice. We enjoyed a fantastically spicy La Rioja Tampranillo, which perfectly complimented every flavor of our meal. Neither of us are particularly desert people, but we didn't want the meal to end. The warm chocolate cake with spicy fudge drizzle was delightful. La Calaca Feliz has found the balance. The food is exquisite. The service is stellar. The atmosphere is fun. And the price tag was a relief. If you're ever in the mood to be pleasantly surprised, I'd highly recommend La Calaca Feliz. El Vez and Distrito may have the trendy chefs and flashy décor, but La Calaca Feliz has the food. I'll see you there.

Fish tacos were unreal as were the meatball appetizers. Sangria and fresh fruit margaritas were so delicious. We really enjoyed our entire meal and will have to go back since we were too full for dessert!

This place was overpriced and completely unsatisfying mexican food. Got the chicken in mole sauce and fish tacos - both were pretty unsatisfying. The blood orange margarita was just okay. It was very dark and too loud. I can't believe how packed it was for how blah the food was. Great decor though. I hear they have good outdoor seating when the weather is nice. I'd give it another shot for a happy hour maybe but definitely not dinner.

This place is amazing... Mexican food meets art food. Great apps as well as amazing carnitas. Definitely will be going back. Only reason I left off one star is because I was not too impressed with the fish tacos. One big piece of fish with really thick breading. Would be nice if there was a grilled option.

Beautiful atmosphere, amazing selection of tequilas and delicious margaritas. I had the fish tacos and they were excellent. The aioli sauces combined with the meaty talapia melts in your mouth. My friend and I also shared the fried sweet plantains and the ice cream sundae for dessert and were completely satisfied with everything we had! Would definitely go back again :)

Hands down the best contemporary Mexican food in Philly. Don't expect huge, heavy burritos - La Calaca specializes in lighter dishes full of flavor. The fish tacos are absolutely incredible.

We tried this place on a Saturday night as per a friend's recommendation, and I'm glad we did. The place is a bit unassuming from the outside, but quite large and accommodating. We had a group of 7 and despite it being packed, we were seated immediately. The server was very friendly and very knowledgeable. Portions were generous, and after sharing appetizers, I was kind of full by the time my entree arrived. The margaritas were also good and went down easy. All in all, it was a great experience. I recommend it and I'm sure we'll be back.

Their food is phenomenal! Randomly discovered it while walking to the art museum and have been going back since. Their nachos are delicious. My favorite is the mushroom tlayuda although they do not offer all year. Currently they have the brussel sprout tlayuda, but is not up to par with the mushroom one. I am not a seafood person but have tried the fish tacos and now they are a regular at La Calaca. Definitely recommend La Calaca Feliz to everyone!

ok, I went back this weekend with some out of town friends and we sat in one of the booths. I like the seats in the booths. We had the Oyster Special that the staff had on a friday. I forget what the ingredients were. I think there was some celery. I'm not sure. Either way, they Oysters were awesome. Might be the best I've ever had. Might I suggest a buck a shuck happy hour on top of their late night happy hour? That would be fantastic. I got the flank steak dish and it was fantastic. Flank steak was cooked perfectly and had just the right amount of iron-ey taste that good flank steaks have. The chimichurri was great and the refried beans were the best I've ever had. I normally avoided them at Cantina feliz because i dont like refried beans much, but these were spicy and delicious, not your "old el paso" canned beans. My fiance told me that these are the same beans they have at Cantina Feliz, so it looks like i've missed out on this stuff for the better part of a year, which sucks. My friends got the flank steak and the bass. The one guy normally doesnt get fish, but after a few bites, he said it was the best fish he's ever had. This place is hitting its stride. Even Ed Rendell was there with his latest flavor of the week.

Had a great time at dinner Friday night! I'll definitely return. Things we loved: Drinks: The cocktail list has a nice variety of specialty items named for Grateful Dead songs. In the end, we went for the house margaritas. They were really fresh tasting, none of that sticky overly syrupy from a bottle pre-made mix. Not too strong, but definitely a hit! Food: We started with the guac. Decent portion, perfect for three to share. It was creamy, yet still had decent "chunks" of avocado. Chips were good and crunchy. For dinner, my boyfriend opted for the vegetable tacos with eggplant, squash and potatoes. They are served three to an order on small flour tortillas. My friend and I then shared the chicken enchilada and the fish tacos. The enchilada was good, but would have been better had we not requested sauce on the side. The verde sauce was my favorite. It was a little thicker than I've had in the past, but was fresh tasting with a nice subtle kick. The mole was ok, but had a hint of anise that I didn't really care for as it overwhelmed the chocolatey flavor I love about mole. The fish tacos were phenomenal! I feel like I'm often disappointed by fish tacos because they're either all beer-batter in flavor or no crunch and all fish. La Calaca Feliz gets it right on the money. The batter is made with tortilla and plantain chips so it's crunchy and full of flavor, but the fish stays moist and flavorful inside. I could not recommend them more! I also had a side of sweet plantains -- nice balance between the sweetness of the plantains and the salty queso fresco. Atmosphere: They're really done a great job with the interior. The murals are awesome, the teal/pool blue wall color is bright and cheery. Illuminaire's dining room often felt uncomfortable, like you were dining on display. Somehow, with a few tweaks to the seating layout, it's now really cozy. Things we didn't love: The transformation of the nook in the front into a waiting area was a great idea. I'd love to see some slim stools in the area so you could sit and wait. Also some hooks for coats/bags would keep the slip bar that borders the area free for drinks and appetizers. The bar service was not as strong at the dining area. They were just a little less approachable and inviting. Overall, great food and drinks, awesome spot, and the service was spot-on (Margaret was fantastic and answered a ridiculous amount of questions!). They definitely planned carefully in order to have a successful launch, and it shows!

This restaurant was seriously impressive. Everything was completely delicious: the guacamole, the flatbread, the cocktails, some beef taco thing... extremely good food and priced fairly for high end Mexican. The sundae thing with the caramel corn... eh. Not as amazing as some reviews led me to believe. But totally edible. The dining room is attractive with a Velasquez-like mural. It's modern and approachable while remaining warm and neighborhoody. I sent my parents here and they really liked it as well. The service was excellent. I told the server that "I can't eat egg," by which I only meant that I find it gross. So they put some hard boiled egg pico de gallo on the side for my friend. But the waitress came back a few minutes later presenting the chef's concern that I had a dairy allergy, as some of the other food had dairy. That's so nice! Way to look out for your diners. This restaurant must prosper because it is awesome and close to my house. Go there. Love it. This is absolutely the restaurant Fairmount needed.

Their benedict is the strangest benedict ever. I'm sure for some one that likes whatever was in it, it would be good. However, if you are looking for a traditional benedict, this is not the place to have it.

Very innovative Mexican food up in the art museum district. Much better than the run of the mill Mexican stuff. Vegetables, fish, etc. Small courtyard is fun and skylights in the main dining room keep it light and airy.

I went on a Monday and ordered the Carnitas Tacos (the special that day) with a can of beer for only $10. The food is great and reasonably priced. The only downside was the service. The restaurant wasn't very crowded yet server was very slow to come over and introduce himself, slow to return with the drinks, and slow to take our orders. This is not a place to grab a "quick" bite.

A yummy mexican restaurant that offers great and tasty mexican fare. The guacamole is delicious and offered in a cute pig bowl! They offer all sorts of tasty drinks. If you like mexican food than go here NOW. If you are not a fan, then this restaurant won't change your mind. My only complaint is that it's small and it got loud, but people were enjoying themselves. A great place!

Delicious food and great location. The chorizo appetizer is amazing and you really can't go wrong with any of the appetizers. The margaritas are good, but nothing special. Servers have always been friendly and quick. Definitely recommend getting a reservation on the weekend since the dining area is small.

My husband and I dined here for the first time last night. I took him for his birthday and we LOVED it! You have to have a reservation! Do not try to go without one. I thankfully made a reservation and we got there about 15 minutes early so we were at the bar having a margarita, and people kept walking in asking for a table with no reservation and we heard "it's about a 2 hour wait..".. so make that reservation! The table that was "ours" was taking a little longer than expected and the manager came up to us at the bar and said that it would just be a few more minutes, etc, at apologized for the wait (although he really didnt need to, it was 5 mins, maybe, but it was such a nice gesture). We got seated, had their good guacamole, I had pulled pork tacos and my husband had the fish tacos. Both were great and we recommend them! We then had "dessert" of a shot of 1800 tequila, which came in fancy little glasses which was fun. While we were seated, the same nice manager that I mentioned before, was asking people to move away from the large door/window (which I assume is open when the patio is open but this night it was raining).. and we were wondering why? But it was to give access to a women in a wheelchair to get into the restaurant. It topped off my first impression as a good one!! :) The restaurant is also decorated very cute and had a fun and casual yet nice vibe!

I'd like to do 4 1/2 stars for La Calaca Feliz, because we really only had one minor complaint. So happy to have a really good mexican place in the neighborhood. The food was great, the service was awesome and the only complaint we had was that the dining area is really loud. It must be something to do with how it's designed because it's big enough, but it's hard to hear everyone at your table. But honestly, this won't keep us from coming back. The courtyard is small but great during good weather. Well done!

Been there with the kids multiple times- always accommodating. The food is top notch- authentic, nice sized portions, always super fresh. Garces quality without leaving the neighborhood. Service is attentive- especially with kids. Drinks- only had a few- put many are made with Espolon, which is a current favorite. Great variety of drinks on menu, even if you're not a tequila person. I don't think they do reservations, which isn't a big deal. Hanging at bar (minus the kids of course) is great to people watch and grab a first course. Definitely pricey for neighborhood prices- but the deliver on quality and service consistently. Worth a splurge. A good friend says the takeout nachos are awesome. Gonna have to try it. Request seating on the back patio.

Had a great time here with a group of friends. The tequila flights are fun. The drink made with cucumber is out. of. this. world. So dangerous and delicious. I had some kind of steak that was cooked perfectly. Really enjoyed the peppers that came with it. They are not afraid of spice! Guacamole was also delicious. Bonus for a super cute nerd girl server who was able to handle a little haggling and harassment from our friend with humor. Also the hostess with the black hair has a super cute haircut, but I got tipsy and forget to ask her who did it. If you see this la calaca feliz hostess with the black hair and cute bob haircut, hmu!

Feliz margarita (tequila, fresh lime, orange liquor)--I wanted to skip the orange liquor but learned that the drink is premixed. I was surprised. Good drink, nonetheless. If you want Mexican coke (no high fructose syrup), you have to specify. Otherwise you will get the good ol' American coke from the fountain machine. Elote (Corn on the cob) is so delicious! Definitely recommend as a side or a starter. Side of plantains---1 whole plantain cut in 3 parts. A tad small for the price. Fish tacos--delicious. crunchy, picked slaw cuts through the fried fish nicely. comes with two dipping sauces (an avocado crema and a spicy mayo). Good size, reasonably priced. Flank steak--loved it. the refried beans were surprisingly different than the versions I've had before. dish comes with a side of warm corn tortillas. It was a decent amount of meat, no doubt. But I still think it's a tad overpriced. Domingo sunday--great combination of brownie, churros ice cream, and caramel popcorn. The dish is topped with additional melted caramel, which i loved. Nice to share. The presentation of the food is simple, as is the ambiance and overall setting. They don't even use cloth napkins. Hence why I found some of the entree dishes to be a tad overpriced ($20-$23). The decor is a little Tequila-ish with the whole Dia de los Muertos theme. I would definitely go back to try more dishes, particularly as the weather warms up. I saw a patio!!! It is also nice to have a good Mexican restaurant in the Fairmount/Art Museum area. Overall, good/flavorful food; simply presented. Yet a tad overpriced.

I'm not sure why this restaurant only has 4 stars on Yelp - it is definitely deserving of all 5. I have been to La Calaca Feliz on multiple occasions and have never, EVER had a dish that wasn't outstanding. The servers are friendly, knowledgeable about the food and the menu and offer the perfect level of attention. The hamachi tostada and hiramasa are my favorite appetizers, with tons of perfectly-balanced flavor and freshness. My favorite entrees are the seafood enchiladas or the black bass- it's easy to see why Craig LaBan said it may be his favorite fish entree anywhere- which is obviously a serious compliment to La Calaca Feliz's chef, Tim Spinner. The tres leches for dessert is a light, delicious end to a great meal every time. This is the perfect restaurant for a date, a casual night out, or a special occasion. The atmosphere is great and the food can't be beat. They don't take reservations, so you may have to spend a little time in the bar (try one of the fantastic cocktails!) but the food is well worth the wait.

my friend and I were lookin for a Mexican place for dinner last night. Yelp suggested La Calaca Feliz as the best choice in the art museum area. I have to say it was pretty good. I ordered fish tacos which was very aesthetically presented and tasted wonderful. The tilapia fish was fried nicely into a soft taco with the other filling. it had a good mix of texture and taste along. My friend and I shared this corn on the Cobb appetizer that was seasoned very nicely and tasted delicious. They also had a good selection of local and imported beer that went well with the meal. Our servers were very outgoing and helpful. I will come back again.

I met a girlfriend for drinks and appetizers last week and really loved what they have done with this place. This restaurant is what used to be the old Illuminare in the Art Museum area, but a new owner has come in and changed it to a traditional Mexican restaurant. I had these tasty little stuffed meatballs as an appetizer - I can't remember what they were called on the menu but they were awesome! Stuffed with cheese and spices and mmmmm, they were good. There were six mini meatballs which was more than enough for one person. The chef also sent us a complimentary order of the tostada appetizer, which was also fresh and full of flavor. The atmosphere is fun and lively and the front area is a bar which is a great place to meet friends and hang out. My friend had the fish tacos and she loved them. I will go back to this place and try more things. It's only been open for 3 weeks but already it was hustling and bustling. Afterwards we met some people at another local rest. and they also heard good things about it. This is exactly what the neighborhood needed! A little spice in life :) The owner even came out and said hello to us and asked us how everything was. Very personable atmosphere. The bartender was also sweet and helpful, no pretentious attitudes at this place. Love it!

Fantastic restaurant! YUM! Had a sampling of a variety of apps, including the guac (with appples!), some flatbread pizzas (mushroom was my favorite), duck meatballs (outta this world). Excellent salsas, be sure to try the habernero! the black Bass was amazing. Make sure you save room for dessert, the ice cream sundae with Carmel corn will blow your mind! Awesome ambience. Can't wait till greenhouse is built outside with additional seating. Great service Will be back very soon! Go here!!!

I can't tell you how the food was cos I didn't get any! My boyfriend & I wanted to try this place this weekend, and I tried to get a reservation, but was told on the phone that they don't take reservations for under 6 people. The woman did offer that I could put my name down for a table about a half hour before we intended to go, so I said I'd call back. Called back later at about 7:30 and was told that the wait was 2 hours long. 9:30 pm is way late for dinner, so obviously had to ditch it--wish I was given at least an inkling that the wait time could run that long. The next day, we decided to just show up. Walked in and were told the wait was 45 minutes to an hour. We certainly didn't want to wait that long (this is the Art Museum area, not Center City!) So I asked the host how to go about it since they don't take reservations for two people. All he could offer was that they do allow us to put down our names. I said we'd tried it the day before, and the wait was an incredibly long two hours. Got a halfhearted sorry. You'd think especially when you're a new restaurant in the neighborhood, you would try to keep customers coming and make some effort to accommodate those who express a special interest to try it? And why would you not take reservations for under 6 people if you're that busy? Just based on their inability to be accommodating to customers, I'm certainly not going back!

It's always great to find a new mexican spot in a part of town that doesn't have many of them. The location is good, our waitress was fantastic, the space is fun and pretty big. I got the white sangria as a drink which was good but probably a tad too sweet for my taste. The sweet platains were nice with a bit too much queso fresco on top. The chorizo tacos were a tad lacking in flavor. The duck confit stuffed jalapenos were spicy but really nicely balanced by the pomegranate seeds. Finally the tres leches cake was really good, perhaps a unevenly dry in certain places, but still really good. I tried a little bit of the gfs jicama salad and ceviche which were also good. Prices are reasonable too!

This is by FAR my favorite place to go in Fairmount. I have never ordered anything I didn't like, they always have good specials and they're drinks are reasonably priced. The service is always impicable and very friendly. As far as mexican goes, they've set the bar for me.

Ambiance is great and the place is a lot bigger than it looks! The decor is also really nice - you can tell a lot of thought went into each and every detail. We didn't know what to expect since we kind of just "stumbled" upon the resturant. Being Mexican cuisine lovers and living in Fairmount we were so excited to find it! Since we didn't have any expectations we were pleasantly surprised. The food is moderately priced - entrees $15-$20 (not cheap tex/mex but not overly priced considering the presentation and quality of food). We opted for the specials and were surprised to see that the portions weren't as big as most Mexican restaurants (with loads of beans and rice) but Thank Goodness! That's exactly what we wanted - good quality food not overloaded with bloated sides. We felt that the entrees had a great unique flavor and prepared perfectly. All in all, the food was great but the dessert was to DIE for (chocolate flourless cake with bananas and ice cream)! Amazing!!! Welcome to the neighborhood - we will definitely be back and bringing some friends. Can't wait til summer for the outside deck to be open! Thanks!

I had dinner there last night and it was a great meal and experience. The server we had was friendly and very knowledgable. She recommended we do the Tasing Menu ($29) since neither of us had been before and it was fantastic. We both loved everything that was prepared for us. Also, the Garcia Margarita was possibly the BEST margarita I have every had and I always order a margarita when having Mexican. The atmospher of the restaurant is really quaint and cozy. I really liked it. I recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning!

This restaurant was alright. I wouldn't be too eager to go back. I thought the food was a bit overpriced for what it was. The nacho appetizer was actually really good, as were the drinks. But the entrees were a bit underwhelming and the service could have been quicker.

Had a great dinner there. The outstanding food was closely challenged by the friendly and attentive staff (I don't think my glass ever reached empty without already having been asked for a refill). You can't go wrong with the arranchera.

I've only been here for happy hour, but I had a good experience. Their deal is $2 off most drinks including a great margarita and beer list, Monday-Friday 5-7pm. I had a few appetizers as well. Their nachos were great and their chips, if not homemade, at least taste like it. Great salsa and good guac go a long way with me at Mexican restaurants. My friend had the Elotes Loco, which is basically corn on the cob covered with lime mayo and cheese. Apparently it was amazing. The bar area is a little small, but if you can get a seat its a nice spot. My only complaint was that their standard 'Feliz' margarita was made before-hand and it kind of tasted like it. Still pretty tasty, just not as fresh as you'd want your margarita to be.

Hamachi Ceviche was good... reminded me of the ceviche I had at Mama's Fish house in Hawaii (which is a must). Can't complain no wait, served immediately, waitress didn't bother us too much and the food was good.

The food, margaritas, and wait staff were excellent. My wife had the duck tacos which were made with fresh ingredients (accentuated with pomegranate seeds) and I had the black bass -- both dishes were very good. We also tried the chorizo fundido and found it to be quite yummy.

Definitely one of the best fish tacos I have ever had. The food in general was pretty outstanding but I have to say I was surprised by the sub-par quality of the drinks. they were not well crafted and need to be improved

7:10, the bf and I decide we want to try La Calaca Feliz for dinner/drinks. I suggest calling to make a reservation and he says, "Ehh it's okay, we'll get in." I insist on calling and at 7:10, the hostess told me there was an hour and 45 minute wait!!! Holy smokes. She put our name on the waiting list then, which was great. We arrived and the bar was absolutely packed. I mean there was NO WHERE to stand without getting trampled by guests/servers. It wasn't hard to get a drink, just sooo cramped there was no where to stand. The feliz margarita and red sangria were both really good..and strong! We were seated after about 15 minutes. The dining room was FREEZING. I felt a cold breeze coming from somewhere and kept my jacket on my lap as a blanket. The food came out quickly and it was quite tasty. We noticed that every other table in the entire restaurant had chips and salsa. After we finished our ceviche and still had no chips, the bf asked the table next to us if they ordered the chips or if they just came with the meal. The girls said the chips and salsa came with the meal and they didn't order them. So we asked our waitress if we could have some chips and salsa, which she brought us promptly. We enjoyed the taco vegetal and black bass entree. Both were fantastic...we couldn't decide which we liked better. Excellent quality, perfectly cooked. We got the bill and apparently, the chips and salsa weren't included! I guess it was our decision to request them, but it was just surprising that we were somehow the only people in the entire restaurant that didn't order them. It's very loud and the tables are pretty close together (but tables are long so you are far away from your dining partner) so don't expect to have an intimate conversation. But the food and drinks were quite good!!

If I had a complaint it would be that the bar is too small. We were seated on time for our reservation and our waitress was well seasoned and efficient. The house margaritas are delicious. Both ceviche appetizers offered on the menu are awesome. The fish tacos entree came with 2 tacos which were fresh and tasty. A restaurant well worth revisiting!

Yay! So excited to finally have a mexican place in fairmount that has a liquor license! The ambiance is really unique and bright! Definitely personable. I went on a Sunday with a rather large group of people and disappointed that you couldn't get margaritas by the pitchers but you could get sangria by the pitcher. That just seems backwards. The marg I got was $8 and was delicious! The salsa and guac were amazing! We also got the campechano tlayuda appitezier (shortrib taco). It came with 3 tacos which were delicious, esp with some salsa on them. The brownie sundae with churro ice cream and caramel popcorn was AMAZING! The popcorn came in big chunks, which was hard to eat with everything else. But when you broke apart the chunks and got a bite of all three, holy moly! It was sweet, rich, salty perfection! Can't wait to go back! One weird thing was to get to the bathroom from the bar you have to walk through the kitchen 'run' area. For some reason, the staff stops and stares at you. EVERY TIME! It was SUPER awkward. Everyone in our party commented on the odd behavior. Luckily by my 4th margarita I stopped caring if they were judging all my trips to the bathroom. I definitely recommend checking this place out. They don't take reservations and have been on a wait recently. Bar seats about 12 but has a little standing room area toward the front (perfect for our group of 10-15). We were told they're redoing the old outside area to be a bar! Can't wait to check that out!

Upscale Mexican-fusion restaurant in Fairmount area. Hamachi Ceviche was delicious. Fish tacos were excellent. Chorizo fundido was awesome Campechano Tlayuda hit the spot. Great assortment of tequilas to try as well. Only knock were the flour tortillas instead of corn (you can ask for corn instead).

I have nothing, but positive things to say about La Calaca Feliz. On a Saturday night we were looking to grab some dinner, and figured this place would be booked, but walked over anyway. The wait time was about 30 minutes, but we grabbed seats at the bar and started working on a pitcher of sangria. It was tasty, and served about 8 drinks. in honor of the new Barnes, they were having a Fairmount restaurant week, and we all decided to go that route. $30 for 3 courses. I had the hamachi ceviche, which was fresh, and acidic, with creamy pieces of avocado on top. We also shared an order of the guacamole with fruit. It was really good. The salsa served at the table was underwhelming, a little too smoky for my group. Next, I had the seafood enchilada. By this time, I was pretty much stuffed, so I only took a few bites and saved the rest to take home. It made for an excellent breakfast the next morning. Dessert was flourless chocolate cake which was also taken home. My friends had the crab fundido, which was rich and delicious, and also I tasted the mushroom tacos which had lots of truffly goodness. We stuck with sangria the whole night, so I'll have to go back and try a margarita. Although, I wasn't able to eat that much, everything was delicious, and I'm looking forward to going back.

This place has great food and a nice atmosphere. My complaint is I've had mixed experiences with service. The last time I ate dinner here I called ahead but still had to within an hour to be seated. The restaurant did give us free chips though. Also they forgot to give my husband's drink until after the entrees arrived and still charged us for it. Still, I'd return because the food is good.

I've been here for drinks, happy hour, and dinner and have never been disappointed. The margaritas are potent and tasty. The guacamole is fantastic and I think the short rib nachos (on the happy hour menu) are the best nachos I've ever had. The bar is intimate and cozy (aka small) so I wouldn't go with more than 2-3 people but the restaurant has a nice dining space and has an outdoor patio as well so if you have a large group just make a reservation and I think they could accommodate you. The service has been great anytime I've gone. The red-headed bartender makes great drinks and seems very knowledgeable. I recommend the margaritas and the Cumberland...it's like a mojito with a Mexican twist. Some reviews said the food was pricey but you can taste the quality. If you want to save a couple bucks, go to happy hour. They have a good selection of small plates to try (the nachos are large enough for a meal). Overall this is one of the best restaurants in Fairmount.

We had a delightful evening at this trendy little restaurant in the quaint open-air courtyard at the back. Our waiter was attentive and helpful, and his appetizer recommendations, the fresh guacamole and hamanchi ceviche, we're superb! All of our entrees were delicious, but our favorite was the Baja fish tacos (with creamy cilantro aioli)! We also ordered pepinos, marinated cucumbers, Fresno chili's, garnished with mint, and served in a Greek yogurt sauce. This tart & pungent medley reminded us of the bright flavorful contrasts we love in Thai food, but be forewarned, for the meek of palate, the Fresno chili's are best left on the serving dish as a garnish. We finished our wonderful meal with another excellent recommendation from our waiter, a 'Domingo' Sundae and three spoons. The 'Domingo' is a new twist to the traditional chocolate brownie sundae. La Calaca 'kicks' this old standard up several notches by adding heavily caramelized & deliciously crunchy popcorn to the mix. Our family dove in, and though we resisted the temptation to order another, we scraped the sides of the serving bowl clean with our spoons. Our family highly recommends La Calaca Feliz, and we certainly left with very happy bones, and the knowledge that we would return soon.

Really great neighborhood spot in a quiet residential area. Elegant atmosphere, friendly service and fantastic margaritas. Their elotes were finger-lickin' good and the chicken mole entree was the best I've ever had (chicken was amazingly moist with crisp skin on it just the way I like it!) Next time I'm in Philly I would love to come back here.

Had a late lunch/early dinner for a co-workers birthday and was really impressed by how smooth things seem to be here after just a few days. Great tequila selection and delicious sangria. Food highlights included fish tacos and an ice cream sundae featuring caramel corn. Packed at 5 pm, a few too many babies for my taste, but that's my fault for eating dinner at 5 pm.

Just checked this place out for the first time last night and we will most definitely be back! The food is very very tasty! We had the black bass entree, the nachos, the hiramasa ceviche, and the plantains and were extremely satisfied. The ambiance is awesome - with a very chill, but elegant vibe and we actually had the pleasure of trying the porch AND the inside (because we got a bit chilly out there) and both experiences were AWESOME. Big props to our server, Megan who was really great! So glad you're in the hood, La Calaca!

Finally Fairmount has a unique restaurant to get excited about, with foodie-food, good music selection, and a fun atmosphere/decor. I've been here twice now and every single app/dish has been amazing. My only complaint (and very minor) was that when I ordered a Yards Pale Ale it wasn't served as a pint as it's intended to be (they're cheaping out).

Here's the good from our visit yesterday -- the female bartender was a pro, and also helpful. And a good happy hour, from 4 to 6 pm, according to the menu, was a very good beginning. The small bar and tables area was crowded, deservedly so! Also, the bright murals and wall painting were cheerful, even with those calacas, and helped promote an upbeat air. So that was the good. Once in the big dining room (that can't avoid looking like the former restaurant, Illuminaire), the service was of that ready-to-rush-you variety that backs off when you say you don't want to be rushed, but somehow always seems to be lurking around anyway. To most people that might not be bad, however. Onto the food: My curse is to have had mole poblano a few times in Mexico several decades ago. It was different each time, but had some basic similarities; and it was fabulous. It was particularly awesome on some pork in a blue-collar eatery in Mexico City. So I have hunted for something akin to it in Mexican restaurants in the U.S. ever since, but without success. La Calaca Feliz didn't get there, either. The chicken mole poblano was not bad, and the chicken breast was nicely presented in thick, round slices like a tenderloin filet, but the mole poblano was more like chocolate Fairmontano. There was spice, there was chocolate, but it was not the real deal. Don't ask me why not, if I knew the secret, I would have been making it myself. My own tries have been no better. We also had a crab fundido appetizer, and it too was just OK, nothing bad, nothing great. With tip, an $80 bill for two with some drinks. Not good enough to want to repeat, I'm sorry to say, but I might go for the happy hour again.

Service and food presentation were excellent! We had to make special arrangements to accommodate our party and La Calaca Feliz added an extra table to our circle to make that possible. Intimate environment with fun, colorful wall art and decor. Our friends continue to ask how we found such a great spot. We will return for certain!

Terrific early evening meal last Saturday. The variety and depth of tastes and flavors are what make dining out so worthwhile. Guacamole and chips to start were delicious, and the grilled shrimp and mole poblano entrees were fantastic. Spicy chocolate cake was a perfect topper to the meal. Great beer list. Tequila and margarita offerings looked good, though we didn't go down that road. Back patio was delightful and server, Liz, was great. She was intuitively responsive without being obtrusive, and helped make for a very pleasant experience.

Delicious margaritas! Save yourself the extra few bucks and just go with their house margarita ($7.50) unless you just want to try something new. The nachos and tacos were delicious. I'd have given it 5 stars but the desserts weren't that great... We tried two, the brownie popcorn thing and cake... Tasty but wouldn't get them again.

For vegetarians....the mushroom tacos and the squash tacos have excellent flavor but the portions are small. You get three small tacos on each of these entrees which would probably be filling if they were meat based, but the vegetable choices are not so substantial for the price. I think 4 of these tacos would be a better value and wouldn't cost the restaurant more than a few cents with the small corn tortilla and dabble of vegetables. That said, they taste pretty amazing. The seating on the back patio is kind of uncomfortable because it consists of those square 4-top patio tables that are supported by legs that sit under the edge where your legs would rest. So you're forced to straddle this beam or sit to either side of it which creates some imbalance. The folding chair legs sadly contribute to this discomfort. Now for the rice and beans....pretty bland unless you consider just plain old salt to be gourmet seasoning. The rice doesn't live up to the same level of delicate quality as the tacos and frankly could almost be mistaken for Uncle Bens. I like that the menu is concise and for the ratio of other vegetarian options to non-veg options, I was pretty pleased with that part of the experience. The decor and ambiance indoors and out was aesthetically pleasing and designed with good flow and a high end feel. The wait staff we encountered were all very hospitable and genuine from hostess to bus boy to server. All in all I'm giving this a high rating despite my complaints because there isn't a lot of good Mexican food in Philadelphia and the chefs really do know how to flavor the food here. The value isn't quite there for me but I guess when we're talking Fairmount restaurants that are trying to attract a real bourgeois crowd, then I sorta get why but still think it sucks. This is Philly we're talking about here and they could bulk up the portion a bit for that price.

This place was great! I ordered the nachos and fish tacos to share with my boyfriend. We thought the food was well balance- not greasy or overly topped with sour cream, cheese, etc. They both had delicate pieces of light and spicy and creaminess without an overabundance of each. I thought the pricing was not bad either. In comparison to Isabela's, it was a bit cheaper, the food was superior, and the ambience a lot better (this place is a place for hanging out- if in bar).

It was my first time coming here. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. I have to admit it was weird that you have to walk almost to the middle of the resturaunt to find the hostess However, she was all smiles. Our wait was 45 minutes since we did not make a reservation. My party and I decided to head to the bar and have some drinks to pass the time. The hostess remembered what my party looked like which was nice because she just came right over to get us. Our server Lauren couldn't have been more fun and knowledgeable about the food la Calica Feliz had to offer. Their chips are made in house and their signature salsa was so tasty I had to take it home. We ordered the nachos for our appetizer. The beef in this dish is what made it shine. It was so tender like a roast beef almost. Finally for my entree I got the mushroom tacos. Woah baby! I will be coming back for more. They were fragrant, refreshing and I loved that there were several types of mushrooms in it. I highly recommend to come here even if you don't live in the Fairmount area.

Walked past this place with the lady and was determined to have dinner there soon. First off they do have really good drinks and their bar staff was very attentive. I started with the Duck En Nogada which was excellent! Then for dinner the Enchilada Con Pollo with green chile sauce. I wasn't crazy about the enchilada as it seemed a bit cold and was covered with massive amounts of sour cream (my fault for not asking for it on the side) Also we were seated at the bar for dinner due to the long wait and decided to eat there. Make sure you reserve your table if you plan on eating here on a Friday night! I saw a lot of unhappy faces at the bar waiting for a table. My lady enjoyed her meal but was not happy that we were not given at least nachos to munch on while waiting for our food to arrive. Guess that's reserved for table diners only. I'll be trying this place again as the good service and quality of the food made up for the things I didn't enjoy. I'll be sure to order the sour cream on the side next time!

Crowded, loud, great decor. Hit or miss food. Very salty (?!) salad, decent tortilla soup, flatbreads ok. But great queso fundido. Prices seemed high on some of the more simple dishes. Will try again on a non-Friday night to see if some of my food complaints were just volume-related...

Everyone should have La Calaca Feliz on their culinary radar. I heard about La Calaca from a colleague who was in the know. The restaurant is charming and refreshingly casual fun, but don't let the casualness fool you and don't underestimate it's culinary prowess. The staff are very friendly and obviously well trained. Our server provided an overview of the menu and his favorite recommendations on the same level as any of Philly's more stuffy, fancy dining establishments. Everything was perfect from the specialty cocktails to the food. A must try are the unique margaritas. I had the blood orange margarita while my friends had the black currant margarita. Both were not your typical drink from a prepackaged bottle. They were the real deal made with fresh ingredients. My party of 5 selected a good cross section of entree items. Everyone raved. I had the fish tacos which were fabulous! The evening was topped off with desserts that are original and great. Anyone in the Philly area or visiting needs must dine at La Calaca Feliz. I rated La Calaca with 5 stars not just because of the great food, but because of the outstanding, authentic customer service.

This place is an absolute neighborhood gem. Good drinks and a great tequila selection. Very tasty food. On two different visits I've tried the tlayuda, nachos, guacamole, fish tacos, enchilada con mariscos and the sinfully delicious flourless chocolate cake. The guacamole is very good. A little on the creamier side, but still excellent. The tlayuda is off the chain good. The nachos could use some more filling in proportion to the amount of chips, but that's a minor quibble. Fish tacos are some of the best I've had and the enchiladas are just plain awesome. If you like hot stuff ask for a side of the house made habanero hot sauce. The service and management are top notch. We celebrated my wife's 35th birthday there tonight and were very happy with everything. Definitely worth checking out.

I'm a sucker for ambience, and this place has plenty of it. Vaulted ceilings, diagonal architecture and glass doors that open to an outdoor seating area -- all in beautiful Fairmount. Beautiful! GREAT service, too! But on to the food -- the pork tacos were unreal ~ SO delicious!! I want to go back just to have more. We also enjoyed the fish tacos (while very tasty, the fish part itself was almost a glorified, super sized fish stick, but the sauces and flavor were all very good -- I just prefer non-fried real fish in my fish tacos)...for apps we tried the ceviche (excellent!) and the campechano tylayuda (also phenomental!), and plenty of Feliz margaritas (happy hour until 7), which were good. Chips and salsa are also good (free and they give you two salsas - one is yummy and easy to eat, the other yummy and very spicy -- at least to me). Finally, dessert -- ice cream churros. Small but good, especially the chocolate bits in the ice cream. I'd love to go back and try more of popular dishes on the menu.

The food at La Calaca Feliz is sooooooooooooooooo good!!!!!!! My husband, and I have been here several times and the food has been consistently delicious. It is hard to say which items on the menu are our favorite because everything is really good. I love the Campechano Tyaluda. The short rib meat is delectable. The Black Bass entree is delicious. Wow! The Elotes Loco is really good too. The service has always been great. I can't wait until our next visit.

The food was good but nothing amazing. The drinks were ok but super sweet. The service was over whelming. They had so many people assisting my table (that was only myself and one other person) it seemed daunting. Also we had no silverware until we asked for a fork and were only given a fork. And only one napkin. Trying to leave was interesting. Extremely over crowded at the door to get out. People were eating what appeared to be meals while standing next to the door. Strange. However it was discovered after we arrived that it was restaurant week for the Fairmount area but still.

Uh oh, am I seeing things or does this place actually serve REAL Mexican food in Philly? I went here on a date last Thursday night and was very impressed! The decor of this establishment was modern, yet also had an old Southwestern/Mexican feel to it. Their "Carnitas Taco" comes dangerously close to the street tacos I used to eat down in Mexico and their guacamole dip....words alone can't describe how amazing it tastes! To accompany my meal, I also had a bottle of good ol' Mexican coke oh and also some tasty chipotle salsa dip! So why the 4 stars and not 5 stars? Well, since I'm a huge fan of spicy flavors, I was let down by how mild their salsas were! I even asked the helpful waitress whether she had something "spicier" and came back with habanero salsa. Hot right? Wrong! Ha! Ha! They must've mixed in a dash of habanero in there or something, because the spiciness wore off after 2-3 dips with their excellent tortilla chips (is this an East Coast thing?). Another aspect I must mention is, their dessert selection wasn't so great. Where's the Flan? Oh and one more thing, their tacos are not huge, as some previous reviewers have stated, I was still hungry afterwards!

short and simple, these guys know what is going on. Equal parts Tim Spinner and Brian Sirhal (Garces and cantina feliz fame) a handful of luccio palazzo (xotchil) and a dash of jimmy kengott (lolita) and you got an amazing f-ing mexican dream team. Ive had my share but their carnitas are trump for me in the city, crab fundido was bomb.com/delicious and the pulpo was out of this world, i could of used a few more grilled jalapeños but it was a banging dish. Bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable, always ready with a tecate or shot of hornitos. worst part of the night was that the sixers lost, but i don't think i can knock them a star for that. other dishes i really enjoyed were the tortilla soup, albondigas, and the guacamole is traditional and really flavorful, highlight as it should be is the avocado. small space, i recommend getting there early and snagging bar seats (unless its my night off and then i recommend you order out so i can snag said seats)

Ok food. Nice space. Fish tacos an interesting take and a very good. Pork tacos and guac not quite as good as most south philly tacquerias (or homemade), and considering the cost those are better hands down. All in all too Stephen Starr-ish for my liking (not that its his place...).

  • Joyce K.

I thought it was way over priced. The food was okay, but not much of it. I found it strange that I could not get a frozen margarita and the glasses were not margarita glasses. The service was good and people friendly, but the cost was not justified, in my opinion. I would not go back. It's a shame, as there are not Mexican places in Fairmount with a bar.

We love when new restaurants come to Fairmount/Art Museum so when we saw this was opening, we jumped at the chance to try it. We started off with drinks. I had a margarita and it was tasty and not overly sweet. For appetizer we got guacamole, I cannot have Mexican without guac but I hate when its like $10 but it doesnt stop me. It was good, but the one I make is probably just as good if not better. I had the fish tacos and a side of Mexican corn. Both were super tasty. It also wasn't too expensive. Will definitely go back.

My 17-year old son and had dinner at La Calaca Feliz after attending a show at nearby St. Joe's Prep school on a Saturday night. The show ran longer than expected and we were 45 minutes late for our reservation. The staff could not have been more gracious. We were seated immediately and made to feel like welcome guests even though we caused havoc with the restaurant's seating plans. The food was wonderful. We started with the crab fundido, which was hot, gooey with cheese and studded with huge chunks of backfin crab meat. We both ordered the special taco, which featured marinated pork shoulder and pineapple served on corn tortillas and we treated ourselves to a side of sweet plantains. A watermelon margarita made my night complete. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. One small quibble is portion size. The tacos are approximately 4" in diameter (the tortillas look more like wonton wrapper size)and a serving includes three tacos. This is fine for me but my teenager left hungry. Of course, he is always hungry but an a la carte option might be a nice idea.

We were really looking forward to eating in this place after all the good reviews. Boy were we disppointed. The place is small. The entrance is compromised by the bar. You literally have to squeeze through the bar to get to the dining area. the food is average. It taste like every other pricy restaurant that I ate in. Here is where it is bad. The service. Our waiter was horrible. Slow and did not care. Why? Because we had a party of nine people and the automatic 20% gratuity was already added. We waited forever between courses. It took him 18 minutes to come back after he cleared our dishes for desert. After the desert, we waited and waited. I had to go dfind the waiter in the front. he was just lounging around. 20% gratuity is a joke for bad service. will never go back. Too many restaurants in Philadelphia. They sould realize this before they go out of business.

I have found my new favorite restaurant! La Calaca Feliz was highly recommended by a foodie friend. Boy was she on target! The interior has the beautiful bones of the previous restaurant with an elegant Mexican flair. Service was very friendly and welcoming. Nice to hear servers present Mexican food with a Spanish lilt in their voice. Hubby & I tried 4 appetizers - the meatballs, pulpo, chorizo & duck. Meatballs were perfectly cooked, with cheese in the middle. These had a nice full flavor that did not get lost in the mourh. Pulpo was nicely seasoned and pleasant. The chorizo we fought over and sent a clean plate back to the kitchen. They are served with a tortilla and frankly, I'll have to order them again to figure out what is in there in addition to the chorizo and beans. The duck - well , we had it after the chorizo so frankly I don't remember. Each plate was unique and so good we'd have ordered 2 of each, but that would have meant another hour on the treadmill. I definitely will be back. So glad it is in the neighborhood so we don't have to deal with the weekend crowds other reviewers are struggling with. But what the heck, a few margaritas even the whiners may relax and enjoy the night!

Took my husband here for our anniversary, this was my second time his first. I had the beer week tasting menu...I am soon glad I choose to have this. Began with salmon ceviche with soy mustard sauce and jalapeños, fabulous! Next came crispy pork belly on a black bean corn cake with tomato jalapeño sauce and micro salad on side with pork rinds! Third, hanger steak skewer, jalapeño stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon, this arrived on plate of the best pinto beans I've ever had...finall stout ice cream with a crispy wafer...each course came with a beer, so yup I drank all three.....my meal was beyond good! Hubby had crab fundido which he devoured and the black bass which we have decided is the best fish entree in the city! Be sure to get a margarita, the Garcia is fantastic and strong.....we are so glad lacalaca is five mins away, no need to ride out to cantina Felix in fort washington....unless of course we want that delicious whole suckling pig!

This is phenomenal, contemporary Mexican food. Think a much better El Vez. I am picky when it comes to my Mexican, and La Calaca came through. A friend recommended it. The Baja fish tacos were killer. House made guac was great! Happy hour drink prices were nice too! Clean, cute, quant enviroment and a must visit if you are in the Fairmont area!

This is my favorite restaurant in all of Philadelphia. The marguerites are perfect. I have never had a bad bite of food at this restaurant. The servers are always friendly and quick. My favorites are the short rib nachos (I dream about them), carnitas tacos, cauliflower tacos, chorizo fundito, and the best tacos are the baja fish tacos!!

I will go to La Calaca any day of the week. It's the weeknight date/happy hour with friends/Saturday lunch outdoors place to go in Fairmount. The baja fish tacos are cornmeal crusted - so even though they're fried, they're still super crispy and refreshing. The house margs are what's up - esp for happy hour when they're only $5.50. They will leave you wondering,"why on earth doesn't everyone use a silver tequila in their house margarita???" Let's talk outdoor patios. La Calaca's is an urban oasis out back which is a good size, with strings of lights and a cute garden. I would give them 5 stars, except I don't LOVE the guacamole which tastes a little pre-made, whether it is or not, I'm not sure. But really, if you're a Mexican restaurant, you kinda have to have awesome guacamole. The service has always been exceptional every time I've visited - and although it's generally very busy, they always seem to be able to accommodate one more table. After 5 or 6 visits I think I've only waited for a table once. And really I didn't mind bc the bar is wonderful. Also, I can't give 4.5 stars bc yelp doesn't let me ;) but that's how I really feel.

Great place with great food and decor. It fills up fast so make reservations, if they take them, or get there early. The guac is great. El pastor tacos were great. Avoid the fish tacos though, they were heavily breaded and probably should've been lighter. The plantain sides with cheese were delicious as well. Great attentative service.

la calaca feliz. although this restaurant looks a bit too gringo for a mexican restaurant i would like, i decided to give it a shot. i sat by the bar, right next to two gringas who made a face when i sat next to them. i apologize ladies, this was the only spot available and this is why i sat next to you. i will try to avoid making any sort of eye contact with the two of you. oh but the bartender is here and she's smiley. what do i want to drink? tequila flight. lets show these rookies how its done. no, not really. i just noticed theres a few tequilas i hadn't tried before so why not indulge in a tasting? its not like I have to go to work tomorrow. oh and now that I'm getting hungry i better get some tacos.... its been 35 minutes since my arrival and the ladies next to me are on their 3rd margarita. they are friendly now. 'how are your tacos?' one of them asked. pretty good i said. then this awkward 10 second pause and then i faked getting a phone call and i "picked up" in imaginary russian. yeah, it was random like that. every customer left and i drank two beers. the bartender by far was the highlight of the evening. tequila flights. best served when you're chilin

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the city! My personal favorites are the nachos, the Baja fish tacos and the swordfish tacos. Add one of their three chili margaritas and it's the perfect meal! Whether you live in center city, olde city, down the street in Fairmount, etc. I highly recommend a trip over there.

We went there for Dinner on a Thursday night around 8:30 PM, and had a reservation through OpenTable. The place was about 75% packed and could have probably seated us without any reservation. The atmosphere is pretty casual/semi-trendy. Most of the seating is in the back room, and they have a decent sized backyard seating available, which I assume is open thru warm seasons. The host / wait staff was very friendly. I had Mezcal Mule and my wife had some Mint+Lemonade+Cucumber cocktail. Both of which were pretty good. Mezcal Mule is made with Mezcal, which has a distinct smoky taste, to keep in mind if you're not a big fan of smoky tasting drinks. They have a pretty good drinks selection with a lot of options for Tequila/Margaritas. We ordered Homemade Tomato Tlayuda for appetizer, which is form of thin crust Mexican pizza. It was very tasty. For main course, I had the Chorizo Tacos, and the wife had Crispy Cauliflower Tacos. Both were very delicious, and little different from standard places. Definitely recommended if you're looking for dining options in Fairmount Area.

Best Mexican in the city. Or maybe a close 2nd. My only complaint? Make better margaritas. Fresh lime juice -homemade simple syrup-tequila and some Cointreau. Toss the awful store bought sour mix or buy a better one (Cantina buys a good one) or maybe it's something else.

I came on a Friday night around 7PM with two friends. We started off with Skinny Margaritas which I personally did not care for so I ordered a regular and LOVED it. I think sometimes the flavor is worth the extra calories. ;) We ordered guacamole and plantains to start off with. Both were DELICIOUS. I had never had plantains lighted coated in cheese and they were super tasty! I would recommend an order. I ordered the fish tacos and they were pretty good. I wasn't expecting fried tilapia because I usually see the fish tacos with grilled tilapia so that was a surprise. I probably should have asked though. The fish was also whole fillets instead of being cut into pieces but it came with two tasty sauces on the side. My friends had the pork tacos and chicken quesadilla dish and they both seemed to enjoy. She also ordered a side of elote (corn with cheese and spices) that was AMAZING!!! The side dishes were the winners for me this time. The guac was so good, we ordered a second helping! Def worth the trip. Try plantains, guac and elote! You won't be disappointed.

Drinks and guac review. Love how they serve guacamole in those stone bowls!! The three chili margarita was not for the weak (but it is great for a week day or weekend if you're soft), and the atmosphere was adorable. It was pretty crowded on a Wednesday night surprisingly and the menu looked bomb but i was suffering from PTSD from terror behind the walls to stay for too long. Want to come back for the pork belly tacos!!

Good margaritas, good guac, good tacos. A bit overpriced but still a wonderful Mexican place. Philly doesn't have many so this is great to find in Fairmount. Also, beware of the door behind the Reception table. It's foolishly placed. You'll know what I mean when you see it. Get a shot of tequila and enjoy the painted walls. Or hop out on the patio during warm weather.

Came for dinner but ended up just hanging out at the bar. I got the happy hour special margarita which was perfectly balanced and delicious but will try the three chili margarita that I saw the bartender making next time. I like my drinks with an extra kick to them. The bartender was wonderful and attentive and had a great personality, and that made me happy. I started off getting the Brussels sprout tlayuda and it was great. Only complaint would be the Brussels sprouts themselves. It would have been amazing if they were roasted. Roasting just brings out the sweetness of the Brussels sprouts which the app was just missing a bit of. Then my friend and I split the hamachi ceviche and their special, kale salad. The kale salad in the chipotle dressing was ok. The dressing was great but the rest of the salad was missing something. I think the kale was steamed so maybe a different technique for the kale or just a different type of greens. The hamachi ceviche was out of this world. For about $10, you get 4 corn tortilla chips with a heaping of the hamachi ceviche on each chip. I wanted more! My friend got the tortilla soup which is really all she came for. I'll have to give it a try when I come back next week

La Calaca Feliz is, in my opinion, the best out of three restaurants. Two words- cauliflower tacos. Wow! Cauliflower has never been so delicious. You must try it. We made reservations (they take open table) and were seated quickly on a Saturday night. I got their classic margarita- delicious and dining buddy got the chili margarita which he noted was great, but not nearly as hot as the jalapeno marg at el camino real. But, nothing is ever spicy/hot enough for his liking, so chili marg sipper beware. We started out with the guacamole and pumpkin soup. The guacamole was fresh and delicious. Neither of us cared for the pumpkin soup. It didn't taste like pumpkin, it didn't really taste like squash, and it needed approx. 5 tbsp of salt to taste remotely like anything. I'd advise against. As I mentioned earlier, I had the cauliflower tacos and they were maybe some of the best tacos I have ever had. We also tried the mushroom tacos which were different and delightful. The service here was great. Everyone was friendly but not intrusive. Decorations are fun and atmosphere could be great for a dinner with friends or a nice place to take a date. All in all, I had a great time at La Calaca Feliz and they have this great little back patio area that makes me wish for warmer days. I'll definitely be back.

I've been here twice, once for brunch and once for a birthday dinner. Brunch -- you can sit outside when it's nice out. Both times I got the fish tacos, which are probably the best fish tacos I've ever had. The drinks are also delicious, I got the Mexican version of the Moscow mule.

Live in the neighborhood and have walked by this place a million times. My boyfriend and I decided we would order take out since we had called for a reservation and there was a 2 hour wait. It was very crowded and loud but the staff greeted us immediately and the host was polite and he seemed happy to be there. We order the guacamole, Baja fish tacos and pork carnitas tacos. It was all ready in 15 minutes. (There is a bar, which is nice you can have a drink while you wait for your food or even eat at the bar) Anyway everything looked good, was super delicious and tasted fresh. Definitely recommend trying this spot out!

I visited this place with family, but I was not impressed at all. Food is kind of expensive and very small portions. I had the arrachera (skirts steak) I was expecting the steak and it came in little round cuts with beans. Really? For 18 dollars?? Guacamole was average. Too much lime for my taste. Now, the place has a good atmosphere. It looks like is a popular place to hang out, but food wise I would not recommend. Any restaurant in the Italian market has better choices for half of the money. Anyway, if you are the trendy type of guy this is the place for you.

La Calaca Feliz was a major win. It had a very welcoming and warm ambience and was the perfect place to warm up and unwind after a frigid day at the Eastern State Penitentiary. The sangria was good (not impressive though) and the margarita was up to par (warning:do not eat the garnish inside of it as your mouth will feel like it's on fire). We ordered the Baja Fish Tacos which were fresh and satisfying. The big wow dish of the night was Enchilada con Mariscos. It was everything I could have ever hoped for and more. It was served on a skillet, filled with juicy crab meat chunks and topped with the perfect sauce. Service was a bit slow but not slow enough to lose a star for, Worth a return.

So good! Walking distance to where we live and one of my favorite places for Mexican food. The margaritas are very nice as well. Service was great, and there is an adorable garden area out back.

Completely mediocre Mexican food, everything over salted, and expensive to boot. I would give it two starts, but the server was really great. We had the guacamole, which was very good, but for ten bucks I want a bigger portion. Enchiladas were $20 and nothing special. Nachos were gloppy. Jicama salad was excellent. Pretty loud.

The ambiance is stellar. Eating outside in the summer is one of our favorite things to do. Highly recommend the nacho appetizer. The taco portions are small but tasty.

I'm giving it 3 as a benefit of the doubt. It's my 1st time & maybe it's normally better? I'll explain: I live nearby, but never made it in. Just last week, someone specifically rec the house margarita & nachos (add brisket) at HH to get it at a discount. $5! So, I'm here! I order accordingly, adding the asparagus tlayuda. The nachos have cheese, beans, peppers, brisket, etc. The asparagus thing is like a Mexican pizza. Corn Mesa crust topped with poblano peppers, cheese, jalapeño. Now, u would think with all these toppings, things are going to be flavorful & fun. It was not. This was the most average & bland food. I had to ask for salt & basically bathed my food in salt to eat it. The only thing that rang out in my mouth was eating the slices of jalapeño. At least there was heat! No taste though. :/ The margarita: watery...eh. Verdict: I went out of my way to drive over here from my house (I can walk to my normal establishments). I will never be so inclined to do that again. I gave the extra star thinking that if I ate in the dining room, the food is improved. The reviews & rep are so good, I have to think it was b/c the HH food doesn't get as much attn or something. I will not rule out eating dinner & trying the entrees. But this was not worth moving my car!

Best restaurant in Fairmount. Great decor, good service, fantastic food (especially mushroom tacos). This is our new go-to neighborhood place.

One of my favorite mexican spots in Philadelphia. Located in the Fairmount section of town, this is a nice alternative to the plethora of pubs and American food options in the neighborhood. Parking can be tough in this area on the weekends or later at night so be prepared to walk (unless you're not cheap like me and you don't mind paying for parking in the lot down the street) Anyway, the food is great. A little pricey, but it's a step above regular ole tacos and chips. First off, the guac is fantastic. As good or better than El Vez in Center City. The price is a few dollars cheaper too. As for the entrees, I've only had the tacos and I must say they have a nice variety of options. The al Pastor tacos were fantastic as were the chorizo. If you're not a meat eater, the mushroom or the cauliflower tacos are good too. The sweet plantains are a good choice for a side as well. Overall the ambiance is nice. The restaurant appears small and narrow near the front but it eventually opens up into a good size dining room. They also have a little patio out back for when the weather is good. I highly recommend this spot.

I'm sorry to say but the food was ok. Nothing too memorable and nothing too bad....just average in my opinion.

Entering La Calaca Feliz is a tad precarious, especially on a rainy Friday evening. Somehow you still may manage to snag a spot on the list for a table. The narrow space along the bar by which you passed to give your name will likely be full, but there are other businesses at which to rest for a drink or two while you wait for your cell phone to buzz with a notification text that it's time to eat. The dining area is crowded with tables positioned practically on top of each other. Intimate conversations are ill-advised. The decor and high ceiling compensate for this factor and turn the chatter into a forest of background sounds. The guac is not mind-blowing, which I would prefer at this price point. But the marrow tacos I had were awesome. The marrow came in the bone with tortillas on a dish. Whatever elements were involved were delicious. I was not really impressed with the other dishes. The chicken tacos were unexciting. There were skewers of grilled octopus that were bland and paled in comparison to the pearl onions that accompanied them. Another favorite for me here, however, was the beverage I ordered. I think it might have been the Casey Jones. I wish I were certain, because it could have become my new favorite drink had I remembered it for sure.

Guacamole is NOT fresh or flavorful, it tastes like something you would find in a supermarket or at Taco Bell. Tortilla chips were stale. Saving grace: 3 chile margarita - delicious and perfect. Mushroom tacos were REALLY good, interesting flavor with the lemon vinagrette.

OVER VIEW: Loud, crowded, yuppie-Mexican food. Damn tasty. Had to order a lot and spend a lot to get full. Everyone in the entire restaurant looked to be under 30 years old. THE DETAILS: I want to dislike this place because it is yuppie Mexican food. But it is damn good yuppie Mexican food. It the best restaurant in Fairmount. (This isn't saying much as most restaurants here leave a lot to be desired, but if you are in the neighborhood and want a good place to eat, this is it.) Their ingredients taste super fresh. I like the jicama salad. The tacos are small and over priced. But, they are tasty. I go knowing that I will have to order two entrees of tacos or a big salad, guac, and tacos in order to get full. It is not a cheap taco joint by any means. Nor is it traditional. Go expecting truffle oil and sunflower seeds.

Love this spot but a bit pricey. Love the nachos w short rib, carnitas tacos, fish taco (they'll grill it if you ask instead of frying) and three chili margarita. Yum!

We live in Fairmount, and La Calaca has always been our favorite spot for drinks and dinner. The staff is so friendly and welcoming to us, and our experience there has always been great! When we were planning our June 28 wedding, we chose La Calaca as our reception spot for us and 15 friends. Even though we totally waited until the last minute (I think we gave La Calaca less than two weeks notice) they were super accommodating. We initially met with Kathy, the event coordinator, and she made everything so simple, which we really appreciated, since my partner and I really had no energy around planning anything big or complex! Kathy explained the various menus and drink options, then gave us time to get back to her with our final choices. The prices were incredibly reasonable compared to the catering services we had priced for a reception. The reception dinner went flawlessly! Everyone was so attentive. And the food ... OH, THE FOOD! By the end of the evening we were all happily stuffed from multiple courses, big portions, and drinks that flowed freely. Everything was served family style, which worked out perfectly. All the dishes tasted great ! We especially loved the Hamachi Ceviche, Arrachera Flank Steak, and the Fish Tacos. My husband and I really had a wonderful time, as did our friends. I can't say enough about how fantastic the experience was at La Calaca. La Calaca is a perfect spot for dinner and drinks, and I would definitely recommend them if you are planning an event. They are real professionals that made our wedding day even more memorable! Gracias!

Delicious. Super nice staff. Great environment. It doesn't look kid friendly from first look but we saw it was ok for kids & came barreling in with 3. Everyone was super nice & the kids loved the choices both on the kid menu & regular. The only thing that I would say: a kids margarita is WRONG. Don't think it's cute & the kids will love it. The staff was accommodating, we had a double stroller that in NO WAY was getting through. We folded up and they offered to store it if it got in the way taking it all in stride. The baja fish tacos were delicious & guacamole simple & perfect. And corona light on draft? Ice cold and glorious choice if you aren't into sangria or margaritas.

Watermelon Gazpacho with lump crab meat brought me back to life after a hot traffic filled commute back to town-- seriously one of the best soups I've ever had I can't stop thinking about it. The margaritas are delicious and of the proper strength. Everyone I was with loved the chorizo and carnitas tacos. Can't wait to come back soon!

Came here with a bunch of friends around 10:00. Place was empty but very nice and servers were great. My group ordered a bunch of food and share. 1. Nachos: huge and very good. Need lots of people to finish it. 2. Fish tacos: a good size piece of fish but not that amazing in flavor. 3: Pork tacos: small portions but good flavors and fresh. 4: Tortilla soup: hot but would not order it. Overall if you have money and want a very nice resturant to eat at, this is the place.

Tried this place for the first time last night. Waited for a table for 30 minutes, but I didn't mind. While waiting me and my friends sat at the bar. We ordered mojitos but they were very sour, instead of refreshing. We got our table and ordered mescal tequila flights $17, which were good. We went with the chefs table selection for $29 per person so that we could try more things from the menu. They started off by giving us the traditional guacamole which was a little bland, so I asked for salt since they didn't have any on the tables. Then came the hamachi ceviche, so good I could have made a meal of it. I can't remember the name of this next dish that came out but it was tomatoes with creamy cheese and herbs on a fried tortilla, it was just ok. Next was the fish tacos, a little over cooked and served as one large piece, instead of chopped pieces. It was breaded and deep fried, not grilled, so a little disappointing, but the flavor was ok. Beef rib came next and it too was only ok, I felt it needed more sauce, but the little "gnocchi" thing that came with it was pretty good. Then there was the chicken tinga taco. They had a good flavor and were nice and juicy. I removed the red cabbage from them after the first bite, but that was just a preference, they were good either way. The grilled shrimp with grits and elotes loco came out last and I was pretty much full already lol, but managed to eat more. The shrimp was cooked to perfection, definitely a stand out dish. The elotes came out in a bowl instead of on the cob so we were disappointed. The flavor was good, but no presentation. Dessert isn't included in the chefs table, but the amount of food you get is definitely worth it. We ordered 2 desserts, tres leches and sorbet 3 scoop, they were both good and the scoops were large, so I could have done just one. Overall, this place is good. The service was friendly, the food was good but a little bit bland by this Mexicans standards (keep in mind I like my food very spicy though) and reasonably priced. I will probably give them another try and if I do I will order the hamachi ceviche, grilled shrimp with grits and elotes loco on the cob. Almost forgot, the music they play isn't Mexican, so it takes away from the ambience. I would still recommend the chefs table if you are trying this place for the first time.

Great Mexican. Ordered the short rib nachos, fish tacos and Margie. Service and atmosphere were great. The only reason I didn't give them a 5 is because I would prefer El Vez if I had the choice. I love frozen margaritas and Feliz didn't have that option. Also I wish the fish tacos were served on corn tortillas. And the actual chips in the nachos seemed like bagged chips instead of fried corn tortillas. Great option for authentic Mexican in the city!!

Oh sweet Jesus. It's a miracle I can still type! As I write thing, I am bursting at the seams with the best Mexican food I've had in a long, long time. Now I'm not typically a big fan of Mexican food. It's just not my go-to cuisine. But per a really stellar recommendation, I decided to order catering from La Calaca Feliz for 30 hungry software developers for our weekly late-night. Sure, that's a bold move for a place I never tried, but developers love Mexican, even at its worst. Not only were Kathy (the manager?) and the Chef super accommodating since I gave them 3 hrs notice, but they put together a truly fantastic spread. We got the chicken and carnitas for tacos, fish tacos, beans and rice, refritos, guac, chips, salsa, and chorizo queso fundido. We also ordered cauliflower for vegetarian tacos. And let me tell ya, I've never heard the office so quiet.....which is definitely a good thing!! The chicken was SO juicy, and the tacos came with all the fixings (pickled cabbage, sour cream, queso fresco, onions and cilantro, cactus, salsa roja). The corn soft taco shells had a satisfying chew. The fundido was certainly my guilty pleasure of the night. The refried beans were among the best I've had and frankly, the guac was pretty high up there too. For a chick who doesn't eat Mexican, I ate 3 plates!!! You can tell the ingredients are fresh and the Chef has a passion for his cooking. They've won our entire office over and I'm sure we'll be frequenting them quite a bit!! Gracias, La Calaca Feliz, gracias.

This place is great. The margaritas were delicious ( I got a jalapeño pepper one- definitely ask for it extra spicy!). The guacamole is fresh and served in a huge bowl. I also got the mushroom tacos- some of the best tacos I've ever had!

Wonderful dinner last night! The guacamole is fantastic - so good that I ended up trying the guacamole with bacon and figs for my appetizer and that was excellent as well. I had the tuna tacitos (sorry for spelling) appetizers for my main course and those were excellent as well. The margaritas were also very good. One of my daughters had the kid's peanut butter, jelly and fluffer quesadilla, and she said that was very tasty. Friends had the (1) black bean and (2) tortilla soup and both were super. Not from Philadelphia, so I'm not sure what to expect in terms of seating, but I did find the place to have very tight quarters. Not a problem, if you're used to NYC dining but might be a little loud for a romantic dinner. We were out with family and friends, so the festive environment was just right.

Went there tonight and had an overall great experience but slightly disappointed in the basics. We had the guacamole and salsa for an appetizer. Guac had waaaaay to much lime it in. It ruined it for me. The salsa was good but not very spicy and also slightly smokey flavor which isn't really my cup of tea. The one thing I can highly recommend are the cauliflower tacos!! Seemed like a weird menu item but I'm all for unique items and veggies so I went with it. Cauliflower was perfectly cooked! (Maybe fried?). It was browned and crisped on the ends and very well seasoned. I could have eaten an entire plate of just the cauliflower and not even needed the corn tortilla that made it a taco. Sooo good. I didn't try any of the drinks but others at the table had margaritas that looked pretty good so would try those next time. Definitely going back for the cauliflower!!

Our new favorite authentic Mexican restaurant! The chips and salsa were super addicting. I got the special, which were Blue Marlin Taco - they absolutely incredible! My boyfriend got the pork tacos and asked for it to be substituted with chicken instead - he loved them! Our waiter, Robert was super sweet and helpful. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. The entire staff was cordial and genuinely interested in our comfort and dining experience. This is a rare gem in the city of Philadelphia. We will absolutely be back for more!i

I have been here about 10 times and it is always excellent. Some of my favorites include: Bacon, fig & blue cheese guacamole, Hamachi Ceviche, tacos (all), meatballs, octopus and the tres leches cake. Great tequilla selection as well.

Great food. Great people. Great atmosphere. We have been to the sister restaurant and we love the food. Guacamole was fresh. Chorizo appetizer was very good. Enchiladas were outstanding. Mushroom tacos wonderful.... Great for meat eaters and vegetarians. Dinner for 4 was $99 before tip. We all left waaaay too full, with doggie bags! And finished it all the next day.

About time I got to review this amazing place. I had dinner here around the end of October 2013 with a group of 4 in celebration of my boyfriend's birthday. We got the dinner package to go with our entrance tickets to Terror Behind The Walls so we got a pre-fixed menu. We all ordered different things to try it all out and it was all delicious. From the Chorizo Fundido, to the Vegetable Tlayuda, to the Chicken Enchilada, to the Ceviche..... the list goes on. That was just the food. The service, organization and decor gave this place its fifth star. Everyone was so welcoming and attentive. We went on a Saturday and even though we were running late for our reservation driving from NYC, they were able to accommodate us as soon as we got in. They also had our tickets to TBTW ready to go for us once the check came. It love when plans go so smoothly. Will definitely be coming back when I'm in Philly!

LACKLUSTER service, from the manager to the servers. Inattentive & lackadaisical to say the least. For the only half decent food in Fairmount (which took way too long after ordering at a slow time in the restaurant), they should really work on service & speed.

Not sure where all the good reviews are coming from. For our appetizer, we ordered the regular guacamole and the fig and bacon guacamole. They were very average - I could easily make the same at home and there was nothing special or memorable about it. Moreover, I expect corn chips at a sit down Mexican restaurant to be at least as good as Chipotle quality, which is not a high standard. These were not. Next, I got the Baja fish tacos for my entree. Again, it was pretty disappointing. Firstly, quantity - there are only 2 tacos, and no sides that come with it for $14. Usually less quantity means better quality, but not this time. First bite - the fish was dry. It's pretty difficult to mess fried fish up, cause if you just put some fresh fish in batter and oil, it's pretty foolproof. But they did, and it wasn't until after the meal that I figured out why. I'll get to that in a second. The fish itself also had little to no flavor and was very overfried. Most of the flavor came from the 2 sauce cups that they give you, which was passable. Finally, we got the check. For a party of 6, they added a 20% gratuity charge to our bill. I'm all for leaving generous tips, but a mandatory 20% tip for a small with under $15 dishes is just a little pretentious. Granted the service was actually very good - we were served very quickly, food arrived quickly, waters filled multiple times, check arrived quickly (we actually in and out within 50 min) - so I probably would have left something close to 20% anyway, but by making it mandatory, the high quality service is no longer commendable, just expected now. As we were walking out, we were able to see the kitchen preparing the food because their kitchen is right in front on the lower level. So I see the chef pull out a bag from the freezer with battered fish and throws some fish in the deep fryer. And that just completely explained the taste of the meal.

"8 stars!" my boyfriend declares, after I tell him that I'm writing a review for La Calaca Feliz. I'm not really sure how else to convey the level of enjoyment we had at happy hour this past week. The food was excellent, the drinks were great, and I do believe I've found a new favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. Happy Hour Pork Carnitas (Pulled Pork, Salsa Roja, Onions, Cilantro, Avocado) - 4.5 out of 5 2 Carnitas for $5 is a bargain, for how fresh and delicious they were. I was pleasantly surprised that the pork had a nice tender texture to it, with ribbons of crispy skin, but with an all-around clean flavor. I liked that LCF did not rely on a dredging it in heavy marinade or sauce, but rather fresh ingredients, to accent the smoky pork. Happy Hour Heirloom Tomato Tlyuda (Heirloom Tomatoes. Manchego Crema, Requeson, Poblanos, Black Truffles, Cotija) - 5 out of 5 We loved every element of this dish. "Tlyuda" is a sort of flatbread pizza. However, it doesn't impart any of the heaviness of either its Italian or Mexican cousins. The result is a perfectly light, crispy flatbread with mild cheeses on the "crust" and a slightly softer center. The Requeson, a mild cheese almost resembling ricotta, was so creamy! The saltiness of the Cotija, creamy Requeson, sweet plum heirloom tomatoes, and earthly chunks of black truffle were an out-of-this-world heavenly combination. Hamachi Ceviche (Pico de Gallo, Lime Aioli, Chile Pequin, & Corn Tortilla) - 5 out of 5 Amazing! This app would be perfect for sharing. There are four circular rice crackers, each topped with a salad of: small pink cubes of fish, red cubes of tomato, cilantro, and microgreens; topped with a section of avocado. [The Tlyuda and the Ceviche are tied for my favorite dishes of the evening.] Guacamole - 2 out of 5 Good, but not great. For $9.95, it is a pretty small portion. It didn't compare to kinds I've made at home and/or ate at other restaurants. It tasted pureed, excessively creamy, and didn't have much texture. The flavor was flat. The chips, albeit under-salted, were average. As a side note, I chose La Calaca because there are some light dishes on the menu. In many Mexican places, you'll find heavy dishes that leave you feeling uncomfortably full and lethargic. There's a Japanese saying "hara hachi bunme," which instructs one to eat until one is eight-tenths, or 80 percent, full. When we left LCF, we were comfortably sated and happy.

Overpriced for tacos, but creative menu, great atmosphere, and most importantly, wonderful margaritas! Stick with a taco truck for cheap, good eats. Invest in crab dip and the corn! Servers always friendly.

... I don't get it. I mean, reading these reviews makes me feel like Tom Hank's adult character in Big, when all the adult toy makers are in awe of an overly simplistic, unimaginative skyscraper that can "transform" into a robot. I don't get. Excellent service!

There are quite a few Mexican places in the city that are much more popular because of the famous names behind them, but La Calaca tops my list, that's for sure. I love how it's tucked away in a row home on Fairmount Ave and their outdoor dining courtyard is so great because it's off the back part of the restaurant in a secluded area. Their Margaritas are absolutely delicious, I love the seasonal fruit they offer to mix things up a bit. I highly recommend starting with the guac and chips and ordering the fish tacos for your entree. They are both so, so good. My fiance and I love coming here for happy hour, dinner, mid day treats, you name it. The prices are so reasonable, especially for such amazing food, there really is no need to try anywhere else. Can't wait to go back.

Great place. They really get the whole restaurant experience. Not your typical Mexican place, but with plenty of typical fare. Some really extraordinary dishes to compliment traditional favorites. People are great and interior is very appealing. Family friendly and also plays to those who are unrestrained by kids. The overall experience leaves you feeling quite pleased!

This is the best Mexican place I've ever eaten at. Went with a larger group and tried several dishes. Every single item I tried was top notch. The guacamole was the best I've ever tried and I ate a lot of it. I'm not sure what the exact names of the items were, as we did some sharing but I had various tacos that were incredible, off the charts steak (I believe it was a flank) and also a seabass with kind of a Mexican risotto that was phenomenal.

Dinner at La Calaca Feliz was a great way to end the holiday weekend on a high note. I was happy we made reservations; the dining room was packed the entire time we were there. We were seated in the back left corner by the fireplace. The restaurant is really pretty and has some great little touches, like the high tin ceiling with star chandeliers, the beautiful outdoor seating and the mural on the side wall. We started with margs and guac. The reposado margarita was recommended but for a few dollars less, the house margarita was really delicious. The guacamole was awesome - plenty for two and with a little bit of heat. I enjoyed the tortilla soup but the watermelon gazpacho gave it a run for its money; perfect for summer. We were treated to a dish from the kitchen that was a special. I can't recall the name but it consisted of noodles, fish sauce, yellowtail, peas, green peppers and mushrooms. It was very Thai-reminiscent, not what I would have expected but absolutely delicious. By the time entrees arrived we were already really full. I had a few bites of the skirt steak and beans from my arrachera dish, but had most of it boxed to go (yay leftovers!). Same with the delicious plantains. I couldn't even fathom a peek of the dessert menu, but I do know that I cannot wait to go back for another meal. It's definitely a strong birthday dinner contender.

My friend and I went in on a bitter cold Thursday evening. Score 1 for Calaca; it was happy hour and the server asked if we wanted to sit down for dinner or at the bar for happy hour. Being we were in a bit of a rush, we elected to sit at the bar and have drinks and appetizers/guac and chips. We both liked the dining area and bar areas. Both areas exuded a natural warmth and were inviting as well as attractive. The restaurant itself was warm and toasty which was very appealing when coming in out of the freezing weather. We were underwhelmed by our sangrias. They looked appealing but were lacking in any detectible liquor. The guac was just so so. My friend said the brussel sprout flatbread she ordered was just fair. The bartender was friendly and helpful when we asked a question about a few of the dishes. He tried his best to be helpful. I would like to come back again if just for the atmosphere.

The entrance to this place is a little funny - you walk in by a narrow bar, and then proceed to walk through the expo area and into the dining room. Once back there though, it's adorable - murals on the walls and a really cute patio. I liked our table by the patio doors, and since it was an unusually warm November 1st - the doors were open, and people were outside. We took our good ole time ordering each and every course, and the waitress was super accommodating and did not rush us at all. We got a pitcher of red sangria ($28 - which is probably about 5 glasses). We then ordered the guac - which was good and came to the table in about 2 minutes which was awesome - and the chorizo fundido. I thought the fundido was good - basically melted cheese with red and green peppers and chorizo. For our main courses, my date got the tacos al pastor, which I did not try, but looked delicious. I got the seafood enchiladas - which were tasty. We ordered sweet plantains and beans and rice as sides, which both had a lot of flavor. Needless to say, I was completely stuffed and happy. Service was excellent. Never an empty water glass (or sangria glass for that matter). Our table was wiped down, and we were given new silverware in between each course. They have a daily chef's tasting menu for only $29 which I want to go back sometime soon to try! Also - according to the bathroom mirror : Happy M-F from 5-7 and S-Su from 10pm-midnight.

I made reservations and was seated promptly. The host and staff were very friendly. The decor was appropriate but the dining room was a little too crowded. It was valentines say weekend so maybe they shoved in a few extra tables? We ordered the chicken tortilla soup which was awesome. They offered to split it up for us so we could try it without getting too full for dinner! Rich tomato base with chipotle flavoring and soft chicken chunks! We also got the nacho app with short ribs to start. The presentation was beautiful but the taste didn't live up. There were millions of peppers on it and no beef. All the toppings were just on the top of the pile so there were tons of naked nachos leftover, hah. The guacamole was great and you could tell good avocados were used. It wasn't sour or salty like some others. The fish tacos were awesome and they are coated with plantains instead of flour. Other entree was the Enchiladas which were ok. The green chile sauce was delicious but there was barely any chicken inside. Sides are extra! Overall good experience!

Good food, but I think its over hyped. It's pretty tight in the back dining room and it'll feel like everyone else is right on top of you. I had the carnitas and I don't think they are as good as the ones at Feliz in Manayunk. You can go to any mom and pops spot and the Mexican food will be twice as good.

Stopped in for drinks and some Guacamole around 10pm... The place was packed! The atmosphere is super nice, great decorations and very clean, good music not too loud. The guacamole was the 2nd best I've had in my life! The chips and salsa were spot on. I had my first mojito, delicious and strong. The bar tender was super helpful in suggesting tequilas to try, and I had a shot flight... My favorite was the Partida Reposado. Definitely reccomend this place for a nice night out.

I have been meaning to try La Calac for the longest time now, having lived a 10-minute walk away from it for almost 3 years now. Me and my girlies from work decided to take advantage of the happy hour. However, the prices for happy hour to me seemed a bit steep. $5 for margaritas and Sangrias I can live with but $5 dollar for a single taco I am not so sure about. Although $2 off draft beer was definite steal. The service seemed off. We felt forgotten because none of the staffs were ever in sight and not once we were checked up on. I never recieved a glass of water upon my arrival. Food was ok, but if the staff were a bit more attentive, I believe I would have enjoyed it way more.

For Philly, this is a solid 4 stars for Mexican, but having lived in Texas, my expectations are much higher. The margaritas are great (although pricey), the guacamole was also terrific, and they stayed with the authentic corn tortillas and not the Americanized flour tortilla that everyone prefers. However, their sauces are way too heavy with the consistency of ketchup, their salsa - while fresh- lacks taste, and the service was slow and it was very loud. I will definitely be back, as it's the best Mexican i've had in Philly but that's not a long or distinguished list.

Boo, La Calaca! The only reason this is a three star review and not two is because my margarita was awesome and the guac was delicious. The pork tacos, though, were completely floating in grease - I wish I was exaggerating. I don't eat a lot of meat, so when I do indulge, I want the food to be killer. I get that this is a first world problem, but my stomach was absolutely not happy after eating my dinner. If we come back, I'll probably go for the cauliflower tacos instead; hopefully avoiding any kind of animal fat in this restaurant will be the way to go.

Good food and great ambience. The grilled corn and cauliflower tacos were my favorite. The kale salad was a little too tart from too much dressing and needed something sweet to balance it out. Guacamole was fresh, as were the chips. The chorizo taco that my friend got was bland and needed a lot more flavor. Overall, I'll definitely go back.

I had the pork belly tacos and the refried beans. They were very good. I also had the chocolate cake with banana ice cream. Which was delicious. The only negative was the ice cream which had some ice crystals (possibly frozen chunks of bananas) that were not very appealing.

Great place make sure to have reservations as it can be difficult to get a table without. We had the tasting menu which was delicious. Just let them know if you have any allergies so they can adjust ingredients. Wonderful food

This cheerful Mexican restaurant is a good choice for tasty upscale dining and/or drinking in Fairmount. If there's going to be a long wait and there's no room at the bar, you can leave your cell number with them and they will call you so you can hang out elsewhere. The drink menu has a a good selection of beers, wines, and cocktails, and all the ones I've tried have been very good. The guacamole comes in a molcajete bowl, which is a nice touch. What's even nicer is that it tastes fresh and yummy. Among the unique entrees you can find on the menu here is the roasted marrow tacos dish. It provides a unique taste and texture, makes for tasty tacos, and is worth a try. Bonus if you come here with cool company willing to share and explore so you can sample more items. Service is friendly and competent. Prices are reasonable, though on the pricey side. The decor is quietly comforting.

La Calaca Feliz serves up a banging margarita. On top of its superb beverage options La Calaca Feliz has an overall great menu. I recommend the plantains, the corn, the carnitas taco, and nachos.

Great staff, great food. I visit Philly frequently (used to live in the Fairmount neighborhood), and this is really the best Mexican I've had in Philly. On Saturday I ordered their version of shrimp and grits -- grilled shrimp on tequila-spiked grits. That dish is perfection.

I had an awesome dinner at La Calaca Feliz. Everything clicked as soon as we walked in the door on a very busy Saturday night. The two hostesses were friendly and as we had a reservation we were quickly seated. Things got even better. The waiter was great and though we ordered a bunch of small plates, he made sure they came out exactly in the order we had designated if it were possible. Everything was paced perfectly. The restaurant manager Zack stopped by the table a couple of times to make sure everything was cool .... it was! Now for the food - all of it was tasty but def highlights include the mexican street food - Elotes - thumbs up! The Campechano Tlayuda which to me I've always thought of like a Mexican pizza was likewise superior and best of all was the Crab Fundido. It may be hard to go wrong with a fondue of crabmeat and cheese ... but even so La Calaca Feliz got it totally right. A note on the ambience. This place was busy but buzzed very friendly .... and the elongated horizontal skylight with its tin ceiling is architecturally awesome. This is def a place to recommend to all my friends. They're opening up a place soon in Manayunk, the manager told me, but the new place can't be any better than this Fairmount/Art Museum gem!

I am truly impressed with the simple transformation of this space. The murals are lovely and it really has a sparkle that the previous occupant didn't. I can't wait to dine outside on the patio once its not 100 degrees everyday. I have been here twice now, once for drinks and once for food. I have also tried to eat here a handful of times but found an hour plus wait and choose to go somewhere else. However on a summer Sunday evening we were seated immediately. Upon entering, you can tell that they take hospitality serious here. Everyone greets you, hostesses, bartenders, servers, bussers, cooks etc. It's refreshing in an area of the city known more for bars than food to experience this. For food I tried the guacamole and the squash blossom tacos. Both were excellent. I really enjoyed the toppings on the tacos (crispy fried potatoes and slivered radishes). It's nice to know there is finally great Mexican available in our area. I also really appreciated that the tacos didn't come with rice and beans because I rarely want those as a side dish and prefer to save myself for an appetizer or dessert. The waitress made it very clear what to expect which I also appreciated. Clay loved his chicken enchiladas with the green chili sauce as well. For cocktails I have had a regular margarita as well as their special paloma on the night we dined in. I would definitely order the paloma again and I hope it makes it onto their permanent menu. They also get big points for having cocktails named after Grateful Dead songs. They also have a variety of craft beers on draft and cheap cans of tecante.

Love this place! Their cocktails are always spot-on and the food is fantastic. The decor is also beautiful. I now frequently crave their Baja tilapia tacos. They are just about the best thing you can eat. Really.

What a wonderful place. Fabulous staff and excellent food and drinks. Our family celebration could not have been any better. The preselected menu was amazing and so filling. We started with Matt's recommendation for margaritas, with passion fruit, blood orange, chile and traditional. We each had a different one and the tasting began. Fresh guacamole and chips started us off and the team kept them coming. Then came the jicama salad, which we were allowed to substitute (if i forgot to mention how accommodating the staff was...let me tell you they are the best!) Then came Hamachi Tostados ... Gone in a flash, followed by asparagus tlayuda and chorizo fundido....and there was still a third course to come and dessert. The fish tacos were the best i have ever had and i am a beach bum, so we have fresh fish tacos at the beach all the time and none come close to these. Served with plantains and crema and black beans. We had no room for the chicken enchiladas, no problem, Matt packed them up for the college grads to take home for later that night or the next day. More margaritas and mexican chocolate cake with roasted banana ice cream rounded out our meal. THANK YOU LA CALACA FELIZ FOR A WONDERFUL NIGHT, A GREAT CELEBRATION, FOR BEING SO WONDERFUL TO US! You were so attentive frim our first call for information through menu selection, greeting us and serving us. We highly recommend La Calaca Feliz!

Not overwhelmingly good, not underwhelmingly bad. It's a cute, small place in fairmount. The dining room is in the back, past the front bar and the noise level is average. I started with the three chili margarita. The margarita was delicious, definitely one of the spicier blends I have tried. We split crab guacamole. It was good but the portion was small for $15.95. It also came with a small side of salsa. I ordered the enchilada con mariscos for my entree. Wasn't entirely satisfied with this dish. It wasn't bad but didn't really have any strong flavor. Overall I would come back again if in the neighborhood for a drink or to try the tacos but wouldn't go out of my way to venture back.

Exactly what Fairmount needed, a GREAT Mexican joint to grab margaritas, tacos and all the South-of-the-Border fixings when you're craving them! Their version of a mojito (sorry, the name slips me!) is to die for, and the guac is on point. Both their carnitas and chicken tacos with queso fresco couldn't have been fresher, and the wait staff was incredibly baby-friendly as we had our 5-month old with us, and she wasn't necessarily being the calmest patron. A family-friendly spot I highly recommend!

I am obsessed with nachos. That's the first thing I saw when I walked past the bar into the restaurant, as a server was bringing them to someone else's table. Nachos: A generous portion served on a big plate straight out of the oven. They are covered in fresh toppings and none of them were soggy. My only complaint was once we got halfway through the pile of chips we started running out of toppings. I would say they could be 10/10 if they layered more toppings throughout the chips. Sangria: It was labeled as a pitcher but really was served in a carafe. The glasses came filled to the top with ice - making it awkward for the server to pour the sangria into it. Once the ice started to melt a bit, the taste was delicious and refreshing. Plaintains: Ripe and sweet and covered in a light crema sauce. I usually enjoy the outer edges burned and crispy a little bit more, but still a solid side dish. Vegetal tacos: I totally appreciate that they have several vegetarian taco selections. These come without cheese, but you can add that on when ordering. They are served covered in crispy little strips of fried potatoes. This was such a nice touch!! Delicious. The homemade churro ice cream sounded so good but after 3 dishes I was too full. I will definitely be back to try out other menu items. Rumor has it that they are going to open up a greenhouse addition onto the back of the dining room.

I love this place! The food is great, the staff is nice and the restaurant is very pretty. The only reason I only put 4 stars instead of 5 is because they only have 2 tables outside and that's the only place where ppl with dogs can sit. Every time I come I see 2s and small parties siting there without a dog when I think they should perhaps suggest them to go inside or in the yard, so they can keep those table for ppl with dogs. I heard this complain from few friends who live in the neighborhood and they have dogs and love this place... This is Just a management suggestion.

Great space, decent atmosphere. Food and beverage are super average. Store bought tortillas. Bland salsa. Bland tilefish over rice. Over-sweet margaritas. Bland fish tacos. Basically, a step up from chain mexican restaurant food. We do better at home. The only reason we might return is for the tequila flights, which run right around $10 for 3 quality shots. I assume this is available at the bar, so I'd head straight there and skip the food.

Drinks drinks drinks!! Their margaritas and speciality cocktails are so different from another. It's all fresh squeezed juices, some added with vanilla and ginger. Didn't try the food. Excellent service though. My friend tried the Tennessee Jed (a bourbon cocktail made with whiskey, Campari, and vanilla) and she didn't like it, even though she's a whiskey girl, and the head bartender made her another one and was sure to make sure she was satisfied before walking away.

You must have their elotes loco! It is a bit messy, so make sure you don't have it on a date night (waiter had to bring me extra napkins, lol). It is the most amazing corn on the cob you will ever enjoy. If our wallet allows us we get the chefs menu and it has time after time proven to be AMAZING! It is worth every penny and you definitely won't be disappointed. Love this place!

We came for dinner last weekend and everything was great! I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but La Calaca does it well. Everything is tasty and not super heavy like lots of other Mexican restaurants. It's definitely worth noting that the complimentary chips and salsa were amazing. Just perfect. We split the octopus appetizer and then the black bass for me and the chicken mole for him, with a side of plantains. Mine was delicious (I first had this entrée at the original Cantina Feliz). Then for dessert we split the sundae. Dessert was the only part of the meal that was just alright. Service and prices are on point. A great dinner option in Fairmount!

This place is great! Visited based on the high rating and now I know why. When first entering, the place is dimly lit and nicely decorated. Extremely clean looking as well! Our server was really nice and engaged in conversation when need be, but never hovered. We ordered the hamachi ceviche and pumpkin soup, both fantastic! The tostada the hamachi ceviche was presented on gave it the perfect crunch. For dinner we ordered Baja fish tacos and chicken enchiladas. Both exceptional. We will definitely be coming back!

drink - spicy/chili margarita: awesome. the spicy sweet combination is always a hit in my book appetizers - nachos: i love it when they layer the nachos, so every chip has something on it. Not to mention the homemade chips and ingredients put these nachos over the top dinner - fish tacos: just. amazing. flaky, lightly fried fish with this delicious red cabbage slaw paired with some cucumber mint and chipotle sauce on the side. oh man. just do it.

Sat at the bar at this relatively new mexican spot in a very different fairmount ave than that was there just two years ago. Paralleling the theme of most new restaurants on fairmount, the decor is hipster-esque and overall very appealing. We sat at the intentionally dented copper topped bar, however, the restaurant area seemed pretty nice from far, adorned with many people with inverse relationships between them and their eyeglass rim thickness. None the less, a chill enough vibe to randomly stop in while being nice enough for a date with a girl who isn't in the business of digging for gold. On to the drinks and food. The beer menu was ehh. The tequila selection and margarita list seemed extensive. We started off with the nachos. Though they don't come with chicken, the chef was kind enough to throw some in. While nachos are nachos, their amazing open fire oven giving the nachos a smoky flavor made regular nachos pretty spectacular. Plus, the portion is huge. If you have $20, you have dinner for 2 any night of the week splitting the nachos with a couple beers. On another visit we shared the hamachi ceviche, which was spectacular. Super fresh yellowtail, mixed with fresh avacado, tomato, and not overpowered with citrus, served on a crispy fried cracker of some sort that made eating ceviche so much easier. The boneless ribs were satisfactory, but I wouldn't get them again, I like my ribs traditional style. The Elote loco or grilled corn with a lime mayo, cotija cheese etc was outstanding. Don't let the mayo throw you off, it's not weird. And before I forget, the chili margarita is banging. Looking forward to sampling the rest of the menu.

I had the best Mexican I've ever had here today. The fish tacos, fried just right, were as amazing as everyone said they would be. I am not a fan of the salmon ceviche, although it wasn't bad tasting or anything, just wasn't exceptional enough. What completed my meal was the enchilada con maricos, amazeballs! The sauce had this smoky flavor to it that I can't explain. The place by itself is warm and inviting. The guacamole served with the tacos was really fresh. They had everything down to the tee. And four stars because the dessert I chose--tres leches--wasn't the best I've had. It was just about alright but I liked that they served cream on the side and not on the cake itself.

Maybe I was expecting too much. After trying to get in for dinner on several occasions, my family thought La Calaca would be a perfect weeknight birthday place. We were all looking forward to some tasty Mexican food and fun high energy atmosphere. (Please do not interpret that as a desire for a Chi Chis or Chiles night.) The greeting, the walk to the table was in-line with expectations, then it all fell apart. The food is good....decent guacamole and very clever tacos. Sure it wasn't a gastronomic home run, but it was good. Overpriced for what it was, but good. However, the service was just terrible (our waiter forgot drinks and stood around talking to fellow staff members, looking directly at our table while we sat with empty glasses) When reminded of the many things he forget, the waiter was unapologetic and acted like we were interrupting his time to hang with his friends. Meanwhile the bus boys worked like crazy and ran around keeping things moving. In general we felt like the place was buying its own hype.

La Calaca was a really fun atmosphere and the food was pretty tasty too. I went w/ my cousins last Friday and we had to wait a bit for our 9pm reservation. We weren't taken right away, so we ordered drinks at the bar. The drinks were tasty (red sangria, white sangria, and a cucumber/mint muddled drink), but the space is so tight near the bar & that wasn't very fun. We tried the guacamole (very tasty), the crab fundido (creamy and pretty good), and the octopus skewers (really good). We also had some entrees. The fish tacos were great (I didn't even eat the taco part. Just ate the cabbage slaw w/ the fried fish and I was super content). We all shared the sweet plantains. They're a must!

Took my boyfriend there for his birthday last night. I loved everything. We had the Duck Empanadas which were on special, my boyfriend really loved the sauce. We also got chips & salsa...it was the best salsa I think I have had...maybe it was the roasted corn flavor, so good! I got the grilled shrimp (which were huge) with grits, bacon & corn YUM. He had the Black Bass with crab & poblano rice which was also really good. I enjoyed my drinks, Blood Orange Margarita & Cucumber Blues both refreshing! He thought the drinks were too sweet however. I would definitely go back...hopefully soon :-)

This place is a winner, especially if you are gluten sensitive - there were only 2 items on the entire menu that were not gluten-friendly. So if you have Celiac disease, you can dine stress-free here. The staff was very knowledgeable about the ingredients in the food and said the magic words for anyone with Celiac: "I am pretty sure there's no gluten, but I will double-check with the chef to be absolutely sure." The food is very good - the guacamole is fantastic - order it. Drinks are great, atmosphere is great, and they have outside dining in the back (no vagrants to harass you while you eat - it's Philly after all.)

We made an Open Table reservation for last Friday night since there's always a huge line. I got to the restaurant before my husband and friend and was told we'd be seated when everyone arrived. This was not the case, though others who walked in off the street were seated before us. We waited a full half hour for our table. Meanwhile, our friend, an event planner, persuaded the manager to give us margaritas and guacamole, and he absolutely gets one star for that (no more, because he should have thought of it himself!) I'll give one more star for food, which was regulation Mexican, nothing more, nothing less. Noise level was very high (but it was Friday night). We will NOT give it another try.

My girlfriend and I love checking out neighborhood bars. This one has been on our list for awhile but we always end up going elsewhere randomly. Well we finally made it, made reservations and arrived on a Monday night and there was a steady crowd in there. Great atmosphere and the food comes out fast and is fantastic. It was our first time there and normally when letting a server know that they will volunteer information about the Menu and the restaurant. Not our server! Felt like he hated us from the moment we sat down. He was just dry, miserable, and not attentive at all. I felt like he would even avoid looking at our table. As a matter of fact after we put in our food and drink orders we did not see that gentlemen until it was time to pay our bill. The host was actually very nice and ended up serving us for remainder of our dining experience for some reason. He immediately offered suggestions for desert knowing that it was our first time and he was just a genuinely nice guy. You can definitely sense that there was some internal issues or animosity built up with our original server. The food runners were great and so was everyone else so we left a great tip although it was undeserving of our server. Philly has so many great food options so at the end of the day the service will always be the determining factor. Crab Fundido is great, So are the tacos, & shrimp and grits. Would have love to try the Chef tasting Menu but the server could not tell me one item that was included with it. "Its just random items off the menu". Great answer. "Do you have any suggestions for us.........." , Server - "I mean not really it depends on what you like", uummmm alright then.

You know your about to have a great experience when there's a portrait of 'The Most Interesting Man in the World' hanging on the bathroom wall. We'd been to a string of bad restaurants before this so it was a breath of fresh air stumbling into place. Margarita's were strong, guacamole was solid, salsa was great, and the entrees were a home run. Then to top it off the brownie sundae with churro ice cream and caramel popcorn knocked it out of the park. We were very pleased with the service and the entire experience. I would definitely recommend to friends and will be going back very very soon.

This is probably our family's favorite restaurant in all of Fairmount (one of our favorite in all of the city!). Where to begin . . . . The food is incredible. The guacamole is outstanding (very fresh and very tangy) - we have a small child who eats almost nothing but this! The tacos are also superb - as are the sides (if you haven't tried the refried beans or black beans you are missing out). The drinks are also good. Margaritas, Mohittos (spelling LOL?) -- they are to die for. (I will say - as others have commented on - that they are a little weak in the alcohol content, but otherwise delicious). The décor and atmosphere is also very nice. I will note - for all the parents out there - that this restaurant is extremely child-friendly. We always bring our small child there and we are always treated very well (unlike some of the more posh restaurants in the city). The staff is extremely friendly and patient (key characteristics as, again, we often bring our small child!). My only complaints - as others have noted - the prices are slightly high. They are not ridiculous, but they do seem higher than they should be. Also (as others have commented), the portions are fairly small. (An order of tacos will not be enough - trust me.). Other than that though - this restaurant is truly awesome (5 stars!).

We took my parents here when they were in town visiting as they have few opportunities to eat Mexican food. From the start, our experience was excellent. My father is deaf in one ear and whilst a small gesture, it was notable how responsive the staff was to this and tried to make him as comfortable (and able to hear the menu) as possible. In addition, I'm currently pregnant, and they were especially understanding and responsive to my current food restrictions as well. Three of the four of us did the tasting menu, and for $29, I declare it the absolute best value for a tasting menu I've ever had. SUPERB from start to finish and so much food for this rate. Truly awesome. My father said their mole sauce was the best he's ever had. YUM! From the truly sweet staff to the food, we'll definitely be back!

We had the $29 tasting menu. It was excellent and an amazing value. Each of the three "courses" actually consisted of multiple dishes, every one of which was very good to outstanding. We were stuffed. The margaritas were excellent too. Very good service. In total, under $200 for four people with 1-2 drinks each, the tasting menu, and a shared dessert. You can't eat this well in Center City at that price.

Pretty good. The atmosphere is really nice, you can see the kitchen and its not too dark/light or loud/quiet. Got the chorizo tacos. Would get the same thing again for sure. Good draft/beer/tequila list. Food took long to come, however, the manager came over and apologized. Would def go here again.

I am going to admit something quite embarrassing, I spent my Cinco de Mayo at Chili's. Yes, yes I know that you're thinking "but you're so much better than that Bec" and believe me, I know, but I was in this silly excuse of a city called "Harrisburg" and it was either that or Bob Evans; of the two, at least we were being mildly festive. Regardless, here I was at Chili's where in this episode of taco sadness and tequila nonsense made salty by nothing but my tears, I pined for the freshly awarded 3-bell La Calaca Feliz and the dinner I deserved for this holiday that I don't even celebrate yet feel compelled to partake in if for nothing else but the tacos....and the tequila. Fast forward 24 hours and I am sitting down for a proper mini fiesta para dos. I stop for a minute or five and take a look around, then I hear the music, I can't help but smile. A whole wall of french doors each sporting a different set of doorknobs and backplates leads out to a courtyard with additional seating to the 60 or so available spots in the main dining room. Exposed beams play host to Moravian star pendants while leading the eye to an ornate pressed tin ceiling. Wall mounted stained glass and feather painted sconces along with animal skulls accent what little space has been left untouched by the painted "la calaca feliz" murals, the happy skeletons for which the restaurant is appropriately named. Visually overloaded, my ears took over perking up to hear Vampire Weekend, Miike Snow, and the Fratellis; upbeat music to match the whimsical environment, I smiled...a lot. Our server Lauren was awesome, she was nothing but smiles and made some great suggestions off of the menu. Our first instinct was to order pulpo as an appetizer, but opted instead for the Albondigos on the recommendation that it was a crowd favorite; looking back I'm not sure why we ever teetered between the two, these were meatballs stuffed with gooey oaxaca cheese and an ancho berry glaze. For a brief moment after these skewered wonders were consumed I thought that my dining partner was going to pick up the plate and lick it clean, thank God he didn't. Lauren came back after our appetizer to introduce a special addition to the menu for the evening, she only needed to mention two words before huge smiles creeped up on our faces....SUCKLING PIG. Yeah, we'll take it....and so as not to go too meat-heavy on dinner we also placed an order for fish tacos, this was my post-Cinco de Mayo feast after all and I love tacos more than pretty much anything. A short while later, dinner arrived and here's how it goes... 1. The special: suckling PIG in its own little pot set over black beans and BACON topped with CHICHARRON was a serious piggy party; count 'em up, one-two-three servings of swine in one dish. Served with baby tortillas, salsa verde, and esquites on the side this was what we like to refer to as a "laughable dish"...something so good you can't help but laugh. 2. Fish tacos: crispy blue tilapia set on two tortillas topped with a cabbage slaw and radishes. Now normally fish tacos have a reputation for being greasy to the point of saturating the tortilla, or that the toppings are too soupy that you turn your tortilla to mush and find yourself having to cut what should be a happy little handheld meal. None of these possible problems arose as the tortillas withstood the weight of the fish, the light vinaigrette on the slaw was just enough to taste without being overwhelming and saucy, the two optional additions of chipotle aioli and avocado/cilantro green goodness were left on the side to avoid any additional moisture from breaking the taco. Dessert was completely unnecessary after the gluttony of dinner, but almost a must since we tried to touch on something from each part of the menu. The tres leche cake topped with thin slices of kiwi and sidelined with chopped mango and whipped cream was a sweet way to close out a fantastic dinner. So here's the thing, I have given my two thumbs up wholeheartedly cheering that this may have been the best meal consumed since my birthday last fall and while this review comes just days after Mr. LaBan sang his praises, my review has something that his does not...a shoutout to the kitchen of La Calaca Feliz. Where he says that he simply did not have enough room to give kudos to Lucio Palazzo of former Xochitl fame, or Jim Kenngott of Lolita, Yelp gives me tons of room to spout what my friend did shortly after we finished our meal that being "there is some serious magic coming out of that kitchen". If you get nothing else out of this wordy homage to super awesome fare in Fairmount, an oft overlooked neighborhood by myself (guilty) and I'm sure others, get yourself there...now. If you thought it was bad enough finding yourself facing an hour wait as a walk-in, prepare for it to get worse. Word is out that this is THE place to get your Mexican munch on.

At any other restaurant, I would NEVER allow myself to pay $15 for 2 fish tacos. At La Calaca Feliz, however, I'll order everything on the menu and gladly wipe out my checking without thinking twice. Seriously, I hope nothing changes about this place because it's so amazing. Ordered 2 baja fish tacos for takeout one night. With tax it came to $16 and some change and I was anticipating it to be bland and not filling and overpriced. What I got were two large and fresh pieces of fried tilapia, served with a to-die-for crunchy slaw, two mystery dipping sauces, and avocado all wrapped in a blanket of a warm flour tortilla. Definitely worth every penny. I went back for dinner with my boyfriend since I was so pleased with my takeout experience and let me just say, the place is adorable and the decor just reads authentic Mexican. First thing I noticed were the bins of fresh ingredients at the bar area/visible kitchen with a wood-burning stove: sticks of cinnamon, chili peppers, etc. I knew I was gonna love this place. After being greeted by all the servers and the head chef, we were lead to a cute outdoor patio in the back with a large tree and a couple of candlelit tables. Our waitress was super helpful with the menu and her suggestions were spot-on. Drinks: Got a margarita with mango and although I don't usually like them on the rocks, this was the best margarita I've had in a while. The waitress actually said even their sour mix is handmade from scratch. Boyfriend ordered "Morning Dew" which was essentially a can of Mountain Dew, a shot of some type of aged tequila, and a glass with ice. Mixing the two actually made sense. Appetizer: Ordered the crab fundido which was a hot fondue pot with chunky crab, tons of cheese, and cilantro to top it off, served with fresh corn tortilla chips, which you can tell were made from scratch right on the premises. (Still kicking myself for not ordering the guacamole, served El Vez style) Entrees: I got the Arranchera which was a perfectly seasoned flank steak with a bit of lime zest and the best sweet, smooth refried beans I've ever had. I was given fresh corn tortillas on the side if I wanted to make it a taco. Sweeet. Boyfriend got the waitress' suggestion of the sea bass, which was cooked perfectly and served on a creamy risotto-style bed of rice and sweet corn. The steak was amazing, but I still like the fish tacos better. Dessert: Had the brownie sundae. Sounds boring, right? Wrong. 1) Rich, decadent chocolate brownie on bottom, 2) layered with a cinnamon churro flavored ice cream, 3) topped with crunchy, salty homemade caramel popcorn, whipped cream and a cherry, 4) drizzled in a hot caramel sauce. AMAZING. A little small, but after the whole meal, I could barely move anyway. With tip, I think it all came to like $110 which I can honestly say was 100% worth it, down to every last detail. Cannot wait to try everything on the menu.

Found this gem on the Craft Beer crawl, and went back after we were all done. We loved it! The margarita was spicy and perfect, the guac portion was huge (as it should be for the price), and the tacos delicious. Only wish the tacos came with a side of rice & beans - $3.50 is a little steep!

This is probably my favorite Mexican spot in Philly. The fish tacos are fresh and flavorful, the carnitas tacos are also high on my list! Also consider ordering: a side of plantains with queso fresco, the hamachi ceviche, and the jicama salad. You really can't go wrong here. When the weather is nice the patio is fabulous!

I didn't know walking in that they have a back patio area, but for a cool September night the space is perfect. Large enough where you're not cramped, you can actually see the sky, and appropriately decorated. Truly great. Service here was some of the best I've had anywhere lately. Waitress was very nice, explained things well, and infused some personality. No complaints here. Had the guac and split fish tacos. Brought them out on separate plates for us. Nice touch. Guac was guac - kind of hard to mess that up, but didn't stand out as spectacular. Stone bowls are cool I guess but they frustrate me when I want more and make me look silly for scraping the last bits of green from the rough cracks. Over it. Tacos were damn good - worth $15 if you go that route for a meal. Had the arranchera (flank steak) as a main course. Steak was cooked perfectly; lots of time they are cooked too much but La Calaca lets it bleed a bit which is nice. Would've liked to see some more chimichurri on there though because I love the stuff and the dish could've used a bit more kick since refried beans in general are boring. Pickin' nit though since the dish was overall very good and worth ordering. Tried a bit of black bass as well. Awesome. Mexican fine dining right there, but I can't go into detail since I only had a bite or two. But it was cooked perfectly, was very light and something I figure they are known for around there. For good reason. Drink-wise they were running a Fall promo where you could try two slightly smaller sized margarita flavors for $10 total as long as you vote which you liked best. Red currant or mandarin. Not what I would think of as Fall flavors but whatever, I chose the red currant. Oso cancelled me out choosing the mandarin, which I thought was too light for cool evenings. But both were worth a go. Comparatively speaking La Calaca is best aligned with Lolita, although in a more comfortable space. Better than Xochitl all around and of a higher quality than Las Bugambilias albeit with a more focused menu.

The food is just amazing and it's close to the Arts museum, you can eat out and then enjoy the museum.

Frankly, I usually prefer my Mexican restaurants divey. But... La Calaca Feliz was super duper awesome. I have lived in AZ and TX, so I had low expectations. The food was authentic and delicious, the drinks were large and tasty, the atmosphere festive and fun and visually stimulating. Pro tip: the Chef's tasting is ridiculous. We had SO much food and tasted so many delicious options for only $29. Crazy. Loved my dinner. YAY!

I truly enjoyed the food and the outdoor space. I'm from California, so it goes without saying that I'm picky with my Mexican food. Although the food doesn't come close to Bay Area Mexican- it was delicious and the atmosphere was great. Would definitively come back

I loved everything so much I want to come back tomorrow and eat all the food I couldn't stuff in today. It was delicious! I almost don't want to post this so they don't get too busy and I can't come back. Guacamole was delish and was perfect with the Felix margarita. Loved the carnitas tacos bite I had of my boyfriends and my enchiladas de mariscos somehow managed to blend great Mexican flavor with super fresh seafood taste. I don't even like tres leches and it was melt in your mouth excellent!

Awesome! We came here and did not stop ordering food because everything was so good. Queso Fundido was super cheesy, served with warm tortillas. The house margs = YES, but the $7.50 price tag led me to a can of Tecate after one. We did the nachos because of the picture posted on Yelp. They looked the same - best nachos I've ever had. I ordered the fish tacos. Order the fish tacos. Go to this place. When you're in the dining room letting your food settle, look up and appreciate the decor. The wall murals and steer skull are badass.

This place is pretty amazing. The tacos are fantastic. I had the fish tacos, the carnitas tacos, the mushroom tacos...never was I disappointed. The place is reasonably priced, and the portions are good. You are overwhelmed by the amount of food you get at all, its just the right amount to fill you up. The sweet plantains are also amazing. They melt in your mouth :-) This last time we went, we also got the tuna ceviche, and it was so good. For someone who likes spice and fish, the ceviche is the way to go. This is definitely a must-go in the Fairmount neighborhood.

I came here last night with my husband. We ordered fish tacos and pork tacos, along with an appetizer and margaritas. The fish tacos were amazing! I recommend that dish to anyone. The appetizer was DELICIOUS as well. It was probably the best dish thing we ordered last night. It was something asparagus topped with an egg on flat bread. If you ask the waiter, she'll tell you. Speaking of the waiter, her name was Sam. She was very nice, but was not at all attentive. She never stopped by to ask how we were doing. I had to flag her down a few times but she still didn't come. I even had to tell another waiter about another order that I wanted, and later on I had to tell the manager that I wanted the check & my food packed to go. It was a busy night, that could've been her excuse, however she was attentive to other tables (who came in after us) That's the only reason why I'm giving this place 3 stars. Anyway, my husband didn't like his pork tacos, and he didn't like his margarita drink, which was something that had death whiskey in it. LOL. I enjoyed my meal. This place was a nice place to hang out with friends. The music could be really loud but once you start drinking, you won't even notice it. The decor is cool also. Anyways I recommend the fish tacos and Feliz margarita and the asparagus appetizer with an egg. Don't get the pork tacos!!

The first time I was here, it was for drinks and apps. I thought the drinks were fantastic, as was the guac & chips. However, knowing I'd be back for food, I held off on writing a review. I showed up on Saturday, a little earlier than prime dinner time (6:30pm) but was told there would be a 30 min wait for seating. Luckily, we scored two seats at the bar immediately. The thing with sitting at the bar, is that it's near the oven and this hot apps serving thing. Everything that came out of it passed our line of vision, making it soooooo hard to decide. Finally we settled on the chile rellenos, squash blossom tacos, guacamole and chips, and the special of the day: Scrapple tacos. Yup, you read that right. Everything was pretty damn good, especially cheese sauce that chile rellenos is swimming in. The scrapple taco was surprisingly not to heavy, and I think the drizzle of mustard on it was a nice touch. There are still many many menu items to be tried. I'll be revisiting soon.

Best. Margaritas. Ever. I have been there several times to just grab a margarita and it is always so worth it. I had dinner here once and it was good as well. I recommend this spot to everyone in Philly, not just the locals. Check it out.

I am not the biggest fan in the world of Mexican food, per se, but I tend to enjoy this spot, particularly for excellent margaritas and guacamole. I've never been displeased with a meal here.

I went here for my girlfriend's birthday party a few weeks ago. When I called to make reservations Zack was extremely nice & helpful in getting a large party in at 8pm on a Saturday, with one day notice. As the guest list grew and shrunk over the next 24 hours, he continued to be helpful and polite in setting up our party accordingly. He even helped me get a surprise birthday cake to my girlfriend with very short notice. The food and service were fantastic, the bacon shrimp was unreal, and the drinks were delicious and plentiful.

If you're looking for fancy Mexican, skip Distrito and El Vez and head here. As far as drinks the margaritas are always excellent and the beer list is decent. The guacamole is a standout as well as the chorizo fundido. The pork and fish tacos are excellent, but the mushroom tacos surprisingly may be the best.

After work party brought me here. Really friendly bartender made outstanding drinks. Nice location and decor. The fish tacos were great. Thought that the fried fish would be greasy but they certainly were not, they were crispy moist and fresh. The flank steak was very tender and flavorful and sat on top of very tasty re fried beans. The guacamole was as good as any I had in this city, the chips were very fresh and tasted like they were made there. Will come back.

Decent but nothing too memorable. Portions were small for the price and al pastor was a tad dry. Baja fish tacos only came with 2 tacos. There are not many other Mexican restaurants in the area, but I still prefer Que Chula and they deliver to my house.

As one of my friends put it, "The name of that restaurant is so fun to say!" Do you really need more reasons to choose a restaurant? Here's a few: Carnitas Tacos - Best I've ever had, and I lived in California for a while and found some pretty great back-of-the-Mexican-grocery-store taquerias there. The meat is succulent and juicy yet crisped on the outside. The flavor is just right. Add to that some avocado, salsa roja, and other standard toppings. Three tacos to a plate. Just right. Only real drawback is sometimes they're too juicy and the tortilla gets soggy, especially if you order it for take-out. Also, once in a while, they don't quite crisp the carnitas well enough for me, and then these tacos are a bit meh. Chicken Tacos - Also amazing. Before they added these to the menu, the same chicken, pickled cabbage, avocado, and queso was in an appetizer called Chicken Sopes. Instead of a tortilla, it was over a little crispy pancake type thing. I liked that version much better than the tacos, so I hope they bring those back. Elotes Loco - Every time I order it, people around ask, "What is that?" - "Crazy Corn hombre!" It's an ear of corn with all kinds of gooey good stuff like queso on it. Sweet Plantains are my dessert - queso fresco again? Hit me. The staff should get a nod here as well because they're awesome too. They're friendly and seem to really take care of everyone. I'm a regular, but I'm not just saying this based on how I'm treated. They take care of everyone and it shows.

After enough times dining out, you learn to recognize good omens. For instance, if you are at one of your favorite restaurants for lunch and you tell the manager (who you are friendly with) that you are going to XXXX for dinner and he goes "oh damn, that place rules". This would qualify as a good omen. What about when a restaurant puts pork 3 ways on a plate? Personally, I feel like bacon on something is cheating a bit. Now, top that same suckling pig with bacon and Chicharrón and you've got me. Another good omen. Enter La Calaca Feliz, the dinner prefaced by wonderful omens and was equally as delicious in reality. I want to say that this place has one of the coolest interiors I have ever seen. The walls are glowing with an awesome floral and mexican mural while the high ceilings and large window just make this place feel so open and light even when it's dark outside. Foodwise, I was floored. The meatballs stuffed with fresh cheese and cooked to mouth-watering perfect were just enough to get me ready for the fish tacos and the aforementioned pig 3 ways on a plate. The fish tacos were fried, a style I'm not normally a fan of but I've become a believer. They had perfect body and the radish and cabbage tossed with some lemon juice cut through the richness for a perfectly rounded flavor. The pig 3 ways, well, I'll let your imagination fill in those details. Honestly, this place is a serious winner. Fairmount is one of my lesser traveled sections of philly but now I've got a damn fine reason to come back.

We arrived on a very busy Friday night as the advance guard of a group of 6 COF's (Cranky Od Farts) and were seated graciously and quickly. Ordered Gimlets (vodka and gin); both were outstanding. Went with the tasting menu and enjoyed way too much delicious food served by excellent servers. We will definitely be back, but probably on a weekday when the din is less. Otherwise, it's pretty close to perfect.

Came here with @Andrea F. and a few friends for my birthday and had a delicious meal paired with a crisp, white sangria and a fresh watermelon margarita. Downside, these drinks were expensive; NYC prices in Philadelphia didn't make sense to me even though I thought they tasted great and we all drank our fill disregarding the prices at the time. Started with the guacamole which was good but didn't stand out more than the kind I make in my own kitchen, but maybe that just says something about my recipe being outstanding. Ordered the famous fish tacos and, indeed, I wasn't let down. Phenomenal. I devoured them along with a cheesy, grilled corn on the cob that we split. Shit was good good good good. Overall the food is impeccable and on point, as are the drinks and each detail that went into their South of the Border inspired decor straight down to their hot and spicy salsa. It's an inviting place and a great asset to the Fairmount neighborhood. Outdoor seating for when the weather's nice and good for groups. La Calaca Feliz borders 5 stars if I could swallow their prices easier.

The happy hour is pretty solid, but the margaritas weren't very strong - stick with the sangria here. Also, happy hour runs from 4-7 p.m. even though the website only advertises 4-6 p.m. The extra hour was a nice surprise! The baja fish tacos were delicious, and it was great that the dish came with a free Tecate; apparently this is the Monday special. I would have expected to get three tacos based on other comparable restaurants (Distrito, Lolita), but the two tilapia tacos were fresh and filling. I had previously had the mushroom tacos, which were also pretty tasty, but not as filling. Our waitress and bartender were friendly and efficient, and our party appreciated that the happy hour specials were available at both the bar and tables. My only complaint is that the weekday specials aren't advertised - it would be awesome to have them listed on the website or via social media. Regardless, we will be back!

This is an all-around solid Mexican experience, kinda like Danny Trejo(but with less murder). The salsas are fine. The guacamole is good. The black bass is delicious. The mushroom tacos are acceptable. If I could compare La Calaca Feliz to a Danny Trejo movie, I'd say it is Machete. There's enough bang for your buck do make you glad that you went. Just in case you are a simpleton and don't know of Danny Trejo - imdb.com/name/nm0001803

No complaints here! The ambiance is lovely, the service was great even for our large group and the food was splendid. The most memorable portion of the meal: the Brussels sprouts. Mmm. If you like Brussels sprouts, these are worth a visit. The chili margarita I enjoyed quite a bit. The tacos were yummy but definitely not the best I've had in Philly. That's not a poor reflection on them - Philly and surrounding areas just have some very good tacos!! All in all, I wouldn't make a special trip here but would definitely return when I'm hankering for tacos and guacamole in the Fairmount area. And if I lived down there, forget about it. I'd go a lot!

After waiting a few months for the crazy buzz to die down, I'm glad we finally got to check out La Calaca. They have a done a great job updating the space from a Italian restaurant to Mexican! I love the murals and the banquettes along the wall. Plus there are 2 TVs in the bar area. Side note: the doors were open to the courtyard (due to the unseasonably war weather) and has about 5 -7 additional tables. It's a lovely space and this will be a desired spot when it gets especially warm! I went with the Feliz margarita with blood orange. It was pretty strong. For a few dollars more, the chiquita margarita (their skinny margarita) is very fresh tasting. They also have a small but solid draft list. The short rib nachos are really good - tons of cheese and toppings. The pulpo skewers were also a nice starter: grilled with a nice flavor from the accompaniments. The fish tacos are excellent - a big piece of fried fish topped with slaw. They come with two sauces - an avocado crema and a chipotle mayo. The avocado crema was my favorite. My husband had the crab and shrimp enchiladas, which he said were very good. La Calaca is bound to draw comparisons to Isabel. Having dined at both now, I would rate the food equally. Both are a little pricey for the amount of food, but the quality is excellent. Isabel has the benefit of BYOB, but La Calaca has a beautiful courtyard and can definitely accommodate larger parties. Either way, after the years Fairmount has lacked a Mexican restaurant, it's awesome to have 2!

Great service, tasty food - I'll def. be back! I am so glad that I came because it was phenomenal! This was my first time and I loved everything about my meal here! One of my best friends was visiting from out of town and she loves Mexican food so I decided to take her here since I heard so many great things about the menu and service. Chips and salsa - fresh chips that taste as if they were made just moments before being served to the table. The salsa is a bit on the spicy side which I LOVE! Main dishes - My friend and I ordered two types of taco dishes and shared them. She ordered the Baja Fish Tacos and I got the Carnita Pork Tacos. I liked the pork ones the best because the fish ones are fried but both are served on corn tortillas which I prefer and that also makes it much more authentic. Drinks- I enjoyed the Garcia Margarita to start with and it was very tasty. It was a classic 'rita on the rocks! The second drink I tried was called the Cumberland. It is something a bit different than other tequila cocktails I have tried. It was a refreshing drink with mint, cucumber, tequila and lime -amazing. We skipped dessert because we ate too much during the main meal but I would have liked to try one of their signature desserts. Well, I guess I can do that at my next visit!

Probably some of the best nachos I've ever had were at this unassuming little place tucked in next to the Beehive hair salon on Fairmount. It's a very nice reincarnation of the tacky Italian restaurant that preceded it. We were there for happy hour and each had two margaritas - I accidentally ordered the "lite" margarita at first, and it was pretty gross. The regular margarita, with which I washed it down, was stellar.

I really really want to like this place... my partner loves their margaritas and the atmosphere, so I made a reservation for her birthday dinner, and sadly our experience was less than awesome. Made a reservation for Thursday night at 7:15. Arrived at 7:18 (so, yes, technically, late). The boo and I were encouraged by the hostess to grab a drink at the bar, where we were promptly ignored and had to literally wave down the bartender, who was leaning against the back of the bar. We watched 4 other tables of 2 be seated before us, and finally got a table at 8:00pm... 45 min after our "reserved" time. Then add to that the sting of an even further limited vegetarian menu than the last time we were at La Calaca, and the very weird timing of our meal (we had 15 min of empty table between our app and dinner)... disappointment. The food is good, but really disappointing to be seated 45 min late and feel forgotten about. :(

If you want Mexican food, go to south Philly. If you want over-priced hipster tacos with some nice decorations, go here. They were quite tolerant of the large group I was with, though.

Woohoo, Mexican in Fairmount! We went into Calacas with high expectations. And for the most part they hit the spot. The fish tacos were solid, the carnitas tacos were pretty great, and the corn was delicious. And warm, endless chips. Yum. The staff was attentive and friendly, but really worked for the up-sell. My only major complaints were drink-related. The margaritas were mostly ice, unfortunately, and didn't feel worth the $7.50. To that end, when we arrived happy hour was going on for drinks ordered at the bar, but the deal didn't extend to the tables, which was kind of a bummer. These are minor issues, though, considering Tecate is $3. All in all, a good choice, and perhaps a new neighborhood staple.

I thought I'd had good mexican food. And then I came here. But was craving nachos one day and since close to where I lived my friend suggested we go here. OMG what a great decision! Since then been there twice just because its too good. The nachos are some of the best I've had in Philly. Piled waay high and with all the good stuff on it. Ive also tried the tacos - the pork and fish. Both Amazing. SO soft and melt in your mouth. Ive had tacos at other places in Philly but none that I actually remember and wonder when I'll have again. Plus service was good. Atmosphere also very lively and upbeat. And whenever I've passed by the bar has always been packed. If you're in Philly and looking for good Mexican food - try it out. You won't regret it.

I'm always happy when a new Mexican place opens up in the city so I went with some friends to check it out last night. We had reservations for 7:30pm (note: they only take reservations for parties of 6 or more). The bar area is small and cramped and was packed. Once we squeezed past that we were lead into a large, stylish dining room with big round booths to accommodate large groups. Our server was friendly and attentive, our waters were refilled multiple times without having to ask. The food is delish. I started out with an order of nachos split with a friend. It's big enough to be an app for 2 people. I'd describe the nachos as fancy without being pretentious - fresh jalapenos, some other type of pepper, refried black beans, melted cheese with microgreens on top - and NO soggy chips! The plantains were well seasoned and tasty. I had the carnitas tacos which were divine with flavorful juicy tender pork. I sampled my friend's campechano tlayuda (flatbread-like with shortrib, chorizo, beans & queso). The flavor was good but the crust was too chewy. I guess a thin and crispy crust isn't possible with all that stuff weighing it down. I had no complaints with my Feliz margaritas. Nice addition to the Fairmount area!

Popped in here today with my girlfriend after we got our hairs did at Beehive Salon. Locational convenience and the sign outside advertising fresh fruit Margaritas were our reasons for choosing this place, but there are a ton more reasons that I would go back. First of all, this is one of the friendliest restaurants I've ever been to in Philly. Every single employee had a kind word on our way in and out of the door, and our waitress was exceptional for such a moderately priced place. She was happy to explain the menu to us without our having to ask, and when we did have questions (my girlfriend speaks almost no Spanish, and while I understand it fairly well, I've never eaten it) she gave great, informative answers without making us feel silly for asking. We both had a glass of the white sangria, which was amazingly flavorful and packed with yummy fresh fruit. I followed with the crab fundidos and she had the baja fish taco. I felt that we both got more than enough food for our money and it was absolutely of quality. Our waitress was attentive throughout the meal without nagging and split our bill at the end with no problems. Definitely one of the best places I've ever stumbled upon by accident and absolutely one of the best bars or restaurants in the Fairmount area for your money.

Usually Yelp reviews guide me to the right spots...La Calaca was certainly not on the top of my list. In order the fig and bacon guacamole was below average and not at all flavorful. I have made much better guac at home. The margaritas were weak, watery and sweet which for me is the worst of all worlds. The verde enchiladas were tolerable but did not fill me up. The pork belly tacos were the best thing I tried but may have only been good because the rest of the food was unremarkable. The tacos had a bit of an asian flare which was cool and different however. Service was fine but for the price tag, not at all worth it.

Hands down BEST mexican restaurant I have ever been to! Pork tacos (carnitas) are awesome! They also have mexican flatbread pizzas made on a thin tortilla that they cook in a wood burning stove: the mushroom one is amazing. They serve guacamole in a molcajete. They have an outdoor garden area in the back that is really nice. LOVE la calaca!!! Make a reservation as they are always booked. You can have a drink at the bar while you wait although there aren't a lot of bar stools. This place has awesome food and drinks - especially the margaritas! The cocktail with cucumber and white tequila is sooo good and refreshing! The bartender makes great drinks and is nice and friendly without being intrusive. $3 tecate cans all the time are a great deal. They also have late night happy hour where all the drinks are $2 off. All of the dishes are about $10-15 except for the entrees.

I loved this place!!! Service was great, atmosphere was really fun, and the food was excellent. Can't wait to go back when it gets warmer to enjoy their patio seating. Definitely recommended!!!

Finally, a Mexican restaurant in Fairmount. A good one, even! This place is high-end and priced accordingly. If you're getting a margarita, consider upgrading it to Corralejo Blanco tequila. The seasonal fruit margaritas (such as watermelon in the summer time) are excellent. The fish tacos here are a favorite of mine. Now if we could just get a decent sit-down Chinese-american restaurant in Fairmount too.

Great food, cute decor and friendly, fast service. No free chips and salsa for the table though ;( Chorizo Fundido- deilcious. Then again, who doesn't love melted cheese and chorizo. Fish Tacos- 2 tacos with large fried , perfectly cooked pieces of tilapia over a pickled cabbabge slaw. Only downfall- didn't come with salsa or guacamole, but delicious nonetheless. Pretty busy for a Thursday night, but we had reservations so were seated quickly. Comfy semi-circle booth to accommodate 5 of us. The bar area is pretty narrow though so it's not conducive to standing around. Definitely will be back again!

I went here for brunch on Mother's Day and enjoyed my food quite a food. This time I got a Bloody Marias (Bloody Mary with tequila), Oberon, and a Headwater Pale Ale and ordered the eggs benedict with chorizo and pork belly. Excellent work, by the staff. Hospitable staff, attentive and generous bar tender. Lovely establishment, really. Just as good for dinner and brunch.

A cute spot for solid Mexican. The tortilla soup was so flavorful and surprisingly filling, it was lovely. The rest of our food lacked flavor and sadly, we asked for salt and pepper to add a bit of punch to it. Overall, it was good. We enjoyed their Mountain Dew tequila drink combo - really fun.

When my friend (who was visiting from out-of-town) said she was craving Mexican for dinner, I knew I had to take her here. We were in no rush and popped in without reservations. It was an hour wait so we grabbed stools at the bar and ordered some drinks. Once seated, we started off with the guacamole - it was just as good as I remembered. For dinner, I had the carnitas tacos with a side of rice and beans.. while my friend went with the chicken enchiladas. I really like street style tacos and these were packed with flavor. The tacos looked small, but were filling. Since I also got a side of rice and beans, I was only able to finish 2 of the 3 tacos. I also tried a bite of the enchiladas - they were good and something I'd consider getting in the future.

I've been excited to try this place for awhile now. Great atmosphere and clean, interesting decor. Get passed the cozy bar area and the back opens up to a spacious dining area with high ceilings, mural artwork and cool lighting. So many Mexican places center decor on the kitchy side and it was refreshing to sit within a more mature but unpretentious setting. (My one remark upon seating is that for as nice a place as it was, they had plain old white paper napkins for the place settings...invest in linen roll ups! It suits you more!) We arrived around 5ish and were the first ones seated, so needless to say service was attentive. Quite a few apps caught our eye on the menu including the octopus and the crab fundido but since we were newbies we figured we should try to guacamole. It came out fresh, flavorful and just a tad of extra heat, which was all good by me! The chips were fresh and toasty and the house salsa was good. The menu isn't huge but definitely enough to choose from. I ordered the Enchiladas Mariscos because I couldn't pass up crab, shrimp and a promised cream sauce. The fiance ordered the Enchiladas con Pollo in the Mole sauce. We ordered the side of Mexican corn (which our server nicely offered to cut in half for sharing) and a side of black beans and rice. The corn was excellent - charred, rolled in a creamy mayo and dusted with Mexican cheese. Yum! My seafood enchilada actually came in a red sauce with only ribbons drizzled with cream and I believe a tad of mole. While the chunks of seafood were delicious, I was bummed about the red sauce because it tasted more marinara. I would have chosen the mole or a green Chile sauce instead. My guy's mole was good but I have to admit that I've had better tasting moles. I asked for a side of sour cream but they told me they serve a variation of it with cream and cheese. It was decadent and creamy and the perfect addition to the rice and beans! (Ask for it!) I enjoyed one margarita over my meal - the Garcia, as suggested by our server. I added blood orange to it. All drinks are housemade and the one I had was made well. We were too full for dessert but the churro ice cream sounded off the hook. All in all, a welcome atmosphere for dining out with friends. Our particular meal alone teetered closer to a 3.5 for me but that is partially our faults for ordering standard fare and not branching out more. I would go back and order a bunch of the good looking appetizers and get more creative with my drinks.

I have never had a bad experience here. I love the chorizo fundido, the crabmeat fundido, and the fish tacos. This place seriously has some of the best fish tacos I have had (on the east coast---I say this only because I don't want to hear complaints from someone who grew up in the Southwest). The crabmeat fundido is loaded with real crabmeat, thus making it both delicious and a decent value for the price. I also think this place has one of the greatest happy hours going. For $5 you can get either 2 meat tacos or 1 fish taco. The drink specials are cheap too. I would strongly recommend paying a visit for happy hour, because it is so good. Finally, make reservations. This place gets crowded. They are on Open Table, which makes it easier if you decide to go last minute.

I made our reservation for La Calaca Feliz via OpenTable, which is always a plus in my book - I wish other restaurants would get on board, for 6:30pm. We actually ended up with more time than expected and after browsing through the neighborhood, we decided to head into the restaurant around ten after and wait at the bar. We put our names in and the hostess offered us a table, very accommodating. La Calaca has an interesting set up and beautiful decor along with patio/out front seating, we however dined inside. We started with the ceviche rojo and guacamole. We were a bit nervous about the ceviche with beets but it is very well done and perhaps my favorite yet. The guacamole was just okay, I've had better (but most definitely have had worse). We shared the chorizo and carnitas tacos. All tacos come a la carte but they will add rice or beans if asked. The tacos were very good and the meat so flavorful but I think a slightly thicker tortilla may make for a more sturdy taco. We also ordered a side of plantains for a bit of sweetness, they were everything I had hoped for. I cannot begin to describe the amazing-ness that is their white sangria and cinnamon churro vanilla ice cream, both are most orders so save room for dessert (we boxed some taco).. BF even liked the coffee and he is quite the coffee snob. Side note - I never once felt rushed as other yelpers have mentioned, in fact we ended up dining for well over an hour and a half.

nice new addition to art museum area. parking is so-so, but was able to find a close one even though it was a snowy saturday night. had a regular margarita, it was better than your local chilis/don pablo's. wait for dinner can be a while, so call ahead/make rez if you can. dining area is towards the back and it looks like they are gonna have outdoor area during the warm weather. probably looks like cool spot to have drinks. dinner consisted of the mushroom flatbread (delish), elote (mediocre, i still like dos for this), pulpo (only 3 peices, but it was very tender and enjoyed the flavor), mushroom taco was yummy (nice change of pace from tofu or fish, i liked the asparagus in it), fish taco was just ok. still can't find a place in philly that wowed me for fish tacos (my cousin makes it better). thought the bill would be more but pretty surprised that got a pretty good dinner/drink for about 40 bucks, if you order right. maybe will wait to check this place out again in the summer days or catch a happy hour.

How did something so beautiful land on Fairmount Avenue? Having never been inside Iluminaire I'll never know what kind of construction Calaca Feliz went through, but when I entered I was blown away by the lighting, the colors, and the architecture of the restauarant squeezed into such a tiny spot on Fairmount. The front area has bar seating and an open kitchen where you can see everything prepared. What I assume was the pizza oven from Illuminare remains in tact and I am pretty sure it melted the cheese on my tasty nachos. The back of the restaurant opens up into cathedral ceilings with beautiful stained glass windows, a gilded ceiling, and dia de los muertos murals on the walls. It was a bit cold to be outside, but I could see that the little courtyard they had was inviting and romantic. And I loved the little star lamps that hung from the ceiling. I was already sold before I ordered. That said, when I did order, I chose the nachos, jicama salad, fish tacos, and hamachi ceviche. The nachos didn't stand a chance which meant that I was a little too full to finish the rest of my food. By far, the freshest nacho platter you'll have for a reasonable price. Chopped tomatoes, fresh jalepenos, roasted peppers, black beans, and hot melted cheese come bubbling hot to your table in a deceivingly petite crock. The boo and I didn't leave many survivors. As we were splitting everything, I was delighted when our waitress brought out everything we ordered in two evenly split dishes. They created individual taco and salad plates out of the jicama salad and fish tacos. Even though we were splitting, the taco was substantial. Two sauces of an avacado and chipotle variety accompanied the fried tilapia taco topped with avacado, radishes, and lime. Crunchy and refreshing, the taco even survived until dinner the next day when it was eaten cold - and still delicious! This place is doing everything right. Fresh margaritas, good food, and beautiful scenery...plus their staff knows the menu. I definitely will return with more room for drinks.

Very cool Mexican joint on Fairmount. We don't come out this way often but will start to from now on. We started off with a tres generaciones flight and a tecate, wonderful combination. We had the ceviche roja, asparagus pizza, octopus skewers, and guac for appetizers. All tasted very good. My wife had the black bass which was served with rice and asparagus and was light on the uptake. Awesome awesome entree. The only meal I didnt care for too much was my entree, the fish tacos. The fish was tilapia but it was fried. Baked tilapia would have tasted much better. Our waitress was nice but a bit too aggressive on the upselling. Otherwise, great place.

I'm basing this review off of their passover tasting menu so i can't speak all that well to the authenticity of the texmex food here; however, dinner was delicious. The salmon "tostadas" and brisket "tacos" resembled more of a delectable ceviche and a lettuce wrap, respectively, but were equally wonderful. The matzo ball soup was not anything like Bubby's but was original, spicy, and delicious (chili-based instead of chicken). The holiday menu was very creative and each course, save the dessert (but who really can make a tasty passover dessert anyway?), was memorable. We shared a side of the plantains, as well, which were out of this world. Add $2 tecates at the bar during Phils games and you've got yourself a solid experience. I'm looking forward to going back ASAP to try some of their more authentic mexifoodstuffs.

A couple of friends and I had dinner here last night. I wasn't going to make reservations (Sunday at 5:30, why bother?) However, the place was actually pretty busy when we arrived, and packed by the time we left. Two of us had the Red Sangria, which was refreshing. The fruit was put in the glass last minute, so we weren't eating the soggy fruit that has been fermenting in the wine for the past few days. To start we got the guacamole. It was good, but I can never understand why guac is so expensive at restaurants ($10). The salsa that it came with was chipoltle-y, not too spicy, and really interesting. I liked it. My dining companions both got the fish tacos, which I had a bite of. It was good, but National Mechanics still wins for my top fish taco choice. I had the seafood enchiladas, which to my disappointment came in corn tortillas. Oh well, my fault. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. We also got a side of sweet plantains which were pretty yummy. For dessert, Tres Leches, and a scoop of Prickly Pear Sorbet. My friends also ordered hot chocolate, which I didn't try. The atmosphere here is nice, with beautiful murals and and an amazing ceiling. The patio would also be great in the spring and summer. While not fancy, this place is more date night or nice night out than a "lets go grab dinner" kind of place. The meal wasn't cheap, but not too expensive either considering how much we ordered. $95 pre tip for three of us.

I was prepared to fall totally head-over-heels for this place, but I was left feeling just satisfied, not in any way overwhelmed or in awe. I dined there on a recent Saturday night with my Most Significant Other, and we enjoyed the duck en nogada plus the carnitas and squash tacos. We would have loved to see some kind of chicken or beef taco on that menu, although we're intrigued to return perhaps for the chorizo taco. We were in and out in just over an hour, which as you might observe from my previous reviews, irritates me to no end. I need time to savor my meal and, more importantly, the delightful company that I keep. ;) And while the dining area is lively and intimate, it's also loud and cramped - made me feel very anxious when we sat down, being so warm and so close to our table-neighbors. I think we would go back to try La Calaca Feliz again, but we're not running...

We came here with a good sized group in the middle of the week. Making reservations was a breeze and I was surprised at how busy it was here. Parking was easy to find on the street but I can imagine it's tough on weekends. The folks who work here are friendly and helpful. We really loved our cocktails especially the spicy one but they're definitely not cheap. The food was good but we all agreed we were expecting more considering the prices. Would come here again.

We went on a Friday night, it was crowded but our reservation got us right in on time. Thankfully, cause the area reserved for waiting is terribly designed, and super small. The guacamole was some of the best I've ever had and my carnitas tacos were to die for. I would definitely go back.

First: the decor here is absolutely great. I think the brightly muraled walls give eating here an extra sense of fun. The food: my boyfriend and I both ordered the Enchiladas with Ranchera salsa. He got the Chicken and I the Mariscos and we both thought they were delicious. We had come in very hungry so we got the Mexican Chocolate Cake which is topped with roasted banana ice cream and is surrounded by passionfruit sauce. The cake and ice cream were great but if I were to order again I'd ask for it without the sauce or just not as much. It was just waaayyyy to strong of a flavor for the dish. Sort of tasted like melted-down sour passionfruit-flavored hard candies. Overall: cool place, good food, would return and try more of the menu! (Especially that churro ice cream)

Kinda wish they made the guacamole in front of us and the swordfish taco with the plantain was a bit confusing to the taste buds....Now that I got the (small) negatives out of the way, I'll explain what this place does absolutely right! When you enter, it seems really small and cramped but they have a larger dining room in the back which accommodates a wide range of groups from small to large. They also had outdoor seating right outside the dining room which was beautifully lit reminiscent of a beer garden. Their feliz margarita was solid and the baja fish taco was perfectly battered and fried without being mushy on the inside. The wait staff was more than helpful and extremely friendly when we had questions. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and it is definitely a place I plan on recommending to others.

Bright colors, great service and great food! It's a little on the noisy side and kind pricey, but we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The chips were just average, but the guacamole was delicious and the salsa was pleasantly different with a bit of a roasted flavor to them. The fish tacos were tasty and not too oily as feared, and the carnita tacos were awesome. The tres leches cake wasn't as amazing as people on Yelp made it sound, but it was still good. People seem to really like them for brunch so we'll be back!

I came here with two friends last night. I called ahead to make a reservation but they were booked until 9:45 so we decided to walk over around 7:30 and put our name on the list. There was no wait! We were seated in the outside patio - which was really nice. Now, onto the food. We ordered chips and guacamole of course, it was super fresh. If you are with a group larger than 4, I would recommend ordering two guacs. I then ordered the fish tacos and corn. I liked the fish tacos but I think the corn was a little over cooked and had too much of the cheese and cream on it. I was very full from dinner. I ordered the white sangria, my friends has the watermelon margarita and we were all very happy with our drinks. I would definitely return.

NOM! I visited this cute and colorful place for brunch while in Philly for a weekend. It was so delicious! For being such a highly reviewed place, it wasn't too crowds for a Sunday morning. We got seated right away and all ordered some bloody Marias (a bloody Mary with tequila instead of vodka). They were flavorful, spices, and delish! Beware of the chipotle salt they put on the rim- it will clear out your sinuses. Chips and a great smoky chipotle salsa are complimentary. I ordered the huevos rancheros, which was wonderful. Two fried eggs, pico de gallo, refried beans, and some other deliciousness. I also got some guac to put on the huevos and it was great. I wish I lived in Philly to come back and try this place out some more! The fish tacos looked amazing. Next time....

THIS REVIEW IS FOR FAIRMOUNT FOOD CRAWL ONLY SPOT 3 Neighbor to the sandwich store, the Mrs. and I continued our journey to La Calaca. Food - Pork Carnitas Taco / Beverage - Lavender Scented Tito's Lemonade. Hands down, the best alcoholic beverage of the day. The lemonade perfectly sweetened without being overly-sugary and the lavender just enough to kiss your tongue. The taco contained a ton of flavor with the juicy pork, cilantro and guacamole on top of a crispy flat tortilla shell that was just a tad too salty. Despite the slightly heavy handed seasoning, we planned on returning later at the conclusion.

We visited La Calaca Felix as part of the craft beer crawl. Starting the crawl on an empty stomach was not a great idea. We decided La Calaca would be a perfect option. We started with the guacamole it is heavy on the lemon which I found to be delicious however my fiance found it over powering and he was unable to eat much more than a few chips. Lucky me! The chips that came with the guac we warm which made them really stand out and even more enjoyable. We also had carnitas tacos, elote loco, and sweet plantains. Everything was fantastic and authenyic tasting. The restaurant was pretty empty except for a party that wrapped up as we sat down and a party outside that looked like a private party space. There are two unisex bathrooms right at the top of the stairs after the bar area. I really liked the sky theme painted throughout. This is a great spot to satisfy your craving for mexican.

So I walked into La Calaca Feliz the other day and had a seat at the bar for some food and drinks. What I liked about La Calaca Feliz: The bartenders are friendly and make great margaritas. The guacamole traditional is creamy and has chucks of avocado :) The carnitas tacos are probably top three carnitas I have ever had, the meat is flavorful and moist with focus on the pork. What I really was craving was the grilled corn, it was covered in cheese, chili and butter/cream. I enjoyed it but wish it had a little more lime touch. The so-so about La Calaca Feliz The squash blossom enchilada was average in my opinion...maybe that's because I wanted something different and I am not super familiar with squash...I liked the chili verde which accompanies the dish but the squash didn't really do anything for me. Overall I enjoyed my meal/experience at La Calaca Feliz...I will certainly be back to try more tacos and the tortilla soup.

We made reservations here on Friday night at 9pm and glad we did. There's a bar to the left when you walk in, but past the host/hostess stand, the room opens up to a larger dining area and an outdoor patio off to the side. We sat in the middle of the dining area and it is super loud. It's large so the sound just bounces off the walls, but because it's an open space, it makes it difficult to hear someone sitting at your table. For drinks, I had the three chili margarita and it was fantastic. They infuse a jalapeno or two into the drink, so that as you continue to sip on it, it maintains its spiciness. It wasn't the spiciest I've had, which is perfectly fine, as this one was delicious from the first sip to the last. We ordered the nachos for appetizer and they were on point. The homemade chips were warm and smothered in queso, black beans, chilies, and jalapenos. Beware, for those who do not like really spicy things, their jalapenos will set your mouth on fire. It's not on their actual menu, but our waitress told me I could order the veggie enchiladas when I asked her what vegetarian options she recommends. I opted for them and they were decent - nothing fancy or memorable, but a solid meal nonetheless. I chose the ranchero sauce (you get three sauces to choose from - ranchera, green chile, or mole) and it was fine. I also got a side of rice and beans to mix in with the enchiladas, which tasted great with the ranchera sauce and the rest of the dish. Overall, a very solid spot in the Fairmount neighborhood. I'll definitely come back!

My third visit to La Calaca Feliz took place on a Sunday afternoon around 4:30. Dining Partner and I made unnecessary reservations (for the OT points) and were seated by ourselves on the back porch. I really do love the ambiance of this place and there's no better way to spend summer than eating Mexican food and drinking a Corona in the open air. We ordered traditional guacamole and chips to start, both were delish. Dining Partner then devoured the chicken enchilada with a HUGE side of refried beans while I scarfed down three juicy chicken tacos. I'm one of those weird people that much prefers flour tortillas over corn tortillas. I didn't have the option here which was kind of a bummer, but I've somehow managed to survive since then. The service was friendly and attentive and we left satisfied and happy.

The guacamole is probably one of the best in the city. We almost licked the bowl. They have a $5 happy hour food menu, so the SO and I also tried the chorizo fundido- cheese and chorizo that was warm and gooey and flavorful with peppers. It came with warm tortillas. The chicken enchiladas are a must, and I personally preferred them with the Ranchera sauce. Service was prompt. Ambience and decor was funky. I'm so glad this place is walking distance from my apartment.

Back in Philly and in the mood for happy hour with my wife. She recommended La Calaca, so off we went. The happy hour menu is fantastic. The regular menu is equally good. The Lobster Tacositas were tasty (a mini version of a lobster roll) and had just the proper amount of spice. The contrasting textures made me muy feliz. The nachos with brisket were a welcome surprise. They came out of the oven and had the right crunchiness. The cheese and the toppings did not overwhelm the crunchy, fresh-out-of-the-oven chips. The highlight tonight was the Carnitas Tacos. These were the best carnitas I've had in the states. They had a little burn on the outside but maintained their juicy quality nonetheless. The bartender also recommended the fish tacos (they are prepared with plantain before the frier). There are also a couple of flatbreads on the menu. Our love of asparagus pushed us to order the asparagus option with manchego béchamel. It was fantastic. The service was great. The bartender was attentive but not annoying. There was only one mistake all afternoon. The asparagus flatbread was delivered to the bar with jalapeños, although we ordered them without. However, we just picked them out of my wife's half and placed them into mine and thoroughly enjoyed the dish. I know Calaca has been around for a bit. It still remains a great place for solid Mexican staples in Philly. There are tons of fresh ingredients and carefully prepared dishes; you won't find heavy-handed Tex-Mex dishes a-la Chilli's here. I will be back for more items on the menu.

We came here with the Dine Out for Life fundraising event this year. We started with the Guacamole with fig and bacon. It was a little lime-y for my taste, and I have come to the decision that I much prefer traditional guacamole to one with extra flavors thrown in. It wasn't bad, but was not my taste. I was a little disappointed with the salsa as well. It was smokey, but there was not any heat to it at all. I also tried the Hamachi Ceviche. It tasted good, but the little piles of ceviche on top of the tortillas were not what I was really looking for. Each separate tortilla would have made for a good amuse bouche, but I don't usually eat ceviche with crackers, and prefer it without the crunch. Enough of all of that. Remember, this is a 4 star review. The Black Bass. DELICIOSO. This is a flagship dish if I ever saw one. It is served with crab, asparagus, corn, and rice. The fish was flaky and well cooked. The flavors worked perfectly together, sort of creamy. There was loads of crab on the plate with the fish. This is a well thought out, upscale dish. I tasted the other dishes that people got at my table, and I made the right choice getting this, it was my favorite. The fish tacos were tasty as well, but my first recommendation would be the bass. The fish tacos are talapia crusted with plantains. This makes for a much heavier fish taco than I am used to. It's an interesting taste, it is absolutely good. The tres leche was very good. Practically dripping, moist, rich. The fruit that it came with was good, but I liked eating it separate from the cake, rather than with it. The sorbet was tart and tasty. The guava was my favorite.

I was torn between three and four stars for this place. The big guacamole bowl made us think we would have a large enough portion for all four of us. It was maybe two avocados. We had the crab guacamole and were expecting a larger portion. We ordered Chorizo Fundido as well and it was very good. The peppers were perfectly sauteed and the chorizo was charred to perfection. I tried the Garcia margarita and it tasted incredibly watered down. I tried my friend's house 'Feliz Margarita' an it tasted a lot better. I had the baja fish tacos and they were pretty good. The fish was heavily breaded and pretty flavorless. I did enjoy the sauces they provided. I would have been satisfied with half the portion of fish on each taco. It kind of reminded me of a fish filet you could order with fish and chips wrapped in a tortilla. The elotes loco made the entire meal for me. I have never had 'crazy corn on the cob' before and it was so full of flavor. The lime mayo and queso fresco complemented each other perfectly. The service was excellent. The decor was very Día de Muertos. I hate bringing price into reviews...However....For the price, I would just go to El Vez instead. It's about the same with better guacamole portion sizes and much better margaritas.

Everything is average except the drinks. They're below average. Maybe if you're in the neighbourhood and really need Mexican food it works, otherwise I see no reason to go when there's so many better places in Philly.

If I could give this restaurant 10 stars, I would! It hit the trifecta... Perfect service, atmosphere, and food! The perfect service hit us as soon as we walked in the door. The hostess was extremely friendly to us, and multiple waiters and waitresses said hello and welcomed us as we were brought to our table. In addition, the general manager came over numerous times to check on us and other tables and on the way out, waitresses and cooks thanked us and told us to have a good night! The atmosphere is unique as well, unexpected for Fairmount. There are murals on the walls, and it is brightly decorated. Luckily, we had a corner table in the back and could take it all in. Now, of course for the most important part... The food. Easily one of the best Mexican meals I've ever eaten anywhere, and my partner agreed. Here's the rundown of what we ate. 1. This is an insiders tip. It's not on the menu, but make sure you order the chips and salsa for only $1.75. They use a special kind of pepper, and it was delicious. It had just a little bit of smokiness to it. 2. Chicken tortilla soup. Bold flavor, and substantial portion. 3. Mushroom tacos. 2 to 3 different types of mushroom, with asparagus and marinated in a delicious lemon vinaigrette. A unique taco I've never had before! 4. Cauliflower taco. Also a taco I have never had before. It had nopales, guac, a little smoky salsa, and the cauliflower. 5. But they save the best for last. Make sure you have room for dessert. I had the most delicious spiced Mexican chocolate cake with chocolate crumble, topped with guava sorbet. It is even more delicious than it sounds! Okay, enough of my gushing. Make your next reservation at this place!

This restaurant was a wonderful find in the Fairmount area. After a day at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, my boyfriend and I walked a couple blocks north to grab some dinner. As soon as we entered, I knew I was going to enjoy our time there--the décor was on point: a wall lined with different types of exported tequila and bins of spices lined up above their kitchen next to a fire oven and Spanish music playing in the background (I'm from California, so I'm very familiar with the Mexican culture and it felt very close to that!). We were seated in an intimate corner and had a great server. She answered my questions clearly and offered me great suggestions for margaritas. I really enjoyed the Garcia margarita. I did expect to get a little more for the amount I was paying for it ($13). Food we ordered: 1. Fig and Bacon Guacamole: This also comes with Cabrales blue cheese and hazelnuts. We were intrigued with the combination, but was a little hesitant about it, so we asked tons of questions about it. She explained how the fig added a sweetness to the guac and how it was actually the most popular--so we went for it. AND we loved it! The blue cheese and bacon were obviously phenomenal and the hazelnuts added an extra crunch. I loved the sticky sweet taste that the fig added to the guac--I highly recommend trying this! 2. Baja Fish Tacos: delicious. I always get worried that fried breaded fish is going to be oily, but this was crispy and delicious. I enjoyed everything about it including the sauces to dip the tacos in! 3. Brisket Enchiladas: my boyfriend ordered this dish and we just had to share! It was delicious as well. It's in a red sauce and the meat was tender and flavorful. 4. Black Beans and Rice: black beans are poured over the rice. I would've preferred them separate, as the beans took over the rice, but it didn't take away from the meal. 5. Tres Leches: by far the BEST TRES LECHES CAKE we have found in Philly! My boyfriend and I love Tres Leches cake, and have tried to find places that serve this and we've been disappointed over and over again. We were NOT disappointed today--it was creamy and delicious and it came with the perfect amount of fruit (strawberries and mango) to add some tart to the sweet cake. They must also make their own whip cream because it was thick and delicious partner in this dessert! I'm definitely ordering a whole cake for my boyfriend's birthday in a few months (they said they could as long as they have a week's notice!). It also came with chips and salsa in the beginning. I would've preferred the salsa to be a little spicier, but it still had lots of flavor! If you're in this area, I highly recommend trying this place. It has to be one of the best places I've eaten in this area. I would even consider coming here over El Vez!

Pretty good. Breakfast was good and not a huge menu but a good menu. Happy hour was good with $6 cocktails.

Hello super chill Grateful Dead mexican spot. Is someone readying my dreams. I'm loving La Calaca Feliz. Super chill vibe with good, I mean really good food and food combinations. The nachos are a homerun. If you've got people at your table then these should be ordered. Actually I haven't had a bad thing here. Oh and pro tip - get the Elotes Loco (corn on the cob with lime mayo, queso fresco, chile pequin). No worries that tip is on me. Second pro tip (I'm feeling frisky today) - get the Cafe Feliz it's the after dinner coffee drink ;)

As my friend and I dug into our respective tacos and sides last night, we agreed on one important fact: We were glad we weren't on a date. Messy, messy. I've been wanting to check out La Calaca Feliz since before my move to Fairmount, and many a Yelper had insisted that it was a must-try. I was not led astray. This place is GOOD. For my first visit, I chose the chicken tacos with a side of chochoyotes. When I cleared my plate, I was probably a little too pleased with myself. But, that's extremely rare for me! I *always* walk out with a box. That right there is a testament to the greatness of the food. Oh, and I had a margarita and it was awesome, because of course.

Seriously good food!!! If you are looking for authentic mexican food this is the place!!! I was really impressed by the flavors, quality and appearance of the food I ordered. Let's start with the guacamole. WOW, it was amazing!! It was so simple but yet so delicious. The guacamole is served with fresh chips that also come with a side of salsa. I ordered the carinitas tacos and the elote loco which is the grilled corn on the cob. I was blown away!!!! Quality over quantity is a nice way to describe La Calaca Feliz!! The enjoyed the great service as all servers and bartenders were very attentive and very pleasant. I also had one of the best margaritas here. It was the perfect blend of tequila and sour mix. I think that for the quality and service you get that the pricing if fair. I will return and totally recommend this restaurant!!! *credit cards accepted *check hours because they close for an hour or so after brunch to prepare for dinner. *easy to find street parking

This place was just okay for me. Nothing too spectacular in terms of food. I came here on a whim for dinner since my boyfriend and I were in the area. The decor and environment of the place is very nice, and the murals painted on the walls add a very nice touch to the Spanish-esque atmosphere. We ended up ordering a pretty small dinner since we weren't too hungry. The menu has a good amount to choose from. I'm a huge fan of guacamole, and this place offers very unique choices. My boyfriend and I decided to be "adventurous" and ordered the crab guacamole which had pomegranate seeds in them. Along with the guac, we also ordered an order of their carnitas tacos. The guacamole came out promptly, and it was a whole lot less than what I expected to get for the price we paid for it ($17). While the price was pretty high, the guacamole did not disappoint. I never thought crab and pomegranate would go together but the two definitely are a great compliment to one another. The pomegranate adds a great sweet crunch to the rich and creamy crab and guac texture. Their house salsa was also very enjoyable. The carnitas taco, while good, was nothing outstanding or worth raving about. La Calaca Feliz is a nice place for a dinner date, but I don't think I'd come back here for Mexican food unless I was in the area. There are other places where I would go for better tasting Mexican food for the price I paid at La Calaca Feliz.

Dearest and I grabbed some drinks at the bar after we put our name in, knowing it would be a 45 minute wait. The three chili margarita put me in the mood. Getting seated after a 30 minute wait really charmed my pants off. Sitting in the loud-ass small dining room put my pants back on and made the buzz go away. But the food was delicious. The crab fundido was cheesy crab delicious. The jicama salad was crunchy, a bit heavy on the dressing and light on the grapefruit, but overall refreshing. Our enchiladas (seafood and vegetarian) were tasty, although nothing super magical. But what topped off our dinner date was the domingo sundae: churros ice cream (basically a very light cinnamon vanilla taste) with caramel popcorn and brownie bites and peanuts-- the salty sweet combo was delicious. So overall the food here was satisfying. I wouldn't necessarily bring a date here. It's so loud because it's such a small place and a hundo people were having birthday parties on a Saturday because it's a fun place to do it since you essentially take up the entire restaurant. If you've got nothing to say to your date, then you can take them here and use the loud ambiance as an excuse for the lull in conversation.

There are some restaurants that put you immediately at ease -- you know right away it's going to be a good night when you walk in the door. La Calaca Feliz is one of those restaurants. Whoever designed the place really knows how to set the mood. The ambiance is slightly dark and exotic, but not stiflingly so. The dimly lit and narrow bar just inside the door leads to the spacious and welcoming main dining area in the back. The high-ceiling room has large windows and is more brightly lit, and looks like a cross between a diner and a bistro, with big red squishy booths on the right and comfortable, well-spaced wooden tables on the left. Everything in the restaurant looked impeccably spick and span, with a simple, understated elegance. There were candles on the tables. You feel comfortable when you're seated, like you have have room to move, breathe, and talk. Definitely a good date restaurant. We started with guac and chips. The guacamole came in a huge stone mortar and pestle and dressed up with some zingy seasoning. One of the best guacamoles I've had recently, although I may be biased because of the mortar. For our main course we had the duck confit with smashed potatoes (a special). It was well-cooked and the meat easily fell off the bones. It was a bit light flavor-wise, but not un-satisfyingly so. There was something sweet in it to balance out the meat (cranberries, I think). It was nice. My friend had the plantain-crusted tilapia tacos. I finished it off with a tortilla soup, which had nice chunks of chicken and two slices of fresh avocado. My friends told me the margaritas were also very good, though I didn't try it. Will definitely be returning here!

Wonderful service, even on a crazy busy Saturday night. The host was amazingly accommodating, couldn't do enough to find us a table. Great friendly crowd, all having a good time. Their food is fresh, interesting and super tasty - we particularly enjoyed the fish tacos and their enchiladas were better than I've had anywhere. We'll definitely go back to try their margaritas.

Having moved to the Fairmount area, one of the places I was excited to finally try was La Calaca Feliz. Chef-owner Tim Spinner's debut restaurant was well-deserved after years of cooking alongside Iron Chef Jose Garces at El Vez (coincidentally one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in Center City). It received three bells from Craig La Ban to boot! And so on a bright sunny day, the GF and I stopped by for some proper Mexican fare. The space was larger than initially expected, with a great outdoor space in the back - perfect for lively parties. If it's nice enough, do get a space outside for a somewhat al fresco experience. Chiquita Margarita [$12] Skinny margarita, espolon blanco, fresh lime juice, cointreau As expected, go with the margaritas here - even the GF's skinny version was good. Not overly sweet or tart, the mellow flavors were accentuated by the cointreau. Stagger Lee [$9] Bourbon, honey, pineapple, jalapeno I was on a bourbon kick, so went with the Stagger Lee - as weak as the rapper unfortunately - almost to the point of tasting like water. The jalapeno added some spicy freshness, but I felt like the tipple could have used some lime. Stick with the margs! Guacamole Traditional [$9.95] Avocado, tomato, jalapeno, onion The traditional guac was fresh and had nice hints of jalapeno and lime. Nothing as spectacular as El Vez, but certainly a decent iteration. It was served with house-made chips and a pat of salsa, which was unfortunately a bit bland and tempered. Pulpo a la Parilla [$9.95] Octopus, achiote, crispy chocoyotes On the other hand, the octopus was great. The char from the grill was evident and lent itself nicely to the pulpo. The well-seasoned crust surrounded the tender pulpo. The crispy gnocchi offered similar textural contrasts and the radish and cilantro helped to provide some freshness to each bite. Asparagus Tlayuda [$10.95] with Fried Egg [+ $1] Asparagus, truffle, poblano, jalapeno, requeson, queso mixto, manchego bechamel The Mexican 'pizzette' provided some traditional flavors of truffle, asparagus, topped with a fried egg. The bechamel helped to add some creaminess to each bite of the crispy tortilla. Chorizo Tacos [$10.95] Mexican sausage, baby potato, onion, cilantro, salsa verde At this point, the manager, Zach, stopped by with some complimentary chorizo tacos. When showcased as the primary protein, I typically find chorizo to be overly greasy. But these were delicious, with the baby potatoes soaking up the grease and spice. The condiments helped to provide some acidity and herbaceousness. Carnitas Tacos [$10.95] Pulled pork, salsa roja, onions, cilantro, avocado The GF went with the carnitas, which were moist and pure pork flavor. The fresh avocado wedges added some rich creaminess and the corn tortillas were fresh. Do get these! Pork Belly Tacos [$11.95] Soy chili glaze, avocado, pickled onions, cucumber And of course, I had to get the pork belly tacos. The vinegar-based slaw provided the perfect counterbalance for the creamy avocado and sweet, soy-based sauce glaze on the crisp bits of pork belly. After a somewhat slow start with my drink and salsa, I'm glad the meal picked up. La Calaca Feliz is on point with its tacos and from the execution of its pulpo, I'm excited to try some of the other menu items in the future. It's clear there's a reason Tim Spinner's spot is popular with the Fairmount crowd.

Good reviews made me come here. However, I was very disappointed: - Service was horrible, the rudest waiter who did not explain the menu, charged some random things, throw check (that had some food on it) when we were still eating, did not ask if we want anything else; - Food was ok, very salty. Portions were small like in some elegant restaurant like Tequilas, but come on, this place is far from being there; - Over priced... For seating in a broken table, eating from old scratched plates, we did not even get cloth napkins, some cheap paper napkins from 7 eleven. I end up paying 18 dollars for 3 tiny tacos, seating on the unbearably uncomfortable wooden table that scratched my legs, drinking hot water, and taking attitude from rude waiter. Thank you, will not come back.

Menu was small, but food was excellent!!! I got the swordfish tacos. A bit pricey for what you actually get, I'm new to the area so there may be other Mexican restaurants around that are just as good for a better bang for your buck.

The SO and I love this place. It's one of our go-to places when we can't think of any other place to go. Our favorites are the nachos with brisket, carnitas tacos, fish tacos, and the tortilla soup but you can't go wrong with any of the other options on the menu. It has a great atmosphere and the service is fairly quick.

Me and my girlfriend were visiting Philly, and this restaurant was highly recommended by our mutual friend who lives in Philly. It was five of us on Friday evening and didn't have reservations. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were told it's going to be approximately 30-45 mins, so we decided to wait around. Entry area of the restaurant is very congested with a bar on side and really no room to stand. There is a small room where employees kept going in and out of and we constantly had to move out of the way. It took almost an hour before we were seated. Upon seating we ordered a round of margaritas and it was an extended wait. I think they were very busy being Friday evening but i believe a restaurant should be staffed accordingly. Our server was super nice and very friendly. Margaritas were worth the wait. I tried the Feliz margarita and the moonshine margarita and they were both excellent. Food was really good as well with authentic Mexican flavors. Will give them another try with reservations next time, because of the margaritas and good food. Restaurant design/setup:3* They can use some remodeling. Ambiance:4* Decor:4* Service:4* Drinks:5* Food:5* although dessert wasn't the best, but 5* for authentic good Mexican food. Overall 3.5 Stars but unfortunately can't do that. I thought 3 stars would be bit harsh, so giving the management benefit of the doubt with 4 stars. Maybe they had someone call in sick, but owner should definitely consider remodeling the place.

Reading the other reviews of this place and seeing all the pictures with excited captions, I really thought that this was finally going to be THE place to go with my girlfriend. She is from southern California and has lived in Spain for a little while before, so she has had her fair share or Mexican/Spanish food. I made a reservation all quick-like hoping that this would be the closest thing we would get to authentic Mexican/Spanish cuisine.... ....man, were we underwhelmed.... When you initially walk in you ask yourself where they could fit a restaurant. The first thought you get when walking into this place is that there is a bar with a knook and a few tables...thats it (except for the sound of chaos in the background). The chaos, you realize when being led to your table in the oddly large back room, is from the kitchen, cooking like crazy. Why can you hear the kitchen and the sense the chaos so well? Because you have to walk through the area where the waiters pick up their orders to get to your table! Seems like a pretty weird way to orient a restaurant, but its a small building...I give them a pass for that. Once you get to the table and order your $8 ice-water with tequila, you realize the theme in the place. The decor has a good Mexican-ish flair thats not in your face nor very memorable. The one thing that sticks is the consistent theme of skeletons, which, after consulting my girlfriend, makes sense since the place is named "The Happy Skeleton". Cute. What we did find intriguing is the nice looking outdoor seating with the requisite hanging line of incandescent lightbulbs you see nowadays. Its a nice touch and a cool looking area, if not really all that Mexican. Once the food you ordered (which you happened to do while drinking your iced water-tequila) comes by, the first thing you feel, especially with the enchiladas, is.....thats it? My girlfriend eats relatively small meals, so she was happy with what she got. Me, on the other hand, had to ask myself "did I order an appetizer?". Nope! Thats the main course buddy! It took me all of 10 min (with talking of course) to finish the food. Yea, it was somewhat tasty, but not what I was expecting. The mole sauce I got on my enchiladas was bland, if mild. I had better mole at a bar 2 blocks from my apartment...for half the price. After finishing the food I still felt hungry. Not good when you come in starving and expect a tasty feast. I wanted moar. Since we were both underwhelmed by our entrees (by taste and size), we were lazy and decided to stick around for dessert. MY GOD, was that a good idea! I forget what it was called, but it had mini brownies, (I think) cinnamon ice cream, caramel popcorn, and whipped cream. Push the puffy stuff out of the way and you have a scrumptious concoction that almost makes up for the bland meal and drinks. I was finally somewhat satisfied. CHECK PLEASE! Overall, it was an underwhelming experience. Not really that authentic of Mexican/Spanish food, but passable for those pastily inclined like me. Take away the high prices and fix the portions and you got yourself a winner. Otherwise your only take aways are a watered down mojito/sangria and the memories of dancing skeletons.

Definitely numero uno on my list of favorite Mexican restaurants in Philly. SO FREAKIN' GOOD. We started off with some margaritas (really strong...) and my favorite pre-appetizer, chips and guac. They have a few varieties of guac, but we went for the traditional (just avocado, tomato, onion and jalepeno). I can't actually remember what my friend and BF got (whatever it was, they ate all of it), but I had the enchilada con mariscos, which was delicious! Crab, shrimp, chipotle cream and salsa ranchera - so good. If you like crab, I would highly recommend it. We also got the sweet plantains and elotes loco - the latter being one of my favorite things to eat in the whole wide word. It's basically corn with mayo and queso fresco - I'm pretty sure they season it with a little lime and chili pepper as well. They normally offer it on the cob, but I requested it off the cob and they kindly obliged!

Fantastic restaurant. They didn't have our reservation table ready but the drinks were fantastic and the servers were incredibly nice with a great attitude. Guacamole is pretty great as are the fish tacos, bass, and everything else we got. The one thing I'd like to highlight is how professional and excellent the manager is. She makes a great (something) mule drink and really took care of us. God bless.

My first experience here was good. Did the chef's special. Drinks were not the best. Mojitos were horrible here. The only bad thing about the chef's special was there were not many variation of dishes. We gaucamole was was ok. Cheviche was great. Than came out a vegetarian tomato salad? I think that was it. That was really good. After this we got 3 different types of tacos (fish, chicken, and pork). I thought really... What about some enchiladas or tamales? Grilled shrimp and grits came out and that was good. The tres leche was amazing. The sorbet was ok. Elotes was ok. For some reason, ours were shaved and other tables got a whole corn. I thought that was weird. Second visit, appetizers were good, drinks were good. I had the red sangria and it was good. Just apples in it. Lol. The appetizer was a crab cheese dip and that was really good. Our main entree was a steak and bean dish, a fish and rice dish and a chicken enchilada. For the chicken enchilada we were given choices of sauce. We got the tomato base sauce and it was good. It took about 42 mins for our entree to come out. A long wait. After the entrees I had to order dessert. Tres Leche... I was so excited for this. As it came out this time, it was prettier then the first visit. But very dry. It was horrible. Did not compare to my first visit. Overall, this place is inconsistent with its food. I had hope it was not. Everything is just ok. A hit or a miss.

AMAZING chicken enchiladas. They have the perfect red sauce and balance of chicken and cheese. The rice and beans didn't necessarily taste like traditional Mexican rice and beans but they were still good. Really tasty house margarita for only 7.75. The guacamole tasted good with a heavy like taste but not a huge portion. I tried my friend's fish tacos, and they were extremely tasty. I definitely want to return.

  • Mandy L.

Although the atmosphere and service were good, I cannot say the same for the food and drinks. The sangria and margaritas are barely drinkable. They are so sweet and not fresh at all. Also the food was just sub par. I got the corn soup which was very bland. I also got the ceviche which was actually tasty and fresh. My boyfriend was supposed to get a chicken enchilada with green chili sauce. Instead he got a beef one with mole sauce. The server was very nice and apologized before bringing out the correct dish. To our disappointment this dish was also lacking in flavor. Overall, if an authentic Mexican experience is what you're looking for, unfortunately, this is not the place for you. Mediocre at best, there are plenty of other Mexican places to go in the city that are way better and cheaper.

I've had wonderful nachos at several La Calaca Feliz happy hours, and excellent tacos, tlayudas, guacamole, and to-die-for tortilla soup during many dinner visits. The common thread is always a delicious margarita, or perhaps two.

I went to La Calaca Feliz for a friend's birthday party last weekend and my overall impression is that there is not much difference between Calaca and its sister restaurant, Taqueria (location excepted, of course). This isn't a bad thing. When you first walk in, there are a few seats at the front before the restaurant narrows for the kitchen. Squeezing through that area yields an airier room in the back with colorful murals and dim lighting (plus plenty of seating for all). Tasty food and great presentation are also a hallmark of this establishment. I went with enchiladas and chose the salsa verde, which had a nice, peppery bite to it. My friend also had enchiladas and the other had soup and a second dish I'm blanking on. I was totally stuffed by the time the check came and couldn't even think about dessert when the waitress asked. Paying $4.75 for a Corona Extra was steep and hard to stomach, but I will chalk it up to city prices and stick with the specialty margaritas/mixed drinks next time so I get more bang for my buck.

Found this business on Yelp when walking the Schuylkill Banks with some family. Wanted outdoor seating and somewhere with reasonable food and good drinks. La Calaca Feliz definitely delivered. We started at the bar because dinner service didn't begin until 4. We went with a pitcher of red sangria (that probably had more ice in it than it needed to) and paired that with the House Nachos. Definitely add the meat for $3. When we moved to the table at 4pm, we sat on the outback patio. It was beautiful and the rest of our food was great.

My husband and I were trying to find a new spot to try to Fairmount and I'm glad we decided on La Calaca! We had the chicken enchiladas and fish tacos and the fish tacos were probably the best I've had...don't forget the chipotle aioli. The drinks were good too...perfect passion fruit margarita!

I finally had the opportunity to try one of La Calaca Feliz's daily specials and it absolutely warrants a review update. With the date being National Margarita Day, dinner at La Calaca Feliz was a no brainer. My husband and I had a 6:15 reservation but were seated upon our 6pm arrival. We were seated at a cozy table/booth against the window but totally alleviated my past concerns of cramped quarters. It was nestled in the back and we had a much more private experience. Leah was once again our server and I cannot say enough good things about her. She's friendly, personable, attentive and down to earth. She had a great understanding of the regular menu and specials and was able to offer her advice when needed. Her description of the special of the day had me sold. It was a local red snapper with guajillo and cauliflower purée with a citrus vinaigrette. The snapper was so light and fresh. The cauliflower puree was creamy and flavorful. The citrus vinaigrette added a nice contrast of sweet to the dish. My only beef was that I wish the dish was larger. Of course it paired perfectly with their Feliz Margarita. My husband went with the grilled chicken mole again and really enjoyed his dish as well. Since it was a brisk winter's night, we deemed it was warm enough and necessary to try the churros ice cream. It was the perfect cinnamon close out to the meal. I can't say enough good things about La Calaca Feliz and look forward to my next visit.

Got the three tacos with al pastor and guava boing. Overall, delicious. Interestingly, the salsas they give you are a chili verde.. and, like, a spicy aioli. Maybe that's really traditional and I just have no idea, but I definitely wasn't expecting it.

My boyfriend moved to Philly for 2 years, and every time I visit him, we usually never visit the same restaurant twice as we want to try as many different places as possible. However, La Calaca Feliz was so enjoyable that we ended up coming twice. I highly recommend making a reservation prior to your visit. During both our visits, the restaurant was very busy. I really enjoyed my margarita(s). A lot. I usually have a tendency to just stick with water when I go out to eat, but I am so glad that I decided to be adventurous and have a drink. Their margaritas are perfection! We also ordered the nachos with short ribs and oh my god, it was a transcendent experience. The nachos I had at La Calaca are the best I ever had and they give you a lot. It's probably enough for 3, but my boyfriend I had no problem eating the entire thing. The short ribs do cost $3 extra, but seriously get it anyways. I had the nacho both ways - with and without the short rib - and it tastes wayyyy better with the short ribs. The fish tacos are just okay. The tasted good, but weren't anything special. Their margaritas and nachos are what made my dining experience at La Calaca Feliz worthwhile.

I hadn't eaten all day so I was famished when I walked through the doors of La Calaca Feliz . The restaurant was warm and inviting and had some interesting architecture in the back dining room. With a 730 arrival and no wait, I sat down with my small party of 3 and noticed that many of the tables were filled with guests. In no time, we had all ordered our meals. The starter, a simple guacamole with chips was somewhat of a dissapointment. I was judging that by the price and the size of the bowls that I saw on other tables that the amount of guacamole would be formidable. I was mistaken. I know guac is extra, but come on. Shortly after my main course arrived. Two large fish tacos with a side of 2 sauces. The plating and decor of the dish was supurb, apatizing and colorful. The sauce was provided in just enough of an amount to lightly dress both tacos. With my first bite, I was pleasantly surprised. The fish was cooked to perfection Light and fluffy with an exquisite crunch of the breading. Not one flavor over powered another. It really was good. The service was merely ok, though. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I'm going to pay this much money... I simply want a little better service or a little more guac. Nice place to check out. A little pricey. Cheers

A mouse running around made for an interesting evening. Additionally the service was not good. We had to remind the waiter several times about which drinks we ordered after which we waited a while to get them. Also, while sitting at the bar waiting to get seated we noticed the long beard of the bartender. Seemed like he's been growing it out for quite some time. We were under the impression there are regulations governing facial hair in food service establishments. Not sure what's happening at this restaurant. The waiter seemed sleepy at times and barely stopped over to make sure everything was OK. Most likely will not be returning to this place any time soon.

I wish I could give them 6 stars. Ive been here so many times and have never been disappointed. I love the twist that they put on guacomole -there are so many options to choose from. Also, the tacos are equally amazing! And the service has always been great as well. If you're in fairmount, then I recommend making a quick stop here even if its just for guac and a margarita.

Food was ok if you were looking for a fusion of different American and American Mexican bar food. We got mushroom tacos, squash enchiladas, some big nacho platter and the guacamole. They were all ok tasting and it was something different so it was worth the try. The guacamole was definitely not the best in Philadelphia. Best part was their Arnold Palmer Iced tea. Probably won't go back again but it was worth going once. They wouldn't give us extra onions in a dish. THIS PLACE DOES NOT HAVE AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD.

Came here for dinner with the family on the way home from Maryland. Yelp reviews and a 3-bell review from Craig LaBan made me want to try this restaurant. We were all very pleased with our meal. We got here about 8pm and were seated about 20 minutes later. The room is amazing and I wished that we got to sit in their outdoor section as I'm sure it was less noisy than what we had to deal with. We ordered the nachos with the $3 upgrade short ribs and they were some of the best towers of nachos we've ever had! The short rib just made everything that much better. If anything, you have to get these nachos. We added the basic guacamole which was also awesome and we probably could have gone through 2 more orders with the nachos. For entrees, the kids had a chicken and cheese quesadilla. This was a very basic with no special frills shell with cheese and chicken. They liked it, but it really was nothing special. Wife had fish tacos. Although tasty, she felt it was almost too breaded. My tacos El Pastor with pork, avocado, and pineapple was refreshing. I thought I would like the pineapple flavor better than I really did. The meat was perfect and very filling. I also had fried plantains which I thought were just like candy, but no one else in the family liked them. Wife got grilled zucchini which was perfect and everyone liked those. I had 3 total margaritas...2 Garcias and 1 Chili. I liked the Garcia ones much better but all were good. Wife had a Mexican Coke. Service was attentive and multiple people assisted us at our table. We also had some nice conversation with the people next to us. Was rather noisy in the room as sound reverberated throughout. We have a place that we absolutely want to come back to! $105 without tip for 2 adults, 2 kids.

Great Mexican spot. Been here twice and loved it both times. Great selection of margaritas, had the moonshine margarita ( with whiskey ) to stay masculine lol very good. Both times had the carnitas tacos. They are delicious. Place so good I pigged out and also the fish tacos. Great batter fish tacos!!! Also start out with guac, GUAC IS LIFE!! Only con was that it was a bit pricey in my opinion. Good was great but small portion tacos.

Great location & atmosphere. Free street parking in Philly! Guacamole was good but for $10 wasn't anything special. Brussel sprout pizza called Tlayuda something or other was great. Entree Trio of Enchiladas was excellent w/3 distinctly different tastes on one plate. Others in my party had mahi tacos, chicken tacos & chorizo tacos. Fresh ingredients & nicely presented. The choc cake dessert had a strange sour sauce it was set in. Sent it back to get just the cake & ice cream. The brownie-Carmel popcorn dessert was a good flavor combo. Will come back

I went to La Calaca expecting a decent Mexican meal. But oh, I got so much more. I couldn't even explain to my BF how good my Pork Belly tacos were, so I just made him try them. His fish tacos were so much better than expected. Will definitely return to try more menu items, but damn, those pork belly tacos...

Great resturant within walking distance to my house (along with the museums and whatnot). We've been here twice in the past 2 weeks, and both times the food and service was done right. They have happy hour until 7 and so the beers are $4, house wine $4 (and pretty good, too) and a few bucks off margaritias. The firs time I went, I had a Tlayuda. It's like a tostada, but larger and made with this great cornmeal crust. Defintitely would get it again. The 2nd time we went, my wife and I both had tacos. all in all, the food is good and the service even better.

We came here with friends for our first dinner in Philly. Our friends raved about it and we're always up for Mexican, so we thought it was a slam dunk. It wasn't, but it wasn't an air ball either - somewhere in between. I really like the space. We wanted to sit outside on their lovely patio, but there wasn't space for a party our size. Instead, we say in a large booth in the back corner. All of our dinner companions frequent the place and were quite friendly with the staff. Everyone was so nice, that it's truly disappointing that I can't like it more than I do. To start, I went with the three chile margarita; I actually had two and they were my favorite thing about my meal. Sweet, spicy and delicious. Manfriend and I ordered the hamachi ceviche to split as our starter. It was good, but for the price, I thought the portion was scant. For our main, our entire table ordered the fish tacos. They were so hyped, it seemed silly to go with anything else. The tacos were fine, not my favorites by a stretch. The amount of fish in each taco was generous, but the flavors fell flat. I was gobsmacked that they charge $14 for two tacos; just two tacos, not rice, beans or anything else. To accompany our dinner, we ordered rice and beans, sweet plantains, and chochoyotes. Of the three, the sweet plantains are the only item I'd order again. The rice and beans were average; not bad and not remarkable. I was intrigued by the chochoyotes or Mexican gnocchi; the dish is ok, but missing something that would make the flavors really pop. It felt kind of like an odd menu pairing, like I'd just ordered a side of Italian food to go with my tacos. Maybe if the flavors had more of a latino flair, I'd feel differently. The plantains were the star; so delicious, these I would order again without hesitation. Bottom line, I left feeling like I dropped an above average amount of money on a very average meal.

A friend recommended this place as having great guacamole, my favorite food, so I had to check it out! Started out with the white wine sangria, truly amazing!!! The guac was creamy and buttery, perfect. Perfect. Perfect. We had the chicken, mushroom and cauliflower tacos. The chicken was less than satisfactory, the chicken being kind of chewy, my sister says the mushroom was delightful, and I loved the flavor of the cauliflower. The soups were amazing and a great price-we had the tortilla and pumpkin soups. Yum.

We started with the guac which was solid - good avocados make it hard to screw up, in my opinion. I started with the tortilla soup which had really great flavor (but was noticeably spicy to a wimp like me. Just something to be aware of). Magnificent mushroom tacos. They were perfect. My friend had the carnival tacos which were also phenomenal. Our server was exactly attentive enough, we weren't rushed, and got to enjoy the lovely outdoor seating! Lovely dinner spot for catching up with a friend.

I ordered the fish tacos with refried beans and rice. The fish tacos were good with the two salsas included, not the best ones Ive had but they were good. The refried beans were really regular black beans, but every restaurant cooks in their special way. The service was excellent and the place has a good ambience to it. Only concern was that my beer was not served in a glass compared to the other tables, but this is just a minor observation.

Pretty good (though a portion of that goodness comes from the cute waiter--rivaling Doma's!) Mexican offering in Fairmount! The guacamole (regular) is delicious (though, as with many serve-in-a-mortar spots, it looks like they give you more than they actually do), though the chips were slightly stale. The tacos al pastor were good: succulent meat, though I would've liked a second lime wedge, more pineapple chunks, and maybe some pickled jalapeno to kick up the flavor. The virgin margarita with a pineapple shot was very strong--I preferred it slightly watered down. La Calaca Feliz's backyard courtyard is very appealing. Overall, La Calaca Feliz's ambiance is more "Center City" than nearby Isabel, which has a fancied-up cafeteria feel, however, in terms of flavor, Isabel wins.

The outside patio at outside of la calaca Feliz is a GREAT hidden spot during the spring/summer and I will definitely go bad! We got to this place on a Sunday ~4Pm and we had to wait to be sited because they were still waiting on the patio space to be ready. After 5 min, our party of four got sited and we ordered margaritas. I felt the drink was on the spot and had the right amount of liquor. We were not extremely hungry so we decided to share and ordered Crab fondido and nachos with spared ribs. Both plates were just great and PLENTY of food to be shared. The prices are reasonable and the service is nice. Definitely another place to had to my go-to list.

La Calaca Feliz serves contemporary Mexican cuisine that is traditional and bold in the heart of Philadelphia. The space is beautiful modern classy decor with contrasting colors on the wall and abstract artwork; dark woods, nice lighting, and quiet, intimate backyard seatings. THE FOOD: Baja Fish Tacos ($14)- This is the holy fish-taco trinity, and as the dish continues to make its way outside of Mexico and into cities all over the country, La Calaca Feliz does not depart from the core original formula. Served with plantain crusted blue tilapia, cabbage, avocado, lemon vinaigrette, I almost fell off my chair after first bite. A sensational blend of flavors with a perfectly fried fish, I was in heaven. THE SERVICE/PRICE: We were greeted immediately by our lovely server, Jen. She was all smiles and approached us with a, "Can I make your dinner as pleasant as possible" type of attitude. We requested outside seatings in the back if possible and they were more than happy to appease our preference. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food prepared. Everything from the food, ambiance, to service here is great. It's definitely a MUST TRY for any fan of Mexican food hands down! Oh, don't forget to try the margaritas!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
