I wouldn't say I hate Church's Chicken, but I guess I don't like them very much either. For one, they're housed in an amazing old building on the corner of Broad and Erie Ave ( flickr.com/photos/ellenm… and scripophily.com/webcart/… ), and you'd never know it because now it likes like a, well, like a fast food restaurant. Cheapens the history of the neighborhood if you ask me. I realize this probably isn't Church's fault, but I gotta blame someone, and I choose them. On top of that, to me, Church's always seems to be the copycat of the big fried chicken chains. Seemed like they brought out the spicy chicken to compete with Popeye's and now the Southern-style chicken sandwich to compete with Chick fil A. Even the original, Southern-style fried chicken is similar to KFC. Don't get me wrong. I love fried chicken, and Church's is pretty tasty. I'll go when I get a fried chicken craving. They even have fried okra and jalapenos, which is pretty cool, and their honey-butter biscuits are awesome in a disgusting kind of way. But there's a Crown Fried Chicken across the street--I'd rather go to Crown.
