I've stopped by Bassett's for ice cream twice now--once on my first visit to RTM, and once on my third. Had I reviewed Bassett's after my first visit, I would have awarded 5 stars. However, I held off on reviewing them until I'd tried one of their signature flavors, which I did on my second visit (third visit to RTM). While the ice cream itself is excellent, there were a few snafus that I can't overlook, and it's pricey at $4.50 for a double scoop, the smallest size. On my first visit last Nov., I was hoping to try the gadzooks flavor, but they didn't have it, so I settled for a sugar cone of the peanut butter swirl. This may just be my bias, but I was surprised when the base ice cream was vanilla, rather than chocolate. Despite my initial disappointment, the ice cream ended up being absolutely delicious. It had a very smooth and creamy mouthfeel and wide ribbons of peanut butter creating the sweet-savory and textural harmony that characterizes well-made peanut butter ice cream. I was quite happy when eating this ice cream, as well as immediately afterward, which no doubt affected my response to a mood survey that I completed for a Penn student for research purposes. On my second visit two weeks ago, I decided to try the WHYY experience, one of their specialty flavors, since they again didn't have the gadzooks flavor. This flavor consists of vanilla ice cream with butterscotch swirls and chocolate covered pretzels, and was definitely one of the more unique ice cream flavors I've tried. However, the texture of the ice cream was too soft as of my visit. In fact, a scoop of it fell back into the carton when being scooped. The scooper asked if I wanted the ice cream and cone in a bowl, and I assented, fearing that it might fall off when I was trying to eat it, otherwise. I certainly think I made a wise decision, given how gooey the texture turned out to be when eating it! While I definitely recommend Bassett's for ice cream, they need to work on their consistency--both figuratively and literally. Perhaps they only have certain flavors on certain days, but I was disappointed that gadzooks wasn't available during either of my visits. The gooey texture of the ice cream on my second visit was an even bigger issue--they need to ensure that their ice cream is kept at the proper temperature, and that employees aren't serving ice cream that's too soft. Despite these shortcomings, I'll definitely be back for another visit--hopefully, the third time will be the charm for encountering the elusive gadzooks flavor! 4.5 stars.

After walking around downtown Philadelphia to the liberty bell, we went to the Reading Terminal and got some ice cream from Bassets. It's the best thing you can have on a hot, humid, summer day. They don't joke around with the scoops here. They give you huge scoops. Seriously, like huge ass patriotic American GO USA super-sized scoops. The Bassets should open a ice cream scooping course in the San Francisco area because I feel like I get ripped off now every time I buy ice cream in the Bay Area. The ice cream is creamy, dense, and packed with flavor. I had banana and green tea. They were delicious. My other friends had toffee crunch and it was amazing as well. This is a great ice cream place...I've decided that I would come to every time I visit Philly. Also, I don't recommend their sugar cones. It was stale and flavorless.

The only ice cream shop I saw in the terminal was this shop, so I decided to give them a try! The ice cream shop is very much traditional in the sense that they serve hand dipped ice cream on a cone or in a cup. However, this ice cream shop has a twist. The shop forces traditional to meet modern. The traditional setup of the store has a twist when it comes to the ice cream flavors. They serve flavors like green tea and cinnamon. Don't let me get started on the green tea flavor. It is just so delicious and creamy in texture. The green tea flavor is my ultimate favorite. I typically love green tea ice cream, but from Bassett the green tea ice cream is to die for. The one thing I would like to see is friendly service. I know the lines are packed and they need to serve many people, but have they ever heard of smiling?

The best ice cream ever! Very rich and creamy. I ordered a scoop on a cone of macadamia nut ice cream and it was the best! They serve you a really large scoop and their cones are fresh. I hate cones that are stale and soggy. We also ordered a French vanilla shake. Nice and thick, not too milky, perfect shake. Next time, I'm going to try their Oreo shake. The lady who made them looks like a real pro. Bassetts Ice cream is located at one of the entrances inside of Reading Terminal. You can't miss it. If you're looking for a sweet spot after roaming around Reading Terminal for small bites, end your day at Bassetts and you won't regret it!

Such yummy ice cream! They have a lot of unique flavors that you can choose from. I got the cookies and cream ice cream and green tea ice cream. Both of them were delicious. The ice cream is rich and creamy and very thick. The flavor of the ice cream is rich, but the ice cream is perfectly sweet. It is not too sweet that you get sick of it. I really like how the ice cream store is inside of Reading Terminal because the market is bustling with people and you can really feel the energy around that, which makes the ice cream even better! It's a great experience and you have to stop by this place after eating everything thing else in Reading Terminal!

Ice cream sounds really good right now...but then again when doesn't it sound good... Try getting in line and get a pint of ice cream instead of a cone .... a pint of ice cream was ten bucks... and a cone was four... so you you do the math..i got pint and share it with five people... they serve cream and filter water on the side...might be one of the best food stands in the market... They also have over twenty five ice cream flavors to choose from... i got the french vanilla...didn't feel to adventures that day to try new flavors...the wait is pretty long but well worth it...the flavors and texture is pretty good! enjoyyyyyy

Best part of Reading Terminal Market! Apparently this is one of America's oldest ice creameries and there's a reason why they've stuck around for so long. The ice cream here is super creamy, very rich, and the flavors are incredible. I got the green tea ice cream and mocha chip and both were fantastic. Really don't think you can go wrong with either. My only tip is to get your own and don't make the mistake of sharing...it is that yummy. They aren't terribly friendly though which is too bad, but I guess they have to keep the line moving and the scoopers scooping.

Oldest ice cream in America! Yup I wanted to eat a piece of history while visiting this historic town so had to grab a couple scoops while I'm here. I ordered the mint chocolate chip and coffee chip. You can only select a 2-scoop, which is the smallest. The ice cream was not sweet and lacked a little flavor, but it did curb my dessert craving after having a philly cheesesteak from across the way. The first time I passed through the line was super long. The second time I stopped by, the line was shorter and it was near close of business. Friendly staff and you are able to request samples. Just don't take a long time, please, esp if there's a long line!!! Try a couple flavors and take a photo. Historic foodie place!

When there is ice cream involved, I am ALWAYS a happy camper. However, I am also quite particular. Having been established in 1861, they are one of the oldest ice cream companies in the nation. (I believe they deliver nationwide too!) I ordered one scoop of the vanilla fudge and one scoop of the Irish coffee, they were quite generous with their portions! The ice cream was super creamy and the 2 flavors worked well together. I could really taste the "Irish" in the Irish coffee if you know what I mean, but it was overall delicious. If you're ever in RTM, definitely give this place a shot. I would like to sample their other flavors such as eggnog, green tea, and the WHYY Experience (their unique flavor creation), there are just so many flavors it's hard to choose!

Billed as the oldest operating ice creamery. My boyfriend and I stopped at Bassetts because they had ice cream. I had no clue the popularity of Bassett's until I checked in. It's a standard old school ice cream shop serving out premium ice cream. My boyfriend and I shared a mint chocolate chip scoop on a sugar cone. Nothing crazy and insane but my boyfriend seemed so happy and content being pushed around by the crowd at Reading Terminal after he got that ice cream in hand. It says something about the ice cream at Basset's. It can make even crazy crowds bearable! Though they don't have a single scoop on the menu (we had to ask for it separately), and the flavors are a little limited to more traditional fare, we really enjoyed the experience. Extra points to Bassett's for having Moose Tracks on the menu. I wish I had gotten it but I was just already so full from all the other things we ate that day. Amazing ice cream, and a fast moving line. I like how you operate thangs, Bassett's!

Bf and I found Bassetts while wandering around Reading Terminal. We spotted many happy customers holding waffle cones and knew we couldn't leave without getting one for ourselves. I had never heard of Bassetts beforehand, but I'm happy we stumbled across it! The line is long but moves quickly. There are a lot of different flavors and we decided on 2 scoops on a waffle cone (came out to $5.75). It wasn't the best ice cream I've ever had, but it was still enjoyable. The ice cream was creamy, and a little sweeter than I would have liked, but they have free jugs of water on the counter for customers to wash it all down with.

Absolutely fantastic old fashion ice cream. While they may not have innovative or edgy or eclectic flavors which are trending these days, they get the simpler combinations of fudge, caramel, nuts, & chocolate chunks oh so right. The texture and consistency of their ice creams reminds me of my childhood when ice cream was solid dense and rich and buttery and where a scoop was substantial. Honestly though, 1 cone is more than enough to share with 2 people. 1 cone to yourself is going full glutton but you deserve this old world simplicity & good quality. All of us ordered a cone w 2 scoops each & loved every creamy bite. We graciously & willingly powered through it like champs. Location: Reading Terminal Market

The ice cream here is delicious and Reading Terminal is such a fun place to go. I get the kiddie cone even though I am an adult since that is more than enough ice cream for me. Expect a long line but that is usual and they are very efficient so it moves quickly.

Bassetts ice cream is AMAZING!!! I love the vibe of Reading Terminal Market, it's s bustling, yet cheery and Bassetts is the cheeriest place of all!! I came at 10 AM so there was no line. But that is a pretty early time for ice cream. But it's really never too early for ice cream, let's be real. The WHYY experience is the best flavor here. It's vanilla ice cream loaded with chocolate covered pretzels and swirled with butterscotch...so good. So creamy, so smooth, so perfect. In a waffle cone with cookies and cream, that's all I need. I will be here every time I'm at Reading Terminal Market!

Can't go to Reading Terminal Market without trying Bassett's Ice Cream! It's one of the oldest ice cream shops in America! I was super full from lunch but I made room for ice cream. They have so many flavors that it's hard to choose. The lady behind the counter recommended the Moose Tracks - but I'm not a huge fan of peanut butter cups. She then suggested the Vanilla Fudge, which was perfect! I love that the fudge is hard in the ice cream - it gives it more of a mouth feel. The ice cream was creamy and smooth - no ice chunks at all. It's a bit on the expensive side but it's pretty worth it.

Ok, it was definitely good, but not sure if all the acclaim is deserved. I had the English Toffee ice cream and yeah it was very good. Super creamy and flavorful. It's on the same level as Ben and Jerry's though. And don't get me wrong, I love Ben and Jerry's, but I can get a lot more bang for my buck with Ben and Jerry's. You also have to deal with the hassle of the line and the crowds of the Reading Terminal Market. That's not particularly fun, unless you like that kind of thing where you have people constantly bumping into you and stuff. Creepers: beware. I mean there's just a ton of other places to go to in the RTM, and while you're not throwing your money away going to Bassett's, it's not going to blow your mind. This isn't the kind of stuff that you're going to want shipped across the country because you just miss it so much. That being said, they have three unique flavors that some swear by that may be simply fantastic. When I try them I will report back.

This is the best ice cream in the world! Super rich and creamy and taste a little buttery as well. I got a Heath Bar come with Pralines and Cream and made love to it. Totally awesome. Yummy!!

The oldest ice cream, I think this place is amazing with their presence itself. But wasn't impressed by their vanilla ice cream. Maybe my palate is get used all commercial ice creams. Their ice cream was good but wasn't super special to go there, waited in line, may not even able to secure seats to enjoy your ice cream... Wasn't pleasant experience. As a Philly tourist was enough to go there once, get my ice cream scoop and take a photo. That once was enough for me.

During my second visit to Philadelphia with the boyfriend, we couldn't help but stop by Reading Terminal Market. We arrived on a the Saturday before Easter Sunday and boy was it packed like sardines. It was a super warm and humid afternoon so we decided to grab ice cream at Bassetts Ice Cream. The line was long but it moved quick. I tried the peach ice cream, but wasn't too thrilled about it. Although it tasted like peach, I thought it was way too sweet. My boyfriend had the Irish Coffee ice cream which was tasty and not as sweet. If we should return to Bassets again, I will definitely give it another shot and try a different flavor too.

A day of walking around the city called for immediate ice cream. Bassett's has been on TV several times and I never got the chance to go (for whatever reason), and finally went yesterday. It's a small counter in the Reading Terminal Market, not very crowded on a cold January day. I really wanted to try the Cookies and Cream flavor, but they were out, so I opted to try Strawberry and Raspberry Truffle. Oh my God, if you try this ice cream you will never buy ice cream from the grocery store again. Creamy and delicate, not too sweet nor too filling... this is REAL ice cream. Brotip: You can also get flavor samples! :D

Hands down, the best vanilla fudge ice cream EVER! I only wish their prepackaged ice cream was more widely available.

  • Ann L.

Bassetts Ice Cream is one of the oldest ice cream place in Philly. President Obama likes the Mint Chocolate Chip here. Ask for samples - I tried 4 flavors, wish I tried more. I got in a Small Cup: Strawberry and one of the Seasonal Flavors, small is $4.50 but it's HUGE and you can get 2-3 flavors. I would go back if I lived nearby.

Not only was the ice-cream delicious, but Chris was extremely patient with our indecision and helped guide us to the flavors we wanted. We will definitely be back!

I have to say this might be the best ice cream I've ever had. Perfect texture, density and creaminess, not overly sweet, great robust favors and quality ingredients. Every flavor we tried was delicious! My favorite was the raspberry truffle. Even the mango was terrific. Cinnamon also great!

Somewhere we heard that Bassett's is the oldest ice cream shop in the US. We had to verify this with the workers, and they confirmed it for us. The line seemed to wax and wane as we passed by Bassett's a few times. We caught the line at a short moment. And then a line built behind us as we proceeded to sample away. There's a reason you can sample before buying. Utilize that option! I definitely tried a few flavors that sounded better than they tasted. I like that their menu offers the classics and a few unique mixes, too. My cone: I decided on the whyy experience which had butterscotch swirls and chocolate covered pretzels chunks. This flavor was awesome. Between us 3, it was agreed I had the chosen the best. I am definitely a sucker for ice cream with pretzel to give it a salty kick. If I go back, I'm getting the exact same thing! (okay maybe in addition to another scoop) BF's cone: He got guatemalan ripple which is a coffee ice cream with mocha and chocolate. The flavors were a little too much and too rich here. I'm not a big chocolate ice cream person (what?! did a girl just say that?! haha, i prefer fruity, caramel, cookie dough, etc), so this flavor wasn't for me. Friend's milkshake: oreo madness. My friend loves her sweets and she admitted the milkshake was very dense. She said it was definitely a good shake, but it took all her dessert eating/sipping powers to be able to finish this one. Short story: It's all about the WHYY experience!

  • Donald J.

Their ice cream is super premium very rich ice cream. It is cheaper then Ben and Jerry's and you get twice as much. They have many different flavors it is very hard to pick because they all sound good.

  • Jody G.

Perfect ice cream with wonderful flavors! Huge scoops..... And the price is right. Three of us shared a triple scoop cup for $6. We had one scoop each of Butter Pecan, Toffee Vanilla, and Madagascar Coffee. They were all absolutely wonderful!

  • Carrie C.

I have to stop by Reading Terminal for ice cream every time I visit Philadelphia. My boyfriend suggested that I try their ice cream because it's been around for a log time. I was overwhelmed with the combinations and flavors but I went with Moose Tracks which includes tiny peanut butter cups which are my favorite. I loved it and I probably not willing to try any other flavor any time soon.

Great Ice cream in a great marketplace! After searching through the marketplace, we found it along one of the sides (i think the north side?). The line wasn't too long. the ice cream itself was very tasty and had good texture Flavors: - moosetracks: if you like peanut butter, chocolate, and vanilla, this is really good. loved the tiny peanut butter cups - WHYY experience: loved the crunchy chocolate covered pretzels mixed in there. the caramel was great too I'd recommend those two flavors definitely and i hope to be back to try some others too. Service was very good. They forgot to make one of our ice creams, so they gave an extra scoop on the second one. How nice.

Bassetts Ice Cream is really great ice cream. There is a reason why they are the oldest continuously operating ice cream parlor in the country, and that reason is most certainly not luck. If I really must spell it out for you, that reason is their amazing ice cream -- creamy, smooth, decadent, and everything you could ever want from your ice cream. And also the friendly service. I ordered the Guatemalan Ripple and the Gadzooks! (the exclamation point is really part of their name and deservedly so), while the daughter tried the peach. The Guatemalan Ripple was delicious, but not any better than any other great chocolate ice cream I have had elsewhere. The peach was light and not at all too sweet. But the Gadzooks! was a perfect combination of peanut butter, chocolate chunks, and caramel. It was definitely worth pushing my stomach to its limit. The only thing I wish they would do is do split scoops like some of the ice cream shops I have been to. Their flavors are all intriguing but I could only eat too much, and I am not able to visit them on a regular basis (i.e. everyday or maybe every other day). I will be back next time I am in Philadelphia.

  • Karen S.

I don't really eat ice cream but it would be a shame to pass over a chance to check out the country's oldest ice cream company. The Fiancé got the Mint chip which did not taste artificial like most other mint chip ice creams; however, it was not very minute & It melted very quickly. I got the Irish coffee which was not melty & was very creamy; but it was not very Irish or very coffee. The line was insanely long but the gentlemen behind the counter were friendly, efficient, & made the line experience m much easier to get through.

  • Aishwarya B.

When we asked to try a flavor, I was told that they don't give out samples to taste. It's because they are common flavors and we know what they taste like. If that's the case I don't understand why there are so many ice cream shops carrying same flavors and some do well and some don't. Guess Bassetts is not unique

    (2)
  • Anna Y.

Rich and creamy thats pretty much all I could say . For $4.50 you get two huge scoops of your desired flavors , the cup looks kinda small on its own but ice cream was plenty. I suggest sharing with another person. I had green tea and dark chocolate , both were really thick and not overly sweet, but was nothing more to it . It was nice to finally try it but probably would not purchase it again.

There is a reason why this place is still open after all these years... Their ice cream is just plainly delicious. The service is fast and I appreciate that when there is a line. By the time you pay and head to the "pick up here" area, it is already waiting for you. :) Made my day trip to Philly so much better. Great price too.

  • Thomas W.

I find this to be a kind of millenial version of Gifford's famous ice cream, but without the atmosphere. I had to go for the French Vanilla. Ice Cream, and Gelato are mainstays of a more civilized society. The Scoops are certainly of All-Madden proportions. It is too bad there are not versions of the Reading Terminal in Manhattan! Philly has got a real gem here especially with Bassetts.

One of the popular dessert shops in Reading Terminal Market, Bassetts Ice Cream is certainly a place that deliver an excellent ice cream experience to you! Bassetts' ice cream flavor selection ranges from the conventional tastes to the unconventional choices. A small portion (Two scoops) is only $4.5 so we decided to choose mango, vanilla, pistachio, and English toffee crunch. Yes you can choose one flavor for each scoop! All the flavors were so good, and the ice cream quality was overall stellar! Ice cream vendors tend to BS about their ingredients' freshness, but the taste alone proved that Bassetts does indeed use top-notch quality ingredients to create their icy delights. Even though it's two scoops on the menu, you will be a sizable portion because each scoop is HUGE! Good luck trying to finish a small portion by yourself if this is your after-meal dessert. If you are in Reading Terminal Market, why not give this excellent ice cream shop a try? You won't regret it! --- tl;dr version 1. Wide selection of conventional and unconventional flavors 2. Delicious fresh ice cream! 3. Deceptively large "small portion" (2 scoops) for $4.50

Just the simple fact that Bassetts is the oldest ice cream company in the USA makes them at least 4 stars in my book. They opened up for business back in 1861!!! You can find them in Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market!! Make sure you save some room in your tummy for great tasting ice cream from Bassetts!! I've tried their Moose Tracks and their Banana ice cream flavors so far. Both were very good. I look forward to returning to Philadelphia and trying more of Bassett's yummy flavors!

Great ice cream, great service, but a little expensive to me. Husband and I got a cup with a scoop of cookie dough and a scoop of strawberry.

  • Azinda M.

Most noticeable thing about Bassetts? CREAMY. I got a cup with the banana (my favorite flavor of ice cream EVER, don't judge!) as well as their "The Whyy Experience" which is vanilla ice cream with butterscotch swirls and chocolate covered pretzels. Need I say more? Both were great, workers are friendly, and they give HUGE portions (granted, it's a freaking 5 dollar ice cream.... but...). Anyways, Enjoy!

The running joke about Philly is that on every street corner is the "oldest" whatever. Apparently is the oldest ice cream parlor. Everything is homemade and they make some unusual flavors. We had cinnamon this time and it was terrific. Great cinnamon flavor without being too spicy. The consistency was firm yet creamy. The "small" was actually quite large and more than enough for a normal-sized human being.

Possibly the best pumpkin ice cream I've ever had. It is a little on the sweet side though. Also had a scope of moosetrack ice cream which definitely hits the spot if you're craving a chocolate and pb combo.

  • Latoya G.

I only got the banana because my 2 year old asked for it.. Definitely wouldn't have been my choice, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was really good. Like a natural banana flavor, not too sweet. I enjoyed it!

I haven't really met a huge ice cream cone I didn't enjoy, so this place automatically gets high marks. I like that they have some great flavors that are chock full of stuff, like the one I tried, the Gadzooks (chocolate ice cream with peanut butter brownies and chocolate pieces). I also like that they give you a nice sizable portion for a reasonable price. There's nothing worse than getting a cone with a tiny scoop resting on top, where the entire cone is devoid of ice cream once you finish the scoop on top. This one was nicely packed with a few scoops. I don't get the major love for this ice cream though - the stuff at Franklin Fountain and Little Baby's Ice Cream is way better. There are also a ton of other more unique and tastier sweets throughout the market, so I probably wouldn't bother with Bassett's as frequently unless I have a specific craving for some ice cream.

  • Roopa S.

Mmmm this ice cream may be my favorite in Philadelphia. I tried the Moose Tracks and Guatemalan Ripple and was blown away by both flavors. The man serving me gave me two heaping scoops of ice cream so I felt like there was some great value here, and the quality of the ice cream was just unparalleled. So rich and creamy, and I couldn't even finish one small serving (and I usually can finish a pint of Ben & Jerry's, no shame). Definitely try it. It'll change your world!

    (5)
  • Laura W.

The icecream here is amazing! You definitely get what you pay for with their big portions. I got the Irish coffee which was true to taste and had a hint of baileys flavor which I loved! My friend had gotten the rum raisin which also had a kick of rum to it making it true to the flavor. I would definitely go back here next time I am in philly

  • Augustina G.

Very rich, sugary, and flavorful ice cream. It's good ice cream, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't consider this as something that has changed my tastebuds for the rest of my life. I got the WHYY experience and I'm not a fan of chocolate covered pretzels, but this ice cream made me want to not stop eating them! I also tried the chocolate marshmallow and that was super rich. Great stuff. Unfortunately, asking for a lid became something of an arduous task. I'm all about employees having fun, but when it takes away from paying attention to a customer's needs and them having to ask multiple times for the same thing, that's when it becomes a problem.

Only had a couple flavors here, but both tasted like chemicals. Not sure why people give this such good reviews...generic tub ice cream in the grocery store tastes better.

  • Erin B.

this ice cream is hands down delicious. the line may be long, but you can wait. Reading Terminal market is always bustling. They are used to the wait. You pay with cash, and try to know what you want before you get in line. It's just easier that way, ok? The ice cream flavors are very unique and very rich. i couldn't bear to finish my cone, i didn't want my cone's and my relationship to be over. Raspberry truffle. just saying it makes me hungry again. great value for the price, you will get what you pay for and you will love it. don't miss this if you are in Reading Terminal!

  • I I.

Went here and got a taste of two different flavors: butter almond and the WHYY Experience. I could taste that the ice cream was much richer than normal and not the cheap variety. The quality would be same as any other premium ice cream (e.g, Häagen-Dazs). The chocolate covered pretzels in they WHYY Experience were a bit off for me as they pretzel got penetrated and made it taste sorta soggy, which was an off texture for me.

  • Yiwen S.

delicious homemade ice cream. funky innovative flavors are a must try. a mandatory stop on a hot summer's day when passing through reading terminal. prices are comparable-- $4.50 for two scoops. a small price to pay for a happy stomach. and service with a smile.

Growing up in the Philly suburbs I've grown up eating Bassetts ice cream but haven't had it in years. I stopped in after a conference last week at the convention center and got two scoops - cookies and cream and the WHYY experience. I was blown away at just how good this ice cream is. Super creamy and rich in flavor!!

Err...am I missing something? Yes, the ice cream was good. I especially appreciated that there was no shortage of candy chunks in my English Toffee scoops. However, I don't get what the hype is about. In my opinion, the ice cream was extremely hard. I thought the thing that was supposed to make it extra delicious was the high percentage of butterfat. I don't really know what butterfat is, but I imagined that it would make the ice cream super creamy and soft. That wasn't the case. It just tasted like regular old ice cream. God help me for the comparison, but honestly it was no different than Friendly's to me. Sorry!

I got the Vanilla Cherry two scoops. One of the best if not THE best ice cream I've ever had. Not much else to say

  • Daniel F.

May possibly be the best ice cream I've ever had. I usually try my favorite (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough) and then a house special (in this case, their feature flavor of the day which was Cinnamon). The Cinnamon scoop blew my mind. Unique and delicious. In addition, the guys happily stayed open an extra 5 minutes for us (we called them as we were flying through downtown Philly) and were cheerful about it! Great customer service.

Hey the classic flavors are good but go for one of their signature blend!! We had the Guatemalan Ripple & WHHHYYY Experriece both tasty!

You like ice cream - you'll LOVE Bassetts. Seeing as this place is America's oldest ice cream company :o and was established in 1861, I knew I had to hit it up when I made it over to Reading Terminal. With all of the other dessert options in the market, I knew I would be eating loads of sugar, so I did actually hesitate for a second and asked myself if I really needed to get ice cream too....well the answer was definitely yes :D Boy it did not disappoint. And they had such incredible flavor options!! I thought it would be very dumb of me to just get one type of ice cream, so I asked if they could do two flavors for the single scoop portion and they were super nice about it and let me do that easily! I was amazed that they had my two all time favorite flavors - cinnamon and dark chocolate!! So I of course went with those :) DELCIOUS. First of all, the portion sizes were so hefty!! My cup was ginormous to still be considered a single scoop! More importantly, the ice cream was ultra, ULTRA high quality!!! SUPER premium, as they say. Beyond creamy richness. If you are anywhere near the Market, or Philadelphia, or Pennsylvania...or out east...YOU HAVE TO COME HERE.

Bassetts Ice Cream always seemed to have a long line. It was a hot day so I couldn't NOT have Ice Cream. I decided on their Peach Ice Cream among their numerous various flavors and it was soooo good! I got the smallest size in a cup and it was more than enough for 2. The ice cream was a fresh and cool treat.

It's so hard to find cinnamon ice cream. They had it and it was amazing. Good sized scoops, too. Annoying though that it had spilled sprinkles on it.

  • Soly Z.

Ordered single scoops of the mango and moose track ice cream and they were both good, but I still don't get the hype. Nothing unusually delicious or special, but we did enjoy our ice cream. They accept all credit cards, including Amex, which is a plus.

A can't miss at Reading Terminal. Literally, the sign basically takes up half the wall. First and foremost, the ice cream is amazingly rich and creamy. Had the butter almond and peanut butter simultaneously and it was a wonderland of flavors that worked perfectly together. No cone necessary. Second off, at $2 a scoop, it's well worth the investment. I have no idea why there's no line at this place every time I go, but so it is. Wish there was some seating in the area, but it would be crowded if there was. Bring it somewhere and enjoy.

16.5% butterfat in the wrong context is something of a taboo phrase that you probably shouldn't even whisper in conversation, much less use as the first thing to say in an ice cream review. However, the fact that Bassetts decided to say "YES" to amazing flavor and "NO" to diet fads and books brings me great joy in writing and reminiscing on my experience at the oldest parlor in the US. As a tourist, it can be a little hard navigating the Reading Terminal Market so be ready to do a little searching but once you find the place, you'll immediately smell that infamous waffle scent. I'm a cup kind of guy so I can't speak for the cones but as for the ice cream: (Just to be clear so I don't have to keep repeating this, besides the banana, each flavor was creamy and rich as hell and made me really horny . . .) 1) Vanilla: the barometer of any good ice cream parlor, Bassetts definitely hit a huge home run with this. Very strong vanilla scent. Wouldn't say it's a MUST try but definitely allowed the quality of the ice cream to shine without any add-ons. 2) Butter Pecan: My favorite. Hands down. I've noticed that when parlors tend to up the butterfat content of their ice cream, the butter pecan always gets a huge bonus boost. Definitely worth trying! 3) Cookies & Cream/Cookie Dough: These two were kind of mashed together and at the bottom of my cup so I kind of ate a conglomeration of the two. Which tasted very good actually so if you're feeling adventurous . . . not an overwhelming amount of cookie dough which was appreciated. 4) Peanut Butter Swirl: This was one of those ones that was really good but since everything else was also really good, it just didn't have that oomph! But peanut butter fans should definitely try it although I kind of wished it had a stronger peanut butter flavor. I think the vanilla might be a little overpowering. 5) Banana: Didn't work for me. Don't really know why. Banana flavor tasted a little sourish but it might have just been me because my friend got it and thought it was bomb. Prices are very very reasonable and they give you a sizable portion for each scoop. It does get crowded especially with the traffic of people walking through but with 16.5% butterfat, a little pushing and shoving might shave off a couple extra calories :)

Moose Tracks. That's all you need to know. A bit pricier than what I'm used to, but I had to try some since there aren't any locations in NY. Quick service and friendly staff. I'll definitely go back to sample more flavors.

  • Susan C.

I saw Bassetts on some food show a few years back, so I knew I had try their ice cream when I was visiting Philly. Since we were already at Reading Terminal for DeNic's Roast Pork, we swung by this spot after our pork sammys for dessert. The lines were crazy. Apparently I came on a bad weekend because when I was eating my Raspberry Chocolate ice cream outside I learned there was an NA convention in town that weekend that flooded Reading Terminal with people during lunch hour. The ice cream was definitely rich and creamy, but I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any flavors more interesting than the standard fare.

  • Mona C.

WOW, hands down, the nest ice cream I've ever had! Not too sweet, with the flavors true to taste (that's rare in the artificial flavors and colors world, my friends). Mm. I had the pistachio, and it is to die for. Will try ALL OF THEM one day :D

    (5)
  • Bobby C.

Their scoops are really big. We got a scoop each of the Guatemalan Ripple and Moose Tracks. Guatemalan Ripple was just ok...was not expecting the coffee ice cream to be that bold? Moose Tracks was good. $4 for two scoops.

    (4)
  • Joe P.

Descriptive phrase: classic ice cream. It's the oldest ice cream in the country, and it's still around for a reason. Find the little counter stand on the west side of Reading Terminal Market. Grab a bowl or cone and find a seat on the curb where you can. Fast, cheap, and easy. My Moose Tracks ($4) were delicious.

    (4)
  • Pat J.

Solid ice cream place. I got the waffle cone with butter pecan and pistachio. Both flavors were absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately I couldn't finish them both and that's the only negative part.

    (5)
  • Eun L.

I think this is the best ice cream I have ever had. I ordered the coffee flavor and was blown away by how creamy and smooth the ice cream was. It's truly spectacular and lives up to all the hype. I highly recommend you try it.

1995 was a sad year for the Philadelphia food landscape. That was the year an evil Dutch conglomerate decided to close the Philadelphia Breyers factory and in doing so more or less crowned Bassetts the head Phila ice cream company in charge (HPICCIC). It must have felt a lot like how the AFC East felt after Tom Brady tore his ACL in 2008. I don't hold any ill will towards Bassetts I just prefer Ned Stark over Joffrey Baratheon but the other day boo and I were at RTM and I said, these flavors sound pretty good do you want to get some. With her the answer is always yes when it comes to ice cream so we got in line and before we knew it we were up. I began ordering and about half way through me saying the flavor I wanted I was wrung up and paying and shuffled along down the line. No biggie, I can appreciate prompt service even when it teeters on the line of rudeness. I got the java chip and boo got the French vanilla. Extremely underwhelming, we didn't even feel like finishing it (we did of course though strictly out of principal). There was nothing wrong with Bassetts there just wasn't anything special about it and I'm always disappointed when Philadelphia icons don't live up to their billing (see Smith, Will. - Hancock).

I love ice cream. I'm supposed to be dieting. I'm going to lose the pool at work... thankyou $6 milkshakes. NOM.

  • Victoria C.

4 dollars for two scoops. 5 dollars for three. These were large scoops! I got the WHYY Experience and dark chocolate chip. The dark chocolate chip was meh, nothing too special--could definitely taste the chocolate. The Whyy experience, however, was extremely special. The vanilla ice cream was rich, thick and creamy, which perfectly complemented the crispy saltiness of the chocolate covered pretzel pieces and the butterscotch. Would definitely come again.

This place further proves that Pennsylvannia produces great ice cream! My last experience was at the Penn State Creamery. I had the chance to taste both the gadzooks and the green tea which were yummy. The consistency of Bassett's is super smooth and creamy!

    (4)
  • Gregory H.

Excellent, excellent ice cream. By far my favorite in Philly. So creamy! Sometimes the lines are a bit long and the store does close at 6pm but absolutely worth it. I especially like picking up a quart of chocolate chip cookie dough to go.

    (5)
  • Sarah R.

I love Bassett's! I've had their french vanilla, green tea, and eggnog flavors so far. I always get the waffle cone with two scoops, and its price fairly and I never am disappointed. Its smooth, creamy, and rich - just the way it should be. All the flavors I've tried are made well, not overpowering or too light. Makes me want to forgo all the ice cream cartons you find at the grocery store. This place has won me over for "Best Ice Cream!"

  • Ann H.

Took the grandkids a few times when visiting from California. The service is wonderful and ice cream is delicious. I would give an extra star just because of Chris...my granddaughter dropped her ice cream as soon as she got it. He was kind enough to replace it...great customer service. We will be back!

    (5)
  • Shayla V.

Got the cookies and cream on a waffle cone. Not sure it was worth as much as I ended up paying for it, but it was pretty good. It melted quicker than I could eat it, but, y'know, don't put yourself into situations you can't handle...like ones that involve huge scoops of ice cream and no time to eat it. Quick, clean, convenient for a hearty (and expensive) cone or cup. People crowd where you're supposed to pick up the ice cream. It's annoying, but if you cough a lot they'll move out of the way. I've lived in Philly my entire life and my first time here was yesterday. Not the best ice cream, but certainly not the worst. The most I can say is: if you're looking for some ice cream, here it is.

  • Camela W.

My last day in Philly and decided to hit up the Reading Terminal Market. SO GLAD I DID! This was one of the gems I found walking around and looking at the different vendors. I ordered a Mudslide and it was so perfect and delicious. The best coffee ice cream I'd had in a long while. Also, for my lactose intolerant friends, they have non-dairy sorbet as well. I didn't have a chance to try it, but if it's anything like their ice cream, it should be awesome. This is a must go!!

    (5)
  • Ancernetta O.

I stopped in on 2 occasions the weekend I was in town. i had the pecans and praline ice cream on a waffle cone. I had only 1 scope and it was huge! It could feed to people! Some of the best ice cream that I have ever had! I will be going back!

    (5)
  • Brian S.

Bassett's mint chocolate chip is great and their peanut butter is sweet, but for a holiday treat a scoop of pumpkin and cinnamon in a sugar cone can't be beat.

    (5)
  • Mike S.

Had the Gadzooks Blanc and it was delicious! Kudos to Preston & Steve (local morning radio show 93.3 WMMR) vanilla ice cream with caramel swirls, chocolate chunks and peanut butter brownies. Had it in a waffle cone (so good)! Last time I had their mint chocolate chip and that was delicious as well! If you have room for dessert after having lunch (DiNics) somewhere in the Reading Terminal Market I highly reccomend Bassetts! You will not be disappointed!

    (4)
  • Thomas A.

line can be long but it goes by quickly. Vanilla mixed in with PB&J is a winner! Their pistachio is very yummy too. You get a minimum of 2 scoops, and you can mix up 2 flavors, or stick to 2 scoops of the same flavor. The flavors are on rotation, so be on the lookout up top. If you see PB&J then get it. You will not regret it.

My friend and I wanted to bring some ice cream home and the staff packed our ice cream safely in dry ice for us to enjoy hours layer. The mint chocolate chip Ice cream was delicious and the service was great.

  • Joseph F.

I'm actually giving this 4.5 stars. It was delicious ice cream - rich and creamy. It really hits the spot on a hot and humid day in Philly. The chocolate ice cream is my favorite and the banana is a close second. I also loved the milkshakes. In fact, the milkshakes may have beaten out the famous shake shack of New York. Gotta try this place people!

    (4)
  • Janet E.

Milky, creamy, thick, and delicious pralines and cream. Two huge heaping scoops as well. I heard that the first flavor that they ever debuted was tomato!!! I don't think I saw that on the menu, but definitely loved the pralines and cream. Service was friendly and fast. One guy takes your payment, the other does the ice cream. Spoons come out in spoon dispensers! Cool!

    (4)
  • Teshonda Lee J.

Service was HORRIBLE! Employees touch the cones with their hands instead of using a napkin. When.I requested another cone and please dont touch my cone with your hands, the employee through the cone down and gave me a NASTY LOOK. I immediately requested a full refund.

    (3)
  • Kim O.

Ice cream? Yes please! A ton of flavors here! Strawberry had lots of strawberries mixed in and the chocolate was delicious. Staff is super efficient and made the long line go by quickly. Try it!

    (5)
  • Mayan K.

The long line is worth the wait. Simply the best ice cream in the area (and by area I mean North America).

    (5)
  • Ben B.

Oh, man. I loved their pumpkin ice cream. I had it twice during my stay in Philadelphia. The only thing keeping them from a fifth star is the fact that their employees were needlessly pushy. Look, man, I'll give you my order when you ask for it. Don't act like I'm putting you out if you haven't asked me what I want yet. Jerks... Delicious jerks.

The history of this place alone is a good reason to want to go to Bassetts. I remember seeing them on Ice Cream Paradise being amazed at how long it's been around. Atmosphere: In the Reading Terminal Market, which is an all-around awesome place. I love the set up. I was there with a friend around 1pm on a Wednesday and there was seating around the counter. Ice Cream: You may be overwhelmed by how many flavors there are. We took a super long time deciding, but I ended up with two scoops in a waffle cone- Gadzooks and Mint Chocolate Chip. Both were DELICIOUS. I wish I wasn't so full after DiNic's. No matter what you're craving (citrus, chocolate, etc), they have it. Service: They call you sweetheart and darling when they talk to you, it makes me all smitten =) They also have self serve water at the counter. They know how to treat you right here. I'm glad I had the chance to try Bassetts.

    (4)
  • Adrienne A.

yes. Great ice cream. Incidentally, Bassett's is America's first commercial ice cream maker and really has stood the test of time. I've tried their coffee and praline flavors and could really go for a cone--or pint, right now...

    (5)
  • Yaka H.

You get 2 big scoops of ice cream... that means the chance to try 2 yummy flavors for indecisive me. After much debating, I ended up going with the WHYY experience (vanilla ice cream with chocolate-covered pretzels and butterscotch) and Gadzooks Blanc (vanilla version of Gadzooks; vanilla ice cream with pb brownie pieces). This ice cream was thick, dense, and creamy in a very yummy way. You just know this is hefty good stuff when you're trying to scoop up a bite with the plastic spoon. Service here is super prompt and quick.

  • Kitty K.

Visiting Philly in March earlier this year, we were directed to this creamery by another shop owner in the Reading Terminal. Super glad too! The ice cream is so creamy and has prominent flavors. We had ordered the Guatemalan Ripple (which is Guatemalan-sourced coffee ice cream with mocha fudge ripple, blended with mini-coffee filled chocolates), banana & pistachio. If I ever go back, I definitely want to try the Gadzooks! which is decadent chocolate ice cream with pieces of Brownie Points peanut butter brownies, chocolate chunks and a rich caramel swirl. Must try!

  • Michelle R.

I don't see what all the hype is about. My ice cream was hard as rock and pretty bland. It had obviously melted then re-freezed. The service was pretty bad too. They were really nervous when they were taking my order and only gave me one topping when I asked for two, and were really frazzled about it. I'd rather spend the calories on fifth street cookies just a few feed down.

    (2)
  • Matt S.

Ordered a two scoop cone. What I got was something for a giant. I'm not sure what kind of two scoop they use at Bassett's, but this could have been a solid four scooper. Ordered the Pralines & Cream. Delicious. Very satisfied. While eating the ice cream, a homeless guy told a joke for a buck and it went a little something like this. "What do you call a black guy that flies a plane?" We said...IDK? "A pilot you racists!" Laughing ensued with no dollars being handed out. Sorry brah.

  • Tim S.

After mowing down a sandwich in the Market, I wanted some ice cream. Its always time for ice cream right? I ordered a 2 scoop waffle cone and it came out to $4.75. I got one scoop of cookies and cream and one scoop of vanilla fudge. The cone was still warm, the ice cream was smooth and it tasted great. I would definitely return! They have been making ice cream since like 1861! Crazy eh? Good stuff!

Who doesn't love icecream. This is the oldest ice cream shoppe in the US. Just had to try it! I kept it simple and had my all time favorite flavor: Butter Pecan. And it was DELICIOUS. Simple, tasty, flavorful and rich. I don't think I have tasted a butter pecan ice cream better than this. Blown away. Will be back every time I return to Philly. My other love, scoop deville, just took a back seat. Try it but keep it simple to enjoy the rich flavor of the icecream.

  • Kelly B.

First off I'd like to admit to having an ice cream addiction since childhood. I've had Ice cream from basically every popular ice cream parlor in Philadelphia. I really LOVE Bassets ! My favorite is the praline n cream that I had the pleasure of enjoying at the reading terminal the other day. In the past I have had Gadzooks and vanilla peanut butter at the little candy shop on liberties walk in norther liberties ( both delicious). The ice cream is full fat which results in full taste and added inches to my waist that I'm willing to accept for this amazing frozen treats Bassetts makes ! Bassetts is also America's oldest ice cream parlor in operation since 1871 I believe. Therefore if you visit them at reading terminal you are eating America's oldest ice cream in the oldest indoor market in America :)

    (4)
  • Nataly N.

Mmmmm... Irish Coffee and Rum Raisin... I would be willing to sacrifice all reasonable eating habits for these two flavors. They have so many other awesome flavors to try, but it's so hard for me to peel away from these ones every time I come here. I don't know if it's just me, though, but Bassetts ice cream seems a bit watery. Most ice cream has no chance to melt before I devour it, but this ice cream always liquefies before I can finish it, even as I stand in the frigid air of the Reading Terminal Market.

  • Brian N.

Was over from the UK with my wife for three days and told her that we had to make a beeline to Bassett's. I'd been there a few years ago with my son and couldn't believe how good their ice cream was. She was, as usual, dubious about one of my recommendations and went along to keep me quite. Well after a daily dose of Praline & Cream she is now hooked just as much as me! Bassett's ice cream is stupendous. Rich, thick, creamy and so so tasty. If only we could get it in the UK (:-( Ah well good job it's not available, as it's so dangerously addictive!!

    (5)
  • Michael G.

Lots of flavors, great tasting ice cream, as the Yelp stars say - as good as it gets! Lines can get long, touristy, but the locals come often, too. They take LevelUp!

    (5)
  • Trishia P.

Noted as one of America's oldest ice cream companies....had to try it: The WHYY experience...vanilla with caramel and salty pretzels! YUMMMM! Ice cream texture was not that creamy to me. Big servings though!!

    (4)
  • Tiffany L.

It seems like you can't go wrong with any flavor! Mocha chip, toffee almond crunch, the whyy experience (has mini PB cups in it), guatemalan ripple (coffee swirled with chocolate/fudge?), irish coffee, pomegranate blueberry (has chocolate pieces in it) . All were good. Their serving sizes are actually a little TOO much. I always finish regardless, but it makes me stuffed afterwards! You may want to share, but then again, maybe not!

  • Jenn G.

Bassetts is a Philadelphia staple. It's hard not to fall in love with their old school classic ice cream. My favorite is their Gadzooks Blanc: vanilla ice cream with caramel swirls, chocolate chunks and peanut butter brownies. The ice cream is smooth and creamy. Their portions are huge and well worth the price tag. There are only two draw backs about Bassetts: 1.) All the flavors are delicious it's hard to pick one. 2.) It's in Reading Terminal Market so it closes pretty early. What are you waiting for!? Go get some Bassetts before Reading Terminal closes for the day!

    (5)
  • Lisa R.

Let's talk butterfat. I saw green tea and knew I had to have it. Then I say the WHYY experience. I asked, "What is the why experience?" but learned that may refer to a local radio station...woops! Butterscotch vanilla with chocolate covered pretzels! I sampled and fell in love. Waffle cone, WHYY, green tea, and bliss.

  • Diana W.

One of the oldest ice cream joints situated in Reading Terminal Market! Very good ice cream! I tried their popular gadzooks flavor, strawberry and their vanilla. Amazing!! Need I say more? Now go out and get Type 2 diabetes.

  • Jennifer B.

Nestled in Reading Terminal Market is some of the best ice cream you will ever have, we make it a point of stopping here to give into our sweet craving for the day. This place is a historical landmark and still dishes up some great ice cream even today. I've gotten multiple flavors and on the this trip my Mom and I shared the Moose Tracks on a waffle cone. Very yummy with little peanut butter cups. Totally worth the trip. Don't be overwhelmed by all the choices, you should really get multiple flavors of the same cone so you make sure you try as many flavors as possible.

  • Carol C.

I am an ice-cream addict, and this place is one of the best. I always get the half mocha chip and half english toffee and it never fails to melt my heart. Although the actual chocolate chip pieces could be better, the ice cream itself is super creamy. No doubt it's probably filled with saturated fat, but I guess you can't do ice-cream any other way. Because it's actually made in the terminal, there isn't much of those frozen ice crystals or grainy taste. Thank you, Bassetts, for bringing ice-cream to this country :)

  • Constance A.

I came here back in early September. Delicious ice cream. Sort of pricey but worth it. I got two scoops, one scoop of green tea ice cream (I think) and one scoop of chocolate fudge ice cream for $4 or $5. I came remember. Really enjoyed it. Prepared for a long line.

    (4)
  • Sam H.

I have two words to describe why this is awesome ice cream - butterfat content. Every bite you ingest, you can feel your arteries clogging. It is fantastic. It's creamy and the flavors are just wonderful. Whenever I'm in Reading Terminal Market, I always get ice cream here. It's worth the calories.

  • Ajay B.

Ice cream is 1 of those things I'm starting to realize, that you can find great quality almost anywhere these days. So when I come across 1 that's just average, it's pretty disappointing. I don't think I've ever had an ice cream that I didn't like, and I probably never will. So it's not that this is bad, but it's pretty easy to find better. Great location for these guys being in Reading Terminal Market... TONS of traffic all day

  • Manuel H.

Great ice cream butter pecan on chocolate sugar cone yummy,Guatemalan Ripple for the wife, Vanilla Fudge with whipped cream for my daughter, chocolate w/whip cream for my son. didn't have to ask how's the ice cream because ,before I knew it they were all scrapping the bottom of the cup especially my wife who's 7months pregnant.

  • Eli G.

The oldest ice cream shop in the country. A-Okay. yelp.com/biz_photos/qcn1… Long lines in a crowded market to get that cone, but it was kind of worth it. The ice cream was good, not mind blowing though. Not as good as some of the soft-serve custard we had around the city.

  • Jen C.

Came here for something to soothe my belly after eating some jambalaya bowl and jalapeño peppers at a shop nearby. I was super disappointed that they ran out of milk for milkshakes though!! Ended up getting 2 scoops; 1 vanilla butterscotch and 1 green tea. I also took a bite of my friend's moose track flavor. Absolutely delicious! I can't wait to come back to try other flavors (and hopefully their milkshakes!).

Like everyone else mentioned best mint chocolate chip ever, and the butter pecan basically tasted like fresh cream. I don't think I need to say anything else.

A sweet spot in Reading Terminal Market. Service -- Lots of ice cream flavours to choose from, some have "interesting" names that require interpretation and explanation if are not a local. Luckily, the guy behind the counter is about the friendliest and the most patient server you can ask for Flavours -- Guatemalan Ripple (coffee ice cream with choco-covered coffee bits) is one of the best coffee-based ice cream I've tasted. Gadzooks or Gadzooks Blanc, may impress Ben & Jerry or Coldstone crowd who like lots of "stuff" and textures added into their ice cream. Me, I like to be able to taste the ice cream and these two flavours had too much "distraction". 3.5 stars.

  • Johnson H.

I recently visited Philly and made my second ever visit to Bassetts and I was surprised. I scanned through their board of flavors for the day and end up ordering a scoop in a cup of their mango/apricot ice cream. Well at first I thought it was ice cream, but after my first taste I realized it was sorbet. I was a little disappointed cause I wanted ice cream but, it's flavors had me quickly decide that this was a great alternative. So much flavor can only be attained in using fresh fruits and I was able to taste the mango and the apricot separately in this sorbet. It was definitely a wonderful cold treat!

  • Dianna L.

Best mint chocolate chip ice cream I've ever had. I go now just to get the pints of it. It's a great deal for 4 bucks! All the flavors are great though. Pretty much can't go wrong with what ever you choose.

Best ice cream I've ever had! The line can get crazy because it's in the Reading Terminal Market, but the Guatemalan Ripple (coffee/chocolate) and Gadzooks! (choc/caramel/peanut butter) are absolutely worth the wait. They also give you a crazy amount of ice cream, and i can almost never finish a whole cone by myself!

What's not to like about chocolate chip ice cream on a 85 degree day in sunny Philadelphia? The ice cream on a cup is a generous 2 scoops to keep you happy as you tour the market.

We went to Reading Terminal Market to try the "world famous" Bassett's ice cream. I had high expectations, and they were not met. The service was bad- it wasn't busy at 5 o clock on a Thursday, the first worker took our order and then stood around while a second worker was scooping someone else's ice cream. This second scooper finished and then ran off (probably to the restroom) and we still had not received our ice cream. The first worker stood around or did dishes. When the second scooper returned, he started working on someone else's ice cream so we let him know we hadn't received our scoop yet. Once we finally got it, the ice cream was nothing special (comparable to Edy's/Dryer's). I definitely enjoyed Franklin's Fountain's ice cream much more (higher quality!) The price here was good for what you get ($4 for two scoops) but I was certainly underwhelmed.

Chocolate chip cookie dough! DELICIOUS! The last time we dropped by bassetts, a few years back, I got chocolate chip cookie dough. And no lie... it is the creamiest most delicious chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream i've probably ever had. Haagendaz, move out of the way... because if Bassetts finds its way into Manhattan. Yes, Manhattan, I would probably never visit Haagendaz ever again. DELISH!

I love Bassetts! I used to work in Reading Terminal Market and almost every day in the Summer would get a free small cup of vanilla with gummy bears from my friends over there. Since moving on, I still visit Bassetts almost every time I'm in the area. All of the flavors I've tried have been absolutely delicious. I'd recommend trying the Peach, Butter Pecan, chocolate chip cookie dough or plain vanilla. I'd get the sugar waffle cone unless it's winter when the cup comes in handy. The small size is huge and I can never finish the whole thing. Everything is also super affordable making Bassetts one of my favorite stops for a frozen treat!

  • Jeanna L.

Yum! I had the Heath bar ice cream and it was so deliciously smooth! it was less airy than your normal ice cream and less syrupy than gelato. I would definitely want to come back and try all the flavors.

I went to the popular Reading Terminal Market with long lost friend in a busy Saturday. Got the Banana on a regular cone. Wished they had a single scope. We were full from eating nearby at Garces. My ice cream was old. It had a lof of ice crystal. I would have enjoyed it more if it was a warm or hot day. I will return.

When I arrived at Bassett's there was one person in front of me. The person who took our order was friendly and cheerful. Me and my friend split an order of 2 scoops ($4.50) in a cup with a cone on top that we crumbled as a mix in into the ice cream. We ordered one scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough and one scoop of English toffee, the scoops were pretty big. The "cookie dough" was the scoop on top and turned out to be just chocolate chip as we did not encounter any cookie dough balls in this scoop. When we got to the English toffee we realized it was coffee ice cream instead. I went back to Bassett's and explained what happened and they have me an extra large scoop of the English toffee. Even though our orders were the wrong flavors, it was rectified and the ice cream we had was delicious. It was creamy and smooth. The English toffee was full of delicious toffee, the coffee ice cream was full of coffee flavor, but wasn't too strong. The sugar cone that's came with our ice cream was crunchy and not too sweet. I would definitely come back to Bassett's for more ice cream. I would recommend getting a cup and not a cone as it seemed that the scoops were bigger in the cup as opposed to the cone, or order the ice cream in a cup with the cone on top.

$4.75 for 3 Scoops Quick service... Reasonable prices... Mint & Chip... Nothing extraordinary.... Moose Tracks... Vanilla ice cream with chocolate swirl with peanut butter cups... Super good. Gadzooks! Chocolate ice cream with peanut butter brownie, chocolate chunks and caramel swirl! Fabulous... Must try!!!

Really great ice cream! It must be PA's dairy and local farms. Ice cream is good in general but when you have Bassett's ice cream, you can taste the difference. It's milky and creamy but not overly rich. We got the butter pecan and cookies 'n cream - both were delicious! Definitely coming here again.

I will start this review with a quote from my mother-- "I don't think people in Philadelphia know what good ice cream tastes like." LOL. So true. We had a scoop of Gadzooks! and a scoop of Irish Coffee. The ice cream is NOT SMOOTH... I could actually feel bits of ice in it. Gadzooks! is supposed to be chocolate ice cream with bits of peanut butter brownies, chocolate chunks, and caramel swirl. Really? Are you sure you didn't just give me a scoop of plain Chocolate ice cream instead? Because I didn't see anything mixed in except 1 teeny tiny chocolate chip. Everyone raves about the Green Tea, so I thought I'd try it and give Bassetts a chance to redeem themselves. Nope. I would put money that the Green Tea Ice Cream is made using a powered flavoring because I could feel the undissolved grains of powder. Sorry Philadelphians, but what is going on with you guys? I can think of many places that make better ice cream than Bassetts'... yet you've rated them 4.5 stars?

Hard to pass up some ice cream for dessert after pigging out on something else at the Terminal! Can't really go wrong with any flavor they have, but I have a hard time leaving chocolate behind!

Got the moosetracks ice cream! Creamy and delish! Definitely would go again when visiting Philly.

I was here on wednesday at Reading Terminal Market. I went with the 3 scoops here. Two of the Peanut Butter Swirl and One of Dark Chocolate. I loved it, I got there near closing time of the entire market for I only had a few tastes of the ice cream before it was time to go. The three scoops together was $4.75 plus tax. I took the rest to go and ate right as I was about to get on the SEPTA....I just felt like taking the train there in Philly just to check out their system mostly and to get back near the spot of my bus pickup. I think the ice cream was good. Was thinking of getting the Gadzooks! i SHOULD have probably sampled it. Maybe next time I try it.

Love Bassetts, the only ice cream I've had that comes close to the taste and quality of Handel's (my all time favorite) Wonder selection of flavors, WHYY Experience is AWESOME! Ice Cream Scoopers are always friendly even when there is a line.

  • Caitlin V.

Yum yum yum! Bassetts has lots of flavors, is of a high quality, and is darn tootin' delicious. Not to mention it's in one of my favorite spots - Reading Terminal Market. There's really no frills here. It's all about the product. One scoop is more than enough (I'd say one scoop here is about 8 ounces). Last time I had some of their ice cream it was Dark Chocolate Chip and it was heavenly delicious but I'm also a huge fan of their Mint Chocolate Chip. This place is probably where you want to go on these hot summer Philly days.

    (5)
  • Christy L.

I love Bassetts ice cream! I always go for chocolate. It's very creamy and the chocolate flavor is really strong (and not too sweet or too fake). Green tea is also good. The best ice cream in philly.

  • Laura S.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with reviewer Nicole C. in her assessment of Bassetts. I was really unimpressed with their ice cream. I ordered a Guatemalan Ripple which is described as "Guatemalan-sourced coffee ice cream with mocha fudge ripple, blended with mini-coffee filled chocolates". The ice cream is dense but ICY. I zoomed up at the picture I took of it and can see that it's not a smooth, creamy consistency. I had sampled several other flavors and actually didn't particularly like any of them, but chose the Guatemalan Ripple after the girl behind the counter recommended it. In fact, I really didn't want to order anything, but only felt obliged to since I had tried 3 flavors already. I really found nothing that differentiated their ice cream from something that you could buy from the supermarket. In fact, I would dare to say that Haagen-Dazs is better.

  • Noheli T.

If ice cream was healthier I would probably eat it for every meal! I honestly cannot get enough of it! Bassetts is always my go to place when I'm at Reading Terminal Market so of course I ran over and indulged! At first the prices seem a bit high but I ordered the 3 scoop for $5 and it was the best decision ever! The girl working behind the counter overflowed my cup with moose tracks and I was in heaven! My only wish is that they had cake batter there as well but I was too happy to let that get me down! I ate all of it and it was delicious!

  • Ben D.

I'll be that guy. Bassett's is decent ice cream, but you are honestly better off going elsewhere. The ice cream is overpriced, and has a lot of air similar to Edy's or Breyer's (although not as 'gummy' as those are). If you are in the market, you will have better ice cream and a shorter line at Miller's Twist. Elsewhere, I'd recommend More Than Just Ice Cream on the 1100 block of Locust, or Capogiro at 13th & Sansom (although that is also a bit pricey).

  • Tyler R.

Best place to get ice cream in the city, hands down. Bassett's is known for having some of the richest, creamiest, tastiest ice cream anywhere. What you hear is absolutely true. Get any of the flavors and it will not disappoint. You might struggle to pick one with their big board of choices (at least 25 to choose from). Or, get a packed pint to go. For some pocket change, they'll give you dry ice to help keep it frozen on your travels. The cost is reasonable for the most part, especially since the serving sizes are so large, and the servers work fast--the wait in line is usually short. My directions to you: Buy a cone or pint. Enjoy. Repeat.

I love ice cream and their peanut butter ripple, raspberry truffle topped with the whyy on a sprinkled waffle cone made me giddy with delight.

  • Lan G.

Such a guilty pleasure! Great dense and rich ice cream. My favorite is green tea and macadamia nuts with waffle or sugar cone. The price is reasonable considering the quality. 2 scoops on sugar cone costs about $3.75. Next time I will have to try the Butterscotch vanilla.

    (5)
  • Alice J.

The ice cream is good and there's a ton of flavors to choose from. The guatamalan ripple and the butter almond are both pretty tasty. They also have these delicious waffle cones that are dipped in chocolate, nuts, sprinkles, etc. I prefer my ice cream a little creamier though, otherwise I'd give this place a 4.

I'm ashamed to say that I had very little expectations for Bassett's going in. Sure, I saw the glowing Yelp reviews, but ice cream occupies a strange no-man's-land between "healthy" frozen yogurt and indulgent gelato for me. A land only inhabited by grainy, icey tubs of Turkey Hill and frozen Ben and Jerry's. I'm so happy to report that the texture of the Mint Chocolate Chip turned three women (my mom, my sister, and myself) into ice cream converts. Every other Mint Chocolate Chip I've tried has had the characteristic powdery taste, and I think I always associated the texture with the flavor. However, at Bassett's, the cream was smooth and I could taste the freshness of the ice cream. It wasn't TOO sweet or TOO creamy and it was the perfect amount of indulgence after a big meal at RTM. As for the service, it was curt but seeing how fast they needed to work to meet the needs of the many people who were demanding the ice cream, I think it's understandable. I even saw someone ask for dry ice for the two-hour drive home. I call that dedication and I attribute it as much to Bassett's as to the customer himself.

  • John Q.

Hands down the best milkshakes in the city. Johnny Rockets and Shake Shack take a back seat to the milkshakes at Bassetts. There is always a line at Bassetts, especially on the weekends, so consider yourself warned. The prices are high but you get what you pay for here. The portions are huge and their fan base is constantly rising. If you find yourself in the Reading Terminal and looking for dessert, Bassetts is a great choice.

  • Traci R.

Wow! Amazing ice cream! Stopped into the Reading Market & saw the line for this ice cream. I had to get some. I treated myself to the Butterscotch Vanilla & it was heavenly! Can't wait to get back here!

  • Jacob M.

This was good ice cream, but wouldn't go out of my way to get it. We shared some of the peanut butter ice cream, which is just vanilla with peanut butter swirled in. The ice cream was pretty hard, although it wasn't icy.

    (3)
  • JP H.

fattier then regular ice cream but damn good. I had the vanilla bean and my wife had the Pralines and cream. Both were awesome. This is the kinda ice cream that you should only have every once and while because of the much high fat content though. But damn it's really good.

Long lines in Reading Terminal Market, but the delicious rum raisin was worth the wait. Charming shop.

  • LaShonda R.

I'm giving them a 4 based strictly off of their dark chocolate chip ice cream. It's a choc-o-holic 's dream! Intensely rich, creamy, chocolate ice cream loaded with chocolate chips? I swear this stuff could only taste better if it were served...let's say...on Trey Songz' abdominals. The regular chocolate was average. No ice crystals like other reviewers spoke of..Waffle cones were great. If you're in the area get you some!

There are no rules on what time of day it is for eating ice cream when visiting the Reading Terminal Market, because food is what it is all about and there are no boundaries. So after my slice of pepperoni pizza at by george, I had ice cream. You try to walk by once and stop to marvel at the sugar waffle cones being dipped into chocolate, some are then rolled into sprinkles, jimmies or nuts. Bassetts has been in the same spot of the Terminal since they opened in 1893 and it still has the original marble counters. Bassetts is the last remaining of the original tenants of the Market. Remember good old fashioned ice cream and how it used to be made with dense butterfat and rich all natural flavors? This it is and with mind blowing flavors, like champagne sorbet, where eight bottles of real champagne is used to make fifty gallons of sorbet. So I had a little drink in my sorbet, for breakfast, combined with a scoop of the apricot mango, it was delicious and refreshing. Even though you can have a dish of ice cream, I could not pass up one of those hand dipped cones, cake cones are also available. Sorbets, ice creams, sherbets, frozen yogurt in forty different flavors and most of them a highly unusual flavor. Gadzooks is Bassetts decadent chocolate ice cream with pieces of peanut butter brownies, chocolate chunks and a rich caramel swirl. The also have heath bar crunch, which was my second choice, cinnamon, Irish coffee where they use Jameson Irish whiskey mixed with rich coffee, Moose Tracks which is a dark chocolate with broken peanut butter cups though out. All totaled Bassetts has over one hundred different flavors, even though all are not available daily. They serve smoothies, chilled coffee drinks and more. Vanilla is still their top seller and the French vanilla is still made with an egg yolk custard and vanilla beans. If you have heard the name Bellissimo sorbets, ice creams and gelatos, Bassetts distributes it. Bassetts is in many ice cream parlors, restaurants and stores in Pa., De., NJ. and NY. I have since noticed that my local grocery store, Acme carries it, as well as Wawa, which is our local convenience store. This is the oldest ice cream maker in America folks and started by a Quaker teacher and farmer in his back yard in New Jersey. He made the ice cream with a mule turned churn, in 1861. In 1935 10 quarts of ice cream, packed in dry ice, was shipped via freighter from New York through the Panama Canal to the American Embassy in Tokyo. The voyage took several weeks, but the ice cream arrived in perfect condition. Bassetts Ice Cream is now available in China and being distributed to parlors, restaurants and stores. In 1959 50 tubs of borscht sherbet was made exclusively for and shipped to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Five generations later, this family owned business is growing strong and still serving some of the richest, creamiest ice cream you will ever enjoy. So after our final big feast and gathering, everyone else in my group was ready for ice cream. I looked at the lines, giggled and said you go right ahead, I'll be sitting outside at one of the little cafe tables, listening to the music of the bongos and watching the crowds go by. I'm sure glad that I had my ice cream for breakfast.

Had scoop of mac nut, and a scoop of pumpkin. Both were equally awesome. Some of the creamiest ice cream I've tried, and it wasn't overly sweet. Dam...I'm craving some right now. A definite must try if you are near the Reading Terminal.

Mmm yummers ^_^ After satisfying my savory tooth at DiNic's, I went over to Bassett's to tend to my sweet tooth and oh boy, was it a good choice. I've actually never heard of this place before, but my friend raved about it so I just had to give it a try. Unfortunately, their trademark Gadzooks ice cream was sold out (it was only 1 in the afternoon!!), so I opted for the green tea, which I was pleasantly surprised they had, and my all-time favorite - cookies 'n cream. I may have ordered a small size, but the portion was anything but. Heaping mounds of cold creaminess had me so mesmerized and drooling that I couldn't focus enough to get my money out to pay. I must say, the cookies 'n cream was a bit of a disappointment. Nothing too special there; it just melted too quickly for my liking. BUT, the green tea was unexpectedly delicious. Too often I find green tea ice cream to be lacking that characteristic robust and earthy taste of green tea; however, Bassett's version was nowhere near void of flavor. There was just the perfect amount of sweetness that toned down the bitterness you'd associate with teas, but certainly not enough to overwhelm the earthy flavor. Not to mention, it was very creamy. Bassett's, out of all the flavors you have, you won me over with green tea. I'll certainly be back.....but next time, you better have your Gadzooks ready for me to nom on.

This is definitely a Must-Hit when you go to Reading Terminal Market. The staff is very friendly and helpful! The ice cream flavors are unique. I got two scopes of Raspberry Truffle. The ice cream itself is very light and creamy and not too sugary. The raspberry flavor was very fresh tasting and I believe that they use fresh raspberries. The ice cream was filled with little chocolate truffles. I think I had one truffle at least every bite, so they definitely don't slack on quantity. The Ice Cream texture, creamy-ness and flavor was the best quality that I have ever eaten. I would definitely recommend Bassetts Ice Cream.

Rich creamy delicious pumpkin ice cream...wow, was it good! My daughter had a chocolate shake and she actually complained that it was too rich and creamy but she's used to wimpy Michigan shakes :) Green tea ice cream is also great. Huge scoops...the one scoop was as big as three scoops at a Baskin Robbins and so much better.

SO many ice cream options. And the ice cream is extremely fresh. Along with all of this you can add any of the many options and turn it into a milkshake.

  • Kaitlin L.

Hi, my name is Kaitlin, and I'm an ice-cream-aholic. I want ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And I don't want any half-assed frozen yogurt. No no, I want to be able to taste the creamy goodness. Needless to say, my friends and family have to keep me away from this side of Reading Terminal, but when the Pumpkin Ice Cream comes around, there's no stopping me. I must have it! This ice cream is not messing around, its a hearty dessert, so don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach. There is nothing worse than wasted ice cream, but keep in mind you get two big scoops so come hungry.

  • Tina P.

OK enough ice cream. Nice little treat to have inside the Reading Terminal Market. I had the English toffee ice cream which is basically vanilla ice cream with Heath bar pieces. Very creamy, exactly what I would expect. However, their sugar cone left some to be desired.

    (3)
  • Danan R.

The ice cream here is deliciously creamy. If you like chocolate, I dare you to try the gadzooks flavor although moose tracks does come in at a close second. Pistachio is also very good, as is the Whyy. Actually I have yet to dislike a flavor...

    (4)
  • Jennifer C.

Twice as nice the second time. As a Az resident I have been in Philly twice and both times Reading Terminal market was a must stop for me, and of course no trip is complete without a little ice cream! Bassetts is a great little stop with some of the best ice cream I've had... Since home-made. They always have exciting new flavors and their ice cream is so rich and creamy you just can't get enough! It's store front is adorable and reminds me of the 1950s with the counter and decorations. If you're in the area you have to let yourself indulge and feel like a kid again with this oh so delicious ice cream!

    (5)
  • Jeff C.

Gadzooks! I didn't order the signature flavor, opting to go with the English Toffee Crunch instead. I wasn't disappointed. Out of the three places we ate at Reading Terminal Market (DiNic's, Famous 4th Street Cookies), this was the only one that lived up to the hype for me. Great texture, not too light and fluffy, and yummy toffee!

  • Samantha E.

I'm a sucker for good ice cream, so to me, the price was very reasonable. I get the kids cone, which I don't believe is listed, but it is plenty for me. My favorite flavor (so far) has been the green tea ice cream. The servers are always helpful in giving suggestions and helping people decide on the size they want. Pro Tip: Go during the week to avoid that massive line that occurs on summer weekends.

  • Felisa F.

I wouldn't say the ice cream from Bassetts was "the best ice cream I've ever had" [coughMorgensternscough] but it surely is above average. What I can say is that it was the largest ice cream I've ever had considering it was "only" two scoops. I had the English Toffee and Butter Pecan in a cone [$4.75]. Both were flavorful and tasted like their names, but I wasn't blown away. The quality was on par with the price. There are a few stools around the counter but I really wouldn't count on grabbing one, especially when it's hot outside or during the lunch hour.

    (4)
  • Noelle H.

The ice cream is so creamy and dense!! If you're planning to stop here for dessert after you have lunch, save some room! I had the moose tracks and banana on a cone, which was the perfect mix. The scoops are huge!! A must if you're in Reading Terminal!

    (5)
  • Michelle P.

Before there was Ben or Jerry, there was the World Famous Bassett's Ice Cream, est. in 1861 and still going strong!!! This ice cream could give JP Licks in Boston a run for it's money... and THAT's a compliment. I had 2 scoops: The WHYY Experience (not a typo) = vanilla ice cream, chocolate covered pretzels and a caramel swirl. The other scoop? Gadzooks Blanc = vanilla ice cream, caramel swirl and chunks of chocolate and peanut butter. Yummmo!!!!!!! Plus they had 30 other flavors. Geeze! So little time, so much food to try.

    (5)
  • Alyssa K.

I had the waffle cone with one scoop of cookies 'n cream and one scoop of Gadzooks!, which is chocolate ice cream with peanut butter brownie pieces, chocolate chunks, and a caramel swirl. If you love really chocolatey, sweet, rich ice cream, Gadzooks! will not disappoint! Absolutely no complaints for either flavor. This cone was the perfect way to end a really long work day last week!

A bunch of my colleagues were talking about this famous ice cream shop in reading terminal and we had to stop by....even though we ate a gigantic slice of pizza beforehand. WELL, I guess we always have room for dessert! :] There were a bunch of flavors listed and I decided to settle for a scoop of macadamia and a scoop of butter almond on a sugar cone, which was $3.75. As expected, both were really creamy and I loved how they had so many pieces of nuts in them. Although I had to quickly eat it because it was dripping all over my hands, I thoroughly enjoyed it! ...and as i was eating my ice cream at the market, a lady approached me asking me where i got it. i should be their promoter or something. harhar

I LOVE Bassetts. I grew up going to the Reading Terminal, and 20 years later it still tastes just as good. My favorite has always been cinnamon. It's so sweet and smooth with just a little kick of spice. The staff is friendly and helpful. Don't miss! Whatever you get will be amazing (come on, even Preston and Steve love it and they're hard to impress!), but don't miss the cinnamon ice cream!

When visiting Reading (RED-ing) Terminal Market, there are two must-haves: DiNic's roast pork sandwich and Bassetts' ice cream. There is one word to describe ice cream perfection... Bassetts. With traditional flavors and unique creadtions, you will find over 40 flavors on the menu and you can't go wrong with any selection. My top three favorite flavors are the following, in order: 1. Raspberry Truffle 2. Mint Chocolate Chip 3. Gadzooks! So good your tongue has to pinch itself to make sure it's not dreaming.

We went on a Sunday afternoon & there must have been 20 people ahead of us. The line went quicker than I thought, though, so don't let the line stop you. Not too crazy about the prices (3 scoops in a waffle cone was around $6, milkshake was $6.50), but I did hit on a couple of flavors that were delish. Dark chocolate-skip that one. Irish coffee-never skip that one. Cookies and cream-tasted great at the time, but really the only one I'd get again is the Irish coffee.

  • Mai L.

With the long line and so many flavors to pick from it is very hard to make a decision. I really wanted to try everything but of course couldn't. I would say that in terms of taste, it was "just right." There is something about the flavors that was just perfect for my taste buds.

    (4)
  • Laura K.

Some of the best mint chocolate chip ice cream I have ever had. It was soft and creamy and I was sad when I got to the bottom of my cup. I would like to say when I'm in town again I'd try another one of their awesome flavors but that would be a lie, I'm just going to get the mint chocolate chip again!

It can get really overwhelming when you're deciding on what to eat at Reading Terminal Market. But, if you have to choose one place to have ice cream, you can't go wrong with Bassetts. Their butterscotch vanilla is deliciously creamy, rich, smooth, and flavorful. If butterscotch isn't your favorite, they also have a ton of other flavors. Their scoops are pretty big as a "kids" scoop is equivalent to a single scoop.

This is five star ice cream, what else do you need to know? It's rich, ultra creamy, and bursting with delicious flavor. And do they have a few flavors.

One of the best I ever tasted. I got a cup of Banana and Mocha Chip to eat while waiting in line for Tommy DiNic's. The BEST banana ice cream ever! Not too sweet or tart. The Mocha Chip was delicious and went well with the Banana.

I don't know what all the rage is about. Came to Philly for the weekend to visit a friend. We did some reviews and thought we had to visit bassetts. We were so disappointed!! We got the PB&J and macadamia nut. The mac nut was vanilla ice cream w nuts inside and the PB&J was was ok. There are much better places to get ice cream. Don't waste the calories!!

After going to reading terminal for the 10th time, I had to give in and try Bassett's Ice Cream. It was a nice day too, since it was getting humid in Philadelphia and I was craving something cold. Definitely hit the spot with the pistachio and green tea ice cream, which someone pointed out looks like play-doh. Would definitely come here again, but doesn't compare to other ice cream brands by much.

A lot of people suggest to tourists that, if they stop by the Reading Terminal Market, they HAVE to eat at Bassett's. I wil encourage this. Two days ago was my first visit to the market and it was awesome. I went in through the other end so it took me a while to find Bassett's, but when I did I got Cookies & Cream with a cone. First of all, I got more ice cream than I was expecting. That's a plus in my book. Two big ol' scoop-fulls. The ice cream was delicious & creamy. Something greatfully appreiated, especially at such a historic place. I only gave it 4 stars because I haven't had my full of flavors yet ^_^ Should have tried the green tea... And There's plently more I wanna try when I go back. Can't wait Oh, also they only accept cash, like most places in the city. So, make sure you have cash.

Saw this on Travel Channel's Ice Cream Paradise. Located inside the Reading Terminal Market. One of the oldest ice cream (or I think THE oldest) business in the US. Had a scoop of the Chocolate Marshmallow and it was just enough to satisfy my craving :) I can actually taste the natural ingredients they use and definitely sets apart from Dreyer's and all other commercialized brands. Now that I think about it, I shouldve gotten a 2 scoop...

This post is a few days late but on my last day in Philadelphia I grabbed some ice cream from Bassett's in the Reading Terminal Market. The location was nothing special, a counter and some stools just like most places in the market but the home made ice cream was awesome. I tried the Gadzooks, chocolate ice cream with peanut butter brownies and caramel swirl. This flavor was right up my alley with many favorite flavors. It was smooth and creamy but chewy and crunchy from the brownies and nuts. I could have eaten a gallon of the ice cream but a few scoops on a well made waffle cone was perfect. There is not much more to say about the ice cream, it was great! I would go back and try other flavors but the wonderful thing is that you can ship the ice cream anywhere in the country. Bassetts has partnered with the Page General Store at pageneralstore.com to ship a 6 pint case for $45. Fully worth it, I will be ordering some Gadzooks and a few others next month.

Old time Philadelphia Ice Cream with excellent taste and few frills. Try single scoop "junior size", not advertised, if watching calories and you decide to "cheat on your diet". Large selection of flavors and definitely beats major chains.

First visit to Phillay and it was awesome! Definitely have to go back and try other foods. This place was the place for ice cream! You can't go wrong!

First, the positives: Bassetts is historic and has lots of flavors made of very good ingredients. However, as I like dense ice cream (like Bi-Rite in SF), this didn't cut it. It was too airy and they give you such huge portions that the ice cream kept melting on my shoes. Sadly, Gadzooks Blanc will probably be the last flavor I'll try on my own. But if visitors are in town, I'll probably bring 'em here just so that they can experience Bassetts on their own.

Once you've walked through the Reading Terminal Market you have to stop for a treat at Bassett's. My favorite is the Raspberry Truffle -- creamy vanilla ice cream with raspberry coulis swirled in and chocolate pieces filled with more raspberry coulis...SO DELICIOUS!! come to think of it...it's really time for another visit...

  • T M.

Nah, think I'll save parking fare and buy Ben and Jerry's next time. First, this place is overrated and expensive. It's run like the local Wendy's, and they pass the ice cream down from person to person until it reaches you. I paid $4.75 for a double scoup of choc mint ice cream on waffle cone. The cone and scoops were so small even a baby wouldn't have been satiated with it. It's popular, in part, because Pres. Obama visited there and gave thumbs up. This stuff is too sweet and skimpy.

I've never had anything as rich and creamy as Bassett's ice cream. There are many other famous places for local ice cream. Bassett ranks second only to Fosselman's in Southern California. It is leaps and bounds more wonderful than anything I've found in Northern California. Recommending the dark chocolate chocolate chip highly! $3.50 for 2 scoops is not too shabby!

I finally expanded my Philly ice cream horizons from Capogiro to Bassett's. Bassett's is less expensive and has bigger portions, so if you don't exercise some self-control you might wind up feeling a little ill. I had the Raspberry Truffle (delicious although it needed more chunks in it) and the Cinnamon (which started out well, but it's a little intense - I can't eat that flavor in large quantities and continue to enjoy it). I'll be back to try some of their more creative flavors: WHYY and Gadzooks, for example!

Ice cream is terrific. Not really much more to say. Tasted fresh and creamy, and the flavors are great. I highly recommend the dark chocolate chip (which has irregularly sized chocolate chunks instead of the usual uniform hershey kisses that litter chocolate chip ice cream) as a spin for choco ice cream lovers. Quick service for ice cream (probably longer for shakes/etc)-estimated less than 1 minute from order to being served.

Loved whatever it was that I had...... Can't recall the name, but it had coffee flavored ice cream with other stuff in it. Happy ice cream lover!

Pretty decent ice cream. Reading Terminal is the bomb though. I don't remember what flavors we got - clearly fairly unmemorable ice cream, but you know, if you want ice cream and you can't make it somewhere else before you implode, Bassetts will do it.

  • Anson P.

The line here was long but it moved pretty quickly. For future reference: Order where it says "order here" and pick up your ice cream where it says "pick up here". I didn't have a problem with this, but a surprising amount of people did. I got one of my favorite flavors... mint chocolate chip...and it did not disappoint. The ice cream was pretty thick and yet still creamy. Good amount of chocolate chips in it. I like how they have 5-6 different cones to choose from. I'll have to give each of them a try if I'm ever back here. You know it's good ice cream when a little girl pushes you out of the way to go claim her cone. I thought to myself, "little girl you're going to pay...mmm....mint chocolate chip". Yes, I got distracted. She got lucky this time. Next time, there will be no mercy.

    (4)
  • Dallas T.

That was great! The ice cream was 5 stars. The waffle cone was 2-3. Why more places don't do a dark chocolate chocolate chip ice cream, I don't know, but it was fantastic.

One of the oldest Ice Cream companies in the country (1893) and certainly the first in Philly. They were in Philly well before the Reading Market and were the first vendor to set up shop there. Supposedly their ice cream is so good and creamy because their fat content is higher than anyone elses (you didn't think you were eating health food, did you?). The flavors are great and is worth a stop to this little historic spot in the Reading Terminal Market.

GREEN TEA ICE CREAM!!! I got so excited when I saw the sign. I tried a sample to make sure it wasn't the bitter kind some places serve, and it wasn't! Nice and creamy with a subtle green tea taste. You definitely can't eat this with another flavor; even the fruit ones will overpower the subtlety. My only gripe was that I asked for a kid's size and it was huge. Loved the ice cream but didn't want that much!

These guys are the oldest store in Reading Market and they have a huge variety of delectable goodies. I especially loved the chocolate soda, and my friend loved the sugar free ice cream. A must whenever in the area.

5/5 stars on the Wing Scale... - Quality of product: 3 of 3 stars - Quality of service: 1 of 1 star - General feelings of happiness: 1 of 1 star I came here with my sis and friends while in town for a 2-day business trip. On my first night, we had the Matcha green tea ice cream and I was instantly addicted! It tasted like some of the best Matcha tea I've had in Asia... but in ice cream form!! The taste was so distinct and so right on! Sis and I had to come back the following day; Sis and I split two giant scoops of Matcha before I headed off to the airport. The overall dessert experience was super positive. There were plenty of servers to provide prompt service. A bit pricey for ice cream but makes up for it with big portions. I also loved the Reading Terminal Market vibe; it was definitely busy but not stressful... just what I needed at the end of a tiring business trip. Back at home in San Francisco, I find myself craving Bassett's each time I got to an ice cream place!

Had the Butter Pecan Ice Cream, the pecans were large and fresh but the ice cream was nothing special. I've had better ice cream from the supermarket.

I followed DJ M.'s review - I started with pizza at By George - only one slice to save for Bassett's. Maybe it's the NY-er in me, but not only was I trying to save space in my stomach, but also save some $, for the colossal amount of ice cream I wanted. I was thrilled when they handed me a huge double scoop waffle cone for about $5 - They could have charged me $10 and I would not have been surprised. The WHYY Experience and Gadzooks were everything I read/dreamed about and more. Really rich without making me too thirsty (they provide water/cups on the counter). Lots of treats (pretzels, chocolate chunks, etc.) in the ice cream. I am looking forward to my next visit to Philly so I can try some more flavors and upgrade to a chocolate dipped waffle cone with sprinkles. Chocolate v. rainbow TBD.

Two words: MOOSE TRACKS! Bassett's ice cream was soooo creamy and good. Rich and and so tasty. I got a small cup of Moose tracks and the portion was huge! I could've eaten more but then I would have passed out from eating too much at Reading Terminal.

Very good ice cream - not withstanding the long lines that are par for the course at the RTM - my 4 y.o. dd loves Bassett's and as an occaisional special treat we get her a small cone.

  • Brad B.

really good, fairly priced. I had the gadzooks and peanut butter swirl. Good mix of creamy & sweet - not overwhelming. I'd gush about how great the location is -- but the entire Reading Terminal Market is pretty remarkable. Congrats to the family owners who have kept theirs hands on this business & have stayed true to the business' original vision. That being said - Graeter's (Cincinnati, OH) is still the gold standard.

Holy Cow! The Mecca of ice cream shops and what a way to end ribs for lunch. I got two scoops of mint chocolate and just walked around reading Terminal and took it all in, was an amazing ice cream experience and something I hope to do again and again next time I am in Philly.

Delicious ice cream and excellent flavor varieties. I especially enjoyed the Pistachio Ice Cream with the nice chocolate sprinkle cone. I am from Texas but will definitely make a stop here next time I am in Philadelphia again. My husband loved the WHYY Experience flavor. Yumm!!

If you're looking for frozen yogurt, Bassett's is just okay. Ben & Jerry's is definitely better. I've tried both the vanilla and the chocolate, and while the yogurt is creamy, it's not very flavorful. However, it's definitely fun to come to Bassett's, so I'm sure I'd eat their frozen yogurt again.

5 stars for their ice cream. It is very rich and creamy and they gave you a very generous portion. We had caramel vanilla and they are heaven! This is one of my favorite spots in Reading Terminal Market.

While I do enjoy ice cream from time to time, I wouldn't call myself a HUGE ice cream fan. With that said, Bassett's ice cream is pretty great. It's creamy and flavorful, definitely up there with the best ice cream I've personally had. I took my ice cream fanatic friend there to try it while she was visiting, and she absolutely loved it. Definitely worth a try.

I tried two flavors, the Guatemalan Ripple (coffee), and English Toffee. I was pretty disappointed. After reading all the great reviews, I can't help but wonder if I just picked the wrong flavors. The "Toffee" just tasted like plain vanilla with some barely-detectable candy mixed in, and the Guatemalan had a really strange rubbing alcohol aftertaste that my husband noticed as well. I would have expected these flavors in a generic brand of store-bought ice cream, but not a place that's famous for their product. Definitely not trying again.

Had two scoops of the moosetracks ice cream. It was pretty tasty. It's a good place to stop, eat some ice cream, make small talk with the guy sitting next to you at the counter and people watch. Best ice cream every? Nah, Bi-rite Creamery in San Francisco is still my fav. But Bassett's definitely doing something right if they're the oldest ice cream business in the US.

I love Bassetts. I think I stop by every time I'm at Reading Terminal. The Mint Chocolate Chip and Butter Pecan are two of my favorite flavors, but everything is good there. The ice cream is super creamy. Only drawback are the long lines, especially during the lunch hour.

Creamy ice cream heaven. Gadzooks was fabulous, if you like chocolate, peanut butter and caramel... and who doesn't?? Worth the wait. And, the prices are reasonable.

So. Good. Perfect softness, a little crunch. Lots of flavors, generous portions. It's really, really hard to go wrong with ice cream so there's not much more I can say other than try this place out if you're at the Market. I ordered a single scoop of butterscotch vanilla and it was heavenly.

NOM!! I adore ice cream and Bassett's is great. Creamy but not too creamy. Sweet but not too sweet. I tried the Raspberry Truffle, the Gazooks Blanc and the WHYY Experience. Raspberry Truffle was great, but i love anything with raspberry in it. I didn't ask for a description before ordering it and I was surprised to see it doesn't contain chocolate--it's vanilla with raspberry swirled through it. Maybe's it's white chocolate? Anyway, it was good. The Gadzooks Blanc was okay. I didn't get much peanut butter flavor from the pb brownies. The chocolate-covered pretzels in the WHYY Experience were great--sweet, salty, crunchy--awesome. I tried a bite of my friend's Peanut Butter Swirl: it was much less sweet than I'd expected and had a nice peanutty flavor. The staff was quick and friendly. Portions were large and prices were very reasonable. We sat at the marble topped counter to eat--great way to enjoy your ice cream while people watching in the market.

I was recently in Philadelphia and fell in love with Bassett's. I come from San Francisco and we take food very seriously - all I have to say is that it lived-up to all the hype. The ice cream is rich, tasty and amazing. For those who really know ice cream, you can tell the difference between good quality ice cream and cheap, wholesale ice cream - you can definitely tell that they use all-natural ingredients. Each scoop is rich with flavor...some must haves are the dark chocolate (yes!), dark chocolate chip, chocolate chip cookie dough and the very unique Gadzooks (chocolate with peanut butter brownies, chocolate chips and caramel). It's nice to know good, homemade quality can still be found.

I have to say that my tremendous, three-scoop order for only $4.25 was om-worthy and beyond my expectations. Ever since seeing the ice cream documentary on PBS, I made it a point to visit all of the spots; Bassett's is the closest I can get to within reason. Pumpkin was the seasonal special, so I absolutely had to get it. It tasted just like pumpkin pie, but was a little mild for my tastes. The gadzooks flavor, deep and chocolatey and brownie-filled beyond compare, ensconced me in its richness, enough so that I couldn't even finish it. Still, it was devilish and proved the perfect evil triplet to its fellow white ice cream scoops. My favorite was the WHYY experience. It's vanilla ice cream, with plenty of butterfat, swirled with butterscotch (delightful) and crispy chocolate-covered pretzel balls (even more perfect.) Service was friendly, portions generous, and the flavor list has a sense of humor that few ice cream parlors are confident enough to have. Bassett's doesn't go nuts with savory or exotic flavors, but rather finds what people take comfort in most...and then exploits it to the highest degree of tastiness. Next time I'm in Philly, you may indeed find me here again.

Yelpers don't lie. This place might even deserve 6 stars. It's great creamy ice cream with a variety of options to fit everyone's taste. Lines can get long if you go when tourists are usually visiting. Make it a point to have their ice cream and every other ice cream place just won't do it for you

    (5)
  • Michael O.

After seeing Bassett's on one of the PBS specials about best ice cream, we had to visit during our recent vacation. Wow, so tasty. I had the butter pecan and was just floored. Usually, you get little pieces of pecan sprinkled throughout the ice cream. But at Bassetts, they use the whole pecan. It's too bad that there are not more quality businesses like this around. Everyone just getting squeezed by the big national brands and in the end, everything just has a uniform bland taste like at McDonald's. Kudos to Bassett for maintaining high quality.

I don't give 5 star reviews. You can't give a 5 star review because you have to leave room to go up, and there's always gonna be something better, right? Not here. This is ice cream at its old fashioned best. Not that I would know because I was born a little after old fashioned times, but I can guess just by looking at people eating ice cream in grainy photos. And based on those photos, I am 100% sure this ice cream is just like what they were eating (uh, I think). It comes down to 2 things- fat content and flavorings, and Bassetts has them both nailed. For around 3 bucks you get a heavy chunk of frozen lead that explodes the tongue with perfect flavor and smoothness. I really can't describe it more aptly than that. You have to try it to appreciate it. Rumor has it that you will actually lose weight by eating it all the time too! Talk about a win-win. Bassetts is ice cream perfection, and a rare 5 star review from me. It is a must visit when downtown.

I was lucky enough to find this place in the market a while ago, and just had to say that their ice cream is some of the best I have ever had. I am not huge on sweets, but when I next want some ice cream it will be worth the visit. I highly recommend their ice cream.. try the GREEN TEA one!

I took my Mom to Reading Terminal and immediately she said "Where is that Ice Cream Place?!" I had no idea what she was talking about, but when we stumbled upon Bassett's she immediately got in line. I've never seen my Mom so excited about ice cream in her life (she was even willing to get 2 scoops 15 minutes BEFORE our dinner reservation at Alama de Cuba). So I figured I should try some too---yeaaaaaaa, it was THAT good. I got my 2 favs, cookie dough and pralines and creams. I really want to go right now actually

  • Elliot P.

Their ice cream is super premium very rich ice cream. It is cheaper then Ben and Jerry's and you get twice as much. They have many different flavors it is very hard to pick because they all sound good.

Perfect ice cream with wonderful flavors! Huge scoops..... And the price is right. Three of us shared a triple scoop cup for $6. We had one scoop each of Butter Pecan, Toffee Vanilla, and Madagascar Coffee. They were all absolutely wonderful!

When we asked to try a flavor, I was told that they don't give out samples to taste. It's because they are common flavors and we know what they taste like. If that's the case I don't understand why there are so many ice cream shops carrying same flavors and some do well and some don't. Guess Bassetts is not unique

  • Lanijah P.

Great ice cream, great service, but a little expensive to me. Husband and I got a cup with a scoop of cookie dough and a scoop of strawberry.

    (4)

  • Fiona C.

Possibly the best pumpkin ice cream I've ever had. It is a little on the sweet side though. Also had a scope of moosetrack ice cream which definitely hits the spot if you're craving a chocolate and pb combo.

    (5)

    (4)

  • Jake F.

Not only was the ice-cream delicious, but Chris was extremely patient with our indecision and helped guide us to the flavors we wanted. We will definitely be back!

  • Jen Y.

I have to say this might be the best ice cream I've ever had. Perfect texture, density and creaminess, not overly sweet, great robust favors and quality ingredients. Every flavor we tried was delicious! My favorite was the raspberry truffle. Even the mango was terrific. Cinnamon also great!

    (5)
  • Michael G.

    (5)

    (3)
  • Yiwen S.

delicious homemade ice cream. funky innovative flavors are a must try. a mandatory stop on a hot summer's day when passing through reading terminal. prices are comparable-- $4.50 for two scoops. a small price to pay for a happy stomach. and service with a smile.

  • Sarah S.

  • Cristina P.

Beat icecream I've ever tasted. Very creamy and definitely worth it. Paid about 5.50 for a scoop of mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone.

  • Amanda G.

Sorry!

  • Joshua C.

I got the Vanilla Cherry two scoops. One of the best if not THE best ice cream I've ever had. Not much else to say

    (5)

    (4)
  • Soly Z.

Ordered single scoops of the mango and moose track ice cream and they were both good, but I still don't get the hype. Nothing unusually delicious or special, but we did enjoy our ice cream. They accept all credit cards, including Amex, which is a plus.

  • Shaji K.

  • Alex S.

Ice cream? Yes please! A ton of flavors here! Strawberry had lots of strawberries mixed in and the chocolate was delicious. Staff is super efficient and made the long line go by quickly. Try it!

The long line is worth the wait. Simply the best ice cream in the area (and by area I mean North America).

I'm glad I had the chance to try Bassetts.

yes. Great ice cream. Incidentally, Bassett's is America's first commercial ice cream maker and really has stood the test of time. I've tried their coffee and praline flavors and could really go for a cone--or pint, right now...

Must try!

Sorry brah.

  • Nataly N.

Lots of flavors, great tasting ice cream, as the Yelp stars say - as good as it gets! Lines can get long, touristy, but the locals come often, too. They take LevelUp!

One of the oldest ice cream joints situated in Reading Terminal Market! Very good ice cream! I tried their popular gadzooks flavor, strawberry and their vanilla. Amazing!! Need I say more? Now go out and get Type 2 diabetes.

    (5)

    (4)
  • Tina P.

OK enough ice cream. Nice little treat to have inside the Reading Terminal Market. I had the English toffee ice cream which is basically vanilla ice cream with Heath bar pieces. Very creamy, exactly what I would expect. However, their sugar cone left some to be desired.

  • Danan R.

The ice cream here is deliciously creamy. If you like chocolate, I dare you to try the gadzooks flavor although moose tracks does come in at a close second. Pistachio is also very good, as is the Whyy. Actually I have yet to dislike a flavor...

  • Jeff C.

    (4)

  • Caroline V.

  • Lawrence C.

    (5)
  • Vikash S.

Pretty decent ice cream. Reading Terminal is the bomb though. I don't remember what flavors we got - clearly fairly unmemorable ice cream, but you know, if you want ice cream and you can't make it somewhere else before you implode, Bassetts will do it.

Very good ice cream - not withstanding the long lines that are par for the course at the RTM - my 4 y.o. dd loves Bassett's and as an occaisional special treat we get her a small cone.

really good, fairly priced.

    (4)
  • Samantha E.

I'm a sucker for good ice cream, so to me, the price was very reasonable. I get the kids cone, which I don't believe is listed, but it is plenty for me. My favorite flavor (so far) has been the green tea ice cream. The servers are always helpful in giving suggestions and helping people decide on the size they want. Pro Tip: Go during the week to avoid that massive line that occurs on summer weekends.

  • Noelle H.

The ice cream is so creamy and dense!! If you're planning to stop here for dessert after you have lunch, save some room! I had the moose tracks and banana on a cone, which was the perfect mix. The scoops are huge!! A must if you're in Reading Terminal!

  • Ann P.

  • Gary L.

  • Jane P.

  • Abelle N.

  • Maria C.

3.5 stars.

I love Bassetts ice cream! I always go for chocolate. It's very creamy and the chocolate flavor is really strong (and not too sweet or too fake). Green tea is also good. The best ice cream in philly.
