my family founded this hot texas chili dog weiner joint in 1927. the hot texas weiner and the use of hot chili sause hot chopped onions, and the slicing of the dogs in half & putting them on a fat long bun, slathering them in chili sauce, onions, hot mustard, and other stuff, is so famous it is actually in wikipedia. "The Texas hot dog, Texas chili dog, Texas hot, or Texas wiener is a hot dog with chili or hot sauce; it is served in various regions of the United States in variations with assorted condiments. The Texas wiener was created in Paterson, New Jersey before 1920...and in Altoona, Pennsylvania by Peter "George" Koufougeorgas in 1918....and originally called Texas Hot Wieners. The "Texas" reference is to the chili sauce used on the dogs, which actually has a stronger Greek cuisine influence due to the ethnicity of the cooks who invented it. It is considered a unique regional hot dog style. A was Andreas, Paul was my Uncle Paul Vasiliades & J was my grandpa John Halkedis. The store passed to two more of my uncles & i worked in it when i was 11 or 12. there was nothing as great as two texas hot weiners and a dr brown's original cream soda. i mainly cleaned the floors & the toilets, and it was great. Then it passed to our friends the Pappas' who had it a long time. The cops and lawyers would come in all the time, the CJC came and so did the comvention center. Now there's new ownership but the song remains the same. these are my peeps. my past my present my future. Philly, baby.

I was in the neighborhood for business today, so I finally got to try. I parked a few blocks away in a garage (Cause you can't park near this place for free) The place is a luncheonette with a counter and some tables in the rear. It's seen better days. CASH ONLY. I ordered what I came for, 2 Texas Weiners, all the way. Split and griddled dogs served on mini sandwich buns, similar to Texas Wieners in South Philly but spicier chili sauce, the way i like it. A way nicer staff than Texas Weiners as well. If you're on foot and crave a cheap tasty lunch, stop in. They'll treat you well.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIOIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII As depicted above, this place is a hole in the wall breakfast and lunch restaurant that is family owned. When you enter, you will notice a row of bar-type counter seating. Further down, there are late tables where groups can sit. I loved the charm. I ordered a few Texas Wiener dogs with cheese - here are my thoughts. I like the way they cooked the wiener by splitting them and grilling them. Taking this approach is a great way to enjoy a hot dog, but I like my franks more charred when cooking with this method. The chili was good and had a little spice to it - thumbs up. I didn't like the bread though. While the bread was soft, I felt like there was too much bread which takes away from the inside of the dog. The cheese is sliced cheese - not grated, not squirted, etc. The cheese coupled with the bread made it seem more like a sandwich than a hot dog. In any case, the staff was VERY friendly and the place was clean. Because of the location, lots of law enforcement were dining here so it feels safer than other locations. Minus one star for not taking credit/debit cards. Even food trucks accept them these days...

I just found this place via Yelp actually. Otherwise its a small business hidden on a side street. I've only eaten here once and it was take out, but the food was so good I am inclined to give a review already. If latter visits disappoint, I will adjust my review. Their featured product- the Texas Weiner- is one of the best hot dogs I've ever had. The chili sauce is going to make you want a 2nd and 3rd. I also grabbed a burger, which was very good itself. You can also get breakfast at any time. I saw others eating it, and their plates full of eggs, bacon, and scrapple definitely made me put it on my to do list. Tasty and very inexpensive food gets 5 stars from me.

Dogs were OK here...I wasn't blown away like I was hoping. They could use a little more Lestoil in the wash bucket at night. I only had two dogs and a Coke....but would go back for breakfast.

Great Hotdogs! But stay with there namesake. Breakfast sandwiches were greasy and overpriced for the small portion, Cheesesteak was the worst I've had in Philly. Staff is warm and friendly and service is quick.

I went A.P.J's to taste their namesake.. the texas wiener. They are split grilled, served with onions, mustard and chili on a club roll rather than a hot dog bun. I would have preferred my hot dog done a little bit more. The chili had nice heat but little flavor. Definitely worth going to. A neighborhood gem that is a throw back to the old lunch counter.

This is hands down one of the best places to get diner food in the city. The hot dogs are great and I usually get one with ketchup/mustard/onions and a chilidog with onions. I guess when the name of the store is called Texas Wieners, it must be good. The food is cheap and the service is pretty fast. Aside from the hotdogs, one of my favs is the turkey club. The turkey club they sell here uses real turkey and not that processed oscar meyer pre-sliced junk that some other places sell. Another thing that's a must try is the "Toasted Corn Muffin" it is to die for. Make sure its Toasted! and you won't be disappointed.

I was in Philadelphia for a conference and I heard someone recommend this place, so we gave it a try for breakfast. You'd be surprised at the number of places in Philly that don't open until 8 or 9 - which is a problem when you want breakfast before the conference starts at 8. The appearance is certainly humble - but don't let that deceive you. The staff is top notch. When we went in the second day, our waitress remembered what we'd had the previous day and asked if we'd like that again. I was impressed. The food is outstanding, the staff is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. It is cash only - so be aware of that before you go in. I recommend the spicy beef sausage with your breakfast. It was exceptionally good. Next time I'm back in Philly, I'll be going for breakfast and try them out for lunch, too.

This place is a gem! It still has the look and feel of a something out of a time machine, and not the manufactured "nifty fifties" nonsense. Stools at the counter top,old school menu board, I love everything about it! 2 Dogs with Chili, mustard and onions with grilled cornbread on the side. You will be hard pressed to find a better hot dog in the city!

I love this place. It's a standard no-frills grill, the kind of place that's nostalgic without trying to be. It's just never changed. The food is good and cheap. The staff is really friendly. You might even strike up an interesting conversation with one of the regulars if you sit at the counter. I only wish it was open later and on the weekends, but with all the business they get from the courthouse, I'm sure they do just fine.

Central Philly doesn't have enough good greasy spoons. APJ is one of the few, though. Everything on the menu is decent and cheap. The staff is great. I wish I liked the fries or onion rings more. Still, I like going here for a simple burger or sandwich.

Sometimes you go to a little hole in the wall nobody would ever notice and find a hidden jewel. Score! I've been here three times and had a lot of fun every time. The food is not outstanding but there is nothing wrong with it, and it is fun to eat here. The hot dog is good; it comes with onions and their special sauce. I had two. They use real roasted turkey in their turkey sandwich, not pressed turkey. Coffee is good. Prices are also good. Service is excellent. One of the cooks is Chinese, and the menu includes a Chinese item that changes daily, which I am looking forward to trying.

Very good Texas Wieners, very cheap prices and you kind of get that local feel when you walk in they usually remember your order if you go in there enough. But they do give you big portions for cheap prices. my only complaints for the place no open late enough and not open on the weekends!

I love texas wieners. I'm lucky to come from a place famous for them. So you can imagine my glee upon discovering a texas wiener joint near my apartment in Philly. It was a happy, if fleeting, moment. The place looks greasy and grimy -- just the way it should be. The waitstaff was all pleasant and friendly enough -- a nice addition to my experience. Sadly, the food was a bit lacking as per my texas wiener taste. I thought the sauce was a bit bland. Also, I asked for gravy fries, and I had to explain what I meant. No big deal, really. I don't believe it was on the menu after all. The girl refilled my soda for me. I feel bad rating this place only 3-stars as it's an honest and down to earth place, but I honestly wasn't that blown away and haven't been back since. Perhaps I should give it another shot.

The best hot dogs I've found in Philly. The owners and staff are really friendly. I love the location. They make a lot of specials and everything is made-to-order. Great place to grab lunch alone and read the paper.

This place had a makeover over the 2014 Christmas holidays. Looks great. The owners could not be sweeter and the ladies working there are as well. I want to love this place. It is 100 yrds out my front door. And I love a greasy spin diner. BUT these guys skimp big time on the quality of ingredients. The signature hot dog is such poor quality. Not sure what is stuffed in the tub. And I love NYC dirty water dogs! So I am not looking for a Wagu tube steak. And so it goes from there. Worth trying just for the ambience and friendliness. Not open on Saturday or Sunday.

This place is a little hole-in-the-wall diner with amazing food! It's kinda grimy and the characters can get a little feisty, but food is unbeatable. I love the breakfasts, and watching the regular locals stumble in and exchange banter with the cook and waitresses. I think the owner or manager is this little Asian woman who seems to keep the employees in line. Some may be scared off by a place like this, but I think this place is like a remnant of the old time diners of the north east and the locals all know what a treasure that is. Great breakfast and great selection on the menu.

This place belongs in a Tom Waits song. I'm very surprised to be the first Yelp for it. What a kooky location. Near the Criminal Justice Center and flanked by a bail-bonds company and a check-cashing place; lurking nearby are massage parlours; strip bars. Hilarious! So you know who eats here don't you? At these rock-bottom prices? Clerks; cops; paralegals; stenos; C.O.'s; bailiffs; cons; strippers; pimps; reporters; witnesses; informants; suspects; lawyers; public defense attorneys.. the whole long fool's parade of characters who churn through the choppy waters of Philadelphia's courts. Real slice of life. (Watch guys who have trouble sitting down while they eat; you know where they just came from, ha) Anyway the grub here is dirt cheap but much tastier. Though they have other menu items on their diner menu; its really all about hot dogs. Hot dogs with onions; hot dogs with chili; hot dogs with sauerkraut; hot dogs with fried egg. And all the best greasy, fried, peppery, salty trimmings you could possibly ask for. A high volume operation. Stood the test of time. Been in this spot for ages. Great block, overall. Everything on this stretch of notorious 13th St seems dusty; faded; worn...resistant to progress and reform represented by the ghastly convention center which dwarfs everything. Holding out against the bland chrome striping; the cutesy accent-lighting; the brick applique' facades and smoked turquoise leaded glass inserts which have made this part of town so dismal and anonymous. This block has stayed just the way it oughta be. TOTALLY genuine, quintessential Philly. A must-visit. This is the real deal.
