A Norristown gem...The Tortas are amazing. Stopped on a whim and did not disappoint. Highly recommended.

Authentic Mexican food outside the dangerous part of Norristown (leave your knives at home). This place is in walking distance of my home. I rarely go there but if they are making fresh corn on the cob outside you must stop! It's like stepping into Mexico. Their signature dish that shares the name sake is a tasty treat.

I'd been looking forward to trying out La Chancla for months after several of my spanish speaking amigos had told me about their gigantic tortas and delicioso food. I finally made it in after driving by it two days in a row; the restaurant is in the middle of a residential area and, to me, looks just like a house from the outside! Well, regardless, I made it inside and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is mostly nondescript, with the exception of two cute tables outside for dining al fresco. Everything looked clean and nice though. There was one server inside and she was super nice about letting me practice mi espanol while ordering and paying for my burrito al pastor that I had been craving for days. I was ravenous and didn't take a hard look at the menu to see their other offerings, but I've heard they have these huge sandwiches that feed a family and they were in the 12 dollar range. My burrito was really great, and gigantic as well. The meat was really flavorful, and it was the first time in my limited al pastor experience that I could really see and taste the pineapple. Mine looked pretty much exactly like the one in Tom D.'s picture. I am pretty happy that I decided to go in, and I'm looking forward to trying out the rest of their menu. I'm sure it won't replace my favorites in the city, but it's so nice to have options like this close to home!

This place is great! Large portions at inexpensive prices. The service is friendly. The menu offers plenty of good choices. The dining area is casual and outside seating is available. They also have off street parking. This is one of my favorite places to eat.

Absolutely delicious, authentic Mexican food. Huge portions at great prices. I had the chicken enchilada with green sauce. It was spicy but SO good! Looked and tasted very fresh. Its in a nicer part of Norristown and has a cute outdoor seating area. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is comfortable. They don't serve alcohol but it's worth the visit just for the food! Excellent!

La Chancla is a traditional Taquería that specializes in tortas (sandwiches). I really want to like this place. I can walk to it from my place. But, I've had several things on the menu and I'm just not a fan. The owner is really nice, and the service is fast. I've gone through all the standards (tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadilla) and it's all bland to me. Admittedly, I haven't had a tortas because I'm not truly a sandwich guy, but I'd expect you to hit the staples right first. There's a million Mexican places in Norristown. I guess I'm still on the hunt

Highly recommend the steak torta and don't forget the sauces! Food was a bit costly, but considering the portions and authenticity of a Mexican cuisine was worth it.

Everything is very good. Massive everything. Quesadillas are literally like a foot long! Tortas are huge too. Prices may seem quite high ( $13.00 that time I went for 1 'torta de milanesa', usually $6-$7 other places) but when I received my food it was BIG! Go try it out!

I don't have a ton of experience with Mexican food so you will have to take my review with a grain of salt. That being said, I dig this little restaurant. It's in a neighborhood part of town, which makes it feel homey, as does the laid back atmosphere inside. A few tables, some Telemundo on the tv, most of the signs indecipherable to me since I don't speak Spanish. (The last time I was there I boldy grabbed my own menu instead of making the waitress get up to do so since I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable there. She kindly got up anyway and exchanged the Spanish menu I had grabbed for the English one I needed) Food I've had there: Tacos: had the pork w/ sauce which I think had pineapple on it. Awesome. Also tried the ground beef, though I asked for lettuce and cheese instead of the tomatoes and onions it normally comes with*. Also very awesome. *They have always been very patient with me making modifications to my order, even the staff whose English isn't totally fluent. Enchiladas: a little different than the cheese and sourcream covered thing you get at Chile's, this is definitely tasty and SPICY. The green sauce is spicy, but the red sauce is like fire! Not necessarily bad, but be prepared. And I LIKE spicy food, but man, that was intense. I think what you get at 13 dollars it is a little overpriced (too much rice and beans and tortilla, not quite enough chicken, for the price anyway), but it's good, no doubt. Torta Cubano: Ok, so I had this a year or two ago, so my memory isn't perfect. I do remember a few things though. It. Was. HUGE. I mean, the thing is made on a LOAF of bread. A whole loaf. And that is just the outside. It is filled with several different meats, egg, cheese, avocado, beans, every vegetable you would expect at a Mexican place... of course, me being me asked to have some of those things held off and STILL the thing was massive. My husband and I split it for like four days. It was messy and delicious and didn't leave us feeling so hot when we were done, but I think it was worth it if for nothing else than the novelty of such a crazy sandwich. Quesadilla: not bad. Not the best I've ever had, but when I want something simple I like it. I've only had the chicken, so maybe next time I will try it with beef to get some more flavor. All in all, I'm growing quite fond of this little spot. It's cash only, so don't forget that when you go. But the tacos are only two bucks each and they are easily my favorite thing on the menu anyway. Go, enjoy, and report back on your torta experience.

I don't think I was as impressed with some of the other reviews in here. It's a small place not quite of the 'hole-in-the-wall' nature. Off-street parking is available. The menu is simple and traditional... so if you're looking for the texmex, don't come here. Everything about it was average for this type of Mexican restaurant in Norristown. The food wasn't bad, but I've had better. I would go back.

La Chancla is the real deal Mexican joint. It's tucked away a bit northwest of Norristown but definitely worth it. The name translates to "flip flops" To start they give you chips and a spicy salsa verde that has some avocado chunks in it - delicious. La Chancla is known for a few items: - Chancla - this is their house special "huarache" which is a fluffy tortilla topped with beans, meat, cheese, onions, lettuce, etc. This is a must try - for meat, I like it with carne asada or tinga de pollo. - tortas - the tortas (mexican sandwich) here are giant size. Try it with milanesa or al pastor. Grab some horchata to wash it all down and cool off your mouth. Cash only.

Legit Mexican place. I was the only white person there amongst 6 mexican dudes who were watching MTV Tres with Corridos playing. The server/hostess's English isn't the best, but the food is solid. They don't have paper menus or I would have uploaded one. Someone could take a pic of the menu if they sat down to eat. Menu: Tacos: Carnitas, Al Pastor, Chicken, Cebolla, ... Gorditas: " Tortas: " Chancla: Signature dish, like an oblong breadish, thick tortilla with your choice of meat, queso fresco and onions/cilantro Burritos: Al Pastor, Asada, ... Enchiladas: with either green or red sauce There's other menu items, but you get the idea. If you've ever eaten real Mexican food from a cart in New York or someplace similar, it's like that. Drinks: Jarritos, Coca-Cola (made with sugar instead of HFCS) and regular Coca-Cola as well, Fanta, etc. etc.

I was very fortunate to have a co-worker bring two of us 4 of the most beautiful soft tacos (beef) & it was soooo worth it. I hadn't planned in eating tacos, namely cuz i forgot that he was bringing them in. Very very good. worth a trip if i happen to be around the Norristown area.. first impressions, so want more!!!

Since moving to the area about 6 months ago I've been on a search for a good local Mexican restaurant. I've tried the other places listed on yelp and a few others that weren't listed but this is my new favorite. I got the al pastore burrito - of note b/c many 'authentic' Mexican places don't have burritos. Mine was wonderful, full of meat, rice, frijoles, LTO and avocado as well as a generous helping of queso fresco. I got mine to go and it was delicious. It came with fries and some fresh house salsa. They do have a menu in english, but fare is typical of any authentic mexican establishment. they have on the menu tacos, as for the atmosphere - it is pretty small, but nice and comfortable. they have a few tables with chairs out front on the porch. As they don't accept credit cards you will need to take cash. I only had $8 on me, but that was enough for my delicious burrito. They also have a cooler full of soda and fruit nectars etc. They also have mexican coke (made with cane sugar, in a glass bottle). Try it if you've never had it before - it's much better than regular coke.

Had a great Lunch here today! I have been disappointed by some of the Mexican lately but this place hit the mark! Be aware they only take cash. I had the Pork Tacos and Beans and Rice and Two tables next to me had Platters. The Steak, Braised Chicken, The house Dish A "sandal" with chicken and a nice looking Burrito. The place was nice and clean and the owner was very nice. Well worth a try!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
