I'm not from the Media/Springfield area but we stayed at a hotel across the street from the mall and this place came up when looking for dinner options. The place has outside seating and a decently sized interior dining area and we were afraid at the amount of cars parked in the lot that we would have a hard time getting a seat on a Saturday evening but other than some outside diners, there was hardly anyone inside. We sat at the bar and ordered a drink while looking over our menus. I will say that while I had some complaints, our bartender was very nice and attentive the whole time. I decided to order a bacon bleu burger while my boyfriend ordered a turkey burger with avocado on it (or something similar). Now, we waited... and waited... and waited..... Our bartender kept on checking for us but we were there almost an hour before getting our food. He apologized every single time and it obviously wasn't his fault, but it was annoying to say the least. I was hoping that my wait wouldn't have been in vain, but unfortunately my burger wasn't that good. I thought it advertised bacon but there was none on the burger. Just bleu cheese. I didn't notice until I had almost finished otherwise I would have said something. We were hungry but I didn't finish my meal and neither did my boyfriend. I was annoyed we were not offered some type of discount on the burger or at least a free appetizer. Oh well. On the plus side, the fruit loops cocktail the bartender made was really tasty!

Riddle Ale House is down the street from me - I'd like to have a dollar for every time I've driven past the place. Don't really go in there much though. Stopped in for a quick lunch a few years ago and had a decent BLT but after reading some of these reviews, I don't think I will be eating there again. However, I would certainly go for drinks. Met a bunch of friends there last weekend (about 25) and had a great time. The service was great and the beer was even better. LOL.

Place has gone down hill what a shame. Maybe they are tired. Staff is not trained. Sell it to the mall. Rude waitress. Always out of basic food, like cole slaw and gravy for the roast beef. Was a good place 10 years ago.

I didn't come here because of the three star reviews on Yelp. I came here because I'd driven by it a thousand times and it was time. So today I was a first-timer and now I'll likely be a last-timer. I doubt I'll be here again. The parking sure is easy. This place is surrounded on three sides by the mall parking lot. By the way, most area folks believe that this mall is on death's door. It's kind of sad. I strolled in around two thirty this afternoon and sat at the giant bar. This place is a little run down but not drastically so. The bartender was a little run down but not drastically so also. There were a few taps but nothing special. They have a TouchTunes juke box which I love because I can play songs directly from my smart phone app. I perused the menu and it was clear that their signature sandwich was roast beef. When I'm in a new place I always try to order a signature dish so I placed the order for $8 and change. I was given a choice of cheeses and one was cheddar-horseradish. This turned out to be a smart move. My sandwich arrived quickly but the plate was distinctly unimpressive. The sandwich was small and there was a miserly amount of fries. You know how it feels when you get the bottom of a basket of fries? You get all those little short pieces that are mostly overcooked. That's what I got. Meh. The sandwich itself was warm and juicy but the roast beef was a little tough. The cheese was delicious and the star of the show. I can't say the sandwich was bad but the overall meal was completely forgettable. So my meal, such as it was, was a reasonable price if it was good. Unfortunately it was forgettable. I barely remembered it long enough to write this review. The atmosphere was forgettable. The bartender was forgettable. I'm going to give them two stars and then forget to come here again.

I decided to eat at this establishment last night as it was convenient due to the fact that the Ruby Tuesdays at the mall was closed. I was served by a young gentleman that was training a new waitress. My experience with staff was great. However the food was mediocre at best. I ordered the chicken parm with spaghetti. The pasta was overcooked and the sauce was watery. It was neither the best nor the worst meal I have ever had. The crowd was predominantly 40-65 year olds. It was pretty busy at the time, but most people were there to drink with friends. I wasn't impressed. I would suggest you seek out other options.

Stopped in for dinner because of a traffic jam, an accident on 352 at Rt 1 as I drove home from work. We opted for sitting outside since it was a nice 70* early evening. We both ordered the snapper soup and wow! It tasted old!! I couldn't eat it after about five or six bites. The burger was not much better! We waited about 25 minutes for it to arrive, and it was room temperature with equally lukewarm fries. Why do most restaurants now serve these French fries coated in the crispy batter? I lathe them!! Their outside patio is actually pretty decent. However, they insisted on playing some sort of heavy underground dance music loudly! The crowd was average 40's to 50's! And, either the bass in the speaker was shot OR the music wasn't tuned in, very annoying!!! Definitely wouldn't waste my money here again!

Although I'm married to a Delco guy, we rarely spend much time in this area. So it's really strange that I've actually been to the Riddle Ale House twice. Yes, twice. The first time, we stopped in for a drink and some apps between a wedding ceremony and reception. We had slim pickings in the area for a place to grab a drink, so this wasn't really the type of place we would normally stop at. But our drinks/food were good and not too expensive, so no complaints there. And they have a self-serve popcorn machine, which is fun. I am easily impressed. The second time, we stopped in for a late lunch when we were in the area. I was actually pretty impressed by the "deluxe" BLT (the deluxe meant avocado was added). It was a bit on the pricier side ($9) for a smallish sandwich in a restaurant in the parking lot of a terrible mall. But the bacon was nice and crispy, the avo and the tomato were both perfectly ripe, and I really liked the "basil" mayo. I liked that it came with just a small handful of fries- no one needs a 1000 calorie mountain of fries. My husband had the wings and said they were good... but can you really mess up wings? Overall, this place has the unfortunate luck of being near a dying mall (sorry, Granite Run) and is in need of some updating. This isn't a place that I would necessarily go out of my way for. But if you are in the area and need a quick bite to eat or a quick drink, I think it is definitely sufficient.

I've been to the bar a few times for karaoke and just Friday night relaxing. The drinks are great; they have a martini special every week (it makes me feel young!). Definitely not a dive or a cheap bar. Expect to spend a little, but it's worth it. I ate in the restaurant portion once and my burger was huge and delicious. My only complaints would be due to the bands they host often, who always seem to be way too loud! It's nearly impossible to think, let alone have a conversation, and the sets are very long. They have a nice patio as a refuge, but it would be nice to not have to worry about when I'll regain my hearing. Tl;dr: check the Facebook page to see if anyone is playing and then head over for good drinks and company.

Ohhhh myyy, what a hot mess!!! The best thing about the meal experience was our server "kev" smiled through the entire super bad experience. There were 8 of us and no lie. .every one of us had a problem with our food! It was just awful! Lots of bad sauces to hide poorly prepared vegetables and meats. It took so much time to get bread ...which was cold and though btw....we thought they harvested the damn wheat themselves! We had to consistently ask for the dirty dishes to be removed from the table and getting a glass of water meant someone had to go to the well ...pump it and filter it themselves that's how long it took. Save your money, enjoy the bar drinks and the band but leave the dinner for a more fitting location.

My husband and I visited this restaurant based on the fact that my parents eat here every so often, and I've never heard anyone complain about it. We were visiting a friend at a nearby hospital and happened to be extremely hungry, so we were sort of a captive audience. The food was average quality, what you might expect from a diner or a retirement community dining hall. My husband ordered the Prime Rib from the Specials menu, which allegedly came with sauteed onions and peppers. What came on his plate was a thin beef stew. Not $20 worth of food. The appetizers were also average to slightly below average. My husband's shrimp cocktail was still frozen. My fried mushrooms and zucchini were bland and more breading than vegetable. My salad was good, but $8 for a plate of lettuce, feta, dried cranberries and nuts is a little much. Our service was really strange. We had to ask our server for silverware and napkins after our appetizers were served, we had to ask him to take our order, we had to ask for water; he just didn't seem to anticipate the things that we might naturally want as part of our dining experience. he was reasonably friendly, but it was as if we'd intruded. It seems like the best thing you can say about this place is "it's not horrible." It's sad that a restaurant in a location almost guaranteed a constant crowd of hungry people (near a mall, a highway, a retirement community and a hospital) can't be more imaginative and try to have fresher food at prices that better match the quality of the food.

I don't know much about any of the other food they serve... but the ROAST BEEF SANDWICH OH MY GOD. It's the only thing I go there for and the sandwich itself if worth all 4 stars.... Plus sitting out on the patio is fun.

Wish I could give it zero stars. Food is so bad, service is equally bad and OLD! Kids meals are $9.99 and don't include a drink! Doesn't matter because i will NEVER go back.

This place is basically in the mall parking lot. Its getting run down and if you want the ambiance of looking out at route 1 and the mall parking lot go here. Many other places in the area that are much better with better views and better food. The ambiance check list on Yelp is asking what to categorize this place as.. There is nothing that says Mall parking lot.

We ate at this place before heading to Longwood Gardens. It was pretty decent and no complaints from us. It's your typical steakhouse and food was pretty good. I don't know why people online have so much negative comments on this restaurant. Maybe it has changed over the past 2-3 years since we visited the place.

An Ale House Riddle: How many people does it take to serve you a glass of ice water? If you are dining here, the answer is three. One, a young inexperienced waiter, two a lazy bartender who says he's too busy to get you one, and three, an experienced waitress who can save the day. By the way, the bartender told me the ice water task was too much for him after waiting 30 minutes at the table, then 5 minutes at the bar after he told me I'd have to wait. It is a shame for any dining establishment - that has pretty decent food like this one - that loses customers, like us, because the service is just so bad. No one that even resembled a manager was in site. Just a work staff that seemed to be lead by several very young hostesses.

Great roast beef sandwiches, hand carved with sharp provolone and just enough horseradish. The staff is always attentive and friendly plus they have a nice beer selection that they have expanded recently.

  • Jerry C.

Ok, read all the priors and understand the complaints, but people come on... this is a bar across the street from a hospital. Heck my dad threw one or two back here waiting for me to be born. Their roast beef sandwiches are what you go there for and if that's what you know up front, you won't be disappointed. As someone said earlier these are the best thing on a roll and they are correct. For folks looking for a comparison I would look back to the old sproul or springfield ale house. These sandwiches are the quintessential mark of all that is good about beef and beer. The renovations are nice and the place does have a new feel, but the one constant is the beef, and that's what will bring you back in.

I booked a class reunion party with The Riddle Ale House. I found the MGR. and his employees to be top notch! Our reunion was well attended and enjoyed by all. We found the menu and food to be of great quality. The atmosphere supplied by the Riddle as well as the management made for a perfect night out. We will be booking again in 2013.

What a quality restaurant and atmosphere. Every night there is an event, from live bands, to quizzo, to Karaoke. Happy hour is awesome and bar area is constantly filled with regular patrons, and those enjoying a few drinks. The staff seem to be in one big family and everyone gets along with one another. I'd definitely recommend the roast beef sandwich. One of, if not the best roast beef in Delaware County. 5/5 stars for good food and friendly service!

I've always wondered how this place stays in buisness. Regretably, i tried it again yesterday. In short, waiter had been drinking, clams were rubbery and flavorless, my wife's "flounder" was cooked to mush and reeked of garbage. The fried veggies came out of the freezer. To go on would be mean, but i'm speaking for 10 people who won't be back. They really need to decide what kind of place to be. It could even be a decent dive bar with a small quality menu.

We have been here several times and all party members have really enjoyed their meals. The broiled seafood platter is a deal at 24.00 and includes a small lobster tail and crab legs not to mention the other goodies. Upon our first visit we ordered the muscle app. and got a huge plate. Would have been enough for a meal with a side salad. On our last visit we caught a bit of karaoke and it was a hoot.

I ate here for the first time last Saturday, and it will definitely be the last. We arrived at 4:30 and the place was pretty much empty. Our server came by promptly and took our order. I ordered the chicken parmigiana sandwich with onion rings. My girlfriend tried the roast beef sandwich with fries. We waited 25 minutes for them to arrive. I actually had to confirm this and did by checking a text I sent when I first sat down. In 5 more minutes we were leaving. When the food arrived I noticed my sandwich was steaming. I took the roll off and noticed it was somewhat soggy. From watch countless episodes of Kitchen Nightmares, it was obvious this was placed in the microwave. The chicken was horribly dry. The onion rings were also soggy and bland. There was no crisp to them at all. These also were obviously frozen. I choked down about half of the sandwich as I was starving. My girlfriends roast beef was somewhat better, but also dry. The only positive was that the bill was cheap. As a few other reviews stated, how is this place still open and in business? The food was horrible and the décor matched. The booths were worn, and the bathroom was very dingy, and in desperate need of some remodeling. There are way too many other places in the area. Save yourself the disappointment and grab a burger from the Ruby Tuesdays next door in the mall.

First time eating at this bar and the customer service was great! The buffalo wings were okay but the pastas were horrible. You can tell that the food was frozen and taste like it was cooked in a microwave. I feel as though this restaurant will fail if they don't change there ways in the kitchen.

It's called the "Riddle Ale House" for a reason. After eating there, it's no mystery as to why. The riddle is: "How is it still open for business?" I got something rather simple. Chicken fingers, twice baked potato and some potato soup. I'm pretty sure the 'soup' was just some warm tap water with the smallest potato pieces they could find and toss in it. The twice baked potato was garbage. Clearly it was instant potato mash. It was thick, it was heavy, and it was pureed mush. Little flavor and lots to be desired. The chicken fingers were ok. Though it became apparent to me that everything I had in front of me was just crap that got over processed and frozen at some factory that makes everything for dirt cheap, and it shows. Last time I went, my wife got a salad with bad dressing and was sick all night long. My friend talked me into going back almost a year later and this is what I got. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I'm not getting fooled by these guys again. EVER! I'm actually really mad that my friend wouldn't let me argue the poor food and he actually paid for all of it. What a waste. Don't go.

My dad used to take me here as a treat way back in the 70's. I have fond memories of hot tasty juicy roast beef sandwiches and ice cold rootbeer in thick heavy mugs. So much for fond reminiscences. Having been back here several times in the past few years have to say how disappointing the place is now. Once again I took a leap of faith and ordered the signature roast beef. This is their flagship sandwich and for 11$ it damn well better be good. No such luck. What came out of the kitchen was an unappealing insult. Imagine if you will that a 700 pound ourangutan was asked to prepare the sandwich. Or at least cut it in half. Instead of a tall proud round roll heaped with juicy roast beef I got a sad, squished thing that could have been a panini for all it's height. Yes, whoever cut it squashed it totally flat in the cutting. The meat was grey and overcooked and dry, with no gravy to be seen and even heaps of horseradish could not save it. Decent fries, despite the paltry amount. I will never be going back.

I wish I read the reviews before going here. I didn't think the food looked too bad but was very sick that night. If I hadn't been sick, I would still give them a low rating based on the prices and the fact they over charged me for my meal. It was only 50 cents but I only noticed that because it was my meal. Perhaps everything was charged wrong. For the price I paid we could have gone to a really nice restaurant. I do not recommend this place!

Walked in and even though there was almost no one in the dinning area, we waited to be seated. Once seated the hostess argued with us on how long we waited. Waited even longer for our drink order. Ordered a simple sandwich which was over cooked and horrible. Please has really gone downhill over the years. Don't waste your money, you're better off heating up leftovers.

This is the worst restaurant ever. We walked in its a dark dingy place. W e sat down and then ordered or meal. I got the Bacon Burger, my friend got the popular dish on the menu (it was marked because it was popular) it was a french dip sandwich. The waitress then said" Sorry we don't sell that" my question is whys it marked most popular if you don't sell it? So he got the roast beef sandwich. We Then waited 2 hours for our food I it came a second later we would have left. My burger was disgustimg, the bacon wasn't even cooked it had been micro waved for 10 seconds it was raw the quality of the meat was bad. My friend got a sandwich that he didn't even order it was just deed from a can on a plate. We were starving, I didn't touch mine my friend got food poisening. The riddle is why is this place still in running.

My husband and I bought tickets to a movie at the Granite Run AMC, and initially planned to just go to Ruby Tuesdays. A few hundred feet from Ruby Tuesdays, we made a game-day decision to try the Riddle Ale House in the hopes of supporting a local restaurant. What a horrible mistake! We were seated at the outside patio, which was an improvement over Ruby Tuesdays. Our choice of view was either Riddle Memorial Hospital or the mall parking lot. Not too nice, but hey, we were dining al fresco. The menu could be described as having standard to upscale pub fare, with gourmet burgers and fancy salads. What was glaringly lacking was a beer menu. I guess the "Riddle" is "Why is this an 'Ale House'?" We waited several minutes for our server to arrive. She seemed to be the only person serving the 10-ish tables out on the patio, and was about 70 years old. I'm not being ageist here, it's just a lot of work for one person, let alone someone her age. Our server approached us and said, "I have to get someone else's drink order so I might as well get yours." Charming! My husband asked what beers they had on tap. If I recall correctly, they were Bud, Miller Light, Coors Light, Sam Summer, Blue Moon, and Dogfishhead. Very unimpressive. He ordered a Blue Moon; I should have followed suit. I ordered one of the specialty mixed drinks called a Peach Iced Tea. It was billed as freshly brewed iced tea with peach flavored rum. Couldn't be so bad, right? WRONG! What came from the bar tasted like Snapple Peach Iced Tea mixed with Robitussin. AWFUL! After delivering our drinks, our server didn't show up again for another 15 minutes. I settled on the cranberry, walnut, and feta salad with an order of 3 mini crab cakes. The server came back to take our orders. My husband asked her opinion on the ribs. She said, "I think they're fine." Uh, yeah. He ordered them anyway. Fast forward 15-20 minutes. At this point, we were committed to eating there. If we went anywhere else, we'd be late for the movie. Our elderly server came out to the patio balancing our 3 plates individually. She teetered her way over to our table. She tossed the plates onto the table with a grunt, but missed with the ribs. Instead, they toppled off of the plate and onto my bare arm! Scalding hot barbeque sauce made of lava was all over my right arm! I just shouted, "Hot! Hot!" and our server did the same! She picked the ribs off of my arm and put them back on the plate. She told me she was going to get a wet towel for me to clean up with, and told my husband that she was going to bring the ribs back to the kitchen to heat them up. In theory, my husband has no problem eating food that once touched my arm, but that's just gross to hear out loud. I imagine it's also a violation of health codes. She came back with a wet towel for me, but it was used. Before I could protest the idea of wiping my body off with a food encrusted dirty rag, she was gone. So my choice was to let the barbecue sauce cool into a crust on my forearm or wipe off with this rag. I chose the latter. Luckily, my brilliant husband reminded me that his meal came with wet naps, so I could do a final rinse with something clean. I took a bite out of my salad. As I was chewing, I noticed there were about 4 cranberries, 3 feta crumbles, and 5 walnuts added to the bag of field greens. The greens themselves were drowning in a vat of sticky dressing. How disappointing! But at least I had my crab cakes. I cut into a cake, and put it in my mouth. What followed can only be described as Elmer's Glue Paste formed into a patty that was rubbed onto day-old cod that was sitting in the mall parking lot. After of few minutes of me not touching a thing on my side of the table, the busboy asked if I was done. I motioned to him to take away the dishes and a split second later, our awful server popped up. Where was she that whole time? She asked (pointing to the crab cakes), "You're going to take those home, right?" I replied, "Actually, no, they were fishy and tasted bad." She rolled her eyes at me and said, "I'll see what I can do!" In the corner of the patio, and in my line of sight, was a large bin in which the busboy scraped table scraps. I saw him scrape the remnants of my husband's dinner into it, and my mound of salad, but before he could discard the crabcakes, our nasty server was by his side, PICKING THE CRABCAKES OFF OF THE PLATE AND PUTTING THEM ON ANOTHER! SHE WALKED BACK INTO THE RESTAURANT WITH THE CRABCAKES ARRANGED ON ANOTHER PLATTER! When she returned with the check, she told me (here's the icing on the cake) "I'm not sure if the crab cakes were old or not. They aren't supposed to be." Needless to say, I will never, EVER return to this restaurant. My only explanation for their poor service and terrible food is that they get kick-backs from the emergency room across the street for every patron they send in.

I know everybody has one of THOSE places. Places that are in your hometown, that you have seen your whole life but have never been in. I have many of them but Riddle Ale House is one of the big ones. The problem is, its usually better to leave them as a mysterious yet familliar building, because going in breaks the spell. Such is the case with Riddle. RAH is located in front of the Granite Run Mall, so parking is Ample. Apparently, they have done rennovations so the place looks good inside and out. There is a nice outdoor deck area, but the view is either the mall, or the hospital across the street. I came to meet some friends for Quizzo. Sadly ( for Riddle) it wasnt too packed in there, the crowd was sparse. I liked the popcorn on the tables. There was a popcorn machine in the room where you could get more too, im a sucker for popcorn. The server was an adorable woman who had to be at least 70. She was sweet and entertaining and pretended to dance to the loud music. The charm kind of wore off though after waiting awhile for drinks and food. To be honest , at almost 40 , I still bartend and serve to make some extra cash, and looking at her scares me. If im still doing that at 70 , someone needs to shoot me. Maybe im accustomed to a better quality of Quizzo. These guys were nice but they were sloppy and often confused. Their questions were either too easy ( where would you find a periscope?) or too hard. Their rounds took waaaaaaay too long some lasting over an hour. The reason for this was that they didnt take control. Noone should ever say.." once again, last call for papers." Last call means last call, if someone doesnt give their paper in within 5 min of the questions ending, they either dont care or are cheating. They do Quizzo on weeknights to bring people in on off nights, but most people need to be at work the next day so get it done at a reasonable time and make it entertaining. I went twice now and the second time their draft beer wasnt working , so points off for that too. Their Roast Beef was bangin' but the fries tasted like seafood was fried in the same oil. Not a fan of that. Overall, I would probably go back, at the very least cause its close and their Beef was very good. I wouldnt suggest it for a nice night out but just to meet up for a few drinks its fine. I liked it better though before I went in and "broke the seal".

It takes forever for the food to come out. And they brought out the appetizers 4 mins before the entrees. Burgers were small. A bit over priced. Not a place I will visit often!

This is the go to place for the best roast beef sandwiches in the area. No kidding, really good, hand carved. Sharp provolone, horseradish...ah now that's a sandwich. But after that there is standard fare with average accomplishments: it fills your stomach and leaves you a bit parched. When they renovated it was a great improvement. It looks fantastic compared to the old space. In fact, it looks good compared to lots of places. And it was a blessing that the "old restaurant smell" had gone out with the old carpeting. Unfortunately, it came back. Could be the busy bar spilling its smells into the entire place...beer, smoke, stale sauces...but the Hawaiian Punch smelling cleaner that acts like a potpourri is enough to stop your appetite in its tracks. At the front door. Thank goodness for their seasonal outside dining. Because really, their beef sandwiches are the best. Sam says, "It's the only sandwich worth eating on a kaiser roll."

The salads here are pretty good. They are sizeable, and the ingredients seem fresh. They're not especially creative, but they do the trick. I appreciate that the list of salad options is greatly extended for the summer season. That's all the good I can say, and why a second star is even awarded. Any other food I've had has not been good. On my most recent visit, I ordered salmon with mixed vegetables. It took nearly half an hour to come out. The salmon, which should be served medium unless otherwise specified, was well done - overcooked. The salmon was also mushy and the texture was off, indicating to me that it was frozen. It was really gross. When I selected mixed vegetables as my side, I assumed the standard restaurant fair of broccoli/cauliflower/carrots or some similar fresh steamed combination of veggies. Instead, I got a small bowl of soup vegetables (you know, the corn/carrot/greenbean mix you get in the freezer section). Now, I understand that the Riddle Ale House in the middle of a mall parking lot is not a high-end shishi restaurant......but FROZEN FOOD!? Come on. If you can't provide chef's entrees, don't offer frozen dinners disguised as chef's entrees. Service isn't great either, whether in the dining room or at the bar. One final note... They have GOT to do something about the lame karaoke on Friday nights. Karaoke nights can be lots of fun. However, I walked out of this one after only two drinks. The same couple of people singing over and over, screaming at the top of their lungs or otherwise acting goofy. I couldn't get out of there fast enough...and I was planning to spend several hours. Get rid of this.
